Our take on the Alpine CDE-154BT

by Ken Nail
Alpine

Why replace your factory radio?

Two good reasons - sound quality and cool features. A new car stereo offers power that's superior to most factory radios, along with more sophisticated tone controls. And most car stereos offer built-in or optional features that add safety and fun to life in your car, including inputs for your iPod or MP3 player, Bluetooth connectivity for hands-free cell phone calls, satellite radio or HD Radio reception, and connections for building an audio system in your car.

Alpine Authorized Online Dealer

Great sound — for your car

Alpine has built its reputation on producing a stellar in-car audio experience, and the CDE-154BT CD receiver builds on that tradition with innovative technology. For instance, you can download Alpine's updated TuneIt 2.0 smartphone app to your iPhone® or Android™ smartphone and take charge of this Alpine's extensive sound adjustment capabilities. You'll see a simple touchscreen interface that lets you adjust settings yourself, or you can apply settings created by Alpine for your specific vehicle. You can even share your settings with other users through Facebook, and check out settings others have created for your vehicle.

Better Bluetooth audio streaming

Alpine CDE-154BT

The CDE-154BT combines distinctive Alpine styling with a 2-line display.

The CDE-154BT features built-in Bluetooth for hands-free calling and audio streaming. Thanks to receiver's Bluetooth microphone, you can access Siri with Alpine's Eyes Free mode when your compatible iPhone is linked to the receiver — letting you keep your eyes on the road while you interact with your iPhone. If you've been less than thrilled with the sound of streaming audio in the past, Alpine's exclusive Digital Signal Processing technology improves the sound of streaming music or stored music files sent from your device to the receiver.

More sound options

If you're looking to add some punch to your tunes, press the Bass Engine SQ button for easy access to the receiver's sophisticated bass controls, including five bass profiles that you can customize through the TuneIt app. And if you're tired of having that great FM station fade away, you can add an optional SiriusXM tuner to enjoy the unparalleled variety of music, news, sports, and talk programming that follows you wherever you drive.

Want to keep your steering wheel controls?

In most vehicles you can use an adapter (not included) to connect your vehicle's steering wheel controls to this Alpine stereo. Connect a few wires, then program the adapter for your particular car and the Alpine, and you'll retain the convenience of your steering wheel controls. Check the "Accessories" tab for compatible adapters.

Bluetooth note: Use of this receiver's Bluetooth features will depend upon your phone's Bluetooth capabilities. Learn more in our article explaining Bluetooth profiles.

iPod/smartphone note: If you're going to use your iPod or smartphone with this receiver, be sure to check "Details" for compatibility information.

    Built-in Bluetooth

Bluetooth Technology: The Alpine CDE-154BT features built-in Bluetooth (ver. 2.1+EDR) technology. The head unit's built-in Bluetooth allows you to make and receive phone calls wirelessly through the receiver; as well as stream music wirelessly from your smartphone to the head unit. In order to use Bluetooth wireless technology, your phone must also be Bluetooth compatible and be able to interpret certain profiles. This unit is compatible with the following Bluetooth Profiles:

    • Hands-Free Communication: HFP 1.5 (Hands Free Profile), HSP (Head Set Profile), OPP 1.1 (Object Push Profile), PBAB 1.0 (Phone Book Access Profile).
    • Audio Streaming: A2DP 1.2 (Advanced Audio Distribution Profile), AVRCP 1.4 (Audio/Video Remote Control Profile).
Note: Due to the differences in Bluetooth technology, some Bluetooth enabled devices may be incompatible, function improperly, or may not support all features when used with the Alpine CDE-154BT.

Secure Simple Pairing (SSP) + Auto Pairing (for iPhone): With Secure Simple Pairing (SSP), you can easily pair a Bluetooth enabled phone to the Alpine CDE-154BT without having to enter pin codes or go through complicated settings. When a registered Bluetooth device is in close proximity to the receiver, the auto connection function automatically pairs the two units. You can register up to three Bluetooth-enabled devices with the Alpine head unit (only one device can be used at a time). You can also pair your Apple iPhone (iOS 5.0+) by simply connecting it to the Alpine head unit via USB and following a single prompt on the head unit's display.

Hands-Free Communication: The head unit supports Bluetooth hands-free communication for your Bluetooth enabled mobile phone (including iPhone & Android). The controls of the CDE-154BT can be used to dial a number, answer an in-coming call, or end a call. The unit also includes an external microphone, so you can carry on your side of the conversation while listening to the caller through your vehicles speakers. During a conversation, you can initiate a transfer of audio between your mobile phone and your car's speakers.

    • Receiving Calls: The Alpine CDE-154BT provides a couple ways to answer your phone calls without picking up your mobile phone. Incoming calls are announced by a caller ring tone through your vehicle's speakers (music will be muted) & a Caller ID message across your Alpine head unit's display.
      • Manual Answer: Manually answer an incoming call by pressing the "Phone" button on your Alpine head unit.
      • Automatic Answer: Set the Alpine head unit to answer the incoming call automatically; when a call is received, it is answered automatically after approximately 5 seconds.
      • Call Waiting: If a second call is received during a current call, you can have the first caller wait momentarily while you take the second call. When you are finished with one call, you can switch to the other.
    • Placing Calls: The Alpine CDE-154BT provides a variety of functions for placing a phone call without using your mobile phone. The Alpine CDE-154BT features full phone book access, call history, voice tag dialing, and redial with compatible phones.
      • Voice Dialing: If you have a voice-dial capable phone, you can dial a phone contact by simply speaking the name of your contact.
      • Phonebook (with ABC search): Up to 1,000 contacts (5 telephone numbers for each name) can be downloaded from your compatible mobile phone. You can select the first 3 call letters (ABC) to search for a desired name in your phonebook.
      • Preset Dialing: You can assign phone numbers that you dial frequently to presets (1-6) for quick recall. You can assign up to six frequently called phone numbers. A total of 18 phone numbers can be stored in the preset memory (6 numbers for each mobile phone paired).
      • Call History: The previously dialed, received, or missed numbers (20 each) can be retrieved and dialed from memory.
Note: The external microphone is tuned and engineered to reduce noise interference and feedback. This allows optimal placement in your car, for the best possible sound quality. You can adjust the microphone's volume level; and even mute the microphone, so your voice will not be heard by the caller. The external microphone measures 0.5625" (diameter) x 1.625" (deep); and features an attached 13' cable terminated by a right-angle male 3.5mm connector.

Audio Streaming (w/ Advanced Music Navigation): The Alpine CDE-154BT can stream music from your Bluetooth A2DP/AVRCP mobile device. Not only can it control & stream your music through Bluetooth, it can process your music using its built-in DSP Sound Expansion to ensure you get the best sound. In addition to basic playback functions (Play/Pause, FF/RW, Skip, Random/Repeat), the CDE-154BT provides a Search List of your stored music by Playlist, Artist, Album, Song, Genre, etc.. (AVRCP 1.4 phones only). The head unit will also display your stored music's song information; such as Artist name & Song/Album title. The CDE-154BT even supports audio streaming of music apps on your Bluetooth-enabled smartphone with limited control and song/artist information. You will continue to use your Bluetooth enabled smartphone to control advanced music navigation.

Note: When an incoming call or outgoing call is in progress from your Bluetooth enabled mobile phone, audio streaming will be paused so you can take your call. Once the call is finished, your streaming music will resume.

Siri Eyes Free Control: When paired and connected with an iPhone 4S or 5/5C/5S via Bluetooth (not USB), the Alpine CDE-154BT has the ability to access Siri through its front-panel controls and external microphone. Simply press-and-hold down on the head unit's Answer Button to engage Siri and use the included microphone to communicate with Siri. Siri's voice will heard through your vehicle's speakers. All Siri functions including hands-free calling, music search, setting reminders, text-messaging, audible navigation, and more can be done through the CDE-154BT and its microphone. The head unit's display will only indicate hands-free calling and Bluetooth audio information (all other functions of Siri are only audible through the Alpine CDE-154BT; visual data will still need to be viewed from your iPhone device).

Note: You can ask Siri to get directions to a destination and the turn-by-turn instructions will heard through your vehicle's speakers, while the on-screen map still displays on your iPhone 4S/5/5C/5S. The head unit's audio is attenuated while Siri provides audible directions.

Bluetooth Sound Quality Adjustments: You can customize the sound of your Bluetooth hands-free experience to fit your own preferences. You can adjust the CDE-154BT's mic gain, phone output, & ring tone volume. If that's not enough, there are 5 sound quality settings to choose from to get the balance just right for you. This flexibility will make your phone calls a pleasurable experience.

    • Volume Adjustments: You can emphasize or weaken the volume level of phone call, the ring tone, and the microphone input to fit your own preference. The Phone Talk Level, Ring Tone, & Mic Gain are all adjustable between -5 to + 5 dB.
    • Sound Types: This unit provides 5 methods to improve the sound quality of your calls. You can choose the type according to your own preference - Type 1 (standard mode), Type 2 (enhances noise reduction), Type 3 (enhances echo-cancellation), Type 4 (enhances both noise reduction & echo cancellation), & Type 5 (weakens both noise reduction & echo-cancellation).

Speaker Output: You can select which car speaker outputs the audio from your Bluetooth-enabled mobile phone/device.

    • All: The audio will be output from all of the speakers in the car
    • F-L: The sound is only output from the front left speaker.
    • F-R: The sound is only output from the front right speaker.
    • F-LR: The sound is output from the front left and front right speakers.

    Disc & USB Playback

Disc Compatibility: The unit features a single disc player that will playback CD-Audio and finalized CD-R/CD-RW audio discs. The unit also supports playback of MP3/WMA music files loaded onto CD-R/RW discs.

Rear-Panel USB Port: The Alpine CDE-154BT features a rear-panel USB (type-A) port attached to the rear chassis by a 9" cord and includes a 5' USB extension cable. The USB port enables connection of a portable USB mass-storage class (MSC) devices; such as select Android smartphones (Froyo/Gingerbread OS only), portable digital audio players, or USB thumbdrives. The USB port supports audio playback and control of MP3/WMA audio files stored on these portable USB mass-storage class devices. USB portable audio players that can be charged via USB will be charged when plugged into the CD receiver's USB port (max. 1A), and the vehicle's ignition switch is set to ACC or On.

MP3/WMA Playback: The Alpine CDE-154BT supports the following types of MP3/WMA files recorded onto CD-R/RW disc or loaded onto a USB mass storage class device.

Once you have activated the search mode, you can use the rotary encoder to quickly scan through the titles to locate the desired track. For discs and USB devices without ID3 or WMA tags, searches are made using the track numbers associated with each song.

Playback Modes: The Alpine CDE-154BT offers Repeat and Random playback modes.

    • Repeat: Repeat Play (repeats playback of current track/file), Folder Repeat (repeats only files in current folder).

When a CD is ejected and left sticking out of the CD slot for 20 seconds, the unit automatically reloads the CD to protect if from damage.

Angle Mounting: For proper CD playback, Alpine recommends mounting the CDE-154BT no more that 35° above horizontal.

    iPod/Aux Integration

iPod Direct Connection: The Alpine CDE-154BT's rear-panel USB port can be used to connect your 30-pin dock connector or Lightning-connector iPod/iPhone to the head unit. The CDE-154BT supports audio playback, music navigation, information display, and charging of your compatible Apple device.

    • 30-Pin Dock Connector: If you have an older iPod/iPhone with a 30-pin dock connector, you can use Apline's KCU-445i dock connector-to-USB cable (500KCU445I, sold separately) or the dock connector-to-USB cable that comes with your Apple device to connect your iPod/iPhone to the CDE-154BT.
    • Lightning Connector: If you have a newer iPod/iPhone with the Lightning-connector, you can use the Lightning-to-USB cable that came with your Apple device to connect your iPod/iPhone to the CDE-154BT.

Note: The head unit's USB connection provides 1A of current to power and charge your connected iPod/iPhone when your vehicle's ignition switch is set to the 'ACC' or 'On' position (if your iPod/iPhone has no initial battery charge, then the unit will not recognize it).

Music Playback w/ DAC Bypass: The Alpine head unit supports audio playback of stored music and music apps on your iPod or iPhone. The USB connection allows your iPod/iPhone's stored music and music apps to be loaded instantly to the head unit and sound quality to be maximized through the head unit's 24-bit D/A converter, allowing for a Signal to Noise ratio up to 105dB.  You can operate your connected iPod/iPhone via the head unit's front-panel controls or from your Apple device's clickwheel/touchscreen.

    • Head Unit: The Alpine CDE-154BT lets you navigate the stored music on your iPod/iPhone by Playlist, Artist, Album, Song, Genre, Podcast, Composer, Audiobook, or Genius Mix. You can then search these categories alphabetically (A-Z). For especially big music libraries, the Percentage Search function uses the preset buttons for quick jumps to specific parts of the list (Preset 1: 0-16%, Preset 2: 17-32%, Preset 3: 33-49%, Preset 4: 50%-66%, Preset 5: 67-82%, Preset 6: 83-100% of the song library). The head unit also offers three Shuffle playback modes (Album/Song/All) and one Repeat mode (song). Newer iPhones with iOS 6.0+ allow you to continue to use your Apple device's touchscreen to access music apps; older iPod/iPhone devices will be locked during connection.
    • App Direct: In App Direct Mode, you can navigate the stored music on your iPod/iPhone device through its clickwheel or touchscreen; as well as music apps on an iPhone (iOS 3.0+). Basic playback functions, such as Play/Pause and Previous/Next Track are still available from the head unit. Not all apps will be compatible with this mode.
Note: Access to your iPhone's downloaded applications will depend on the availability of a cellular and/or WiFi network for purposes of allowing your iPhone to connect to the Internet.

Song/Artist Information: The Alpine CD receiver will display your iPod/iPhone's music file information in Head Unit or App Direct Mode. The CDE-154BT will display Track Number, Elapsed Time, Artist Name, Song/Album Title, and Station Identification for stored music and music apps.

    Audio Section

24-Bit D/A Converter: The Alpine CDE-154BT uses a 24-bit D/A converter for superb sound quality and playback of your music.

CEA-2006 Compliant: The specifications given by Alpine for the built-in amplifier comply with the CEA-2006 mobile amplifier power testing and measurement standards from the CEA (Consumer Electronics Association). All manufacturers who comply with the standard can display the CEA-2006 logo on their product.

    • CEA-2006 Power Rating: 18 watts x 4 channels (at 4 ohms, 20-20kHz, 1% THD)
    • Max Power Output: 50 watts x 4 channels
Note: Add the KTP-445 (500KTP445, sold separately) Head Unit Power Pack to deliver 45 watts x 4-channel RMS of power. The KTP-445 is compact enough to install behind the Alpine CD receiver. It plugs in-line with the head unit's wiring harness, so you don't even need additional wires.

6ch/4V Preamp Outputs: The CDE-154BT has three sets of 4-Volt RCA pre-outs (Front/Rear/Sub) for connection of external amplifiers. The unit's front & rear preamp output can be faded, while the subwoofer preamp output is non-fading. When an external amplifier is connected sound quality can be improved by stopping the power supply of the built-in amplifier.

Subwoofer Control: When the non-fading subwoofer preamp output is activated, you can adjust the subwoofer's volume, low-pass filter, & phase.

    • Volume: There are two volume (system) modes for the unit's subwoofer output. System 1 (subwoofer level changes according to the main volume setting) or System 2 ( subwoofer level change is different from the main volume setting (0-15); even at low volume settings, the subwoofer is still audible.
    • Low Pass Filter: The unit's subwoofer output low-pass filter can be set to 60, 80, 120, 160 Hz, or Off (through).
    • Subwoofer Phase: The subwoofer output phase can be set to Normal (0°) or Reverse (180°).

High Pass Filter (for Front & Rear): The Alpine head unit is equipped with a high-pass filter for its speaker-level output and front-channel preamp output (when activated). You can set the unit's high-pass filter to 20Hz, 25Hz, 31.5Hz, 40Hz, 50Hz, 63Hz, 80Hz, 100Hz, 125Hz, 160Hz, 200Hz, or Off (through). The slope of the high pass filter can be set to 6, 12, 18, or 24 dB/oct.

Preset/9-Band EQ: You can select from 11 different EQ presets to get the best sound from all your sources. You can choose from Flat, Pops, Rock, News, Jazz, Electric Dance, Hip-Hop, Easy Listening, Country, Classical, or User. Using the head unit's 9-Band EQ (in User mode), you can modify the EQ settings to create a response curve more appealing to your personal taste.

    Band Frequency Q-Width Level

    9 9 kHz - 20 kHz

Audio Enhancements: The CDE-154BT offers the following audio adjustments to enhance your in-car listening experience.

    • Media Xpander: Alpine's exclusive Media Xpander is engineered to bring out the musical details lost in compressed media, and it is adjustable per source to get the most out of your digital audio media. The Media Expander makes vocals or instruments sound distinct regardless of the music source. You can customize the Media Xpander to suit your personal taste by adjusting the level (0-8) for Bass, Mids, and Highs. The FM radio, Disc, USB, iPod, Pandora, Bluetooth, and Aux will be able to reproduce the music more clearly even in vehicles with a lot of road noise.
    • Bass Engine SQ: Bass Engine SQ tuning is a new feature that changes bass sound characteristics by automatically adjusting different combinations of EQ, Sub Level, and Crossover settings through the choice of five bass profiles (Standard, Punch, Rich, Mid Bass, and Low Bass); only customizable through TuneIt app for Apple iOS and Android devices. You can adjust the effect level (0-6) of the selected profile from the head unit.
    • Source Volume Level: The output level of each source (Tuner, Disc, USB, iPod, Bluetooth, Pandora, Aux) is individually adjustable from -14 to + 14 dB.

TuneIt App: TuneIt is an easy-to-use sound-tuning app that also offers Facebook notifications. Download this free app (from iTunes or GooglePlay) onto your Apple iPhone (iOS 5.0+ ) or Android smartphone (2.2+) and create a user profile about your vehicle and sound system. Your iPhone must be connected to the CDE-154BT via the appropriate Alpine iPod connector cable (500KCU445I, sold separately) or the Dock-/Lightning-cable that came with your iPhone. Your Android smartphone must support A2DP/AVRCP/SPP Bluetooth profiles and be paired with the Alpine receiver. Your iPhone or Android smartphone will also need an active Data Plan account with connection to the Internet via 3G, EDGE, or WiFi.

    • Sound Tuning: The TuneIt app turns your iPhone or Android smartphone into a sound tuning interface for the CDE-154BT. Follow the simple TuneIt graphical instructions on your phone to adjust sound settings for your specific vehicle or choose from pre-made settings in the database. Settings that can be adjusted include Parametric EQ, Bass Engine SQ, Crossover, and Media Xpander. As you change settings on your smartphone, you will hear the results, so you can customize the sound to exactly how you want it. You can make and save up to 100 different sound settings in your account, which is helpful if you want various settings to use for specific types of music. After tuning your system, upload your settings to the Alpine Cloud Server to share them with other Alpine fans. You can also check out other user's settings and rate them. The more active you are, the higher your profile status progresses within the app.
    • Facebook Notifications: The TuneIt app also keeps you in touch with your Facebook friends. When you receive a notification, you will get a visual alert on the smartphone and the head unit, plus a sound alert through your car speakers. The visual notification includes the Facebook icon and the sender's name, with the profile picture shown on the phone. You are then able to listen to the notification via TTS (Text-to-Speech) through the head unit and your vehicle's speaker. You can even "Like" the notification from the head unit's front-panel controls. In order to receive Facebook notifications on the head unit, the TuneIt app must be the active app on your smartphone.

Note: Access to TuneIt will depend on the availability of a cellular and/or WiFi network for purposes of allowing your iPhone or smartphone to connect to the Internet. You will also need to turn on the GPS function of your phone.

Beep Guide: This function will give audible feedback with varying tones depending upon the button pressed. The volume of this feature can be set from 0-7.

    Display Features

Detachable Face: The unit's front-panel is detachable to deter theft; a hard storage case is included to protect the faceplate once detached. An optional soft face case (142DFC1X, sold separately) can also be purchased for this unit. A face-fixing screw is supplied for making the face non-detachable, if desired.

2-Line LCD Display: This unit is equipped with a 2-Line backlit LCD, so you can easily view AM/FM stations and ID-3/WMA tag information.

Text Display: The CD receiver will display the folder name, the file name, and the tag information, while playing a USB device loaded with MP3/WMA music files. This unit can scroll the text information of MP3/WMA files, folder names, and tags. There are two Text Scroll settings.

    • Auto: The information of folder and file names, and the tags are scrolled automatically.
    • Manual: The display is scrolled when a when a track is changed.

Variable Color Illumination: The Alpine CDE-154BT features variable color display and button illumination. You can choose from one of 30 preset colors or customize your own color (RGB; 0-60). The custom setting allows you to individually adjust the intensity of Red, Green, and Blue (from 0-60) to better match your vehicle's interior lights. The same color setting is applied to both the display and buttons.

Spectrum Analyzer: When a song is played, the spectrum analyzer is displayed on the left side of the LCD. You can adjust the display style of the Spectrum Analyzer according to your personal preference. Select between Type A (longitudinal wave), Type B (Block), or Type C (Radial).

Auto Dimmer: This unit is equipped with an illumination lead (orange); when the unit's dimmer mode is set to Auto and the illumination lead is connected to your vehicle's headlight circuit, the display and button illumination will dim to a fixed, preset level whenever the headlights are turned on. If preferred, you may choose the Manual dimmer mode setting, so the display and button illumination is dim at all times.

Stay On Mode: You can set the delay in turning off the head unit's power after the vehicle's ignition is turned off. When you select a source mode, other than Off, the music will be paused after you turn the ignition key off. At the same time, the prompt "Press Preset 6 to Stay On" will scroll once. Press Preset 6 within 15 seconds to continue to listen to your music for the select period of time (off/5/15/30 min). If Preset 6 is not pressed, the unit will power off within 15 seconds. During this period, you can only receive a call by operating your paired smartphone.

Note: There is a possibility that the battery may be drained if already week during Stay On Mode.

Demo Mode: This unit has a demonstration feature for its display which can be turned On or Off in the menu.

    Remote Control

Steering Wheel Remote Compatibility: The head unit features an OEM steering wheel remote control input on the rear of the unit that lets you keep your vehicle's factory radio steering wheel remote controls when used with an optional steering wheel audio control adapter (sold separately). Please consult Crutchfield's Outfit My Car to see if your vehicle is compatible.

Optional Wireless Remote: The Alpine CDE-154BT is wireless remote control ready. Simply add on the Alpine RUE-4202 IR remote (500RUE4202, sold separately) to make it even easier to control the head unit's functions.

    Fantastic

This is a fantastic head unit. I needed something that had great screen contrast, as I despise when I can't see the text against the background. The background on this one stays nice and dark so the text really pops out. Big plus. The Sirius integration and bluetooth work really well, no problems using either.
    Pros:
Screen clarity, ease of installation, bluetooth streaming from my Droid Maxx, big easy to press buttons and volume knob.
    Cons:
Tuning. The head unit menu for tuning is a bit difficult to use, a lot of the advanced features are buried deep in menus, which can get frustrating. HOWEVER, if you can use their TuneIt phone app to tune, this resolves that issue.

    Alpine cde-154bt is great

That head unit was exceptional! I am a typical college student who likes great loud sound with a lot of bass and that is exactly what this stereo offered. The controls take maybe a week to get used to so you can do everything without looking at it. But the iPod, pandora and fm radio are excellent and the subwoofer control feature is the best. I listen to almost every genre of music and I like the bass heavy with dubstep and very little for some acoustic rock and it is easy to change. I haven't even had this product for a year yet so I can't rate the build quality that well but I haven't had a single issue.
    Pros:
Louder sound than stock More input options Bluetooth with voice control w/iPhone Excellent sound clarity Display color changes to match any car dash Has subwoofer controls
    Cons:
Confusing to install in 2001 honda civic (also partly the kits problem) Can get a glare sometimes on the display Can't see track title and time together.

Bought this unit for my 06 Civic based on many reviews. Sound quality noticeably better than OEM. Looks cool. Love the second data line on the display, but seems like there could be a permanent spot to display the clock. Only started digging into the features (ops manual is 50+ freakin pages). Screen is very difficult to read in daylight, but I already expected this.
    Pros:
    sound quality, many features
    Cons:
    daylight readability, many features

The sound quality was light years ahead of the factory radio. Truly unbelievable, and made me wonder why I did not install such a fine radio years ago.
    Pros:
Good instructions and easy to install.
    Cons:
The printed instructions left a bit to be desired, but the use instruction on the included CD was well designed.

Mounted in 2008 Lexus RX 350, and with the provided trim kit, it looks like a factory install. Sound, even with stock speakers is just so much more nuanced and clear. Took a couple readings of the owners manual, to catch on to menu system, but I am just amazed at what is packed into this head unit. BT works like a charm, calls are loud and clear on both ends, and the Alpine TuneIT 2.0 app is amazing... I prefer a clean neutral sound, and the parametric equalizer helped me get very close to a flat response curve... even with those stock speakers.
    Pros:
Clean look, quality of sound, parametric equalizer
    Cons:
Install is not for the feint of heart, but incredible tech support talked me off the ledge several times, and we got it right the first time.

    Disappointed

I've had a lot of Alpine headunits over the years starting with a 7863, and then 7977, 105, 9886, and 9887. Besides the 105 the others all sounded exceptional. You were always able to impress with the sound quality of those models. The 154bt is mediocre at best. I would never in my life believe that a Kenwood could sound better than a comparably priced Alpine but the ddx371 I exchanged it for is on a different level. Ive been into car audio a long time and Im very confident to say if you're considering this headunit dont get it. The Pandora worked ok but had frequent issues, the bluetooth phone volume was extremely loud compared to what your listening volume was so until you remember to turn it down before answering you get blasted. The FM tuner was weak, The Sirius XM sounds like there was a blanket over the speakers. This was just a flop for Alpine. Hopefully the next generation models get better.
    Pros:
    Pandora
    Cons:
Sound Quality was 6/10 compared to older Alpines, The button to move backwards in the menus would stick every time you pressed it and then loudly pop out

Sweet but "Siri Eyes Free" is frustrating to put it in nice terms

Written By Zulma, Western New York on Monday, March 31, 2014
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I first ordered the Pioneer MVH-X560BT MP3/USB All Digital Car Stereo Receiver that offered pretty much the same functions for my 2002 Mercedes E320 W210 Wagon. I was replacing the OEM radio. Purchased everything I needed, the Metra 70-1786 Radio Wiring Harness and Metra 40-VW12 VW Antenna Adapter. After 8 hours and still no sound from my Bose speakers I sent the Pioneer radio back to Amazon. I ended up getting this head unit and it only took about 15 minutes to connect the wires and everything was up and I could hear the sound of music! It took the same exact wiring harness and antenna adapter as the Pioneer but this receiver had the port for the Bose amp unlike the Pioneer. I lost the steering wheel controls but I tickled pink with the bluetooth capabilities for music and phone calls. I am considering getting the PAC SWI-CAN2 and PAC SWI-RC wiring harnesses to get my steering wheel control back.

In regards to setup, you will need to do some playing around on your own. The manual is very basic. I had to figure out about the illumination and some of the other features by trial and error. I am still trying to figure out if more than one smartphone can be paired at once without having to turn off the bluetooth on one of the other phones in the radio's vicinity.

Calling and receiving calls can be heard crystal clear. Handling the calls can be done by the phone icon button or by the "go back" button. The phonebook is automatically loaded and the names are displayed in large font. Scrolling through the phone options like missed and received calls, phonebook and calling out are done through the volume/selection knob.

You can also download an app called TuneIt. Here is the explanation I found online since the manual was so vague:

"TuneIt is an easy-to-use sound tuning app which also offers Facebook notifications. Users download the free app onto their iPhone® or Android(tm) smartphone and create a user profile with information about themselves, their vehicle, and their Alpine sound system. They can follow the simple TuneIt graphical instructions to adjust sound settings for their specific vehicle, or they can choose from the 3, 000 pre-made settings in the database. Settings that can be adjusted include Time Correction, Parametric EQ, Crossover, and Media Xpander. The user can make and save up to 100 different sound settings; which is helpful if the user wants to store various settings to use for specific types of music.

Users can share settings with others, as well as rate settings made by others. The sharing and learning aspect of TuneIt is especially helpful for novices without much sound tuning experience, since it allows those with similar setups to use the same settings for the best results. The more frequently the user is active within the app, the higher his or her status progresses, from the "Roadie" level all the way up to the advanced level of "Master Golden Ear." TuneIt's sound setting activities are all done through
    Pros:
Purchase of radio comes with wiring harness (Crutchfield.com) Not too many buttons making it user friendly Change color illumination Smartphone TuntIt feature Facebook notification Two line display text Steering Wheel Control input
    Cons:
Siri Eyes does not respond well Manual is vague

    Another Great Alpine Receiver

Written By Earl, Las Cruces, NM on Sunday, March 23, 2014
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Installed the unit in a 2003 2500HD Chevy with the Bose System. This was a very easy install with the adaptor I purchased for the Bose System amplifier and speakers that stayed in place. If you can read a wiring diagram it is a simple matter of connecting the two wiring harnesses together. It then becomes plug and play. The Alpine sounds so much better than the factory unit it is a pleasure to listen to. I just installed it yesterday so I am still playing with the controls. My HTC One paired up with no trouble, also my wife's I phone 5. So far all in all a good experience.
    Pros:

    loving it!

Written By MichaelC., Purcell, Mo on Sunday, March 23, 2014

After a month of looking at head units I decided on the cde-154bt mainly for features and my local stereo shop assured me of excellent SQ. This unit is replacing my faithful pioneer deh-p6800mp which i loved i just wanted up to date features and retain SQ. This unit sounds amazing considering I'm still adjusting to adjusting the eq from the unit and from the tuneit app.
    Pros:
Great SQ, loaded with features like bluetooth, pandora, and it's the only brand of head unit compatible with android devices! Plus it looks great its clean and simple face with two line readout.
    Cons:
Remote sold seperately! EQ settings are confusing. Remote sold seperately! EQ settings are confusing. REMOTE SOLD SEPERATELY!

Very nice upgrade from previous deck.

Written By AndrewA, Seattle, WA on Friday, March 21, 2014
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I've been wanting to upgrade my deck in my truck for some time. Finally decided to go with the CDE-154BT, despite not having reviews at the time of purchase. I am very happy with it. Lots of features packed into it. Like a previous reviewer mentioned, the cd that came with the unit has a lot more in depth explanations than the actual manual that's in the box.

My previous deck was an Alpine iDA-X305. Although I loved it, I really needed a Bluetooth capable deck, and something compatible with my iPhone 5c. A major plus, I didn't have to use the wiring harness that came with the unit and the one that I had to purchase from Crutchfield! I just unplugged the old deck, ran the microphone wire, and plugged in the new deck. Simple! I'm gonna have to thank Alpine for utilizing the same harness from previous models.

My only gripe, the back button sticks. I have to manually dislodge it after each press.
    Pros:
Easy installation if you have an older alpine unit Lots of sound shaping capabilities Separate source volume settings Ease of use
    Cons:
    Back button sticks

    Alpine CDE-154BT

Very high quality unit. A bit hard to configure all the functions, it helps to be familiar with Alpine units. This replaced a Sony unit in my 2001 Chevy Tahoe, and is a much better unit.
    Pros:
Easy installation, neat look, great sound.
    Cons:
    A bit tricky to program.

    Pretty Good Radio

Written By Aaronee, Lake Mary, FL on Monday, March 17, 2014
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Overall I'm relatively happy with this radio. For a Single Din Radio I think I purchased the best currently out there. You may want to consider just the single display line model, the dual display helps some but is not leveraged as well as I would have expected.
    Pros:
    - Extensive Manual on PDF File -Extensive settings options for audio, bluetooth, etc. -Pandora works through either USB connection or Blue Tooth -The phone app is pretty cool for controlling the radio settings, -Playlists are accessible through Blue Tooth (many radios can change playlist from the display) -Most common features have bigger buttons -Menu's show you "most common" features first then you drill down to the details settings, so something like balance or base level is adjusted e
    Cons:
    - Some of the less used buttons feel very soft, like they might be sticking or are of poor quality, however no worse then other single din radios. - Printed Manual is limited -No online FAQ or information yet -Dual Line Display is not used to full effect, I'm not sure it was worth the extra $40 for an extra line that isn't used. For example in order to have the time displayed, you have to give up having any information displayed about the audio that's playing (Song title, etc)

Very nice head unit, easy to use and great tune ability highly recommended for all types of systems.
    Pros:
Great color options for illumination. 9 band eq for tuning along for tuning per band. Very clear and great power for sound to speakers. Absolutely easy to install and built strong. Costs was great to purchase unlike some headunits!

    Alpine CDE-154BT

Great head unit. Have to mess with the Bluetooth sometimes. But it always works. Had to get an interface with mine. PAC makes a terrible interface. It blew within a week. Overall great stereo only downfall is that I was excited to use the tune it app but the cde154bt isn't on there but it is tune it compatible.

Does this unit have the ability to play a usb memory card? [ stoner  Jul 13, 2014 ]
    5 answers
    • You can only play thru a remote device, it doea have the USB cabe connection. I play my I-POD this way. [ ROBERT   Jul 15, 2014 ]
    • Hi, Your question is confusing me a little. It can play music from a USB flashdrive but it does not have any slots for SD memory cards. It has a one USB port that comes from the back of the unit via a long cable. Hope this helps! [ ZULMA   Jul 14, 2014 ]
    • Yea, it comes with a cable that you can plug in a jump drive or a iPhone or something into it. [ JOSHUA   Jul 14, 2014 ]
    • Yes! Works nicely. [ SEAN   Jul 14, 2014 ]
    • If you can plug it into a USB slot in a computer, this will play it. It has a USB port in the back and comes with an extension that'll reach you glove box. You can plus it in there. [ ALAN   Jul 13, 2014 ]
how do you change the color of the display? the variable rgb illumination.cant find it anywere in the manual. [ william  Apr 09, 2014 ]
    5 answers
    • Hold down the Audio button in the upper left corner and go into the setup menu. Find the display menu. You can choose one of the available colors or enter the RGB values of a particular color. [ LINCOLN-SHAUN   Apr 14, 2014 ]
    • The manual is useless. There is miles more information in the CD the stereo came with. I look at least three times before I plugged the CD. Good Luck! [ KEENAN   Apr 10, 2014 ]
    • Hold audio/setup, scroll down to display, then illumination, and bam! [ JOSHUA   Apr 09, 2014 ]
    • LOL- it took me forever as well. Under menu options (hit audio button for two seconds), scroll till you get to display options, then chose illumination. However, you can only chose one color, you cannot have it scroll through all the colors continuously. [ ZULMA   Apr 09, 2014 ]
    • Hold the audio/setup button at the top and scroll thru the list and select Display. There should be a setting called Illumination, select that and you should be there. [ DAN   Apr 09, 2014 ]
