Our take on the Apple iPod nano 4GB

With Apple's new 4GB iPod nano, you can carry up to 66 hours of near-CD-quality music or a combination of your favorite songs and photos in a sleek, brushed aluminum package. Smaller than a credit card and thin as a matchbook, this super-compact player displays your photos and album cover art in bright, vivid colors on its LCD screen. Apple's elegantly simple Click Wheel lets you zoom through menus quickly to find the song or picture you're looking for.

The iPod nano comes with some cool extras. Its clock has a sleep timer and alarm function, plus a multiple time zone display. You can even use it as a stopwatch. Transfer your calendar and personal contacts from your PC to the iPod nano to create a portable appointment book and phone list. The player's screen lock keeps your information safe — and if you forget the pass code, just sync the iPod nano with your computer to reset it.

The player comes with a standard iPod dock connection, so it works with accessories that have a docking cable. An included adapter lets you fit the nano into a variety of powered speaker systems that have built-in docks. The rechargeable battery lasts up to 14 hours, so you're sure to have entertainment at your fingertips. And thanks to its embedded flash memory, the iPod nano never skips — no matter how active you are.

System Requirements

Features

Compatibility: The Apple iPod nano is compatible with both Macintosh and Windows operating systems. See System Requirements section below for minimum requirements.

Storage Capacity: This iPod nano has a built-in 4GB flash drive, capable of storing 1000 songs (4-minute song average--recorded in AAC format at 128 kbps) or 25,000 pictures (iPod nano-viewable photos transferred from iTunes). In addition to storing audio, you can use the hard drive to store data files as well.

Audio Formats: The iPod nano supports the following audio formats: AAC (16 to 320 Kbps), Protected AAC (from iTunes Music Store), MP3 (32 to 320 Kbps), MP3 VBR, Audible (formats 2, 3, and 4), Apple Lossless, WAV, and AIFF. When you import music from a CD using iTunes, it is converted to AAC format by default.

Note: If you are using iTunes for Windows, you can convert non-protected WMA files to AAC or MP3 format.

Display: The 1.5" color liquid crystal display has 176 x 132 pixel resolution and 0.168mm dot pitch.

Backlighting: The display's blue-white LED backlight illuminates the LCD screen for a selectable amount of time each time a button is pressed. The backlight timer can be set for 2, 5, 10, 15 or 20 seconds, always on, or off.

Skip Protection: The iPod nano uses a 4GB flash memory so it will not skip, regardless of activity level.

Controls: The iPod nano's touch-sensitive controls are located on the front of the unit. There is a Click Wheel, which gives you the enhanced durability and sensitivity of the iPod Touch Wheel, with buttons underneath. There are 3 Playback Mode buttons (Play/Pause, Previous/Rewind, Next/Fast-forward) and a Menu button located under the Click Wheel. The Select button is located in the center of the Click Wheel. The Click Wheel and Select button allow you to navigate through menus and song lists, highlight the desired selection, and select the item. To avoid unwanted actions due to accidental button pressing, you can disable the iPod nano's buttons with the top-mounted hold button.

Playback Functions: You can set the iPod nano to repeat one song over and over, or repeat all songs in the list (album or playlist) from which the song was selected. You can also have the iPod nano shuffle all songs on the flash drive, shuffle all songs on the playlist, or shuffle albums (when set to shuffle albums, it plays all the songs on an album in order, then randomly selects another album and plays it through in order). During Shuffle play, the songs do not repeat until all songs have been played.

On-The-Go Playlists: You can program the iPod nano to play the songs you want in the order you want. The songs are queued in the On-The-Go playlist. In addition to individual songs, you can queue entire lists of songs (albums) in the On-The-Go playlist. There is no limit to the number of selections you can put in the On-The-Go playlist.

Equalizer: The iPod nano's built-in equalizer has 22 EQ presets to change the sound to suit a particular music genre or style. The presets include: Acoustic, Bass Booster, Bass Reducer, Classical, Dance, Deep, Electronic, Flat, Hip Hop, Jazz, Latin, Loudness, Lounge, Piano, Pop, R&B, Rock, Small Speakers, Spoken Word, Treble Booster, Treble Reducer, Vocal Booster, and Off.

Headphones: The iPod nano comes with earbud-style headphones with 18mm drivers using Neodymium magnets. If desired, you can use any headphones with a 3.5mm mini-plug.

Clock Functions: The iPod nano has an internal clock with time/date settings, a calendar, an alarm clock and sleep timer. The calendar can be advanced a day at a time or a month at a time. The alarm clock can be set to any minute up to 24 hours in advance. The sleep timer can be set to automatically turn off the unit in 15, 30, 60, 90, or 120 minutes.

Contacts/Calendar Events: If you are using Mac OS X v10.4 or later, you can use iTunes to synchronize your Address Book contacts and iCal calendar information. If you are running any version of Mac OS X earlier than 10.4, you use a Mac and iSync to update your information. Synchronizing information using iSync requires iSync 1.1 or later, and iCal 1.0.1 or later.

Note Reader: The iPod nano has a built-in note reader that lets you download text-based information and read it on the screen.

Games: In addition to enjoying music, pictures, and books, you can play one of four pre-loaded games on your iPod nano. The games that are available include Brick, Music Quiz, Parachute, and Solitaire.

Computer Interfaces: The iPod nano connects to your computer's high-power USB 2.0 port for downloading and charging the battery. You can also charge the battery by FireWire (also called IEEE 1394 or i.LINK), but downloading is done only by USB.

Power Requirements: The iPod nano has a built-in rechargeable, non-removable, lithium ion battery. When the iPod nano is connected to your computer, the battery charges. When fully charged, the battery provides approximately 14 hours of music playback time, or 4 hours playback of slide show with music. The battery charges up to 80% of capacity in 1.5 hours and fully charges in 3 hours. A battery life indicator appears at the top of the display.

Optional iPod nano Dock: The optional iPod nano Dock holds the unit upright as it charges or transfers music. The iPod cable attaches the dock to your computer. In addition, the iPod nano Dock has a 3.5mm mini-jack stereo line output for connecting the iPod nano to a home stereo or external powered speakers.

Music Management Software

iTunes: The supplied CD-ROM software provides iTunes music management software for Mac and Windows users. This software allows you to organize and manage your music and audio downloads. With the software, you can buy music and audio books from the iTunes Music Store, create your own custom audio or data CDs, import tracks in AAC, rate tracks and sort your library based on ratings, create mixes automatically with Smart Playlists, share playlists with other users, play audio books, or learn a foreign language. With iTunes and an AirPort Express Base Station, you can stream music wirelessly from your Mac or PC to your home stereo or powered speakers.

Volume Levels: iTunes can adjust the volume of songs automatically, so they play at the same relative volume levels.

Audio Books: In addition to music, you can download audio books from the iTunes Music Store (approximately 5,000 titles), or from Audible.com, an independent website with over 18,000 titles.

High-Speed Transfers: Transfer time varies depending upon how much music you want to transfer from your computer to your iPod nano. You can connect the iPod nano using USB 2.0, which transfers data at up to 480 Mbps.

Auto-Synching: Each time you connect the iPod nano to your computer, the unit's Auto-Synch feature automatically updates it with any changes made to the iTunes program on your computer, including any new music purchased at the iTunes Music Store.

Song Ratings: You can assign a rating to a song from 1 to 5 stars to indicate how much you like it. Song ratings can be used to help you create playlists automatically in iTunes.

Smart Playlists: You can create customized Smart Playlists from the songs stored in your music library. Smart Playlists can include only certain genres of music, songs by certain artists, or songs that match particular criteria, such as songs rated 3 stars or higher or a playlist that's no more than 3 GB in size. After the Smart Playlist is created, any songs you import that meet the Smart Playlist criteria will be automatically added to the Smart Playlist.

System Requirements

Minimum Requirements for Macintosh: To use iPod nano with a Macintosh, you must have the following:

  • Macintosh with a built-in USB port
  • Mac OS X v10.3.4 or later
  • iSync 1.1 and iCal 1.0.1 or later (optional for synchronizing contact and calendar information with iPod nano)

Minimum Requirements for Windows: To use iPod nano with a Windows PC, you must have the following:

  • Built-in USB port
  • Windows 2000 with Service Pack 4 or later, or Windows XP Home or Professional with Service Pack 2 or later

Apple iPod nano 4GB

Well I have to say the Nano is awesome. It is very easy to use and the perfect size. I love it. I only wish it could store all my music. That is the hardest part about 4Gb - I used to have a 20 Gb iPod which fit my library perfectly, the 4Gb, is small, but it is efficient and simple, and great sound quality, better than the 20 Gb (3rd Gen).

The only thing I can see will be a problem is keeping the prints and scratches away. It looks great new... Just hope I can keep it that way.

Battery life - no where near 14 hours advertised, I'd say more like 8. But it is still the best MP3 player I've used.

Best MP3 player ever!!!

Written By jacob_z, Richmond, IN, USA on Saturday, January 14, 2006

I have had a difficult time with MP3 players, this being my 4th one in 2 years. My first was a Philips 128 MB that I received as a gift. I didn't keep that one very long because of the low capacity.

After that I got a Dell 15 GB, which was nice but had problems. The first one I got worked for a few months and then the hard drive crashed. Dell sent me a new one and the same thing happened a few months later. Dell sent me another new one, but that time I sold it on eBay.

Then I bought a Sony 20 GB Network Walkman, which was small and had great battery life, but the interface was awful. But I was determined to actually keep it, so I put up with it for over a year.

Now, I always liked iPods, but I was never really impressed until the Nano came out. I knew then that I had to have one, even if it was only 4 GB.

So I sold the Sony and got a black 4 GB Nano, and to say the least I was very impressed. The excellent interface impressed me just as much as the impossibly small size. Everything about it is just perfectly designed - Apple obviously has figured out everything after dominating the MP3 player market for so long.

Even if you have a high-capacity hard drive player, I would highly recommend the Nano. 4 GB is still a lot of music (I have about 1100 songs on mine). You will listen to music more often when you have something small enough to fit in your pocket.

The only negative thing I can think of is that it is so small, you can easily lose it or forget that it's in your pocket.

All in all, a great MP3 player. Buy one - you won't regret it.

Love my black 4giger

Written By Christopher, Norwood, MA on Wednesday, November 16, 2005

I never thought I'd be an iPod person but I got hooked when I received a Shuffle for my birthday. The Nano came out a couple of weeks later so I set my sights on the impossible to find black 4GB version. After lots of running around I got lucky. So far I've downloaded over 500 pictures, 700 songs and I imported my MS Outlook calendar onto it which sychronizes every time I recharge the battery. The good news: I still have almost 1.5 GB to spare. I HATE PDAs so even though I have tons of meetings I refused to buy one--The Nano solved my dilemma. You can also download MS Outlook's To-Do and Contacts features but that seems like a waste of valuable space. I heard about the scratching problem so I kept the protective cover on my Nano until I purchased the "Incase" leather holder with a belt-clip. It's small, convenient to use, and friendly to both genders. On a negative note, the headphones that come with iPods need to be improved. My Shuffle's lasted a month and the set that came with my Nano has average bass response. I bought a pair of Sony MDR-EX71s because they were inexpensive, have great bass response and come with sets of small, medium, & large in-ear earbuds so you can get the right fit. Those who settled for the 2GB white Nano... You should have waited! What a difference a little bit of patience and $50 makes!

I am probably one of the last to catch onto the iPod craze, but the Nano is just awesome. Compact, lightweight and just the right storage capacity. The only drawback I found is with iTunes being a bit fussy. Also, be sure to get a rugged case.
