Your favorite "kit zoom," with more options

Your APS-C DSLR might have come with a short-range zoom lens. In a great many cases, this is what we call a "kit zoom" lens, and it does a great job of delivering a lot of versatility while not adding a lot of overall cost to your camera purchase.

The thing that might not be immediately obvious is that they often trade light sensitivity, particularly as they're zoomed in, for those cost savings. So what if you had the great versatility of a kit zoom's focal length with a bit more reach, matched with a light-gathering f/2.8 aperture when zoomed out wide? Add in the ability to shoot small objects at very close distances and you'd have this pinnacle of versatility, the Sigma Photo Contemporary Series 17-70mm zoom lens. Optical stabilization and HSM autofocus technology ensure that more of your pictures will be crisp and clear, even if the shooting conditions are tricky.

Designed to give you everything from a panorama of a sun-dappled river winding through Big Sky country, to tight shot of a desert lizard sunning itself on a nearby rock, this lens is ready for most day-to-day opportunities, whether they're in daylight or low light.

Features

Overview: The Sigma 17-70mm F2.8-4 DC HSM Macro (Model #884) is a high quality wide angle zoom and macro lens. It is the first lens in the Contemporary line of Sigma's Global Vision. Typical uses include closeup photography, travel, weddings & events, and family photography. The lens has the Canon EF-mount, and comes with a lens hood, and front and rear caps.

Sigma DC Lenses: This Sigma DC lens is designed for use with digital SLRs with APS-C-sized image sensors. The image circle matches the smaller size of the image sensor of most digital cameras.

Construction: The lens is made of durable TSC (Thermally Stable Composite), which allows the lens size to be reduced by approximately 30%, compared to conventional models.

Optics: The lens features 16 elements in 14 groups, including two FLD glass elements, with performance equal to fluorite, and one SLD element to reduce color aberration and superb image quality.

Lens Hood: The lens includes a bayonet-type detachable lens hood to help prevent stray light from entering the lens, causing flare, and to protect the lens from rain, snow, and dust. When not in use, the lens hood can be inverted and mounted onto the lens backwards for storage. The lens hood adds approximately 1" to the overall length of the lens when mounted.

HSM: The lens has a hyper-sonic motor (HSM) that provides a quiet, high-speed auto focusing mechanism.

Optical Stabilizer (OS): The 17-70mm lens has an Optical Stabilizer, which compensates for camera shake when shooting handheld. The Optical Stabilizer can be turned on/off with a two-way switch on the lens barrel.

Focus Mode Switch: The lens features a two-way switch for setting the focus mode: AF (auto focus) or M (manual focus). Even in AF mode, you can focus manually by rotating the focus ring.

Firmware Updates: With the optional Sigma USB dock (sold separately by the manufacturer), you can update the lens firmware via USB. In addition, you can adjust the focus parameters with an online update.
