Alpine

Our take on the Alpine CDA-9883

Alpine Authorized Online Dealer

Alpine's CDA-9883 CD receiver powers your music with a high-powered internal amplifier. Your music will sound full-bodied and strong at normal listening levels, and you'll have the headroom to really crank the volume when you want to. You'll also find a stylish fold-down face, easy-to-use controls, and plenty of options for expanding your system.

Alpine's Bass Engine® feature lets you adjust the centerpoints of your treble and bass controls so you can really shape your tone. Three sets of preamp outputs provide connections for adding external amplifiers. If you have a subwoofer, Bass Engine's low-pass filter will keep the bass smooth and tight, while a high-pass filter ensures that your speakers aren't overloaded by too much bass.

Just add the optional iPod® connecting cable to activate Alpine's Full Speed controls for your iPod. You can also add a satellite radio, CD changer, or HD Radio™ tuner. Play it safe in your car with Alpine's optional Bluetooth® adapter, which creates a wireless interface for your cell phone or Bluetooth capable music player.

Features

CEA-2006 Compliant: The specifications given by Alpine for the built-in amplifier comply with the CEA-2006 mobile amplifier power testing and measurement standards from the CEA (Consumer Electronics Association). All manufacturers who comply with the standard can display the CEA-2006 logo on their product.

MP3/WMA/AAC Playback: This unit can play CD-ROM, CD-R, and CD-RW discs containing MP3, WMA, and AAC files recorded using the ISO 9660 Level 1 or Level 2 formats. MP3 files with bit rates from 8 kbps to 320 kbps, WMA files with bit rates from 48 kbps to 192 kbps, and AAC files with bit rates from 16 kbps to 320 kbps are supported. Variable bit rates are also compatible. Up to 510 files/folders and a maximum of 255 folders can be read from one disc. ID3 tags v1 and v2, and WMA tags are supported; track title, artist name, and album name ID3 tag data can be displayed.

Text/File/Folder Quick Search: When you're playing a disc with CD Text, ID3, or WMA tags, you can easily search for a track or file by its title. Once you have activated the search mode, you can use the rotary encoder to quickly scan through the titles to locate the desired track, and select it by pressing the play button.

Bass Engine: Bass Engine functions provide control over your system, so you can tailor the sound to your personal tastes. Bass Engine includes the following functions:

  • Bass Control:
    • Bass Center Frequency: 60Hz, 80Hz (default), 100Hz, or 200Hz
    • Bass Band Width (Q): Q1 (narrow), Q2, Q3, or Q4 (wide)
    • Bass Level: -7 to +7 (-14dB to +14dB in 2dB steps)
  • Treble Control:
    • Treble Center Frequency: 10kHz (default), 12.5kHz, 15kHz, or 17.5kHz
    • Treble Level: -7 to +7 (-14dB to +14dB in 2dB steps)

  • Loudness: on/off
  • Defeat On/Off: reset the unit to its factory default bass and treble settings by turning the Defeat function on

Power IC Off: When an external amplifier is powering all the speakers in the system, you can turn the internal amp off, which will improve the sound quality.

Subwoofer Pre-out: In addition to the front and rear preamp outputs, the CDA-9883 has a dedicated subwoofer output with a variable level of 0 to +15.

Dimmer: This unit is equipped with an illumination lead; when the unit's dimmer mode is set to Auto and the illumination lead is connected to your vehicle's headlight circuit, the display and button illumination will dim to a fixed, preset level whenever the headlights are turned on. If preferred, you may choose the Manual dimmer mode setting, so the display and button illumination is dim at all times.

Interrupt Feature: When a device having the interrupt feature (such as a cellular telephone) is connected to the receiver, the audio signal will be automatically muted whenever the interrupt signal is received from the device. The supplied wiring harness contains a pink/black Interrupt lead that needs to be connected to the device's interrupt signal connection.

Pleased with Alpine and Crutchfield

Written By Justin, NC, Gboro on Sunday, October 21, 2007
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)
Crutchfield Customer Review

The reviewer purchased this item from us, verified by the email address on the order.

My 03 Tacoma PreRunner DoubleCab decided to quit playing CDs it was a blessing in disguise. I found myself spending a lot of time searching on Crutchfield, reading all the reviews on Pioneer, Alpine, Kenwood, JVC and before long I had narrowed it down to just Alpine.

In my previous vehicle I upgraded a sony x-plod to a Pioneer DEHp-4800MP which was a great sounding HU. It was real easy when driving along to suddenly hit the knob and switch to radio. Like a fool I traded that car in and left the Pioneer in it. This time I decided to go for an Alpine.

I took a gamble and purchased it 'scratch and dent' for only $169.99 and 3 days later it arrived. The Alpine box was damaged (not the ups box) and the mount bracket had a small scratch, didn't need that part anyway - To my pleasant suprise the faceplate and rest of the unit seems to be MINT. Looks like the gamble paid off!

Install was easy, although I did run into a problem and was forced to mount the HU in the lower spot of the double din and have the cubby hole above it. It fit in the top spot fine but when putting back the dash is so close to the top of the HU that it prevents the open/close from flipping down.......I'm happy with it in the lower spot as I think there is less glare at night and it also is less likely to get washed out in sunlight.

As far as sound goes, wow it makes the stock speakers sound great. The HU is real easy to use and the adjustable bass, treble, loudness is great for tweaking the sound. After about 20 mins listening to some Matisyahu, reading the owners manual and getting used to the functions I am very pleased with it. I went to +5 on the bass with setting 2 for bass boost at 60hz seems to be best for my stock speakers and the treble is +2 at 12.5khz seems to sound the best. Then from there turning loudness on is an instant high! I wish I knew more about tuning stereos but I can imagine using amps and a woofer plus better speakers this thing would really rock!

The display looks great and the buttons all feal very solid. Plays CDs fine and the radio is fine. This HU looks much better in real life than in the pictures. My next purchase will have to be an iPod so I can get rid of the clutter of all my CDs - I have the iPod cable hooked up ready in the glove box so roll on Christmas!

Thanks Crutchfield!

I ordered this unit one evening at work and received it the next day which was amazing. I installed the unit on my '95 Porsche 993 cabriolet that evening and the install was easy and perfect. The wiring harness shipped was the correct one and all the wires were attached to the receiver without any difficulties. The red and yellow power wires on the receiver were not suppose to go into corresponding harness color so I called the tech. dept. 11 at night and he told me to swap it and all is well. I attached my 20 gig Ipod (about 3 years old) and voila, it works. The screen is clear and nice, the buttons very intuitive and the CD sound quality is great. I would highly recommned this unit and I can only imagine how good it would sound with an external 4 channel amp. I am using upgraded Boston Acounstic speakers but plan to replace the factory Nokia tweeters which are lame. If all companies, were like Crutchfield, we would have happier customers all over this country. Customer service is a dying breed. Thanks Crutchfield for your a great customer experience.

Was looking for a reasonably priced stereo for my 17yr old son's car that would have all the features he would want and this unit definitely fit the bill! Priced under $200 and including a free i-Pod cable made it an ideal choice, the sound and ease of installation made it perfect. Worked perfectly with his 20gig i-Pod color screen, worked even better with the brand new i-Pod touch screen. I was a little intimidated by having to connect the included wiring harness for his car to the radio's harness but the directions were very clear and easy to follow and I did it in about 20 minutes with no problems. Even with the 98 Corolla's factory speakers, the radio sounded great. Found out my son approved of the radio when I came home to find him showing it off to 2 of his friends the very next day!

Alpine CDA-9883

Crutchfield Customer Review

The reviewer purchased this item from us, verified by the email address on the order.

I have owned Alpine before and love the look and sound they provide. I put the CDA-9883 HU in my Mercedes Benz E-320 wagon with the ipod controller and after some initial figuring out of the functions I am very pleased with the unit. It makes the sound quality much better in my factory bose speakers. This was my first install ever and in fact I was planning on just trying it and if I ran into any problems I'd take it in to the shop and have it professionally done. Well, I saved close to $100 putting it in myself. The HU came out simply and the install went fine. I did have two issues with wiring (due to my car make) when I initially hooked up the system I had no sound. Well, tech support was able to guide me through hooking up the amp (the paper work said to leave the pink wire unconnected) then I had trouble with the presets and clock not holding after shut down of the engine. Apparently, this was common in my make car so I had to change some wires to fix the problem. I talked with two different tech people for these two problems and they were both excellent in helping me do this install. I am a female with no car stereo wiring knowledge but having Crutchfields tech support at my beck and call made installation easy. I will DEFINETLY use them again for my next purchase. Now I'm looking at replacing my HU in my 2001 Chevy Tahoe, I may even get the exact same unit for it.

I was very pleased when I installed my Alpine receiver. It sounded so great. I don't know how I listened to a stock radio so long. I was missing alot. The install instructions are the bomb! It was so easy to understand and they sent everything I would need to install this unit correctly. I will be sure to order some more audio equipment for my Toyota Tacoma truck.

Excellent product--excellent price

Written By Peter, Fairport NY on Monday, September 17, 2007

Went with Alpine as an emotional choice (had an Alpine head unit in an Alfa Romeo in England in the early 90s)--wanted to replace the cruddy unit in my Chevy Blazer and add iPod connectivity--this unit so rocks! The installation was really straightforward--the unit looks neat and sounds even better. The Boss thought I'd paid $ 600 to 700 and was gob smacked when I told her it was $ 199 all in--including the install kit, iPod cable and shipping. Next add ons are the Alpine HD receiver and a new iPod Classic!!

I knew I was going with Alpine when I was purchasing cause of the quality, my brother has used his Alpine stereo since 1990 and it just now bit the dust. Put this in my 94 Volvo with premium sound and it sounds even better. I now have ipod and love the features this unit has. I do not have any complaints and those that say they cant see the display in the sun is wrong, and anyways what regular HU can you actually see in direct sunlight.

Crutchfield Customer Review

I just installed this HU in my 2004 Mazda Tribute. It ended up being a bigger project than I expected! The design of the factory HU is challenging, to say the least, to remove from the dash. It has a double din design so you have 4 din tools to use to pull it out with. You have to be very careful in how you insert the tools into the slots, or you will end up bending the tabs that release the HU in the wrong direction. Which ended up happening to me. I ended up having to pull the dash apart, so I could get a screw driver into the side of the HU, to release the tabs, to get it out. Every other part of the installation was a breeze in comparison. Crutchfield did a great job of supplying everything I needed to install it for free. The din adapter, master sheet, wiring harness, din tools, and even included the ipod control cable. The only thing I had to get extra was some butt connectors to splice the wiring harness to the HU wiring. This was my second purchase from them, and I would definitley buy from them again. Now to the Alpine head unit. The only compaint I have about it is that the button to open the face plate to put a cd in is small, and makes it a challenge to push and pull it open at the same time with one hand. My main reason for getting it was to be able to hook my ipod up to it. I routed the included cable from the back of the HU to the glove box. So I can store the ipod in there and control it from the HU. It controls the ipod pretty well. It takes a little getting used to, but you can scroll through the artist, albums, playlists, etc., and select a song you want play pretty fast. It is not as fast as the ipod itself, but it gets the job done. The user interface is easy to operate and pretty intuitive. I was able to play with it and figure out most everything without reading the manual. It is much easier to use than the Kenwood deck I have in my Protege. I had to read the manual to figure out how to get it off demo mode to even get started with it! Anyways the Alpine HU was a great improvement over the factory HU. It has better power, sound quality, the ability to control my ipod, and many other features. I would strongly recommend this unit to anybody looking for a HU in this price range. You can't go wrong with it.
