Convenience and capability

If you've spent time shopping for lenses in the past, you know you are often forced to make a difficult choice. Do you get the go-anywhere composition convenience of a zoom lens, and trade off light sensitivity and the gorgeous out-of-focus backgrounds that large apertures can generate? Or do you go with a large-aperture fixed focal-length "prime" lens, and take its superior overall image quality in exchange for having to walk to the point where your framing seems right?

Now Sigma has created a lens for your APS-C sensor camera that gives you the best of both worlds. Its generous f/1.8 aperture throughout the entire zoom range means you'll have the light-gathering power to make quick work of a challenging lighting situation — and the shallow depth-of-field that leads to striking isolation of your subject in space. Plus, you'll have a variable zoom focal length that takes you from landscapes and group shots to a human-eye perspective on the world, perfect for everyday snapshots and candid portraits. The expert build quality of this lens means that you'll get the sharpness, clarity, and performance of a prime lens, while enjoying the creative flexibility of a zoom.

Fantastic Lens

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

A fantastic lens, exceptionally sharp throughout the focal range. Focuses fairly close for a non macro lens. Good low light use with great bokeh at the low f stops.

Pros: Small focal plane, bokeh, sharpness

Cons: Has a little trouble focusing with strong backlight. (Using nikon D5300)

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The lens is almost perfect except it does miss auto-focus from time to time, in particular in cases such as when the object is back-lighted, or contrast is low. For over 200 photos I took so far, more than a dozen such cases.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

My copy had serious focusing issues. Used it on my 7d. Even in bright daylight, the lens hunted and ultimately couldn't focus properly where the my 18-135 stm lens had no problem

Well done Sigma.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This lens is a tank, solidly built, ...unlike the latest crops of Canon L lenses. This lens is super sharp, taking details of individual facial pores of my subjects 10-15 feet away. I love the smoothness in the zoom and focusing, buttered metal. I first used this for a wedding in an extremely dimly lit church and what a great tool as my kit STM lens was practically useless. Btw, mahalo Crutchfield for sending this for free all the way to Hawaii in 2 days! More than perfect timing giving me a day to quickly go over the lens before the wedding. Now if only this lens could reach to at least 50-55mm and have image stabilization all while keeping the f1.8, we'd have the World's most perfect lens. I'd pay a little more premium if that was engineeringly possible. Although even so, this lens now primarily sits mounted to my Canon 70D rather than my 18-135mm STM. What an excellent quality lens from Sigma's new Art Series of lenses. I'm confident the rest of the series must be top notch as well. Sigma/Crutchfield, take my money!!!

Pros: Built better than many Canon L lenses. Sharp, sharp, sharp! Fast lens covering 2-3 primes.

Cons: No image stabilization (although it may not be needed since it's so fast). Limited reach, ...but in many cases, your legs can cover this issue.

Sigma 18-35 f1.8 Nikon Mount

Written by: Ger from Guam on November 24, 2013

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This is a very sharp lens from 18-35 focal length wide open. Sharpness is comparable or better than fixed lenses I own (35mm f1.8G and 50mm f1.8D) Focusing is precise and there is no need to use the micro focus adjustment on my Nikon D7000. Build quality is outstanding. Comes with a free hood too.

Pros: Very sharp and precise focus.

Cons: I wish they added vibration reduction. Using it without a tripod indoors without flash would soften the image when you pixel peep in the monitor. Totally acceptable in prints 5x7 and below. Also, can only be used is APS-C sensor cameras.

Overview: The Sigma 18-35mm F1.8 DC HSM (Model #210) is a high quality standard zoom lens. Typical uses include travel, weddings, events, portraits, and family photography. The lens has the Canon EF mount, and comes with a lens hood, and front and rear caps.

Optics: The lens features a wide glass molded aspherical lens with Special Low Dispersion (SLD) glass to compensate for aberrations and curvature at the widest angle.

Lens Hood: The lens includes a bayonet-type detachable lens hood to help prevent stray light from entering the lens, causing flare, and to protect the lens from rain, snow, and dust. When not in use, the lens hood can be inverted and mounted onto the lens backwards for storage. The lens hood adds approximately 1-7/8" to the overall length when mounted.

Focus Mode Switch: The lens features a two-way switch for setting the focus mode: AF (auto focus) or M (manual focus).

Sigma DC Lenses: This Sigma DC lens is designed for use with digital SLRs with APS-C-sized image sensors. The image circle matches the smaller size of the image sensor of most digital cameras.

HSM: The lens has a hyper-sonic motor (HSM) that provides a quiet, high-speed auto focusing mechanism.
