Our take on the Alpine CDE-102

by Zak Billmeier
Alpine

Why replace your factory radio?

Two good reasons - sound quality and cool features. A new car stereo offers power that's superior to most factory radios, along with more sophisticated tone controls. And most car stereos offer built-in or optional features that add safety and fun to life in your car, including inputs for your iPod or MP3 player, Bluetooth connectivity for hands-free cell phone calls, satellite radio or HD Radio reception, and connections for building an audio system in your car.

Alpine Authorized Online Dealer

Alpine designed this receiver for great sound

Alpine's CDE-102 CD receiver offers front-panel USB and auxiliary inputs, giving you lots of playback options in addition to the CD slot. Connect an MP3 player or satellite radio to the auxiliary input, or plug a thumb drive loaded with music files into the USB input — either way, you've got plenty of entertainment to keep you company on the road.

your image description

Add Alpine's optional cable, and you'll get complete control over your iPod® or iPhone™ right on the stereo. Alpine's unique Percentage Search feature gets you through your playlist at warp speed, so you can find the song you want in no time.

Build a system

You'll find the two sets of preamp outputs handy for adding amps and subs to create a well-rounded system. You can fine-tune your sound using the adjustable bass and treble controls, while a built-in high-pass filter lets you remove low bass from your speakers, allowing your system to run more efficiently and sound better. Many stereos only let you adjust your subwoofer level, but the CDE-102 gives you control over the bass bandwidth and frequency, so you can tweak your system's low end to perfection.

Bluetooth convenience

Connect Alpine's Bluetooth® adapter to conduct safe hands-free calls with your compatible phone when you're driving. When a call comes in, your music is muted and you hear your caller over your vehicle's speakers. Your phone stays safe in your purse or your pocket, while you keep both hands on the wheel.

Note: If you're going to use your iPod with this receiver, be sure to check Hands-on Research for specific iPod model compatibility with this receiver or its optional iPod adapter.

    Display Features

Detachable Face: The unit features a single front loading CD face that detaches from the chassis to deter theft. The CD player comes supplied with a hard plastic face case to protect the detachable face when you have it off the chassis. A face-fixing screw is supplied for making the face non-detachable, if desired.

Dimmer: This unit is equipped with an illumination lead; when the unit's dimmer mode is set to Auto and the illumination lead is connected to your vehicle's headlight circuit, the display and button illumination will dim to a fixed, preset level whenever the headlights are turned on. If preferred, you may choose the Manual dimmer mode setting, so the display and button illumination is dim at all times.

    Audio Section

CEA-2006 Compliant: The specifications given by Alpine for the built-in amplifier comply with the CEA-2006 mobile amplifier power testing and measurement standards from the CEA (Consumer Electronics Association). All manufacturers who comply with the standard can display the CEA-2006 logo on their product.

    • CEA-2006 Power Rating: 18 watts x 4-channel
    • Max Power Output: 50 watts x 4-channel

Sound: The Sound Setting functions provide control over your system, so you can tailor the sound to your personal tastes:

    • Bass Control:
      • Bass Center Frequency: 60Hz, 80Hz (default), 100Hz, or 200Hz
      • Bass Band Width: 1 (narrow) to 4 (wide)
      • Bass Level: -7 to +7 (+/-14dB in 2dB steps)
    • Treble Control:
      • Treble Center Frequency: 10kHz (default), 12.5kHz, 15kHz, or 17.5kHz
      • Treble Level: -7 to +7 (+/-14dB in 2dB steps)
    • High Pass Filter (HPF): the speaker level and front line level outputs have a selectable crossover (HPF); off (default), 80Hz, 120Hz, or 160Hz
    • Loudness: Loudness introduces a special low and high frequency emphasis at low listening levels to compensate for the ear's decreased sensitivity to bass and treble sound at low volume

Dual Preamp Outs: There are two sets of preamp outputs; one is front and the other is switchable between rear and subwoofer. Both are 2 volt/10 kΩ. When the subwoofer is turned on (the second preamp output is set to sub) its output level is adjustable from 0 to 15. You can select either System1 or System2 for the desired subwoofer effect.

    • Subwoofer System 1: subwoofer level changes according to the main volume setting
    • Subwoofer System 2: subwoofer level change is different from the main volume setting; even at low volume settings, the subwoofer is still audible

Power IC Off: When an external amplifier is powering all the speakers in the system, you can turn the internal amp off, which will improve the sound quality.

Audio Mute: Activating the Audio Mute function will instantly lower the volume level by 20 dB.

Interrupt Feature: When a device having the interrupt feature (such as a cellular telephone) is connected to the receiver, the audio signal will be automatically muted whenever the interrupt signal is received from the device. The supplied wiring harness contains a pink/black Interrupt lead that needs to be connected to the device's interrupt signal connection.

    Radio Functions

    AM/FM Tuner: The Alpine CDE-102 features a built-in AM/FM tuner.

Preset Tuning: The built-in tuner provides 12 FM and 6 AM preset stations. Stations can be preset manually or automatically.

    Disc Playback

MP3/WMA/AAC Playback: This unit can play CD-ROM, CD-R, and CD-RW discs containing MP3, WMA, and AAC files recorded using the ISO 9660 Level 1 or Level 2 formats. MP3 files with bit rates from 8 kbps to 320 kbps, WMA files with bit rates from 48 kbps to 192 kbps, and AAC files with bit rates from 16 kbps to 320 kbps are supported. Variable bit rates are also compatible. Up to a maximum of 255 folders and 510 files per folder can be read from one disc. ID3 tags v1 and v2, and WMA tags are supported; track title, artist name, and album name ID3 tag data can be displayed.

Text/File/Folder Quick Search: When you are playing a disc with CD Text, ID3, or WMA tags, you can easily search for a track, file, or folder by its title. Once you have activated the search mode, you can use the rotary encoder to quickly scan through the titles to locate the desired track. For discs without CD Text, ID3 or WMA tags, searches are made using the track numbers associated with each song.

Angle Mounting: For proper CD playback, Alpine recommends mounting the CDE-102 no more that 35° above horizontal.

    Aux/USB/iPod Connection

Auxiliary Input: The front panel input is a 3.5mm mini-jack. You can input audio from an auxiliary source unit; such as a TV, DVD player, or portable unit. You can change the name on the display to match the type of device connected to the front panel input; Auxiliary, TV, DVD, Portable, or Game.

Your connected USB memory device may contain MP3 (8-320 kbps), WMA (48-192 kbps), or AAC (16-320 kbps) music files formatted in FAT 12/16/32. This unit will recognized up to 100 folders and 100 files per folder. The headunit will play back files on a USB memory devices with the same controls and modes as playback of CDs containing MP3, WMA, and AAC audio files.

Note: The headunit's USB port does not support Apple iPod or iPhone.

iPod Full Speed Ready: You can connect your iPod or iPhone to the headunit's rear-panel proprietary iPod Full Speed port (attached to rear chassis via 4" pigtail) using the optional Alpine KCE-433iV iPod Full Speed adapter cable (500KCE433I, sold separately), and get access to all of your iPod's stored music, right from the headunit. Vast improvement over the stock radio in this 90 Miata. Got it for a great
price though Crutchfield along with all the necessary peripherals to make the
installation very easy. Easy to use, great features. Will be able to upgrade
with amps, subwoofer etc. in the future but for now works nicely with basic
    speaker system in the car.

    Well Worth the Money

Written By Como651, MidWest on Sunday, March 27, 2011

Got this on sale for $89.99 and its been worth every penny. This unit has high
pass and low pass filters which allow you to tune your audio signals to match
with your speaker frequency range for optimum sound quality. Install is easy
and this deck puts out clear sound as all Alpines do. The accessory ipod cable
must be purchased separately and is a must if you own an ipod. You can use the
USB port or the auxiliary input also but the sound quality is diminished by
around 20% or more. This does not come with a USB cord or auxiliary cable so
you must buy these separately too. Memory sticks work great with this unit.
You can copy your favorite music files and folders to a memory card and plug it
into this deck via the USB port. It instantly reads all audio files and sorts
them by folder or file which you can search with the user interface. I have not
used the blue tooth capability so can't report on it.

Nice stereo for the money. It gives good quality sound as is, but I would definitely drop
the money on the 45wx4 inline amp for it. I have this paired with some Alpine 6x9s in the
front and some JL Audio 5 1.4 in the back of my Dodge Ram 1500. The sound quality is
excellent. Can't beat it for the price.

Great stero easy installation took 45 minutes and well worth the money, the only problem i had was that it would not recognize my ipod touch when plugged into usb port but it has an aux port so you can still use your ipod just not charge. But other than that such an easy stero to operate and love how it plays burnt cds!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Buy this well worth your money.

    Worked great at first

Written By John D, anch,ak on Wednesday, February 16, 2011

This deck worked great for over a year, then last week it started randomly resetting (or restarting, not sure what to call it). Now when I go to use it, I'll hit a button (doesn't matter which one), and the whole unit will shut off for about a second, alpine will appear on the screen, and then it will resume playing whatever it was about 2 seconds later. This continues to happen every time a button is pushed. This is extremely annoying and is definitely a problem with the unit itself, I've checked all the wiring and this problem only happens when a button is pressed; Wiggling on the faceplate doesn't do anything. I've bought alpine products for years, but am disappointed with this deck. What's more, this deck is now out of warranty (expired 2 months ago). I pulled this deck out and put back in my stock unit (lucky I kept it!) because it was so unusable like this.

    CDE-102

Written By Jay D, USA on Thursday, February 10, 2011

The CDE-102 is full of features, yet its also missing a few.

The pro's- GREAT sound quality, has aux input for a flash drive, Aux input mini-plug on the face and I-Pod control.

The con's- volume control requires too much rotation to get desired result, display doesn't show the time when the unit is OFF, time display may require several button pushes once turned on, while searching for a playlist, artist, song, etc in I-Pod mode, the display reveals only whatever txt can fit in 1 line of the display.

This unit is installed in a Jeep Cherokee and using all of the components as suggestd by Crutchfield, including the KTP-445 power amp. Still can not dim the display with the dash lights, the I-Pod does NOT charge unless the car is either running or in the key is in Aux position. The CDE-102 s not at all intuitive, even if you've owned Alpine's of past. The factory AM/FM/CD with 3 way EQ was far easier to use and of far better quality mechanically (the rotary knob on the Alpine feels like you could break it pretty easy). If you have a decent factory head unit, just keep it and upgrade the peripherals to get the desired result. The CDE-104 must be an older design for Alpine, its cheap and missing a few bells and whistles but, overall it will get the job done. At Crutchfield, you can expect to pay only slightly more than the cheapest price on the web, but customer service is the VERY BEST in this business... better than any walk-in stores !

Crutchfield made it easy! Took about 20 minutes to wire the adapters and tape it all up.
Then put the stereo in the cover plate, and took it out to the truck. Took about 5 - 10
minutes installing it, and everything worked great. It sounds good with stock speakers.
The bass treble, and other settings got it just right.

The receiver was exactly what I ordered, and was somewhat easy to install. Initially it
seemed that it would be a cinch to install the receiver, but it proved to be a rocky install
midway through. Eventually, my husband was able to come in and save the day. The
receiver is installed and works perfectly. The delivery was right on time for my husband's
birthday, and he couldn't have been more happy. Thank you Crutchfield team. You made
this purchase so easy that I really didn't have to overanalyze the purchase (which is

    Alpine CDE-102

Written By Matt W., Ottawa, ON on Friday, February 04, 2011
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

So far I've been very pleased with this player since I installed it in my '04 Ford Focus with a set of Rockford Fosgate R1682s. The ability to specify what frequency the bass and treble adjustments affect without the somewhat complicated adjustment menus I had on my old Pioneer from a few years back is pretty nice, and the radio tuner is a good step up from the factory CD player. I was surprised how much I had to turn up both my mp3 player and the receiver to get the AUX input to a good listenable level. If you are going to use a MP3 player with this unit, try to use one with a strong line out. The USB playback is quite good as well. It loads my 8GB drive in less than 5 seconds, and I've been able to use LAME encoded VBR mp3s with next to no trouble. The only reason I took a star off my rating is because of the somewhat large gap (1-2 seconds) I get when the player changes tracks/files. My computer and mp3 player do the track change seamlessly, and I was just hoping this new receiver would do the same. It's a small price to pay to be able to keep a large music selection in the car though, so it doesn't bother me too bad.

All in all, this is a great player for the guy that wants a basic receiver that just plays music and nothing else. It does that one thing, and it does it very well.

    Great Sound

Written By Edmond, Harpers Ferry West Virginia on Monday, January 31, 2011

Wonderful sound upgrade. Easier and more intuitive use than JVC's and Sony's I've
used. Only downside is it requires a proprietary Alpine cable to properly connect to the
iPod. Sounds great. Frequeny Turnover Points, band Q, and level are easy to set up
AND are individually adjustable for each source. Can't beat it for the price.

Bought this Alpine for my Saturn Ion after getting an iPod for Christmas. For the price, it can't be beat. I didn't replace the stock GM speakers in my car, but they are humming now with crystal clear sound thanks to this unit. Very easy to navigate the iPod using the stereo controls. You gotta buy the iPod cable, but that's fine. The cable is long enough to snake it wherever you want. Installation also a snap thanks to the Crutchfield instructions. Couldn't be happier with this purchase!!!

    parts
from Crutchfield were correct. Unit fits and works great in both vehicles.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

After hearing how Alpine has a top notch quality I bought this unit and installed it myself. It worked good for just a little over a year, and then problems started to happen. You needed to faintly touch the buttons, or the head unit would reset itself.....it has gotten to the point now where it cuts out for minutes and the screen isn't showing.....I checked the contacts on the back of the faceplate and they were fine.... all this started happening months out of the pathetic 1 year warranty....overall I am extremely disappointed in Alpine and this head unit. Then they wanted $95 for me to ship it to them and have them fix it!! I will be buying a different brand next time without a doubt.

Pretty good unit. Reasonably fast interface. More user friendly than most.

The first one failed, and customer service was great. Sent a new one quickly, and the new one is tits.

It seems to recognize a max of 100 songs per folder, i think sometimes slightly less. Max number of folders is unknown. maybe more/less than 100?

Sound quality is fantastic. running type g's through a v power 4 channel and 2 orion 12's on a v power 2 channel.

The alpine head unit gives a much better quality sound, and more finely tunable EQ than its competitors.

    I definetely recommend it.

A very nice little receiver. I completed the wiring harness one evening and
reviewed the mounting package the next. On Saturday morning I started the
removal of the old unit in my Toyota Echo and installation of the Alpine. I
chose Saturday to have time to iron out the kinks that always appear in these
projects. Lo and behold, in less than an hour, I had the old unit out and the
Alpine installed and working. The supplied instructions and mounting kit worked
great. And the sound of the new unit is MUCH better than the original unit. I
would recommend this Alpine unit and Crutchfield to anyone.

    EXCELLENT quality

Written By Anonymous, York PA on Monday, August 16, 2010

i bought this a few weeks ago on the "open box" shelf and put it in to replace my sony-gt240, and there is just no turning back wow where to start

first build quality is great, massive heat sync on the back, don't thing overheating will happen here, knobs and buttons feel very solid, nice screen that can be seen very easily even in the sun, usb slot feels durable enough to plug and unplug devices frequently without damaging

installation was EXCESSIVELY easy. especially like the rubber hoods and special connectors for the wires you are less likely to use so they can't short out anywhere.

sound quality was a MASSIVE leap up from my previous head unit, equalizer is very good, let me get my system just how i like it.

only con at all is that there is no way to completely disable the subwoofer from the head unit that i know of, DEFINITELY A GREAT BUY

Alpine CDE102 in a 90's Dodge diesel truck...

Written By Russell, Huntsville, Alabama on Friday, August 13, 2010
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I bought the deck and speakers all at once. I got the Alpine CDE102, and it seems like a good unit. One thing about Alpine is that they have large enough buttons to find and operate easily. I didn't see any other units with similar features that had the larger buttons. And the reviews were high on that unit. I was putting it in a mid-90s Dodge diesel truck, and the free kit had everything I needed. I did have to make some shims to insert under the deck to take all potential of movement out of it, but I could have used the mounting strap supplied in the deck kit for that (so, there was everything I needed between the manufacturer and Crutchfield's parts -- I just chose to not use the mounting strap). All of it looks professional with the kit. To go with this deck, I bought JL Audio TR600 and TR525 speakers with the suggested baffles, and the TR600's came with adapters to fit the 6x9 holes in the doors. That all worked perfectly. All of it sounds great and has enough volume to get over the noise of a diesel. Very good fidelity, plenty loud enough to get over the engine noise. Might could use a sub, but its so much better than the stock gear that I'm very, very happy with it as it is. Although, I'm considering getting the inline Alpine amp after seeing how easy Alpine made the install of the suggested amp. And, the Crutchfield instructions were flawless and specific to my make and model truck.

Good options, but needs some tweeks

Written By bluemel, Austin, TX on Sunday, August 08, 2010
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

My first concern is that (as was the case with my last Alpine unit) it takes forever to scroll through songs on my iPod when plugged into the adaptor. I have a lot a music on my iPod and it's very cumbersome to find the artists I want to hear while driving. The other option, that I find myself using more often now, is the the audio jack or USB input on the front of the unit. I just use my actual iPod to scroll through music, but then I often forget the extra steps of pausing my iPod and hiding it out of sight when I get out of my car. These also don't keep the iPod charged like the adaptor does. I paid additional $ for the iPod adaptor to keep it charged and so I could access my iPod through the stereo while it's hidden away in the glove box, but I don't really use it. Seems like a waste of money. Also, when controlling the iPod through the adaptor, it doesn't remember where I last searched. Every time I exit out of the search function, I have to start at the beginning of the alphabet again. Then I'm left to scrolling ever so slowly through my music again. I should be looking at the road more than at my stereo while driving. Second, the lights are WAY too bright at night. Alpine should include a light dimmer on this unit. It's very distracting and almost annoying when driving at night. Third, I wish that the stereo controls (volume & track skip) would integrate with my steering wheel controls.

    Great deck, great value!

Written By Steven, Bozeman, MT on Thursday, June 03, 2010
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I came to both Alpine and Crutchfield on recommendation from a friend and have not been disappointed. My first order came with a faulty wiring harness that burned out the first deck. Crutchfield support was great and shipped me a deck and wiring harness. This went into my '04 Subaru Legacy like a charm. I did the install myself this time and for a first-timer it was a breeze, approx. 20 minutes install time following the excellent included instructions from Crutchfield. Feels like a very high quality unit and sounds a ton better than the stock head unit. Integrated amp is good but I opted for an external amp. I highly recommend amping your speakers as they sound a lot better, but go with the Alpine power pack rather than a normal amp. My standard amp took all 4 pre-amp outputs and now I have nothing left for a subwoofer.

The USB functionality doesn't work with my BlackBerry Curve 8330 but works with my Sony Walkman. I don't like the USB on it though--it always starts at the same song, never remembers my shuffle setting, and can only recognize up to 100 folders (albums) with 100 songs per album so I can't even access all of my music.

Overall I'm very happy with my purchase, both from Alpine and Crutchfield, and have already recommended them to anyone looking for car stereo parts. I will likely replace it with an Alpine CDA-105 for the extra pre-amp outputs but not at all disappointed with it.

I bought this head unit to replace my factory stereo that was falling apart- after having it installed the sound is much better; however, the features supass the sound. Having the ability to just download music albums onto a usb drive, i rarely even use the auxilary jack with my ipod. the interface is extremely easy to use, and the aesthetics are also great. my only complaint is that alpine makes you buy an extra cable to hook up your ipod if you want better quality than the 3.5mm auxilary jack method, but since you can use a usb drive, i just resort to that.

    Excellent radio, easy to use

Written By Chris, Indiana on Monday, February 01, 2010
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Installed this in a 2008 Altima. This will install directly into the factory brackets for the stock radio. So I ordered a Nissan OEM double-din dash plate and had crutchfield send me their universal DIN pocket instead of the install kit. So the new dash piece matches the remainder of the trim and looks great. The harness and wiring kits worked perfectly. Doing the wiring took 45 minutes (connecting the harnesses with sealed butt splices) and the actual install took 25.

As for the radio, it does everything I need. Sound is excellent, radio reception is good and Alpine's quick search feature for music players is much better than other's I've tried. I can scroll through hundreds of songs instantly (ipod or usb stick) without hesitation. Using the sub out along with the high-pass filter is outstanding. High pass filter has 3 settings (60, 80 & 100 Hz) versus 1 which makes it a bit easier to tweak with a sub. Plus the sub level adjustment comes in very handy. Car sounds great. Also installed the add-on amp from alpine ktp-445. It really does make a difference though I imagine the speakers will have to be replaced soon. For the money, no question it was worth it for a solid radio/cd/mp3 player. The head unit and amp combination is really great!!! Highly recommended

I ordered this radio to replace the factory radio in my Nissan Altima. The directions from Crutchfield was great, it took me about 2 hours to install the radio. I'm far from a professional installer and everything went pretty smoothly. The biggest issue was removing the old radio and that wasn't that bad, I missed pressing some tabs to release the wiring harness from the radio. Crutchfield supplied all the correct wiring harnesses that really made it easy. I had considered going one of those local installers but their prices for the radio were higher and they wanted to change $40 for installation parts plus $50 for the install.

The radio sounds really good, much better than the factory. I have pretty simple listening needs and very satisfied with the radio.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I was looking for the cheapest MP3, subwoofer adjustable pre out and maybe thumb drive unit I could get. I almost got another brand until I noticed a 70 s/n ratio (this unit is 105)! But the other unit was cheaper plus ship plus bezel and wire adapter... then I got email with discount AND Alpine sale prices AND included free dash bezel, free wire harness and free shipping so total was same price as lesser brands. In the cart didn't have free ship or wire adapter but a quick call and they fixed that- so boom, done deal!

I guess maybe they frown on listing my price here but I'll just say it was fantastic for what you get- 2x discount and free, free, free. AND I ordered in the afternoon and it was delivered next day! I wish manual was printed- not on CD (?) as first thing you need to do is print it yourself but no biggie. Deck itself is awesome, looks great, sounds great, yet to skip cd, fairly loud, bit tinny to my ear but haven't fine tuned sound so...it has many many controls for sound and sub so getting ideal sound setup may take some tweaking over the next week or so. Manual doesn't say which set of RCAs is for sub, but used the bottom and works fine. I wish I could dim the lights a bit- rather bright but small gripe. Very happy with this purchase.

Tired of the Ford stereo in my truck -- a 2000 F250 Diesel - I puchased an all-Alpine
system of the CDE 102 receiver, the KCE-400BT bluetooth kit, and 4 SPS-507 speakers.
The result -- Awesome! Great, great sound and flawless operation. My Iphone plugs in
the adapter (or into the front Aux port) and the sound is as good as it gets. The speakers
rock the truck -- and I hear things in my music that I have bever heard before. The
receiver is very easy to operate and adjust. The blue tooth works perfectly, even with the
diesel engine noise. My wife says the bluetooth in the truck is better than my Lexus 600h
sedan! Nice job Alpine & Crutchfield -- I wish I had done this years ago.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I selected this unit because I wanted to have the capability to play music from USB drives and an IPhone in my 2001 Ford Explorer Sport without spending a lot of money.

I couldn't be more pleased with either the unit or the service from Crutchfield. Their wiring harness, dash kit, and instructions made installation a snap. It took about 2 hours from start to finish to install the unit. Their attention to detail (e.g. providing a tool to get the old stereo out) made the whole process go smoothly.

Understanding how to navigate through folders and find particular songs on USB drives can take some learning for any of these units. I found this easy enough after reading through the instructions and working with the unit in the car. I would highly recommend printing the instructions (they come on CD) and keeping a copy in the car for the first few hours.

Note that controlling the iPhone from the unit requires the additional iPod adapter cable. Instead, I just hooked the iPhone up using the Aux input on the front of the unit and use the controls on the iPhone to select tracks.

Great iPod Compatable Deck for the Price

Written By Alaskan05, Anchorage, Alaska on Friday, November 20, 2009
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This is a great entry level deck with a built in iPod interface. The Deck didn't come with the interface cable. Interface is smooth, and comparable to alpine's CDA-9884, which I owned previousally. The bass output / power is definately improved with the Loudness control turned on. I am using the deck to push 1 10" Solobaric Sub powered by an alpine MRP-M350 amp, and the deck is more than adequate for that. In short, the deck works great, but an additional amp makes a big difference in the overall sound. Great deck for the Price, and Crutchfields provided installation equiptment makes the install seamless. Would Recommend!

I was looking to hook up my iPod, Blackberry, and SIRIUS and everything is perfect. I used the front input to plug in my SIRIUS and Blackberry, and I can use my phone with the factory speakers!! Good bye uncomfortable Bluetooth headset! The sound is perfect and with the harness I got, even the factory sub kicks.

    Poor MP3 support

Written By MF, SoCal, CA on Thursday, September 24, 2009
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Sound quality is quite good, but unfortunately this Alpine has trouble playing most MP3 files via USB stick. I only found 2 files out of about 50 that it would play. Another gripe -the volume push is way too sensitive. When wanting to simply change the volume I would always press it and end up in the altering the sound settings. I returned it and got a JVC instead, it's way better.

    OK FOR THE PRICE

Bought this to replace a factory Delco radio in '04 GMC Sierra 1500. For the price you really get quite a few features. I wouldn't call it an audiophile's unit of choice, but if you're a joe six pack like myself it does everything I need it to do. Sound quality if ok, ability to play MP3 and WMA files is nice. I personally find the USB port to be really handy. It has l/r preouts but no sub preout, so if you plan on running a monster system with 4-6 speakers+subwoofer you're better off picking a higher priced unit with a better feature set. I paired this with Alpine's little KTP-445 power pack and it works just fine. Tuning the sound is a little tricky but once you get the hang of the controls and understanding the various options you'll be good to go.

    Alpine CDE-102

Written By Allen, Tucson AZ on Tuesday, July 28, 2009
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I purchased this receiver to replace the factory unit in my 02 Trooper. I
wanted a receiver that had both USB and AUX on the front panel and had
the selection narrowed down to this unit and the Kenwood MP342U. I
checked out both units locally and decided on the Alpine. It seemed to
sound better, text on the display was easier to read, and because of the
performance/reliability of an 8 year old Alpine unit in my other car

Installation was cake. Removed stock unit. Swapped mounting brackets.
Soldered harness. Installed new unit. Start to finish, 2 hours. Do to the
console trim I need to go back and tweak the position of the unit so I can
add the bezel. Still looks fine without it. Should be easy enough.

WOW!! This unit sounds GREAT! What a difference in sound quality over the
stock unit, even with the stock speakers. Sound is clean and crisp according
to my wife and way too loud according to my daughter.

The controls take a little getting used to but they're fairly intuitive and
easily learned. I wish it would display the song titles when searching
though. I also wish it would automatically detect/select USB or AUX devices.
I do like that it charges our MP3 players while plugged in.

Overall, for the price point, I am very, very happy with this unit. Sounds
great, looks great, and if anything like the one in my other car, bulletproof.
We're actually looking at buying 2 more for the other cars. And of course,
    Crutchfield is the best.

    Great head unit

Love it, I wanted a relatively cheap HU that could play my Ipod touch and this does just that. Instead of dealing with the whole Ipod connectivity cable and controlling song/artist selection through the display, I simply bought an aux cord and play my IPod through that the aux input on the front of the faceplate, and it works and sounds great..couldnt be happier!

I've always used alpine stuff and it never lets me down. This is a great entry-level head unit for basic audio but with alpine quality componentry. The sound controls are a bit counter intuitive, but once you read the manual its easier to get the swing of things. If you're looking for a simple, inexpensive cd player for playing media files from a thumb drive or your ipod, this is a good choice. kisses

I was amazed to find an Alpine for this price. It's 10 times better than a comparable Sony that I had in another car a few years back. Very nice unit that adds quite a bit of life to my factory amp and speakers, and it looks good too. Installation was very easy; had one question which was quickly answered by Crutchfield support.

Alpine Sound at a Discount Price

Written By Troy, Grants Pass, OR on Thursday, June 18, 2009
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I purchased this to replace the factory deck in my 2000 4Runner. I was worried that this might be a lesser quality head unit that Alpine put out for discount buyers, but I can't fault the sound one bit. If this is your price range, I think you'll find this VERY hard to beat.

Installation was a snap. I chose crimps over solder since that's what I had available. It slid right in place with the install accessories Crutchfield provided.

Once I familiarized myself with the controls, I found it very intuitive and easy to use. The auto-station programming found our favorite radio stations no problem. The CD sound is clean and clear like it should be. This really is Alpine sound and I'm not even using an amplifier and still have the factory speakers. This is a MAJOR upgrade and all I changed was the head unit.

I haven't used the AUX or USB inputs or the Bluetooth connector so I can't review them. However, their menu selections are easy to find and seem simple enough to use.

This was an amazing find and, for the price, we were able to purchase a second one for my wife's 2002 Jeep Liberty. The upgrade in her ride was equally impressive.

If you're looking at anything close to this price range, I strongly recommend the CDE-102. We were looking a little below this but, considering how much time we'll spend using it, an extra $20-$30 bucks for this amount of performance increase is well worth it. I've always liked Alpine decks and this budget priced model is no exception.

    Really good for my money

Written By Charles, western Tennessee on Thursday, May 28, 2009
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I bought the CDE-102 based on (1) the overall good reputation of Alpine audio, (2) the positive reviews on Crutchfield.com, and (3) the front panel USB and AUX inputs. The unit lived up to my expectations; it readily plays MP3 files from a jump drive (although it takes a bit of ID3 tag editing to control the playback order.) As an added bonus, I can control my iPod Shuffle with the CDE-102 from the USB port (an unadvertised feature.) My only complaint is that the time will not display when the unit is off.

I am not an audiophile, so my comments on the sound quality aren't worth much, but it sounds better on my stock speakers than the factory unit.

The best part was the price from Crutchfield: $0 for the wiring adapter, $0 for the faceplate trim to fit my van, $0 for the antenna adapter, and $0 for shipping. The price for all this locally was over $220, and with the help of the installation instructions from Crutchfield, I put the CDE-102 in myself in about two hours.

    Thanks, Crutchfield.

    Great Sound & Options

Written By papahood, Peoria, Il on Saturday, May 23, 2009
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I'll start off by saying this receiver is awesome. Lots of features to play with. Sound is very crisp and clear and it picked up all the stations I normally listen to right away with no static. I put this in an 05 mitsubishi galant and it really brought out a whole new great sound to my factory speakers. The USB input is by far my favorite part. These radios have come along way since the mp3 player playing through an old cd tape. Just load up some songs on your usb, plug it in and your good to go!!

The whole installation was a breeze. The hardest part was soldering the wires together, but even a novice can figure that out. Once i was past that ...pulling out my factory radio and putting in this one took all of 10min.

Now for the one star I took off. The install was very easy..however when trying to snap my dash trim back on over the radio, the facia trim on the new receiver was too long. I could not get it squeezed in there without either breaking it or putting a stress fracture on it somewhere. It took me an xtra hour or so sanding down the little rectangular trim carefully on each side to make sure it fit ok. I called about this and they really had no other solution..I do think their instructions were good , but no mention of this little problem anywhere when i bought it.

    One fine unit!

Very easy install, but I doubt that it would have been had I bought this anywhere but Crutchfield. The additional parts and install guide made it a cinch! If I'd have just recieived the unit alone, probably not so easy, as the manual that comes with it leaves much to be desired. Looks and works great in my old Camry. Like another reviewer, I bought this mainly for the front USB (and the price). I use a 16GB mini which is hardly noticeable and supplies me with tons of tunes. Leave it plugged in, switch to the radio, then switch back and it picks up right where it left off. The only thing I've noticed is that some of the MP3 tags scroll, while others don't. No biggie as the music plays fine. It also took a bit of detective work to figure out how to balance/fade the speakers, but all is well now. Kudos to Crutchfield. The unit arrived quickly and well packaged, and as mentioned before their 'extras' made this a most satisfying experience.

    Extraordinary unit!

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This is my second Alpine head unit and completely raises the bar for sound quality and features. I have this setup with an Alpine MRP-F240 amplifier bridged to my front component speakers. I am running the two rear stock speakers off of the CDE-102's internal amplifier, I love having the option to apply a high-pass filter to my rear speakers if needed! The amount of illumination that dims when the headlights are turned on is perfect, not too bright like my previous unit from 2004. Now I won't be distracted by a blinding cd player anymore at night. The display text is easy to read during the daytime and not too bright during the night - it's perfect. Once I powered on the unit and adjusted the audio settings, I noticed an improvement in sound quality over my previous unit. The convenience of having the Aux input on the front allows me to stream Pandora and Slacker Radio straight from my iPhone, as well as using a USB stick when desired. In conclusion I am 100% satisfied with this purchase and would not hesitate to recommend it to anybody.

Great head unit...Alpine always has and still does make the best!!..This was a replacement for my factory radio in my 2008 Altima. The sound difference was amazing!! My stock speakers sound like I replaced them, crisp highs and tight bass. The only thing is the USB input, its a little fickle. sometimes it will read my flash drive, and other times it says "searching" and stays like that. Not sure if its my drive or the radio. Has anyone else encountered this problem?? But aside from that, greta radio, and Crutchfiled was great as well, they now have me as a customer.

Nice for entry level USB stereo

Written By Jaybrewski, Worcester, MA on Wednesday, May 13, 2009
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I'm comparing the Alpine reciever to the Kenwood KDC-MP638U I have in my summer car. Note cost wise the Kenwood was ~$40.00 dollars more last year.

Overall I'd say the Alpine is a nice entry level USB reciever but the display is somewhat limiting in its use. If you're going with a USB reciever and play to your thumbdrive or Ipod I'd recommend one with a larger display.

On the Kenwood the user can see multiple folders while using the scroll wheel to select the folder in question and then can see multiple tracks while using the scroll wheel to go through the song list. The Alpine displays the currently selected folder and then can navigate to the song in question by repeating button presses until reaching the song to be played one folder and one song at a time.

    Ergonomics -
For the driver I think the Alpine has a very nice layout that makes the unit easy to use. With the majority of the operations being completed from the left of the radio. On the other hand if you wanted to have the passenger select a song or browse the thumbdrive etc the reciever doesn't lend itself well to the task due to the controls being on the left hand side.

    Take it easy
    Jay

    Great USB capabilities

Written By Peter, Indiana on Wednesday, May 06, 2009
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I bought this unit mostly because of the front USB port. I like to download podcasts and listen to them during the commute. The Alpine handles USB files well. You can even unplug the USB drive while it is playing and plug it in later and the radio will almost instantly start playing where it left off!.

You can skip from one file folder to the next, or skip between files. It even has a pause/play button which comes in handy when you get a phone call or have to stop to have a conversation.

I even tried plugging in my second generation iPod Shuffle and it could read and play files off of that too, something my Clarion couldn't do.

If I had any complaint it would be that the radio does not play the files based on the MP3 tag track number information, rather it plays the files in alphabetical order. I haven't tried using a playlist yet to see if it honors that.

    Overall, an excellent buy!

I have one of these in my wifes 2000 Legacy so I bought one for my 2005 Outback. The Outback is a harder install, but Crutchfield sends everything you need, with the new dash panel and instructions to install it, a little tricky, but in the end it looks great in the dash.
Still new to it so I'm working on adjustments to make it sound better with the existing factory speakers. I may just buy speakers too. Then maybe an amp.
    This is fun.

Happy, happy, happy, happy. - Just received the unit today, and easily installed it, and it works great.

I have been thru 4 other radios in the past 6 weeks. They all had problems.

#1 - Alpine CDA-9886 CD Receiver CD Receiver. Lettering on display too dim and the majority of display screen used up by worthless graphics.
#2 - Valor DD-858W Double Din DVD Receiver. Impossible to see in any form of daylight.
#3 - Dual XHD-6425 HD Radio/CD Receiver. HD tuner built in not able to be turned off. Stations frequently going in and out of HD. VERY annoying.
#4 - Kenwood DPX503. Ten colors to choose from for display. All except plain white. Very difficult to see in any daylight. Even with contrast up all the way, and even tried reversing the screen positive to negative. Forget it if you wear sunglasses.

So finally I've hit the jackpot. This has all the features I wanted and easy to use. Nice bright white dot-matrix display. Hooray!

I just replaced the stock unit in my Subaru WRX STi, and wanted a quality head unit with Auxiliary/iPod capabilities. Most importantly, I didn't want to break the bank. The deal I got was amazing- the stereo is already discounted, and Crutchfield threw in the wiring harness, the DIN pocket adapter (my original deck was a double-DIN size) and the instructions for free, along with free shipping. I did the installation myself, and everything works like a charm. This head unit sounds great, and it would have cost me easily twice the price to get it installed locally. This is my 2nd Alpine deck, and I highly recommend their electronics. You get what you pay for- it's true you can find cheaper head units out there, but I've never had any problems with Alpine.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I ordered this head unit a few days ago online. The whole process was very simple. I originally was going to go for a more expensive unit, but due to budget limitations and impatience, I ordered this unit. I read all of the previous reviews and agree with them all. This Alpine woke up the factory Monsoon system in my 2001 Volkswagen Jetta GLX. I already knew that the factory speakers where pretty good, but my CDE-102 comes through loud and clear in all modes. The antenna adapter that was supplied, actually seems to boost my FM signals, as I believe was already mentioned. Installation was fairly straight forward and very painless.

If you are tossing around the idea of getting a higher end unit, check yourself and see if you actually need to add more confusion to your ordering process. Don't hesitate to get this Alpine CDE-102.

It is very much worth the entry fee and then some.

    Full featured

Written By autopilot!, Seattle, WA on Saturday, March 07, 2009
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Similar to the other reviewer's comments, I thought the initial sound on the unit was a little thin compared to the stock unit, not bad, just different. I have since gotten used to it, but with more use I plan to adjust and tweak the EQ. I think the other problem was mp3 artifacts on the high end. That's not the deck's fault.

Usability is great, thus far I have not consulted the manual for anything and have been able to set the clock, adjust EQ, play CD/radio/flashdrive, etc. It's so easy to use, and I like that each button has multiple uses. The "mute" button is surprisingly useful if you get a phone call or if you want to have a conversation. I looked at many stereos before choosing this one, and the main reason I chose this one is ease of use. The main features you will regularly use are all on the driver side. Main knob for volume, skip, mute, and source/radio band. I think this is important when you are driving. If a radio is complicated with multiple knobs and poorly designed locations, you are more likely to get in a wreck.

The face of the stereo can be removed and comes with a simple plastic case with a foam piece on one side. It is secure and safe. The main volume knob has a nice rubberized outside that is soft to the touch. The overall styling is perfect in terms of quality, look, colors, and feel. Blends perfectly in our Nissan Sentra.

The price is so good I am going to be buying a second one of these decks for my other car in the next month.

Great value for the buck! Actually worth more. Sound Quality is vast improvement over Toyota highlander factory stereo, and better than my Pioneer aftermarket unit.Still using factory speakers because the fronts are two piece setup , backs will go first.Reception is way better than both above mentioned radio's too. Easy set up and adjust are easy too. My wife drives this car daily and will not tolerate jumping thru hoops like alot of new style head units. She can navigate the menu when needed and loves the lighting. The only thing I would change is when you switch from tuner to CD or back, you have to scroll thru all 4 input selections to get back. I think it should have an auto detect and only give the optioiins of what are plugged in at the time .Other than that its a great stereo.

    Awesome Alpine

Written By Marty, S.E. Michigan on Sunday, February 08, 2009
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

At first I thought this radio was a bad purchase - it just sounded tinny and lacked a lot of bass. The factory radio sounded far superior. Then after reading the owners manual (including the downloaded version from the Alpine site) it was evident there was a small learning curve needed to tune up the sound.

Once I learned how to tweak the sound, it was absolutely awesome. This head unit rocks! It has sweet highs and rumbling bass.

That is not to say the bass is unlimited, my vehicle has the factory optional hi-performance speakers it was built with and no sub woofer. With the speaker drivers this vehicle was built with, it simply rocks. I can't imagine how good it would sound if the drivers were upgraded.

You have to play with the centering of the bass & treble frequencies and the spread in order to tweak it in, and those who do not understand how that works may have trouble. However the manual does a great job of decribing those functions and if the user has any audio experience at all, setting it up should not be a problem.

This is a great buy and with front panel USB and AUX ports, and options for bluetooth and external amps, etc., this unit is hard to beat.
