Alpine CDE-152

Overview

Our take on the Alpine CDE-152

Alpine's CDE-152 CD receiver offers classic looks and classic Alpine sound. And thanks to Alpine's Bass Engine SQ, you can dial in a variety of EQ, sub level, and crossover settings with the push of a button — a great way to get your groove on when you're heading down the road. When you've got time to do some fine-tuning, you'll appreciate the options offered by the 3-band parametric equalizer and its 11 preset tone curves. This receiver also works with Alpine's Power Pack, a 45W x 4 power amp that plugs right into your Alpine receiver's wire harness.

You can take charge of your iPod® or iPhone® when it's hooked up via USB, including searching for your music on the receiver's display. You can also plug a thumb drive into the handy front-panel USB input, and you'll find an auxiliary input for other sources, too. And, of course, you can slip in a store-bought or recordable CD in the front panel slot.

iPod/smartphone note: If you're going to use your iPod or smartphone with this receiver, be sure to check "Details" for compatibility information.

I replaced a Pioneer receiver that that was in my truck for thirteen years due to the face plate no longer working and near impossible to find used or otherwise, it was a good receiver and i liked it a lot. Since being replaced with the Alpine CDE-152 with the matching Alpine KPT-44 5A power pack I'm extremely satisfied with the results, I find the Alpine to be considerably better than the Pioneer in most all aspects, I'm not bashing the Pioneer unit at all, the Alpine just seems to be a lot better all the way around. I also like that you don't have to flip the face plate down every time you want to insert/remove a CD, I think that was a contributing factor to the demise of the Pioneer face plate. I will be replacing all of my speakers with Alpine's as well in the near future.

Pros: I like everything about the receiver

    Cons: None

Bought this radio to replace the factory original in my '95 F250. The installation supplies Crutchfield sent along (at no extra cost!) worked great. Controls are intuitive and easy to use. USB port a real plus for phone; don't really miss the BT that I have on a similar Alpine radio in my other car.

Pros: Easy install, free installation kit

Cons: Took a while to figure out how to set the clock

This unit delivers great sound for the money. Provides a lot of control over sound and really shines in bass control. Only complaint would be the size of the buttons and how close they are to one another but that is a problem across the board. I like that Alpine doesn't get involved in all the stupid colors that many of the others do. The menu system is complete but takes a fairly steep learning curve.

    Pros: Nice sound control

Cons: Buttons too small, too close together

    I would buy it again

I replaced the stock head unit in my base Honda Fit to gain an aux jack and get less distortion at high volumes. Wow! Not only did I get my aux jack and power boost, but the clarity is a 100% improvement. Without replacing any speakers, the lows are 4-5x more punchy and the highs are much more clear as well. When I sell the car, the head unit is coming with me!

Pros: Loud Clear Highly adjustable iPhone control from the head unit Looks awesome Sub/pre-amp outputs

    Cons: None so far

Received the purchase 2days after ordering, one week before Christmas, free shipping. Installed in 2003 jeep wrangler (7 speaker system from factory) with minimal hassle, stock mounting bracket cut out and back strapped from upper firewall to climate control divider as the truck goes off highway. Only EXTREME jolts sometimes cause minor skip in CD play. Much easier to learn controls than demonstrated by the manual. Plug-n-Play with stock wiring harness using adapter kit that works with center sub in stock configuration. Improved sound quality was immediately apparent and replacing the front speakers with 4x6's along with new speakers in roll bar boxes allows for even better sound quality as well as greatly increasing broadcast range.

Pros: Very easy installation if soldering/heat shrink done outside the vehicle. So far this product works exactly as expected. Alpine has always been a consistent product in my experience and this unit has, so far, met and/or exceeded this. Excellent value.

Cons: None as of this date.

I have a Mustang GT Premium Convertible with Bassani axle backs and Extreme Energy Comp Cams. I also have the Shaker 1000 in my car. I was concerned about hearing my system with the top down and aftermarket parts but it was way more powerful than the stock radio. The volume and sound clarity, to my surprise, was a non issue. I recommend this unit. System is incredible now. Installation was simple.

Pros: USB and auxiliary ports for my iPod/iPhone and Sirius Satellite Radio. Output volume to my system. Radio display in the sun is visible with the top down. Sound quality is good.

Cons: No Bluetooth but hey when the top is down I doubt it would be beneficial. No HD radio. Radio reception is slightly less efficient as the factory radio. USB does not charge IPod and iPhone when plugged in.

What can you say? It's alpine. Wanted a decent radio to replace my tired stock unit. Not wanting a bunch of extra features that I'll never use this one fit the bill. Added an alpine 45x4 amp and kicker door speakers and it all came alive , threw an all in one sub in the back and done! This head unit has all the features to fine tune the sound to just the way I like it. Tried the bass button And don't think I'll use it much but I can see some might like it . I think it sounds better without . Very clean and has decibel boost for each input to make the sound even between sources. I'd buy again

Pros: Quality seems A1. , more features than I'll use , plug and play with vehicle specific harness , thx Crutchfield.

Cons: Menus , sub menus galore , could use a menu tree with paperwork . But after a few times playing with it, you get the hang of it

This is my first Alpine stereo and definitely my first install on my own. The stereo itself is excellent and has a little bit of heft to it compared to the stock unit I removed, you should thoroughly go thru the manual in order to fully enjoy all of the functions this unit has to offer. The installation is very straight forward and the instructions that Crutchfield included are EXCELLENT!! I was honestly surprised how easy they were to read, follow and understand. You just have to remember and print them off from your Email since they are not included in the box with the stereo. The USB port and Aux input are easily accessible from the front and easy to plug into. Installation this on my own made me feel like a pro.

Pros: Really nice unit for the price.

    Cons: None really..Honest!!

Great quality head unit for it's price, 4 stars on ease of use because of the demo setting which isn't fully explained in the provided manual, you have to go to the general settings and set it to QUITE OFF, other than that it's great. It does everything you need it to do, charge your phone and play through aux or USB if you have a compatible phone, (iphone). 4 Stars for build quality as it is made mostly of plastic which I was a little disappointed by but it makes no difference, I was just thinking it would be metal as my older Alpine Unit was. Overall great Unit for the price and also has a automatic bass mode which adjusts the bass for you, you have to adjust your amps however so it will perform correctly. Good basic unit for the price if you don't need or want bluetooth which I didn't.

    Pros: Simple, quality,

Cons: Little tricky, read the manual haha, made of mostly plastic

This is my first Alpine and I love it. The install was made easy with the dash kit and wire harness I received to install in a 2007 Tacoma double cab. I am very pleased with all the features and the way Crutchfield took care of everything I needed. Also installed Rockford Fosgate Prime R169X2's in the front doors and JL Audio C2-650X in the rear doors. This unit along with the speakers made a huge difference in the Tacoma. Thanks to the folks at Crutchfield for the customer service and great products, now all I need is to amp things up a bit in due time.

I've always been pleased with the quality of the many Alpine products I've purchased in the past. This system for my new truck will be nearly identical to the setup I've had in a few previous regular cab trucks; a simple clean head unit, an amp with plenty of power and the rear channels bridged for the sub, a bazooka behind the seat and the strongest speakers that will fit in the doors.

Pros: Simple clean design and top quality

This is my second Alpine car stereo. I am more satisfied with the second than the first, and I loved the first one. They are good quality and good sound and easy installation. I have seen previous reviews addressing the issues of difficulty navigating the controls. I agree, but like one reviewer said, "Read the Manual". I agree. This system is not intuitive, but once you get the hang of the controls, your frustration level drops to almost zero. The sound quality is amazing. The only reason I don't give 5 stars for all the attributes is that it's rare for me to give 5 stars for anything.

Pros: Great sound and easy installation (even in a 25 Y.O. vehicle) Excellent Value!

Cons: None that I have seen.

This is a great cd player.. it works great and is everything i need out of an alpine head unit.. i choose alpine products because of the quality and reliability that i have had with other apline products in the past and i have never had one fail me yet!! Getting the Cd player out of Demo mode was easy.. for people having trouble with that should just use a simple on line search to be able to figure it out.. if you can work a smart phone then you can work this cd player..

Pros: sound quality preamps EQ setting and adjusting ease of install button feel

Cons: nothing yet that i have came acorss.. although it did not read one of my flash drives but i believe that to be the usb drives fault and not the cd players fault

Purchased as a replacement for my stock head unit because the CD wasn't working. Unit has the ability to use a USB thumb drive... no more CD's required :) Also love the pre-amp output options, front, back AND sub. Haven't really used the built in Base Engine SQ, I use the manual adjustment (sub, base, mid and high). I would purchase one again, great unit.

Pros: Looks cool and the USB port makes CD's a thing of the past. Sub pre-amp outs are great, has a build in filter\crossover for the sub along with volume control, also has front and back outputs. Great search feature that works well when using the USB drive.

Cons: Controls are NOT very straight forward, but once you figure it out they are not bad (gotta read the manual). Controls could also be a bit larger. Unit Does NOT work with an Android phones.

First time I ever bought alpine stereos. They are the best I think.

Pros: The sound quality is great I also added the amp that plugs in the back of the wiring harness model # KTP-445-A. I don't really notice the amp that much though. The stereo sound goes through Polk audio db series speakers front and rear. Its really loud and really clear sounding.

Cons: Don't really have any negatives to it

I was looking for an affordable radio for my truck and gave this one a try. I wasn't expecting much from a 130.00 radio. I was very surprised with the ease of the install and how the unit operates. The sound was much better than I expected, and the features where very easy to understand and use.

Pros: Very good sound quality. Reads mp3 player and Ipod falsely. Good station reception.

Cons: Has hard time reading thumb drives.

I'm improving my sound system in my truck slowly but surely and this deck is a great inexpensive upgrade from a stock stereo. Replaced a Sony Xplod! that died out. It was like switching from standard to hi-def. I have a 96 camry with stock speakers and the quality is exceptional at high volumes. Each instrument stands out with clarity and you can easily tell which mixes are better than others. Awesome Alpine quality.

Pros: Great quality for the price and the usb functionality is inredibly convenient.

Cons: The complete manual has to be downloaded from the internet. You cant use EQ presets and the Bass engine at the same time. File information takes about 2 seconds to be displayed when skipping tracks.

Pros: I love the fact it is simply easy to navigate. No fancy features to mess around with. The build quality of Alpine has always been top notch.

Cons: None so far. First install today, 06/28/2014.

This CD player was a replacement for my last Alpine which quit working after 7 years. The online Crutchfield tech recommended this stereo for me. It was a perfect choice for me because the wiring hookup and mounting bracket were exactly the same as my old Alpine. I just had to pop the old one out and plug in the new one. No extra wiring - yay! I didn't want anything super fancy - just something that could play CD's with good sound quality.

Pros: Same wiring hookup and mounting bracket as last Alpine

Cons: Would rather have a book to learn the control buttons on the stereo - it came with an instructional CD, but I don't keep my computer in the car, which is where the stereo is.

Don't buy this product if you want an easy-to-use car radio! They have a lame print manual, and their CD manual doesn't give you all the answers. It takes a lot of time to work this out. It would have helped if Alpine cared about their UX but they obviously don't. Thank goodness our vendor is helping us, but we'll never buy an Alpine product again!

    Pros:

Cons: Not easy to use. We wished we bought another, more user-friendly system/brand.

I like the sound-shaping choices, but have yet to fully understand how to access them because the included paper manual doesn't fully explain things like how to cancel the "Demo" message that continues to scroll across the display? Some sound-shaping features are easy to access, but others, like the 10 EQ choices are still a mystery. I still don't know how to access those?? Thankfully, Crutchfield is sending me the 68 page manual that isn't included (a CD Rom is included, but I don't have a computer , soooooo nix to printing out a more detailed manual!). The sound quality is much more adjustable than my old Alpine CD player. One thing that doesn't meet my needs is that I have to keep pressing the "Source" button when I want to change from CD to tuner. Maybe the instruction manual that Crutchfield is mailing me will explain how to "skip" 'Aux in' and the 'MP3' option, which I will never, ever use!

Pros: Great sound quality; nice color blue background display; white letter display is easily readable

Cons: Some buttons are too small to easily access, like the face-plate removal button, AND the skip forward and backward buttons are located almost behind the volume knob.

    Disc & USB Playback

Disc Compatibility: The unit features a single disc player that will playback CD-Audio and finalized CD-R/CD-RW audio discs. The unit also supports playback of MP3/WMA music files loaded onto CD-R/RW discs.

Front-Panel USB Port: The Alpine CDE-152 features a front-panel USB (type-A) port that is hidden behind a flip-out cover. The USB port enables connection of a portable USB mass-storage class (MSC) devices; such as select Android smartphones (Froyo/Gingerbread OS only), portable digital audio players, or USB thumbdrives. The USB port supports audio playback and control of MP3/WMA audio files stored on these portable USB mass-storage class devices. USB portable audio players that can be charged via USB will be charged when plugged into the CD receiver's USB port (max. 1A), and the vehicle's ignition switch is set to ACC or On.

MP3/WMA Playback: The Alpine CDE-152 supports the following types of MP3/WMA files recorded onto CD-R/RW disc or loaded onto a USB mass storage class device.

    Media Type CD-R/RW USB MSC
File System ISO 9660 Level 1/2, Joliet, Romeo FAT 12/16/32
    Playable File Types  MP3: bit rate of 8-320 kbps w/ sampling frequency of 8, 11.025, 12, 16, 22.05, 24, 32, 44.1, 48 kHz

Tags ID3 tags (ver.1.0/1.1/2.2/2.3/2.4), WMA tags

Text/File/Folder Search: When you are playing a disc or USB device with ID3 or WMA tags, you can easily search for a track, file, or folder by its title. Once you have activated the search mode, you can use the rotary encoder to quickly scan through the titles to locate the desired track. For discs and USB devices without ID3 or WMA tags, searches are made using the track numbers associated with each song.

Playback Modes: The Alpine CDE-152 offers Repeat and Random playback modes.

    • Repeat: Repeat Play (repeats playback of current track/file), Folder Repeat (repeats only files in current folder).
    • Random: Random Play (all tracks/files on disc are played in random order), Folder Random (only files in current folder are played back in random order).

Off Insert/Eject + Auto Reload: A CD disc can be inserted or ejected with the power off. When a disc is inserted with the power off, the unit will automatically power up and begin playback. When a CD is ejected and left sticking out of the CD slot for 20 seconds, the unit automatically reloads the CD to protect if from damage.

Angle Mounting: For proper CD playback, Alpine recommends mounting the CDE-152 no more that 35° above horizontal.

    iPod/Aux Integration

iPod Direct Connection: The Alpine CDE-152's front-panel USB port can be used to connect your 30-pin dock connector or Lightning-connector iPod/iPhone to the head unit. The CDE-152 supports audio playback, music navigation, information display, and charging of your compatible Apple device.

    • 30-Pin Dock Connector: If you have an older iPod/iPhone with a 30-pin dock connector, you can use Apline's KCU-445i dock connector-to-USB cable (500KCU445I, sold separately) or the dock connector-to-USB cable that comes with your Apple device to connect your iPod/iPhone to the CDE-152.
    • Lightning Connector: If you have a newer iPod/iPhone with the Lightning-connector, you can use Alpine's KCU-471i cable (500KCU471I, sold separately) or the Lightning-to-USB cable that came with your Apple device to connect your iPod/iPhone to the CDE-152.

Note: The head unit's USB connection provides 1A of current to power and charge your connected iPod/iPhone when your vehicle's ignition switch is set to the 'ACC' or 'On' position (if your iPod/iPhone has no initial battery charge, then the unit will not recognize it).

Music Playback w/ DAC Bypass: The Alpine head unit supports audio playback of stored music and music apps on your iPod or iPhone. The USB connection allows your iPod/iPhone's stored music and music apps to be loaded instantly to the head unit and sound quality to be maximized through the head unit's 1-bit D/A converter, allowing for a Signal to Noise ratio up to 105dB.  You can operate your connected iPod/iPhone via the head unit's front-panel controls or from your Apple device's clickwheel/touchscreen.

    • Head Unit: The Alpine CDE-152 lets you navigate the stored music on your iPod/iPhone by Playlist, Artist, Album, Song, Genre, Podcast, Composer, Audiobook, or Genius Mix. Content from each category is listed alphabetically. For especially big music libraries, the Percentage Search function uses the preset buttons for quick jumps to specific parts of the list (Preset 1: 0-16%, Preset 2: 17-32%, Preset 3: 33-49%, Preset 4: 50%-66%, Preset 5: 67-82%, Preset 6: 83-100% of the song library). The head unit also offers three Shuffle playback modes (Album/Song/All) and one Repeat mode (song). Newer iPhones with iOS 6.0+ allow you to continue to use your Apple device's touchscreen to access music apps; older iPod/iPhone devices will be locked during connection.
    • App Direct: In App Direct Mode, you can navigate the stored music on your iPod/iPhone device through its clickwheel or touchscreen; as well as music apps on an iPhone (iOS 3.0+). Basic playback functions, such as Play/Pause and Previous/Next Track are still available from the head unit. Not all apps will be compatible with this mode.
Note: Access to your iPhone's downloaded applications will depend on the availability of a cellular and/or WiFi network for purposes of allowing your iPhone to connect to the Internet.

Song/Artist Information: The Alpine CD receiver will display your iPod/iPhone's music file information in Head Unit or App Direct Mode. The CDE-152 will display Track Number, Elapsed Time, Artist Name, Song/Album Title, and Station Identification for stored music and music apps.

You can change the name on the display to match the type of device connected to the front panel input; Auxiliary, TV, DVD, Portable, or Game.

    Audio & Tuner Section

CEA-2006 Compliant: The specifications given by Alpine for the built-in amplifier comply with the CEA-2006 mobile amplifier power testing and measurement standards from the CEA (Consumer Electronics Association). All manufacturers who comply with the standard can display the CEA-2006 logo on their product.

    • CEA-2006 Power Rating: 18 watts x 4 channels (at 4 ohms, 20-20kHz, 1% THD)
    • Max Power Output: 50 watts x 4 channels
Note: Add the KTP-445 (500KTP445, sold separately) Head Unit Power Pack to deliver 45 watts x 4-channel RMS of power. The KTP-445 is compact enough to install behind the Alpine CD receiver. It plugs in-line with the head unit's wiring harness, so you don't even need additional wires.

6ch/2V Preamp Outputs: The CDE-152 has three sets of 2-Volt RCA pre-outs (Front/Rear/Sub) for connection of external amplifiers. The unit's front & rear preamp output can be faded, while the subwoofer preamp output is non-fading. When an external amplifier is connected sound quality can be improved by stopping the power supply of the built-in amplifier.

Subwoofer Control: When the non-fading subwoofer preamp output is activated, you can adjust the subwoofer's volume, low-pass filter, & phase.

    • Volume System: There are two volume (system) modes for the unit's subwoofer output. System 1 (subwoofer level changes according to the main volume setting) or System 2 ( subwoofer level change is different from the main volume setting (0-15); even at low volume settings, the subwoofer is still audible.
    • Low Pass Filter: The unit's subwoofer output low-pass filter can be set to 60, 80, 120, 160 Hz, or Off (through).
    • Subwoofer Phase: The subwoofer output phase can be set to Normal (0°) or Reverse (180°).

Equalizer: You can select from 11 different EQ presets to get the best sound from all your sources. You can choose from Flat, Pops, Rock, News, Jazz, Electric Dance, Hip-Hop, Easy Listening, Country, Classical, or User. The User Preset activates the head unit's 3-Band Parametric Equalizer for a better sound response curve. Bass, Mid, & Treble can be adjusted in the 3-Band Parametric mode.

    3-Band EQ
    Frequency Q-Factor Level
    Bass 60Hz, 80Hz, 100Hz, or 120Hz   Wide 0.5, Medium 1.0, Medium 1.5, or Narrow. 2.0 -7 to +7 (+/-14dB in 2dB steps)
    Midrange 500Hz, 1.0kHz, 1.5kHz, or 2.5kHz Wide 0.75, Medium 1.0, Medium 1.25, or Narrow 1.5 -7 to +7 (+/-14dB in 2dB steps)
    Treble 7.5kHz, 10kHz, 12.5kHz, or 15kHz Wide 0.75 or Narrow 1.25 -7 to +7 (+/-14dB in 2dB steps)
Note: The units stores independent EQ settings for each source (Disc, Tuner, Aux, USB, and iPod).

Audio Enhancements: The CDE-152 offers the following audio adjustments to enhance your in-car listening experience.

    • Bass Engine SQ: Bass Engine SQ tuning is a new feature that changes bass sound characteristics by automatically adjusting different combinations of EQ, Sub Level, and Crossover settings through the choice of seven level adjustments (0-6).
    • Loudness: Loudness introduces a special low frequency emphasis (100Hz/10dB) at low listening levels to compensate for the ear's decreased sensitivity to bass sound at low volume.
    • Source Volume Level: The output level of each source (Tuner, Disc, USB, iPod,  Aux) is individually adjustable from -14 to + 14 dB.

Beep Guide: This function will give audible feedback with varying tones depending upon the button pressed. The volume of this feature can be set from 0-7.

AM/FM Tuner: The Alpine CDE-152 features a built-in AM/FM tuner with manual, seek, and preset tuning. The built-in tuner provides 12 FM and 6 AM preset stations. Stations can be preset manually or automatically. Local seek tuning lets you tune in only those radio stations with sufficiently strong signals for good reception. I don't know. I would imagine it is if you have the headphone jack in the phone and plug it in with a 3.5 cable. My daughter uses said cable and jack with her iphone and it works. I like to just put my music on the jumpdrive. [ SHELDON  Jan 23, 2015 ]
We don't use the Android phone system. But the unit does all the specs say. Easy to use, sounds better than the original in the BMW with the original speakers. [ JOE  Jan 20, 2015 ]

Not really sure Jeremy, I have an iPhone and it works fine. You might want to call tech at crutch field as they are very helpful. [ ROLAND  Jan 18, 2015 ]
