Our take on the Profile AP1040

Give your sound system some West Coast style with a California Series amplifier from Profile. These brushed aluminum and chrome beauties look expensive, so you may not believe your eyes when you check the price! And, you get high-end features like gold-plated outputs, a brushed aluminum case, variable filters, and a 3-year warranty — for less than you might expect.

With the AP1040 4-channel amp, powering up your whole sound system has never been easier — or more affordable! The adjustable bass boost lets you dial in some serious low end punch, and the variable high- and low-pass filters let you contour the sound to match your vehicle. You even get a variable treble boost of up to 12 dB at 8,000 Hz for crisp, clean sound across the musical spectrum.

Features

Power Strip: This Profile California AP1040 amplifier features a bright red power light strip on the top center of the unit to indicate when the amp is turned on. The 4-3/4" power light strip consists of six LEDs. The green LED on the power/speaker terminal side of the amplifier will also light when power is sent to the amp.

High-to-Low Level Converters: The amp is equipped with two external high (speaker) level to low (line) level converters to allow you to connect the amplifier to a receiver or factory radio without RCA preamp outputs or with only one pair of preouts. After splicing the receiver's speaker wires to the converter's speaker wires, you can simply plug the converter into the amp's RCA preamp input.

Line Outputs: The AP1040 includes a pair of RCA line outputs for sending an unfiltered signal to another amplifier or component without splitting the signal. Note: The line outputs pass through the signal from channels 3 and 4.

Protection Circuits: This amp has three types of protection circuits: DC offset, short circuit and thermal protection. The red LED on the left side of the amplifier will light to indicate that the amplifier has gone into protection.

Built-In Crossovers: This amplifier includes built-in variable low pass and high-pass filters, one for the front channels (1 & 2) and one for the rear channels (3 & 4), each with a slope of 12dB/octave. The low-pass filters are continuously variable from 50-250Hz, while the high-pass filters are continuously variable from 80Hz to 1.2kHz. Each pair of channels has a three-way switch which lets you choose between low-pass, high-pass, or full-range operation.

Bass/Treble Boost: The rear channels have a bass boost circuit, variable from 0 to 12dB at 45 Hz. The front channels have a treble boost circuit, variable from 0 to 12dB at 8kHz.

Inputs and Outputs Notes

Gold-plated Terminals: The AP1040 features gold-plated speaker and power terminals and RCA jacks for maximum signal transfer and corrosion resistance.

Set Screw Terminals: The power and ground connections feature set-screw terminals that can accept up to 4-gauge bare wire. The remote turn-on and speaker output set-screw terminals can accept up to 6-gauge bare wire. Two Allen wrenches (2.5mm and 3mm) are supplied to tighten/loosen the set screws.

Remote Turn-on: In addition to turning on and turning off the amplifier via the head unit's remote output, the remote turn-on also operates the reset circuit for the amplifier's protection system. The remote turn-on lead must be connected to the head unit in order to reset the protection circuits.

Warranty Note

Warranty: The manual indicates a 1-year parts and labor warranty, however Profile has extended the warranty to three years parts and labor for units purchased from Crutchfield.

Get something BETTER

Written By courtney, 17972 PA on Monday, February 09, 2009

Sounds good, a little Alternator whine, for the price I can live with it.

BIG PROBLEM.....One of the RCA input jacks have a poor connection at the board.

YEP, gonna have to open a brand new amp and repair poor manufacturing standards..(or I could pay for shipping, wait around with no amp, etc, etc..)

PAR FOR THE COARSE, I GUESS.

High quality

Written By Jose, Sanlinas PR on Thursday, February 05, 2009

Profile has technical representatives; some brands can't be reached at the phone. The AP1040 has a THD of 0.05% plus a Signal to Noise of 103db. Revise the specifications of any amplifier and you'll find that most do not have both an under 1% THD and a Signal to Noise of over 100db at once; at any price. Don't worry about the Damping Factor specifications however, anything over 20 (any amplifier will be much higher) will not have an effect as some manufactures boost. The unpainted metal look is more pleasing than the black HA sister line. Add the THD of all your equipment and don't settle for just an amp with 1% THD. Use good cables like street wires Zero9 if you place it in the trunk; longer cables runs require high quality RCA cables. For multiple amps set ups (not for single amps) I would have liked a gauge 1/0 power terminal size to decrease power looses. AB class are more reliable than D class so I am planning on adding the AP1000M in the near future (less significant for bass than for highs the THD and Signal to Noise for the AB1000M beats any D class at any price). Latest models do not shut down when heat builds up they just decrease power.

Great Amp for Price

Written By cma, Annapolis, MD on Friday, January 09, 2009

This amp has plenty of headroom to drive a four channel Boston Coax system. Lots of punch and clarity. No noise.

Was originally using built-in amp in a Pioneer AVIC D3 with Boston Acoustic SX95 in front Doors and SX65 in Rears of Dodge Ram QC pickup. I drove around like this for a year, always tweaking the EQ and sound processing, but never getting the right "feel".

A couple weeks ago, I upgraded to an Alpine 40Wattx4 RMS amp, and that made a noticeable improvement, but I was left wondering if more power would give even more clarity and punch? The speakers are rated at 50W and 60W RMS respectively and I suspected that 40Watts per channel was not enough.

I am glad I took a chance on the Profile. For a few more dollars, this has twice the wattage. It is definitely a bigger sounding amp than the Alpine, even though some people suggested this amp is overrated. Its footprint is a little bit bigger than the Alpine, but it weighs almost twice as much.

I finally feel I have gotten over the "hump" in SQ. Listening experience is very satisfying and has "feel" that the smaller Alpine lacked. The beauty of the Profile Amp is that I wanted to keep it simple and inexpensive, and the Profile gives me this. Quite a nice sounding system with just door coax speakers and one 4ch amplifier.

Thanks Crutchfield.

Why pay More?

Written By ray, Denver on Monday, January 05, 2009

Just hooked this 4 channel up today. I am using it to power two pillar column tweeters and two 6 x 9 polk momos in boxes in the back of my Nissan Frontier. My 12 Woofer is being run by a little 2 channel RF under passenger seat. I looked inside this amp (I voided warranty) and it appears to be well made. The wire connectors on it are of better quality than amps 2-3 times the price. Hook up is easy w/ the exception that this amp is large in size. It went under the drivers seat and had to be oriented just right in order to fit. My 7 speakers now sound like dynamite. Also the manual is well written. The documentation you get with a Crutchfields order is also quite helpful. While I think Fosgate is a very reliable amp, I just dont why somone would look to pay more within this power range especially since 4 channels become pricey. Time will tell.

Profile is the best

Written By Brett, Cibolo, TX on Sunday, December 28, 2008

I first used Profile back in 1996 when I got my first car. I've never used any other amplifiers in my life. These amplifiers last and can take a beating.

I first purchased this particular amplifier back in early 2004 and it's still going strong.

The only con is the integrated crossover doesn't completely block all frequencies, but, with today's modern technology, almost all receivers have built-in crossovers so it's not really an issue.

Award yourself, buy a Profile amp today!

Great Choice for most applications

Written By jsrvette, Colorado Springs, CO on Friday, October 10, 2008

This is my second Profile Amp. The first one is two years old from their mono line and runs my sub without flaw. The latest being the AP1040 was easy to install and adjust. This four channel amp does provide a clean, crisp sound and I am very satisfied thus far. Both these Profile Amps replaced high end products that both failed with a few years. Profile amps have a great warranty and their prices are very competitve.

Great Amp

Written By Mitch, Atlanta, GA on Thursday, August 21, 2008

I got this amp to beef up the sound for my JVC head unit and Polk db series speakers in my 2003 VW Passat. Even though I installed the head unit myself, I had this amp professionally installed. WOW, what a difference it has made. So far, its been an excellent addition to my system & I don't regret buying it all all.

The quality coming out of my Polk speakers is now 10 times better than it was. Its a great amp for the money and allows you to get really great sound without breaking your bank account. I'm new to buying amps, but I would definitely get this brand for any future vehicles. Crutchfield customer service was great as usual too.

No Brainer

Written By Jason, Orlando on Thursday, July 03, 2008

I've had this amp for 2 yrs now and have not had ONE problem w/ it. I have it powering 4-2way 6.5's out of channels 1 and 2 and have a bridged 12" sub out of channels 3 and 4 in a toyota tundra and it BANGS! I've had the alpine this and that, two 12" phase 2 fosgate systems before and for $150 bucks, this amp ownes them all. So to sum it all up, i'm running a FULL system off of this one amp and get nothing but people saying,"this is the cleanest loudest system i've ever heard". Given it is in a truck cab. If I had one complaint it would be that the sub cannnot keep up w/ the high's. Not sure if its becuase its an entry level sub or the sub is underpowered.....But, think about it, you could buy 2 of these amps (with 3yr warranty!!!!!!!) for the price of any other 4 channel "name brand" amp......WOW.

Profile AP1040

Written By Michael, Succasunna, NJ on Thursday, May 15, 2008

I have had this amplifier for a few months now. It's a great deal for the money, but signal noise goes right through it to your speakers. Other then that no complaints. It's got a ton of features so you can tune your speakers however you like. The sound quality is great too. Definitely a nice choice for the economically challenged consumer or those who are looking for a reasonably priced amplifier to boost their system.
