Our take on the Alpine CDE-9845

Alpine Authorized Online Dealer

There's a long road ahead of you, and it definitely needs a soundtrack. That's why Alpine's CDE-9845 CD receiver plays discs loaded with MP3s and WMAs! You can load up to ten hours of music on a single disc, perfect for those times when getting from point A to point B means driving across long stretches of open highway. Alpine's Quick Search function lets you navigate through your folders and files speedily, giving you more time to enjoy the tunes.

Of course, musical variety for its own sake isn't enough for Alpine — it has to sound good, too. Enter Bass Engine® which gives you tight control over the bass and treble output. BBE® sound processing is also on board, which ensures that the lows and highs blend correctly for natural sound reproduction.

System expansion definitely gets its due here, too. If you want to bolster the power output to your speakers and subs, you can connect external amplifiers to the two sets of preamp outputs. Got a portable player, like an iPod? The rear-panel minijack auxiliary input will gladly accept it, giving you even more listening options.

Features

CEA-2006 Compliant: The specifications given by Alpine for the built-in amplifier comply with the CEA-2006 mobile amplifier power testing and measurement standards from the CEA (Consumer Electronics Association). All manufacturers who comply with the standard can display the CEA-2006 logo on their product.

Switchable Button Color: The illumination of the 4 main buttons (Source/Power, Band, |<<, and >>|) can be switched to any of 4 colors: Blue, Green, Amber, and Red. When the illumination is set to Blue or Green, the color of the other buttons is Green. When the illumination is set to Amber or Red, the color of the other buttons is Amber.

Dimmer: This unit is equipped with an illumination dimmer lead. When the unit's dimmer mode has been set to "Auto" and the illumination lead has been connected to your vehicle's headlight circuit, the button illumination will dim to a fixed, preset level whenever the headlights are turned on. If preferred, you may choose the "Manual" dimmer mode setting, so the button illumination is dim at all times.

Bass Engine: Bass Engine functions provide control over your system, so you can tailor the sound to your personal tastes. Bass Engine includes the following functions:

  • Bass Control:
    • Bass Center Frequency: Select from 60Hz, 80Hz, 100Hz, or 120Hz
    • Bass Band Width: Select from 1 (narrow) to 4 (wide)
    • Bass Level: Select from -7 to +10
  • Treble Control:
    • Treble Center Frequency: Select from 7.5kHz, 10kHz, 12.5kHz or 15kHz
    • Treble Level: -7 to +7

BBE: BBE makes vocals or instruments sound distinct regardless of the music source. You can select the level of the BBE effect (1, 2, or 3), or turn BBE off. Note: You can set different levels of BBE for each source. BBE is not available for AM radio.

Switchable Rear/Subwoofer Preout: The rear preamp outputs can be switched to a non-fading subwoofer preamp output with a variable output of 0 to +15. When the subwoofer is activated in the Setup menu, the preout is switched at the same time. When the subwoofer is deactivated, the preout is switched back to a rear channel output.

MP3/WMA Playback: This unit can play CD-ROM, CD-R, and CD-RW discs containing MP3/WMA files recorded using the ISO 9660 Level 1 or Level 2 formats. MP3 files with constant and variable bit rates from 8 kbps to 320 kbps and WMA files with constant and variable bit rates from 48 kbps to 192 kbps are supported. Discs recorded using Joliet, Romeo, or other ISSO 9660 compliant formats can be played, but file and folder names will not be displayed correctly. Discs containing both standard CD audio and MP3/WMA data can be played; the unit may be set to play only the CD audio tracks or both types of tracks. ID3 tag v1 and v2, and WMA tag are supported; track title, artist name and album name ID3 tag data can be displayed.

Disc and Station Titling: Titles of up to 8 characters in length may be entered for up to 24 radio stations and 18 CDs.

Text/File/Folder Search: When you're playing a disc with CD Text, or MP3/WMA tags, you can easily search for a track or file by its title. Once you have activated the search mode, you can use the rotary encoder to quickly scan through the titles to locate the desired track, and select it by pressing the rotary encoder.

Auxiliary Input: The CDE-9845 is equipped with a rear-mounted 3.5mm female mini-jack auxiliary input. In the Setup menu, you can activate/deactivate the Aux Input. When activated, you can choose a name for the input from the following: Auxiliary, TV, VCR, or Game.

Power IC Off: When an external amplifier is connected and the built-in amplifier is not used, removing power from the built-in amplifier will improve the sound quality.

Clock Display Note

Clock Operation: This unit allows you to choose "keyed" or "unit on" clock operation. When the clock has been given display priority and the unit is turned off, the clock will be displayed whenever the ignition key is in the "on" or "accessory" position. If the clock is not given display priority, the clock is not displayed when the unit is off.

The liltle things matter

Written By Spilly85, Missouri on Monday, August 17, 2009

"Alpine". That should say a lot. Overall the unit is good, plays all the CD-R and formats I need and sound is good also. I expect quite a bit from Alpine and that's why I'm disappointed in 'the little things'. These little things are small nuisances at first and get an initial "huh" but once the new wears off these become a real annoyance. The most annoying, Inserting/Ejecting a CD interrupts the radio, is one small example that makes you ask the question "Why?". What QA person said, "Ehh, it's not that big of a deal".
I do have to brag on Crutchfiled while I'm here. I've dealt with them since the early eighties and they are FAR above any electronics outfitter I have ever encountered, professionally and personally. Your support staff is one huge part of it. Keep up the great work and thanks to Crutchfield for taking the time to notice the little things.

Sound quality blows away my previous factory head unit.

Written By Alan, Gainesville, FL on Monday, May 01, 2006

I bought this unit to replace the factory CD player in my '96 Chevy Monte Carlo.

Sound quality is a great deal better than the factory unit, the sound spectrum seems to be distributed much more evenly across the board, even with the same set of speakers. I ran the preamps to an existing amp and 8" sub in the trunk, and I really like being able to adjust the bass crossover frequency from the unit rather than switches on a discrete crossover unit.

MP3 disc capability is great, I love now being able to stack my system with tons of my favorite tunes and not have to constantly swap discs.

The only downside, occasionally the scrolling marquee freezes when in MP3 title display mode, scrolling through the modes or changing tracks often works around this though. Not a big deal considering the play quality is unaffected.

Would definitely buy from Crutchfield again, the pre-sales consultation and installation assistance were invaluable.

Alpine CDE-9845

Written By Mark, Detroit, MI on Tuesday, April 25, 2006

Have experience with many head units over the years; this is my 1st Alpine. For what it's worth, the following is worth noting:
1. The face plate exhibits a terrible glare which makes it nearly impossible to read except during nighttime or very cloudy days.
2. There is no "Scan" feature for the tuner.
3. You cannot display both the clock and the tuner frequency or call letters at the same time; you have to choose one or the other.
4. The auto dimmer feature only dims the 4 large buttons on the left side, and then only very slightly.
5. The user manual is pretty much useless in terms of the installation instructions, e.g., it recommends a metal strap and screws to support the rear of the radio however, those parts are not supplied with the radio.

Unique Feature: This radio has a Female 3.5mm stereo Aux input jack on the rear. This means you have to install a Male 3.5mm stereo cable into this jack during the radio installation (since it isn't accessable after installation) and route the cable to the front of the IP for your accessary (IPOD, satellite radio ,etc.). This is not as convenient as an Aux input on the front of the radio.

On the plus side, this radio has very good sound, flexible settings, and a clean install since there are not many wires on the rear (no CD changer cable, no RCA cables, etc.) I would rate this radio higher if it had a more legible display.

Forester Install Tip

Written By Neonwater, Calif on Wednesday, April 19, 2006

Very good as a replacement for my 06 Subaru Forester. Better sound and reception, not to mention mp3/cd capability and iPod connectivity via a $4 mini plug cable.
I liked this model so I can control the iPod from the iPod, not the head unit. It's better for passengers to pass around the iPod and play DJ and not reach for the radio and discract me from driving. I like that it had no fold down faceplate. It does come with a hard faceplate case. If anyone is installing in a Forester, try using a 1-2 inch metal putty knife to get to the clips around the trim piece around the radio. The instruction sheet is a little lacking in telling you HOW to get to those. Push the knife in and pry the trim out, one clip at a time. A screwdriver will scratch the finish.
I would buy this unit again. This is my third system purchase from Crutchfield-never any problems.

Excellent features at an excellent price.

Written By Andre, Rockville, MD on Friday, April 07, 2006

I was searching for a headunit to replace my stock C33 in my 1996 BMW 328i and I came across this one. It had everything I needed: it is an Alpine, has an auxillary unit (for my iPod), and turns amber to match the color of my interior lights. These three key features are what caused me to buy it in the first place but everything else was just incredible as well.

I got the headunit, a wiring harness (free), an antenna adapter (free), a crimp tool with 20 pieces ($6), Instructions (free), a 6 foot 3.5 MM jack ($5, for the Auxillary jack) and cable labels (free, but didn't use them), for $180 with shipping included. A fantastic price for all this stuff and their customer service is second to none. I thought my aux cable was defective so they sent me a new one, free of charge, but turns out I had one wire wired incorrectly which they told me how to fix and everything ran perfectly afterwards.

All I can say is that Crutchfield is the best and this headunit made my stock speakers sound amazing and my iPod never sounded better. Thanks Crutchfield and thanks Alpine.

Alpine CDE-9845

Written By Nick, Upstate, New York on Sunday, April 02, 2006

Good headunit. Better then what was originaly in my civic, but what aftermarket headunit isn't. The controls are easy to memorize. Bass and trebel easily adjustable. The aux input is a nice touch for plugging in mp3 players/ipods. 2 sets of preamp outputs. Only thing I don't like about it is, its lacking in power alittle, but thats why I just bought an amp. Otherwise good headunit, buy it while its on sale.

Awesome Player

Written By johnny, Rota, Spain on Saturday, April 01, 2006

I installed this to replace my OEM in my 98 Benz. I like it very much, it made a big difference to the sound coming out of the original speakers. You could easily tailor the bass and treble to your liking. I just wish this comes in black to match everything else in my dashboard panel.

Great price for a great deck.

Written By Todd, Centreville, VA on Wednesday, March 29, 2006

I just installed this in my 2004 Mazda 3 and it looks beautiful. I wanted a unit that would allow me to play my ipod through the stereo but not control the ipod's playback. This sound is so much more crisp then when I was using a FM modulator. The dash kit provided fit like a glove and was a very easy install. Surprisingly this unit can change the color of the buttons from Gree, Blue, Red and Amber, the last of which matches my intrument panel perfectly. This unit is solid and I am always a big fan of volumn knobs over buttons. The navigation through MP3 disks is a little tricky but I dont plan on doing it too often b/c of the ipod. Overall I am very pleased. The sound quality has great increased along with the volume of the system. Now its time to save for some speakers and an amp!

Excellent product for the $$$

Written By Scottyblackspider, Frisco, TX on Tuesday, March 28, 2006

I researched head units for my 2002 Chevy Silverado for quite some time, and I decided upon this unit due to the Alpine reputation, the specifications of the CDE-9845, the price, and the features. I wasn't looking for something too fancy, just a good CD player with an auxiliary input and the ability to play mp3/WMA discs. Most importantly, I wanted the audio quality to be top-notch. My research definitely paid off, because I am exceptionally happy with my decision to purchase this awesome head unit. Even though it is not as flashy as some other brands in it's price range, i.e. Pioneer and JVC, the audio quality far exceeds them. I couldn't be happier and Alpine certainly gained a loyal customer. Crutchfied gained a loyal customer in me as well. This was my first purchase from Crutchfield and the experience was great. The pricing was way competetive, shipping was fast, customer service was very helpful and friendly, and the technical knowledgebase is one of the most comprehensive/best that I have seen. Much thanks to Alpine and Crutchfield.

Awesome!

Written By JOSE, Panama City, Florida on Tuesday, March 28, 2006

I bought this radio through the Scratch and Dent here at Crutchfield.com. It far exceeded my expectations. I have Audiobahn front and rear speakers, a powered Bazooka 8" Sub and a powered Metrik 8" Sub and it sounds much better than my stock radio. The sound is crisp and clear. I love the fact that it gives you some control over many of the sound settings. You will need to read the instruction manual to understand the settings but with some practice is not difficult. I would recommend an amplifier since the built in amp is not enough if you want more power and better sound. I'm completely satisfied with this purchase, I'm glad I didn't get the Pioneer I was looking at.
