Our take on the Apple AirPort Express

Now you can enjoy your iTunes® library anywhere — your den, your kitchen, even a friend's house — with no wires connecting your computer to your speakers. The AirPort Express is a portable, wireless base station equipped with AirTunes. This technology enables the iTunes software on your AirPort- or Wi-Fi®-equipped desktop or laptop computer to detect every AirPort Express in the house and send music to whichever room you choose, wirelessly. Just plug the extremely portable AirPort Express into a power outlet, and connect it to a stereo system or pair of powered speakers (cables are available separately).

Want to use a printer in another room? No problem — you get wireless printing when you connect the AirPort Express to your printer via USB. Or, connect the AirPort Express to a DSL modem, cable modem, or local network (via an Ethernet connection) to get wireless Internet access. (Since it's so compact and plugs right into an AC outlet, the AirPort Express is perfect for creating a wireless network in a hotel room, or any room with a compatible Internet connection.) You can even extend the range of your existing wireless network, if you already use an AirPort Extreme or AirPort Express as your main base station.

Features

Overview: The AirPort Express is a portable, wireless base station that can be used with any wireless-enabled computer that is compliant with the 802.11g or 802.11b standards. The AirPort Express can be used to work with your Internet connection, stereo, USB printer, or existing network.

Wireless Internet Access: You can connect the AirPort Express to a DSL modem, cable modem, or local network (via an Ethernet connection) to get wireless Internet access. When you are connected to a compatible modem or network, you can share your Internet connection with up to ten other computers at the same time.

AirTunes: If you are using AirPort Express, and you have connected it to your stereo or powered speakers, you can play iTunes music on the stereo using AirTunes. AirTunes is an encoding technology that allows for CD-quality transmission of iTunes music over the air. You can stream music from your iTunes library to AirPort Express wirelessly, and AirPort Express plays the music on your stereo through cables connected to the analog and optical digital audio stereo minijack. The music is buffered to ensure smooth playback without skips or jumps. Anything you play in iTunes you can play using AirTunes.

Note: To use AirTunes on a Mac, you need AirPort 4.0 or later and iTunes 4.6 or later. To use AirTunes on a Windows machine, you need iTunes 4.6 or later and a compatible Windows XP or 2000 wireless computer.

Printing on a USB-compatible Printer: If you have a USB printer connected to the AirPort Express, computers on the network can print to the printer.

Extending the Range of Your AirPort Network: You can extend the range of your existing AirPort Extreme or AirPort Express network by setting up wireless connections between multiple base stations in the network, known as a Wireless Distribution System (WDS), or connecting the base stations via Ethernet to create a roaming network.

Supplied Software

AirPort Express CD-ROM: The AirPort Express CD-ROM includes the following software:

  • AirPort Express Assistant: Use the AirPort Express Assistant to set up your AirPort Express to connect to the Internet, play iTunes music on your home stereo or powered speakers, and share a printer. You can also bridge your AirPort Express to your existing AirPort Extreme or AirPort Express wireless network to extend the range of your network (WDS).
  • AirPort Status Menu in the Menu Bar: Use the AirPort status menu to switch quickly between AirPort networks, monitor the signal quality of the current network, create a computer-to-computer network, and turn AirPort on and off. The status menu is available on computers using Mac OS X.
  • AirPort Admin Utility: AirPort Admin Utility is an advanced toll for setting up and managing AirPort Extreme and AirPort Express base stations. Use AirPort Admin Utility to adjust network, routing, and security settings and other advanced options.
  • iTunes: The CD-ROM provides iTunes 4.6 music management software for Mac and Windows users. This software allows you to organize and manage your music and audio downloads. With the software, you can buy music and audio books from the iTunes Music Store, create your own custom audio or data CDs, import tracks in AAC, rate tracks and sort your library based on ratings, create mixes automatically with Smart Playlists, share playlists with other users, play audio books, or learn a foreign language.

Full-Featured Wireless Router, Print Server, and Audio Gateway

Written By Nathan, Fresno, CA on Friday, August 12, 2005

I've had the AirPort Express for over a year. I've used both Macs and PCs connected to it wirelessly with no difficulties. My AirPort Express is set up as both a print server and "AirTunes" audio gateway so that both Macs and PCs on my home network can play through my home stereo system using iTunes. It performs both these functions flawlessly. I have an HP ink jet printer connected to it via USB and print to it from my PowerBook and from my Sony Vaio desktop PC.

Wireless range while in 802.11g only mode is sufficient to reach throughout the entire 2 bedroom apartment (1100 sq. ft). Range is average to above average for a 802.11g access point. The AirPort Express automatically picks the wireless channel with the least interference and seems to do this successfully. It supports (and I use) WPA2 128-bit encryption and has a number of configurable options both for wireless routing and for wired routing of computers connected to it's 1 Ethernet port. If you're wondering how the AirPort Express compares to the AirPort Extreme Base Station or a Linksys (or other) wireless router, it is full-featured and competitive.

Overall, I've been very happy with the AirPort Express. I'd recommend it to any Windows or Mac OS user.

AWESOME!

Written By Felipe, Tucson, AZ on Tuesday, September 13, 2005

This product works like all Apple products, it does what it's supposed to extremely well ,set up is a snap, and it is extremely simple to use. It's not as fancy as some of the others but then again, it doesnt have the price of the others. I love this little product, you can take it from room to room, just plug it in and go, and it lets you control the music and sound from any computer that has iTunes ( which I also think it's simpler to use than WMP ) be it a MAC or Windows computer, I happen to have both and it works perfectly in either one. Everytime we have parties we dont have to deal with cd's anymore, we just hook it up to our home stereo and control all of the music from our laptop. It ROCKS!
