My system has plenty of power. Who needs an amp?

You might think you don't need an amp because you have a 400-watt system in your car, or because your new stereo puts out 50 watts a channel. But those are peak wattage ratings, which may boil down to 15 or 20 watts per channel, using the more realistic RMS rating. An amp sends your speakers the power they need to deliver your music with clarity and impact, whether you're using factory speakers or high-performance components. And low-frequency reproduction requires lots of power, so an amp is an absolute must if you're adding a sub to your system.

Get something BETTER

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Sounds good, a little Alternator whine, for the price I can live with it.

BIG PROBLEM.....One of the RCA input jacks have a poor connection at the board.

YEP, gonna have to open a brand new amp and repair poor manufacturing standards..(or I could pay for shipping, wait around with no amp, etc, etc..)

High quality

Written By Jose, Sanlinas PR on Thursday, February 05, 2009

Profile has technical representatives; some brands can't be reached at the phone. The AP1040 has a THD of 0.05% plus a Signal to Noise of 103db. Revise the specifications of any amplifier and you'll find that most do not have both an under 1% THD and a Signal to Noise of over 100db at once; at any price. Don't worry about the Damping Factor specifications however, anything over 20 (any amplifier will be much higher) will not have an effect as some manufactures boost. The unpainted metal look is more pleasing than the black HA sister line. Add the THD of all your equipment and don't settle for just an amp with 1% THD. Use good cables like street wires Zero9 if you place it in the trunk; longer cables runs require high quality RCA cables. For multiple amps set ups (not for single amps) I would have liked a gauge 1/0 power terminal size to decrease power looses. AB class are more reliable than D class so I am planning on adding the AP1000M in the near future (less significant for bass than for highs the THD and Signal to Noise for the AB1000M beats any D class at any price). Latest models do not shut down when heat builds up they just decrease power.

Great Amp for Price

Written By cma, Annapolis, MD on Friday, January 09, 2009

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This amp has plenty of headroom to drive a four channel Boston Coax system. Lots of punch and clarity. No noise.

Was originally using built-in amp in a Pioneer AVIC D3 with Boston Acoustic SX95 in front Doors and SX65 in Rears of Dodge Ram QC pickup. I drove around like this for a year, always tweaking the EQ and sound processing, but never getting the right "feel".

A couple weeks ago, I upgraded to an Alpine 40Wattx4 RMS amp, and that made a noticeable improvement, but I was left wondering if more power would give even more clarity and punch? The speakers are rated at 50W and 60W RMS respectively and I suspected that 40Watts per channel was not enough.

I am glad I took a chance on the Profile. For a few more dollars, this has twice the wattage. It is definitely a bigger sounding amp than the Alpine, even though some people suggested this amp is overrated. Its footprint is a little bit bigger than the Alpine, but it weighs almost twice as much.

I finally feel I have gotten over the "hump" in SQ. Listening experience is very satisfying and has "feel" that the smaller Alpine lacked. The beauty of the Profile Amp is that I wanted to keep it simple and inexpensive, and the Profile gives me this. Quite a nice sounding system with just door coax speakers and one 4ch amplifier.

Thanks Crutchfield.

Why pay More?

Written By ray, Denver on Monday, January 05, 2009

Just hooked this 4 channel up today. I am using it to power two pillar column tweeters and two 6 x 9 polk momos in boxes in the back of my Nissan Frontier. My 12 Woofer is being run by a little 2 channel RF under passenger seat. I looked inside this amp (I voided warranty) and it appears to be well made. The wire connectors on it are of better quality than amps 2-3 times the price. Hook up is easy w/ the exception that this amp is large in size. It went under the drivers seat and had to be oriented just right in order to fit. My 7 speakers now sound like dynamite. Also the manual is well written. The documentation you get with a Crutchfields order is also quite helpful. While I think Fosgate is a very reliable amp, I just dont why somone would look to pay more within this power range especially since 4 channels become pricey. Time will tell.

Profile is the best

Written By Brett, Cibolo, TX on Sunday, December 28, 2008

I first used Profile back in 1996 when I got my first car. I've never used any other amplifiers in my life. These amplifiers last and can take a beating.

I first purchased this particular amplifier back in early 2004 and it's still going strong.

The only con is the integrated crossover doesn't completely block all frequencies, but, with today's modern technology, almost all receivers have built-in crossovers so it's not really an issue.

Award yourself, buy a Profile amp today!

Great Choice for most applications

Written By jsrvette, Colorado Springs, CO on Friday, October 10, 2008

This is my second Profile Amp. The first one is two years old from their mono line and runs my sub without flaw. The latest being the AP1040 was easy to install and adjust. This four channel amp does provide a clean, crisp sound and I am very satisfied thus far. Both these Profile Amps replaced high end products that both failed with a few years. Profile amps have a great warranty and their prices are very competitve.

Great Amp

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I got this amp to beef up the sound for my JVC head unit and Polk db series speakers in my 2003 VW Passat. Even though I installed the head unit myself, I had this amp professionally installed. WOW, what a difference it has made. So far, its been an excellent addition to my system & I don't regret buying it all all.

The quality coming out of my Polk speakers is now 10 times better than it was. Its a great amp for the money and allows you to get really great sound without breaking your bank account. I'm new to buying amps, but I would definitely get this brand for any future vehicles. Crutchfield customer service was great as usual too.

No Brainer

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I've had this amp for 2 yrs now and have not had ONE problem w/ it. I have it powering 4-2way 6.5's out of channels 1 and 2 and have a bridged 12" sub out of channels 3 and 4 in a toyota tundra and it BANGS! I've had the alpine this and that, two 12" phase 2 fosgate systems before and for $150 bucks, this amp ownes them all. So to sum it all up, i'm running a FULL system off of this one amp and get nothing but people saying,"this is the cleanest loudest system i've ever heard". Given it is in a truck cab. If I had one complaint it would be that the sub cannnot keep up w/ the high's. Not sure if its becuase its an entry level sub or the sub is underpowered.....But, think about it, you could buy 2 of these amps (with 3yr warranty!!!!!!!) for the price of any other 4 channel "name brand" amp......WOW.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I have had this amplifier for a few months now. It's a great deal for the money, but signal noise goes right through it to your speakers. Other then that no complaints. It's got a ton of features so you can tune your speakers however you like. The sound quality is great too. Definitely a nice choice for the economically challenged consumer or those who are looking for a reasonably priced amplifier to boost their system.

Exceeding Standards

Written By Carl, Westford, MA on Wednesday, April 16, 2008

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I must say, I bought this amp expecting nothing more than to get my speakers moving with a little more power than the headunit... was I ever wrong. This thing pumps out power like it's nothing. The price is almost decieving, making it look like a cheap budget amp, but the power exceeds it's low price tag. Those engineers in California really know their stuff! I have this baby pushing 2 infinity reference components in the front and 2 6x9 JBL 3-ways in the back. I like my music loud, and my speakers pound louder than ever thanks to this great amp.

The only con I have with this amp is heat problems...
This amp becomes realllllly hot after extended periods of use, but I still haven't had it shut off on me because of thermal protection so I don't mind the heat. I think they may have sacrificed a fan or somthing in order to keep the costs down... but whatever does the job works for me.

I highly recommend this amp for anyone with a tight budget but a necessity for power.

Crutchfield rocks as always!

Amp is as amazing as
its been stated to
be. It brings out
the highs and mids
as well as a Kicker

would. The bridged,
4 ohm connection is
solid and able to
handle my 800 watt
(220 watt RMS)
subwoofer without
any problems.

Overall, its a great
amp for the price.
The only thing that
makes this amp a
little cheaper is
the fact that it is
only 4 ohm stable in
bridged mode.

I give it 5 stars
because its exactly
as advertised, and

Great Amp for a Great P rice

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I purchased this amp over a year ago and it still performs just like it did on
the first day that I installed it. Once this amp is set-up correctly it sounds
very clean and will push your speakers to the limits. I have this amp
bridged running a pair of 6 1/2" component speakers and
they sound terrific! Only issue is what everyone else has already stated,
and that is that the gain controls are a tad bit difficult to use. With the amp
at this price you cannot go wrong though.

I also have the Profile Profile AP1000M running a single 10" XXL sub in a box tuned at 30 hz. This combination makes for a great
sounding system that gets loud.

Would I reccomend purchasing an amp from Profile? Absolutely!

More Than Enough

Written By Calvin, Largo, MD on Sunday, March 02, 2008

This amp is dollar for dollar a good buy. It pumps a whole lot of power for such an reasonable price. The bass and treble boost are wonderful, but you probably won't need them. This amp puts it out there. The only gripe that I have is the level adjusters aren't marked. So if you have to re-adjust you're levels at anytime for any reason, it won't be an easy task.

Boom for the buck!!

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

My son and I installed this little powerhouse in his '01 Malibu. First-time either of us had done anything like this. It was fairly easy to install with a couple of calls to Crutchfields world class tech support team to confirm some of our assumptions. We've got it powering 6x9 3-ways in the rear deck on Ch 1&2 and Ch 3&4 bridged to a 12" Kicker sub. It provides plenty of punch to the sub and great mids and highs on the 3-ways. As others have said, there are some quirks like the gain and boost posts being a challenge to get to and adjust, but for the price I don't think you can beat the sound. Plus, Crutchfield gets you a 3 year warranty on the product. My son loves it and is very happy with the performance that he's getting out of this "value" priced amp.

Good Amp for the price

Written By pjk, Basehor, KS on Friday, October 12, 2007

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

If your price conscience then the AP1040 is a good option.

The Good:
The allen wrench connectors are very easy to use. No need for crimping / sodering connectors onto the end of the wires. Just slide in and screw down - easy.
Clean power. I'm drivng Polk db6501's with the front channels and an 8 inch (4 Ohm) isobaric sub in bridged mode with the rear channels. The amp delivers clean, distortion free sound without a lot of heat generation.
At 2 inches tall it's one of the slimmest amps allowing for tight installs. Mine fit under the passanger seat in an '06 mini. If your a Mini owner the HA1040 will not fit due to it's lenght.

The Bad:
The gain and high/low pass adjustments are small adjustment screws that don't line up well with the holes in the outer plate. This makes adjustments difficult, especially if you don't have line of site to the front of the amp. The polished finish of the amp does not help here. The finish acts like a mirror making the small text indicating the settings very difficult to read.

Great Power for the Buck

Written By Meade, Powhatan, VA on Wednesday, August 15, 2007

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Others have raved about this amp enough that I don't need to echo those feelings here. The bottom line is that this amp is very clean looking, caries all the same ratings, and certifications as more expensive amps and does so in an affordable package.
My only (very minor) complaint is that the gain dials are difficult to get to and require a screwdriver.
I have this amp powering my two front 6 1/2 components and the rear two channels bridged to drive my 4 Ohm 10" sub with a very respectable 225 watts.

Can't go wrong with this amp!

Written By Michael, Frenchtown, NJ on Sunday, August 12, 2007

OK I’m not an expert, but I am an electrical engineer and I know my way around car audio. I have built a dozen or so systems to date and I must say you can’t go wrong with this amp. If you are on a budget and needing to power some 100 watt RMS speakers, this amp is an excellent choice. I am driving Polk db5250 components up front and Infinity 9602i in back. My music is crystal clear!!

Good amp

Written By Anonymous, Rhode Island on Friday, July 27, 2007

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This amp sounds good and has two individual sets of adjustment knobs for front and rear, gain, bass, treble and a 3 way switch that isolates the sound for each side, bass only, full sound, or leads. I am using Boston 6.5 door speakers and a MTX speaker box with 8" bass & 3" tweeters. The sound is clean and plenty loud enough. I am happy with this amp. I would recommend it as a good buy for the money.

Rock the Boat!

Written By Jason, Somewhere In Indiana on Monday, May 21, 2007

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I purchased this amp to go in to my 21" boat. And yes, I know its not a marnie rated amp. I told the guys at here what my intentions were and they said no problem. Its not in a place where rain is going to get to it. Your covered by a 3 years wrtny. I shopped around, and I found for the money this to be the best deal. I read the reviews pos and cons. And I have to say this thing rocks! I have 4 Polks db690's hooked to it. And have fantastic sound. They dont boom. But they fill in the sound very nice and are extremly loud! Which is what I was looking for. Every thing hooked up great to my Marine Clarion head unit. So, Im pushing the 4 polks with the profile amp, four 4x6 from my factory head unit and a Kenwood marine sub & amp, 200watts. Let me tell you you would think I dropped a couple grand into this boat to get the sound. No matter where you are, it crystal clear and super loud with the profile amp and polk speakers. The sub fills in the sound rather nice. You can fell and hear the bass no matter where your sitting in or out of the boat. I could not be more pleased with the outcome. And for a 1st timer, it was super easy too hook up. Directions were clear as a bell. I dont think for the money and the backing of the product you can go wrong. I just could not be more pleased.

solid sound, great value

Written By t_quirk, Detroit, MI on Saturday, May 12, 2007

I am a first-time installer and took my time to do this job as best I could. This baby powers my Pioneer 4-ways (using 150hz bass blockers and the high-pass filter on the amp) for crystal clear highs and mids up front. It provides plenty of punch and power to my polk db690's on the rear deck, too, for great overall sound. It was fairly easy to figure out how to adjust the amp to the acoustics I wanted. My speakers have "come to life" as I've heard others say about this bad boy. For the price I don't think you can beat the sound. And it does fit nicely under the passenger seat of my honda civic, completely concealed as long as the seat isn't all the way forward. The 2" height came in handy there. Overall I am quite satisfied with this setup and the help I received from Crutchfield both over the phone and with the instructions they sent. Kudos, Crutchfield! My little car has a nice, big sound...

Awesome Amp

Written By Socrates, Vernon Hills, Il on Friday, April 27, 2007

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Great sound, amp and excellent hardware. The only complaint I have is that I might have bought too big of an amp. It is super loud and clear. Luckily, I have the luxury of making adjustments (bass, treble, gain, etc.)which I plan to play with, as soon as my kids let me. The amp is driving a 10" Bandpass and a two sets of Infinity component speakers w/ a factory radio. Profile provides the hardwire-to-RCA converters to wire in the factory receiver. My PeeVee is rock'n.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Great Amp. Do not be fooled by the price and brand names on other amps. This is quality and performance packaged nicely together. The controls and power out put are worth the small price of this amp in comparison to others. I have it pushing two sony 6x9's and 2 6.5's in a 03' Ram Quad Cab, and it brought my speakers to life. Adjustments are easy. No issues at all, but with Crutchfield support and a 3 YEAR WARRANTY, why would you spend more on anything else. It is worth the investment.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This is not my first time setting up an amp, but it is the first time setting up an amp for the main speakers, and not just a sub. When i went into this, i was very new to using anything but factory speakers hooked up to a head unit. But being unsatisfied with this, i looked for more. Then i found this guy. It's really a great amp, good power, sound quality, and it looks good, too. I wasn't sure what to expect when i finally got the system up and running, but let me tell you, i was not disappointed. This has got to be the loudest system I've ever heard. It makes a big difference to use component speakers, as they have higher power handling and overall better sound quality. My head units max volume is 50, and to listen higher than 18 really makes my ears hurt. Without any distortion, either. If your willing to run some extra wire, and put the time into it, this is a fantastic amp at a really good price.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The wattage is overstated but that's typical, I would say around half what is stated. What it pushes is nice clean power though, when used with some basic filters there is no engine noise at all. I got this with a single audiobahn 200x1 with 2 8'rockford punch 1 and 4 kenwood 6"1/2 exchelon and it sounds better than my kicker system which cost me almost 3 times as much. I got a kenwood 5302 along with forementioned items along with some baffles and amp kit, all of it was around 700 total. I did the install myself after paying a shop almost 200 to do a so- so job, I had to go back and clean up the wiring last time, custom box for subs and amps took about 5hours, installed all in car in about 4 hours, everbody that has seen and heard says looks like a pro did it. I also know it was done right and with all the diagrams Crutchfields provides it was a breeze, I will never pay for another install. For the money it sounds a good as my kicker that was over 600. Now the question is what to spend the 450 difference on.

Not exactly 1000 watts, but nice, clean and useful!

Written By Dave, California on Wednesday, December 27, 2006

I'm sure at 1KHz, bridged, peak power and 10% distortion ratings it puts out 1000 watts on the test bench which is why Profile can label it as a 1000 watt amp.

In reality what it *does* do is push a set of four 6.5" Polks very nicely. It's clean, free of engine noise when installed properly, and plays plenty loud when crossed over correctly and used with a sub system. And it looks sweet to boot!

This amp clearly falls into the "big bang for the buck" catagory and is definitely recommended.

The first amp I received had a bad channel and had to be returned. Crutchfield had a new one out to me in two days (even with the holiday mailing rush). This is why Cruthfield is the best way to shop...CUSTOMER SERVICE.
After plugging my new amp in, I am very impressed with the power provided. I am using this amp on 6.75" polk components in the front and polk 6x9's in the rear. Very loud and somewhat clean (the only time I notice a slight noise is between tracks on CDs). But I am very hard to please and for the money, you cannot beat this amp.

Inexpensive, clean, but not very dynamic

Written By Richard, Tampa Bay, FL on Tuesday, October 10, 2006

I bought this amp to power four speakers: two 6 1/2" Kenwoods up front and two 6x9 Alpines in the back. This amp has better stats (THD, S/N ratio, and price per watt) than other amps that Crutchfield offers.

The box came with all of the info you need to properly hook up the amp. Combined with one of the amp wiring kits that Crutchfield offers, installation was easy and without any problems.

The amp sounds clean and for low power applications is acceptable. However, the sound is not very dynamic and I would be surprised if the power output is really 80w RMS per channel across 20-20k hz. I had greater hopes for this amp, but based on the price, I should have known better.

Bottom line: clean sound, though seemingly under-powered. If you need a good, but cheap, amp then give this one consideration. More money, though, will get you a more dynamic sounding amp.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Ok, i bought this Amp for Christmas to power a pair of Polk Momo MM6500 components in the front ( 125 RMS constant power handling) and a pair of Inifinity Kappa 693.5i's in the rear deck (110 RMS constant power handling). So i have some speakers in my car that are meant to take a lot of wattage and i wanted an Amp that would supply them with about 70-80% of their RMS ratings. I had allready owned a Profile AMP for a few years prior to making this purchase, so i knew that Profile put out dependable products. This may not have all the bells and whistles of the Alpine/Inifinity/Polk Momo Amplifiers (digital onboard displays, tuning options etc. ) ... But IT puts out all the power you'll ever need and then some. (If you actually take the time to tune it correctly by hand you don't need any of those bells and whistles anyway). I'm getting no distortion in my system at the kind of power that will make you go deaf inside the car as well as make anyone in the nearby vicinity partially deaf! Darn good amp! a lot of power production for a lot less than you'll pay for other brand name amplifiers. The picture crutchfield offers doesn't do this amp justice .. it has a very nice chromed out look to it. Be warned that this IS NOT a small amp though.. it is bigger than i thought it would be (think about the size and look of the infinity amplifiers out there today ... except even more chromed out and 1/3 of the price) .... darn good product and i really can't think of any complaints about it other than its size (which is really just nitpicking). It really is a beautiful AMP though, Profile amps have come a long way in that respect.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

i bought this amp before xmas and have enjoyed it ever since. It sounds loud clean and crisp, I run this amp on 4 infinity kappas and it pumps a lot of sound out. I have peoples heads turning and asking what I run and when I tell them the price they are shocked.

Amp has very sensitive remote turn on switch but all worth it for the price.

Amp was so good I purchased there 500 watt mono amp.

Great product. I am currently using it in my Chevy Colorado to power a set of component speakers and a set of 2 way speakers. I little too strong for these, however it gives me the option of upgrading later. My only issue is that it has been a little too complicated to fine tune the crossover settings as my HU has similar settings itself. Other than that it is a good amp.

Why pay more when this amp has all the features and then some. This amp is perfect and it sounds tight.
I am using it to power 2 sets of components and they are loud and clear.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

AWESOME!!! I use it for my mid-range speakers and tweeters. The perfect amp for a great price. Most name brand companies sell amps on average about $1.00 per watt, so if you think about it, this amp puts out 225watts x 2 @ 4ohms(RMS). Like I said, AWESOME!!!

Inputs and Outputs Notes

Warranty Note

Power Strip: This Profile California AP1040 amplifier features a bright red power light strip on the top center of the unit to indicate when the amp is turned on. The 4-3/4" power light strip consists of six LEDs. The green LED on the power/speaker terminal side of the amplifier will also light when power is sent to the amp.

High-to-Low Level Converters: The amp is equipped with two external high (speaker) level to low (line) level converters to allow you to connect the amplifier to a receiver or factory radio without RCA preamp outputs or with only one pair of preouts. After splicing the receiver's speaker wires to the converter's speaker wires, you can simply plug the converter into the amp's RCA preamp input.

Line Outputs: The AP1040 includes a pair of RCA line outputs for sending an unfiltered signal to another amplifier or component without splitting the signal. Note: The line outputs pass through the signal from channels 3 and 4.

Protection Circuits: This amp has three types of protection circuits: DC offset, short circuit and thermal protection. The red LED on the left side of the amplifier will light to indicate that the amplifier has gone into protection.

Built-In Crossovers: This amplifier includes built-in variable low pass and high-pass filters, one for the front channels (1 & 2) and one for the rear channels (3 & 4), each with a slope of 12dB/octave. The low-pass filters are continuously variable from 50-250Hz, while the high-pass filters are continuously variable from 80Hz to 1.2kHz. Each pair of channels has a three-way switch which lets you choose between low-pass, high-pass, or full-range operation.

Bass/Treble Boost: The rear channels have a bass boost circuit, variable from 0 to 12dB at 45 Hz. The front channels have a treble boost circuit, variable from 0 to 12dB at 8kHz.

Inputs and Outputs Notes

Gold-plated Terminals: The AP1040 features gold-plated speaker and power terminals and RCA jacks for maximum signal transfer and corrosion resistance.

Set Screw Terminals: The power and ground connections feature set-screw terminals that can accept up to 4-gauge bare wire. The remote turn-on and speaker output set-screw terminals can accept up to 6-gauge bare wire. Two Allen wrenches (2.5mm and 3mm) are supplied to tighten/loosen the set screws.

Remote Turn-on: In addition to turning on and turning off the amplifier via the head unit's remote output, the remote turn-on also operates the reset circuit for the amplifier's protection system. The remote turn-on lead must be connected to the head unit in order to reset the protection circuits.

Warranty Note

Warranty: The manual indicates a 1-year parts and labor warranty, however Profile has extended the warranty to three years parts and labor for units purchased from Crutchfield.
