About the Sigma Photo 17-50mm f/2.8 EX DC OS HSM

Your favorite "kit zoom," only better

Your DSLR might have come with a short-range zoom lens. In a great many cases, this is what we call a "kit zoom" lens, and it does a great job of delivering a lot of versatility while not adding a lot of overall cost to your camera purchase.

Your favorite "kit zoom," only better

Your DSLR might have come with a short-range zoom lens. In a great many cases, this is what we call a "kit zoom" lens, and it does a great job of delivering a lot of versatility while not adding a lot of overall cost to your camera purchase.

The thing that might not be immediately obvious is that they often trade light sensitivity, particularly as they're zoomed in, for those cost savings. So what if you had the great versatility of a kit zoom's focal length, matched with a light-gathering wide aperture that stays constant through the zoom range?  You'd have this in-demand camera-bag staple, the Sigma Photo 17-50mm f/2.8 zoom lens.

Designed to give you everything from a panorama of a sun-dappled river winding through Big Sky country, to an intimate portrait of your spouse squinting as he surveys that landscape's majesty, this lens is ready for most day-to-day opportunities, whether they're in daylight or low light.

Features

Overview: The Sigma 17-50mm F2.8 DC OS HSM (Model #583) is a high quality, large aperture standard zoom lens. Typical uses include travel, landscape, wedding, events, portrait, and family photography. The lens has the Canon EF-Mount, and comes with a lens hood, front and rear caps, and a zippered storage case.

Lens Hood: The 17-50mm lens includes a bayonet-type detachable lens hood to help prevent stray light from entering the lens, causing flare, and to protect the lens from rain, snow, and dust. When not in use, the lens hood can be inverted and mounted onto the lens backwards for storage.

Focus Mode Switch: The lens features a two-way switch for setting the focus mode: AF (auto focus) or M (manual focus).

Optical Stabilization (OS): The lens also has a two-way switch to activate (or turn off) the built-in optical stabilization. When switched to the On position, the optical stabilization compensates for camera shake, especially in low-light or long zoom situations when the camera is hand-held. Using the OS feature, it is possible to get sharp results at shutter speeds approximately 4 stops slower than you could without it.

Sigma DC Lenses: This Sigma DC lens is designed for use with digital SLRs with APS-C-sized image sensors. The image circle matches the smaller size of the image sensor of most digital cameras.

HSM: The lens has a hyper-sonic motor (HSM) that provides a quiet, high-speed auto focusing mechanism.
