About the Lightning Audio L-1500D

Buck Pomerantz

Harness the power of Lightning

Lightning Audio's L-1500D mono amplifier will hit your sub with up to 500 watts RMS, giving your music a solid bedrock of bass. This little amp packs its big wallop using Class D amp technology that allows it to be small enough — its footprint is smaller than a typical magazine — and run cool enough to fit almost anywhere in your vehicle. And it's 1-ohm stable, so you can add subs down the road without having to buy a new amp.

Versatile connections and control

This amp can take its input via RCA cables from an aftermarket receiver or from your vehicle's speaker wiring, so it can work with almost any vehicle's system. A low-pass filter sends the right frequencies to your sub while a fixed subsonic filter tames the extreme low end, so your sub and enclosure will sound their best. A variable bass boost adds some bottom to the mix when you need it, and Lightning Audio includes a wired remote that lets you control the level of bass from the front seat.

Product Research

Features

Overview: The Lightning Audio L-1500D is part of the LA series of amps are designed for moderately sized mobile audio systems. The L-1500D is a Class D mono amplifier that outputs 125 watts RMS at 4 ohms, 250 watts at 2 ohms, and 500 watts at 1 ohm. It comes with a wired Remote Level Control, high-level input harness, extra fuses, and mounting hardware.

Gain Control: The amplifier has a single gain control for matching the amp to the preamp output voltage of the connected head unit. The input sensitivity is variable from 150mV to 4V (low level) and 300mV to 8V (high level).

Remote Level Control: The supplied Remote Level Control lets you control the output of the amplifier from the dashboard or center console. The module measures 2-3/8"W x 1"H x 2-1/2" D, and includes mounting hardware and a 16-foot cable with 3.5mm plugs on both ends.

Low Pass Crossover: The L-1500D is equipped with a variable 50Hz - 250 Hz Butterworth low pass filter with a 12dB per octave slope. The crossover frequency control can be adjusted with a small screwdriver, and has markings at 50Hz, 75Hz, 100Hz, 175Hz, 225Hz, and 250Hz. The crossover sets the upper frequency limit of the amplifier output.

Subsonic Filter: In addition to the low pass filter, the L-1500D has a Subsonic Filter that controls the lower frequency limit of the amp's output. The Subsonic Filter's cutoff frequency is fixed at 25Hz, and has a slope of 24dB per octave.

Bass Boost: The L-1500D includes a variable bass boost control, which allows you to increase the bass response between 0dB and +12dB. The bass boost is centered at 45Hz.

Phase Control: The amp has a Phase switch that lets you change the phase of the speaker output. Out-of-phase speakers create mutually canceling frequencies that hurt the sound system's bass response. The Phase switch inverts the "attack" of the subwoofer from 0° to 180°, so you can see which setting sounds best.

Pass-Thru Outputs: The L-1500D has RCA pass-thru outputs for daisy-chaining another amplifier using the input signal from the source unit. This prevents the need from running an extra set of RCA cables from the front of the vehicle to the second amplifier.

Connections: The Lightning Audio L-1500D features nickel-plated screw-down terminals for power and speaker connections. The screws can be tightened/loosened with a slotted or Phillips screwdriver (not included). The amp terminals are as follows:

  • Power/Ground: The power and ground connections use screw terminals that are 1/2" wide, and accept up to 4-gauge wire. Based on the 50A fuse rating of the amplifier, an 8-gauge amplifier wiring kit is recommended. A 50A fuse should be placed on the power wire no more than 18" from the battery.
  • Fuse: The amplifier has two 25A ATO (blade-type) fuses installed. Two spare 25A fuses are included with the amp.
  • Remote Turn-on: The screw terminal for the remote turn-on lead is 0.33" wide. You can use 18-gauge or 16-gauge wire for the turn-on lead.
  • Speaker Terminals: Two pairs of screw terminals are provided, allowing you to connect two subwoofers to the amplifier. The amplifier is 1-ohm stable. The terminals are internally wired in parallel, allowing you to connect two 2-ohm subs or one sub with dual 2-ohm voice coils. The screw terminals for the speakers are 0.33" in diameter, allowing you to use up to 10-gauge speaker wire.
  • Line Level Input: One pair of stereo RCA jacks is provided for the input signal. These RCA jacks are mounted on the "control" side of the amplifier.
  • Pass-Thru Output: One pair of stereo RCA jacks is provided for daisy-chaining a second amplifier without running an extra set of RCA cables from the front of the vehicle. These RCA jacks are mounted on the "control" side of the amplifier.
  • High Level Input: A 4-pin Molex connector is provided for plugging in the supplied high level input harness. The harness allows you to connect a factory head unit, or an aftermarket stereo without RCA jacks. The source unit's speaker wires should be spliced to the high level input harness.
