Our take on the Sigma Photo 85mm f/1.4 Lens

by Woody Sherman
Sigma Photo

Nothing matches the presence and clarity of a wide-aperture lens that's designed for a single focal length. Lenses that meet this description are called "fast primes," because they gather lots of light and they aren't zoom lenses. The optical pathway is less complex than on a zoom lens, and so the images are often breathtakingly sharp. This lens is ideal for isolating your subject in space while blending the foreground and background into a pleasing, soft blur. Wedding photographers will find this Sigma 85mm f/1.4 a "go-to" lens, because of its ability to capture images with emotional resonance in less than ideal lighting. The large maximum f/1.4 aperture lets in plenty of light, allowing faster shutter speeds to "freeze" moving subjects. It also makes it perfect for shooting indoors when the lights are low.

Highlights:

  • Canon EF-mount
  • 85mm f/1.4 EX DG HSM normal lens with 35mm equivalent of 136mm on Canon cameras with APS-C sensors
  • HSM (Hyper-Sonic Motor) for fast, silent focusing
  • Super Multi-Layer Coating minimizes reflections and flare
  • ideal for portraits and general event photography
  • minimum focusing distance: 33.5"
  • constructed of 11 elements in 8 groups
  • filter size: 77mm
  • lens is 3-7/16" in diameter, 3-7/16" long
  • weight: 25.6 oz.
  • carrying case, lens hood, front and rear lens caps supplied
  • warranty: 4 years
  • Our 60-day money-back guarantee

A great lens for the price

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The lens works great with my 5dMK3. Huge but not too heavy. Images seem just a bit flat, but easily fixed in post. I do find some chromatic problems, but those too are easily fixed in post. This lens finds the light for you. Even with a filter I was able to shoot deep into a dark shed and get a well exposed shot at 100 ISO. Very sharp at all stops.
Pros:
Cheap when compared to Canon "L" lens. Auto focus is fast. Shoots in super low light!
Cons:
Some Chromatic issues

Great lens!

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Good portrait lens. Sharp wide open, stopped down to f4, it is sharper than my 24-105L, which is a very good lens.
Pros:
Image quality. Expensive, but a steal compared to Canon 85 f1.2L
Cons:
A bit heavy, but not that big of an issue.
