Sigma Photo 17-50mm f/2.8 EX DC OS HSM

Overview

Our take on the Sigma Photo 17-50mm f/2.8 EX DC OS HSM

Your DSLR might have come with a short-range zoom lens. In a great many cases, this is what we call a "kit zoom" lens, and it does a great job of delivering a lot of versatility while not adding a lot of overall cost to your camera purchase.

Your favorite "kit zoom," only better

Your DSLR might have come with a short-range zoom lens. In a great many cases, this is what we call a "kit zoom" lens, and it does a great job of delivering a lot of versatility while not adding a lot of overall cost to your camera purchase.

The thing that might not be immediately obvious is that they often trade light sensitivity, particularly as they're zoomed in, for those cost savings. So what if you had the great versatility of a kit zoom's focal length, matched with a light-gathering wide aperture that stays constant through the zoom range?  You'd have this in-demand camera-bag staple, the Sigma Photo 17-50mm f/2.8 zoom lens.

Designed to give you everything from a panorama of a sun-dappled river winding through Big Sky country, to an intimate portrait of your spouse squinting as he surveys that landscape's majesty, this lens is ready for most day-to-day opportunities, whether they're in daylight or low light.

It is extremely sharp and functions very well for me on my Nikon D5100. It's a great value for the money as compared to the Nikkor 17-55mm .This lens is wonderful as a general purpose/walk around lens. It's not too heavy. I am very happy with it .

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Really cool lens the Sigma 17-50mm f2.8 -- a super bargain of a price from Crutchfield. I like it a lot cause of it's constant aperture and the it's build quality. Sharpness is on the spot i've used it with a Nikon D7000. This is my first Sigma lens and i was a little skeptic but i did my research and the Sigmas are a top notch manufacturer of lenses. Thanks Crutchfield for the discount price, it was all worth it :)

Jury's still out

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The jury's still out on this lens for me. I've used it twice so far with mixed results. The bokeh is great at long focal lengths but it's not consistently sharp. At it's wides focal length it seems a little soft at f2.8. Maybe I just need to stop it down a little. I got good results at f3.2 and 35mm focal length. The build quality is okay but it's not excellent. I wish it was a little longer. Sometimes my fingers interfere with the focus ring because the lens is so compact. Although it does focus quickly. In short, if I can find this lens' sweet spot (if it has one) then I may end up loving it. If not, then it may go back to Crutchfield.

Pros: nice weight, nice bokeh, fast focus, lens hood included

Cons: wish it was a little longer and sturdier, not as sharp as I expected

Yes. It is a recommended lens for the D3300 and does support the Autofocus functions. I hope that helps! My Bio: http://www.crutchfield.com/Support/Bio.aspx?bio=5 [ Ryan  Mar 25, 2016 ]  Staff
