Plus, hook up your SIRIUS or XM satellite radio tuner for expanded capabilities (subscription and antenna required).

Important Note: The powerful output of Alpine's V-Drive internal amplifier (CEA-2006 compliant) requires a direct fused connection to your vehicle's battery! We recommend that you purchase a 10-gauge amp wiring kit.

Why replace your factory radio?

Two good reasons - sound quality and cool features. A new car stereo offers power that's superior to most factory radios, along with more sophisticated tone controls. And most car stereos offer built-in or optional features that add safety and fun to life in your car, including inputs for your iPod or MP3 player, Bluetooth connectivity for hands-free cell phone calls, satellite radio or HD Radio reception, and connections for building an audio system in your car.

Best Head Unit

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I bought this head unit about three weeks ago and i was sceptical of putting it in myself. Even though i have done many. I did it just fine and turned out great. I have it hooked up to a Kicker Impulse amp and 2 12" Kicker Comp subs. Once i played with the head unit settings, the sound was unreal. The best quality ever. I could set the highs, mids, and lows of each individual speaker. Using the time correction and the crossover in the head unit, it is soo loud, clear, and bassy that i gets headaches from it now. Give it an A++++

Great Quality for Cheap!

There isn't much more that I can say that hasn't already been said. It sounds awesome and the display looks pretty good. It is difficult to use at first, but it becomes second nature quickly. I bought this to hook up an iPod and my Pod sounds great coming through this. There is no reason not to buy this.

1997 BMW Z3
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I just finished installing the unit in my '97 BMW Z3. The factory unit is also an Alpine but it does not have nearly the power, features, or performance of the 9833. I also purchased the AUX input cable for my Creative Zen Xtra MP3 player.

During the set-up and install I had tons of questions for the service guys at Crutchfield and each one was answered in a very knowledgable, patient and professional manner. Without those guys I would still be trying to install it!

The sound is incredible in comparison to the old one. The features, as others have stated, are pretty sophisticated but I am getting more knowledgable all the time. In particular, the Cross-Over and Time Correction features are taking some time to truly understand. In fact even the EQ feature is more complex than I'm used to as you need to shape the sound frequeny by frequency and I'm having difficult getting the real punchy bass and crisp highs I'm used to getting on other EQ enabled devices. I know I will get the hang of it after a few more calls to support though. The AUX input from my Creative seems to work well although without any intelligent pass-through device like the iPod all you get is a signal feed and no meta data (song, band, album name) or the capability to control the device through the head unit. But then again I only paid about $25 for the interface as opposed to about $100 for the iPod interface device. Now I'm thinking about swapping out the speakers and also thinking about getting another 9833 for my Mountaineer too!

I have to say this is the best head unit I have ever owned. Great features and very clean sound. It plays all my mp3 CD's without any problem and reads them very fast too. Highly recommend this unit and last but not least two thumbs up for Crutchfield.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

After much consideration, I finally decided to upgrade from my CDA-7863 to a current model with Sirius radio capabilities and iPod compatability. What really sealed the deal for me was the $150 price drop. All of Alpine's best features (minus the lcd display) for this price is unbeatable. I have been using my current deck for almost five years and it has yet to fail me. Alpine has definitely sold me on their quality to say the least. I find the 9833 pretty easy to navigate through since it is somewhat similar to my 7863. The new features such as iPersonalize and Media Expander add a whole new dimension of sound to my system. Since I only run an amp to my subs at the moment, it was important to me to retain the V-Drive internal amp to power my component speakers. That is one feature that kept me from buying a 2005 model since none of the new deck's appear to have that feature. In all, I highly recommend this unit to anyone who is looking for unbeatable value in car audio. Better get one before their gone.

Dude, this HU is freakin' awesome. It's the best price I've found for the 9833 anywhere on the net. If you are lookin' for some beat in your trunk (if u have subs) this is the head unit to get! The interface may not look so great, but the quality blows pioneer out the wall! My order processed and delivered in exactly 2 business days, great service. Thanks Crutchfield!

Alpine has always been the best Car Audio headunit by far. (I've installed hundreds over the years as a professional installer) The added price break and as always crystal clear sound is unbeatable. Go for the extra bucks and get the Sirius receiver. I'm new to it and it is awesome! EASY install and they even throw in the factory plugs. HIGHLY recommended.

Sounds Great, Alpine has done it again!

Written by: thomas from Baton Rouge, LA on March 7, 2005

This is a great unit, I can't believe it is going so cheap. The build quality is unheard of in this price range. This unit replaced my tired old Pioneer Premier. The difference is unbelievable. After running Nakamichi for a few years I got spoiled with the sound quality, and was never really happy w/ the pioneer. After seeing the price drop I jumped on this offer. Alpine still has'nt gotten the ergonomics quite right, but that is small price to pay for what you get in options and quality. The ability to turn off the internal amp was a big plus (amp = heat & heat = potential distortion). The iPersonalize function is great and cuts setup/tweaking time in half. Overall the best unit I've owned in years.

Alpine Has Done It Again

Written by: Clement from Mount Crawford, VA on March 7, 2005

I purchased this with all Infinity Perfect Speakers, subs and Mtx amps. This headunit is capable of controlling everything you want to put in your car. The EQ Settings on this headunit are out of this world, the X-over allows you to change (Highs,Mids, and Lows) aka (front speakers, rear speakers, and subwoofer frequencies). The controlls at first are hard to understand but once acheived sound is at its best when tuned correctly. If you are a SQ person this is the headunit for you.

A little redundant but.....

Much like every other review I've ever read about this deck I'd have to say it's one of the best bargains on the market. It sounds phenomenal with or without external amplification. The internal amp is sufficient to power most speakers except for subs of course.

Like others, I would have to say that the set-up can be tedious but with everything this deck can do there really isn't any way around a somewhat complex menu system. I use it with the optional iPod interface and once you can work within the limitations of the interface itself (ie the limitation in number of titles displayed per playlist) it is a great system that I would recommend for any iPod user looking to take there music on the road.

I've had other Alpine decks in the past and a lot of other brands and always keep coming back to Alpine for pure sound quality, they're almost unmatched at just about any level within their lineup. Anyone looking to pick up a new deck with a ton of features needs to consider this unit from Alpine, especially at the clearance price from Crutchfield. I work within the industry and am privy to some pretty nice accommodations and discounts and the price on this from Crutchfield was worth going outside of my company to get it. The bonus is Crutchfield's great customer service and tech-support. If you're shopping in this price range you should look no further.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I bought my CDA-9833 to replace an older Pioneer..and the difference is incredible. Im using the Alpine to run a pair of Diamond Audio M6 components up front, and M6 coaxials in the rear. And the 26RMS watts can make them scream! This head unit has so many options to tune your music and is great for an SQ setup like mine. The installation is simple, it's just the operation that isn't =) It's a complicated unit, and I didn't feel like the manual that came with it did a very good job of explaining all the functions.

The sound quality is amazing, and the power it can push is very nice! Definitly DEFINITLY worth it to buy this deck.

Sweet and a good deal!

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The system sounds awesome, very crisp and clear. I'm running this with 4 Polk db 570's and they sounds quite nice, even without a sub.

As others have mentioned, it'll take some getting used to before you're comfortable with all the menus and functions. I was a bit worried about running the recommended constant power wire directly to the battery, but this ended up being quite simple and a non-issue, you just have to find your own way through the firewall.

The Master Sheet supplied by Crutchfield was right on and greatly decreased my learning curve! It came out looking professionally installed and looks awesome.

I will, however, be looking for some type of protective "cover" for the display, it looks like it might be easily scratched.

Overall I'm quite satisfied!!!

Fantastic Sound Control!

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This unit gives fantastic control over your system, from a simple 2 speaker system to a 6+ speaker system. The ability to shut off the internal amp is great if you use external amps. The time-correction function does great things for imaging, even with a sub-par set of speakers. Sub control is great. The tilt-function has come in very handy on bright days. I was able to match the main button color to the color scheme of my trucks dash lights, which is pretty cool.

Using all of the functions that this unit has does take a bit of learning, but once you do it's reasonably intuitive.

Complaints: I would like to see more basic fuctions on the remote, such as subwoofer level control. Using the rotary knob can be a bit tricky on a bumpy road. Minor things, for sure. When using the Aux Input adapter to hook up my iPod, I have to turn down the volume on the iPod to avoid clipping of the speakers. This could also be due to not having the amps' gains set correctly for the pre-out voltage, though....still playing with that one!

!!! Its the best of the best!!

The unit is a little complex but once you get around that it will work great. It has so many features. I highly recommend getting the head unit.

First Kudo's to Crutchfield customer service. I ordered my receiver and paid the $450 price tag. Then after I received my order the 9833 went on sale for $150 less. I was credited the difference.
Secondly, the receiver is nice but can be a little complex to use. Great all around receiver!

Wiring Note

Selectable Faceplate Angle: In addition to the standard faceplate position, there are three preset faceplate angles for you to choose from.

Blackout Display Mode: When the Blackout mode is activated, the display turns off to reduce power consumption. The additional power made available by turning off the display helps enhance sound quality.

Display Dimming: This unit is equipped with an illumination dimmer lead. When the unit's dimmer mode has been set to "AUTO" and the illumination lead has been connected to your vehicle's headlight circuit, the display's illumination will dim to a fixed, preset level whenever the headlights are turned on. If preferred, you may choose the "MANUAL" dimmer mode setting, so the display is dim at all times.

Display Type: You may choose from the following three display types:

  • Type 1: the indicator on the left changes in a fixed sequence
  • Type 2: the indicator on the left changes according to the Multicolor Illumination
  • Type 3: the indicator on the left changes according to the audio level

Variable Button Color: The button illumination can be adjusted to any of 512 colors. The following color presets are stored in memory: Blue, Green, Amber, and Red. In addition, you can store one custom color under the User's preset. The custom color can be selected by turning the rotary encoder and cycling though all 512 colors.

Display Font: You can customize the display by selecting one of two available display fonts.

V-Drive Hybrid Amplifier: A V-Drive MOSFET power unit is used to boost the incoming voltage from 14.4 volts (approximately) to 17.2 volts. The increased voltage allows the unit to deliver peak output of 60 watts x 4 channels. While providing high power output, this unit can draw a substantial amount of current, so the constant power wire must be connected directly to the positive terminal of the battery in your vehicle. For more info, please see the "Wiring Note" section below.

Bass Engine Pro: Bass Engine functions provide control over your system, so you can tailor the sound to your personal tastes. Bass Engine Pro includes the following functions:

  • 6-Channel Digital Time Correction: The time correction feature allows you to create virtual speaker positions by delaying the signals being sent to the speakers closest to you. When the correct delay times have been entered for the front right, front left, rear right, rear left, subwoofer left, and subwoofer right speakers, all sounds reach your ears at the same time, providing optimized imaging and frequency response.
  • 6-Position Digital Crossover with Adjustable Slope: The digital crossover allows you to choose from the following modes:
    • 2-way Mode: A continuously variable 20-200Hz low-pass filter is available for the subwoofer outputs, and a continuously variable 20-200Hz high-pass filter is available for the front and rear preamp outputs. The slope for each filter can be set to 6, 12, 18, or 24dB/octave, or Flat. The level for each filter can be adjusted from 0 to -12dB.
    • 3-way Mode: A continuously variable 20-200Hz low-pass filter is available for the subwoofer outputs, and a continuously variable 1-20kHz high-pass filter is available for the front preamp outputs. The rear preamp outputs have a continuously variable 20Hz-20kHz low-pass filter and a continuously variable 20-200Hz high-pass filter. The slope for each filter can be set to 6, 12, 18, or 24dB/octave, or Flat. The level for each filter can be adjusted from 0 to -12dB.
  • 5-band Digital Parametric EQ: The 5-band parametric EQ lets you select a center frequency, then adjust its output level and even the "width" of the boost or cut for precise system tuning. You can select a frequency for each of the following bands: Band 1 (20Hz, 25Hz, 31.5Hz, 40Hz, 50Hz, 63HZ, 80Hz, or 100Hz), Band 2 (250Hz, 315Hz, or 400Hz), Band 3 (1kHz or 1.2kHz), Band 4 (3.2kHz or 4kHz), and Band 5 (10kHz, 12kHz, 16kHz, or 20kHz). Once a frequency is selected, you can adjust its level from -6dB to +6dB in 1dB increments. The Q for each frequency can be set to 1, 1.5, or 3. In addition to the user-adjustable EQ (User's 1-6), tone presets are stored into memory, allowing you to recall the best setting for different types of music. You may choose from the following tone presets: Rock, Pops, News, or Flat.
  • Subwoofer Level Control: The level of the subwoofer preamp outputs can be adjusted to balance the output of your subwoofer with that of your other speakers.
  • Subwoofer Phase Selector: The phase of the subwoofer outputs may be set to normal (0 degrees) or reverse (180 degrees); this function allows you to minimize phase cancellation of bass frequencies, for stronger bass response.

MX (MediaXpander): The CDA-9833 features the MediaXpander function, which is offered on Bass Engine Pro, Bass Engine Plus, and some Bass Engine models. The MediaXpander function makes vocals or instruments sound distinct by restoring sound quality typically lost during recording or transmission; this function helps restore audio information that becomes obscured when audio is compressed. The MX function can be applied to all sources, except AM radio. There are three expansion modes for each internal source (CD, FM, MP3/WMA/XM), and each source can have its own setting. There are only one or two expansion modes available for external sources.

i-Personalize: i-Personalize is an innovative way to customize select Alpine receivers to fit your specific listening needs. You log on to and download user preferences (based on vehicle and system type) for time correction, crossover, and parametric EQ. After selecting your settings, you can burn them onto a CD-R, and upload them to the head unit. You can also upload the settings to the head unit using the optional Alpine HDA-5460 Hard Disk Drive player, if one is connected.

MP3/WMA Playback: This unit can play CD-ROM, CD-R, and CD-RW discs containing MP3/WMA files recorded using the ISO 9660 Level 1 or Level 2 formats. MP3 files with constant and variable bit rates from 8 kbps to 320 kbps and WMA files with constant and variable bit rates from 48 kbps to 192 kbps are supported. Discs recorded using Joliet or other ISSO 9660 compliant formats can be played, but file and folder names will not be displayed correctly. CD-ROM XA, Mixed Mode CD, Enhanced CD (CD-Extra) and multi-session recordings are supported, but recordings made using Track At Once or packet writing cannot be correctly played back. Discs containing both standard CD audio and MP3/WMA data can be played; the unit may be set to play only the CD audio tracks or both types of tracks. ID3 tag v1 and v2 are supported; track title, artist name and album name ID3 tag data can be displayed.

Disc and Station Titling: Titles of up to 8 characters in length may be entered for up to 24 radio stations and 18 CDs.

XM Radio Ready: An optional XM Satellite Radio tuner may be connected to, and controlled by, this unit. The optional tuner, along with an antenna and subscription, allows you to receive XM Satellite Radio. XM Satellite Radio programming features up to 100 channels of digital-quality music, news, talk, sports, entertainment, and children's programming.

Auxiliary Input Ready: With the addition of the optional KCA-121B Ai-NET/RCA interface cable, the KCA-801B auxiliary input adapter, or the KCA-410C Versatile-Link Terminal, the audio from an auxiliary source can be played through this unit. When the KCA-121B interface cable is used, a CD changer cannot be connected to the head unit; the KCA-801B auxiliary input adapter allows you to connect an auxiliary source and an Ai-NET changer to the head unit. The KCA-410C Versatile-Link Terminal allows you to feed audio from up to two auxiliary sources and two Ai-NET CD changers to the head unit.

MobileHub Link: Using the MobileHub Link, you can connect an optional Junction Box and a Nokia 6310i tri-band GSM cellular phone, allowing you to control the incoming and outgoing calls from the head unit.

Amplifier Link: When an external Amplifier Link compatible amp is connected using the optional KCE-510M head unit interface, the amplifier settings are adjustable from the head unit. You can control the following settings: Input, Low-pass, Subsonic, P-EQ, Bass Comp, TCR, Phase, Turn-on Delay, and Output Disable. In addition, the head unit will display the following amplifier information: voltage, electric current, and temperature.

Note: The optional KCE-510M head unit interface allows you to connect up to 8 amplifiers to this head unit.

Power Off: When an external amplifier is connected and the built-in amplifier is not used, removing power from the built-in amplifier will improve the sound quality.

Changer Controls

Compatibility: This unit is compatible with 6- and 12-disc Alpine Ai-NET CD changers; also, this unit can control Alpine Ai-NET CD/MP3 changers and DVD changers. Alpine M-Bus CD changers cannot be controlled by this unit.

Hard Disk Drive Player Compatible: The CDA-9833 is compatible with the Alpine HDA-5460 Hard Disk Drive player.

Multiple Changer Control: With the addition of an optional adapter, more than one CD changer can be controlled. One KCA-400C adapter will allow you to connect up to 4 CD changers, and two KCA-400C adapters will allow you to connect up to a total of 6 CD changers. The KCA-410C Versatile-Link Terminal can be used to connect up to two CD changers and two auxiliary audio sources.

Text Display: When connected to a text capable changer, this unit can display text data from CD Text encoded CDs and MP3 CDs.

Disc Titling: When connected to a CD changer with disc title memory, CD titles may be entered and displayed for discs played in the changer. The title length and title capacity varies depending on the model of CD changer used; titles cannot be input for MP3 discs.

Clock Display Note

Clock Operation: This unit allows you to choose "keyed" or "unit on" clock operation. When the clock has been given display priority and the unit is turned off, the clock will be displayed whenever the ignition key is in the "on" or "accessory" position. If the clock is not given display priority, the clock is not displayed when the unit is off.

Wiring Note

Wiring Note: While providing high power output, this unit can draw a substantial amount of current. Per Alpine, this receiver's constant power wire must be connected directly to the positive terminal of the battery in your vehicle, and 10-gauge wire must be used to make the connection. This requires a length of 10-gauge power cable, an in-line fuse holder with a 20- to 30-amp fuse and a ring terminal (the ring terminal is used to connect the cable to the battery clamp). Although all the pieces of a basic amplifier wiring kit will not be not needed, if you do not wish to assemble the required items separately, the power wire and in-line fuse holder from a basic 10-gauge kit can be used to connect the constant power wire to your vehicle's battery. For a secure, permanent connection, the 10-gauge cable must be soldered to this receiver's 16-gauge constant power wire.
