Our take on the Profile AP400

Give your sound system some West Coast style with a California Series amplifier from Profile. These brushed aluminum and chrome beauties look expensive, so you may not believe your eyes when you check the price. And, you get high-end features like gold-plated outputs, a brushed aluminum case, variable filters, and a 3-year warranty — for less than you might expect.

Whether you're looking to amplify a subwoofer or the speakers in your system, the AP400 is an affordable solution — and the included speaker-level input adapter makes it easy to connect to any setup. The adjustable bass boost lets you dial in some serious low end punch, and the variable high- and low-pass filters let you contour the sound to match your speaker setup and your vehicle.

Features

Power Strip: This Profile California AP400 amplifier features a bright red power light strip on the top center of the unit to indicate when the amp is turned on. The 2-3/8" power light strip consists of three LEDs. The green LED on the power/speaker terminal side of the amplifier will also light when power is sent to the amp.

High-to-Low Level Converter: The amp is equipped with an external high (speaker) level to low (line) level converter to allow you to connect the amplifier to a receiver or factory radio without RCA preamp outputs. After splicing the receiver's speaker wires to the converter's speaker wires, you can simply plug the converter into the amp's RCA preamp input.

Line Outputs: The AP400 includes a pair of RCA line outputs for sending an unfiltered signal to another amplifier or component without splitting the signal.

Protection Circuits: This amp has three types of protection circuits: DC offset, short circuit and thermal protection. The red LED on the left side of the amplifier will light to indicate that the amplifier has gone into protection.

Built-In Crossover: This amplifier includes built-in variable high pass and low pass filters, each with a slope of 12dB/octave. The low pass filter is continuously variable from 50-250Hz, while the high-pass filter is continuously variable from 80Hz-1.2kHz. You can configure the amp for low-pass, full range, or high-pass operation with the 3-way switch.

Inputs and Outputs Notes

Gold-plated Terminals: The AP400 features gold-plated speaker and power terminals and RCA jacks for maximum signal transfer and corrosion resistance.

Set Screw Terminals: The power, ground, remote turn-on, and speaker output connections feature set-screw terminals that can accept up to 6-gauge bare wire. A 2.5mm Allen wrench is supplied to tighten/loosen the set screws.

Remote Turn-on: In addition to turning on and turning off the amplifier via the head unit's remote output, the remote turn-on also operates the reset circuit for the amplifier's protection system. The remote turn-on lead must be connected to the head unit in order to reset the protection circuits.

Warranty Note

Warranty: The manual indicates a 1-year parts and labor warranty, however Profile has extended the warranty to three years parts and labor for units purchased from Crutchfield.

Just right for the job

Written By , Charlotte, NC on Friday, January 22, 2010

Bought this to upgrade the sub in my wife's lexus SC430. I had tight size specs to work
with and this amp fit perfectly.

The amp went in without a hitch and the gain and filters ets. allowed me to tune it just
right for the car.

The amp does a great job and I would not hesitate buying Profile amps again!

Definitely the "sleeper" in the value amp category

Written By mikey, Westchester, NY on Thursday, October 29, 2009

I have two of these amplifiers in my Pontiac convertible: one driving front Infinity Reference series components and the other powering a 10" dual voice coil sub in a custom acoustic suspension enclosure in the trunk. Running in two channel mode, each these amps has plenty of headroom (I'm not an asphalt shaker so I don't crank them). As others have mentioned, they produce very clean sound and yes, they can get a wee bit warm (I've never found either too hot to touch, perhaps again because I'm not pushing them to their limits).

I'll be curious to see if these hold up as well as the now almost 20 year old Crutchfield Performance Series CR2X30P amp I have driving the rear Infinity three ways in my car. Those long out of production heavy duty amps with military grade circuit boards -- which Crutchfield marketed for a few years back in the early 90s -- are the Energizer Bunny of car audio: they NEVER stop running!

Very Nice

Written By jeff, Conover, Nc on Monday, February 16, 2009

Bought 2 of these, One for a 2005 Ranger Pickup and a 2007 Ford Focus
both vehicles using all the factory speakers and a sony cdx-gt63oui head unit.
I installed the focus today with a 10inch polk mm2104 sounds very good, more than enough power to push it even being underpowered a little.
Very nice looking amp, came with a high level to rca adapter but i didn't use it so i can't comment on it.
These are in my parents vehicles.
I have Alpine and Infinity in my jeep right now, and have used Rockford and I Am very Impressed so far with the sound versus the price!
It hasn't even got warm to the touch after riding around for an hour, listening at normal volumes.
Big plus the 3 year warranty.
Next time I need an amp I think I will go with Profile.
Only time will tell of the longevity of them, but for now I am totally satisfied!
Crutchfield Rules!
Enjoy,
Jeff

Profile AP400

Written By Ronald, Hurricane, WV on Tuesday, January 27, 2009

This pretty amp combined with the 8 inch Polk Momo rocks!! It has a TON of features for the price! It has a red light in the middle of the amp that lights up, which I didn't know it had, but its cool. The line converter that came with it works really good. It tends to get a little hot, but it has always done a good job for me. I would recommend this amp to anyone adding a subwoofer to their system.

Great amp for cheap price

Written By Juggernaut1228, Biloxi, Ms on Thursday, January 15, 2009

Picked up this amp and a Blaupunkt 12" bass canon at the same time. I
have the amp bridged running the sub and the two together sound good.
More than what I need in my silverado.

Crisp Clean sound

Written By Charlie, Woodbridge, VA on Thursday, October 16, 2008

So I got this pushing Infinity Reference 6020CS OMG The sound that comes out it great I was alittle reserved about buying this amp due to pricing and name but I would recommend to anyone.

Only reason it got 4 stars was it does not have a active fan so I had to buy a fan assembly

Excellent Amp

Written By Jared, Johnson City, TN on Monday, October 13, 2008

This is a great amp. I have it pushing a Pioneer 10" in an enclosed box, and it sounds terrific. The only bad things about it are that it gets very hot and if you have a 2 ohm sub, you can't bridge it safely. Overall great if using for a single small sub, or two speakers.

Profile AP400

Written By texastechguy, Houston Tx on Sunday, October 05, 2008

I have had profile before, so its not dought i love profile, their durability, performance, output and of course their price..

This amp is nothing more than the eirlier CA200 Profile did what most companies do and started using "max power rating" to brand their products, unlike older models..

This is a great amp to power 1 pair of speakers.. But if you have 2 pair.. get a bigger amp.. Like the CA400 will work great.. But if your only planning on running 1 pair.. this is a great amp for it..
