Our take on the Alpine CDA-9883

by Robert Ferency-Viars
Alpine

Why replace your factory radio?

Two good reasons - sound quality and cool features. A new car stereo offers power that's superior to most factory radios, along with more sophisticated tone controls. And most car stereos offer built-in or optional features that add safety and fun to life in your car, including inputs for your iPod or MP3 player, Bluetooth connectivity for hands-free cell phone calls, satellite radio or HD Radio reception, and connections for building an audio system in your car.

Alpine Authorized Online Dealer

Alpine's CDA-9883 CD receiver powers your music with a high-powered internal amplifier. Your music will sound full-bodied and strong at normal listening levels, and you'll have the headroom to really crank the volume when you want to. You'll also find a stylish fold-down face, easy-to-use controls, and plenty of options for expanding your system.

Alpine's Bass Engine® feature lets you adjust the centerpoints of your treble and bass controls so you can really shape your tone. Three sets of preamp outputs provide connections for adding external amplifiers. If you have a subwoofer, Bass Engine's low-pass filter will keep the bass smooth and tight, while a high-pass filter ensures that your speakers aren't overloaded by too much bass.

Just add the optional iPod® connecting cable to activate Alpine's Full Speed controls for your iPod. You can also add a satellite radio, CD changer, or HD Radio™ tuner. Play it safe in your car with Alpine's optional Bluetooth® adapter, which creates a wireless interface for your cell phone or Bluetooth capable music player.

    Features

CEA-2006 Compliant: The specifications given by Alpine for the built-in amplifier comply with the CEA-2006 mobile amplifier power testing and measurement standards from the CEA (Consumer Electronics Association). All manufacturers who comply with the standard can display the CEA-2006 logo on their product.

MP3/WMA/AAC Playback: This unit can play CD-ROM, CD-R, and CD-RW discs containing MP3, WMA, and AAC files recorded using the ISO 9660 Level 1 or Level 2 formats. MP3 files with bit rates from 8 kbps to 320 kbps, WMA files with bit rates from 48 kbps to 192 kbps, and AAC files with bit rates from 16 kbps to 320 kbps are supported. Variable bit rates are also compatible. Up to 510 files/folders and a maximum of 255 folders can be read from one disc. ID3 tags v1 and v2, and WMA tags are supported; track title, artist name, and album name ID3 tag data can be displayed.

Text/File/Folder Quick Search: When you're playing a disc with CD Text, ID3, or WMA tags, you can easily search for a track or file by its title. Once you have activated the search mode, you can use the rotary encoder to quickly scan through the titles to locate the desired track, and select it by pressing the play button.

Bass Engine: Bass Engine functions provide control over your system, so you can tailor the sound to your personal tastes. Bass Engine includes the following functions:

    • Bass Control:
      • Bass Center Frequency: 60Hz, 80Hz (default), 100Hz, or 200Hz
      • Bass Band Width (Q): Q1 (narrow), Q2, Q3, or Q4 (wide)
      • Bass Level: -7 to +7 (-14dB to +14dB in 2dB steps)
    • Treble Control:
      • Treble Center Frequency: 10kHz (default), 12.5kHz, 15kHz, or 17.5kHz
      • Treble Level: -7 to +7 (-14dB to +14dB in 2dB steps)
    • High Pass Filter (HPF): speaker level and preamp outputs (other than the subwoofer output) have a selectable crossover (HPF); off (default), 80Hz, 120Hz, or 160Hz
    • Loudness: on/off
    • Defeat On/Off: reset the unit to its factory default bass and treble settings by turning the Defeat function on

Power IC Off: When an external amplifier is powering all the speakers in the system, you can turn the internal amp off, which will improve the sound quality.

Subwoofer Pre-out: In addition to the front and rear preamp outputs, the CDA-9883 has a dedicated subwoofer output with a variable level of 0 to +15.

Dimmer: This unit is equipped with an illumination lead; when the unit's dimmer mode is set to Auto and the illumination lead is connected to your vehicle's headlight circuit, the display and button illumination will dim to a fixed, preset level whenever the headlights are turned on. If preferred, you may choose the Manual dimmer mode setting, so the display and button illumination is dim at all times.

Interrupt Feature: When a device having the interrupt feature (such as a cellular telephone) is connected to the receiver, the audio signal will be automatically muted whenever the interrupt signal is received from the device. The supplied wiring harness contains a pink/black Interrupt lead that needs to be connected to the device's interrupt signal connection.

Angle Mounting: Alpine recommends mounting the CDA-9883 no more that 35° above horizontal.

Wireless Remote: The CDA-9883 is compatible with the optional RUE-4202 wireless remote control (item number 500RUE4202) or RUE-4190 (item number 500RUE4910). The unit has a remote control sensor on the upper right corner of the faceplate.

Steering Wheel Remote Compatibility: The CDA-9883 has a steering remote control input on the back panel. When used with the optional SWI-JACK interface (item number 127SWIJACK), you can retain the use of your factory steering wheel and/or rear seat radio controls when replacing the factory head unit in select vehicles. The SWI-JACK is compatible with over 95% of the vehicles made from 1986 to the present. Compatible vehicles include many Acura, Audi, BMW, Buick, Cadillac, Chevrolet, Chrysler, Dodge, Ford, GMC, Honda, Hummer, Infiniti, Isuzu, Jaguar, Jeep, Kia, Land Rover, Lexus, Lincoln, Mazda, Mercury, Mini, Mitsubishi, Nissan, Oldsmobile, Plymouth, Pontiac, Saab, Saturn, Suzuki, Toyota, and Volkswagens and Harley Davidson motorcycles. Please consult "What Fits My Car" to see if your vehicle is compatible.

Optional Auxiliary Input: With the optional KCA-121B Ai-NET/RCA interface cable or KCA-410C Versatile Link Terminal, you can input audio from an auxiliary source unit, such as a TV, VCR or portable unit.

Changer Name: You can change the name on the display to match the type of device connected to the CD changer input; Changer, USB, or Portable.

Clock Operation: This unit allows you to choose "keyed" or "unit on" clock operation. When the clock has been given display priority and the unit is turned off, the clock will be displayed whenever the ignition key is in the "on" or "accessory" position. If the clock is not given display priority, the clock is not displayed when the unit is off.

    External Device Controls

USB Adapter Ready: With the optional KCA-620M USB adapter (item number 500KCA620M), you can connect and control MP3 players that have USB connections. In addition, if you have MP3s stored on a USB thumb drive, you can select and play those files from the head unit.

Shoulda stuck with my original choice

Written By AH, Goodyear, AZ on Monday, January 26, 2009
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I originally had a JVC unit in my cart, and on a whim, decided to go with this Alpine, the 9883. I chose it becasue it was cheaper and came with all the stuff, to include the IPOD cable. I never ended up using the cable, so, it even more disappointing. Needless to say, this player has a lot of extras, , nothing for the run-of-the-mill guy like me who just wanted a player for his IPOD, btw, it never recognized when my IPOD was connected. Shortly after the install, which was less than fun with running a separate power wire for it, the player started kicking out CD read errors. I take very good care of my CDs, one of the few things I take great pride in keeping clean. Needless to say, it kept going, at least 10 CDs wouldn't play , either at all or just stop halfway through a song. None of these were CDrs or CDrws. My latest experience has a new CD stuck/jammed, in the deck. It not only stopped mid song, but won't eject it either.

Needless to say, Alpine is off the list for me. Thanks but no thanks, lots of great options, low on quality from this experience. The good thing is, Crutchfield was more than helpful with installation issues, and just general shipping time, selection, etc. I would neveer shop anywhere else unless I was really in a hurry. No knocks against Crutchfield.

    Mute button woes

Written By Kelly, Litchfield, CT on Wednesday, October 29, 2008
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

First I will say Alpine makes a great product and the head unit is no
exception. The control this h/u gives me over my Type R sub and my CDT
component speakers is incredibly dynamic. That said there are occasions I
reach over to mute the music and I hit the "search/esc" button by accident.
It's no wonder this unit was quickly discontinued and replaced with a model
featuring the "search/esc" button nowhere near the mute. Overall I am
very pleased with this units, but I have had a few business calls where I
ended up embarassed and it has made me wonder if it might be time to
    upgrade to a newer model.

    Alpine all the way

Written By Blazer984, MA on Friday, August 15, 2008

I love Alpine. This deck powers my 4 type S speakers nicely. I also got an alpine
amp hooked up to it with a Type R sub. Love the whole package. This deck has a
lot of great control features like the iPod controlling and the subwoofer control.
Great display, looks great. All around an awesome product. Another A+ for Alpine.

    Great System!

Written By Jeff, Martinez, CA on Saturday, February 23, 2008
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I did a lot of shopping for a system -- head unit, iPod and satellite; both online and at 'brick and mortar' stores. Crutchfield had the biggest selection, the best prices AND the best overall package (free iPod cable, free dash kit, free wiring harness). I've never even thought of attempting to install a system myself, but I decided to give it a shot. With the great Master Sheet instructions, the installation was flawless -- and surprisingly easy. Wiring the harness to the head unit was the hardest part for me, but with patience and a couple of calls to Crutchfield support when I had questions (they were VERY knowledgeable and helpful), it worked great! The system surpassed my expectations. The iPod and SAT controls are first-rate, and the system looks and sounds great with my existing factory speakers. I would HIGHLY recommend this Alpine system, AND buying it from Crutchfield!

    Nice deck for price

Written By Corey, Moorhead, MN on Friday, February 22, 2008

Ordered this deck to work with Ipod. Deck looks and sounds great, but the Ipod controls on the deck are very confusing and you can't contol from the Ipod itself. Over all Crutchfield experience was great as always.

Excellent price for this cd receiver with ipod capabilities. I bought the radio, had it installed in my daughter's car and it works and fits perfectly. The ipod capabilites are the reason that I bought this model. It's like an ipod on the dash and there are 10,000 songs on the ipod. Excellent sound. Highly recommended.
    Thank you Crutchfield.

    Alpine 9883 Receiver

Written By Wyatt, Kingman, AZ on Tuesday, February 19, 2008
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I purchased this unit for my father-in-law and installed it in his 2005 Chevy pickup. Instructions and tech support were first-rate (as always) from Crutchfield. This was a replacement for the factory installed CD/Cassette receiver which was not capable of playing MP3s. My father-in-law is tickled to death with the unit. I highly recommend this receiver to anyone with similar needs.

iPod Deck - Close but not quite

Written By Zach, Bend, OR on Wednesday, February 13, 2008
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I got this deck after quite a bit of research looking for an iPod controlling deck.
I think this deck sounds great, and looks good. I particularly like the advanced bass and treble controls, which let you not just set the levels of each, but the center frequency and range (range on bass only). This takes what looks like rudimentary tone controls, and get functionality closer to a seven-band EQ... One part of this EQ setup that I find particularly helpful is that if you are using stock speakers, or at least don't have a sub, you can move the center frequency of the bass to a somewhat higher frequency, and then turn up the bass. Stock type speakers have a much easier time handling this without distorting, rattling, etc.

    On the iPod:
this deck works pretty well controlling the iPod. The interface takes a little getting used to. From what I've read, however, Alpine has one of the best iPod interfaces. I've read there are a lot of bad interfaces out there (most of them). The only quirk: You have to turn off shuffle play on the deck before you can browse playlists/artists/etc. WHY!? So the sequence is, turn shuffle off, select playlist, turn shuffle back on. Stupid, Annoying, and gives the deck 4 stars instead of 5. If I were to try again, I'd try some of the new pioneer decks, which are looking pretty good for ipod interfaces.

    Great sound system

Written By Michael, Edgewood, Ky on Sunday, February 10, 2008
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Bought for my son so could hook up his ipod and allowed easy connection to a Kenwood powered subwoofer. At same time, replaced the original 4 speakers in 97 Avalon. Following the superb instructions and knowledgable tech support was able to install. Made a great father and son project. When was initially installing the head unit, the adaptor wouldn't fit and this was due to my not realizing I had a 6 speaker system(1 tinyl tweeter in each door). The tech sent me the correct adapter for no extra charge and recieved within a few days. Can't say enough for this type of support and am definately committed to Crutchfield for future purchases.

A great receiver with options to expand

Written By Dr. Claw, Parts Unknown, OH on Friday, February 08, 2008

I've been itching to own a latter-day Alpine head unit since discovering its superb handling of the iPod (via the KCE-422i cable that Crutchfield supplied free). While its full-speed (truth in advertising) iPod control is a highlight, this CD unit, unlike some other models that are similar, has many options for expansion (Satellite/HD radio, CD Changer, etc). The sound is nothing short of the quality Alpine has delivered for years as a leader in its field.

I moved from a Sony setup (XR-CA350X + XA-C40 splitter + CDX-757MX + XA-110IP, also courtesy of Crutchfield) to an-all Alpine deal (including their CHA-S634 changer), and I'm not looking back. The more recent (and expensive) models like the 9885 and 9886 may have more bells and whistles, but you're not losing much with the 9883. The only knock on it is some aspects of iPod control (but the speed makes up for it) and less than intuitive controls. Well worth the buy!

    Great

Written By David, Florida on Thursday, February 07, 2008
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I was a bit nervous about the look of this unit from the picture they have here on Crutchfield, but I was pleasantly surprised to find the picture does not do it justice. The 9883 is a beautifully sleek unit that feels very durable in your hands and not at all flimsy like so many HU's today. There is no cheap, chrome plastic or obscure buttons. It's all pretty straight forward and looks great when installed.

The installation was amazingly easy. I'm a pretty technical guy and I was surprised at how smooth the installation went. All you need is some basic skills such as soldering and the ability to turn a screw and you're set. Even if you're not the technical sort, Crutchfield's instructions are very easy to follow, accurate and vehicle specific. The best part is that they give you everything you need to do the job right for FREE (most places charge for them ie: mounting hardware, wiring harness, iPod cable). Definitely would not pay some yahoo $100 to install it.

After it was installed the sound quality was noticably improved. Where my old HU struggled to maintain its sound this one does so without breaking a sweat. The 9883 is easy to use. The iPod controls are a little different than might be expected, but they are easy to learn and pretty logical.

Overall I love this HU and would highly recomend it. It looks, works, and sounds great.

This is my 3rd Alpine HU I have installed, Alpine has done it again. I put it my 07 Wrangler, crutchfield made it easy again with the proper wire harness and bracket. I have this set up with Polk 650's. Over all the sound is amazing. The iPod set up took about 10 min to get used to. I also have my XM set up with this. I would recomend this unit to anyone. My next purchase will be a powered sub to bring out the bass.

Was kinda worried about taking out my factory Monsoon radio in my 2004 VW Passat. Had head many horror stories of what needed to be done to get HU's to work with the factory speakers and sub. Was quite impressed with the wiring harness and instructions as to the ease of install. In about 20 mins I was up and runnning and the sound was great. Hats off to the CF team for making it so easy. Also for making it easy to get a good head unit to work with a system that it was not supposed to work with. Thanks Again!!!

Paid for install. My last install was a FM converter. Thought this unit was garbage, couldn't get a good sound and couldn't figure out all the controls. Kept calling Crutchfield to explain stuff. The guys were great! They wanted me to be happy and handled my learning curve without laughing. After many hours of study I found the HPF (high pass filter) and turned the dumb thing off. I now have a sound that is beyond belief! I have a mercedes with a bose speaker system that sounds better than any live concert I've attended. Thanks for all the help,I'm still smiling.

I recently bought this Alpine 9883 receiver from Crutchfield for my 2005 Nissan Altima and the sound quality really ROCKs. The learning curve for operating this system is less and that is a huge plus against pioneer systems. If you have not bought Alpine in the past - Give it a try - it is absolutely worth the money. Cheers

I have had several Alpine receivers in the past and all of them have been great including this one! All the controls are easy to use and find. The high speed I-Pod adapter works awesome. The only thing I have a slight problem with is the detachable face plate, which takes a while to get hang of snapping it back into place. Other than that the receiver is great and would highly recommend.

    Great Product, Amazing Price

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The Alpine CDA-9883 is a great head unit all around. Its easy to install, sounds great, functions properly, and doesn't lack in the cosmetics department!

The installation was about as straightforward as it can get. All of the wires in the harness are clearly labeled, and the head unit slid in with no problems. I have never had any problems installing head units in the past, and this one was no different.

Cosmetically, I have seen very few head units that are as appealing as this one. The photo on CF doesn't give it justice. Unlike most other HU's, this one seems to really complement the car. It isn't really flashy and cramped like most other designs. It looks very clean and sharp. Although you can tell it is an aftermarket HU, it oddly seems like it was made just for your car.

The iPod functions of the 9883 are seemingly perfect. Every iPod I have tried with the dedicated iPod interface has worked seamlessly. The 5th gen video, 5.5 gen video, and 6th gen classic all work great. I was a little worried that because my new 6th gen iPod Classic had just been releasd that it might not work, but I haven't had any problems at all. The sound quality of the iPod interface is incredibly higher than any auxiliary input I have ever heard. I was also worried that controlling the iPod through the HU would be hard to get used to. Well, it wasn't at all. Within 5 minutes of just playing around, I had already mastered the iPod controls, without the need of referring to the manual. They are just as simple as the iPod itself. Scrolling through artists and songs is very fast, there is no lag at all.

While the radio reception is just a tad bit weaker than my factory HU, the stations that come in strong sound so clear it is almost difficult to distinguish radio from CD. And that is without the HD Tuner. For the price of this unit, you really get what you pay for.

Overall, a very good product that I would recommend to everyone.

I love the product!!! The transaction through Crutchfield was supurb and professional.
The only reason I gave it a 4 and not a 5 is for a purely superficial reason: I just wish the face plate had the ability to change its color. I'm not the biggest fan of the red, white and blue....although I am a fan of my country :-).

Great Product and Amazing Sound for the price

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Installed this product on a honda civic 2008 and there is tremendous difference in the sound with factory speakers itself. Civic's stock stereo was a piece of junk did not provide enough power to rear speakers. As ususal Crutchfield shipped it to me in a day. Also gave me the difference after the price break.

The sound is phenomenal with Ipod and CD's. There is no comparison with factory stuff. The reason i am giving 4 is because FM signal is weak. At places it give me huge static and also reception is not as powerful as my factory radio. I am mostly in the Northern Virginia area when i get static. Another issues with Civics 2008 is that radio console is mounted at an angle so it is hard to see the display in bright sunlight and also from the back seat during nights. Ipod controls are good and only issue with that i have is with the search feature. If you use search feature you always have to narrow down to a song. You cannot make it play all the songs for a particular artist, album, genre etc.

Crutchfield sent me all the instructions to install factory radio and me and my buddy completed the work on our own. Will always buy from crutchfield.

05 Canyon Install - Awesome Sound & Operations

Written By nate, Nashville, NC on Monday, January 21, 2008
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Installation - Didn't have a bit of trouble installing this deck with the Crutchfield master sheet sent. If you have either the Colorado or Canyon - I recommend getting the GM Chimes component. I also recommend purchasing the panel tool. I was able to pull the front panel and replace all 4 of my factory speakers in my extended cab without any trouble. The factory deck has a plastic piece that just slides in a hole in the back to aid in back end support. I used this with the Alpine deck as well because I didn't like it being supported from just the plastic front mount sent. I got a metal strip from the local auto parts store for about $2 and cut to fit. Screwed in the metal strip into the hole on the Alpine deck and used a 5mm screw to attach the plastic piece. The deck slid right in and the plastic piece aligned up with the hole. Drilling of two holes in the metal strip was required for this solution.

Operations - It's loaded with more features than I will ever use. I thought at first that the pop down control panel was going to be a pain to load and unload CDs. I was wrong. This is a very easy interface to swap CDs around and I love the fact I can pop the front panel off and secure it elsewhere to discourage thieves.

Sound - I'm not using an amplifier. I'm just using the built in features of this deck and it is way more than I will ever use. I'm also running 4 Alpine 5 1/4 speakers. The highs, mids, and upper lows stand out. You can actually hear the different instruments in the music. I couldn't have been more pleased with the sounds this deck pumps out with the Alpine speakers. I'm looking forward to the addition of my subwoofer. The deck has built-in controls and RCA connectors just for the subwoofer. Once I get the lows into the mix, I think I will have one kick butt stereo system for less than $600. With the help from Crutchfield you can do it yourself without breaking the bank.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This is a very nice stero. The sound is great and the price reasonable. The only negative is that the MP3 connector is only for an iPod and does not accomodate any other type of MP3 player unless you purchase another $100 adapter. This was a little dissappointing. The flip down front is a very nice feature and the colored lights on the front panel are attractive. The best part about ordering from Crutchfield is that all of the components you need to install it come with the unit. This is a huge plus. Thanks for a great product!

I've owned four Alpine CD receivers, including this one, with not a single problem and outstanding performance in each. This and another unit were purchased to upgrade to iPod interface capability, which is like having a portable CD changer. My Corvette has no room for an on-board changer unit, so this is a wonderful feature. As far as I know, Alpine was the first to offer this capability, and continue their tradition of quality and functionality.

    Great Unit and Awesome service

Written By Joshua, Lewes, DE on Friday, January 11, 2008

This is the first Alpine unit I've owned/installed. The wiring/install kit from Crutchfield was awesome. I soldered the wiring harness on my lunch break and installed the stereo that night outside. The entire install took less than 30 minutes. The iPod interface worked great right from the start, it just sits down out of sight in one of the enclosed cubby holes in the Altima.

PRICE: I found it cheaper from other retailers, but by the time you added in the install kit, wiring harness, shipping costs, and iPod interface cable, Crutchfield came out the clear winner.

PROS: Great sound, nice appearance, effective iPod interfacing, nice display, very expandable

CONS: Alpine's control layout (main gripe is the wheel, I would prefer pressing the wheel as the enter function, not the audio menu). iPod interface - the buttons could be setup a little more like the iPod controls, since there is a wheel, but they aren't. I guess I'll get used to them, but when I HAVE to read the instructions to figure it out, it's too complicated IMO. Radio: the seek function is a bit complicated and stations don't come in as clear as the OEM radio.

Concern: I'm not sure this is a con since it could be a mistake on my part, but the steering wheel controls for the display computer (elapsed timer, trip mileage, outside temp, etc) stopped working after the stereo install. I didn't notice any mention of this in the instructions or manual.

Overall: great product and service with some minor gripes (which are mostly personal opinions and not legitimate problems)

i got a pioneer head unit for Christmas, got to install it early so i was excited. To my dismay about 2 weeks later my manager and i went to my truck to see how it sounds. then out of nowhere i started getting very loud annoying engine and alternator whines through my subs! Then i called crutchfield technical support and we spent hours trying to figure out the source. we finally narrowed it down to a defective deck. So i got this one as a replacement. Oh my does it sound SOOOOO much better. i recommend this head unit over anyone that ive had. The sound quality is amazing. The high speed ipod cable comes in handy too. so if your looking for an amazing sound quality for an extremely good price i recommended this unit.

I purchased this unit to replace my factory HU in my 2005 Silverado. This was my first time with Alpine products, I usually purchase Pioneer, and I am very glad I didn't! Install was a snap! Thanks to Crutchfield, everything was included. I do not own an ipod, but the free ipod cable persuaded me to buy myself one. This deck has a clean modern appearance, with SQ to match. No cheezy gadgets. Overall, the SQ in my truck has improved 10 fold. I will always buy Alpine from now on!

    Great, with cons

Written By front, nw indiana on Tuesday, January 01, 2008

first off, i think this is a great reciever, and i'm happy with my purchase, it's just that i had to do some sound-shaping to get it to sound like i want it to sound. when i first installed it, it sounded muffled, like it was missing something...it took me hours (at least 5) of driving around and messing with the sound until i got that crisp kick back in my jams...i put the bass at 60hz at setting 1, the treble at 17.5, and the high pass filter all the way up at 120hz...as i thought, as you would think, having the bass set at low would improve the kick, but after hours of configuring these settings are the only way i get the "kick" back
otherwise, the faceplate is well made, with the lights mixing together nicely, and the knob strong like steel...
i don't do subwoofers but if you do, this unit is really great and has features that help utilize a sub to it's maximum potential

We bought our first one back in October for my wife's Altima. We loved everything about it, especially the ability to have both an aux. input and an iPod connected. The controls work well and the sound is excellent. When the illumination died on the Panasonic HU in my Miata, my wife surprised me with another 9883 for Christmas. It installed in about 10 minutes and sounds amazing. Lots more power than the Panasonic and it is nice having the same controls in both cars - no learning curve. Highly recommended.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I love Alpine Products. They work, and they work well.

The Special Edition stock radio in my 2005 Civic gave up and I was only getting audio out of the left channel. Knowing that a replacement stock radio was going to be expensive, I took at look on Crutchfield.

I had played with this one in some stores and liked the way it worked. So I decided to buy it. Crutchfield has the best price by far of anywhere out there. They send everything you need, and I mean everything.

As far as the radio goes, the sound is amazing. Using stock Honda speakers, it sounds like it just put new ones in. The controls are easy to use, but iPod/iPhone controls take a little getting used to. It does work with the iPhone, and that was my main reason for buying this. The controls for this HU are better than that of stock Scion radios.

FYI - If you have a 2005 Civic "SPECIAL EDITION" you need the Metra 99-7898 dash kit. The one that is sent does not fit the special edition dash.

My overall experience with this Alpine receiver is very positive. I changed over my stock receiver and speakers to the Alpine 9883 and some polk speakers and it has made a HUGE difference. I like the bass power boost and the overall sound quality produced. The main control knob is very easy to use ;however, I find the rest of the buttons kind of small and hard to read. The ipod interface is good but not as easy to use as on the ipod itself. I do wish Alpine would also give the receiver an aux jack as another option.

    Nice head unit

Written By Richie, North Port, FL on Thursday, December 06, 2007
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I have used Alpine components in most of my vehicles since 1986 and have never been let down. The CDA-9883 is well built and easy to install. The iPod controls are the main reason I bought this. I installed it in my 07 Ford Edge in about 15 minutes. Combined with some new Infinity 5x8's this is a vast improvement over the clock radio sounding factory set-up. My only negative comment is that it only has 2V preamp outputs. That would have been a determing factor in not buying this head unit had I planned to add amps. But as this is a lease vehicle I am just keeping it simple. You need to step up to the CDA-9885 for the 4V preamp outputs. If you are looking for a great sounding head unit with iPod controls you can't go wrong for the money. Crutchfield threw in the KCE-422i iPod cable. Combined with the free mounting kit, harness, antenna adapter and shipping it was a great value.

    Dimming control

Written By Michael, Big Lake Alaska on Thursday, December 06, 2007
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I have only one complaint for this product, and its the same complaint I have had for several other similar products of different manufacturers, and that is in the dimming circuit. I would like to be able to dim the device with the headlight dimmer which controls all the other panel lights, this particular stereo only dims the unit when you turn on the headlights, and to a preset amount of dim. When I am driving at night, I want the stereo to be no brighter than the other panel lights, and other steros have annoyed me to the point of taping some paper over them. In this particular application, (a 1988 full size blazer), my arm can cover up the light from the display, so its no big deal, but it would be nice to adjust it to whatever you want. I may sound like I am whining, but in the country when there is very low light, the panel lights can be very distracting and annoying.

All I can say is WOW!!! I picked up this cd player for my lancer after a crutchfield rep recommended it because I planned on using the IPOD with it and once I got it put in, it was easy to control and set up! The IPOD interface is quick and actually prefer it to using the scroll wheel and there is no lag time like in other receivers. Also the power this thing has is amazing! I have polk interior speakers and 2 10in rockfords and they pound better now! I had a pinoeer headunit before this one and it was nice, but the soun has definately improved with this unit! Pick it up, you wont be disappointed!

Seriously if your on a budget and dont need a bunch of fancy stuff on your deck then consider this one. Also i had no idea how to take the stock stereo out of my Mitsubishi Lancer... but crutch field sent me instructions with pictures.. seriously it took me maybe 10 minutes to actually install. Very Nice receiver. I purchased this after first buying my wife a jvc for her civic. The Jvc would not recognize either of our ipod's even though the firmware was up to date on both. Plus the Jvc did not sound good at all. So with good luck with alpine in the past, I returned the jvc and got this alpine. Right out of the box it sounds great. Good overall sound control with the bass engine controls. And no problems with the Ipod's being recognized either. We have an old ipod mini and the first gen nano and both work flawlessly. Once again alpine has won my praise. Great deck, good price, and great sound, you won't be disappointed with this purchase.

    Great stereo

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I got this HU a few days ago and after playing with most of its features i would say its the best $199 i have put into my car! I plan to replace the stock speakers in my 01 Escape but for now they sound amazing! I was worried about it lacking bass response due to some other reviews, but for me, as bass guitar player, it has more than enough! Sometimes i have to turn it to -1! Install was easy thanks to crutchfield and everything feels solid. Over all this unit has enough features for me, a very detailed person, but isn't over whelming when it comes to complexity. I read through the manual once and had about 90% of it down and the rest comes with time. iPod controls are good, but i do wish as others have stated that it would remember the last menu item instead of going all the way back. If your not ready to buy this minuet you might want to wait for the newer CDA-9884 coming the end of this month, it might have some updates on interface. It looks a little cooler too. I would recommend this unit to anyone in a heart beat, no worries here!

I have always liked Alpine stereo's but never had one. This is my first one. I put this in my truck with the free ipod adapter and I love it. I will probably get one for my wifes car to. The only downside is the controlls for the ipod interface but I know if you pay just a bit more and get the next model up it takes care of those issues. I would recomend this highly if your not bugged by the way you access the songs on you ipod.

    Great receiver esp. for iPod

Written By William, Pittsburgh, PA on Friday, November 09, 2007
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

First of all I am going with Crutchfield for all of my car audio needs from now on. My package arrived in two days (with free shipping). Everything was included (i.e. wiring harness, mounting kit, master sheet for my car (1997 Dodge Avenger), even the iPod cable) for no extra cost. You may be able to find the base cost of this stereo cheaper somewhere else, but you'll end up paying a lot more for it when all is said and done and you won't get the great service that Crutchfield provides.

Before purchasing this unit, I had my iPod (5th gen. 30gb) hooked up to my factory stereo using an FM transmitter. I got tired of the static and general poor sound quality. The Alpine receiver itself is fantastic. I read a lot of reviews on different receivers for around the $200 range. I mainly wanted something that had clear sound and good iPod controls. This unit does not dissapoint. In fact, it actually performs better than expected. Reviews for some other units complained about poor iPod controls, either being too slow or awkward or both. Not here. I have to say this unit responds just as fast as the iPod itself. And I think it is even easier to control my iPod going through this receiver than using the iPod directly. For instance if I want to use shuffle play all I have to do now is hit one button. That task is no where near as simple on the iPod. I can use a percentage search by pushing the presets. They each take me through a certain percentage of my library so I don't have to start at the beginning. I can also search for songs just as I would on the iPod too. The volume knob acts like the scroll wheel. I found the whole thing very easy to use and I've only had it for a few days, barely even looking at the manual.

As for the sound, it is very clear with some decent power. Miles ahead of the old factory radio that was in my car. I'm still using the factory speakers, may change them down the road. But the improvement in sound right now is enough to keep me going for a while. I'm sure adding an amp would give it some better power. But I really didn't want to get into all of that.

Intallation was a breeze. I have very limited experience with car stereos. But using the master sheets for my car and the installation kit that was provided I had the whole thing up and running from start to finish in about an hour. I made the connections to the wiring harness and the alterations to the mounting kit in my home. Then it was just a matter of pulling out the old and sliding in the new. The biggest problem I had was the wires were getting bunched up in the back and not allowing me to push the unit all the way in. After getting my hands in there and positioning the wires better, the unit went in nice and easy with a little click at the end. Very nice.

If you are in the market for a new car stereo, get this one and get it from Cruthfield. You'll be glad you did.

I just had this receiver installed less than 24 hours and I'm already loving it. I purchased this mainly for the IPOD controls. Compared to other brands, Alpine's search features are very accurate specially if you have a playlist already created. I didn't need the 4v connections compared to the 9985 model and I'm even using my Mini Cooper's factory speakers. Also having all of the accessories included in the purchase price is also a PLUS! Thanks Crutchfield.

Great Head Unit for your money!

Written By Aaron, Hamilton, MT on Saturday, November 03, 2007
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I just installed this HU in my 2004 Mazda Tribute. It ended up being a bigger project than I expected! The design of the factory HU is challenging, to say the least, to remove from the dash. It has a double din design so you have 4 din tools to use to pull it out with. You have to be very careful in how you insert the tools into the slots, or you will end up bending the tabs that release the HU in the wrong direction. Which ended up happening to me. I ended up having to pull the dash apart, so I could get a screw driver into the side of the HU, to release the tabs, to get it out. Every other part of the installation was a breeze in comparison. Crutchfield did a great job of supplying everything I needed to install it for free. The din adapter, master sheet, wiring harness, din tools, and even included the ipod control cable. The only thing I had to get extra was some butt connectors to splice the wiring harness to the HU wiring. This was my second purchase from them, and I would definitley buy from them again. Now to the Alpine head unit. The only compaint I have about it is that the button to open the face plate to put a cd in is small, and makes it a challenge to push and pull it open at the same time with one hand. My main reason for getting it was to be able to hook my ipod up to it. I routed the included cable from the back of the HU to the glove box. So I can store the ipod in there and control it from the HU. It controls the ipod pretty well. It takes a little getting used to, but you can scroll through the artist, albums, playlists, etc., and select a song you want play pretty fast. It is not as fast as the ipod itself, but it gets the job done. The user interface is easy to operate and pretty intuitive. I was able to play with it and figure out most everything without reading the manual. It is much easier to use than the Kenwood deck I have in my Protege. I had to read the manual to figure out how to get it off demo mode to even get started with it! Anyways the Alpine HU was a great improvement over the factory HU. It has better power, sound quality, the ability to control my ipod, and many other features. I would strongly recommend this unit to anybody looking for a HU in this price range. You can't go wrong with it.

    17 yr old son approved!

Written By Jason, Elkton, MD on Tuesday, October 30, 2007
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Was looking for a reasonably priced stereo for my 17yr old son's car that would have all the features he would want and this unit definitely fit the bill! Priced under $200 and including a free i-Pod cable made it an ideal choice, the sound and ease of installation made it perfect. Worked perfectly with his 20gig i-Pod color screen, worked even better with the brand new i-Pod touch screen. I was a little intimidated by having to connect the included wiring harness for his car to the radio's harness but the directions were very clear and easy to follow and I did it in about 20 minutes with no problems. Even with the 98 Corolla's factory speakers, the radio sounded great. Found out my son approved of the radio when I came home to find him showing it off to 2 of his friends the very next day!

    Alpine CDA-9883

Written By Angie, Spokane, Washington on Tuesday, October 30, 2007
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I have owned Alpine before and love the look and sound they provide. I put the CDA-9883 HU in my Mercedes Benz E-320 wagon with the ipod controller and after some initial figuring out of the functions I am very pleased with the unit. It makes the sound quality much better in my factory bose speakers. This was my first install ever and in fact I was planning on just trying it and if I ran into any problems I'd take it in to the shop and have it professionally done. Well, I saved close to $100 putting it in myself. The HU came out simply and the install went fine. I did have two issues with wiring (due to my car make) when I initially hooked up the system I had no sound. Well, tech support was able to guide me through hooking up the amp (the paper work said to leave the pink wire unconnected) then I had trouble with the presets and clock not holding after shut down of the engine. Apparently, this was common in my make car so I had to change some wires to fix the problem. I talked with two different tech people for these two problems and they were both excellent in helping me do this install. I am a female with no car stereo wiring knowledge but having Crutchfields tech support at my beck and call made installation easy. I will DEFINETLY use them again for my next purchase. Now I'm looking at replacing my HU in my 2001 Chevy Tahoe, I may even get the exact same unit for it.

    Great buy for Ford fans

Written By Michael, Alamogordo, NM on Monday, October 29, 2007
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I have a 1999 F-350 crew cab. As many Ford fans know this truck has a nice roomy cabin but little to no extra spaces for hiding stereo extras. This being the case (Crutchfield suggested) I teamed this receiver up with a Sony XM-4S slim amplifier (fit under passenger seat nicely), and Pioneer TS-A6871R speakers. WOW! What a sound machine I have in my truck now. I hooked up the receiver straight to the speakers without the Sony amplifier too. The sound is very crisp and clear with or without the Sony amplifier. The amplifier did make the sound have a bit more "boom" in the base response because the high and low filter capability the Sony amplifier has but I would not say I absolutely needed to have the amplifier. If you are light on funds you can buy the amplifier at a later date but, just using the receiver alone to drive your speakers will make the ears very happy. The loudness setting on the receiver does a great job making up for the loss of an amplifier if you don't install one right away. The only thing I did not like about the receiver is that the face plate/door latch button is a bit small. This can cause a fight when trying to access the CD slot while driving. Otherwise, this unit "rocks".

    Great Stereo

This is a great car stereo . The only thing I would add to it would be the ability to switch the display color(listed as Red and Blue but more like red , white and blue) , my last Alpine had a green display and that would match my interior lighting better . I ordered this HU on a Tuesday at 4:22 pm , it was on my door step the next day at 3:17 pm , shipping was free and Scary fast , thank you Crutchfield . Installation was as easy as advertised , had one problem , called tech service and problem was solved quickly and easily . Great sounding HU as always from Alpine . Crutchfield supplied all brackets and cable adapters for free and even a free Ipod cable . The Big Box stores won't do this . Crutchfield know's what fits your car or truck . From now on I'll be buying from Crutchfield .

Sounds fantastic, looks great, did I mention sounds fantastic? iPod controls are pretty fast, only a slight delay. My only gripe is that the controls are somewhat kludgy, buttons don't always do the same thing (I guess this would make them "context sensitive"). Well I'll just have to get used to it, because I love this stereo!

    Pleased with Alpine and Crutchfield

Written By Justin, NC, Gboro on Sunday, October 21, 2007
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

My 03 Tacoma PreRunner DoubleCab decided to quit playing CDs it was a blessing in disguise. I found myself spending a lot of time searching on Crutchfield, reading all the reviews on Pioneer, Alpine, Kenwood, JVC and before long I had narrowed it down to just Alpine.

In my previous vehicle I upgraded a sony x-plod to a Pioneer DEHp-4800MP which was a great sounding HU. It was real easy when driving along to suddenly hit the knob and switch to radio. Like a fool I traded that car in and left the Pioneer in it. This time I decided to go for an Alpine.

I took a gamble and purchased it 'scratch and dent' for only $169.99 and 3 days later it arrived. The Alpine box was damaged (not the ups box) and the mount bracket had a small scratch, didn't need that part anyway - To my pleasant suprise the faceplate and rest of the unit seems to be MINT. Looks like the gamble paid off!

Install was easy, although I did run into a problem and was forced to mount the HU in the lower spot of the double din and have the cubby hole above it. It fit in the top spot fine but when putting back the dash is so close to the top of the HU that it prevents the open/close from flipping down.......I'm happy with it in the lower spot as I think there is less glare at night and it also is less likely to get washed out in sunlight.

As far as sound goes, wow it makes the stock speakers sound great. The HU is real easy to use and the adjustable bass, treble, loudness is great for tweaking the sound. After about 20 mins listening to some Matisyahu, reading the owners manual and getting used to the functions I am very pleased with it. I went to +5 on the bass with setting 2 for bass boost at 60hz seems to be best for my stock speakers and the treble is +2 at 12.5khz seems to sound the best. Then from there turning loudness on is an instant high! I wish I knew more about tuning stereos but I can imagine using amps and a woofer plus better speakers this thing would really rock!

The display looks great and the buttons all feal very solid. Plays CDs fine and the radio is fine. This HU looks much better in real life than in the pictures. My next purchase will have to be an iPod so I can get rid of the clutter of all my CDs - I have the iPod cable hooked up ready in the glove box so roll on Christmas!

    Thanks Crutchfield!

    Great receiver and amazing price!

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I ordered this unit one evening at work and received it the next day which was amazing. I installed the unit on my '95 Porsche 993 cabriolet that evening and the install was easy and perfect. The wiring harness shipped was the correct one and all the wires were attached to the receiver without any difficulties. The red and yellow power wires on the receiver were not suppose to go into corresponding harness color so I called the tech. dept. 11 at night and he told me to swap it and all is well. I attached my 20 gig Ipod (about 3 years old) and voila, it works. The screen is clear and nice, the buttons very intuitive and the CD sound quality is great. I would highly recommned this unit and I can only imagine how good it would sound with an external 4 channel amp. I am using upgraded Boston Acounstic speakers but plan to replace the factory Nokia tweeters which are lame. If all companies, were like Crutchfield, we would have happier customers all over this country. Customer service is a dying breed. Thanks Crutchfield for your a great customer experience.

I knew I was going with Alpine when I was purchasing cause of the quality, my brother has used his Alpine stereo since 1990 and it just now bit the dust. Put this in my 94 Volvo with premium sound and it sounds even better. I now have ipod and love the features this unit has. I do not have any complaints and those that say they cant see the display in the sun is wrong, and anyways what regular HU can you actually see in direct sunlight.

got this reciever on 8-31 and took about 15 minutes to put it in my jeep. i have had alpine years ago the only head unit i would buy but had trouble and they wouldnt last long after warranty went out.
so i switched to pioneer and love pioneer too seems they last forever!
but i seen the ipod controls on the alpine and reading reviews i thought id give alpine another shot.
i have always loved the sound of alpines the best and their s/n ratio.had amp turn off noise thaqt i didnt have called tech support and they hooked me up as always!
the ipod control seems to work fine for me i have like maybe 500 albumns on my ipod and the sound quality is great as i knew it would.
So far i am very pleased with the unit and the price and it comes with the included ipod cable free.
and crutchfield is the best company to deal with they care about their customers.

Went with Alpine as an emotional choice (had an Alpine head unit in an Alfa Romeo in England in the early 90s)--wanted to replace the cruddy unit in my Chevy Blazer and add iPod connectivity--this unit so rocks! The installation was really straightforward--the unit looks neat and sounds even better. The Boss thought I'd paid $ 600 to 700 and was gob smacked when I told her it was $ 199 all in--including the install kit, iPod cable and shipping. Next add ons are the Alpine HD receiver and a new iPod Classic!!

    Perfect for iPhone

Written By Alejandro, Island Lake, IL on Friday, September 14, 2007
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Out of the box, this was a very easy install into my '98 Isuzu Rodeo. Just a little light soldering, which was all very clearly illustrated by the mastersheet.

Once installed, I plugged in my iPhone to the iPod adapter (which was included when I bought the head unit), and it worked perfectly, despite the error message given by the iPhone. The iPod controls are very intuitive, and the iPhone works seamlessly. Incoming calls are indicated by a fadeout of the music, all I need now is a bluetooth adapter to get full functionality.

This is an excellent unit and a very good value. Definitely recommended.

I have purchased Alpine product for around 20 yrs. I really liked what this model has to offer and have come away very pleased. It makes driving just that much more enjoyable especially using the iPod function! iPod users beware that this Alpine receiver will only accept 4th generatin iPods and up. And the instructions that Crutchfield sends you makes this an easy install.

    Alpine CDA-9883

Written By Dustin, Fresno, CA on Monday, August 20, 2007
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I really, really like Alpine. I have liked their receivers since 1996 when I first started installing my own stereos. They are relatively easy to use, nice looking, and they tend to last awhile, work until I need to upgrade. The install instructions provided by Crutchfield made it a snap to install, however due to the stock amp I had to run wire to each speaker. No big deal just time consuming and since it wasn't my first install it went eventless. The sirius works great and after readging the Alpine manual found more features than I realized it had. One drawback to this deck. The dimmer does not get dim enough. The blue buttons are harsh on the eyes and they really can't be turned down. I hooked it up to the illumination thinking that it would be adjustible with the interior lights of the car. It does dim a little when you turn on the headlights, just no enough in my opinion. Overall a great sounding deck, looks good after install, and great service as usual from my friends at Crutchfield. And this is the reason I continue to buy from them.

    Alpine CDA-9883

Written By Phil, Brandywine, Maryland on Wednesday, August 15, 2007
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I purchased the radio an Alpine CDA-9883 for an upgrade to the original Bose system in my 1991 300ZX. I was able to use the existing Bose speakers (individual amps 50 watt in each) using the optional interface hook up. This combined with the built in pre-amp of 18 watts per channel of the radio, its an unbelievable sound. I also picked up the auxillary hook ups for my non ipod MP3 player for a few bucks more. System sounds great, should of done it sooner. For the auxillary hook up make sure you get the Monster gold cable upgrade from Crutchfield. No problems hooking everything up, just plug and play basically. Make sure you read all directions pertaining to the operation, and keep the book handy. Thanks Crutchfield and the tech support team.

    Good enough Alpine stereo

Written By Tim, San Diego, CA on Tuesday, August 07, 2007
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Install was easy especially with hardware provided by Crutchfield for my Tacoma.

Upset that the stereo doesn't support anything earlier than 4G iPods. (I have 3G and I haven't felt the need to upgrade - as far as I'm concerned until a full-screen video iPod comes out, my 3G is fine). I ended up buying a great aux cable for the CD changer port that provided iPod interface(that charges), mini-headphone, and RCA cables (all in one!)

The iPod full speed interface IS the best on the market, however, I think the iPod local interface is better and my aux cable is a great solution.

Other than that, the stereo is fantastic and sounds great. One thing that is nice: there are more characters on the face plate for MP3 tags than most others I researched - and the scrolling is at a good speed.

Next time, I'll probably go with a less expensive stereo without native iPod support and just add the aux cable.

A great unit with just a few quirks

Written By Timothy, NY on Thursday, August 02, 2007
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

    Call me obsessive compulsive...

After hours of research and making pros and cons of what options features I wanted the most to suit my needs I settled on this unit.

Aux in, high speed Ipod cable, plenty of inputs on the back, and a head unit Ipod control interface that was getting rave reviews.

The installation was easy enough, had a few tense moments with getting my old unit disco-ed, but once done it popped in nice and easy.

Every was right up and working and sounded a whole lot better than the factory head unit on my Tacoma.

    A few quirks...

    1) Ipod search search does not work while random is selected. This seems like a minor thing, but I assure you it is not when you don't know why search is NOT WORKING. I finally found that tidbit in the manual, problem solved.

    2) Aux in not immediately available. The control scheme is a little tough to figure out, took me about 5 min before I had it down. Aux input is not already on the list of options for source. It needs to be added after the fact. Took a little while to find.

    3) while this is likely the best Ipod head unit controller there is, it is still a bit slower with the spin wheel than the Ipod, so it takes a bit to find things when you have as many artists as I do. The easy solution is to set the presets to be at X percentage through the artists, IE preset 3 jumps to 50% through the list. However I still have not bothered to set this up....

Overall, a great unit with a good price and great shipping from Crutchfield. VERY HAPPY CUSTOMER and will shop with them again!!!

    Alpine CDA-9883

Written By Chris, Macomb, MI on Monday, July 30, 2007

I installed this stereo over the weekend in my 2004 Ford Ranger and the difference from the stock unit is amazing! Sound quality is perfect, the controls are easy to use and the display is nice because it isn't cluttered with flashing lights and on screen animation. (not needed in my opinion)

The only con that I can think of is that at night when the unit dims (which I like) the blue buttons do not, well they do but it is barely noticeable.

All in all this is an excellent radio! A++ Alpine.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I purchased this alpine deck for my 1995 suburban. My friend has the CDA-9845 & i liked his alot. I really love that this unit came with a free ipod hookup, it actually makes the unit cheaper than buying the lower one & adding the ipod cable. The sound with the unit is awesome, even with my stock speakers. My old radio with get all crackly & fade out, not so with the alpine & the added bass boost is amazing even with the stockers. Im planning on getting some subs & this is the perfect deck for add-ons, especially for the price. Only one problem, with my ipod playing, only the front door & rear pillar speakers play, not the middle passenger doors. & the speakers play when im using the radio, just not with the ipod. Other than that, great product. I'll just have to get the bugs out.

Very Nice Unit...Added the XM module with new speakers

Written By Jeff, Nashville, TN on Thursday, July 19, 2007
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I bought this head unit along with the XM module for a 2006 VW Jetta. I also replaced the factory speakers with front BA S35 3 1/2" and rear Polk 650 6 1/2".

The install of the Alpine unit was very easy with the crutchfield instructions. Before installing the XM unit and speakers I tested the unit out and it actually sounded very nice with the facory speakers. The Red/blue buttons where a perfect match for the VW interior. I also adjusted the contrast and have no problems seeing the display day or night. A couple of years ago I replaced my truck stereo with a Sony reciever and this alpine unit blows it away.

My next step was to replace the speakers. This was more challenging to do. The instructions where very good but you do have to very patient while pulling the doors and wiring out. After listening to the unit with the factory speakers I started questioning if I really needed these but after getting them installed I was quite pleased with the sound and happy I upgraded them.

My next step was to install the XM unit. I ran into problems with this unit. When I plugged everything in, the Alpine unit would power up but that was about it, no sound or anything else. I contacted Conner in support and he determined that I had a bad XM adapter. He sent me a new unit and everything worked this time.

I got to say, it so nice to have a company that stands behind there products and wants to make sure the customer is happy. Most companies would require you to return a unit before they would send a replacement.

I considered the alpine-9885 for the better display. I am still not sure if I made the right decision between the two but I am ver

    Good Head Unit

Written By Andy, Fairbanks, AK on Thursday, July 19, 2007
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I am very pleased with the functionality of this head unit. The price was also right. I didn't feel like it was worth it to upgrade to 4V pre-outs for half the price again. The last head unit I had only had 2V pre-outs and when making cable runs in a pickup if properly done it is fine.
Also I am happy with the Ipod control. Yes it could be better but it is relatively easy to use just not real intuitive. I had to look at the instructions to figure it out, so it took an extra couple minutes. Not a big deal. From what I read it is much faster to cycle through the music than other products. It is fast and that is good because I have a lot of music on my Ipod. I can get to an album almost as fast as I can on my Ipod. Don't try while driving. Even selecting music on an Ipod while driving is asking for it. I'm putting a whole new system in my new truck and just received my new speakers and an amp. I can't wait to see how it all sounds. When you order this unit you might want to order the auxiliary connector also and save on shipping unless you have an Alpine dealer in town. I plan on using it too for other portable audio devices like my shuffle.
Here's my Crutchfield kudos. They were very fast. Shipping was free. Instructions worked great and so did the adapter bracket and wire harness. Can't beat it.

    Best Value for the Money

Written By Chris, Concord, NH on Saturday, July 14, 2007
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The CDA 9883 is the best value head unit for the money, compared to other similarly priced ones. I researched several options, and needed to find one that had good sound, worked well with an ipod connection to the glove box, and would allow an auxiliary connection for my Sirius Sportster 4.

Alpine's ipod interface is generally recognized to be the best. It works beautifully. It is a direct link (no box adapter), and is responsive to track changes and searching for specific songs. Look into reviews about Kenwood's interface and you'll find it is slow and cumbersome. Sony is similar. Pioneer makes decent units, but having owned a 3900 series before, the lack of a mute function is irritating.

Some things you may not know about the 9883: The instruction book says the unit supports the Game Alert and Artist Alert features for Sirius radio. You either have to have a receiver box hooked up, or there is a cool satellite controller you can buy for a plug and play (Item #500KCASC10). Also, you will want to increase the contrast under the setup options. Once you do, the display will be perfectly clear, even in direct sunlight. After tinkering with the different setup options, everything is just the way I want it, including sound. Sound is great. Highs are crisp and the bass is powerful and well defined, even on factory speakers.

I had never installed a radio before, but it was simpler than I thought. If you run into a situation where the Alpine supplied screws don't seem to work with the dash kit, just use screws from the old dash kit. Work slow, avoid scratching the dash, and call Crutchield with any questions. Installed in a 2007 Civic LX Sedan.

    Great unit for the price

Written By Larry C, Atlanta, GA on Friday, July 13, 2007
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This was a replacement for my OEM unit. I put this in a 2004 Nissan Frontier with the factory speakers. Which now sound a lot better than the OEM CD. I wanted a HU which had iPod capability. As usual Crutchfield comes through. Everything I needed was in the box. After the installation (this is my first Alpine) I am pleased.

The search function is good once you master the controls. A little time spent with the manual, and practice make the difference. The preset buttons allow you to search into your catalog by percent. Which is good if you have 1000+ songs! You can find the artist and song fairly quickly.

I rate it 5 out of 5 stars.

    Good Buy

Written By David, Mississippi on Friday, July 13, 2007

    First, the background...
This unit replaces an old Sony X-plod unit that was malfunctioning in a 96 full size Bronco. The install was easier than I expected taking only about half an hour total. The instructions that came with the unit were more than adequate and included numerous visuals.
The wiring was straightforward and the cage snapped into place easily. A turn of the key found the inside of the Bronco filled with great sound. The Blaupunkt/
Infinity front and rears sounded wonderfully clear hooked up to the Alpine unit. The clarity was amazing.
The Alpine was picking up stations the old Sony never even stopped at before. Nice...very nice. The menu is easy to navigate and didnt take long to learn. The screen is easy to see and I dont find it overly bright at night. Someone below mentioned being able to see indicators or words in the screen even when they
arent being utilized at that moment. And that is true...you can see them but it isnt too bad and it is a non-issue to me.

As for any delay in start up when first turning the key on...it isnt bad in my opinion. It is hard for me to find anything I dont like about this model. My
only complaint so far is that I had a little more bass with my old Sony unit (partly due to the fact it had a bass boost, Im sure). I just ordered a pioneer mono amp and a couple of 12" pioneer subs to fix that problem.

Another thing Ill mention is that there are some sites
that say this unit wont fit in a 1996 full size Bronco. Well, that isnt true. It fits just fine.

Bottom line, I love this unit. The only thing that could make it better is for a remote to come with it.

    Alpine CDA-9883

Written By sean, Ridgecrest, CA on Thursday, July 05, 2007
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I'm very happy with this unit. It was a tight fit in my 98 camry, it took some wiggling to get the deck to fit straight in the slot. I have my 5.5g ipod connected to the plug, and it works great. I have all 7500 songs with easy access through the deck. It has a handy fast search method by skipping by percentage with the number buttons. It saves alot of time when you know exactly what you're looking for. People are usually pretty surprised to see that when most people use line-ins and fm transmitters. It's a very attractive bright blue and red at night, giving my car a nice ambient (but not overly bright) lighting. One feature I like, but it probably gets no recognition for, is the volume when the unit powers on. You can go straight to zero when you power up the unit. So if you were out bumping your kelly clarkson, you can turn the volume to 0 as soon as you power the deck back on.

The few problems I have are the screen gets washed out in bright light, and the ipod interface isn't perfect. I live in the desert, so it's bright out here, during midday the screen gets a bit washed out and hard to read. But it's not terrible, I can still read it if I try. The second problem involves how you navigate your ipod via the deck. My main gripe, is that the deck has no memory of what you were just playing or currently playing when you access the ipod. Everytime you access the music selector, it goes to the root menu. After it goes there, you have to navigate through all the menus again to get back to where you were.

I have no complaints with this HU. Integration with the iPod is top notch. I haven't noticed any prolonged delays; it goes just as fast as the iPod itself. Great thing is that you can run the iPod link through your glove compartment, plug in and forget the iPod even exists. No hassles with tape deck adaptors, chargers, or those FM transmitters. The sound is great as well, especially through my Polk components! For the price you are really getting a good deal,(you probably can't beat it) especially with the included iPod adaptor.

Thumbs up for great service and a great product

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

It was easy to install. Simple.

I installed it a few hours ago, and I've been messing with the settings and I am amazed. The sound quality right when I turned it on blew my 02 OEM Honda Accord stereo away. Everything feels very solid on the radio, the buttons, all the knobs and the faceplate mechanism feels very sturdy.

The iPod feature is great! It simply connects to a little slot in the back of the radio, and thats it! I received the wire free from Crutchfield, a $30 value. The interface is VERY fast, the controls are VERY practical. Also, I dont know why people say the controls take a while to get used to, after looking through the manual and trying out different things I pretty much know all the controls already after messing around with it.

Also, the TUNING! I love it. You can control the frequencies of bass that are emphasized: 60, 80hz, etc! Then you can control the emphasis of other bass frequencies (confusing, I know, but it explains it all in the manual). I have mine set to 60hz and it makes my STOCK speakers in the back sound like subwoofers! You can also tune the treble frequency. The tuning on this is so great.

There is a limit on how much I can write, so bottom line is this is a GREAT stereo. Also, order from Crutchfield, they gave me free shipping, free wiring harness, free dash adapter, free iPod interface wire, free car-specific installation directions, and great customer service. All for $200 shipped!

The Straight Skinny On This Head Unit & Installation

Written By JB, Washington State on Saturday, June 23, 2007

OK, having just completed my installation of this Alpine 9883 head unit, I can now sit back and let you know the ins and outs of dealing with the installation and the working of this radio. I purchased this unit to replace the failing factory radio in my 2002 Chevy Avalanche.

I selected this unit after reading a lot of good reviews about the radio. I like the very fast iPod interface, but the buttons take some getting used to. Radio sounds very good, and I like not having to fumble with the iPod to get through my playlists or 3800 songs. I don't know how to use all the buttons yet (heck, it's only been an hour and I'm a guy--we don't need directions do we?)

OK, now onto the installation. I'll assume that many people are like me--some basic skills when it comes to electronics (if you can hook up a stereo or computer without directions, you'll do fine). Now when you order the installation kits and all that come with the radios, remember you get most everything, but will need to have some wiring crimp connectors. Then it's just a matter of matching the wires from the adapter harness to the Alpine harness, crimping and you are good to go. Oh yeah, don't forget that Onstar adapter if you want to maintain that function. That plugs in easily enough. Now removing the existing radio sounds pretty intimidating, but in actuality, it's very easy. I also pulled the shroud from the housing in the center console (2 screws), which allowed me to drill a hole in the top of the little compartment above the CD storage and ran the cable to the back of the radio. If I can install this radio, anyone can!

    Alpine CDA-9883

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I just installed this receiver in my 2003 Honda Civic LX about 2 hours ago and spent an hour or so just driving around listening to my ipod. It works like a charm.

    Pros:
    - Was easy to install
    - Awesome full ipod control (exactly what I was looking for)
    - Easy controls
    - Sounds great
    - Looks great

    Cons:
    - Only thing I can really think of is how the lights for features aren't on but you can still see them (it doesn't look right. I tried finding an option but couldn't) But its not a big deal in my opinion since the feature lights that ARE on are significantly brighter.

If you want a great receiver with awesome ipod control buy this one. And defiantly buy it from crutchfield.com! Saved like ~$50 on wire harnesses, etc etc and the mastersheet is amazing.

Great Components: Another great order from Crutchfield

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

    This is an excellent setup:
    Head Unit:CDA-9883,
    HD Tuner:TUA-T500HD
    iPod Cable:KCE-422i

    Head Unit:
I purchased the above and, as usual through Crutchfield, got a great deal. Going from the factory stereo in a 2001 Saturn to this made a world of difference. The head unit is powerful, sleek (doesn't over do it with useless graphics), and offers many good expansion possibilites.

Overall: This setup works great. Install took me about 2 hours (including crimping and time to run to the hardware store to find a 7/32 nut driver).

    Good Deal

Written By Guitarlos, Silver Spring, MD on Monday, June 11, 2007

I bought this radio for my '03 Civic. I read a lot of reviews, and talked to a service rep w/Crutchfield.

I ended up buying from Crutchfield because it saved me over $100 compared to what I would have paid locally. Great deal!

The radio arrived 2 days later. I installed it myself, the instructions were great. Just a couple of things to mention/warn. Even though I was being careful and following the instructions, I still ended up with some scratches on my dashboard trim from prying out the old unit. Not really bad, but if you have an expensive car, you might want to use a pro-installer. Also, there is some mounting hardware that came with the face plate that didn't seem to go anywhere. But it worked okay, so I guess it was meant for other vehicle types or something.

The radio sounds great. I bought this primarily to play my iPod. It works really well. The controls are fine. I read a lot of the reviews that complain about the iPod controls. I don't see the problem. After reading the manual, I have no trouble navigating through my iPod, (the percentage search feature is the key). Also, the eq controls are really nice, I like the adjustable bass frequency and width, you can really tune the radio to your speakers.

My only complaint is that the display is hard to read in high light situations. I discovered the reason was the angle of the stereo in my car's dashboard. The stereo tilts upwards. When you look at it straight on, it's much easier to read. If you have a car where the stereo is more horizontal, then you'll be fine. Otherwise, I'm happy with my purchase!

    Really sensitive CD-Reader

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I bought this HU because of my pervious experience with Alpine product, and I wanted to connect my iPod to my new car, so I bought this, along with awesome service from Crutchfield.

iPod Connection is awesome, viewing through all the Play-lists, songs, and genre's is easy operation[I didn't even have to look through the owner's manual to figure that out]. and it's simple design of control got me good.

But I do listen to my CD's still, and this HU is just not meant to play CD's or something. I went through all the settings and resetting the HU, and playing fresh burned and even brandnew CD from a store.. It would show up alot of error msg's and take forever to load mp3 format files. and when it does play, it plays for about 10 sec before it show's up "error" msg.

Maybe I've gotten a bad HU from Alpine, but I've had way too many Alpine HU's before this one, and I doubt my statement on the one single bad apple.

I'll be deciding if I want to keep this HU or switch to something else in a week with Crutchfield.

So, I give this product 3 stars for lacking way much in 1 area out of 3 main functions.

    Great Purchase!

Written By Bruce, North Carolina on Sunday, May 20, 2007
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I purchased this unit for my wife to use in her 2003 Ford Escape. This vehicle is equipped with the Mach audio system but it just never sounded as good as the unit in my Explorer. The main reason for purchase was for my wife to be able to use her Ipod in the vehicle. The Alpine system works great and my wife loves it! It is a very nice interface and seems to work very well indeed. The Crutchfield supplied adapter for the dash opening in this vehicle has a built in pocket that can be placed on top or bottom. This provided the perfect spot for the Ipod and I drilled a hole in the back of it to run the cable through. The cable can be pushed back out of sight ( the hole is too small for the Ipod end of the cable to go through and get lost) and the Ipod is snug and secure in here. My wife has the 30GB unit and it works great. I have heard how a good head unit can improve the sound of the system and I must say, I didn't believe it was possible. But, after installing this unit, it made the car come alive and now the speakers sound awesome!! I don't see any reason to change them now. The Crutchfield customer service folks were great too, very well done!!

I only have a couple of negatives with this unit. One is the fact that the buttons are very small compared to the stock unit. I wish the manufacturers would make units bigger so the buttons could be seen easier. Once you learn the unit though, this probably won't be a problem. Next, the unit has an annoying amplifier pop at turn on. Even with the volume set to zero, it pops the subwoofer when it turns on. I hope there is a way out of this but if not, I still would purchase this again. It is overall an awesome unit.

I bought this to replace my old Aiwa HU. It was a vast improvement. It improved the sound quality of my system and looks great in the dash of my '03 Civic. Main reason I bought this unit was for the iPod controls and it does not dissapoint. I plug my iPod in and then I just leave it in the glove box. No wires or anything in sight. Very easy to use the controls on the faceplate.

Only complaint is that I can't see the display during the daytime unless i shade the screen. It has to sit at a bit of an upward angle in my dash, i think this may have something to do with it.

I wanted this HU to replace my factory HU in my Maxima. Alpine builds quality products, the CDA-9883 is no exception.

Pros; this unit has above average sound, ipod interface/controls are great, has three pair of RCA jacks for future upgrades.

Cons; RCA jacks are only 2 volt capable, no multi color button/display function, display backgroud is washed out in sun light, no remote.

If you have the budget step move up to the CDA-9885.

    I would recommend

I bought this stereo 2 weeks ago and had it installed. it works awesome. the ipod interface is so much more user friendly then my old kenwood stereo. the sound is alot clearer then my old kenwood aswell. i plan to add 2 amps for speakers and subs in the next month, but i expect to have no problems.

As for previous reviews, accessing the cd player from behind the faceplate is a good thing not a bad thing. it minmizes the dust which makes your cd player not skip in a year or two

enough. when selecting ipod menu's, it would of been better if i could push the rotary to select
menu, instead of clicking on PLAY/PAUSE/ENT button. i wish alpine would have kept
the navigation blue buttons on the left of the rotary. it just made more sense with rewind and
fast foward buttons on the left. the buttons and rotary are by default red. i wish i could
change them to blue. phone button is useless unless you purchase the bluetooth unit = $$$.
alpine makes really good headunits, best out of all car stereo makers i personally think. the 9883 was
the only model with dot matrix text and bass engine.
clock - i wish it showed the time all the time. i have to flip
thru the song title just to tell what time it is. overall, its a very nice headunit. i hope they
will make some changes on the 08' models next year.

    Love this Stereo

I recently purchased this head unit and I absolutely love it. I've always been partial to Alpine. I can see the display even with sun shining right in my back window. There are 3 sets of pre-amp outputs. I have a 4 channel Alpine amp and a Profile mono amp for my 2 subs running off this head unit. The sound is great, clear and loud. The menus are soo user friendly and easy to navigate. To me, its just one of the best values for the money. You will not be disappointed if you purchase the radio. It does everything and more than some units at twice the price.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I was looking for a replacement when my factory deck decided one day it would just stop working. The price on the Alpine was right around the budget I was on. Installation of the deck was simple and straight forward. Crutchfield supplied all of the hardware needed to install this unit in my car so there was no worries about having to go the local stereo store to purchase something else that was needed.

Most of the controls and settings have been accessible without having to look them up in the owners manual making it very user friendly.

The sound quality from this unit is amazing in comparison to the factory unit. I didn't realize how bad the factory unit was.

I am very pleased with this unit and would recommend it just based on the simplicity of use alone. The sound quality just makes it that much more appealing.

First of all this product works great, it has the best Ipod interface thus far that I have seen I have a Panasonic in my VW and run the ipod on that as well and this is far better, you use the knob as your scroll wheel.
My only complaint is you have to hit the mix(random/shuffle) mode everytime you change artists/playlists. Other than that it is awesome. I would recommend this for any ipod user.

Installation was straight forward. It is a very attractive unit. Two things I disliked immediately are that the CD can only be accessed from behind the cover and there is no way to power off the unit - it turns on with the turn of the key. Sound is excellent compared to the factory radio.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I had never owned an Alpine deck before, although I had owned their Amps and was really pleased with their quality. So when I purchased a new car (2007 Toyota Corolla S) and the factory system wasn't cutting it, I decided to purchase an Alpine deck to match the Alpine amps and Alpine Type-R Sub I'd be installing.

So far, I've only installed the deck, this is why I'm reviewing it first, and it's amazing! It transformed my factory speakers into what sounded like aftermarket speakers. The dynamic range it added is just phenomenal. Plus, I have 3 Pre-outs to run my 4 way amp, and the dedicated sub output. It was a great price, easy to read display, durable detachable faceplate. All in all, just a great head unit.

I also got the optional Alpine KCA-121B Male Ai-Net to Female RCA Adapter which allowed me to hook up my MP3 player. I love it! It's great to have 3,000 songs at my fingertips now and still have the clarity, and sound of an Alpine deck. Just a great great purchase!

I couldn't be more happy! And Crutchfield gave me the mounting kit and wiring harness free along with free shipping! What a great deal!
