Our take on the Alpine CDA-9847

by Matt Freeman
Alpine

Why replace your factory radio?

Two good reasons - sound quality and cool features. A new car stereo offers power that's superior to most factory radios, along with more sophisticated tone controls. And most car stereos offer built-in or optional features that add safety and fun to life in your car, including inputs for your iPod or MP3 player, Bluetooth connectivity for hands-free cell phone calls, satellite radio or HD Radio reception, and connections for building an audio system in your car.

It's awfully tough to pick out the Alpine CDA-9847 CD receiver's best feature. Is it the dash-enhancing display? The vast number of format options it gives you? And what about the high power amp and extensive sound processing? Wait a minute...maybe it's the combination of all these things that makes this receiver worth crowing about.

Variety is the name of the game with the CDA-9847. Sure it'll play your standard CDs, CD-Rs, and CD-RWs; if you've burned MP3s and WMAs on disc, you can bring them along, too. The Quick Search button lets you scroll through folders and files in a flash, so you find the song you want fast!

The potent internal amplifier (18 watts RMS x 4, CEA-2006 compliant) will rock your speaker system. Alpine's famous Bass Engine® lets you adjust the tone exactly to your liking, while sound-expanding BBE® processing adds focus and impact to all your music. For even more juice, you can send signal to external amplifiers using the three sets of preamp outputs.

This versatile receiver is also compatible with Alpine's KCA-420i iPod adapter. That's right — you can control your iPod right from your in-dash receiver. That's simply a mountain of music at your fingertips.

As if all that weren't enough, this powerhouse also features built-in satellite radio controls. Just add a compatible tuner and antenna, and subscribe to your preferred service (XM or SIRIUS), and you've opened up a world of coast-to-coast digital entertaiment, highlighted by over 120 channels of music, news, sports, and entertainment. You may never get out of the car again.

Features

CEA-2006 Compliant: The specifications given by Alpine for the built-in amplifier comply with the CEA-2006 mobile amplifier power testing and measurement standards from the CEA (Consumer Electronics Association). All manufacturers who comply with the standard can display the CEA-2006 logo on their product.

Satellite Radio Ready: There are several options for connecting an optional XM or Sirius Satellite Radio receiver to the CDA-9847. To receive XM Satellite Radio, you can connect the optional Terk XMD1000 Universal tuner (209XMD1000) and the Terk XM Direct Smart Digital Adapter for Alpine (209XMDALP1). To receive Sirius Satellite Radio, you can connect the optional Sirius tuner for Alpine (item # 607SIRALP1) directly to the head unit. A portable satellite radio receiver, such as the Delphi SkyFi or Sirius Sportster, can be connected to the head unit via an auxiliary input adapter. A compatible antenna and a subscription are also required to receive satellite radio programming from Sirius or XM.

Switchable Button Color: The illumination of the 4 main buttons (Source/Power, Band, |<<, and >>|) can be switched to any of 4 colors: Blue, Green, Amber, and Red. When the illumination is set to Blue or Green, the color of the other buttons is Green. When the illumination is set to Amber or Red, the color of the other buttons is Amber.

Dimmer: This unit is equipped with an illumination dimmer lead. When the unit's dimmer mode has been set to "Auto" and the illumination lead has been connected to your vehicle's headlight circuit, the button illumination will dim to a fixed, preset level whenever the headlights are turned on. If preferred, you may choose the "Manual" dimmer mode setting, so the button illumination is dim at all times.

Bass Engine: Bass Engine functions provide control over your system, so you can tailor the sound to your personal tastes. Bass Engine includes the following functions:

  • Bass Control:
    • Bass Center Frequency: Select from 60Hz, 80Hz, 100Hz, or 120Hz
    • Bass Band Width: Select from 1 (narrow) to 4 (wide)
    • Bass Level: Select from -7 to +10
  • Treble Control:
    • Treble Center Frequency: Select from 7.5kHz, 10kHz, 12.5kHz or 15kHz
    • Treble Level: -7 to +7

BBE: BBE makes vocals or instruments sound distinct regardless of the music source. You can select the level of the BBE effect (1, 2, or 3), or turn BBE off. Note: You can set different levels of BBE for each source. BBE is not available for AM radio.

Interrupt Feature: When a device having the interrupt feature (such as a cellular telephone) is connected to the receiver, the audio signal will be automatically muted whenever the interrupt signal is received from the device. The supplied wiring harness contains a pink Interrupt lead that needs to be connected to the device's interrupt signal connection.

MP3/WMA Playback: This unit can play CD-ROM, CD-R, and CD-RW discs containing MP3/WMA files recorded using the ISO 9660 Level 1 or Level 2 formats. MP3 files with constant and variable bit rates from 8 kbps to 320 kbps and WMA files with constant and variable bit rates from 48 kbps to 192 kbps are supported. Discs recorded using Joliet, Romeo, or other ISSO 9660 compliant formats can be played, but file and folder names will not be displayed correctly. Discs containing both standard CD audio and MP3/WMA data can be played; the unit may be set to play only the CD audio tracks or both types of tracks. ID3 tags v1 and v2, and WMA tags are supported; track title, artist name and album name ID3 tag data can be displayed.

Disc and Station Titling: Titles of up to 8 characters in length may be entered for up to 24 radio stations and 18 CDs.

Text/File/Folder Search: When you're playing a disc with CD Text, or MP3 tags, you can easily search for a track or file by its title. Once you have activated the search mode, you can use the rotary encoder to quickly scan through the titles to locate the desired track, and select it by pressing the rotary encoder.

Subwoofer Output: In addition to front and rear preamp outputs, the CDA-9847 features a dedicated subwoofer preamp output. The subwoofer output has an independent volume control, and can be turned on or off.

Power IC Off: When an external amplifier is connected and the built-in amplifier is not used, removing power from the built-in amplifier will improve the sound quality.

CD Changer Controls

Ai-NET Compatible: An optional Ai-NET-compatible 6- or 12-disc CD changer (including MP3 Changers) may be connected to, and controlled by, the CDA-9847. With the KCA-410c Versatile Link Terminal (item # 500KCA410C), you can control multiple changers with this unit.

iPod-Ready: An iPod or iPod Mini can be controlled from this unit when connected via the KCA-420i Alpine Interface Adapter for iPod (item # 500KCA420i). While connected to the head unit, the iPod's battery is charged, and the artist/song title information is displayed on the face of the head unit. The unit's Quick Search feature allows you to search by playlist, album name, artist name, or song title. Random and repeat play functions are also available.

Optional Auxiliary Input: With the optional KCA-121B Ai-NET/RCA interface cable or KCA-410C Versatile Link Terminal, you can input audio from an auxiliary source unit, such as a TV, VCR or portable unit.

Clock Display Note

Clock Operation: This unit allows you to choose "keyed" or "unit on" clock operation. When the clock has been given display priority and the unit is turned off, the clock will be displayed whenever the ignition key is in the "on" or "accessory" position. If the clock is not given display priority, the clock is not displayed when the unit is off.

Best HU For The Money

Written By Alex, Florida on Thursday, October 06, 2011

This headunit came with my car, and I am very glad it did. It has been super reliable and great sounding the whole time I have had it. While it doesn't have eq functions my amps do, so please keep that in mind, when I talk about the sq. Overall I would recommend this to anyone and hey even after 5+ years they still fetch $100 dollars used on various sites, there's something to be said about Alpine quality.

Alpine is the best!

Written By Steve, Reno, NV on Sunday, August 22, 2010

This is the best mp3 cd player I have ever owned. I bought one over 5 yrs ago when it
first came out, and it still works flawlessly. the design is beautiful and looks better than
the factory unit. it has the easiest controls of any deck out there with the quick file search
functions and easy sound processing menus. very simple to set and operate. I love the
amber illumination (and white lcd display) which matches my interior lights perfectly.
The sound quality is like nothing you will ever hear from a pioneer/kenwood/sony/
panasonic or other unit. I "upgraded" from an $800 pioneer premier deck and this alpine
blows it away. and you have the AINET adapter in case you want to add the alpine 6-disc
DVD changer in the future, and 3 sets of preouts. it has a true 20w rms measured power
rating per channel which is plenty to power my infinity reference speakers.

If the unit does not work properly or does not recognize aux input, you simply need to
press the red reset button with a pen behind the faceplate. as for playing burnt mp3 cds,
the unit is very picky about brands. the best brand for this unit is TDK. do not use
anything else! it is now 2010 and i still have not found a suitable upgrade unit to replace
this with. unfortunately even the new alpines do not have the classic good looks and
color changing ability that this older unit does. so i will continue to enjoy it as long as it
lasts. i am an alpine fan for life.

Alpine CDA-9847

Written By Donald, Imboden, AR on Sunday, January 22, 2006

Purchased this to replace the aging stock unit in my 1995 4 Runner. All I can say is "WOW". What a difference it made, even with the stock 6 speakers. Power is great, looks really good in the dash also. I wanted a unit that didn't have to flip the face down to load a cd and this fit the bill perfect. This was my first purchase with Crutchfield and I am very impressed. You can't find better service any where else. The install instructions were excellent, free wiring adaptor and support if needed. I had a tracking number 3 hours after I made the order online. Very happy with my purchase.

Very Good Value

Written By Joy, Boston, MA on Thursday, January 05, 2006
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I bought this to replace the factory unit in my 1997 Saturn SL2, about four years after its CD player failed - and I have been extremely impressed with the sound quality and performance of the 9847. The clarity is such that I can even pinpoint the major range weaknesses in my existing stock speakers (next up to be replaced)! It gets excellent radio reception (pulling in community stations from the next state), and CD/MP3 playback is intuitive. I connected my iPod by attaching the Ai-Net/RCA adapter and drilling a hole in the rear of the pocket through which to secure the RCA inputs. One caveat: the Saturn kit with pocket is fairly shallow - the depth is about as wide as an iPod, with no extra room for cable storage. I have been content with the Bass Engine equalizer, but the biggest benefit I have found is the BBE - I'm not sure exactly what it does, but simply by setting it to +1 I can get a much richer sound from all genres of music. I can finally hear the depth and range in all my digital music, and I have yet found need to crank the volume past 12 (even for scratchy old blues recordings). I did install the unit with the help (and tools) of an audio engineer friend, so I can't comment on Crutchfield's customer service, but the instructions were fairly straightforward. The only trouble we ran into was initially getting the unit to display an "AUX" option under Sources, so it could recognise the attached iPod - I actually have no idea how exactly this was resolved, but after a few minutes of fiddling it worked. Also, the faceplate managed to get scratched the very first time I removed it, but this is a minor cosmetic concern. All in all, very satisfying performance!

Clean design, Clean sound

Written By Christopher, Colorado Springs on Wednesday, January 04, 2006

After doing some quick research on the top rated on Crutchfield and other reviews of a good unit, I decided to get this without playing with it in store. Normally, I dont buy sight unseen, but the reviews were so solid and my previous experience with Alpine made me confidently order.

This was my first purchase with Crutchfield and I have to say I was VERY impressed with the documentation and removal instructions to remove the dash on my Elantra. All companies should learn from these guys on how to do it right! This also came with a bracket and wire harness so there was no modding needed, just a quick, simple 20 minute install. Yes, you might save a few bucks elsewhere, but the extras given made the whole install experience worth every penny...no more splicing OEM wires and trying to figure out what wire Hyundai defines as each speaker lead, etc.

The unit itself has a clean look with easy to navigate buttons. After years of dealing with push button vol up/down, it was great to get a dial control. This is infinitely easier to change quickly.

The colors are great, in my car the blue is very vibrant and pleasing to the eye. For a change, the red and green are nice as well.

Right now I have the head unit powering a pair of component MB Quart 6 1/2s. The sound is crystaline clear with little expected distortion until the loudest levels. I have an Orion amp that will be powering these as soon as I get around to it...in the meantime I would still be satisfied if I was just powering them off the unit.

Nice touches...the unit fades up to your previous volume level when you restart the car for a "soft on" effect.

GET THIS ALPINE!

Good features, good sound, but...

Written By Thomas, Chambersburg, PA on Saturday, December 31, 2005

I bought this as a replacement for the factory JBL system in my 2001 Toyota Solara so I could play mp3's and wma's via a direct connection from my flash player.

Pro: Installation was relatively pain free; the controls are very well laid out; manual well written (two inserts worth of corrections though??!!;)Mid to High range sound excellent; looks good installed.

Con: Very bright display: don't be fooled, the "dimmer" does nothing more than barely lower the control BUTTON brightness, leaving the display glowing like the center of the sun at night. For me, extremely annoying as I do a good bit of long distance driving on rural roads where it's DARK. Here's a fix: "Insta Cling Windshield Tint Strip," charcoal grey. Cut a piece long enough to cover the display, adding protection from scratches, and dimming the display just enough.

Secondly, the bass response seems to bottom out too soon. I'm sure this is a function of my speakers, and I'm going to install a small sub to see (hear!) if that helps.

Overall a 8.5 total score for a well engineered item at a great price. Happy New Year to all from south central Pennsylvania!

Excellent and Affordable

Written By Snowcr4sh, Illinois on Tuesday, December 27, 2005

I bought this head unit about a month ago. Installation was fairly easy, and I had it hooked up in about an hour (After figuring out the install kit lol.) But wow, this head unit sounds amazing. It delivers plenty of power to all the speakers, the acoustics are crystal clear, and this unit made my sub MUCH more accurate. Highs are amazing and all bass and lows are very accurate and clear with perfect tone. I love the extra sound controls/colors and many options you can easily set, and the Ipod/Satellite radio-ready options are great features.

But here is the reason for the 4 stars.

I was extremely happy and it was perfect until about 1 & 1/2 weeks after I bought it. CD's would start to get stuck; it would just make a fast-paced clicking noise and not eject but after a few times of trying, it would finally work. And about a week after that it went crazy. No CD's would eject and any button I pushed would try to eject the CD.

I am a big Alpine fan, and an Alpine product failing surprised and dissapointed me, but it wasn't a big deal. I exchanged it without any hassel or problems. I plugged it in in a about 1 minute, and this one works perfectly.

I'd highly reccommend this head unit and any Alpine product to everyone. Even though my first unit failed, it was an easy hassel-free fix and the replacement works great.

Alpine CDA-9847 - Nissan Frontier 2003

Written By Charles, Canton, GA on Wednesday, December 07, 2005
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This head unit produces excellent quality sound. I've matched it up with Alpine Type-S 6.5, 5.25, dome tweeters, and bazooka BTA-6200 subwoofer. I'm currently running the speakers off of the head units built-in amp and I'm very impressed. Of course an amp is a most, but for now this unit rocks. The great thing about this head unit is it's versatility to be configured several different ways. Can't say enough about Crutchfield's service, they also get 5 stars.

Spend a little more to get this stereo!

Written By zx10rrider, Salt Lake City, Utah on Thursday, November 03, 2005
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I originally purchased this head unit from Crutchfield for my Ford Ranger. Installation was simple. Sound quality from both CD and Radio playback is terrific. I am impressed with Alpine's build quality and extra features that will allow me to add extras (three amps, ipod, ect) to this unit. Don't be fooled by the Apline CDA-9847's power rating of 18X4 RMS. This unit sounds great. I was so impressed with this unit that I recently sold my truck but removed the stereo and installed it in my current vehicle. When I purchased this stereo Crutchfield provided a addition wiring harness that made installtion and removal a snap. You can't buy a better head unit for the price.

So good I got two...

Written By Robert, Austin, TX on Monday, October 24, 2005
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I bought the Alpine CDA-9847 receiver for my wife's Camry. I assembled the wiring harness with solder and shrink wrap at the kitchen table in less than an hour. The rest of the installation took about 15 minutes.

This deck is quite impressive - blows away the factory stereo. Simply sounds great! CD playback is clean and crisp and radio reception is top notch. I had no idea that this receiver would make the factory speakers sound so good. MP3 playback was important too and the 9847 has excellent features including full disc shuffle. The large character display showing artist, song name, etc. is very convenient.

Since the Alpine 9847 sounded so good and the installation was so effortless, I bought a second one for my 4Runner. Again, a total breeze to install and it makes my factory speaker sound great too.

What a head unit from Alpine

Written By James, Pullman WA on Sunday, October 23, 2005
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Man, let me tell ya, this thing really rocks, plenty of features. I replace my factory radio with this baby. And connect it to a Alpine F240 with front and sub. The sound is amazing. I never heard any unit sounds this good. You won't go wrong with this Alpine, although the price is a little bit higher compare with Kenwood, Sony, and Pioneer, but it's orth it. Thanks to Crutchfield, fast shipping, and sent me all the stuff i need for the installation. Usefull instruction book, although i still went for a pro installation. I am a Alpine fan now

This Alpine ROCKS!

Written By Lane, Colorado Springs, Co on Tuesday, October 11, 2005

For $199.00 this Alpine runs circles around it's competition. My former Alpine(model cda-9805..also from Crutchfield) was great, but lacked the Mp3 and various other media technology. In two years time Alpine has manged to pack twice the features into this updated player. The Mp3 file capability is awsome! I can cram like 9 cd's into one and the ability to search by folder name, really makes life easy. The sound of this unit is EXCELLENT..Alpine has made some major breakthroughs with this unit. I did a simple change out from the previous deck and modified nothing, and I cant believe the difference in sound. Also the 5 color illumination is great as I can now match my Apline to my XM Roady...The only thing I wish it came with, was the remote. But you can buy it seperately..You can spend more on a different brand or model...but why! The Alpine CDA 9847 kicks some major butt! This Alpine rocks!

Excellent Receiver

Written By Luis, Los Angeles, CA on Sunday, October 02, 2005
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I am new to aftermarket receivers so I did my homework and researched all that would fit my car. After that it came down to the Alpine's and Kenwood's. I went for this receiver b/c of its features and its reputation. It took me awhile but I went with my first choice with the CDA 9847. Great CD quality and it vastly improved the sound of my stock speakers. Oh yea, it goes very loud, i don't need a huge system but with 200 total watts, thats enough for me. Installing the unit was a bit difficult, the hardest part was taking the stock receiver out. Overall, the looks, the illumination (especially with sun glare) is great. I love this receiver and will probably purchase another Alpine unit later on in the future. Picks up radios really good and is easy to control the features. I like the face b/c it doesn't have to fold down to insert a cd. I would definitely recommend this unit to anyboody looking for a good looking, great performance, and quality receiver. I loved Crutchfield's service, definitely helped me out.

I got this receiver to hear music in my Tempo and to have a CD player and this unit far exceeds all my expectations. It goes well with my dash and I love the option to change the illumination colors. I love playing data discs especially for long drives, like going back home for me which is like 4.5 hrs from my school. Again, definitely recommend this unit, and from crutchfield b/c of supplying me with everything that I need. Thanks, I'm very happy with my purchase.

Another exellent product from Alpine!

Written By Andrew, Lusby, MD. on Wednesday, September 28, 2005
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Once again Alpine has created another Head Unit that performs well beyond my expectations. Throughout the years I have read reviews on Alpine Head Units and watched my friends install them in their cars. After listening first hand for myself I knew I had to get one. I recently bought a 2006 Tiburon and immedaitely took out the factory unit and installed this one in its place. One second after installing it I completely noticed a change in the music produced through the factory speakers. Not only were they noticeably louder and clearer, but the bass response seemed almost twice as loud as well. Now most people will say that any aftermarket Head Unit will produce the same results but they are sorely mistaken because I have heared many Head Units with stock systems behind them and they don't sound even half as good. So if your looking For an excellent Head Unit at a great price that will rival all others, this is the one you wan't. I highly recommend it to anyone who is at all serious about the quality of music that they listen to!

Written By Bruce, Mount Vernon, Wa. on Sunday, September 25, 2005
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Upgraded an old JVC deck with this unit and the power, quality and sonic precision of this deck blew me away. Easy install, excellent instructions and support. Tons of power so I can blast this unit with the windows down as I cruise down the highway. Easy to use controls, brite display. This unit is well worth the price and in fact performs better then some units costing much more. Can't say enough good things about this deck.

Great CD Player!! All You Will Ever Need

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I installed this in my 2005 Dodge Ram Quad Cab. The entire install took me 20 mins. The wire harness fit like a glove and made the installation super easy. I didn't even have to read the installtion instructions.. it was that easy. Just looking at it - you could figure it out. The CD player is great. Great sound, easy to use, and looks great. Apline fan for over 20 years. I just wish one thing...
when you eject or inserted a CD - wish the unit would not stop the broadcast of the radio station you were listening too.

Alpine CDA-9847

Written By Gennaro, Texas on Thursday, September 22, 2005
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

If you are looking for a good performing mp3 cd player this is a good choice. (I'm no audiophile so I can't comment on sound quality or performance)

Install was easy (their customer support is amazing btw- my last stereo was ripped out which made install a little tough, but Crutchfield walked me through nicely).

The most important element for an mp3 player are the menues for me- and Alpine has the best in its class. all the other brands are a pain to navigate with IMO.

Tags show up nicely, but just put each album in a different folder to make it easier. I recommend naming the actual file the title of the song instead of "ARTIST NAME - TITLE" it makes it easier to find what you are looking for.

Display is clean and pretty (I hate all that useless display on sony and kenwood) Preset buttons are a little small for me, it took a little while to get used to- but they aren't bad.

I picked this model because you can do the ipod connection thing... but I was planning on just using an aux line in (cheaper than the alpine ipod interface thing) BUT there is no aux in on this one- you have to go a model lower (unless you buy the Alpine ipod interface or a $15 adapter).

I will most likely stick with alpine for all my future purchases, it may be slightly more expensive but its well worth it imo.

Kicking headunit

Written By Ace, Sharon Springs, NY on Monday, September 19, 2005
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This is a really good head unit for the price. Two of my other friends have them and they both say the same as me. Hooking it up especially with the provided mounting brackets and wiring harness in my 96 Explorer made me look like a pro at doing it. All the features to shape the music that I like to play really loud are the best. I'm working on getting a subwoofer hooked up and the pre-amp outputs make that convient also. All in All I would recommend this headunit to anybody who asks me what kind of H/U to buy. ALPINE ALL THE WAY!!!!!!

BBE processing !!!!

Written By omar, San Diego,Tx on Saturday, September 10, 2005
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The reason I rated this product a 3 is because of BBE processing. From 1-22 volume level sounds excellent w/BBE 1,But once u pass 22 on volume all highs are dropped.BBE focuses more on vocals at high volume. If BBE is turned off, my speakers tend to distort even though highs are still there.Maybe the kicker KQ9 eq will clean up the sound for $200.Also on my 2004 chrysler sebring I have 3.5" in the dash,6x9 2-way in the doors,6x9 3-way in the rear deck. All rockford fosgate speakers.2004 models. In the trunk I have PL1-210.(2)8 ohms RF,powered by a sony xm-504z which is also giving power to my rear deck in 3-way mode. The alpine H/U is giving power to the 3.5 in the dash using front channels and 6x9 in the doors using rear channels.Maybe alpine could use more power in their H/U.But other than that, all is great.Im also still trying to figure out wide or narrow on the deck.?

This thing ROCKS!!

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This is an awesome H/U for the price. Actually this is an awesome H/U for any price.

This is the third Alpine H/U I've owned and there is a reason for it. The quality construction and sound are hard to beat. If you're looking for a H/U that can do everything the average listner would want then this is it. It doesn't have any unnecessary bells and whistles but gives you lots of room to grow. Hooking an MP3 player to it is easy, and if you have an I-Pod you can dock it to this H/U with the module. If you want sattelite radio you can choose either XM or Sirrius.

The display is bright and beautiful and the controls are easy to use. The option of changing the illumination to match your cars is pretty sweet.

Sound clarity is precise and powerful. All the sound shaping options are easy to use and really let you fine tune the sound to your preference.

For $200 you would have a hard time finding a better buy. Crutchfiled customer service and the install sheets and kits are all perfect. Don't waste your time or money buying from a local shop...use Crutchfield and do it yourself.

Alpine CDA-9847

Written By Jonathan, Brick, Nj on Tuesday, September 06, 2005
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Totally impressed with the Alpine CDA-9847. My Stock Ford Focus ZX3 Hatchback made me cry on the inside when I used my fm transmitter with my Creative Nomad MP3 player. Took me about 25 minutes to solder everything together and plug it all up and what a difference. Total difference in sound and I can't believe that the stock speakers are holding up to everything, but wouldn't mind to upgrade in the future and possibly get my hands on a few subs (only to blow the doors odd the focus!). Just like in the other reviews, I heard things that hadn't been there before.

Well worth the money, defiantly a good buy, and for all you people out there, might give this a try. If you connected your dimmer switch up to the deck, try at night time putting your lights on and dimming the lights all the way down with the music going. In my car, the lights on the deck, especially the four bright ones blink nonstop to the music, bright as anything. Fun I guess!!! Enjoy!

Great sound with a few user interface issues

Written By Dan, Seattle on Tuesday, August 30, 2005
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Im very pleased with this unit despite some minor quirks of the user interface. I wanted an upgraded head unit for my car, and liked the idea of replacing the cassette adapter interface for my iPod (and the tangle of wires that went with it). I did a lot of research and the Alpine solution seemed to be the best price/performance value.

Im very pleased with the improvement in sound quality from the FM tuner/CD (regular and MP3)/and the iPod. I like being able to control the iPod from the head unit despite the limitations of the interface compared to the iPod click wheel. I dont think it is a good idea to be searching a music library for a particular song on a regular basis while driving, so Im happy to select a play list, set it on shuffle and drive. Being able to skip a song by pressing track up is enough for me. If you feel you need the iPod interface, you're probably better off with an aux-input solution and a power adapter.

There are two issues about the way the system works that I find mildly annoying:
1) The system does not remember the shuffle (MIX) settings when you turn it off. So you have to reset it every time you get in the car.
2) Switching the display option for one source, affects the selected display option for another source. For example, switching the iPod source to song title turns off the clock on the tuner; and displaying the clock on the tuner resets the iPod to the display mode with the clock displayed. You have to reset the preferred display mode when you switch between sources.

In conclusion, overall a very good unit and I am satisfied with it. A star off for the minor annoyances in the user interface.

Great CD Player. The MP3 capabilities are a plus and the unit just looks plain awesome in the dark. The internal amp powers my upgraded speakers (Infinity 6012si and Pioneer TS-A1681R) just fine and the sound quality is great. The 2 pair speaker preamps and pair of subwoofer outputs just add to the great package. Buy this CD player, you wont regret it.

I purchased the 9847 recently so that I could install sirius in my car...my previous alpine deck, which i love, was not sirius ready...the sound that this deck pumps out is unbelieveable, great value, easy to use...I would highly recomment this deck to anyone looking for an upgrade, particularly if you're going to satellite radio...hooks up easily to a sirius module, and is far less distracting and worrysome than the plug & play units

I just installed this head unit in my 2005 Hyundai Elantra and it is unbelievable! The difference between the the stock unit and this one is incredible. After taking the time and setting the sound settings I popped in a cd that I have had for a couple of years and it sounded so clear, unlike what I have been hearing. Just like in the other reviews, I heard things that hadn't been there before. Even just using the stock speakers I am completely satisfied with the result. It's just an awesome player at a great price!

Wished I purchased day 1

Written By Chip, Portsmouth, NH on Wednesday, August 10, 2005
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This stereo is awesome. Exceeded any expectation. I had a nice monsoon factory system that I loved and wasn't sure if I really wanted to go after-market. After a year of dealing with XM FM modulators and iPod FM modulators, my only reget is that I didn't buy this the day it was introduced. The sound quality blows away anything I previously owned and it intergrated perfectly with the factory amp located under the passenger seat and factory speakers. The sound of both the iPod and XM are awesome. It can be difficult to locate songs on the iPod if you have a large library. I also found it difficult to tune XM stations until I had them added to the the 18 pre-sets. If you want excellent quality while keeping cost down, you will love this one. I can't believe it didn't cost more.

Alpine's still got it

Written By Brian, Memphis, TN on Monday, August 08, 2005
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I've used Alpine stereos for my aftermarket car audio projects for over 10 years now and this one has just as much quality and power as my first one that I installed in 1993. The ability to change the illumination color is a must have for me since my car uses red/amber interior lighting.

I also love the aux-in feature with the Ai-Net cable. I just plug in my iRiver H10 and hit shuffle. The CDA-9847 provides crystal clear sound quality and enough power to really drive those stock "premium" speakers that seemed so quiet before.

I definitely recommend this one if you're looking to upgrade from the cassette adapter or the FM transmitter for your non-iPod MP3 player.

Great Looks, Phenomenal Sound, Nice to Look At

Written By Tim, Ocala, FL on Wednesday, August 03, 2005

I recently replaced the factory stereo in my 2000 Tacoma (it needed to be "encouraged" to eject a CD) with this wonderful Alpine unit. Contrary to what others here have said concerning lack of an EQ, the Bass Engine and BBE feature let you shape the sound perfectly. There is more than enough power from the internal amp to make the factory speakers sound incredible(I have since upgraded, but that's another review). One thing that attracted me to this model was the ability to play MP3/WMA files. Being able to listen to an atist's entire catalog on one disc is a tremendous plus. I can't wait to upgrade the rest of the audio in my truck, as the CDA-9847 should be able to handle anything I throw at it.

As far as shipping & installation are concerned, I could not be happier with Crutchfield. It arived at my door in 2 days aand I had it installed within the hour. The harnesses and pocket fit perfectly and made this a totally painless process. Thanks, Crutchfield!

This reciever is awesome. I have put all my CD's and music from my computer onto data discs to play in it, and reads all of the song titles, artists, and album names. Plus the ability to change the button lighting color makes it fully customizable to match my interior, which is red/amber. If want high quality performance with mid-range to low price, this is the one.

Alpine CDA-9847

Written By Daniel, Huntsville, AL on Thursday, July 28, 2005

The sound improvement over my factory 2000 Honda Civic cd player is large, even with just stock speakers. The Dell DJ30 is connected to the auxillary input on the Alpine and I couldn't be happier. If you experience a bit of road noise as I do, and you find that you have trouble hearing distinct voices and instruments in your music (it all sounds like mush!), the Alpine's BBE sound processing resolves this beautifully. My only gripe is a lack of additional equalizer options.

Great sound and features for the $$

Written By Tim, Connecticut on Thursday, July 28, 2005
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This is my second Alpine deck after the CDA9807 in my previous vehicle. That one was so good over two years of ownership that I felt obligated to go with Alpine again. The install in my 2002 Accord Coupe was incredibly simple due to all the extras that came free from Crutchfield. I had never bought from them before and it really paid off, especially when it came to the wiring! It's so much nicer to securely solder the plug-in harness on my table rather than trying to use the sometimes finicky crip connectors behind the dash.

I've had this deck installed for a few days now and I really like it! The difference in sound quality between the stock 6-disc changer and this Alpine is like night and day, even with stock speakers. Plus, I have my SkyFi connected through the Aux input instead of the terrible cassette adapter that I was using before. FM modulators and adapters work, but a direct connection is by far the best way to go!

The controls and menus are very easy to figure out, and the single-line text display is easy to read. I have to give a big thumbs-up to the fact that I can change the color of the buttons, too. (Blue looks good but can get hard on the eyes at night.)

I would say that the only thing I miss on this deck vs. my old one is the MediaXpander, which seems to have been displaced by BBE. MediaXpander was extremely good at rounding-out my compressed music (especially XM), and I can't quite figure out what BBE is supposed to be doing. It's not a huge deal but possibly worth consideration. Overall, though, I have absolutely no regrets about purchasing this deck. Especially for the price!

High Quality Solution

Written By wtfg, Boston, Ma on Saturday, July 23, 2005

I recently purchased an Ipod and was given a subscription to Sirius Satellite radio. Living in Boston, FM transmitters are not a good option, there are no open channels (I've heard some people have had luck with channel 87.9, but neither my old Pioneer deck nor my XACT XTR1 Sirius tuner had this as an option). Plus the sound quality on the FM transmitters is usually not that good due to the compression. So I ordered the Alpine 9847 with the KCA 420i Ipod adapter, as well as the PIE Aux Input. The PIE aux input would allow me to run both the Sirius XACT Tuner and the KCA 420i through the Alpines AI Net connection. But when I plugged the XACT tuner into it, it hummed (probably a grounding problem, but I couldn't figure it out), so it got sent back. I ordered the Sirius SIR ALP1 instead, which has a passthrough for the 420i. Boomers did a great job on the install. But to my surprise, I had to pay Sirius for a second subscription fee - apparently they charge by the radio and I wanted to keep the XACT to use at home. So how does it all sound? The Ipod sounds amazings, way better than FM transmitter and the controls are easy to use. Sirius sounds much better than when I was using the FM transmitter. The CD player and the tuner are the weakest part of the package, the CD player will sometimes stop playing CDs (they've always been beat up or cheaply burned when this has happened so I'll take some of the credit for this). The tuner has static on powerful stations (like WBCN). But if you're thinking about the future, which will most likely be satellite radio and Ipods - this is the way to go.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I bought this HU to replace the factory infinity system that came in my '98 Dodge Intrepid ES. The factory system sounded great (until the speakers blew), but this thing blows the doors off my car!

It's been 10+ years since I've had something other than the factory system in my car. I had no idea that aftermarket car audio had come this far.

I've got this HU matched up with an Alpine amplifier (even though this system didn't really need one...the internal amp sounds GREAT) and Infinity speakers front and rear. I can't begin to tell you how great it sounds!

The only real sticky point with this unit is the number of setup options. There's alot to do to really make this unit shine. However, the end result is worth it, so I can deal with it. Also, the user guide isn't exactly intuitive in places. Again, I can deal with it.

Thanks to Jackson and the whole Crutchfield staff for your help and recommendations during this stereo upgrade process. You've made a rather daunting task painless and the result is fantastic!

rock solid

Written By JJ, Austin, TX on Thursday, July 21, 2005

I just installed this system last night in my 95' saturn sl1. The install was a sinch with all that crutchfield provides. It looks great and sounds better. The only thing that sounds better than an Alpine head unit is another Alpine head unit. This unit is pushing 4 Polk Audio DB675 2-ways. No amp is needed to hear these bad boys. I did have one problem though, the constant power to this unit is ran off the door chime of all things, which is packing a mighty 5 amp fuse. Needless to say the CDA-9847 blew this in a matter of minutes. A 10 amp works fine. I have to give it to the crutchfield technical staff, these guys no there stuff and are not shy to share this information. This radio is easy to learn to use, tons of adjustments and features to keep anybody busy for hours. Previous head units I have owned include sony explodes, kenwood, clarion, pioneer, and one other alpine. This beats all.

Alpine Rocks

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I bought this HU as a replacement for my factory installed one in my 2005 Focus. The package arrived a few days later along with all the parts I needed to install it. I went to the garage and one hour later, I was done. The Master Sheets Crutchfield provides are excellent.

The Alpine is simply amazing. The sound is like nothing I've ever heard. I am hearing parts of songs that I didn't even know were there. The controls are easy to use and it's loaded with features - it did take a little while to get the audio settings 'tweaked', but it's well worth the time - trust me - take the time to get it setup right and you won't be sorry.

I've played regular CDs in it and MP3 CDs. Both sound amazing. It doesn't skip at all.

Buy this deck, you won't be sorry.

This Alpine rocks

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

My first Alpine casette HU was 14 years ago and I paid $350. At the time, it was well worth it. I can now say the same about this new CD player, althought it only cost $200. The free harness that Crutchfield supplied spliced right into the Alpine harness and when I did the install, the factory plugs slid right together. (all the stuff they sent fit perfect) The actual install on my 1996 S-10 only took an hour, but that was after I spent a half hour wiring the harnesses together. -Much easier on the table than in the dash though.

On to the sound... The HU is great and the available bass and treble controls are a nice touch. CDs do not skip, even in a harsher truck suspension. The radio tuner is better than factory. (in my experience, aftermarket radios' tuners aren't as good)Even with the factory speakers, the radio sounds 10x better than factory. I can't wait to install the new speakers now.

I gave this radio 5 stars because of the available features and because it just sounds great. I would have voted for 4.5 if they had the option simply because the buttons along the bottom are too small and you need to look at the unit to see where to start hitting buttons. Setup was also a bit confusing, but I guess it's because of all the cool features and the need to keep les than 30 buttons on the unit. In any event, I would buy this unit again in a heartbeat.

I have a `98 Honda Accord Ex with stock speakers and have had this unit installed for a little over a month. Install was a breeze thanks to the aid of the supplied instructions from Crutchfield. Overall, this unit is logically set-up and easy to use. I haven't dabbled in MP3 or WMA file writing, yet. The tuner is crystal clear, about the best specs on the market. Same with the CD player. The only things I would like to see made available with this unit are: a remote and speaker-level crossovers. For the quality, I can't complain.

Subaru Outback now sounds great

Written By Scott, Elmira, NY on Friday, June 24, 2005
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I paid $200 extra for the Subaru "speaker upgrade" option when we bought this car. What a joke. I've been suffering with the factory setup for a year. Fortunately, it's my wife's, so I don't have to drive it too much. I finally decided to fix the audio quality problem, and link our Delphi SkyFi2 directly to a new HU at the same time. Crutchfield recommended the 9847 and 4 Infinity 6012si's. I also got the remote and the auxiliary input adapter. All I can say is WOW. I had a few install issues, but worked through them with Crutchfield's tech support and now I want to drive that car all the time. Fantastic sound on CD's and MP3's. Great tuner. No FM station searching for the SkyFi2. It looks great in the car, too. I'm thrilled.

Great If you got the High Quality Music

Written By Mike, Yuma,AZ on Thursday, June 16, 2005
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I bought this a week ago. installed it myself and i got to say it is very good when you have good quality music on your burned cd. Any cd that is burned using a cheap burning program ( Windows media player) doesn't work! But if you got nero or a program that will reproduce the music then get this. This is a high quality reciver that only takes high quality cds. The sound and visual setup is EASY! This doesn't take alot of buttons to set it up. Its very simple. And the 4 changable display colors are great. Ordering the remote would be awsome if you like showing off. Also the individual sub control is great is you got the setup right.

I got this in a 01 Fordfocus hatchback. I got pioneer 4 way speakers on my doors powered by a pioneer amp. I also have a 10" Precision Power sub powered by a 4 channel Precision power amp (300 watts).

Good Full Featured Deck

Written By Lomax, Sunnyvale, CA on Wednesday, June 15, 2005

I purchased this model for my 2003 Nissan 350z and I am most happy.
I chose this model based on feedback I received from posters on a 350z auto forum. I was specifically looking for an iPod compatible deck that was simple to operate and used NO motorized parts.
I am leery of any motorized faceplates due to a reoccurring issue I had with a Kenwood deck a year or two back.
The power of the deck is more than adequate for my smaller interior space and the exterior of the unit is easy to memorize and operate (even at high speeds).
I enjoy the multiple vibrant illumination colors which in my opinion are the best in the industry. The button colors and hue change completely giving the deck a significantly different appearance.
The shipping took a bit longer than anticipated for the deck to arrive but I also ordered the iPod Inet interface device with it. The integration of the iPod interface device was quick and each. I had fun installing this solution.

The packaging was good and the kit/harness worked perfectly for my car. This made the install simple and trouble free. I was impressed with the documentation and instructions included with the unit.

Note: 350z - Navigation owners: The instructions do not include the disassembly of the navigation unit control panel. I did research to find the best way to remove the panel.
Just pry it off to retrieve the screws below the nav screen.

What a difference!!!

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

After purchasing some Alpine 4x6's and 61/2's to replace my stock speakers in my s-10 i was impressed with the improvment. The sound quility was exceptional, but i could tell the system definatley needed more. After some rather extensive research I decided to go with the Alpine cda-9847 as my deck, after installing a cheap 1000watt amp and 2 10' 1041swe subs, this system sounds incredible!! The best part for me was the fact that i still have less than 1000$ in my system and it just sounds unbelievable!! The clarity and quality even when the subs are pounding is just pure bliss!! I couldnt be happier with my purchase, I wasnt an Alpine man before, but I am definatly an Alpine kinda guy now. Thanks Crutchfield for all the wonderful information on your site, it really helped to make my purchase a smooth one. If im ever asked why i went with Alpine, all i have to do is open my truck door and let them listen. My coworkers are just beside themsleves with the quilty of sound from such a small investment. thanks again Crutchfield and Alpine!!!
Unfortunatley, just like most bass heads, this is only the beginning! There are plans in the works for a subbox behind the seats with 2 Alpine 12's and 2 Alpine 10's with 4or 6 6.5 components across the front with a couple amps hidden!! (awaitng the wifes permission of course)

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I replaced an older Aiwa CD receiver with the Alpine CDA-9847 I am completely happy with the clean power level, mp3 capability, and expandable to XM capability. the CD player does not skip even over frost heaves. the 9847 looks great and I like the dark chrome accents. The tuner is the best I have ever used. I would prefer an equalizer but once you get used to the center frequency adjustment you can tune the base and treble to match your system at the volume you prefer. Adding 6.5" speakers from Crutchfield let me use more of that great power.

WOW! I'M BLOW AWAY!!

Written By Albert Lee, Rochester, NY on Monday, May 23, 2005

I've owned several headunits, from JVC, Rockford Fosgate, and Pioneer. Nothing beats Alpine BBE headunit. I always thought Pioneer was the best in the market, with MOSFET. Boy, was I wrong. I purchase this unit, cuz my Pioneer DEH-5500MP was stolen. I'm so glad I purchased an Alpine. I even purchased an AUX cable to hook up my Ipod. I love this Alpine CDA-9847!!

Great but not perfect

Written By MJ, West Hills, CA on Friday, May 20, 2005

I have a 1990 Integra and my previous Kenwood worked fine, but I've become an iPod Maniac over the past few months and decided that I had to have it in my car NOW! I chose the 9847 because it seemed like it had the best user interface and value for the iPod. Once installed, I noticed the difference in sound quality right away. Radio & CDs sounded MUCH better without having to do any tweeking to the sound. The iPod interface sounds great too and the ability to control it is very easy to learn. However, there are a couple of improvements to the iPod user interface that I would look for in a future models: 1) I'm a "shuffle all songs" type and every time you turn off the vehicle, your settings are turned off which becomes annoying. 2) It would be cool if there was a setting for the display to AUTOMATICALLY scroll between artist, album & title. As it is now you have to pick ONE of those OR track time OR clock. 3) If I wasn't a "shuffle" guy it could theoretically take several minutes to choose a specific artist, album or song using the "rotary encoder" wheel. Unlike the iPod's scroll wheel, one click on the wheel = next one. If you try and spin it fast, it will still only advance to the next one. I probably have 1000 different artists on my iPod and if I wanted to play Nirvana, I would have to click that wheel approx. 500 times to find them. If Alpine somehow incorporated an alphanumeric search into it that would be cool. Meaning you could turn the wheel to "N", select it and only have to go through all the "N" artists. Bottom line: Other than those little nit-picky things, this unit is awesome.

Great for a Jeep

Written By hawleyrw, Dayton, OH on Saturday, May 14, 2005
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I purchased this as an upgraded HU for an '04 Jeep Wrangler (top up OR down). Fantastic sounding unit. I coupled this with Infinity Kappas in the front, and VDP 2-way pods in the rear (Quadratec) PLUS a Kenwood KSC-SW1 powered sub - for a totally awsome overall sound. The Alpine head does everything you want it too, lots of treb, bass and sub control, skips only if jolted hard, and just runs and cranks out the tunes. I'm running with XM, and it's awesome. Buy this unit.

Very Nice Unit

Written By Steve U, Roebuck, SC on Thursday, May 12, 2005
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I purchased this unit to replace my 12 year old Alpine in my 93 Ranger Super Cab. Up to this point I've been an Alpine diehard. Nothing has changed. This HU is very cool. After just a few minutes with the manual I was able to take full advantage of all the features packed into this unit. The 3 sets of pre-amps was what I wanted, the built in subwoofer control eliminates the need for a seperate amp control. I'm using it to control 4 Infinity 6x8's, and 2 Infinity 10's. They're being fed by a 4 channel Alpine amp, and a 2 channel Infinity amp. This is my favorite system to date. Alpine has done it again. They should include the remote with the unit, but spend the x-tra $20 and get it. Unit will only title 18 cd's, this needs to be increased alot, but still a very great unit.

Excellent performance and value

Written By Frank, Bakersfield, CA on Monday, April 25, 2005
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I think the Alipine CDA-9847 represents the best balance of performance and value out there. The signal sound quality, even without an amp, is quite impressive. It is not encumbered by unnecessary flashy animations. It plays CD-R, CD-RW, MP3 and WMA. It is compatible with the Alpine KCS-420i Ipod integration unit (I think it's the cheapest HU that has Ai-Net), and works quite well with it I must say. On top of that is is both XM and Sirius ready, so you can get into satellite radio without a seperate receiver on display, just the basic receiver and adapter boxes that can be hidden behind the dash, and this is cheaper than getting a whole seperate sat receiver. It does everything I could ask of a modern head unit, without all the flashy stuff, and it's 200 bucks. Not many models of any brand have all of that for that price, and great quality as well. I'm an alpine man now. They could have thrown the remote in though, without making it a seperate small purchase!

Great head unit

Written By Ed, Orlando, Fl on Thursday, April 07, 2005

I did a lot of research before I bought this head unit.
I have a 2002 Jeep Wrangler (top always down) that had a stock radio. I added new speakers last year, but it still did not sound good. I added the 9847 this week and what a difference. I would recomend this unit to anyone wanting to upgrade their system. Crutchfield was great, and the install was 45 minutes- start to finish!!!
The only drawbacks verse a higher priced unit is no remote, (it can be purchased seperately for about $15.00 bucks), and the outputs are only 2 volts vs 4 volts for amp.
For me and my Jeep, this was a great decision.

Sounds Great!!!!

Audi A4 w/ Bose

Written By Nik, Pittsburgh PA on Tuesday, April 05, 2005

I love my new Alpine 9847. My car originally had a Bose system in it, which I thought would be all that I could want...alas, the electrical system started to go on the fritz and I needed to either replace or fix it. After replacing it, I am very happy with my decision. I didn't think that the sound quality would get much better, but it did...noticeably! The only things that it is lacking in comparison to the bose system are the speed sensitive volume control and radio data system. My burned CD's and mp3 file CD's play perfectly.

Wow what an amazing product. Beats the factory one by 10X. Installing was kind of a b****. BUt after a 2 min call to tech support, everything worked fine. Took about an 2 hours because there are so many componets you have to dissemble in the chevy. Definately only buy from crutchfield. they included 88 dollars worth of free stuff for me. WIthouth them there is no way i could of done it. If you are looking for a quality deck for a quality price you have found your match.

Accord Install

Written By Andrew, New Jersey on Wednesday, March 09, 2005
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

After researching Head units for about six months I found that alpine was the best. I had a 200.00 to 300.00 dollar budget and after looking at all of the info this was the best HU for the money. After installing it I was right. It has all of the features that i needed and much more. I currently have it hooked up to stock door speakers and kenwood 6x9s in the rear and the sound is good. This HU has to much power for my speakers and I am buying Polk audio for my whole car. I am positive that i will not need an amp. This HU has more power than any one needs. The only thing i will need is a subwoofer and an amp for it. Crutchfield is definitly the best website to buy this from. They have [great] shipping and they also have the best price. I was very satisfied with crutchfield. I will be buying my speakers and anything else that i need from them.

You are using burned cd's. The Alpine is a high grade piece of audio equipment. Sometimes they can be sensitive to burned cd's as can all aftermarket and factory radios. I just purchased this unit and it works amazingly. The ipod controls are a wonderful edition to the 2005 models. You can find your songs by artist, playlist, album etc. This is the cheapest Alpine head unit you can buy that will work with the Alpine Kca-420i iPod adapter. Great value for the price!

Great HU

Written By Matt, Sarasota, Fl on Thursday, March 03, 2005

I purchased this HU to replace my stock BMW one and wow, what a great purchase. The install was easy and customer service was incredibly helpful and so valuable in helping me. My speaker are much clearer and the sound is just so crisp. I had never truly heard my Infinity Kappa's pumping out sound until now.

Installed in a 2000 F150 in about a half hour. Sounds great and CD hasn't skipped once, even over some pretty big bumps. It did take a liitle while to get the sound tweaked. All in all a good buy.

Skip city!

Written By Tonka, Dallas, TX on Wednesday, February 23, 2005

I updated my sound system with this head unit, went from an old Pioneer from 1996 to this new Alpine. The Pionner was out dated, no MP3, etc.. This Alpine has better preout voltage so why the heck not. Well put it is and definatly a better signal to my amps, but what good is it if all 50% of my CDs skip in it? Just to make sure it wasn't my CDs I went to a local store who sold Alpine, Pioneer, Kenood, etc.. The CDs skipped in EVERY Alpine model, most of the Kenwoods and NONE of the Pioneers. Needless to say this going in the trash for a Pioneer. Here I thought Alpine was better than most, WRONG! Buttons are also fragile and not as well planted as Pioneer or Eclipse. Just Seems and works CHEAP!

I installed this, along with the IPod adapter, in my 2002 Jeep Liberty in about an hour. The installation went perfectly, since all req'd. instructions & adapters were included. The sound is simply incredible compared to the stock radio. It's a very versatile radio due to all of the tweaking that you can do to get just the sound that you're looking for. The IPod interface works flawlessly. Now I can take all of my music with me! The fidelity is very impressive. It sounds light-years better than using an FM transmitter.

I have owned a Kenwood and a Panasonic, and it is rediculous how much richer this Alpine cda-9847 sounds. There is more room to play with the treble and bass without distorting the speakers. The sound is so crisp with great fluctuation. Plus, it is definitely a better looking stereo. My Panasonic took about 30-40 seconds to read an mp3 disk and this takes about 2-3 seconds. It is definitely worth it to order from Crutchfield since you get the free dash kit, wiring harness, and vehicle-specific install guide.

This is a great product. Puts out good sound to speakers and subs. Many adjustments so you can get the sound you desire. You can hook up an internal XM radio unit which does not give any static like a Roady.
