Our take on the Sigma Photo 17-70mm f/2.8-4.0 DC Macro OS HSM | C

Your APS-C DSLR might have come with a short-range zoom lens. In a great many cases, this is what we call a "kit zoom" lens, and it does a great job of delivering a lot of versatility while not adding a lot of overall cost to your camera purchase.

Your favorite "kit zoom," with more options

Your APS-C DSLR might have come with a short-range zoom lens. In a great many cases, this is what we call a "kit zoom" lens, and it does a great job of delivering a lot of versatility while not adding a lot of overall cost to your camera purchase.

The thing that might not be immediately obvious is that they often trade light sensitivity, particularly as they're zoomed in, for those cost savings. So what if you had the great versatility of a kit zoom's focal length with a bit more reach, matched with a light-gathering f/2.8 aperture when zoomed out wide? Add in the ability to shoot small objects at very close distances and you'd have this pinnacle of versatility, the Sigma Photo Contemporary Series 17-70mm zoom lens. Optical stabilization and HSM autofocus technology ensure that more of your pictures will be crisp and clear, even if the shooting conditions are tricky.

Designed to give you everything from a panorama of a sun-dappled river winding through Big Sky country, to tight shot of a desert lizard sunning itself on a nearby rock, this lens is ready for most day-to-day opportunities, whether they're in daylight or low light.

Excellent lens for a novice photographer like me. This zoom lens takes beautiful and sharp pictures and complements my longer zoom lens well. It's perfect for indoor shots with low lighting conditions.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I bought it for my travels where I need good everyday lens to shoot mostly landscapes and architecture. This lens satisfies my needs pretty well. It's fast, has fast and accurate AF, and produces excellent pictures. IS works fine allowing to shoot in lower light. It's also well made, zoom is smooth. And it's less expensive than comparable Nikon or Canon lenses, depending what camera you use it for.

Pros: Fast, sharp, fast and accurate AF, IS

Cons:

great alternative walk around lens

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Great alternative to the Nikon kit lenses. 1/2 stop faster, very sharp even wide open, extra few mm on both end, and vibration reduction, a clear winner. oh, and it is MUCH cheaper than equivalent Nikons. Sigma really stepped up the quality in their lenses lineup recently with their new Art and Contemporary lines. A good "scientific" review here:http://slrgear.com/reviews/showproduct.php/product/1560/cat/31

Pros: Light, sharp, good range, 1/2 step faster, cheap... what more do you need?

Cons: weather sealing? for that price you can't ask too much. We'll see how well it last with time. Also specific known bug with the D7100 on the picture review: you can't scroll through the pic at 100% easily. Not a big deal to me.

Features

Overview: The Sigma 17-70mm F2.8-4 DC HSM Macro (Model #884) is a high quality wide angle zoom and macro lens. It is the first lens in the Contemporary line of Sigma's Global Vision. Typical uses include closeup photography, travel, weddings & events, and family photography. The lens has the Canon EF-mount, and comes with a lens hood, and front and rear caps.

Sigma DC Lenses: This Sigma DC lens is designed for use with digital SLRs with APS-C-sized image sensors. The image circle matches the smaller size of the image sensor of most digital cameras.

Construction: The lens is made of durable TSC (Thermally Stable Composite), which allows the lens size to be reduced by approximately 30%, compared to conventional models.

Optics: The lens features 16 elements in 14 groups, including two FLD glass elements, with performance equal to fluorite, and one SLD element to reduce color aberration and superb image quality.

Lens Hood: The lens includes a bayonet-type detachable lens hood to help prevent stray light from entering the lens, causing flare, and to protect the lens from rain, snow, and dust. When not in use, the lens hood can be inverted and mounted onto the lens backwards for storage. The lens hood adds approximately 1" to the overall length of the lens when mounted.

HSM: The lens has a hyper-sonic motor (HSM) that provides a quiet, high-speed auto focusing mechanism.

Optical Stabilizer (OS): The 17-70mm lens has an Optical Stabilizer, which compensates for camera shake when shooting handheld. The Optical Stabilizer can be turned on/off with a two-way switch on the lens barrel.

Focus Mode Switch: The lens features a two-way switch for setting the focus mode: AF (auto focus) or M (manual focus). Even in AF mode, you can focus manually by rotating the focus ring.

Firmware Updates: With the optional Sigma USB dock (sold separately by the manufacturer), you can update the lens firmware via USB. In addition, you can adjust the focus parameters with an online update.
