Our take on the Alpine CDE-133BT

by Zak Billmeier
Alpine

Why replace your factory radio?

Two good reasons - sound quality and cool features. A new car stereo offers power that's superior to most factory radios, along with more sophisticated tone controls. And most car stereos offer built-in or optional features that add safety and fun to life in your car, including inputs for your iPod or MP3 player, Bluetooth connectivity for hands-free cell phone calls, satellite radio or HD Radio reception, and connections for building an audio system in your car.

Talk hands-free, plus stream music with Bluetooth®
Other devices may come and go, but one thing's for sure — you never leave home without your phone. The Alpine CDE-133BT CD receiver lets you talk hands-free, plus stream music from a compatible phone, all without messy wires.

Advanced Bluetooth features
Have you ever tried to talk to someone, but been unable to understand them because their in-car Bluetooth just didn't cut it? Your callers will hear you loud and clear with the CDE-133BT fielding your calls. First, you can mount the included microphone somewhere in front of you so it'll have no problem picking up your voice. Next, the receiver lets you adjust the mic's gain to best match your speaking voice. You can also tweak the phone output and ring volume, so you won't go diving for the volume knob every time someone calls.

When a call comes in, you'll see your caller's phone number on the screen. You can answer the call by tapping the CDE-133BT's phone button, or set up the receiver to answer all calls automatically. If someone else calls in, just tap the "2" key to activate call waiting.

Stream your tunes, too
If your phone or another device supports Bluetooth music streaming, you can beam your tunes and control playback with the CDE-133BT. Alpine's Sound Expansion technology helps your streaming tunes sound their best.

Great for your iPod® and iPhone®
You can use the CDE-133BT's controls to navigate your iPod's music library, thanks to a convenient front-panel USB input. The person riding shotgun will love Passenger Control Mode, which lets them play DJ while you focus on driving. And let's not forget about what made Alpine famous in the first place — great sound quality. You can adjust your sound to taste with one of the ten equalizer presets or by using the 3-band parametric EQ.

Want to keep your steering wheel controls?
In most vehicles, you can use an adapter (not included) to connect your vehicle's steering wheel controls to this Alpine stereo. Connect a few wires, then program the adapter for your particular car and the Alpine, and you'll retain the convenience of your steering wheel controls. Check the "Accessories" tab for compatible adapters.

Bluetooth note: Use of this receiver's Bluetooth features will depend upon your phone's Bluetooth capabilities. Learn more in our article explaining Bluetooth profiles.

iPod note: If you're going to use your iPod with this receiver, be sure to check "Details" for specific iPod model compatibility with this receiver or its optional iPod adapter.

    Built-in Bluetooth

Bluetooth Plus (powered by Parrot): The Alpine CDE-133BT features built-in Bluetooth technology powered by Parrot. The CDE-133BT supports Bluetooth (version 3.0) hands-free communication & audio streaming for the iPhone & other Bluetooth-enabled mobile phones/devices. Hands-free communication is possible from the Alpine head unit when using a HSP (Head Set Profile) & HFP (Hands-Free Profile) compatible Bluetooth enabled mobile phone. Wireless audio streaming is possible from the CDE-133BT when using a A2DP (Advanced Audio Distribution Profile) & AVRCP (Audio/Video Remote Control Profile) compatible Bluetooth enabled mobile device.

Pairing: The Alpine CDE-133BT can be paired to up to five Bluetooth enabled mobile devices (only one device can be used at a time). Not all Bluetooth mobile phones will be compatible. Parrot software updates provide support for future phones.

External Microphone with Noise Cancellation: The included external microphone (with visor-clip) allows you to speak to the other party on the telephone call hands-free, while the other party's voice is played through your car stereo speakers. The CDE-133BT features a noise cancellation function to ensure that your calls are heard clearly. You can adjust the microphone's volume level from 0 to 7. You can also mute the microphone, so your voice will not be heard by the caller. The external microphone measures 0.5625" (diameter) x 1.625" (deep).

Placing Calls: The Alpine CDE-133BT provides a variety of functions for placing a phone call without using your mobile phone. The Alpine CDE-133BT features full phone book access, call history, voice tag dialing, and redial with compatible phones.

    • Voice Dialing: If you have a voice-dial capable phone, you can dial a phone contact by simply speaking the name of your contact.
    • Phonebook (with ABC search): Up to 1,000 entries (5 telephone numbers for each name) can be downloaded from your compatible mobile phone. You can select the first 3 call letters (ABC) to search for a desired name in your phonebook.
    • Preset Dialing: You can assign phone numbers that you dial frequently to presets (1-6) for quick recall. You can assign up to six frequently called phone numbers. A total of 18 phone numbers can be stored in the preset memory (6 numbers for each mobile phone paired).
    • Call History: The 80 previously dialed, received, or missed numbers can be retrieved and dialed from memory.

Receiving Calls: The Alpine CDE-133BT provides a couple ways to answer your phone calls without picking up your mobile phone. Incoming calls are announced by a caller ring tone through your vehicle's speakers (music will be muted) & a Caller ID message across your Alpine head unit's display.

    • Manual Answer: Manually answer an incoming call by pressing the "Phone" button on your Alpine head unit.
    • Automatic Answer: Set the Alpine head unit to answer the incoming call automatically; when a call is received, it is answered automatically after approximately 5 seconds.
    • Call Waiting: If a second call is received during a current call, you can have the first caller wait momentarily while you take the second call. When you are finished with one call, you can switch to the other.

Call Switch: This function allows you to initiate the transfer of audio between your mobile phone and your car's speakers.

Text Message Alert: The CDE-133BT can give you a notification on the display with a blinking mail icon indicator for 30 seconds while receiving a text message. The mail icon indicator will remain on if there is an unread message on a connected mobile phone. You cannot send a text message using the head unit's controls.

Audio Streaming: The Alpine CDE-133BT can stream music from you Bluetooth A2DP/AVRCP mobile device. Not only can it control & stream your music through Bluetooth, it can process your music using its built-in DSP Sound Expansion to ensure you get the best sound. Basic playback functions include - Play, Pause, & Skip (Previous/Next).

Note: Bluetooth Firmware Update v01.27.00 is required for Bluetooth control and song information display from an Apple iOS 6.0+ device.

Bluetooth Sound Quality Adjustments: You can customize the sound of your Bluetooth hands-free experience to fit your own preferences. You can adjust the CDE-133BT's mic gain, phone output, & ring tone volume. If that's not enough, there are 5 sound quality settings to choose from to get the balance just right for you. This flexibility will make your phone calls a pleasurable experience.

    • Volume Adjustments: You can emphasize or weaken the volume level of phone call, the ring tone, and the microphone input to fit your own preference. The Phone Talk Level, Ring Tone, & Mic Gain are all adjustable between -5 to + 5 dB.

You can choose the type according to your own preference - Type 1 (standard mode), Type 2 (enhances noise reduction), Type 3 (enhances echo-cancellation), Type 4 (enhances both noise reduction & echo cancellation), & Type 5 (weakens both noise reduction & echo-cancellation).

Speaker Output: You can select which car speaker outputs the audio from your Bluetooth-enabled mobile phone/device.

    • All: The audio will be output from all of the speakers in the car

Not all that it is cracked up to be

Written By Roger Rabbit, Louisiana on Saturday, October 12, 2013
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The first week was wonderful. I bought this unit for the bluetooth technology. It worked great for the first week. i struggled for months thinking it was my phone not the unit. It would some times connect it would pause during playback for no reason. then I got an i Phone, It would not connect at all. I contacted Alpine and they told me to install the firmware update. That was a challenge in itself. The unit would not connect with my computer. When I finally got it to connect it took about twenty minutes to finally get the update to push. After the update it stuck in the firmware updated do not touch any button for 30 minutes. When it finally told me to touch any button when I tried to check the update the bluetooth would not work at all. Now I have to buy a new unit, This unit does not work well with the i phone at all.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Bought this unit to replace my factory radio in my 99 Wrangler. I wasn't looking to break the bank with my purchase. Just wanted a unit to integrate with my iPhone. Couldn't be happier with my purchase. This was my first purchase from Crutchfield, but it definitely won't be my last. Installation instructions made this a breeze. Looks good and great sound quality.
    Pros:
I like the look and sound of the unit. easy to use. USB, AUX, and bluetooth connectivity gives you every option you need to integrate your smartphone or music player. Overly impressed with Crutchfield instructions. Purchase came with all parts I needed for the install and easy to follow installation guide specifically tailored to my Jeep.

    Alpine CDE-133BT review

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This is a great sounding deck. I replaced the stock deck on an '05 Honda Accord. Even with the stock speakers it sounded great right off the bat and was a huge improvement over the stock deck. I have not used the Blue Tooth features yet because I just don't have a reason. I bought this deck to run an iPod in the car easily. The controls for the iPod are a little complicated and not easy while driving without looking away from the road. I typically have the iPod mounted on the dash and control the selections etc right from the iPod itself.
    Pros:
Ease of install and use, great sound, good controls of equalizer etc
    Cons:
    complicated buttons for iPod control.

    Great Stereo

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I have always wanted to use Cruchfield and have never had the opportunity, as I tend to prefer the "Factory look." I bought a jeep and wanted to upgrade stereos for sound quality and the hands free capibility, and I do not think I could have chosen a better stereo. Thanks!
    Pros:
Install was easy. Directions were great. Not too sure how it could have been simpler.
    Cons:
    I cannot think of any.

    Great unit

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I recently installed this unit in a 2003 honda pilot. The install was easy. The harness adapter from Crutchfield really made things easy. I was able to sort out all the wires and make the connections in the comfort of my kitchen. The install kit fits great and the instructions were superb

The unit works great - the bluetooth connects with my iphone 3 even if I don't have it unlocked. I like the controls - they are easy to use. I bought a Metra ASWC with the unit so my steering wheel controls work with the new head unit. My only regret is the backlight on the unit is blue. My pilot dash is a green back light. I ams so happy with everything else I let the blue color remind me of the ocean.
    Pros:
excellent bluetooth, easy controls, easy install, great value
    Cons:
Blue is the only back light color -

Alpine CDE-133BT into 2005 Mustang GT

Written By bsm1, Tucson, AZ on Thursday, February 28, 2013
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This product works well with iPod and iPhone. Seamless actually. Sounds better than the factory shaker 500 it replaced. There were a couple of installation caveats however. The 12v to 5v voltage changer so you don't get a loud POP when the amps turn on is not fully effective. I tried with and without the additional part. Much better with, but not gone. You still hear it. However, this could be because I only purchased one, and the mustang has two blue/white wires, the wiring harness I bought has one. I connected the two blue/white leads together into the voltage adapter, then the adapter to the one blue/white lead from the radio. Maybe I'm overpowering the adapter, and need to put each blue white lead from mustang through its own voltage adapter then combine the to leads after the adapter in a connection with the one from the radio. The other thing to note is that the the generic single din plus pocket, which fits the mustang perfectly, is not made for this radio. The collar attachment does not fit over the radio, its too small. The other attachments that go longitudinally do not fit with this radio either. So the radio at this point is not attached soundly to the car, but fit snugly enough its not an immediate problem. Probably just add a few shims and get it a bit tighter. All in all, nice radio, hands free operation of iPhone, including voice calling. iPod control from the deck. Easy Bluetooth connections. Does all of it with minimal setup.
    Pros:
Nice features, good price, easy set up. Hands-free works well. Nice sounding system, easy control of iPod library.
    Cons:
Not a ford factory original, so a few installation issues. Nothing that cannot be overcome.

Purchase this for my 1998 Deville concours Of course their system did not say that I will have to replace speakers Had to replace 6 factory speakers So I spent additional $ at the audio shop In addition to what deck cost me Sound quality was terrible So I had to put subwoofers and amplifiers in my car All told I spent additional $
    Cons:
Had to take out 6 factory speakers and put in 6 new speakers Sound quality was worse with this deck then with the factory system Had to add 12 inch subwoofer and amplifier to get sound quality right spent more $

    Nice unit But.....

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Installation in my 2008 Honda Element was a snap with the included free supplies. I ended up soldering and heat shrinking the adapter cables and cut down the length from the provided pigtails. Note that my unit did not have the ability to change the faceplate display colors as advertised by Alpine. Also, read the fine print as you can only use 1 bluetooth device at a time with this unit. I have an ipod touch and a blue tooth phone and I have to clear each device and register the opposite one which is a pain. So I'm back to the ipod usb cable when I want to connect the phone via bluetooth. Otherwise I'm pretty happy.
    Pros:
Cool radio with lots of functionality and good sound. Easy install with Crutchfiled's free goodies.
    Cons:
Display is fixed blue and only 1 bluetooth device can be used at a time. Pairing & unpairing might be an issue for some..

I had this unit professionally installed on my 2005 Jeep Liberty. the sound quality is amazing. The direct iphone hook-up is really cool not to mention the Bluetooth works very well, actually better than my earpiece as far as sound quality. Crutchfield, you knocked this one outta the park with this one, Great job!!

I love the sound this unit puts out. This is not my daily commuting vehicle so I usually only listen during weekends. The Bluetooth is excellent and I use the USB port on the front almost exclusively. My only dislike is that by replacing my stock unit, I lost the clock on the display. You can have the clock displayed but then you lose the ability to see the song title and or artist at the same time. The buttons are also small and almost hidden so I have to take my eyes off the road to adjust.
    Pros:
    Great sound. Easy to use.
    Cons:
Display will not show time as well as artist info at the same time Small buttons

    Luxury Level Class

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I installed this myself as a factory upgrade for my 1989 Grand Wagoneer. The square MODE button compliments the square styling of the interior. Easy to install - all the wire colors matched up with the wiring harness provided by Crutchfield. Easy to operate. User interface is intuitive. I have not needed to refer to the manual once - not even to set the clock. Factory EQ settings are all that are needed for my basic speakers. Lots of bang for the buck here. Best of all - it sounds great.
    Pros:
Intuitive interface. Front USB. Classic square buttons.
    Cons:
Blue lights are too modern for vintage vehicles. Plastic front.

If I could give the sound quality a 6 or 7 I would! The sound quality is AWESOME!!!
    Pros:
Awesome sound which makes up for the bluetooth issues which may be resolved, just don't know yet.
    Cons:
Bluetooth issues which I hope I will figure out, but there is always the aux input to use!! I had a JVC B4 that had bluetooth issues also, but the sound from the Alpine is just soooooo much better than the JVC, it almost doesn't matter to me!!!!!!!!!

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Installation took longer than expected. The generic connector that looked like the one in my car was a completely different beast. If you have to force it in, you have the same problem, plus the wires don't go to the same place. Had to start from scratch, but the colors lined up perfectly with my 2001 astro van. Large display is easy to read at a glance, the sound quality is better and louder than the aftermarket POS it replaced using stock speakers. Bluetooth hands free connection with my droid 2 phone is effortless. Positioned the mic between the steering column and dashboard, pointing right at my mouth. Calls are crystal clear. Use with my XM radio and aux in. Have not tried with ifruit or usb flash drive, but sure it will "rock, roll, rhythm and blues" (actual names of XM's 4 satellites, BTW)
    Pros:
    Everything
    Cons:
Dashboard lights dimmer does not control this unit, even though the wire is connected.

    Alpine CDE-133BT

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Overall a very good buy dollar wise, but I want to mention a few issues to those that may consider purchasing this unit. Display color cannot be changed, repeat, cannot be changed. You're stuck with bright blue and the other lights in my car are unfortunately green. You have to do some wire splicing and I did not expect this because I bought a unit and installation kit specifically for my car and expected to plug and play. Rather than just twisting wires together and taping them, I soldered them and used heat shrink tubing over the soldered connections. There are a few wires left over which makes one wonder what they do and if they should be used. Final issue is that the Alpine unit will not allow changing artists or songs from streaming blue tooth audio from iphone. A user will need to change artists or songs manually from the Iphone when streaming audio.
    Pros:
Sounds good and blue tooth phone works good. Crutchfield staff good.
    Cons:
Stuck with blue display color. You have to splice wires as the wiring kits are generic and not vehicle specific. Can't change artists or songs through Alpine unit when streaming audio from iphone in bluetooth mode. Must be done manually from Ipone.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Crutchfield recomended this product to me and it has been a success. I own an old explorer that I use quite a bit for various things, however it isn't my everyday driver. I got used to hands free calling and using my iphone for music in my other vehicles so I wanted the same features in the explorer. Surprisingly everything works as advertised. The hands free calling even works great. Everyone I talk to seems to be able to hear me just fine with no interference (had to adjust the mic gain). The iphone operation is pretty easy to use as well. The only flaw is the size of the buttons, but there isn't much you can do about that considering the size of they have to work with. I still haven't figured out how to connect my music through bluetooth but I really haven't had the need for it. I rather plug it into the usb and keep my phone charged anyway.
    Pros:
Hands free calling works well pretty simple to operate functions on iphone for music.
    Cons:
size of buttons Wish it came with a remote that had the functions of an ipod so you could operate the music without taking your eyes off the road.
