My system has plenty of power. Who needs an amp?

You might think you don't need an amp because you have a 400-watt system in your car, or because your new stereo puts out 50 watts a channel. But those are peak wattage ratings, which may boil down to 15 or 20 watts per channel, using the more realistic RMS rating. An amp sends your speakers the power they need to deliver your music with clarity and impact, whether you're using factory speakers or high-performance components. And low-frequency reproduction requires lots of power, so an amp is an absolute must if you're adding a sub to your system.

Just right for the job

Written By Anonymous, Charlotte, NC on Friday, January 22, 2010

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Bought this to upgrade the sub in my wife's lexus SC430. I had tight size specs to work
with and this amp fit perfectly.

The amp went in without a hitch and the gain and filters ets. allowed me to tune it just
right for the car.

The amp does a great job and I would not hesitate buying Profile amps again!

Definitely the "sleeper" in the value amp category

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I have two of these amplifiers in my Pontiac convertible: one driving front Infinity Reference series components and the other powering a 10" dual voice coil sub in a custom acoustic suspension enclosure in the trunk. Running in two channel mode, each these amps has plenty of headroom (I'm not an asphalt shaker so I don't crank them). As others have mentioned, they produce very clean sound and yes, they can get a wee bit warm (I've never found either too hot to touch, perhaps again because I'm not pushing them to their limits).

I'll be curious to see if these hold up as well as the now almost 20 year old Crutchfield Performance Series CR2X30P amp I have driving the rear Infinity three ways in my car. Those long out of production heavy duty amps with military grade circuit boards -- which Crutchfield marketed for a few years back in the early 90s -- are the Energizer Bunny of car audio: they NEVER stop running!

Very Nice

Written By jeff, Conover, Nc on Monday, February 16, 2009

Bought 2 of these, One for a 2005 Ranger Pickup and a 2007 Ford Focus
both vehicles using all the factory speakers and a sony cdx-gt63oui head unit.
I installed the focus today with a 10inch polk mm2104 sounds very good, more than enough power to push it even being underpowered a little.
Very nice looking amp, came with a high level to rca adapter but i didn't use it so i can't comment on it.
These are in my parents vehicles.
I have Alpine and Infinity in my jeep right now, and have used Rockford and I Am very Impressed so far with the sound versus the price!
It hasn't even got warm to the touch after riding around for an hour, listening at normal volumes.
Big plus the 3 year warranty.
Next time I need an amp I think I will go with Profile.
Only time will tell of the longevity of them, but for now I am totally satisfied!

This pretty amp combined with the 8 inch Polk Momo rocks!! It has a TON of features for the price! It has a red light in the middle of the amp that lights up, which I didn't know it had, but its cool. The line converter that came with it works really good. It tends to get a little hot, but it has always done a good job for me. I would recommend this amp to anyone adding a subwoofer to their system.

Picked up this amp and a Blaupunkt 12" bass canon at the same time. I
have the amp bridged running the sub and the two together sound good.
More than what I need in my silverado.

So I got this pushing Infinity Reference 6020CS OMG The sound that comes out it great I was alittle reserved about buying this amp due to pricing and name but I would recommend to anyone.

Only reason it got 4 stars was it does not have a active fan so I had to buy a fan assembly

This is a great amp. I have it pushing a Pioneer 10" in an enclosed box, and it sounds terrific. The only bad things about it are that it gets very hot and if you have a 2 ohm sub, you can't bridge it safely. Overall great if using for a single small sub, or two speakers.

I have had profile before, so its not dought i love profile, their durability, performance, output and of course their price..

This amp is nothing more than the eirlier CA200 Profile did what most companies do and started using "max power rating" to brand their products, unlike older models..

This is a great amp to power 1 pair of speakers.. But if you have 2 pair.. get a bigger amp.. Like the CA400 will work great.. But if your only planning on running 1 pair.. this is a great amp for it..

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I liked this amp so much driving 2 5x7s in my Mustang that I bought one to drive a 10" MTX sub in my Monte Carlo. The small size helps me hid this amp on the front side of my sub box which I carpeted to match my trunk. From the rear, you can heardly see my sub box. I am not one who wants to thump the neighborhood, but this amp could probably do it well with 200 watts RMS bridged. With the input gain, bass boost amd hz cutout adjustments, I could tailor it to my liking. It took a few days of trial and error, but I finally got it right. It is hard to adjust in the garage with no road or engine noise to contrast against. Profile is definitely under rated!

i was a doubtful about this amp being that it cost only 80 dollars but the reviews were posiitive enough to try it out. i bridged the two front speakers to one channel and rears to the other (jbl power 6x9s and 6.5's) the amp gain is set at 1/2 way up for a 4volt pre-out from a kenwood excelon x-591(great receiver) crossover is set at full range and the bass boost is 3/4s up ,the head unit had to be set at 100hz crossover range to avoid distortion and i tell you i can turn the volume up to 33 out of 35 decibels and the sound is still crystal clear. the sound of this amp is incredible for what it cost....

This amp is powering my Infinity Kappas 60.7s @ 2 Ohms, this amp does the job perfectly. I'm getting every once of the 100 RMS to the Kappas.
I can't say that these are any better than the "Big Brands", but for the price, and since I can't justify dumping $300 or more on an amp, the AP400's are a perfect choice.

I used this thing at first bridged with a sub and it blew my Rockford Fosgate. So I connected it to four speakers and the left channel is loose and must be adjusted everytime I'm in the car. I mean when it works, it works well. But it only works a quarter of the time. You actually have to hold the cable at a certain angle to have music play on both channels.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

It's one of the cheapest amps you can get and it delivers big time. Along with a Pioneer sub, it really changes the way you listen to music. If you have a decent stereo that does a good job with the rest of the frequencies, this amp and a good sub fills in where the regular speakers can't go. One piece of advice if you like a bass with more "punch", that hits hard but it's not disproportionate with the rest of the music, set the gain to the maximum and the bass boost to the minimum or close to it, because the bass boost will boost the 50 Hz frequency and if you set it a bit too high sometimes the bass will almost make your windows shatter and be way too loud compared to the rest of the music. At least this is for a Pioneer stereo with pre outs, it may be different with other brands.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I bought this amp to power a 8" Rockford Fosgate stage 2 sub.

I have the gain set at about half way and the sound is very deep, loud, and clean. I haven't had any problems with it over heating as I've never had it at full gain.

The only reason that I gave it a 4 instead of a 5 is that the line output converter that came with it was worthless. It would cut in and out. About 30mins after I completed the install I bought an adjustable L.O.C. and it has worked flawlessly ever since.

Overall, this is a very good product for only $80 and I'm looking into getting another profile 4ch amp to power my cabin speakers.

PS: I have this in a Jeep Wrangler so if someone breaks in and steals it I'm only out $80 instead of $200 for the Alpine amp that I was looking at.

I use this Profile California 400 watt amp to power my single kicker Comp VR 8" subwoofer in my 2000 Chevy Metro. There is plenty of power for my sub which has up to 400 watt RMS running at 8 ohm. The amp is bridged in 4 ohm stable and runs the sub perfectly. I get excellent bass response, and I have never turned the amp all the way up. Lovin' It!

This is an awesome amp for the price and size. I have it hooked up to one 10" shallow mount Pioneer sub. It gives off the perfect amount of juice this sub needs. I would have given it a 5 star rating, but like others have said it does tend to get hot. But that shouldn't discourage you from buying this, because you amp shouldn't be located in a place where you might burn yourself on it. Overall, very good quality especially for the price.

Good Amp, Good price! However, cant handle much power!! Bought this amp to power a polk audio momo 8" and sounds great! The only drawback is that I have an Eclipse 5425 head unit that has 5V pre-outs. After about 30 minutes of music the amp gets too hot and begins to distort, just before shutting off! have been forced to buy a beefier amp! Recommend for lower powered head units or for powering your highs!

Nice amp for the price

Written By Hyacinthe Taillefer, Montreal, QC on Monday, June 12, 2006

First i will say that I am a moderated audiophile and i bought amp mostly to test my speakers while building my sound system.

I'm still using it on my 4" Infinity compoment system and so far I'm impressed. For the price, it got a really clean sound. I do noticed some distortion at high and moderated volume in the high frequencies. But most ppl won't notice. Crossovers are also doing a good job.

I used it for 2 weeks on a Profile 12" 125w RMS subwoofer and i don't recommend anyone to use that amp to drive subwoofers. It get so hot that i burned myself! It was shutting down every 45 mins (High temp. sensor works great). Sound quality was also affected after 15 mins running. Bass boost gave a nice punch to the sub.

I also used it on a Pair of 70w Phoenix Gold 6x9s. Mid-bass were great. Lack of mids compared to the head unit built-in amp.

So i would only recommend using it for small speakers in 4ohms load.

Inexpensive pimp your ride

Written By no, San Diego, CA on Monday, March 20, 2006

This a quick inexpensive way to pimp your ride. I like the input/output RCA jacks. Makes it easy to expand to a sub or additional amp. Sleek design hides nice, neat and out of sight under the passenger seat. Ideal for well balanced front and rear speakers that don't need FADE adjustments. Matches well with Alpine CDE-9843. Great for a beginner and gives you options to expand.

You will not be dissappointed with this amp. I have mine bridged to a Rockford Stage 2 8" sub. It provides flawless perormance. Another good feature of this amp is its size. It is small enough to fit neatly under the passenger seat in my Ford Ranger. It is very easy to adjust and tune to your prefrences. The key feature of this sub is the price. You will not find a better combination of performance and price than this amp. A+ product.

Does what I need it to do.

First I must say, this is my first profile amp (im use to the bigger power throwers) and I am impressed w/ this amp. For $80 and 200 watts at 4 ohms into my 8" rockford in my 89 toyo pickup it sounds Very Nice. It does however get a little toasty from time to time (full power) but woofer seems to be fine and amp as well. I have it hard mounted onto the back of the cab but so far so good.

Very nice product for the price. I'm not an audiophile, but I do like my stereo to produce crisp sound without being too loud. This little amp fit the bill perfectly. Inexpensive and more than enough power to produce the bass I was looking for in a pair of Boston Acoustic 6 1/2" speakers. Connections were easy and made even easier with the installation kit that I ordered with the amp. Also, adjustments on the amp are simple; easily fine tuned.

I gave this amp 5 stars because of its overall value and performance. I needed an amp to run a single sub in my winter 4x4, so I wasn't going to buy an expensive piece. I'm running it bridged to a JL 12 inch single voice coil sub in a sealed box. I'm using all monster cable including 8 gauge power. It's getting around 200 watts rms, and sounds real nice! The amp costs $80, and you can't find anything even close to that price point with the same output or the 3 year warranty. Value is the main selling point with this amp, and it works very well.

Great Amp!

Written By tankman67, Pittsburgh, PA on Tuesday, November 08, 2005

I was hesitant to buy this amp because of the low price. You get what you pay for right? The main reason I bought it was because of its small footprint. Space is very limited in my Jeep Wrangler. I have this bridged mono @4 ohms (200x1) into 1 12" sub and it sounds great! I was very impressed with the power this puts out. I thought I'd have to max the output just to get decent bass, but that just wasn't the case. I also had to mount this under the rear seat, and there's not much breathing room. I've cranked the tunes for an hour at a time and, although the amp is hot to the touch, has not distorted and has not over-heated (amp has built in thermal protection).
In summary: This is a great amp for the price if you're just looking to add a little extra bump to the buggy.

I bought this amp to replace my MTX Thunder311D powering a 10" MTX Thunder6000a sub. I hooked it up, and the Profile didn't have the punch of the MTX amp, which was rated at half the power that the Profile was! I can't say how it performs on speakers, but on my sub I wasn't too impressed. On the other hand, it is also half as cheap as the MTX amps, so if you're looking for an amp budget, this might be one to consider.

Power Strip: This Profile California AP400 amplifier features a bright red power light strip on the top center of the unit to indicate when the amp is turned on. The 2-3/8" power light strip consists of three LEDs. The green LED on the power/speaker terminal side of the amplifier will also light when power is sent to the amp.

High-to-Low Level Converter: The amp is equipped with an external high (speaker) level to low (line) level converter to allow you to connect the amplifier to a receiver or factory radio without RCA preamp outputs. After splicing the receiver's speaker wires to the converter's speaker wires, you can simply plug the converter into the amp's RCA preamp input.

Line Outputs: The AP400 includes a pair of RCA line outputs for sending an unfiltered signal to another amplifier or component without splitting the signal.

Protection Circuits: This amp has three types of protection circuits: DC offset, short circuit and thermal protection. The red LED on the left side of the amplifier will light to indicate that the amplifier has gone into protection.

Built-In Crossover: This amplifier includes built-in variable high pass and low pass filters, each with a slope of 12dB/octave. The low pass filter is continuously variable from 50-250Hz, while the high-pass filter is continuously variable from 80Hz-1.2kHz. You can configure the amp for low-pass, full range, or high-pass operation with the 3-way switch.

Inputs and Outputs Notes

Gold-plated Terminals: The AP400 features gold-plated speaker and power terminals and RCA jacks for maximum signal transfer and corrosion resistance.

Set Screw Terminals: The power, ground, remote turn-on, and speaker output connections feature set-screw terminals that can accept up to 6-gauge bare wire. A 2.5mm Allen wrench is supplied to tighten/loosen the set screws.

Remote Turn-on: In addition to turning on and turning off the amplifier via the head unit's remote output, the remote turn-on also operates the reset circuit for the amplifier's protection system. The remote turn-on lead must be connected to the head unit in order to reset the protection circuits.

Warranty Note

Warranty: The manual indicates a 1-year parts and labor warranty, however Profile has extended the warranty to three years parts and labor for units purchased from Crutchfield.
