About the Magellan Wireless Back-up Camera

Dominic DeVito
If you've got a Magellan RoadMate 9055, 9055-LM, or Pro 9165T portable navigator, you already know that it gives you reliable guidance and enhances your journeys. But did you know it can also double as a monitor for a rear-view camera? The Magellan Wireless Back-up Camera kit contains a camera, a transmitter, and a receiver. The 2.4GHz transmitter and receiver combo sends the images from the camera mounted on your rear license plate to your Magellan navigator. You'll see hazards, blind spots, and other dangers behind your vehicle, so you can keep yourself and your loved ones safe.

The durable waterproof and dust-resistant camera comes mounted on a bar that fits easily on your rear license plate. You can adjust the angle of the camera up to 45 degrees for optimum viewing. The weatherproof transmitter connects to the camera and taps into your car's back-up lights. When you shift into reverse, the camera automatically transmits to the receiver, which is connected to your Magellan navigator in its mount — no need to route wires throughout the length of your vehicle. You'll love the wide-angle full-color view for backing up or parking.

The transmitter's 45-foot range ensures you can use this kit with just about any vehicle, including trailers and RVs. Magellan recommends that you check their website to ensure your GPS navigator has the required software updates needed for camera functionality.

Features

Wireless Back-Up Camera System: The Magellan Wireless Back-up Camera System transforms your Magellan Safety Series GPS into a rearview monitor. While your Magellan GPS navigator guides you when driving, this wireless back-up camera system provides a measure of safety as you begin and end your trip. The Magellan Wireless Back-up Camera System includes a rear-view camera with integrated license plate mount, a wireless transmitter, wireless receiver, and 12-volt power adapter.

Note: The wireless back-up camera has a range of approximately 45'. Great for most cars, vans, trucks, and small trailers.

Compatibility: The Magellan Wireless Back-up Camera System is compatible with the following Magellan Safety Series GPS devices (as of 5/20/2013).

  • RoadMate 1700
  • RoadMate 1700-MU
  • RoadMate 1700-LM
  • RoadMate 9055
  • RoadMate 9055-LM
  • RoadMate Pro 9165T
  • RoadMate 5255T-LM
  • RoadMate 5265T-LMB
  • RoadMate 9250T-LMB
  • RoadMate RV9145
  • RoadMate RV9145-LM
  • RoadMate RV9165T-LM

Note: Your compatible Magellan RoadMate GPS navigator requires the latest software for back-up camera functionality. Check the Magellan Support Site for latest software updates pertaining to the 1700 series and 9055 series.

Rear View Camera: The rear-view camera provides a mirror output, so whatever the driver sees on the right side is what is on the right side of the vehicle. The back-up camera employs a CMOS imaging sensor with a resolution of 640 x 480. It provides a wide angle view of 120° horizontal x 100° vertical, so you can see people and objects coming into view behind your vehicle. The rear-view camera mounts to your vehicle's license plate and connects to the included wireless transmitter.

Wireless Transmitter: The back-up camera mounts on your vehicle's license plate with the 2.4GHz wireless transmitter located in the truck or other protected area of your vehicle. The wireless transmitter is weather proof and water resistant (IPX4 rating). The back-up camera attaches to the transmitter via a DC cord and composite video cable. The transmitter also requires a power/ground connection to your vehicle's reverse light circuit. The wireless transmitter will wirelessly transmit the back-up camera's video signal to the system's wireless receiver.

Wireless Receiver: The 2.4GHz wireless receiver mounts at the front of your vehicle, next to your compatible Magellan RoadMate GPS navigator. The wireless receiver connects to your Magellan RoadMate GPS navigator via a 3.5mm A/V connector. The wireless receiver then receives the back-up camera's video signal wirelessly via the connected wireless transmitter and displays the signal on your connected Magellan RoadMate GPS navigator's screen.

12-Volt Power Adapter: The Magellan Wireless Back-up Camera System includes an 12-Volt/cigarette lighter power adapter to power the wireless receiver and your Magellan RoadMate GPS navigator. The 12-volte power adapter features two mini-USB (type-B) connectors.

License Plate Mount: The Magellan Wireless Back-up Camera includes an integrated license plate mount that easily attaches to your vehicle's license plate. The back-up camera features a dustproof and waterproof housing (IP67 rating) to protect it against wet & dusty conditions. The camera can be adjusted downward to 45° for truck and SUV mounting.

Note: The license plate mount has two mounting holes spaced between 6.75" to 7.375" apart.

Auto Rear-View Mode: When you put your vehicle in reverse, your Magellan GPS navigator will switch from navigation mode to rear view mode, allowing you to see what is behind you; including children, pets, and toys. In order for this feature to work, the wireless transmitter's power and ground wires must be connected to your vehicle's reverse light circuit.

3.5mm A/V Output: Because the Magellan Wireless Back-up Camera system is fitted with a male 3.5mm A/V output connector, it is also compatible with other video systems that have a 3.5mm A/V input.

I'm sorry but I haven't installed the camera yet. I haven't even read the paperwork I got with it. If I get it installed or read anything I will let you know. Marian

The camera could be mounted on a front license plate bracket and it turns on as soon as there is 12 volt power supplied to it. A switch could be installed near the drivers seat to turn it on and off as desired. Make sure the GPS you use has a video input for a camera - most will display the camera video anytime the camera is active. If you don't want to try the installation yourself, try the install team at a big box store - they will install 3rd party items for a labour charge - probably about $75.00. Good luck. Pat

You can do that, however the camera need to get power from somewhere, in the reverse situation the camera getting the power from the break light but the way you want to connect it you should choose where to connect the power or just add another wires direct from the battery with a switch to the camera

All you need to do is mount it up front and put either a ground or 12 volts on the control line (I forget) For the backup, you tie the control line to the backup light *I think this goes to ground when in reverse to enable the camera. You would need an additional monitor to see the one up front or put a switch on the input of one to see the second camera. It is not rocket science.

Install a switch to 12V or tie into the parking lamp circuit. Do not attempt this on your own but utilize a qualified mechanic.
