Our take on the Alpine CDE-HD148BT

by Ken Nail
Alpine

Why replace your factory radio?

Two good reasons - sound quality and cool features. A new car stereo offers power that's superior to most factory radios, along with more sophisticated tone controls. And most car stereos offer built-in or optional features that add safety and fun to life in your car, including inputs for your iPod or MP3 player, Bluetooth connectivity for hands-free cell phone calls, satellite radio or HD Radio reception, and connections for building an audio system in your car.

Alpine Authorized Online Dealer

The best-sounding radio

The CDE-HD148BT CD receiver will appeal to AM/FM radio fans everywhere with its built-in HD Radio™ tuner. Stations broadcasting an HD Radio signal offer a digital signal with FM that sounds nearly on par with a CD, and smooth -sounding AM that doesn't crackle with static on those hot summer nights. And many HD Radio stations offer multicasting, letting you enjoy different programming options on the same frequency. If you want to take your radio listening to the outer limits, you can also add a SiriusXM tuner to this receiver (subscription required) and enjoy unparalleled choices in news, talk, sports, and commercial-free music.

Alpine CDE-HD148BT

The CDE-HD148BT can tune into the improved sound quality of HD Radio stations.

Bluetooth® safety and convenience

Built-in Bluetooth lets you make and take calls hands-free when you're in the car, so you can keep your attention on the road while you talk — no fumbling for the phone or driving with one hand in busy traffic. And you can stream audio from your Bluetooth devices too, with receiver control of basic functions like track up and down. Plus, Alpine's Quad illumination lets you choose from four different colors for the receiver's control buttons for a style that'll work in your car.

Sound quality from the cloud

Alpine's new TuneIt App lets you tap into the power of your Android™, iPhone®, and the cloud to customize this receiver's sound output for your car. Download the TuneIt app and you'll have access to over 3000 custom sound parameters from Alpine's servers. The sound parameters tailor the CDE-HD148BT's 9-band equalizer, digital time correction, high- and low-pass filters, and Media Xpander to tune your system to match your car model, car type, and listening position. And you can share your custom settings with others and even get feedback through Facebook.

Plenty of listening options

The CDE-HD148BT features a handy front-panel auxiliary input and a rear USB port with extension cable. Plug into the USB port for full control over the music stored on your iPhone or iPod®, while Alpine's App Direct Mode lets you control basic playback and view song/artist info from many iPhone music apps. Of course you can enjoy your CDs too, including recordable discs.

System expansion

Want more power? You can add Alpine's KTP-445 Power Pack amplifier, a compact plug-and-play solution that brings this receiver's power output up to 45 watts RMS per channel. Or you can hook up conventional external amplifiers to the three sets of high-voltage preamp outputs to create a killer system for your ride.

Want to keep your steering wheel controls?

In most vehicles, you can use an adapter (not included) to connect your vehicle's steering wheel controls to this Alpine stereo. Connect a few wires, then program the adapter for your particular car and the Alpine, and you'll retain the convenience of your steering wheel controls. Check the "Accessories" tab for compatible adapters.

Bluetooth note: Use of this receiver's Bluetooth features will depend upon your phone's Bluetooth capabilities. Learn more in our article explaining Bluetooth profiles.

iPod note: If you're going to use your iPod with this receiver, be sure to check "Details" for specific iPod model compatibility with this receiver or its optional iPod adapter.

    HD+Pandora+SiriusXM Radio

HD Radio: With the built-in HD Radio tuner, you can receive digital AM/FM broadcasts from local stations where available. HD Radio lets you listen to the radio with the same fidelity as your digital music. HD Radio features high quality audio, FM multi-casting, and data services. With HD Radio, your FM stations offer near CD-quality sound, AM stations provide FM-like sound, and there is crystal-clear reception with no audio distortion. Best of all, HD Radio is 100% subscription free.

    • Station Text: AM/FM digital stations can offer text and data such as artist names and song titles. The built-in HD Radio tuner displays song title, artist and station information on the display of the Alpine CDE-HD148BT.
    • Multicasting: Multicasting is the ability to broadcast multiple program streams over a single AM/FM frequency. this increases the amount and diversity of content choices. A maximum of eight multicast station channels (HD1-HD8) can be selected on this unit.
    • Preset Tuning: The built-in tuner provides 12 FM and 6 AM preset stations. Stations can be preset manually or automatically. Sub-program services of multicast stations are not included in the automatic memory search.
    • Search Functions: The Alpine CDE-HD148BT offers various search functions to help you find the analog or digital AM/FM stations you are looking for. You can search for only digital AM/FM stations (Digital mode), or both analog & digital AM/FM stations (Hybrid mode). Local seek tuning lets you tune in only those radio stations with sufficiently strong signals for good reception. Distance seek tuning allows both strong and weak stations to be tuned. You can even search for a radio station by its frequency, using the head unit's rotary encoder.
    • Listening Modes: The head unit provides four reception methods in order to receive Digital & Analog AM/FM signals according to your own preference and signal strength. Choose from Hybrid (receives both digital and analog stations; if the digital signal is weak, this mode will switch to receive the analog radio signal automatically), Digital (receives only digital radio signals even when the digital signal is weak), Digital MC (receives the digital radio signal while listening to a sub-program service of a multicast station), or Analog (only receives the analog radio signal, even when the digital signal is strong).
    • Live Mode: While receiving a live AM/FM broadcast, you can select an optimized receiving method according to your own preference and the signal strength. Choose from Analog (while receiving a live broadcast this unit will only receive the analog radio signal even when the digital signal can be received), Digital (while receiving a live broadcast this unit will keep receiving the digital radio signal even when the digital signal is week), or Listen (while receiving a live broadcast this unit will use one of the Listening Modes - Hybrid/Digital/Digital MC/Analog).
    • FM Tone Quality: You can set your preferred tonal quality, when listening to FM analog radio stations. You can choose between HiFi (high-quality sound), Normal (standard setting), or Stable (noise control).
    • iTunes Tagging: It is possible to save the song's information (tag) from and HD Radio broadcasting station to your USB-direct connected iPod/iPhone. The songs will show up in a playlist called "Tagged" in iTunes the next time you sync your iPod/iPhone. Then you can directly buy the songs you want from the iTunes Music Store. You can "tag" up to 50 songs. Your iPod/iPhone must have at least 50MB of free space to "tag" and transfer songs. iTunes 7.4 or later is required to purchase "tagged" songs.
Note: More than 2,000 radio stations are broadcasting their primary signals in digital HD Radio technology, as a free service. Go to www.hdradio.com to check for HD Radio stations in your area.

Your Android smartphone must support A2DP/AVRCP/SPP Bluetooth profiles and be paired with the Alpine receiver. Your iPhone or Android smartphone will also need an active Data Plan account with connection to the Internet via 3G, EDGE, or WiFi. • Thumbs Up/Down: You can give songs a thumbs up or thumbs down to help Pandora personalize stations to suit your preferences.

Hands-Free Communication: The head unit supports Bluetooth hands-free communication for your Bluetooth enabled mobile phone (including iPhone & Android). The controls of the CDE-HD148BT can be used to dial a number, answer an in-coming call, or end a call. • Preset Dialing: You can assign phone numbers that you dial frequently to presets (1-6) for quick recall. You can assign up to six frequently called phone numbers. A total of 18 phone numbers can be stored in the preset memory (6 numbers for each mobile phone paired).
      • Call History: The previously dialed, received, or missed numbers (20 each) can be retrieved and dialed from memory.
Note: During a conversation, you can initiate a transfer of audio between your mobile phone and your car's speakers.

External Microphone with Noise Cancellation: The included external microphone (with visor-clip) allows you to speak to the other party on the telephone call hands-free, while the other party's voice is played through your car stereo speakers. The external microphone is tuned and engineered to reduce noise interference and feedback. This allows optimal placement in your car, for the best possible sound quality. You can adjust the microphone's volume level; and even mute the microphone, so your voice will not be heard by the caller. The external microphone measures 0.5625" (diameter) x 1.625" (deep); and features an attached 13' cable terminated by a right-angle male 3.5mm connector.

Audio Streaming (w/ Advanced Music Navigation): The Alpine CDE-HD148BT can stream music from your Bluetooth A2DP/AVRCP mobile device (such as your iPhone or Android smartphone). Not only can it control & stream your music through Bluetooth, it can process your music using its built-in DSP Sound Expansion to ensure you get the best sound. In addition to basic playback functions (Play/Pause, FF/RW, Skip, Random/Repeat), the CDE-HD148BT provides a Search List of your stored music by Playlist, Artist, Album, Song, etc.. (AVRCP 1.4 phones only). The head unit will also display your stored music's song information; such as Artist name & Song/Album title. The CDE-HD148BT even supports audio streaming of music apps on your Bluetooth-enabled smartphone with song/artist information and limited control (continue to use your Bluetooth enabled smartphone to control advanced music app navigation).

Note: When an incoming call or outgoing call is in progress from your Bluetooth enabled mobile phone, audio streaming will be paused so you can take your call. Once the call is finished, your streaming music will resume.

Siri Digital Assistant Control: When paired and connected with an iPhone 4S or 5/5C/5S via Bluetooth (not USB), the Alpine CDE-HD148BT has the ability to access Siri through its front-panel controls and external microphone. Simply press-and-hold down on the head unit's "VOICE CTRL" button to engage Siri and use the included microphone to communicate with Siri. Siri's voice will heard through your vehicle's speakers. All Siri functions including hands-free calling, music search, setting reminders, text-messaging, audible navigation, and more can be done through the CDE-HD148BT and its microphone. The head unit's display will only indicate hands-free calling and Bluetooth audio information (all other functions of Siri are only audible through the Alpine CDE-HD148BT ; visual data will still need to be viewed from your iPhone device).

Note: You can ask Siri to get directions to a destination and the turn-by-turn instructions will heard through your vehicle's speakers, while the on-screen map still displays on your iPhone 4S/5/5C/5S. The head unit's audio is attenuated while Siri provides audible directions.

CEA-2006 Compliant: The specifications given by Alpine for the built-in amplifier comply with the CEA-2006 mobile amplifier power testing and measurement standards from the CEA (Consumer Electronics Association). All manufacturers who comply with the standard can display the CEA-2006 logo on their product.

    • CEA-2006 Power Rating: 18 watts x 4 channels (at 4 ohms, 20-20kHz, 1% THD)
    • Max Power Output: 50 watts x 4 channels
Note: Add the KTP-445A (500KTP445A, sold separately) Head Unit Power Pack to deliver 45 watts x 4-channel RMS of power. The KTP-445A is compact enough to install behind the Alpine CD receiver. It plugs in-line with the head unit's wiring harness, so you don't even need additional wires.

6ch/4V Preamp Outputs: The CDE-HD148BT has three sets of 4-Volt RCA pre-outs (Front/Rear/Sub) for connection of external amplifiers. The unit's front & rear preamp output can be faded, while the subwoofer preamp output is non-fading.

Note: When an external amplifier is connected sound quality can be improved by stopping the power supply of the built-in amplifier.

Subwoofer Control: When the non-fading subwoofer preamp output is activated, you can adjust the subwoofer's volume, low-pass filter, & phase.

    • Volume: There are two volume (system) modes for the unit's subwoofer output. System 1 (subwoofer level changes according to the main volume setting) or System 2 ( subwoofer level change is different from the main volume setting (0-15); even at low volume settings, the subwoofer is still audible.
    • Low Pass Filter: The unit's subwoofer output low-pass filter can be set to 20Hz, 25Hz, 31.5Hz, 40Hz, 50Hz, 63Hz, 80Hz, 100Hz, 125Hz, 160Hz, 200Hz, or Off (through). The slope of the low pass filter can be set to 6, 12, 18, or 24 dB/oct.

High Pass Filter (for Front & Rear): The Alpine head unit is equipped with a high-pass filter for its speaker-level output and front-channel preamp output (when activated). You can set the unit's high-pass filter to 20Hz, 25Hz, 31.5Hz, 40Hz, 50Hz, 63Hz, 80Hz, 100Hz, 125Hz, 160Hz, 200Hz, or Off (through). The slope of the high pass filter can be set to 6, 12, 18, or 24 dB/oct.

    2 63 Hz - 315 Hz
    3 125 Hz - 500 Hz
    4 250 Hz - 1 kHz
    5 500 Hz - 2 kHz

    9 9 kHz - 20 kHz
Note: The settings of the 9-Band EQ, Time Correction, and X-over can be stored in the preset memory (1-6).

Audio Enhancements: The CDE-HD148BT offers the following audio adjustments to enhance your in-car listening experience.

    • Media Xpander: Alpine's exclusive Media Xpander is engineered to bring out the musical details lost in compressed media, and it is adjustable per source to get the most out of your digital audio media. The Media Expander makes vocals or instruments sound distinct regardless of the music source. You can customize the Media Xpander to suit your personal taste by adjusting the level (0-8) for Bass, Mids, and Highs. The FM radio, CD, USB, iPod, Pandora, Bluetooth, and Aux will be able to reproduce the music more clearly even in vehicles with a lot of road noise.
    • Time Correction: This unit is able to delay the audio signal to the speakers closest to the listener with its built-in Time Correction feature. This effectively creates a perception of increased distance for those speakers. Time Correction allows the listener to be placed at an equal distance between the left and right speakers for optimum staging. You can adjust the distance (0-132.7") of each speaker and subwoofer to the listener.
    • Spatial: This feature allows you to change the soundstage of your music in the vehicle. You can select from three modes.
      • Front Wide: Creates the effect of widening the front sound field by delaying the sound of the front speakers.
      • Rear Wide: Creates the effect of making the front sound image clear and far by delaying the sound of the rear speakers.
      • Off: No effect is applied (default)
    • Source Volume Level: The output level of each source (Tuner, Disc, USB, iPod, Bluetooth, Pandora, Aux) is individually adjustable from -14 to + 14 dB.

TuneIt App: TuneIt is an easy-to-use sound-tuning app that also offers Facebook notifications. Download this free app onto your Apple iPhone 4/4S/5 (via iTunes) or Android smartphone (coming soon via Google Play) and create a user profile about your vehicle and sound system. Your iPhone must be connected to the CDE-HD148BT via the appropriate Alpine iPod connector cable (500KCU445I, sold separately) or the Dock-/Lightning-cable that came with your iPhone. Your Android smartphone must support A2DP/AVRCP/SPP Bluetooth profiles and be paired with the Alpine receiver. Your iPhone or Android smartphone will also need an active Data Plan account with connection to the Internet via 3G, EDGE, or WiFi.

    • Sound Tuning: The TuneIt app turns your iPhone or Android smartphone into a sound tuning interface for the CDE-HD148BT . Follow the simple TuneIt graphical instructions on your phone to adjust sound settings for your specific vehicle or choose from pre-made settings in the database. Settings that can be adjusted include Time Correction, Parametric EQ, Crossover, and Media Xpander. As you change settings on your smartphone, you will hear the results, so you can customize the sound to exactly how you want it. You can make and save up to 100 different sound settings in your account, which is helpful if you want various settings to use for specific types of music. After tuning your system, upload your settings to the Alpine Cloud Server to share them with other Alpine fans. You can also check out other user's settings and rate them. The more active you are, the higher your profile status progresses within the app.
    • Facebook Notifications: The TuneIt app also keeps you in touch with your Facebook friends. When you receive a notification, you will get a visual alert on the smartphone and the head unit, plus a sound alert through your car speakers. The visual notification includes the Facebook icon and the sender's name, with the profile picture shown on the phone. In order to receive Facebook notifications on the head unit, the TuneIt app must be the active app on your smartphone.
Note: Access to TuneIt will depend on the availability of a cellular and/or WiFi network for purposes of allowing your iPhone or smartphone to connect to the Internet. You will also need to turn on the GPS function of your phone.

Beep Guide: This function will give audible feedback with varying tones depending upon the button pressed. The volume of this feature can be set from 0-7.

    Display Features

Detachable Face: The unit features a single front loading CD face that detaches from the chassis to deter theft. A hard plastic face case is provided to store the detachable faceplate. An optional soft face case (142DFC1X, sold separately) can also be purchased for this unit. A face-fixing screw is supplied for making the face non-detachable, if desired.

2-Line LCD: This unit is equipped with a 2-Line white-backlit LCD, so you can easily view AM/FM stations, CD-Text, and ID-3/WMA/AAC tag information.

Text Display: Text information, such as the disc name and the track name, will be displayed if playing a CD text compatible disc. It is also possible to display the folder name, the file name, and the tag information, while playing a MP3/WMA/AAC disc or USB device. This unit can scroll the disc and track names recorded on CD-Text disc, as well as the text information of MP3/WMA/AAC files, folder names, and tags. There are two Text Scroll settings.

    • Auto: The CD text information, the information of folder and file names, and the tags are scrolled automatically.
    • Manual: The display is scrolled when a disc is loaded or when a track is changed.

Variable Color Button Illumination: The head unit lets you choose between Blue, Green, Red, or Amber button illumination. The LCD text will remain white.

Auto Dimmer: This unit is equipped with an illumination lead (orange); when the unit's dimmer mode is set to Auto and the illumination lead is connected to your vehicle's headlight circuit, the display and button illumination will dim to a fixed, preset level whenever the headlights are turned on. If preferred, you may choose the Manual dimmer mode setting, so the display and button illumination is dim at all times.

Demo Mode: This unit has a demonstration feature for its display which can be turned On or Off in the menu.

    Remote Control

Steering Wheel Remote Compatibility: The head unit features an OEM steering wheel remote control input on the rear of the unit that lets you keep your vehicle's factory radio steering wheel remote controls when used with an optional steering wheel audio control adapter (sold separately). Please consult Crutchfield's Outfit My Car to see if your vehicle is compatible.

Optional Wireless Remote: The Alpine CDE-HD148BT is wireless remote control ready. Simply add on the Alpine RUE-4202 IR remote (500RUE4202, sold separately) to make it even easier to control the head unit's functions.

    Alpine CDE-148BT in a 2002 Honda Accord

Written By Lance, Whitestone, NY on Wednesday, July 23, 2014
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Good solid radio with awesome features. It falls flat when it comes to bass, you either need to add a subwoofer or Apline needs to add a bass boost for a bit more punch
    Pros:
Love the Bluetooth and the idea of making custom tunings for your car.
    Cons:
TuneIt takes a while to figure out, and its lacking bass punch. This stereo would be awesome with a bass boost.

Great unit for my car. This replaced a factory unit and I couldn't be happier. Sounds 100% better and the bluetooth/hands free calling works perfect with my android phone. Easy install thanks to Crutchfield's install sheet and customer service. I also bought the alpine power pack amp and it was a plug and play install and fit easily behind the dash and it really made the unit come to life.
    Pros:
Bluetooth, hands free calling, sound quality, HD radio...all easy to use and very nice features...
    Cons:
Wish the instruction manual from alpine came printed instead of being on a cd for your computer...

    Excellent Radio

Written By Jason, Denver, CO on Monday, June 09, 2014
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

My first new car radio self-install in 20+ years. It went very smoothly with excellent help from the Crutchfield technical team. The radio looks and sounds great and is a major upgrade to our 2004 4Runner!
    Pros:
Ease of install, connectivity options, iPhone and Siri integration, hands-free calling, and sound quality
    Cons:
Nothing major. A good value, especially for an older car.

Nicely made. Substantial. Has the look and feel (buttons) of a quality unit. I wanted to keep my factory BMW (1986) radio, but it finally died. I'm fussy about quality. I wanted something that would look and perform just as good if not better. And have all the new capabilities. I'll make no apologies for this unit. Even with the old speakers it sounds great.
    Pros:
Fully adjustable sound. Not much bling.

    CDE-HD148BT Review

Written By Gaz, Montana, USA on Saturday, May 17, 2014

I have had this receiver for almost a year now. It is an overall great product. The only feature I have ever really used is the bluetooth. I get in my car and start it up, and the receiver links to the iPhone 5 in my pocket right away and I can control the music and the phone straight from the deck. There is only one problem. After almost a year of use, the bluetooth doesn't work anymore. The receiver won't pair with anything. I have tried resetting, and I have followed all directions and I can't get it to work. I won't bother trying to fix it. I don't plan on putting any more money into my current vehicle. I plan on getting a new one. Everything else about the deck is great. This will probably be my last Alpine deck. I have had two previous Alpine decks and they were all great. I just think it's time for something different.

    Amazing Head Unit

Written By Lucas M., St. Marie, MT on Friday, May 02, 2014
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Once again Alpine has blown me away with another high quality head unit!!! I have been running Alpine head units for about 14 years now, and every time I upgrade, I am just blown away and speechless!!! Feature packed awesomeness!!! Controls everything right from the head unit. It literally does everything anyone could ever want!!! I tested the head unit powering my upgraded speakers, sounded amazing. Now I am running JBL amp, and MTX Thunder 8000 12" sub, and this deck lets me adjust anything and everything on the fly as I see fit, I couldn't ask for anything more!!!
    Pros:
Awesome features, controls every aspect of your system right at your fingertips, the sound quality is second to NONE!!! Color changing face :-D , easy installation, usb and aux hookups, 4 volt preouts for amp installs!!! LOVE IT!!!
    Cons:
as amazing as this unit is, I often find it to be a bit time consuming to navigate through all of the features, that is one thing I wish they would have added easy buttons for.

Everything You'll Need in a Stereo Headunit

Written By CarloL, Wayne, NJ on Thursday, April 24, 2014
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Recently installed this stereo in my 02' Accord. I was looking for a stereo with iPod connectivity, and Bluetooth. This unit exceeded my expectations. Its a great all around receiver, plus it comes with HD Radio which makes listening to the radio so much better. I also am impressed by how great the hand-free calling feature works. I haven't had anyone complain about the phone breaking up while using the hands-free feature. The unit's sound output is much better than my stock stereo and I haven't even configured the Tuneit feature yet. With that said, I'm sure the Tuneit feature will make it sound even better.
    Pros:
Overall, this is a nice higher end receiver that allows for easy upgrades such as adding an amplifier. I haven't yet added an amp, but can't wait to hear the sound improvement. Especially since this receiver has 3 sets of pre-amp outputs pushing 4V each.
    Cons:
Some of the menus are a little confusing at first. Had to print out the instruction manual included on CD. It doesn't take long to get the hang of it, but once you do you'll realize how easy it is to use.

Had this head unit installed for a couple weeks now. Lots of hidden features/settings, but I can't bothered to read the manual, so I discover them on my own as I go. Sound quality is excellent. Very happy with my purchase.
    Pros:
    Sound quality, price, iPod/iPhone control.
    Cons:
Occasionally while searching for a new album the unit will display "updating" which in turn makes me have to start the search all over. Slight annoyance, still a great piece of equipment.

    Nice head end

Easy to install into a 2004 (New Body) F-150. Mating the wiring harness tails took the longest. Insertion was less than a half hour. Unit sounds great as is by just feeding the audio to the stock speakers (at least for now). Crutchfield service is excellent!
    Pros:
Simple to install. Sound quality very good. All the pieces supplied by Crutchfield were perfect. Display visibility is good, digital FM sounds solid. Interface to my iPhone 4S through Bluetooth also sounds great.
    Cons:
No clock while the unit is on. Instructions take some time to wade through.

    This Is The One Folks

I am a professional musician and composer. Sound is my job, and my passion. I replaced an old Alpine unit that was starting feel its age, and the Alpine CDE-HD148BT is just what I wanted. The HD radio is Outstanding- really like listening to a CD. And the CD player is great, too- holds onto the sound even on really bumpy roads. Easy BlueTooth linkup with my phone. I'm getting another Alpine CDE-HD148BT for my wife's car. Crutchfield Customer Service ROCKS...
    Pros:
    All of the features.
    Cons:
I wish the Green color choice for the display was slightly more Blue/Green- Oh Well...

    Quality HU

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

A replacement HU for a Jeep JK Unlimited. Installs easily with the enclosed Crutchfield documents Direct device interface controls make operation simple. HD radio is definitely a plus. Alpine sound quality is exceptional as expected. Take some time to read the owners manual, as there are many features and settings which will assist in the ability to customize sound parameters for each individual vehicle application. Overall a great value, combine this with Crutchfields customer support, and you will not be disappointed.
    Pros:
sound quality, easy install and set up. Multiple interface applications.
    Cons:
BT sound quality on iPhone could be better.

    I Think It's An Ugrade

Written By WhoME, Los Angeles, CA on Saturday, February 01, 2014
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I purchased this radio thinking it was an upgrade. I was looking for HD Radio features, this one has it and as a bonus Pandora and Bluetooth. HD Radio is great, however the text display should list artist and then song, this displays station and artist, click view button and song and genre. Now BT, maybe I have a bad unit but I don't like it. BT connected first time and went to Pandora on my HTC One and it played thru car speakers, now, I'm using the BT source on the HU. Stopped working after I turned off HU and on again, should connect automatically but didn't. Had to force connect, didn't work, turn off/on BT on both devices, didn't work. Delete device from HU and phone and pair again, just to work for couple minutes and lose sound again, that was BT Mode on HU. The HU has Pandora as a source and that didn't work at all. I'm thinking its my HTC One, tried my wife's iPhone 5 and same scenario, worked initial time but after power cycle HU, same problem. USB function, that is ok if you use flash drive, but HTC One charges battery and plays locally stored files. iPhone charges also and plays locally stored songs but no Pandora control on either cell phones. Hands-Free is cool when BT is working, was able to hide microphone behind dash for a clean look. So I don't know if the HU is defective, marketing lies or bad cell phones.
    Pros:
HD Radio sounds great, 6 preouts, came with microphone and USB ext . Lights are changeable
    Cons:
Bluetooth. No Pandora control thru USB, as advertised. HD Radio text.

    Great headunit

Written By LeeD, Houston, TX on Friday, January 31, 2014
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This unit really improved the sound quality of our Sorrento. The basic functions of the unit are easy to use and I love the old time radio station push buttons. On the head unit in my truck I hate having to scroll up and down to change stations. We're still learning about all of the other features.
    Pros:
Easy to set up for basic use.
    Cons:
A DVD for the manual... really??? It's kind of a pain to have to go in the house to read the manual and then back out to the car to set a function.

    Great Stereo!

This unit is a great value in terms of bluetooth functionality for media streaming from your phone, handsfree calling using the microphone and overall stereo audio quality. Would definitely recommend.
    Pros:
Great sound. Excellent call quality wtih the bluetooth handsfree calling feature. People I'm on the phone with often ask me if I'm at home while I'm talking going down the highway.
    Cons:
It's a small nit, but the options on displaying the clock are not greatest. For example your only option for the clock is to have a small display at the bottom of the display. The manual is not that good.

    For My Wife

I bought this stereo for my wife. Works great. She praised it the first couple of days while figuring out how to use it. Got a couple of questions from her that I helped her out on. But most important of all, she is no longer complaining about the Jensen that was in the vehicle when we bought it.
    Pros:
Makes my wife happy. No more complaining.
    Cons:
I had to look some stuff up in the manual, She was not going to do it.

We are very happy with the Alpine quality, the sound is great. However I purchased this for my dad to use with his cell phone to comply with the new cell phone laws. The connection will not work, his phone connected 2 times and will not connect again & so far no solution. Very excellent customer service as always at Crutchfield!
    Pros:
Excellent sound quality Nice looking Easy to install

Will not work with dads Bluetooth cell phone

    Great Audio, Installation Instructions Lacking

Written By David M, Cheraw, SC on Tuesday, January 14, 2014
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I am very impressed with the Alpine 148-BT head unit. I had an Alpine head unit in my previous vehicle, however it was 10 years old so I did not remove it when I sold it. In the new truck (new to me), one of the first things I missed was listening to my iPod in the car.

I really enjoy the line in controls for the iPod that lets me choose whether to control the iPod with the head unit or via the iPod. With the digital line in the sound quality is excellent. I am really amazed at the better sound I am able to get out of the stock speakers.

One of the main reasons I purchased this particular unit is for the Bluetooth connectivity and the ability to receive SiriusXM radio (with an additional part SXV200 v1)). The hands-free integration with my old iPhone 4 is flawless and have been told the sound quality is better than using the phone by itself.

In the near future I plan to replace the factory speakers with a set of Alpine SPR-68's and also install Dynamat sound deadening to my doors. I would also like to add the SiriusXM connection.

I gave four stars for value because Crutchfield charges more for the product, however I have purchased from Crutchfield before and appreciated the "extras" to help with installation. While I received all of the necessary parts, the installation instructions were not as thorough as before and I had to watch a few YouTube videos (not from Crutchfield) to help with the install.

I highly recommend this head unit I installed in my 2000 Ford F-150 XLT
    Pros:
Great sound. Flexible options (connectivity and colors). Easy to navigate.
    Cons:
Installation instructions/guides were not as thorough as I have received from Crutchfield in the past.

Great head sounds very good very powerful. The 18w this head puts out are big strong watts. The display is a bit plain but the ability to change the color to match your gauge display is nice. Having the song info from hd stations is a great plus. The controls are not that hard to use but could be a little more intuitive. Over all this has been a very nice upgrade to my car and would recommend this product to friends and family.

sounds awesome: front, rear and sub rca jacks

    Awesome Head Unit

Written By Gerard B, Middletown NJ on Friday, December 13, 2013

Awesome head unit, but a little too complex. After having in my car for nearly three weeks, i'm still trying to figure out some of the features. Tried out the Alpine Tune it app and seems to make a difference. Will be playing with it some more.
    Pros:
Build and sound quality. Value. and a fantastic retailer in Crutchfield.
    Cons:
The illumination dimmer feature doesn't work as i expected. only dims the unit marginally and is not further dimmed by the dash lights dimmer.

    Excellent Receiver

I never write reviews. But after talking with advisor Jackson at Crutchfield about a replacement for my kenworth semi truck, I had to write a review about this receiver. Although I was leaning toward Kenwood, Advisor recommended the Alpine cde hd148bt. This is the most awesome receiver I have ever purchased. After installing it with factory speakers, it sounded like I replaced the speakers also. Great receiver. You will not regret purchasing this radio. Oh I almost forgot to mention this. In the past I made alot of my purchases from another retailer and you may not find the cheapest price at Crutchfield, but you will not find better customer service, or help when you are not sure which product is best for you. And the advice you will get from Crutchfield is advice you will not receive anywhere else.
    Pros:
Tune it app, Sound, Easy to use. And the display is easy to read during the day unlike some other brands
    Cons:
    nothing

    Great Replacement Unit

Written By Matt, Bixby OK on Wednesday, November 27, 2013
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This head unit replaces an older ALPINE I installed 14 years ago and it was pretty much PLUG N PLAY! The Bluetooth is a great add-on to have hands free in my truck as is the support for USB audio, just add your favorite songs to a thumb drive and put it on MIX or play the music in the folder you select! The unit has a bright screen and easy to see, but I think they could do a better job of the menu system on the unit! I also added the ALPINE remote control and it too was easy to use, but wish it was smaller like the one with the UNIT it replaces. Overall a great CD RECEIVER.
    Pros:
Easy to see and great sound!
    Cons:
    Setup menu could be better!

    Apline CDE-HD148BT

Versatile equalization combined with quality Alpine sound and the Tuneit App allowed me to successfully fine tune the sound in my RAV4 with only factory speakers. HD radio reception is spotty in my area but sounds great when available. This is a reasonably priced package that meets most of my needs. Wish same features were available in a DVD receiver.....
    Pros:
Great sound and versatile equalization. Bluetooth works well. HD radio sounds good.
    Cons:
HD radio reception spotty. Wish same features (Tuneit/Equalization) were available in a DVD/GPS package.

I purchased this head unit to replace the factory bose unit in my 2004 Tahoe. Let me tell you. It doesn't sound like I replaced just the deck, It sounds like I replaced the entire system. What alpine has done to ingrate the new Technology to easily adapt into your already existing system and have this much impact is absolutely amazing! I would buy it again in a heartbeat!
    Pros:
Blue tooth, IPhone app to run the EQ, massive expandability, didn't even need to add a separate sub, this deck rocks the factory one just fine.
    Cons:
    Do not have any!
