Apple TV gives you a virtually unlimited selection of high-definition movies, TV shows, video, and photos to explore. This wireless digital media receiver can play music from your computer, show photos from your iPhone®, even access your media collection stored online in the iCloud.
The newest Apple TV can stream full 1080p high-definition video and audio. You'll enjoy your favorite TV shows, movies and even photo slideshows in breath-taking 1080p resolution. And with the ability to deliver Dolby® Digital 5.1 surround sound, your movies and shows will sound as good as they look.
Apple TV links to the iCloud, where you can store your music, photos, documents and more online. And the iCloud can be accessed by any Apple device — use Apple TV to display photos you took with your iPhone, on your HDTV's big beautiful screen. Or the music you bought through iTunes, or the home movies you edited on your iPad. If it's in your iCloud, it's available via your Apple TV. And you'll navigate through all of that entertainment via a crisp 1080p interface that's a pleasure to look at.
AirPlay wireless streaming makes it easy to tap into your iTunes library through Apple TV. Just open iTunes on your laptop or Apple portable device, and select Apple TV in the AirPlay menu. You can control the volume remotely, and even stream the music simultaneously to additional AirPlay-compatible components.
Download Apple's free Remote app to your iPhone, iPod touch®, or iPad®, and turn it into a powerful Wi-Fi® remote that'll control the music coming from your PC.
But your computer isn't the only compatible entertainment source. You can send music or video from your iPhone, iPod touch or iPad. Play games on your TV using your iPhone as the controller, hearing the soundtrack through your audio system.
Play Internet radio stations through iTunes, or sound from your iPhone or iPad apps — including music services such as Pandora® and Rhapsody. It's all possible with Apple TV.
But if you have an iPad, iPad 2, the new iPad or iPhone 4S, you're not just limited to audio. Your device also has AirPlay Mirroring functionality. That is, your iPad or iPhone 4S can wirelessly stream what's on its screen to your TV screen through the Apple TV. Show everyone what's on your device, even when you zoom in or change from portrait to landscape.
With an iTunes account, you can rent or download 1080p HD movies and TV shows. If you're a Netflix subscriber, you can stream your selections straight to your HDTV through Apple TV. And you'll enjoy the same simple, intuitive interface you get with iTunes, so browsing and selecting your programs will be a breeze.
You can even keep up to date with sports. MLB.TV, NBA and NHL.TV all offer subscriptions through Apple TV so you can watch your favorite teams — sometimes live. And with Apple TV you can rewind or fast forward through recorded games, or just pause the action if you need to.
There are a host of on-demand news programs available on a subscription basis, including some produced by the Wall Street Journal.
The Apple TV also serves up videos from YouTube®, Vimeo, Flickr, and other select sites. Still not enough? You can also enjoy your favorite audio or video podcasts. And with Home Share, you can access up to five different iTunes libraries within the same network. So if you've got photos on your iPhone you haven't put on your computer — no problem. You can search your libraries and find that photo, wherever you happened to store it.
If you're into gaming and/or apps, you'll need to go with the latest version at twice the price. However, for streaming movies and tv programming without any of the other bells and whistles, this is still the smartest choice. We also have a Roku 3 and the Apple is definitely more stable. Before getting this, we had subscribed to Sling TV primarily to be able to get HBO Now on the Roku. The rest of Sling's content was useless to us and their interface was the worst I have ever seen, so we were paying a total of $35/month just for HBO. Dropping the $20 monthly fee for Sling is now paying for our Apple TV over and over again. The only negative is the remote which is not much bigger than your doctor's tongue depressor, so it's too easy to press the wrong button.
Pros: Intuitive interface Stable Excellent video and audio quality Good selection of content
Cons: Remote is much too small No Amazon Prime
So Apple released this version of the Apple TV many, many years ago - 2012 to be exact (2013 if you want to include the upgraded wifi and bluetooth capabilities) - and it's only become more capable as time has marched on. While it doesn't have access to as many online video services as competitors like FireTV and Roku, it does have much better versions of the apps for access to common services, like Netflix and Hulu, than the FireTV and Roku have.
It's also the no-brainer streaming box for households running with other iOS devices and Macintosh computers, or those who have heavily invested in the iTunes media ecosystem.
While this box is becoming long in tooth, the price has improved to where it needs to be. It may only have a 1080p picture, but chances are that 1080p picture is higher quality than the 1080p picture of competing devices, even on the same streaming service (case in point - I was given a FireTV box and ran both devices side by side while playing House of Cards from Netflix - while some parts of scenes were a little brighter on the FTV, the ATV had less noise in the picture).
If you're looking for a basic 1080p streaming box and you don't already have a smart TV, this is a decent pick. If you have an investment in the Apple ecosystem of hardware and software and want an easy way to put your media on the big screen, this is a great option. However, if you already own a smart TV or you're not an user of Apple stuff, look elsewhere.
Pros: Apple integration Great picture for 1080p Supports Dolby Digital 5.1 audio from many sources Regular software updates Best in class apps to access online streaming services
Cons: 2012 hardware Stuck at 1080p No DD+ 7.1 or any DTS audio Not going to be as capable as the upcoming Apple TV 4
My son used this at college and suggested it. So, I bought it and also agree that it is awesome. Thankfully, I have multiple "Apple" devices in the house so that when I'm using one to watch a movie (you can also use a laptop), I can still use another device to scroll through my FB feed or other online activities. It is plug and play! Noting to it. I bought a multi-port USB hub because my TV only has 3 usb inputs. This way, I ca always leave it connected without removing any other devices. Basically, any online video streams directly from your device hrough Apple-TV and to your big-screen! Great item and great price point! I'm happy with it.
Cons: had to buy a USB hub because my TV only has 3 USB inputs and I have multiple devices connected already
Great product, but stopped working 2 weeks out. This is the second Apple TV to stop working. The first was out of warranty. Apple did replace the second faulty unit with a new one in a timely fashion. Tech support did their best to resolve the issues, but could not.
Pros: Program access. Easy to use. Compact size. Good service/support.
Cons: Questionable long term durability.
Easy to setup and configure. We use it mainly to watch HBOGO and Netflix. It doesn't have the buffering problems that watching Netflix on our Samsung Blu-Ray has. My son uses the built-in WWE Network app. He also uses AirPlay to show off his iPad games on the TV.
Pros: Easy of setup and use. Smooth video and great sound. AirPlay.
Cons: Can't add additional apps. You need to run some apps off of your iPad or iPhone.
2nd device for the home; perfect for what we need it for - great for streaming/sharing photos, listening to music and streaming from various providers (HBO Go, Netflix, etc.)
Great device. We have been using Apple TV for 4 years now .
Makes for a great door stop. After a few months of working, it was showing a picture indicating a cable connection to a computer. Not knowing what this meant had to go on line to look it up. Found out this means connect to iTunes to restore. Upon connecting to iTunes to restore, received an error message that said this device was unable to be restored. Took it to the local Apple Store to have it check out only to find I had to get an appointment for the next day to have someone look at it. Now my time is more valuable than what I paid for this device. So I upgraded to a smart TV and use the Apple TV puck as a door stop for my AV room. Every night when I go in to watch the new smart TV I just kick the puck up against the door to keep it closed. (Air currents in the house pop the door open) Works great!
Pros: Great Door Stop
Easy set up and happy to have it at such a great price
Terrific product, easy to install, seemless integration with home network.
Pros: Easy install, seemless network integration.
Cons: Better to have latest apple OS for full functionality with laptop.
Another Apple product that "just works." Very easy to navigate
Pros: Very easy to install and use
Cons: Apple's remote functions well but is too small. Did a google search and was able to find how to program my tv remote to work with Apple TV. It would be nice if apple offered more channels.
This is my second Apple TV box. What I like is that I can stream identical content to both at the same time, so a group of people can be in the living room and another in the media room watching the same movie. The new $69 price point is great. BTW, Apple TV works MUCH BETTER than the apps on my Sony TVs.
Pros: Price, size, functionality
I got this for the sole purpose of Apple Airplay. I unboxed this unit and was streaming iTunes music from my PC to my stereo receiver (connected with optical audio cable) within 10 minutes. For me, this feature alone was worth the money. Heck, I may never watch videos, movies, TV shows or use any of the other features but this simple box allows me to play all of my extensive audio collection (about 75gb of music) throughout my entire house easily. Also, from what I can tell, the AirPlay seems more versatile than that built-in to most modern audio receivers as I was able to quickly access my playlists right from the TV screen. Further, I don't have to even have to leave my TV on once I have it all set up. Or I can just switch inputs on my TV if I want to use the TV for other things such as gaming while AirPlay is running. Nevertheless, if my DVR ever screws up and my wife misses an episode of Scandal, she can buy it for a few bucks through Apple TV. There is so much value here and it's like all Apple products - simple! I only wish it had Pandora but I can stream that through my Xbox One so it's not like I can't get it another way.
Pros: Apple AirPlay and much more! Simple to use!
Cons: No Pandora
Works great! Wireless network our apple products to view with a projector.
Pros: Reasonable cost, simple wireless, easy to configure with Apple.
Cons: At first, didn't think I could connect with PC, but good YouTube instructions helped!
Easy to install, gives me more programs to chose from, can watch t.v. series one episode after another.
It just works. Very intuitive. Nothing to complain about here.
Very simple set up and provides connection to your Apple account for all of your entertainment.
Pros: Ease of set up, functionality, price
Does exactly what the description says it will do.
Pros: Adds a significant step towards cutting the cable. Can watch already played programs without all the commercials, eliminates DVR.
Cons: Not enough channels YET.
A new addition to our media room as there was a need to be able to stream the one billion movies and TV shows (that we have purchased on iTunes for our kids in recent years). This device talks to our iMac and enables us to pull up movies, TV shows and music in our media room. Can't beat this technology for the price of $99.
I really enjoy picture quality but not enough too watch
Pros: great picture quality easy too use
Cons: not enough apps
I suppose it is my fault for not realizing, but I bought this with the sole intention of using it on vacation.....only to find that because it doesn't support a web browser, I couldn't enter the password and therefore, couldn't use it. I suppose I will be able to use it at home, however.
I have used Roku, Apple TV, and Amazon Fire TV. I prefer Apple TV with Airplay giving it a slight edge over Amazon Fire TV, but both devices are worth the extra money over Roku.
Pros: It interfaces seamlessly with other Apple Devices.
Cons: Amazon Fire TV is faster.
If you are a Mac person, like me you will love this Apple TV for streaming. If you have Mac's you can stream your photos and music. I believe PC's too. But Mac's are seamless. Of course you need iTunes...If you travel, take it with you and stream from wherever.. It is definitely small enough..Well worth the price...
Pros: User friendly. Everything works well.
Cons: Remote could be bigger.
The service at Crutchfield is excellent and the product is always good quality.
Pros: Easy to use
Cons: No vudu
Great with iphone5 to show pix on TV. Also, use to stream Netflixs
Pros: Ease to use
Easy set up Easy to use. Has all the internet channels at my finger tips
Pros: Great picture quality Nice remote
Worked as expected, support with any question as always was superb.
Pros: Great picture, useful and effective apps, easy to operate, outstanding support.
Cons: None that I wasn't aware of or didn't care about.
TV watching could not be easier. Right now I just use Apple TV for new movies but there is so much more to explore. I like the "pay as you watch" idea instead of a monthly fee. The movies are top billboard and the streaming quality is excellent. Even the sound is top notch Digital Dolby. I had Netflix and hated the choice of old B rated movies, slow streaming quality and dull sound. I like quality and Apple TV delivers.
Pros: Quality HD picture, clear Digital Dolby sound, ease of use. Pay as you watch, no fees.
Cons: None from me, just what the doctor ordered.
Great product. Easy to use out of the box.
We have 3 iphones and 3 ipads and buying the Apple TV completed our Apple products. The kids are so happy now that they can use their Apple devices and view it on our 55" Samsung LED TV.
It' good make you TV connected online. plus pickup everything from your computer through home sharing . i also like apple TV Mirror i wish i tunes had more apps.
Had an older apple tv previously and was skeptical about buying one without a hard drive (as they used to come). Could have been happier. Set up was easy, and this version offered many more options and consistent air play. My last one made mirroring other devices a bit difficult. Love the option for HBO go right from the device.
Pros: Quick Set up Mirroring with no problem Small footprint Seemingly no interference with any other components
Love this product! It makes watching TV/movies, listening/downloading music and sharing pictures so easy. Service and delivery was quick and excellent!
There's nothing more to say about this then it is amazing if you have Apple products. Airplay is amazing and useful.
On another note. It is sooo much better then the Ruku box I had before. So smooth.
Cons: None really. Does what it needs to do.
A great way to interface your IPAD to your TV! Always shop at Crutchfield, they know what customer service is all about.
Pros: works just like all Apple products you may have, easy set-up.
Easy to setup, works awesome.
Easy to setup..... works seamlessly!
Pros: Small footprint....ease of setup
This product only works with 2011 or newer Macs. Incompatible with all other versions, like mine. That was not clearly stated in this ad. Only deep digging at the Apple Store garnered the critical info. Also, concerning the "money back guarantee", well, $10 was deducted "for my convenience" for the return label. So, it ended a 90% to me and not the stated 100%. I would have done better buying locally. Be sure to read the fine print before ordering. It could save you some money,as the prices are often no real bargain and easily matched or bettered elsewhere.
Cons: Incompatible with my version of Mac
Works awesome. Airplay and mirroring work flawlessly. Makes watching movies from my iPad and MacBook so easy!
Pros: Easy set up, easy to use.
Cons: Price, drops airplay every now and again
Better than any other TV access product I have tried. the interface is classic Apple. Elegant and well thought out.
Pros: Good range of choices for content.
It's a Apple product, you plug it in, walk through the EASY setup and it works!
Pros: WORKS GREAT
Great product wished it had pandora on it but really easy to use
Pros: Easy to use
Cons: No pandora
This is my second Apple TV. The first one I added to my living room system over a year ago and it works so well I decided to add a second one to the "man cave" system in the basement. Its as simple as plug and play and works great for streaming web content as well as listening to my iTunes collection. I have yet to encounter a problem with it.
Pros: Simple to use and reliable.
Great function for viewing web pages and audio from idevices. HDMI hook up with digital optical audio. Wifi works well even on a different floor of house from router. Just what we needed.
Absolutely love the newest addition to my Apple Household. Works perfectly as expected and i am now able to watch great movies from my ipad on my 55" LED.
Pros: Very easy set up. Easy access to all my Apple music. Identical format to what I see on my iPad and MacBook Pro. Netflix looks great as well. Great if your iPad is jailbroken.
Cons: Limited apps. options (should be more like the app store for Mac and IOS)Crutchfield response on September 13, 2013 This is referring to "other dealers, retailers, or eCommerce internet sites whether positive or negative".
This is pretty much plug and play. I love the ease. Works great with my Harmony 900. Wish 7.1 was more prevalent though. Will still use blu-ray for certain movies for the sound alone. Worth the $ for sure.
Netflix comes alive with Apple TV. We have a great BluRay player from Crutchfield but the Apple TV is much better at handling and organizing Netflix, PodCasts, News and anything else.
Pros: Fast and reliable
Cons: None as yet
Great product. I use this mostly to watch podcasts on one of my TVs. It has many other features I'm sure others can take advantage of like AirPlay mirroring where you can mirror the output of an Apple device like a Macbook or iOS device.
Pros: Price, form factor, ease of setup
Cons: I would like to see more content providers provide apps for this device.
We are thrilled with Apple TV. We are able to use Netflix and view past TV series we have missed. The best part was free mailing and tech support (which we needed)!
Love it! Bought it to watch movies and have used it daily since the purchase.
Very easy to set up and use, nice minimalistic desing, easy to use... I shouldn't wait to long to get it, for the price you can't lose. Is nice to be able to connect (airplay) your IOS or Mac device. good variety of apps, but wish it had more.
Pros: Easy to connect Easy to use Love the airplay feature Price Build quality Design
Cons: Limitted apps. options (should be more like the app store for Mac and IOS)
All I wanted to do was to put photos on a TV screen, tried DLNA with 4 devices and a win 8 PC no good. With Apple TV, you get a fantastic, easy to use product that just works. AirPlay Mirror is amazing, and I can get my photo stream pictures. The software is fast and intuitive, puts the Samsung and LG smart stacks to shame
Apple really needs to open up an SDK for this product, and it will finally take off
Pros: Typical apple: easy to use, intuitive
Cons: Needs more software
This is a great product if you have other apple products. The best feature is the PhotStream, Apple Airplay. They airplay feature is just amazing and simple to use. About the only drawback is that it that it does not support a lot of formats like the WD Live but what it does it does really well.
Pros: airplay, photostream, ease of use
Cons: does not support all video formats
Love this product. Anything on your iPhone or iPad can be shown on your TV, music plays wirelessly, photo slide shows are played. Simple to set up and works great! I replaced a Denon iPod dock and the Apple TV is MUCH better.
Pros: Simple to set up and works great
Easy hook up, very small remote too easy to use, and there needs to be a free iPad or iPhone ap to download that looks just like the remote....and functions the same
Excelent for movies, tranfers photos from my ipad
Hook-up was a breeze. All intuitive. I'm a Mac, always have been (Only use PC @ work).
Pros: Ease of HDMI & Wireless cable set-up, seamless integration with iPhones (4, 5), iPads (reg. & mini), Mac laptop & desktop, iTunes, Netflix.
Cons: Haven't uncovered one yet.
very satisfied with apple TV and more importantly very happy with crutchfield in providing very fast ordering service and also giving rewards for future purchases... i am able to buy this product with rewards from my previous purchase and hence got the best price with the best possible service... extremely satisfied with crutchfield.. keep up the great work
I bought this for my 9yr old daughter to watch Netflix. This was very simple to configure and I loved the fact that it has both options of wired or wireless. I will be buying one for me
Pros: simple to configure and I it has both options of wired or wireless.
Cons: Can't think of one yet
Great little hockey puck size device. Love to stream music and photos through it. Best electronic value you can add to your media system. I have 4 of them spread throughout the house, including one outside in a covered gazebo.
Pros: Easy to use and set up.
Cons: Wish more channels are offered.
Apple TV is a ok choice if you are starting with nothing. ( No smart TV, No wifi Blueray player, No PS3/Xbox/etc. No a/v receiver) Chances are that you already have some device that can already do most of what apple tv does. (netflix, hulu, youtube etc. are all available in other web based devices like bluray players, a/v receiver, or gaming systems; You WILL need one of these anyway to complete your system) Apple TV offers very little over these other required components in your system and is therefore really redundand! Only feature it offers over others is capability to view your iphone/ipod directly on tv, but there are apps that can do this. BTW, apple tv does not fully support older apple devices (like iphone4 and older, why?)
Pros: apple logo on box, airplay integration.
Cons: another box with wires/connections that is really redundant and not needed in any decent av system
For only a hundred bucks, I now have access to all my music on the Apple Cloud. Could not have been easier. Great recommendation by the Crutchfield staff. Thanks.
Pros: Very easy set up. Easy access to all my Apple music. Identical format to what I see on my iPad and MacBook Pro. Netflix looks great as well.
Cons: Netflix is about the only channel of interest. Roku has more variety.
works great if you know how to use it
This purchase was the finishing touch to our home theater system. As with any Apple product, it truely is "plug and Play". I just had to program the NAD receiver and we're off flawlessly steaming movies...nice picture quality and no glitches. It is kind of freaky how all of our Apple devices automaticaly sync to it.
Does a great job for streaming and music.
Really great product. There are some older videos that I have to covert to a compatible format to be able to view them with the apple tv, but other than that, great product.
I primarily bought the device for the MLB app and the Apple TV is serving its purpose well. I am a dvr lover. So, I would not give up the way I watch tv now to go with Apple TV or one of its competitors. But, for specific apps like the MLB app, the Apple TV is great.
I had a Roku before this. The apps were great. But, the box was cheap (no digital optical audio out) compared to the Apple TV. I would buy the Apple TV again without hesitation.
Pros: -MLB app (U-verse does not have the MLB Extra Innings package) -free digital music -tons of podcast -extremely easy setup
Cons: -occasional buffering (My internet speed is supposed to be up to 12 MBPS and I still get some buffering which is probably normal for these types of media players.)
We just got it and its works great and makes using i pad go wireless and its so easy to setup and use. best buy ever....
Pros: fast easy seamless setup
Cons: so small we thought we did not get the whole thing..
Very easy to link from my receiver to the Plasma TV and sync with my ipad.
Pros: Ease of setup and flexibility.
It's Apple.....what else is there to say.
Pros: Great picture!
Great product. Easy to connect and use. Plays very well with other products. Should be an Apple user.
Pros: Compact, easy to connect, can be controlled by an iPad or iPhone
Cons: Should be an apple user.
This product is Fantastic!
Pros: Easy to setup. I like using it more than my smart tv. Allows me to Stream my music from my IPhone or IPad using both my music Library or radio stations that I listen to.
I honestly couldn't be more happy with this product and will be purchasing additional units for other parts of my home. It does everything it says it does and makes streaming audio/video from my family's iPhones and iPad a breeze. The user-friendliness couldn't be any better. The primary uses of my Apple TV include streaming Youtube videos, TuneIn radio stations and my iTunes library. I haven't embraced the Netflix or Hulu waves just yet, so I'm afraid I'm not using the device to its full capabilities. There is so much more to do with this fantastic little box than the apps that come preloaded. Download the free remote app and you can leave the IR remote (that comes with the device) in the box! "Mirroring" your Apple devices is also a breeze. Fantastic product. Fantastic value. Fantastic service. I'll gladly spend my money with Crutchfield again and again because of their superior support and technical knowledge. You won't be disappointed with the Apple TV!
Pros: Ease of use. Endless possibilities. Download the free remote app and you can leave the IR remote in the box. Device itself is very small.
Cons: Cannot think of any.
I already had the Apple TV 720p models. We just bought a new 55" screen for the family room and needed a Apple TV 1080p model. I didn't want to pay the cable companies more money to connect us to HD channels for old shows I don't even like. Most of our shows and movies are from Netflix, Hulu+ or iTunes. If you have an iPad or iTunes on your computer, you can play your videos/music on your TV.
Pros: Compact and powerful.
Cons: None, so far.
It's great not having to hook the computer up to the TV anymore to watch rented movies off iTunes
Product simply works like it should. I am not very computer savvy, but I can follow directions. I did use ethernet cable to my router rather than the wireless method. I plugged HDMI cable into my Sony rear projection TV, and then power cord into a line conditioner that the other components are plugged into. The remote worked immediately. The onscreen set up was easy except the part about Apple ID and connecting to Netflix. Once I just enrolled direct to Netflix using my computer, then went back to onscreen with Apple TV and entered my newly acquired Netflix password, problem solved. The only reason I purchased the box was for Netflix and that is all I use it for. I highly recommend it for super simplicity and very small footprint.
Pros: Simple to set up and use, works as intended. Very compact.
For me Apple TV is a way to use an apple propitiatory connection from i-tunes on my PC to my Denon Amplifier. Even though the Denon has Airplay avoiding the CAT 6 cable seems to be a plus. AppleTV allows you to run HDMI from it to my Denon amplifier. I Tested Airplay from i-tunes to Airport Express to amp. In addition as mentioned prior, i-tunes to Denon's Airplay. Apple TV seems to give me the best connection with the least amount of distortion and feedback. Providing a crisp, clean, precise, deep, rich sound.
Outside of Airplay Apple TV has its limitations. It would have been perfect for me years ago when I was in college or just out of school. I am 39 so that was a while ago. However, not having cable etc... For the price Apple TV would have allowed me to watch MLB and NHL in addition to ordering movies via i-Tunes, Netflix etc..... With an i-Pad you can stream from it to AppleTV. Therefore, for example you could watch a game on ESPN3 and stream it from the i-Pad thru Apple TV to your flat panel. However HDMI out handles this just fine as well. If not better. For business one could use it in presentation. Connecting to AppleTV from an i-Pad.
All that said. I give it 4 stars. The reason so there is a little something there for everyone. The product allows you to create from it and with it. However, I prefer the functionality of some applications on AppleTV to run from other devices.
This is the best TV interface for all of your apple products. Also Apple tv has the best Netflix interface I've used. Can't wait until my Directv contract is up, I'll save about $100 every month. As I do not watch much on tv that I can't get on Netflix.
Pros: Easy setup and use
Very easy to hook up. I bought to stream netflix and it has worked very well. It's only been a couple of weeks, but so far so good.
Pros: Easy to hook up and configure
Cons: None yet.
It's an Apple, so it works flawlessly. It may become obsolete like my three prior I-pods but that is by Apple corporate design. Right now it beams the I-photo photos and sound to our Samsung Blue ray and Denon 1613 avr without any problems. If I had a PC could have saved $ but my wife likes the Apple "computer" we have so be it.
Pros: It works well.
Cons: Apple will likely make it obsolete by the end of the year so I have to by an Apple tv-2 .
Wanted an EASY way to watch Netflix movies on our TV. Apple TV was perfect! Easy to hook up - one power plug - one cable from Apple TV to TV (had to purchase this seperately) - a little futzing to get sound to come out through sound bar. And then: Streaming Netflix Movies! Didn't have to purchase new wireless router - current one fast enough to deliver movies without buffering.
Pros: Really easy to integrate into computer/tv setup.
Cons: None so far.
The best way to get content from your iPad/iPhone to a tv. As always crutchfield is wonderful.
Pros: Netflix and Hulu plus.
Cons: Hbo go and other apps on iOS can block airplay. I am told that OS X will not block anything via AirPlay.
Cannot believe how user friendly Apple Tv is Set up was 1-2-3- No directions even needed
Apple TV is one the best product around, easy to use and set up good quality 1080p and sound
Pros: Small device
I ordered this latest version on 11/23/12. As always I order from Crutchfield, the package was delivered very soon and in excellent condition.
This was an upgrade from my previous Apple TV 720p vs. this latest version, 1080p.
With the previous version I never had any problem. But with this new one had some Netflix streaming problems.
After some weeks using for streaming, from Netflix, it didn't work any more. All the time appear the message: "There's a problem communicating with Netflix. Try again later"
I have tried everything: restart, reset all settings and restore, but nothing works.
I even tried advice from a website but it seems it doesn't work with this new version.
I called for tech support, for Spanish customers, but they didn't have any (I think all were very busy at the moment Dec-15) They only have available tech support English. Well I can write and read in English, but I am not so fluently to speak it.
So I think I have to send it back to exchange for another one.
Pros: Compatible with all Apple products
Cons: Not so compatible with non Apple products, like this one, Netflix
Thanks to crutchfield, I always know I would get quality service backed up with great return policy and support.
When first connected, it would not detect any wi-fi connection. Fiddle with it for several hours to no avail. Called Crutchfield tech support and was offered to return the unit at their expense (Fantastic tech support by the way, always helpful and friendly service). Luckily was able to figure it out on my own by resetting it. Under setting, just go to RESET, then it would detect the wi-fi. Has been working fine since then. Especially like the Youtube and Vimeo streaming.
Pros: Easy to use
Cons: Not much features. Occasionally dropping wi-fi, might need to reset the unit to get it reconnected.
Amazing product! Started up very easily, very easy to install to your iTunes and it connects to your iPad easily. Works good with an ir receiver if you want to hook that up.
Pros: Quick and easy to install. Works great and not slow at all.
Cons: Having found any yet.
Works as advertised.
A must have media receiver. Very easy set-up with extremely fast streaming capability.
Excellent! True Plug 'n' Play simplicity.
Pros: Fast, simple and small!
Cons: The original AppleTV had storage. I wish this one does as well.
Unit has all the connections I need for my system. I will enjoy listening to music throughout the house.
Pros: Small and lightweight.
Cons: Does not have a stand for positioning it vertically. This is really minor but would be nice to have as it would save some space in my stereo stand.
Great product. We had the 2nd generation Apple TV, so this newer version is a considerable upgrade. For one, it's smaller and sleeker. You barely notice it on the shelf. It also has a more fluid and attractive interface. Oodles of new plugins. I LOVE the MLB.TV. The wireless connectivity is faster and more reliable. We used to have a ton of problems (skipping, buggering) when streaming iTunes music before. We ditched our cable, so the Apple TV is where we rent movies, buy TV seasons and get access to our music to play through our new surround sound system.
Pros: Wireless (good connection), attractive interface, MLB.TV, size, etc.
Another outstanding product from Apple.
Pros: Easy to set up and use this device.
Cons: I have not found a con.
Glad I waited for the latest ATV. The user interface has improved onscreen has improved as well as the resolution of videos to 1080. My first rental of Marley display beautifully and stopped by buffer only once on the second viewing. I upgraded my DSL speed from 3 bps to 6 bps and it seems fine. Cable ISP at 10 bps is the next choice. The music from iTunes (+ 7,000) and the pictures from my computer (+ 4,000) make this a joy for me and for guests to my home. I subscribed to Match ($25) and all my music is in iCloud. Remarkable little tool. Wish that movies were less money each to purchase but the Rotten Tomatoes feature and a little discipline fix that. My next Mac acquisitions will be the iPhone 5 and the latest Mac Mini both rumored to be released by Christmas '12.
Pros: Really cool remote control. Popular with young and old alike. Inviting screen options. Many options for the display of photos, slide show and screen saver
Cons: iTunes store costs. Apple negotiated the most generous of all deals to Hollywood's studios and artists for rights. Alternative Netflix is cheaper and has large quantity of offerings but the quality is dreadful for online streaming.
The unit is a nice size/shape/look, as with most Apple products. The built in power converter is great - no transformer to plug in. The unit works well, and was easy to set-up. I primarily use it for Air Play, and it works great.
Pros: size/shape/function, and a built in charger
Cons: will not work with non Apple products (yeah, I know, it is an apple)
Excellent machine! I would buy it again and again.
Pros: User friendly. More than what I expected from a small box.
Once again, Apple exceeds my expectations.
Pros: Easy connectivity with other Apple devices, the ability to play all your existing iTunes music, movies, and shows. The remote control is simple and intuitive without hundreds of unnecessary buttons.
Cons: Remote is very small and hides itself easily.
This thing is great. Now I can watch anything that is on my computer or ipod on my HDTV. It couldn't be easier to set up and use. I haven't even started using all of the features that come with it, like netflix. Plus my itunes translated all my old home videos that were in like 5 different formats to Quicktime and I can watch all of them. I can't believe all he stuff it does for the price.
Pros: Watch anything that you can on your computer/ipod on you HDTV.
Cons: You need wifi to do this.
Well, for starters, this is a TINY device! It allows me to play my iTunes music and display my iPhoto media AND mirrors my iPhone and iPad2! It seems to stream more elegantly and efficiently than my PSP3 (handles Netflix well). For the price, this device does a lot. I am glad to have added it to my growing multimedia conglomeration.
Pros: Does a lot for the price. Tiny!
Cons: The remote is a bit bigger than a pack of gum! Be careful not to lose it!
I was a little hesitant to buy an apple tv, but after seeing how the iPad can play movies wirelessly, I was sold on it. I love apple tv!
Pros: Displays iPad video flawlessly
Cons: Limited use otherwise
You may not notice many differences in this latest version of the "New" Apple TV compared to the previous one. In fact, with the lasted upgrade to your old Apple TV, they look down-rite identical. The major difference, of course, is the resolution increase to the now standard 1080P. Not all content will be 1080P of course but most Apple Movie rentals will be, either now, or later and the change IS noticeable. The new interface looks and works great. My only negative would be the absence of Pandora, which is understandable, but surely desired by most people who would buy this technology. I bought this one for my main TV and moved the older unit to my bedroom. Both work great. Also, setup was a breeze and was easier than the first generation. The wireless capability of the unit is superb, easily surpassing the ROKU that i once owned. Review in a nutshell: Buy It !
Pros: Price, size and ability to use iPhone, iPod touch and iPad as a remote. iCloud compatible. Seems to pick up my wireless signal much better that the Roku XS 2 that i had.
Cons: Absence of Pandora.
It never made sense to me until I saw it operate with iCloud. No I have access to everything!
This was one of the simplest installations of any technology platform in my experience--virtually plug and play. The only speed bump was with Netflix: I had to call them to determine why I couldn't access the site. A simple email suggested resetting the modem and the Apple TV. That resolved the issue. I haven't yet discovered all that's out there yet, but for the price, it's a good investment.
I have an apple TV 1 gen and will be buying a 4th gen soon after seeing the quality picture. STAY away from buying these on online auction sites. When you buy from a reputable dealer you only pay this much but on the auction sites they are ripping people off for 150.00 and up for these and older gens!
Pros: High quality audio and video as long as you have the bandwidth with your ISP
Cons: Wish it had storage like Gen 1 but then you can't record these streams anyway. Wish they made one like V4 and v1 together!

This may sound a bit crazy but did you have the volume on the device turned up? I've noticed what you describe several times and each time the volume on the device was way down. Turning it up solved the problem. [ David Oct 18, 2015 ]
I wish I could help, but lack the technical knowledge. ALL 4 of the Apple TV's that I purchased were Christmas gifts for the Grandchildren. Good Luck! [ STEPHEN J Aug 02, 2015 ]

I forwarded your question to an Advisor and they responded with the following: Yes you can! You will use the built in Airplay technology on the Apple TV. AirPlay lets you stream music wirelessly right from your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch to your home entertainment system & HDTV. Just connect the Apple TV to your Yamaha receiver via an HDMI cable, follow the set up steps and you are ready to go! If you would like to discuss further you can contact an Advisor directly by phone (1-800-324-9695) or online chat. [ Krissy Apr 29, 2014 ] Staff
there are a few apps where local content is available, not all, Also, you can buy a digital antenna and use that to view local channel broadcast from the stations directly. That's free too. So, you can get much of what you watch on cable on Apple TV, but you have to be creative. [ Eric Jan 20, 2016 ]
I know that the name apple "TV" is deceiving and maybe apple was wrong to name it that. No, you cannot watch local channels unless you have internet and the channel has an apple app. This device is for watching internet content on your TV instead of your computer like YouTube, NetFlix and other apps [ DAVID Feb 10, 2014 ]
nester, I really can't recommend Apple TV. It works fine sometimes and other times it won't work at all. You need a very strong wireless network to get consistent results. Steve [ STEVEN E Feb 09, 2014 ]
no. this is for web content such as netflix and huluplus. it does not have a tuner for local stations. [ Scott Feb 07, 2014 ]
Nestor--My apple tv is linked to a receiver with a HDMI cable. The receiver is hooked up to the internet and to my cable box. Therefore I can get regular cable shows(including local channels), cable on demand shows and all the shows that you can get with apple tv. If you are asking if you can drop the cable box and still get local channels, I don't think so. I hope this helps. [ MIKE Feb 07, 2014 ]
Well as of now ABC is on the view list and the weather channel but if you want local new ect. Then you will need to augment the Apple TV with you antenna feed. [ ERNIE Feb 07, 2014 ]
No, you will still need cable to watch your local channels. [ SAMAR Feb 07, 2014 ]
Apple TV does not provide local channels [ Tim Feb 07, 2014 ]
Unfortunately you can not get local channels through this device. The alternative is to see if your TV can pick them up on its own or using one of the antennas available. [ John Feb 07, 2014 ]
You should be able to connect this directly to your receiver using any of the available optical inputs. This will provide audio to the receiver. You will still need to run an HDMI cable from this unit to your TV for the video signal. [ Jeff Dec 12, 2013 ] Staff
