Our take on the Profile AP2000

Give your sound system some West Coast style with a California Series amplifier from Profile. These brushed aluminum and chrome beauties look expensive, so you may not believe your eyes when you check the price! You get high-end features like gold-plated outputs, a brushed aluminum case, variable filters, and a 3-year warranty — for less than you might expect.

High-powered bass response doesn't have to cost a lot of money, especially when you fire up your system with the AP2000. It's an affordable solution if you're looking to add a subwoofer (or two) to fill out your existing system. The adjustable bass boost lets you dial in some serious low end punch, and the variable low-pass filter let you contour the sound to match your vehicle. And, thanks to the variable subsonic filter, your sound will never get muddied up trying to reproduce low frequencies that your speakers can't handle.

Features

Power Strip: This Profile California AP2000 amplifier features a bright red power light strip on the top center of the unit to indicate when the amp is turned on. The 6-5/16" power light strip consists of eight LEDs. The green LED on the power/speaker terminal side of the amplifier will also light when power is sent to the amp.

Dual MOSFET Power Supplies: The amplifier features dual MOSFET power supplies for a more stable output.

Bass Level Remote Control: This amp is equipped with a wired remote control which allows you to adjust the level of the amplifier. The remote is designed to be mounted under the dash to allow control from the driver's seat. Dimensions: Width=1.585" (2.566" including mounting tabs), Height=0.75", Depth=1.368" (1.758" including knob), Cable length=16.25'.

High-to-Low Level Converter: The amp is equipped with an external high (speaker) level to low (line) level converter to allow you to connect the amplifier to a receiver or factory radio without RCA preamp outputs. After splicing the receiver's speaker wires to the converter's speaker wires, you can simply plug the converter into the amp's RCA preamp input.

Line Outputs: The AP2000 includes a pair of RCA line outputs for sending an unfiltered signal to another amplifier or component without splitting the signal.

Protection Circuits: This amp has three types of protection circuits: DC offset, short circuit and thermal protection. The red LED on the left side of the amplifier will light to indicate that the amplifier has gone into protection.

Built-In Crossover: This amplifier includes a built-in variable low pass filter with a slope of 12dB/octave. The low pass filter is continuously variable from 50-250Hz. There is a two-way switch which lets you choose between low-pass or full-range operation.

Subsonic Filter: The AP2000 features a built-in variable subsonic filter with a slope of 12dB/octave. The subsonic filter is continuously variable between 20-50Hz. This filter avoids the reproduction of inaudible low frequencies which could damage subwoofers because they can generate over-excursion of the subwoofer cone. Note: The subsonic filter cannot be turned off; it is always active.

Inputs and Outputs Notes

Gold-plated Terminals: The AP2000 features gold-plated speaker and power terminals and RCA jacks for maximum signal transfer and corrosion resistance.

Set Screw Terminals: The power and ground connections feature set-screw terminals that can accept up to 4-gauge bare wire. The remote turn-on and speaker output set-screw terminals can accept up to 6-gauge bare wire. Two Allen wrenches (2.5mm and 3mm) are supplied to tighten/loosen the set screws.

Remote Turn-on: In addition to turning on and turning off the amplifier via the head unit's remote output, the remote turn-on also operates the reset circuit for the amplifier's protection system. The remote turn-on lead must be connected to the head unit in order to reset the protection circuits.

Bass Remote: The amp has a female RJ-11 phone jack for plugging in the Bass Level Remote Control cable.

Wiring Recommendations

Wiring Recommendations: The AP2000 is equipped with four 25-amp fuses, so its fuse rating (100-amps total) exceeds that of typical 4 gauge wiring kits, which tend to include a 60-amp fuse. For 100-amp fuse protection, an ANL wafer style fuse is required, but none of the 4-gauge wiring kits include a ANL-style fuse holder. Since pre-packaged amplifier wiring kits cannot be used alone, you may purchase all the necessary items separately, or you may use a pre-packaged 4 gauge wiring kit along with a ANL-style fuse holder and a 100-amp ANL wafer fuse. If you do not use a wiring kit with the necessary additional items, the separate parts and wiring needed to install this amplifier are as follows:

  • 1 ANL wafer-style fuse holder capable of accepting 4 gauge wire
  • One 100-amp ANL wafer fuse
  • 2 power rings for 4 gauge cable
  • 4 gauge power cable (to connect the battery to a fuse holder and the fuse holder to the amplifier)
  • 4 gauge ground cable
  • Remote turn-on cable (speaker wire can be used as remote turn-on cable)
  • 1 stereo RCA patch cables (if needed)
  • Speaker wire

Warranty Note

Warranty: The manual indicates a 1-year parts and labor warranty, however Profile has extended the warranty to three years parts and labor for units purchased from Crutchfield.

surpised and amazed lovely

Written By Rob, ATL on Wednesday, December 03, 2008

I bought this amp right at 5 years ago. During that time I have had a nice variety of different subs, but always the same amp. I have had anything from two Polk DB12's in a vented box to two Kicker Comp 15's to two mix matched 10's. As where I am now I have two 12's and they hit like there is no tomorrow. I used to hang out in the morning before school having fun with the other kids as they took turns blowing the speakers they brought that morning with this amp. Anything from random tweeters to regular door speakers. In fact as i remember there used to be a kid who had 2 Audiobahn 12's and he bragged till he hooked them to this amp. He took the subs out after they smoked and had to send them back to get new ones because my amp blew them. I would recommend this amp to anyone who wants any kind of power to anything from subs to any other speaker. This amp will impress you with its looks and its quality of sound and power. This one shocked me when I bought it and hasn't let me down yet!.

Suprising-Impressed

Written By Erik, East Lansing, MI on Thursday, November 27, 2008

I bought this amp to push two RF P3D412's, I was skeptical because of the low price and claim to output 480x2@two ohm's, which I planned on running. But I figured with the extended warranty from crutchfield it would work until I could afford a RF P1000-1bd. I have to say that I am impressed, the amp is HUGE (2'x1'), but sounds good and drops hard. Low end is solid, but watch the base boost, it will clip it you turn it all the way up. The blue LED on the remote is also slightly annoying as its bright enough to read with. Sub sonic filter is a nice touch, adds a little piece of mind knowing you won't tear a spider when something sub 20Hz finds it way onto a track. Overall savage bass for a great price, I'd highly recommend this amp, If you're contemplating go for it; I'll still swap it out for the P1000-1bd, but thats only brand preference.

Profile AP2000

Written By Lisa, Osceola, WI on Monday, November 10, 2008

Boy oh boy. This amp is great. Usually i only buy Rockford Fosgate but i
went out on a limb and bought something that wasnt. I was actually
nervous because i didnt want to go through the hassle of buying an amp
and blowing it up or it burning up or something like that but the amp is
seriously really nice. I would recommend this amp to anybody.

She Bang, She Bang!

Written By turtdigg, Hilton, NY on Tuesday, July 01, 2008

Let me start out
with a couple of
quetions..

Why do you think
this amp and other
amps from Profile
are designed "bigger
than the normal amp
for that power
rating"?

Why do you think
higher end audio
amplifiers are
bigger in size for
less watts?

Hmm.. these thoughts
are going through my
mind.
Hey watts are watts
right? WRONG!

The cheap-o amps
that are being sold
every day on the
onine garage sale
are puming out nowhere
near what their
power rating is! Not
to mention that if
you play it for
extended periods of
time,- its gonna
melt.

Profile may not be
the best name in
high end car audio,
but when it comes to
quality amps, you
just cant beat it.
When they say 960
RMS watts x 1 in
bridged mode, thats
exactly what they
mean. And by the
way, these amps will
hit for hours upon
hours, and never
overheat!

As for the size
difference here..
well.. what can I
say bigger IS
better! And thats
what y'all can tell
the ladies when they
ask why its so big..
Take it from me
these amps are built
efficiently, and
they arent just
taking up space.

5 Stars on this one.

Great performance at an affordable price

Written By Eaton, Dallas, TX on Tuesday, June 24, 2008

I bought this amp about a year ago, and I couldn't be happier; it has
performed flawlessly. The amp is powering two Infinity Kappa Perfect 10"
subs (320x2 @ 4-ohms); it has never failed to perform. Bottom line, this
amp performs as described, and you can't beat it for the price!

I got this amp on a 15 inch HX2 @ 4 ohms per coil it sounds great I love the
bang for the buck. I have had over 60 systems in my cars since I like to see
which will make my brain rattle the best and this one has really helped me
with that I think this is a keeper for the little geo my girlfriend drives. I love
getting in and hearing the car rattle to pieces. I really
recommend is if you have the right speakers for it.

great amp for the price

Written By Nate B, Truman, MN on Saturday, April 05, 2008

I have this amp hooked up to 2 rockford p3d412 in a ported box. If you need to find loose part in your vehicle this amp will find it for you. The remote is nice just would be better if the blue led wasn't so bright other than that it was a good buy, couldn't be happier with it.

Nice Amp

Written By Gabriel, Chicago on Tuesday, March 25, 2008

This is a nice amp for the money. I have two Kenwood KFC-W3011's on this amp and they sound good! The subs are 400 rms and this thing only puts out 320 and it still sounds great. I would give it a 5 stars but the first amp I had was disfunctional and eventually went out...and took one of my speakers with it. I told crutchfield and they sent me a new one and a new speaker immediately. And I was playing my music pretty loud for about an hour and a half once and the thing overheated. It came back on in a few minutes but once I stopped and touched it. OMG!! It was HOT!!! I think had I kept driving it would have overheated again.

But if you don't usually take long road trips this is a great amp!

Lots of power lots of fun

Written By stockrj, Clarkston, MI on Monday, January 28, 2008

After purchasing two 15 D's i decided to switch from a small but amazing rockford fosgate 350s to this mammoth. When i first got this amp i noticed its rediculous size and weight (24x11x3 and 18 pounds). Next i installed it on top of my custom box due to the fact that this was the only place it fit. Just to get an idea of the power, my driveways sixty feet long and my truck is parked in front of the garage and my van at the other end of the driveway. with this amp only turned half way up i can get cell phone to do a little dance on the vans engine cover from forty feet away. And this AINT NO JOKE. Betwen my fifteens which still arent being pushed that hard and this amp i cant see straight half the time. I would recomend this amp to any one thats looking for big power but are on a budget.
