Alpine CDE-122

Overview

Our take on the Alpine CDE-122

PANDORA® Internet radio is a great way to enjoy music, and now you can play it in your car with Alpine's CDE-122 CD receiver. Once your iPhone's connected to the Alpine's USB input, you can select PANDORA® as a source and use the receiver's controls to navigate your stations. Dedicated "thumbs up" and "thumbs down" buttons let you rate songs on the fly so that PANDORA® knows what music to play for you. You can even create a PANDORA® station right on the CDE-122 when a song or artist you like is playing.

Play your other music, too
Got a lot of songs on your iPod? Find the one you want quickly with Alpine's Percentage Search — it lets you jump through your library using the radio preset buttons.

Of course, you can play all your CDs, plus discs you've loaded with MP3 files. You can also load your files on a USB thumb drive, then pop it in the front USB input. The front auxiliary input comes in handy for connecting a Dock & Play satellite radio or another portable player.

Boost the power, build a system
A set of preamp outputs provides a convenient connection for an amp or a powered sub, and you can use the subwoofer level control to dial in the right amount of bass. Then get your sound right using the 3-band parametric EQ, or choose from one of the six preset options. One more cool feature — this receiver works with Alpine's Power Pack, a compact box that hooks up easily to your receiver, boosting its power from 18 watts up to a serious 45 watts RMS per channel.

Note: If you're going to use your iPod with this receiver, be sure to check "Details" for specific iPod model compatibility with this receiver or its optional iPod adapter.

Note: Sorry, Crutchfield cannot ship Alpine products to Guam or Puerto Rico.

thank you again i did this myself with your help on the phone and we got it done . very fast and your team was very good with giving information when i needed it .

After the factory head unit quit on my 2004 Honda Accord, I was frustrated by what appeared to be an impossible task. Honda recommended that I either replace the entire unit for $700+ or replace the amplifier section for $240, not including install charges. When I turned to Crutchfield I was delighted to find a simple yet elegant solution, replacing the storage bin with an after market head installation unit. I chose the Alpine, not just because it fit the space, but because I had owned a similar unit 10 years ago. For less than $150 I have a much better sounding audio system in the Honda, which I was able to install on by myself. Alpine rocks! Yes!!

Pros: Amazing features like USB, Aux connections, and Pandora functions. Really excellent value for the money. Clean and clear sound

Cons: Now I need to replace the factory speakers with a decent set to get the full impact of the Alpine head unit. (not really a negative)

Sounds great and was easy to install.

Pros: Love it so far. 4th Alpine head unit that I have owned. Top notch equipment and best value in my opinion. I really like the USB input, I may never play another CD in my car again. Haven't used Pandora on unit yet, but feel this will be a pro also.

Cons: no hard copy of the owners manual. I always like to keep this in the glove box for reference. Came with a CD, but you have to print it off. Would rather have had a rear AUX hook-up to hardwire in my portable Sirius XM radio.

Tends not to have as good a signal sensitivity as the OEM unit for FM (which, if you do your research, you'll find it true for almost all aftermarket HUs). Panel lights don't dim as much as I would have expected when the interior instrument illumination is activated. Sound and features are great. Ipod navigation via the USB from the HU a bit challenging, cannot safely adjust it when you are driving if using the USB control function. Does fine w/ using the AUX input but then the Ipod won't charge, but overall an acceptable replacement for the defunct OEM unit. Great power; sub outs; easy to adjust tone, balance, fade, et al. Very happy w/ the purchase. I don't buy things for "coolness factor"- I put 5 stars there just to not hurt the review- It is a good HU, "cool" is unimportant compared to ease of use, buttons, control placement, etc.

Pros: The right controls in the right places, clear sound, adaptable to Aux or USB inputs, has sub/pre-amp output if you wish, easy to install. Doesn't scream "steal me" and I'm not interested in pulling the faceplate all the time. (installed in a convertible and I leave the top down all the time) Alpine is definitely the way to go.

    Cons: FM signal sensitivity.

Cons: Confusing instructions, FM tuner isn't the best of seen as far as sensitivity

Fantastic head unit. This is the second one of these I've had, I sold my car that I had put the first one into, and the first thing I ordered for the new car was another one of these. Great low price and one of the only recievers that will let me plug my iphone in through USB and still control my music with the phone, I hate browsing through my 8000 songs using a stereo. Sounds even better paired with the Alpine Power Pack

Pros: -Low Price -Alpine quality -use Iphone media player controls

Well built with great sound. A solid upgrade from factory. It gets pretty loud and sounds great with a couple pair of mid-line speakers. Seriously do we need a removeable faceplate on a radio at this price? Knock $20 off and sell the unit without it.

    Pros: great sound

Cons: lights don't dim so it produces glare at the driver.

I bought this radio as a replacement to my Sony Xplod radio after it died after a year and a half. The sound is better than the Sony and it has the same features as far as using CDs, radio, auxiliary, and iPod. Hopefully the faceplate on this one won't fry like the Sony did after a year

Pros: Great sound, easy instal. I can still use my iPod and the user interface is great.

Cons: No search feature when using iPod/USB attachment.

I received this unit the next day after purchasing, thanks Crutchfield for the super fast shipping!!!!!! The unit itself if well constructed, typical for Alpine except for the fact that the main knob comes off fairly easily but slips back on. This seemed a little odd to me but oh well. I love all of the features, took a couple of days to get used to how the pandora playlists work, but now I love it!! Great value!!

It keeps powering off and on randomly a couple of times a day. This didn't start until after the 60 day Crutchfield return/replacement policy so now I have to either live with it or send it back for repair which means I have no sound in the car during that time :( I guess I got the booger of the lot. Other than that the sound is good.

Alpine was a leader in the industry when I was a kid and I remember pining over some of those original Alpine decks with city names. I remember thinking that Seattle was the only one that I could even close to afford. Now my son has his first car (1999 Outback) and I surprised him with this Alpine CDE-122. We paid $130 with an installation kit and a rebate...Seamless install and clean final installation. What a great set of features and great sound for the money. You can't beat this unit. It is also very handsome, it doesn't look like it was trying too hard to out design its competitors. Restrained is the word for it. This unit has me considering upgrading my stereo soon. Thanks Crutchfield!

Pros: Price, sound quality, ipod features....and others

Cons: Doesn't have any expandability or add on modules that I can see.

This stereo with a couple of minor changes would be ideal but unfortunately it isn't. The sound quality is excellent. I installed it into a 1998 Honda CR-V with factory speakers and it improved sound tremendously. It is much louder and clearer. The problem with this stereo is it uses a USB front connection to connect your ipod. It is a real pain to have to disconnect the cable each time you want to remove the faceplate, unless of course you don't mind having the cable hanging off it which you already have to disconnect it from your ipod as well. It also leaves your ipod wire hanging in the way of your cup holders and climate control on your dash. It should have a rear permanent ipod cable connection so you can route your ipod cable out of the way to your glove box or in the change tray. Another annoying feature is the mix button. If you just want to mix songs but are in an artist it only mixes songs from that artist where I've had other stereos that allow you to mix all songs in your list with one push of the button.

Pros: Great sound, plenty of power, pandora option, nice built in digital analog converter (DAC), nice look.

Cons: No rear ipod connection which leaves you having to remove the ipod cable every time you want to remove your face plate. Song mix control could be better.

I wish that I bought this sooner. My old iPod player was archaic by comparison. This was inexpensive and does more than most of my friend's stereos for half the money.

Pros: The USB port stops the iPod when the car shuts off. Very easy to use.

Cons: Because of where the time displays (next to the USB port) when something's plugged in there, the glare makes it hard to see the time. You may not experience this problem if you don't have a sunroof.

Ordered Monday, delivered Tuesday, impressive. Great tech support. I was concerned about FM reception in fringe area but number of stations and reception quality are both outstanding. I'm receiving AM stations I didn't know existed. Final installation looks great. Lessons learned: Look at the orientation of the connectors in the car before connecting the adaptor cable. After I completed the crimps I had to rotate the connectors 180 degrees to mate. No big deal but I would have preferred a straight in approach. Also, sleeve is essentially a friction fit into car opening. Bendable tabs help but I would prefer a more solid attachment.

Pros: Great AM and FM reception; easy to use controls; looks great in car; simple to install.

Cons: Sleeve is friction fit only with bendable tabs.

Bought this unit and installed myself in my 2004 Subaru Forester. I'm not the most handy guy but installation was pretty simple, just buy this receiver and a $5 connectors kit and Crutchfield included the rest (even the dash pocket since my factory unit was double-DIN). Give yourself a couple of hours to install and you'll be set. I had to call customer service on one small thing and had a guy on the phone giving me advice in less than a minute. The sound is GREAT even with factory speakers, it's a very noticeable upgrade from the factory receiver. The USB connection is why I bought it though and it works as advertised. You just plug in your iPhone when you get in the car and then control everything from the receiver. Easy to bring up the songs stored on your iPhone or pull up your Pandora stations. Not to mention this unit just looks really good. No flashing lights, changing colors or stuff like that - just simple silver and blue. It looks so good installed, at first glance you probably wouldn't notice it didn't actually come with my car. This is my first experience with Alpine and Crutchfield. Probably won't be my last. Very happy with both of them.

Pros: Great Sound, Pandora functionality, iPhone functionality, Detachable faceplate with cover included

Cons: Scrolling through artists from my iPhone is kind of slow

This is my 5th Alpine radio, and definitely the nicest one to date. I was surprised at how nice it was, considering its half the price of any other one I've purchased. If you don't care about satellite or bluetooth, you'll find this radio to be perfect. It has an awesome interface for Pandora, and worked perfectly with my iPhone 4S. The sound is clear, and full. It has plenty of of power from the built in amplifier. As for the FM reception, it was perfect. Thank you, Alpine, for reminding me why I've stuck with your brand for the last 20 years.

I bought this system after visiting another electronics retailer and they were out of stock on the wiring harness. Thank Goodness they were, not only was the stereo and accessories ( stereo, trim kit, antenna adapter, wiring harness) almost $200 cheaper than the competitor but the service absolutely BLOWS them away! It took me about 1 1/2 to install that included 2 calls to the techs to ease my concerns. These guys are courteous, knowledgeable, and efficient. The stereo itself is incredible, the sound is amazing and listening to my iPod through it is glorious! I can't wait to order the Alpine speakers to match the unit.

Pros: Value, sound quality, customer service

Cons: Nothing, but be aware that the Pandora feature only works with an iPhone.

Once again Alpine is on first place.

I ordered this because my Kenwood Excelon would only play music on flash drives. The iPod USB function of this unit is nice, it comes with an extra cable as well so you can leave 1 in the car, 1 in the house. The sound quality of my Kenwood was disappointing after I decided to remove my subwoofers and I was contemplating getting a sub to replace them for the lack of bass/mid range. There was no "punch" at all from my speakers, all of which had been upgraded. After installing the Alpine, the speakers came to life and my setup sounds amazing. I have the clarity that I wanted all along with much more versatility.

Pros: iPod USB connection, auxiliary port, Pandora thumbs up/down buttons on faceplate, easy to use, iPod search function, great sound quality. Simply has lots of features for a lower price than most.

Alpine and Crutchfield are a fantastic combination!! The deck is great. The built in iPod controls, including Pandora, work great. The sound is amazing. I already had Alpine type R speakers in my truck and this deck increased their sound quality ten fold. And as usual Crutchfield provided great service and support. The installation tools were spot on and fit my truck perfectly!! I'll never shop for a car stereo anywhere but Crutchfield!

I am glad that I bought it through crutchfield. I know I wouldn't have gotten it any cheaper or a better price also with free mounting accessories that comes with it. Thanks again.

Pros: I sure like the alpine stereo which I told my daughter to get and she loves it.

Cons: I don't like the roominess of installation to put in a Volkswagen beetle. Which I know it can improve of installing it in easier.

I have purchased Alpine all my life. I recent purchased the Alpine CDE-122 to replace a factory unit. My factory unit had poor sound quality to say the least. I love my new unit, the power, crisp sound quailty, and the ability to use pandora, mp3 awsome. Dont waste you money saving a few bucks with sub par car stereos (Alpine is the best of the best and has been for years) Alpine is the only way to go!!!!!!!!!!

Pros: Sound quality, Power, MP3, USB, has everything you need to run a nice middle level sound system.

Cons: I wish this unit had 4volt sub preouts, but is avalible on upgraded units.

The radio was a replacement for the stock F150 radio that no longer played CDs. The sound quality is much improved, although I have not yet tried my Ipod. I don't use the Pandora function, but the radio and CD quality is great. The only issue I had during installation was finding a good chassis ground, the radio will not work without a good ground. It is mounted in a regular cab F-150, so there is not a very large space to fill with sound, and it does sound great! The price was very reasonable for a Alpine radio and I added my own Pioneer speakers and built my own speaker box to place behind the seat. I do not have an external amp, but I don't really need to blow out my windows, so I am happy with just the head unit.

Pros: Reasonable price for an Alpine, great unit for a tight budget.

Cons: Finding a good ground for the radio, the metal plate behind the stock radio is NOT a ground. I wasted a lot of time troubleshooting that problem. So, to save you some frustration, make sure you find a good ground.

An absolutely average unit in nearly all regards. Only purchased it because it was promoted as being "Pandora" friendly - not so much in reality. Overly complex and small controls for what it actually is. Teenagers will love it.

Pros: In theory, interfaces with i-phone and Pandora. In theory.

Cons: Fiddly bits and bobs. Price.

I put this deck in my daughter's Wrangler. The build quality is excellent and the unit itself worked flawlessly. I installed with the Alpine KTP445 power pack, and for a noisy vehicle like the wrangler, I would highly reccomend adding this small amp. It fits right behind the deck so it is not visible and adds an incredible amount of "Punch" to the sound! The placement of the tone button right above the input select button takes a bit of getting used to. If you accidentaly hit one vs. the other it can be a bit frustrating. Overall, I would highly reccommend!

Decided on this receiver because the Alpine name and have not been disappointed. Its beauty is in its simplicity of operation. It has a very simple interface with my iPhone and Pandora that makes operation while driving simple. It is not the best interface I have seen if you want to play a particular song or artist; however, allowing me to focus more on the road and the great tunes is more than a fair tradeoff. Thanks to the install guide from Crutchfield installation was NO problem - took about 2.5 hours from start to finish (this is my 2nd receiver installation) and I am not a pro!

Pros: ease of use Integration with iPhone

Cons: Took a while to dial in the equalizer settings - was a bit bright and brash out of the box iPhone interface a bit clumsy for finding specific songs or artists
