Overview

Our take on the Alpine CDE-121

Play and charge your iPod® or iPhone® through this sweet-sounding Alpine CD receiver. Just connect your player to the CDE-121's front-panel USB input, and you can use the rotary controller to search for tunes. And it's no problem if you have a lot of music — Alpine's Percentage Search lets you jump through your list quickly using the radio preset buttons.

More ways to play your music
The CDE-121 will play your CDs, plus discs you've loaded with MP3, WMA, and AAC files. You can also load your files on a USB thumb drive and pop it in the front USB input. The front auxiliary input comes in handy for connecting a Dock & Play satellite radio or another portable player.

Adding on
A set of subwoofer preamp outputs provides a convenient connection for an amp & sub combo or a powered sub, and you can use the subwoofer level control to dial in the right amount of bass. Then fine-tune your sound using the adjustable bass and treble controls. One more cool feature — this receiver works with Alpine's Power Pack, a compact box that hooks up easily to your receiver, boosting its power from 18 watts up to a serious 45 watts RMS per channel.

iPod note: If you're going to use your iPod with this receiver, be sure to check "Details" for specific iPod model compatibility with this Alpine.

Installation Note: This receiver's preamp outputs are intended for subwoofers only. This Alpine won't work with wiring harnesses or OEM adapters that require a receiver with preamp outputs.

I've been an alpine fan since day one of doing sound systems. Especially their deck and amps. Great deck for the price. I have 4 alpine decks one per vehicle, from DVD deck to this deck and all is good.

    Amazing value for price

KingKalypso from West Union, IA on 10/31/2015

This is an exceptional head unit for the price with the built in amplifier. It may not be the most modern but it does what it's supposed to and the ease of use is amazing. I had this exact head unit stolen and I loved how easy to use and we'll built it was I bought it again instead of upgrading. Extremely impressed, would highly recommend!

Pros: -Cheap price for a good unit -Multiple inputs -Built in amplifier -Durable

    Cons: -Outdated -No Bluetooth/Smartphone Connectivity

    Nice, Inexpensive Upgrade

Greg C from Prattville, AL on 2/17/2013

For the price, you're not going to get the world and the Alpine CDE-121 does not promise it either. However, what it does promise is an aural experience that is moderately improved over the factory system in your vehicle. After wiring it myself, I was surprised at the quality of the sound I was getting out of the head unit. I could finally hear the single factory speaker in the back door of the Jeep Grand Cherokee I was installing it in and it actually sounded like it had some nice articulation that it just wasn't getting with the original head unit. Even the upgraded Pioneer 6 x9 2-ways in the front doors were sounding better, but sadly, the dash mounted tweeters were now lost in the action. You couldn't hear them that much anyways, even after putting them in there, so I'm probably going to take them out tomorrow. Even the bass and treble controls were a nice change, even though it did take a bit of practice to use them to their fullest. What I was pleasantly surprised by was the clarity even with non-HD radio. Ironically, I could now hear the stations fade in and out, even in the top 90% of reception. One of those tradeoffs they try to mask in the factory radios one could guess. The only negatives I have about the system are that it doesn't work with Android phones, and the fact that the dimmer isn't used. I may wire the dimmer to the unit's lighting to see if that would allow me to use it after I change the rear speakers tomorrow. Test Music: Avalon - Ace Combat Zero

Pros: No nonsense layout, large buttons, minimal setup time besides wiring, budget minded price.

Cons: Not as much customization as one would want, no dimmer, Mute doesn't completely mute, buttons might not impress some.

    Pros:

    Cons:

Improved my sound a lot, however..

Raymond from Cerritos, CA on 1/27/2013

If I was just to rate the improvement of sound quality, this thing gets 5 stars. For a unit at this price, this thing is great. But after using it for about a year, there are a few things I'm not too happy about. The blue buttons are always lit and they can get really bright at night. I want to listen to my music with the girlfriend in the car at night but the light ruins the atmosphere when you want to be in the dark. This thing would be perfect if it wasn't for that blaring blue light. Second, the buttons feel cheap. Not saying they are cheap quality but they feel cheap. Another thing that annoys me about this product is the iPod function. If you're like me who has 20+GB of music, it can take a while to get to the song you want. The unit lags a lot when you scroll through artists or albums or whatever. And I mean it lags A LOT. They offer a quick search function but it's still slow and not as convenient as Pioneer's quick search function. (My dad has a Pioneer in his car). Other than that, I'm pretty happy with this product. Never failed on me.

    Pros: Improved sound quality

Cons: Annoying blue light Lags and can take a while to find the song you want

I'm not happy with the below entry level eq settings. Should have researched furtherOnly have 2 makes it seem like it should be in the sub 75 price range. The usb and aux inputs are the good points. Haven't tested the usb yet. Basic button lay out which is good since I drive a stick and the less buttons the better. Not entirely happy, but I'm content for now.

Pros: Built well, usb and aux inputs, basic and easy layout

Cons: Poor eq settings, only 2 bands doesn't help when I have a poor speaker layout in a single cab truck. I need high highs and low lows. No included remote.

Over the years I have owned several Alpine uints, but had swiched over to Sony for a while ... needing a new unit I went to one of the box stores to check out the new line up of Sony and was very disappointed in the build quality. They seem to cheaping out. So back to Alpine I go... and just as I remember .. solid build quality ... the controls are straight forward, and the sound is great! The radio has great pull. As far as I am concerned you can't go wrong with this unit. (that is if these are the spec. you want) I love the USB mem. port ... 8 gigs of music you won't hear the same song in three weeks. Also, the ladies and gentlemen at Crutchfield are just the best! They will walk you through every option and help you at every turn. ... Bottom line ... if this unit suites your needs ... buy it.

Pros: Form follows function ... classic and streamlined ... great sound ... easy to use

    Cons: none so far

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I purchased this unit knowing it was a entry level type unit. That is okay because it sounds and feels very well made. There are sub outs located on the back of the unit and I connected an Alpine Power Pack amp to the speaker leads because there are no RCA outputs for speakers. I mainly use the unit with my Android phone using the AUX source and it works well. I also use an ipod touch in the USB mode and it works well too. My only problem has been using the USB mode with a flash drive, the folder tree you must navigate is a bit perplexing, but I'm counting on this to be my fault. Overall I can reccomend this unit to anyone interested in a entry level head unit for their vehicle.

    Pros: Price, build

Cons: No RCA outputs beside sub.

    Plays AAC Files

    Rich from Phoenix on 11/5/2012

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I bought this to get AAC playback to replace the basic unit in my wife's car and was limited to single DIN. There was no way I wanted to re-import 20GB of music into iTunes to get everything in mp3 format. I keep classical music on one 16GB micro flash drive and everything else on another drive, and listen to weekly podcasts from a CDRW.

Pros: AAC playback, CDRW support, USB port on front, good sound, enough power.

Cons: Terrible user interface - tiny buttons that can't be read while driving. Confusing fast forward and track selection buttons. No brightness control for display so it can't be read in bright light and is too bright at night.

    CDE-121: bang for the buck

JJ from Chesapeake Beach, MD on 10/25/2012

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The CDE-121 really gives bang for the buck. The basic controls are simple to use (no car crashes please) but one can go deeper into detailed settings while parked. The volume knob has a neat rubber grip, and though pressing this knob can lead to other settings, it is not too touchy. The digital display is adequate without being too distracting. The USB player works well - if you've never had one you are really missing out. I'll not be burning / mixing CDs for a while. Radio reception better than the other after market player. Installation in my 2004 Ford Escape was easy. Be sure to ask your Crutchfield advisor about the installation kit (frame & brackets) or wiring adapters. It will save you from frustration.

Pros: Good value, great features, easy to use, decent sound, has a USB player !!!

I am by no means a car "media player" expert. The Alpine CDE-121 had the USB and aux. ports on the front, with decent specs. I wanted something other than Kenwood, Pioneer or Sony. No real reason. I am older and sometimes these new fangled de-vices are difficult to learn. After I played with it for a while, the controls seemed to make sense and it became easy to adjust the sound... etc. The build quality looks good and feels solid. One thing that stands out is the improved radio reception over my old unit. "Opened box" stock. Good value.

Pros: Does what I want at a fair cost.

    Cons: time will tell...

Another great Alpine product....I have an older Alpine head unit in a different vehicle and being familar with the Alpine interface I decided to go with same brand...also a priority was value-based. For the price this is an outstanding value. I would have expected this quality and feature list to sell for 150+ easily. USB port on face is absolutely a dynamite feature. Sound quality is good, although I am only comparing it to crummy oem unit. It also has seperate sub-control, which I plan on adding in the future.

Pros: Price. Build Quality. USB and 1/8" jack on face! Removable faceplate. Very nice fitment in my Ford van dash.

Cons: You can change the frequency that the bass/treble primarily actuates, however you can't change each freq. independently.

I wanted this to use with an iphone, but I did not want to use the head unit controls to do so. I was just looking for a high quality unit without extra features I was not interested in.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I've had this in my 1996 Honda Accord LX sedan for about a month and it is great. I ordered the installation kit and wiring harness but did not actually need either. This was a replacement for a Pioneer unit that replaced the original so there had been a bit of soldering done already. It was nice and worth the money to have a wiring harness color coded the same as the instructions. Although this unit is rated at 18 watts vs the Pioneers 22 watts, the Alpine is has better volume and clarity that the Pioneer with same speakers. The control layout is terrific. The buttons used most are large, well labeled and intuitively placed. The only minor glitch is in using the unit to play music from my mp3 player in the Aux mode, that is from the mini jack output, the volume is very weak, even with the mp3 player, a Sony NWZ-E354, volume all the way up. Using in the mass storage mode works fine. I have not tried the Iphone/ipod mode. I do have an iphone but don't use it for music. Overall this has been perfect for me

Pros: Slipped right into the factory slot. Good sound, easy t use. Well marked and intuitive to me controls.

Cons: Aux via my mp3 player in the mini jack mode has weak sound but I'd never use it that way anyway. The four stars for coolness factor means I don't understand the question.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I installed this baby yesterday on my 2001 Honda Civic. Took me a few hours though because I'm very ignorant about this kind of stuff. The in-dash kit was a nightmare to work with because it came with unnecessary parts with no instructions on what to do with them and stripping and crimping the wires together was all new to me but that's for another review. The receiver installation was pretty easy. Learned how to crimp wires yesterday. The instructions are kinda vague but they work. The Alpine CDE-121 definitely improved the sound of my system. All four speakers plus two tweeters in my car are stock and this head unit definitely made it sound so much better. And I thought the stock head unit didn't sound to bad. There is definitely more clarity in my music. It sounds more "full". It offers a lot of bass but my speakers just can't handle that much. (i guess I'll have to add a sub later on). And the best thing is that it doesn't hurt to crank up the volume. I've only used the iPod and CD function and they're both great. I sadly forgot to plug in the antenna so I can't listen to the radio for now lol All in all, I'm very happy with the product. My dad had a Pioneer head in his car and I really liked it but I wanted to give Alpine a try since Pioneer and Alpine are very well-known and liked brands and I have to say, sound quality wise, Alpine wins.

Pros: Huge improvement in sound quality with stock speakers Relatively cheap USB, AUX, CD, and AM/FM It's an Alpine

Cons: Searching for songs on an iPod through the receiver can take a while if you, like me, have 20+GB of songs

    Basically Good!

    Anonymous from BC on 5/14/2012

I had a CDE-100 for a couple of weeks before upgrading to this. This deck offers a lot more features for not much more money. The biggest improvement is the USB search function, which the CDE-100 frustrated me to death. The sound quality is an improvement as well. I found the bass and treble frequency tuning useful, although preset EQ mode is missing. Now the negatives. The RCA output is for subwoofer only and cannot be turned off like the higher models. This means the output is always mono. This is not great for people looking to install an amp for running stereo full range front speakers. Another negative is that the tag display line is limited to about 15 characters even with scrolling turned on. Long song titles are cut off at its knees. More curious is that the CDE-100, a cheaper model, supports tag display line up to 30 characters. Come on, Alpine!

Pros: Works great, all the features I want, reasonable price, easy to use, setting the clock is intuitive (my last one was a nightmare).

Cons: The USB support is limited to 100 folders, and each folder can contain no more than 100 songs. It doesn't matter how big your thumb drive is, so you'll have to split up your collection into several if you have more than this.

Wanted to replace my factory 2006 F150 radio and speakers. First off, CRUTCHFIELD is TOP NOTCH.... This was my frist purchase and it was by far the best company that I have ever dealt with. I originally purchased another brand but after installing it, the buttons were all over the place and wasn't happy so one call to Customer Service and I sent it back and got this Alpine. This was the 2nd to the bottom of the Alpine line but was way better than the middle of the road from another brand. It doesn't get any better than Alpine. The sound was awesome and the functions are a lot easier to use as well. That's exactly what I was after. Crutchfield, don't change a thing!!!! I have to give a thanks to teh Technical Support as well, they were awesome as well. Thanks Crutchfield for an awesome first purchase.

Pros: Sound Quality, Build Quality, easy to use buttons and the Loud Button is cool and it actually does change the sound quality when you switch it.

Cons: Only thing I miss is the Alpine Green buttons. Mine is Blue/Red..... If this is actually a con.......

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I've always wanted an Alpine receiver, I ordered this one and it was shipped super fast through UPS. I installed it myself and the toughest part was taking the dash apart in my 2003 Dodge Dakota. Once I had the wiring done and everything was back in place I turned the receiver and it was awesome, the sound was great even with stock speakers. I just couldn't believe the difference in sound with another stereo. Now I'm researching speakers for the doors, I'm sure it'll be even better once I've changed them out. :))

Pros: Easy install, easy wiring diagram.

Cons: Once the i-pod is connected you have to control it through the stereo and not the device.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This is a perfect unit to replace a basic stock head unit. This is replacing a broken stock head unit in my wife's minivan using the wiring harness purchased from Crutchfield. There are not any external amplifiers or other devices besides speakers in the system. The iPod control works perfectly and seamlessly and keeps my wife's iPhone 4s charged. Using the Motion X GPS drive app to navigate with her phone playing music I noticed that the music fades out, then voice guidance was given, finally your music fades back in. The volume of the voice navigation was also the same level of the music. I did not have to adjust the volume between music and nav. That was awesome. It was very smooth. My wife told me she would always have to turn her old radio off when using her navigation. The iPod controls are basic with options such as mix (shuffle) albums or mix all songs. Searching for a specific song could be a little cumbersome while driving. The CD player has not and probably won't be used. I imagine it works just fine. The tuner is a basic tuner setup and works like any other. It does not have all the advanced features and multi-input/output interfaces to line out with amps and so forth. That is fine for what this head unit is being asked to do. Great job to Alpine for offering a value head unit with iPod control.

Pros: iPod Control Perfect voice guidance and music interface with Motion X Gps drive navigation (haven't used any other navigation apps with this unit) Supplied iPod cord is long enough to reach from center console of a Chrysler minivan to drivers left side windshield mount to keep charging iPhone 4s during navigation and music. Simple operation Alpine blue just looks cool

Cons: Big one for me is the clock. It only displays the clock in certain modes. It should scroll song titles then go back to the clock. The only other cons are feature dependent. Either this unit has the feature you want or it doesn't. Everything functions as advertised.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The sounds is great, but be ware when you connect an iPod to it you will lose the controls on the iPod, iPhone, or iPad and be forced to use the convoluted controls on the Alpine. IF you have an iPod Touch or iPhone you can jail break it and install noaccsplash on the phone or ipod (again ipod touch only) and get rid of this annoying feature. I just don't understand why in the world Alpine would take your controls away, it seams much easier for the passenger to sit back with the iPod connected and flip through the songs rather than being hunched in over the dash forced to use smaller buttons just to put the Alpine logo on the screen of your iPod. Totally disappointed, will probably sell this off and buy something else or I guess I could always use the Aux port and just not use the iPod cable.

Pros: Excellent Sound Crutchfield support for the install

Cons: Didn't need antenna piece (it didn't even fit) iPod controls are completely disappointing Instructions for the install kit were horrible

The controls are pretty simple, so navigating through the ipod isn't as easy as the more expensive models with better displays. But she just wants to hear music, nothing special, so the deck was great for her needs. Installed the deck and pair of 6 1/2 speakers for $175, not bad at all. Controls are quickly intuitive and straight forward. I like how pushing the big round button will turn it on. Tuner sensitivity is excellent and the sound is marvelous. Pros: This product looks great

    Cons: Low wattage, lacks bass

    Cheap, but basic.

    Mike from CA on 12/30/2011

All in all, the low RMS wattage and lack of sensible iPod functionality is a bit of a deal breaker for me. I'll probably end up returning the head unit. However, for a replacement from a stock head unit, this unit is an amazing upgrade.

Pros: Definitely a nice headunit; I'm a fan of Alpine products, they're always well made, reliable, and good quality. This headunit is sleek and very functional; has a front AUX and USB port, sports full EQ options and subwoofer adjustability, as well as a detachable faceplate and CD player. The USB port can be used for iPods/iPhones, or a regular USB flash drive.

Cons: Controls aren't very intuitive, and can be difficult to see/navigate with in the dark. My main gripe is the iPod navigation; the head unit forces you to browse your iPod via its own interface instead of letting you browse on the iPod directly. This is a major nuisance as you have to scroll through thousands of songs by hand, and it doesn't save your location when you search.

    Alpine CDE-121

What else is there to say? If you just want a killer deck that plays radio, CD/MP3/WMA/AAC, and iPod control, I think you'd be hard pressed to find a better deck for the money. And if you try out the rest, I think you'll find that controlling the iPod is easier on the Alpine than any other brand. What are you waiting for?

Pros: iPod connectivity is just... awesome. The sound is phenomenal, SO easy to use... lots of features, but not so complicated you have to be a programmer to set it up properly. It looks freakin' cool too... with the red glow at night, and the blue LCD, really nice. Just an awesome deck.

Cons: I haven't really found anything yet that I don't love about it. It doesn't have satellite, and HD, and blah blah blah, but I didn't want those things or I'd have bought a deck for that. I wanted iPod connectivity, and this deck handles that beautifully. I guess it would have been nice if the remote came with it instead of separately... kinda nice to have a remote attached to the steering wheel, but that's just nitpicking. Really not a necessity.

This is a great radio. The sound is clear and I like the USB and the stereo mini plug, both on the front of the unit. I have bought several Alpine car radios and they all perform great. The best thing about this radio though is buying it from Crutchfield. They sent all the stuff I needed to install it in my car, (BMW 1998 528i) Bmw has a weird setup and the Crutchfield instructions were great. I did run into a problem trying to figure out the wiring harness and a quick (5 minutes or less) call to tech support answered all my questions and the operator even told me a couple of things I would need to do that I hadn't asked about. The radio worked perfectly as soon as I turned the key on. Nice job guys!

    Robust Head Unit

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I got this head unit for two reasons. First I badly needed an amp and the powerpack seemed like a perfect fit for what I was looking for. The other reason came about because my previous head unit had a CD drive that couldn't play past the first track. The ability to play my I-Pod through a USB connection directly into the head unit also made it a solid buy. Granted I don't know how this unit performs without the Powerpack but so far with it the performance has been nothing short of amazing. At first I had some problems with the EQ and was a little surprised that there was no option to adjust the mids but the defeat option which turns off the EQ gave me the perfect full range sound I was looking for so that made the EQ settings a moot point. There is a small learning curve but it's pretty easy to navigate your ipod through the head unit so long as you have your playlist in order. I really wish though that I didn't have to manually turn on the shuffle option everytime I selected a new playlist. All in all the compatibility with the power pack alone made this head unit worth the price tag. The extra features though like I-Pod USB compatibility have also made me happy with my purchase.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I replaced the factory unit in my 2010 Toyota Tacoma with the CDE121. I'd say that it's exactly what I wanted and really has about as many bells and whistles as I can use. The only thing that seems to be a bit sub par is the eq control. It has this weird system where you set the middle frequency for your preferred treble and bass and then tell it how much band width you want to have boosted around that central frequency. I've got a lot of tinkering to do to get it where I want it but it seems to me that they could have done something differently with this particular feature. That said, it sounds great even with my factory speakers and I can actually hear my iPod now. I'm happy with the choice.

I didnt expect much, just read online that it controlled a thumb drive, I plugged in my HTC EVO (Sprint 4G) and it took control of my phones 8gb of music. I read the users book and have found it easy to navigate to any album or artist that I want with the search feature, even displays titles of songs, albums, artists. VERY NICE UNIT. Beats anything in this price range hands down! I paired this with the Alpine Power Pack and it makes my Alpine Speakers Scream. Use the Para EQ and tune the bass where things arent distorted. Very nice and hurts my ears it gets so loud and stays clear, will eventually start to break up around 20 but a little more EQ and I think I can make it sing. Crutchfield provided everything I needed to install. I soldered the connections and everything was plug and play. THANK YOU CRUTCHFIELD

I have had this for about two weeks so far,and i Love it! It is a very easy to use system. The layout allows for quick song changes in traffic, so i can keep my eyes on the road. The sound quality is pretty good, at least i think so (this is my first aftermarket radio). I would reccomend this to anyone who wants a nice and affordable system. Cant wait to get some new speakers to go with this! (P.S. if you are just looking at crutchfield for the reviews and not planning on buying from them, i think you should reconsider. The install stuff was all free, and it cost $50 at Best Buy. Plus you get the master sheets for free which allowed for a fifteen minute install from box to car.) Thank You Crutchfield!!!

I love Alpine products but I absolutely hate the iPod interface thru the stereo. I just want to hook up to the USB connection and use my iPod itself to select which songs I want to play. I wish there was a mode to keep the head unit from taking over the iPod. Otherwise, this is a great product and I'm very happy with it.

Installed in 2002 Subaru Legacy L which had a very basic and weak Cassette - only head unit. Would have been hard to not improve on the stock unit. Even with the stock speakers it sounds good. Will likely swap out the stock speakers as well (but not something that has to happen now). Very happy with this stereo, easy to install, looks good in older car and the menu and settings are easy to navigate.

I "upgraded" to this head unit from Alpine's 9873, which I loved, in order to get iPod and aux connectivity. This one is a disappointment. I have two major problems with it: 1. The sound is awful. My previous Alpine sounded beautiful and full. The 121 sounds like it has less power, distorts sooner, buries certain sounds (like vocals) in the back of the mix, and has an awful headache-inducing bright spot around 1KHz. Searing highs, very weak midrange, muddy bass. This issue can't be tuned out with the built-in EQ settings. 2. The iPod integration is terrible. It's very time consuming and dangerous while driving to scroll through hundreds of artists. For some idiotic reason, they made it blink the name of the artist/track/song while you scroll, so it's hard to see where you're at. Why not scroll through an alphabet first to cut the list of artists down to 1/26th of the length? Come on. Also, when you turn the car off and back on, it forgets what artist and album you were playing from, so it starts over from A if you want to change the song. I spend more time turning the knob on this thing than listening to it because of unthoughtful design. Regretful.

I am blown away by the sonic quality of this model. Not too long ago, a head unit in this price range would have been junk. Today, not so. I purchased the CDE-121 to replace a stock radio in our 2002 Accord so we could survive a 2000 mile trip south. At one time, the Accord had a nice audio system, but I moved the head unit to a different vehicle and put the stock radio back in. I forgot that I had left a darned nice pair of Boston Acoustics front speakers with separate tweeters in the Accord. What a pleasant surprise! WOW! Even with deck power, this system rocks. I could do without the Alpine iPod control. (I have yet to see an external control interface in ANY in-dash unit that is easier to use than the iPod's own interface). That said, it does work, and I do appreciate having the ability to charge off the USB port. All in all, this is a sweet deal that far exceeded my expectations. Installation was very easy, thanks to the dash kit and great instructions from Crutchfield.

I want to start by saying that I have no previous experience with car audio! The installation went by fairly quickly and the free installation kit / wiring harness (provided by Crutchfield) was a huge time saver. I did have to call Crutchfield with a question but the Tech Support was a huge help! The headunit itself is very aesthetically pleasing and the sound through our Volvo's stock speakers improved drastically. The iPod/iPhone compatibility is very neat although it does take some time to get used to. The headunit even comes with a FREE iPod cable as well! The display is good during the day, and the display is even better at night. Overall, this product was an awesome upgrade from an old broken stock radio. Along with Crutchfield's AWESOME service, this product is well worth the money spent.

This was a pretty big upgrade from my old Alpine CDE-7821. The 7821 still works fine but who still listens to CD anymore? I needed a basic receiver that could control an iPod and have an AUX. Most of Alpines lineup has either or. Or you have to spend extra for Alpines proprietary iPod or AUX cable. The only downside is the screen size. Since it's small, you don't get much data from it. If you use playlists, it's easy enough to find them. I'm glad Alpine still uses a clean design that goes well with most vehicles. Most other brands use glossy plastic and wavy shapes which just looks bad in older cars. Overall the CDE-121 is great value if you can overcome the screen size.

This is the second receiver I've installed. Installation was easy! The sound is great with no amp. I love the AUX and USB inputs. Overall I am fairly happy with it. The only problem is the horrible iPod controls. Had I known (the product info wasn't 100% clear) I probably would have spent a little more for the CDA-105. When you plug the iPod in with the USB cable the Alpine logo appears on the iPod screen and you have to use the much more limited LCD display on the receiver in order to find or change songs. I just use the 1/8in AUX input to solve this, but it's a bit of a pain that I can't control the iPod and charge it at the same time (primary reason I bought this unit). If the description of a receiver talks about how great it is to use the receiver controls to find songs... look for something else! Lesson learned. Other than this, I have no complains about the unit.

Not a bad unit for the price, but like one of the reviewers, I had a bit of a problem with the fitting onto an Xterra 2006. The unit did not sit flush with the provided fit kit and because of that, it's difficult to eject the faceplate without having to grab the volume control knob-which comes off very easily. In regards to sound it's much better than the factory deck I had. Being able to use my ipod and having an aux input is another great feature. If you want a basic deck with good sound that Alpine is famous for, than this deck is perfect. I will be changing this deck for one that has more RCA out for separate amps and better control for tailoring sound.

    • Random: Random Play (all tracks/files on disc are played in random order), Folder Random (only files in current folder are played back in random order).

Off Insert/Eject: A CD disc can be inserted or ejected with the power off. When a disc is inserted with the power off, the unit will automatically power up and begin playback.

Auto Reload: When a CD is ejected and left sticking out of the CD slot for 20 seconds, the unit automatically reloads the CD to protect if from damage.

Angle Mounting: For proper CD playback, Alpine recommends mounting the CDE-121 no more that 35° above horizontal.

    Audio Section

CEA-2006 Compliant: The specifications given by Alpine for the built-in amplifier comply with the CEA-2006 mobile amplifier power testing and measurement standards from the CEA (Consumer Electronics Association). All manufacturers who comply with the standard can display the CEA-2006 logo on their product.

    • CEA-2006 Power Rating: 18 watts x 4 channels (at 4 ohms, 20-20kHz, 1% THD)
    • Max Power Output: 50 watts x 4 channels

Bass & Treble: Bass & Treble settings provide control over your car audio system, so you can tailor the sound to your personal tastes.

    • Bass Control:
      • Bass Center Frequency: 60Hz, 80Hz (default), 100Hz, or 200Hz
      • Bass Band Width: 1 (narrow) - 4 (wide)
      • Bass Level: -7 to +7 (+/-14dB in 2dB steps)
    • Treble Control:
      • Treble Center Frequency: 10kHz (default), 12.5kHz, 15kHz, or 17.5kHz
      • Treble Level: -7 to +7 (+/-14dB in 2dB steps)

Loudness: Loudness introduces a special low and high frequency emphasis at low listening levels to compensate for the ear's decreased sensitivity to bass and treble sound at low volume. There are three loudness settings (1, 2, & Off).

Subwoofer Preamp Output: The unit is equipped with a non-fading subwoofer preamp output with subwoofer level control. You can select from two types of subwoofer level control.

    • Subwoofer System 1: Subwoofer level changes according to the main volume setting.
    • Subwoofer System 2: Subwoofer level change is different from the main volume setting; even at low volume settings, the subwoofer is still audible.

Note: The unit's subwoofer preamp output is full-range and does not have a low-pass filter. You will need to use your connected amplifier's low-pass filter.

Audio Mute: Activating the Audio Mute function will instantly lower the volume level by 20 dB.

Interrupt Feature: Although the supplied wiring harness contains the pink/black Interrupt lead, it is not used in this unit. This radio does not have the audio interrupt feature.

    Radio Functions

AM/FM Tuner: The Alpine CDE-121 features a built-in AM/FM tuner with manual, seek, and preset tuning.

Preset Tuning: The built-in tuner provides 12 FM and 6 AM preset stations. Stations can be preset manually or automatically.

Local/Distance Tuning: Local seek tuning lets you tune in only those radio stations with sufficiently strong signals for good reception. Distance seek tuning allows both strong and weak stations to be tuned.

    Display Features

Detachable Face: The unit features a single front loading CD face that detaches from the chassis to deter theft. The CD player comes supplied with a hard plastic face case to protect the detachable face when you have it off the chassis. A face-fixing screw is supplied for making the face non-detachable, if desired.

Note: An optional soft face case (142DFC1X, sold separately) can also be purchased for this unit.

1-Line LCD Display: This unit is equipped with a 1-Line white-backlit LCD, so you can easily view AM/FM stations, CD-Text, and ID-3/WMA tag information.

Text Display: Text information, such as the disc name and the track name, will be displayed if playing a CD text compatible disc. It is also possible to display the folder name, the file name, and the tag information, while playing a MP3/WMA/AAC disc.

Text Scroll: This unit can scroll the disc and track names recorded on CD-Text disc, as well as the text information of MP3/WMA/AAC files, folder names, and tags. There are two Text Scroll settings.

    • Auto: The CD text information, the information of folder and file names, and the tags are scrolled automatically.
    • Manual: The display is scrolled when a disc is loaded or when a track is changed.

Dimmer: Although the supplied wiring harness includes the orange illumination wire, it is not used. There is no display dimming feature on this unit.

    Remote Control (optional)

Optional Wireless Remote: The Alpine CDE-121 is wireless remote control ready. Simply add on the Alpine RUE-4202 IR remote (500RUE4202, sold separately) to make it even easier to control the head unit's functions.
