Alpine excellence in your dash

The CDA-9886 CD receiver furthers Alpine's top-notch reputation for excellent sound. Its strong internal amp delivers powerful output, and you can shape the sound with Bass Engine® sound controls — a 2-band parametric equalizer, plus a low-pass filter for your subwoofer. The stereo also features a high-pass filter that'll keep your full-range speakers clear by eliminating the low bass that they can't handle.

    Display Features

BioLite Display: The crisp, clear, white on black BioLite display uses biochemical luminescence technology that provides outstanding visibility even in daylight. It is 40% brighter than normal displays, with higher resolution and better contrast. In addition, it has a much wider viewing angle than conventional displays.

Background Animation Displays: You can select from 4 different animated background displays: falling Vs, glimmering water surface, gears, or pulsating shapes (hearts, diamonds, musical notes, stars, etc). The animation displays can be turned off for a plain black background.

Dimmer: This unit is equipped with an illumination lead; when the unit's dimmer mode is set to Auto and the illumination lead is connected to your vehicle's headlight circuit, the display and button illumination will dim to a fixed, preset level whenever the headlights are turned on. If preferred, you may choose the Manual dimmer mode setting, so the display and button illumination is dim at all times.

Blackout: To reduce power consumption you can turn off the display and button back lighting. When the Blackout Mode is turned on the display will illuminate for five seconds each time you press a button.

Changer Name: You can change the name on the display to match the type of device connected to the CD changer input; Changer, USB, or Portable.

Opening Message: When engaged, this feature will display a special message each time you turn on the radio on certain dates; Merry Christmas, Happy Birthday (after you program your birth date), etc.

    Audio Section

CEA-2006 Compliant: The specifications given by Alpine for the built-in amplifier comply with the CEA-2006 mobile amplifier power testing and measurement standards from the CEA (Consumer Electronics Association). All manufacturers who comply with the standard can display the CEA-2006 logo on their product.

Bass and Treble Controls: The head unit features independent Bass and Treble controls that allow you to adjust each setting from -7 to +7.

Subwoofer Pre-out: In addition to the front and rear 4-volt preamp outputs, the CDA-9886 has a dedicated 4-volt subwoofer preamp output with variable level adjustment of 0 to 15.

Power IC Off: When an external amplifier is powering all the speakers in the system, you can turn the internal amp off, which will improve the sound quality.

Interrupt Feature: When a device having the interrupt feature (such as a cellular telephone) is connected to the receiver, the audio signal will be automatically muted whenever the interrupt signal is received from the device. The supplied wiring harness contains a pink/black Interrupt lead that needs to be connected to the device's interrupt signal connection.

    Sound Processing (with optional PXA-H100)

Imprint: With the addition of the optional PXA-H100 Imprint box (500PXAH100, sold separately) and KTX-H100 tuning kit (500KTXH100, sold separately) a car's inherent acoustic shortcomings can be overcome with the MultEQ feature. Imprint also gives you much more sound adjustment flexibility as detailed below.

MultEQ: MultEQ, developed by Audyssey Labs, automatically optimizes the audio for the listening environment inside your vehicle. The Imprint kit includes the hardware, software, and microphone necessary to measure multiple positions in the car and capture frequency and time domain information from the vehicle's actual acoustical environment. Once the car's speaker location delays are measured, along with the frequency peaks and dips caused by the absorptive and reflective materials in the interior, MultEQ creates a set of equalization filters to correct the frequency response and time domain problems for each speaker in the vehicle. It also removes sound distortion caused by the specific acoustical problems in the vehicle by applying unique FIR filters, using more than 500 points along the frequency spectrum per channel. This optimizes the sound reproduction to the specific vehicle listening environment with much greater precision than can be achieved using typical graphic or parametric equalization. The result is a more accurate soundstage and smoother, more natural sound optimized to match your vehicle.

Equalizer: 10 typical equalizer settings are preset at the factory for a variety of musical source material. You can select from - Flat, Pops, Rock, News, Jazz & Blues, Electrical Dance, Hip Hop & Rap, Easy Listening, Country, and Classical. The head unit will also save six custom EQ curves you create by adjusting the units built-in EQ. Choose the parametric or graphic EQ:

    • 5- Band Parametric EQ: The built-in Parametric EQ allows you to adjust the following 5 frequency bands in 1/3 octave steps from -6 to +6 dB at a bandwidth Q factor of 1, 1.5, or 3
      • Band 1: 20 Hz to 80 Hz
      • Band 2: 50 Hz to 200 Hz
      • Band 3: 125 Hz to 3.2 kHz
      • Band 4: 315 Hz to 8 kHz
      • Band 5: 800 Hz to 20 kHz
    • 7-Band Graphic EQ: The built-in Graphic EQ allows you to adjust the following 7 frequencies from -6 to +6 dB
      • Band 1: 63 Hz
      • Band 2: 150 Hz
      • Band 3: 400 Hz
      • Band 4: 1 kHz
      • Band 5: 2.5 kHz
      • Band 6: 6.3 kHz
      • Band 7: 17.5 kHz

Crossover: The active crossover can be used as a 2.2 channel (3-way; low-pass subwoofer, band-pass midrange, high-pass tweeter) or a 4.2 channel (2-way; high-pass front and rear, low-pass subwoofer). A crossover limits the frequencies delivered to a given speaker, so you send only the frequencies for which the speaker is well suited. The crossover adjusts the high pass filter or low pass filter of each band along with the slope and output level. You can adjust the following crossover settings:

    • 4.2 Channel:
      • High Pass Filter: the front and rear outputs are individually adjustable; crossover from 20 to 200 Hz in 1/3 octave steps with a slope of Flat, 6, 12, 18 or 24 dB/oct, additionally you can adjust the output level from -12 to 0 dB
      • Low Pass Filter: the subwoofer output can be stereo or mono; crossover from 20 to 200 Hz in 1/3 octave steps with a slope of Flat, 6, 12, 18 or 24 dB/oct, additionally you can adjust the output level from -12 to 0 dB
    • 2.2 Channel:
      • Tweeter/High Pass Filter: crossover from 1 kHz to 20 kHz in 1/3 octave steps with a slope of 6, 12, 18, or 24 dB/oct, additionally you can adjust the output level from -12 to 0 dB
      • Midrange/Band Pass Filter: a band pass has both high pass and low pass filters; HPF 20 to 200 Hz in 1/3 octave steps with a slope of Flat, 6, 12, 18 or 24 dB/oct; LPF from 20 Hz to 20 kHz in 1/3 octave steps with a slope of Flat, 6, 12, 18 or 24 dB/oct, additionally you can adjust the output level from -12 to 0 dB
      • Subwoofer/Low Pass Filter: the subwoofer output can be stereo or mono; crossover from 20 to 200 Hz in 1/3 octave steps with a slope of Flat, 6, 12, 18 or 24 dB/oct, additionally you can adjust the output level from -12 to 0 dB

Time Correction: The time correction feature delays the audio signal to the speakers closer to the listener. This effectively creates a perception of increased distance for those speakers. Time Correction allows the listener to be placed at an equal distance from all speakers for optimum staging. You can adjust the distance of each speaker and subwoofer (6-channel) to the listener from 0 to 132.7 inches.

Media Xpander: The MX (Media Xpander) function makes vocals or instruments sound distinct by restoring sound quality typically lost during recording or transmission; this function helps restore audio information that becomes obscured when audio is compressed. The MX function can be applied to all sources, except AM radio. There are three settings and each source can have its own setting.

    CD Playback

MP3/WMA/AAC Playback: This unit can play CD-ROM, CD-R, and CD-RW discs containing MP3, WMA, and AAC files recorded using the ISO 9660 Level 1 or Level 2 formats. MP3 files with bit rates from 32 kbps to 320 kbps, WMA files with bit rates from 48 kbps to 192 kbps, and AAC files with bit rates from 16 kbps to 320 kbps are supported. Variable bit rates are also compatible. Up to 510 files/folders and a maximum of 255 folders can be read from one disc. ID3 tags v1 and v2, and WMA tags are supported; track title, artist name, and album name ID3 tag data can be displayed.

Text/File/Folder Quick Search: When you're playing a disc with CD Text, ID3, or WMA tags, you can easily search for a track or file by its title. Once you have activated the search mode, you can use the rotary encoder to quickly scan through the titles to locate the desired track.

    External Device Connection

USB: Using the rear panel USB port, you can connect and control an audio device with MP3, WMA, or AAC files and a USB jack. The female Type A USB port is located on an 8" pigtail.

iPod Full Speed: The CDA-9886 has an iPod Direct Connection mounted on a 4" pigtail on the rear panel. When used with the supplied KCE-422i Alpine Full Speed Connection cable, the receiver can interface with most Apple iPods with a dock connector. You can quickly and easily search through all of the music contained on your iPod by Playlist, Artist, Album, Song, Podcast, Genre, or Composer. You can view artist, album, song, and track number on the head unit's display. When operating your iPod through the Full Speed connection, you can use the Direct Search function in Playlist, Artist, Album, or Song mode to quickly locate your music. Using the unit's preset buttons, you can quickly jump over a designated percentage of your song content (Preset 1: 0% to 16%, Preset 2: 17% to 32%, Preset 3: 33% to 49%, Preset 4: 50% to 66%, Preset 5: 67% to 82%, Preset 6: 83% to 100% of the song library). The Alpine CDA-9886 and KCE-422i Alpine Full Speed Cable is "Made for iPod" compatible and support the following iPod model features (as of Dec. 2009):

    Worst Receiver ever!

Written By JB, Nashville, TN on Saturday, March 12, 2011

This is the worst receiver I have ever had the misfortune of owning, I am not sure what the other owners are use to that are ranking this so high.
    Let's begin

    1. Black out function sometimes will not allow you to wake receiver back up
    2. When you turn off the unit, the clock disappears too
    3. Same button for turning unit off as to select another source i.e. cd, ipod, tuner so that many times, if you don't hold the button down long enough to turn off unit, you just end up selecting something else, Very very annoying
    4. Ipod interface is terrible. Unit freezes for a few seconds every time you try to change a song or artist
    5. Audio controls are spotty. You have very little adjustment options and those options are not always available for you depending on what input source you are using. Very confusing

Basically, this is my first and last Alpine. My previous Kenwood and Sony headunits were not as expensive as this one but atleast they work and have a working clock I can see all the time

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Writing this review a month and half after buying/installing. This product is now discontinued and I could've got the 9887 for a few dollars more. Would've been nice to know this information. Knob sticks really bad, got another unit with the same problem. Overall I like this unit but like I said, had I known the 9887 price was going down I would've waited all of 40 days for it. The service I got when getting another unit was great, install was super easy with instructions provided. I don't like how the iPod Touch won't charge and I need another expensive adapter. Thats my only real complaint is getting a stepped down product days before the upgraded version goes on clearance...

    THE very best

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

this unit does everything i hoped it would do. i wouldn't take advice from anyone below in their reviews because they have no idea what they are talking about. this unit does charge the iPod. at least mine which is a first generation nano. it also shuts it off so when i get back in the car the songs are left off right where they were. and it also shuts the iPod off whenever i shut the car off. the display is also not too bright especially if you have the dimmer setting on the lowest. and if it is too bright there is a blackout function that shuts all the lights off. but this is the very first unit i have ever bought and couldn't be happier. it will fit perfectly with the alpine sub i am planing on getting from crutchfield. especially after that little thank you they sent me in the mail!

    Just what i thought

installed on my own for the first time due to the packet given to you for free by Crutchfield and it made my audio produce amazing sound quality compared to my old pioneer head unit

pretty good but could be a better experience

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This receiver is pretty nice and I would have given it 5 stars except for a couple problems. I got the optional Alpine KCE-400BT Parrot Bluetooth Adapter which works great once you get the proper cables. If you use this with your iPod you will have to buy the KWE-460E Adapter Cable and KCE- 433iV Full Speed iPod Cable since the cables included can't be used. That's an additional $50 for cables. It seems to me that they could have made the cables compatible but chose to stick the buyer instead. I also got the PXA-H100 IMPRINT Audio Processor. It does a good but not great job of equalizing the sound. As others have noted in it's reviews it makes the sound too bright. You can correct this somewhat with the Tone controls (Sub, Bass and Treble) but the problem I found is that there is a harshness you can't get rid of so playing at loud volumes is iffy with some music. I'll redo it with the microphone in different positions to see if it helps.

This my fourth Alpine deck in 14 years and as always a truly amazing receiver, great sound, great cosmetics, great features and very user friendly. I wish it came with integrated bluetooth but there's always upgrade options. Display a little too bright.

    Just Wonderful

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I did quite a bit of looking around before I selected this unit. I had been wanting an Alpine unit for several years, and I am very happy with this unit. The USB feature is truly a wonderful thing. You can fill up a USB memory stick with music, plug it in, and play it all. It's like having a mini, removable hard drive for all of your music. Not really a need to use CD's anymore at all. If you need to add more music, just plug it into your computer and add copy it to your USB drive. Super easy, and very user friendly.

I have seen a few reviews commenting on how they dislike the fact that this only has a 2 band EQ. Yes, it does, but you can change the frequency of the two bands in the settings. It is a really nice feature that took me a bit of messing around to find.

Also, the built in iPod connector really works well. The head unit will control your iPod for you and display all of the track information as well. You can't go wrong with this unit at all. Enjoy!

    Awesome unit & Crutchfield Support

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I finished the installation of my Alpine CDA 9886 today. Although I have a technical background, I still ended up calling the Crutchfield technical staff three times; once for help with the din adapter for my '02 Thunderbird, another time for clarification on how to hook up the sub-woofer, and finally with the programming for the steering wheel control adapter. I found the Alpine radio controls and programming to be very intuitive, and did not once need to resort to the manual! I was able to figure out how to pre-set FM stations and control and operate my iPod, as well as set the clock, all from just following the front panel controls. As a consumer who is over 50 years of age, I was looking for a unit that would give me great audio sound, a way to control my iPod without having wires dangling from the front, have a human interface that was straight forward, and this unit fits the bill. I am also very pleased with the pre-sale support the Crutchfield team exhibited. I went first to two other electronic stores before I ordered from Crutchfield, and the sales people at these stores were not very helpful. Ten minutes on the phone with one of Crutchfield's customer service representatives and I had what I needed. Furthermore, none of the other stores stocked the adapter kits and harness I needed for my car, so I would have been left to fend for myself. I love the fact that Crutchfield includes everything one needs to do the complete job. What a great experience! Thank you!

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Good points: Function, very clean good sound quality. (Hint for ipod users. If you like your music loud & with min distortion. Use .wav files. Open them in a wave editor and reduce the volume of the file). Controls are easy to use. Internal amp can be turned off. Bio lite display is nice and easy to read except when the sun is reflecting off of it. Display has an auto off function. Ipod control does not switch to Ipod or automatically turn on the receiver when you plug the Ipod in. Mute button.

Things I don't like: Will not play a 24 bit sound file. Small buttons would be easier to see if they were red. Also why not make it user selectable, how hard could it be? The display overall is very nice when illuminated except the turquoise icon in the biolite display. It is very ugly. Make it red, white or blue to match the rest of the display but Turquoise? Turner is just OK. Pioneer super tuner III is much better. Made in China. I have yet to find a car receiver besides Blaupunkt available today that is not made in China. I find this disappointing and frustrating as a consumer.

Considering the choices we have as average consumers. The Alpine performance with exception of the tuner is excellent.

Very pleased with this unit but even more so with Crutchfield's service. During installation I had an issue with getting all sources to play. I called tech support (on a weekend no less) and the person I spoke to told me exactly which wires to change to fix the problem. It had to do with the year and model car I have. The information to fix this was not available in the manuals or anywhere i looked on the internet but the Crutchfield person knew what to do right away. I changed the wires as directed and voila - everything worked perfectly. Tell your friends - Crutchfield will take care of you. If they are $20 more etc. it is worth it in my opinion because this kind of service is hard to get. Thank you tech support, my ride is rockin!

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The CDA-9886 is my second Alpine receiver and I love it better than the first. Mainly because of the "BioLite" display and the iPod controls. True that it doesn't charge the iPod, but when you switch modes, it turns it off...that is if you have the iTouch. So when I'm tired of listening to the radio or a CD, I can continue to listen to my iPod right where I left off and my battery is saved.

The display is great. No matter where you are in the car or how much light is shining, you can see everything. This was my disappointment with my last Alpine (CDA-9805).

Easy to install and easy to operate. What more could you ask for in a pretty economical head unit? Way to go Alpine!!

This head unit is way worth the money. I bought one for my boat. I hooked it up with three Rockford Fosgate amps (2)700x and (1) 800s with three sets of Rockford fosgates 6.5" three way power speakers, then I teamed them with (2) 12" Rockford Fosgate HX2 Big daddy woofers. I added (2) chrome 2 farad digital caps. I also added the Alpine XM unit and the water proof 100' foot range remote control. (so when your on the beach bumping, you can change stations turn it up or down flip thru the iPod and so on cool stuff) Dual batteries and Rockford Fosgates "0" power and negative power cables. I also use top of the line twisted rca patch cables. can you say Pounds hard!! Yes you can.. Plus its super clear at any volume. I liked this head unit so much I bought two more. One for my BMW and the other for my Expedition. They two sound great. They both are just as nice as my boat.. I have had Alpine since the early 80's you cant go wrong. i will only buy Alpine for my head unit... AA++++++ Thanks for looking..

This is a good head unit. I think the remote control has horrible range. i have a remote from an older Alpine which I use because it has better range. this new remote that comes with the 9886 has to be pointed directly at it for it to work for me. i love the USB and 4v pre-outs. its a shame that it appears that all newer alpine's have 2v pre-outs with an additional 100 some-odd dollar adapater to make those into 4v pre-outs. another money maker for them. i like alpines for their no frills and only what is needed head units. they have good quality and this is true for the 9886

I have always had Alpine HUs and the 9886 has been the best by far. No glitches, problems, or complaints! It is pretty pricey but you definitely get what you pay for. The remote control is awesome too...you wouldn't think you'd use it but it makes surfing songs alot easier while driving. This unit has all the bells and whistles like telling you happy birthday and merry christmas ( not important but it's icing on the cake). And you can hook up anything to it! GO ALPINE!

    Reciever a la carte

Written By jeauboux, Tucson, AZ on Monday, November 02, 2009

The good: The display is nice and clean. The menu is very intuitive once you figure it out. I can navigate my thumb drive fairly quickly, although it doesn't display folder names.

The bad: For the price, I should get more than a 2 band equalizer. Sure, you can upgrade it with Imprint, but it'll cost you. Meanwhile, the sound is underwhelming. The 5 year old Panasonic deck in my last car blows this Alpine away.

I should be able to hook up my Sirius receiver without having to buy an adapter cable AND a connection box AND a seperate dock. I have a lifetime Sirius subscription, so to transfer to the Alpine Sirius reciever costs money. Meanwhile, I've been shopping for a new receiver for my car. End result: I've been without Sirius since I installed this deck 3 months ago, even though I've purchased 2 extra components for it.

Everything you'd really want to do with this deck will require you to buy a seperate adapter, or component, or both. I shouldn't need to install an electronics department behind my receiver to unlock the full functionality of it. This is my first Alpine deck, and it'll probably be my last unless Alpine starts including built-in features instead of add-ons.

I recently purchased this deck to replace my old cda-9811 which i loved but had to donate to a needy in-law, the 9886 has most of the features as my old deck and some new ones also. i love this deck, the usb port is great for my thumb drives and the controls make it easy to find songs and files. i dont use the ipod cable but my friends hook theres up and it works great as well, the deck takes control of the ipod and makes choosing songs and artist easy. i gave this deck four stars only because it does not have an aux. input included but it is capable with alpines cable, also because i really wanted a usb and aux. input on the decks face but i could'nt trade off the 4volt preamp inputs to get them. all in all i highly recommend this deck. this was my first purchase with crutchfield and i must say they are excellent, fast free shipping, great support and very good value.

First off I have always like Alpine units cause of the ease of use, so when I bought my car I decided to put this deck in. With crutchfield sending me everything I needed to install (except for a few tools which you can purchase) I was able to install the deck in about 1.5 hours. I took my time, referencing the diagrams often to make sure I was connecting the right wires. The sound quality coming from this deck improved the sound out of the stock speakers so much I almost thought that they were aftermarket speakers. I would recommend this deck to anyone looking for something basic, with great quality, and ease of use. the ipod adapter makes for even more enjoyable experience, I do want to try to use the usb adapter with a thumb drive so I can just upload music hide it in the back. I will be purchasing a set of 4 speakers and two subs for my car later only through crutchfield.

the radio DID NOT charge the ipod however it did control it flawlessly. It
sucks that if my ipod is dead, i can't listen to my music on it. Had many
problem with the install in a 2006 silverado with the steering wheel control

This is my 6th Alpine car stereo. I have to say this unit is awesome. The installation was so simple and the tech support answered all my questions!!! As for the stereo, the IPod adapter is on the back of the stereo and the cable fits in the glove box. This is a great feature. No cords are hanging out of the dash and the IPod is not visible. All the controls on the deck are simple and easy to use. This deck looks fantastic and the blue color matches the interior of my car. You can never go wrong with Alpine in my opinion!! I would buy this deck again and recommend this stereo to anyone.

Not for 2002 Generation Subaru WRX

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This HU is definitely awesome as far as looks and features are concerned. Specs speak for themselves so I won't get into that.
I installed the 9886 in a 2002 Subaru WRX. I initially used the top DIN. When it was time to put a CD in I found a problem. The placement of the button to open the face is in the extreme upper left of the unit. Getting the button depressed was hit and miss because of the factory trim. It was enough of a hassle that I decided to use the lower DIN instead. So, I took about five minutes and did so. Problem solved? Not really. Now that the button was within easy reach but the unit face hit the bottom of the factory trim and wouldn't open all the way. Bummer.
One other thing about this mostly great unit. Driving at night is a real distraction. The dim switch was connected and the dimmer setting was all the way down. OMG this thing is BRIGHT. It looked cool but at some point I want to see the road. Maybe at some point Alpine will fix these two issues or maybe not. For now it's being returned and a Sony CDX-GT930UI is on the way.

This has been a great buy for me! First of all, I've been an alpine guy for a few years now, and don't see myself changing anytime soon.

    PROS:
Sleek design, user friendly, great biolite display, etc. I also love the fact that the brightness can be controlled with the dimmer control on your dash. The sound is also amazing, really takes the factory speakers to a level they've never been before

    Cons:
When I have my Ipod hooked up and I search through my playlists/artists/albums, you always have to start from the very beginning. It doesnt take you to where you currently are on your Ipod, so sometimes it takes a while to find what I'm looking for.

This is a great radio, looks nice in my 04 GMC Sierra.
Easy to use controls, plays USB with no problems and is fast scrolling the folders imo. Not as loud as I expected but I'm sure that is because of the metra harness I had to install because of onstar/bose system.

Cons: Only thing is the USB cable isn't long enough, needs to be about 1-2 foot longer to fit in the dash pocket with no problem. I suggest having one before
the install so you don't have to take the radio back out
    to extend it.

    Overall: Great Radio!!

The unit was supposed to be a customer return but looked new to me. Had no trouble with installation other than dropping and temporarily losing a 10mm socket in the front console box when loosening a bolt for the ground wires. Operation and performance are about what I expect from Alpine, which is nice. I found I had to place the MP3s on my USB drive into folders of 100 or less. Originally they (all 1200 or so) were all together in the root folder and after it played 100 it would go back to and play #1. It helps to read the user manual on the CD that comes with the unit..

I installed this in my 1999 E320. The install kit worked flawlessly, though it did take a bit of time to be CERTAIN that I had the wiring harnesses spliced properly.
Once installed, the Alpine works very well. I chose this unit because I wanted an iPod-ready Alpine deck. The 9886 controls my old 4-gig Gen2 Nano and charges it also. However, I can only control the play of my son's Gen4 Nano - the 9886 refuses to charge this newer iPod.

I've been very satisfied with the sound quality from this Alpine, which is connected to my OEM Bose setup. Overall, it's a good combination of performance and value for the $$.

    Pros:

    - It has a very very beautiful interface

    - Never been into alpine yet surprisingly very easy to toggle the menus & buttons

    - The track description is very helpful, and scrolls real nice

    - Very clear and bright display & fonts at day, beautiful so-called bio-lite indeed (read cons below)

    - It remembers the last track you've played

    - Very quick reading my 8 gigs flash disk

    - Creates really amazing& powerful sounding, beats my previous sony mex-bt5000

    Cons :

    - The display for me is too bright at night even at it's lowest setting, it's a little bit annoying while driving at night

    - It shows the track's descriptions between skipping very very slow about 3 to 5 seconds! horrible! so you won't get a quick info of the song quickly

    - Alpine is so cheap on the usb cable connector .. we need at least 1 foot extra! so i don't have my flash disk dangling out from
the back of the HU to the side, not even near passenger's knee

Overall i'm am very happy with the product. If you can bare those cons, you'll be very happy with this HU. For the simple single din dotted display HU, It beats pioneer's (contrasy boring blue display) , kenwood's (grainy), sony's (grainy and beaten by sunlight
at day, and it's curvy glary face makes it worst) displays because of the bio-lite. So get this if you're looking for pretty display & great sounds with easy access.

I'm a former Alpine owner so I was expecting a high quality unit when I bought this to replace my aging 9813. I wasn't disappointed in the quality, just in the features that were left out. I was partly to blame as I THOUGHT the spec sheet read it has parametric EQ etc etc built in onboard, I was wrong. You must buy a module that then makes it more expensive than the next unit up. The KEY point for this unit, even over the next units up, is that it accepts a USB flashdrive without an adapter or ANOTHER addon module. Yep, 4 gigs is now pluggged in and I have a 16 gig on the way. The controls are easy to use, see and work, even for big hands like mine. Alpine DID drop the amp watttage compared to the old units so between that and a lack of the MMX enhancement, you WILL notice a slight decrease in sound quality vs the older models. Don't take this the wrong way, I love this unit, I'm just greedy and wish it did more as it comes out of the box...

This is definitely a great sounding/operating receiver. As usual, the Alpine unit delivers excellent sharpness and clarity from a listening standpoint. Any Alpine Ive ever used seems to do a very good job at detailing the high frequencies for a very realistic sound. Its also easy to use, looks great, and the Crutchfield service was excellent. All the install gear was included, it all fit my car perfectly, and the package showed up sooner than I expected(especially considering that we experienced a strong snowstorm the day before delivery....so they had to have shipped immediately). the only reason I dont give a perfect rating is because I wish you didnt have to buy the seperate "imprint" unit to be able to open up this units full EQ capability. The basic EQ is still plenty capable

Bought this unit based on its advertised iPod and USB interfaces, as these are what I was looking for in a new stereo unit. There is good and bad as far as the iPod hookup with this unit. It doesn't charge my Nano when it is plugged in to the stereo. And when you turn off the car/unit, the unit does not tell the Nano to turn off, so the iPod just runs down its battery unless you manually turn it off - kind of annoying. The scroll wheel is slow and not well suited to searching through your songs, but it does recognize playlists, so you can just make a playlist to avoid scrolling through songs. Overall, it is tastefully designed, and not too flashy. I'd recommend it, because it does sound really good, and the iPod hookup is easy, if not perfect. However, I'm sure there are better units out there that cost a lot less.

I 'm still tweaking different combo's of sound and each input requires a little fine tuning but hey thats half the fun ... I like it alot so far.

I don't think the button arrangement is optimal, but I would guess that all depends on you personal usage patterns.

One thing I do miss compared to many factory units is that it does does do the mundane task of displaying the time while turned off. The unit must be on to display the time.

In general I would recommend this unit.

Installed my head unit probably about a month ago, after much hesitation
about doing it. After spending hours and hours doing my research on
different units and getting recomendations from all my friends and even a
few stero geek teachers i finally decided that the Alpine 9886 headunit
would be my best choice...All my friends are jealous and wish they could
get one. Install was super easy with the kit and instructions from
Crutchfield. Had it all done and tucked back in my dash in about an hour.

The one and only draw back i have is...if you got an Ipod with a few
hundred or even thousands of songs, trying to go threw and find them can
be a real pain, even with the ability to jump to sections of the alphabet. it
just takes too long to use the scroll nob to find you song, but other than
that.. awesome head unit. it'll really get your system going.

A+ to Crutchfield and A+ to Alpine for a great head unit.

This Alpine HU was more that I expected, sounds great, and with the iPod and USB interfaces I have more options. I use both the iPod connection and the USB connections, I dropped in a bunch of MP3's onto the thumb drive, and it was all recognized; the iPod connect just works.. it's simple and easy. I do wish that the Alpine would walk the folders of the USB thumb drive, and provide titles, but I don't think many do that, it just lists folders with playable MP3s. So if you share your thumb drive with data files, the data files just get skipped... simple. I like it a lot, and have been using it for about 3 months... Install was simple, I'm a bit slow doing connections with the wiring kit, but overall the install took about 2 hours. Knowing now, how my car comes apart and back together, I think I could do it again in under an hour... but it was a simple task... just don't be in a hurry, take your time because the results are just fantastic!

This radio replaced the Factory Radio in my daughters Ford Focus ZX3. Its a great radio with iPod & USB interfaces. It up to her to add HD or Sat Radio tuners.

My only wish is that it had RDS but you can't have everything, it pretty much has everything else.

As I said before great product & great price, easy to install with the Crutchfield Installation gear.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I was hesitant to take on replacing the factory radio in my Honda but the Crutchfield team was great in taking me by the hand and assisting me on multiple phone calls. I find this radio to be awesome. I have it installed with the USB jack mounted permanently on the faceplate below and the XM Satellite dedicated receiver tucked in behind. The radio is very easy to operate, sounds VERY good in all types of music that I've tried - Jazz, Classical, Rock, Violin, Piano and Voice. I wish it had a front mounted 'Aux' in but have now found with all the various methods I've tried to put my music in that it may be redundant. The USB input even accepts my portable WD 120 GB harddrive! Well done Alpine and especially the Crutchfield team.

    Great Reveiver!

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This Alpine is awesome! It has enough power to be loud and have clear sound. I love the display, plus it has the option of no display so you can see the road better at night and still listen to music. Great features and a great product.

    Good unit but...

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I like the controls and the screen. I am not happy with the sound. Unit only has bass and treble adjustments. Music does not sound "full". I have added new speakers and a 4 channel amp but still is not right. What kind of makes me angry is now I have to buy a Audio Processor and a MultEQ Tuning kit so I can take full advantage of the features and sound output of this unit. I do not recommend buying this unit or any other Alpine unless you plan on buying the audio processor too. This is my first Alpine. I have always bought Pioneer and have been very happy. I just hope that after I spend the money I am happy with the unit.

Used this stereo to replace the factory unit in my sons 2006 Tacoma PreRunner, and it works very well. He is a big IPOD user and this radio interfaces with the Ipod very nicely. He is very happy with the sound, and features.

Great sound but buggy with accessories

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Purchased this for an update to an aftermarket stereo. Wanted to be able use use my iPod, USB memory stick, and be able to receive HD radio with
    the optional interface.

Sound from this unit is incredible. Plug and play in my VW with the adapter harness and antenna amplifier that Crutchfield supplies.

iPod menus leave something to be desired, but workable. It DOES work with my 3rd generation iPod, and charges the device.

I have had a constant problem with the HD radio module. The antenna connects to the HD module. When I start the car, stereo oftentimes does not detect the HD module, therefore begins in tuner mode. When this occurs, no radio because of the antenna connection. There is no rhyme or reason why this occurs. Both the stereo and the HD module have been replaced with the same behavior.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Great sound. I'm running 4 Polk Audio db 651s6-1/2" Slim 2-way Speakers in a 2002 Chevrolet Avalanche Sport Utility Truck. The unit pushes the Polks to great sounds. This is my 3rd Alpine but it's been over 15 years since my last one. With this price you can't go wrong. Very user friendly
interface. Looks great with the Bio Lite display. I put in level 3 dim mode and it was perfect for me since my unit is at the top of the dash.

    Pros
-Alpine clean sound wtih plenty of power that will out do any factory unit.
    -iPod Control.
    -Great Specs.
    -Aux in.
    -Nice price.

I really can't find any cons but if I had to grip I would list these even though it really doenst matter.

    Cons
-No paper owners manual instead it's on the cd.
-The little quick start manaul is a waste of paper.
-I wish they intergrate the SAT radio in the unit instead of SAT ready.

Crutchfield is by far the fastest shipping and best tech support that can be found. I have ordered from them at 2:00PM and get my order by 1:00PM the next day. 24 hour free delivery is unheard of, but not with Crutchfield.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Installed into a 2005 Toyota Tacoma. Install looks great as always. This was my 4th or 5th Crutchfield install. Always no issues. Wiring diagrams and details were more than sufficient.

Very easy install. Be sure and purchase the KCE- 220UB USB extension cable if you want USB access. It has a nice capture feature to prevent the cable from becoming disconnected from the pigtail coming out of the head unit. Both cables (IPOD and USB) are long enough to run from the head unit, down the center console into the center glove box, with extra cable. Very nice. IPOD Touch works great.

Head unit sounds infinitely better than the Toyota stock unit. Much better FM reception too.

    What you'd expect from Alpine

Written By Timothy, New Mexico on Wednesday, December 17, 2008

I owned an Alpine deck a few years ago, and I loved it. So, after buying a new car, I knew I wanted an Alpine deck once more.

I was looking at the CDA-9884, but decided to get this one since it had more features. And I feel it looks nicer.

I was very happy with this purchase. It took minimal time to set up, and had many of the features i loved from the previous unit (changing treble/bass frequencies). It came with it's own iPod connection cable, which allowed the USB plug to be used for whatever else you need (i.e. thumb drives, or even a charger for your phone). If you feel the display is too bright, there's a dimmer function as well and the ability to "black out" the faceplate.

Yet another Alpine product i am very happy with!

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Nice unit, nice features, great display. I own a 2006 Frontier Crew Cab and was aware that the unit did not fit, as advised by Crutchfield. I have a friend who owns the same vehicle and purchased the unit so I was aware of any modifications that needed to take place, which were minor to say the least.

The sound quality is excellent and allows a wide array of sound tuning options. I tweaked with sound tuning for nearly 2 weeks before I concluded that the acoustic characteristics of the vehicle just could not be overcome to obtain the sweet spot my critical ear desired.

I purchased the PXA-H100 IMPRINT Audio Processor along with the KTX-H100 MultEQ Tuning kit and I must say the difference left me in awe. The imprint unit opens up a whole new array of features on the head unit, but I haven't even bothered. Once I took the initial acoustical measurements and had the Imprint processor/software analyze the cabin sound; it compensated with correction curves that I loaded into the head unit and all my problems are solved.

The resulting sound is phenomenal!! The value far exceeds the extra $ spent just from the time saving aspect alone.

    Nice job Alpine/Audyssey Labs!

    Great Value

    Pros
+Excellent screen that is completely visible in direct sunlight
+iPod control is the best I have ever used. I can find any song in my 20,000+ song library in 30 seconds.
+SQ is very good. This is among the best sounding units you can get in this price range.
+Much better FM reception compared to my previous Panasonic HU.

    Cons
-I have to buy an adapter for aux in?
    -Accessories are very overpriced
-Instead of clicking down on the volume knob ala the iPod click wheel, you're "select" button in iPod navigation is off to the side of the wheel. Seems like a poor choice to me.
-No color choice for your buttons. Stuck with blue.

Overall I am VERY satisfied with this unit. While not perfect, it sounds great and is intuitive to use. And in the end, those are the most important traits of a good head unit.

Awesome product for the money. If your not trying to break the bank then this is the receiver for you. The controls are easy to use and the display is great as well. Love the biolite display. The receiver does a superb job at powering my infinity speakers in my 04 4 runner and looks good while doing it. The included ipod cable is a nice addition as well. Ipod controls are good, I recommend setting up playlists on your ipod to make song searching much easier through the reciever.

Nice unit but a small warning

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

If you have the latest generation Ipod Nano, the unit will not charge or turn off the Ipod. Crutchfield was nice about it and sent me the "fix" cable but it still didn't charge. So I called and was told that Alpine has not addressed this issue with the latest Nano's. Still works great but you have to remember to unplug your Ipod or it will coninue playing and run the battery down faster.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Wanted to replace factory radio/cassette player with a head unit that utilizes and charges iPod and has CD player. Have 2002 Civic LX sedan with manual shift and last time I installed an audio equipment was 30 years ago. Took about 5 hours to install from start to finish. Wow, what an improvement! Even with factory speakers, the music sounds much clearer and more powerful. (It is of note that I now know that my left rear speaker is not working well while adjusting balance and fade.) The control is fairly easy to understand. Connected 3rd generation iPod mini, and it works seamlessly. Searching a song does take a bit of time and is little frustrating that one needs to start all over again rather than where you were before to search another song, it is workable. The ability to remove the front panel is important to me in that the place I work is high risk area for theft. The plastic case to house the panel is a nice touch. I like the Bio-Lite, which is clear to read even in the sun. Mute button is actually a nice feature when you are ordering food at Burger King drive thru or talking to someone in the car. Remote control is functional, works in place of steering wheel control, which would be extra expense. FM/AM radio and CD player work well, and I have not yet tried USB connection. Overall, as my 5 star indicates, I am extremely happy with this purchase in terms of quality, functionality and affordability.

Great value and product, easy to install

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

First off, I received this product and all of the installation gear about a week ago. It took me about an hour to assemble the wiring harness completely, once I had all the necessary tools (make sure you have a wire stripper/crimper). After the wiring was done, it took me about 2 hours to install it in my car. It would have been much quicker but things are a little more complicated with my car. The instructions that Crutchfield sends are awesome. They are extremely easy to follow, clear, and include pictures in case there is any confusion. Don't waste $75-100 getting it installed by a "professional." This was my first time ever installing a car stereo, and I was able to do it with no problem.

The radio functionality gets 5 stars as well. I have a huge music collection, and now I never have to take my CDs with me and have them pile up in the backseat of my car, thanks to the iPod controls. I can listen to whatever I want at any time. The iPod search features can be somewhat slow, but what do you expect when you have to navigate through so many different options? I only have the factory speakers in my car but the sound with this stereo is great.

I highly recommend this stereo, especially if Crutchfield sends you the installation gear and instructions. I saved almost $200 by ordering from Crutchfield and doing everything myself.

Do not buy for USB Interface

Written By Daniel, Baltimore, MD on Saturday, November 22, 2008

I will only go into how horrible the USB interface is.

It does not allow you to navigate up/down a directory tree when using a USB memory stick.

For example your directory tree looks like the following:

    \Beatles\Hard Day's Night\*.MP3s
    \Beatles\Yellow Submarine\*.MP3s
    \Eagles\Greatest Hits\*.MP3s
    \Eagles\Long Road Out of Eden\*.MP3s

When doing a search, you scroll the following list:

    Hard Day's Night
    Yellow Submarine
    Greatest Hits
    Long Road Out of Eden

If you put a sound file in the two higher level directories you can get the following list:

    Beatles
    Hard Day's Night
    Yellow Submarine
    Eagles
    Greatest Hits
    Long Road Out of Eden

Alpine really messed up. It should have been like navigating a directory structure. The first list should have been:

    Beatles
    Eagles

Directories should be shown even if there are no sound files in the directory. Hitting enter on the Beatles should then display the subdirectories it contains.

If a directory contains sound files in addition to subdirectories it should list the subdirectories first followed by the sound files. But NO, Apline didn't do this. Instead you have to search through every album name. You cannot organize you music on the USB stick.

Also, it appears that subdirectories are listed in reverse alphabetic order. How wierd is that?

Lastly, you cannot hit station preset buttons to jump large numbers of files (10%, 20%, etc.).

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I've been kickin' around the idea of buying a new HU for a long time, but couldn't find what I was after.
I bought 1 for my wife, installed it and quickly fell in love with it. The sound quality is great. I love the USB port for the ability to use a flash drive, no more scrathed CDs. Also it was the only deck I found with the 4 volt pre-amps. The sub control is a nice feature as well. The settings are easy the adjust, the buttons are large and easy to read, and the remote is the only way to go!!!
I kept looking for something else for my work truck, but couldn't find anything better for the money, so I finally bought 1 for myself. It's a great HU with lots of flexibility, simplicity, and power. It a good HU for a monster SPL or SQ system, but is just right a home in the dash of a grocery getter as well.

Great head unit, great features, great sound
