Built-in HD Radio™ with iTunes® tagging

HD Radio

Alpine's HD Radio tuner lets you tune in digital AM/FM broadcasts, significantly pumping up the sound quality. Participating FM stations sound about as good as a CD, while AM stations offer enhanced reception similar to traditional FM. Plus, when you connect your iPod® and tune into an HD Radio station, you can "tag" songs you like for later purchase from the iTunes® store.

Pandora® in your car

Your smartphone and the free Pandora app are the key to enjoying the variety of musical options available on Pandora. Android and BlackBerry® users get full control through the Bluetooth connection, while iPhone lovers just plug in through the USB port. You can change stations, skip tracks, and rate songs just like you do online.

A great upgrade to an outdated factory unit. Many customization features, but be prepared to do some searching through multiple levels to reach your desired control. For the money, this is a power packed unit.

Pros: More features than more expensive units.

Cons: Not the best bass response, but capable of a sub-woofer.

    Replaced a cde147bt

Great sound quality, interface, features. This unit replaced a cde147bt that I was very happy with until it's Bluetooth lost its mind in its third year of ownership. That was entirely too soon for such an expensive piece of gear and based on that I looked far and wide beyond alpine to see if there were any other HU's that would meet my criteria.

The SQ of the 149 is superb. I've been a professional musician, music teacher, audio designer, sound engineer, and hobbyist. The rest of the vehicle uses a simple jbl amp and four matching jbl speakers, so there is no funny business downstream. Sound quality and final tuning is important for me. The 149 sounds better than the 147, and I don't know why this would be. However, with pink noise fed thru the 147, it had a major dip around 600 hz and uncontrollable sizzle at16k and above. It took some eq to tame that. The 149 is flatter in its response curve without those artifacts.

The illumination has better dimming features than the 147 did. I want the HU to blend in the dash, not advertise and distract. Three dimming levels once he dash is lit. Better.

A real knob for volume is had with the 149, for better eyes off use.

As with the 147, Bluetooth clarity is very understandable for both ends of the line, and Bluetooth music and podcast streaming works as it should. I hope the 149 stays that way.

The three line display is excellent. No visibility issues. Note, the dot matrix display is always white on blue regardless of buttons

Pros: SQ, memory preset buttons, excellent parametric EQ, conservative display, volume knob, working Bluetooth.

Cons: Faceplate folds but is not removable. Previous alpine unit in same series failed way too early.

I picked this up for my wife's VW New Beetle. It had an eight year old Alpine stereo (also from Crutchfield) that I fitted. The old stereo was still working but she wanted bluetooth music streaming and the ability to take calls hands free.

This time I also replaced the speakers in the front (for $70 kickers).

I upgraded the speakers first, a definite improvement even with the old stereo and a noticeable further upgrade with the new one.

All the new features are fairly intuitive and easy to use.

    Things to note:

The microphone comes in the case for keeping the display in (should you remove it). That confused me for a minute because I had put that to one side because I don't intend to remove the front.

In the Beetle (and I suspect most other cars) this can only be installed with the "B" Metra faceplate that uses the plastic trim ring which came with the stereo. I think the other trim looks nicer but the way the faceplate pivots down it catches on the bigger "A" surround and then you can't get it open enough to put a CD in.

.... oh, and thanks to Bryce for the quick chat help when I couldn't find the microphone! Crutchfield support is great.

Installing this has given me the installation bug again so I think I am going to upgrade the stereo in my Pilot to get the same features.

    A Teeny Disappointment

Written By Chase L, La Crosse, Wisconsin on Wednesday, April 29, 2015

Value - 2 Stars Installation was easy. The wiring was straightforward. Everything seemed to be reasonably solid for an aftermarket headunit. There are number of functionalities that true audiophiles would appreciate. Bad things are the CD player did not take CD's and the subwoofer preouts did not output any voltage whatsoever. I called Crutchfield the same day I found these defects (Monday, April 27) and the tech support guy said he would have new unit at my doorstep today (Wednesday, April 29), but it will not be delivered until Friday, May 1 due to them choosing to ship it via UPS 3 Day Select. Shame on you, Crutchfield. Seriously, what an inconvenience..

SQ - 4 Stars Everything except the bass functionalities are super good! Midrange and high frequencies sound great, but the bass is a little lacking (bass boost!!!). I gave this four stars only because I could hear some noticeable improvements in sound quality over the stock headunit.

Ease of Use - 5 Stars This unit was a little difficult and confusing to use at first, but I learned it all within 30 minutes or so. Buttons and dial on the faceplate are very responsive - almost no lag at all.

Coolness Factor - 4 Stars I like the screen used in this unit. Very clear, easy to read, and has some neat animations. Though, I must mention it again, it would be nice to have bass boosting options. That would've been cool.

Build Quality - 3 Stars The CD player and subwoofer preouts were DOA. Wah wah wah waaaaahhhhhhhh.

Pros: Sounds great. HD Radio function is crystal clear. Bluetooth hands-free calling is freaking awesome! The mic works great.

Cons: No bass boost options, which sucks. Build quality is just okay. CD player and subwoofer preouts were DOA.

Crutchfield response on Wednesday, May 06, 2015 We're sorry about the miscommunication regarding the delivery time of the replacement stereo. That was a mix up on our part and our Customer Service team reached out to the customer to make things right.

I bought this unit to upgrade from my aging CDE-9886. While it still has the same high quality sound with more options, its still not perfect. My biggest gripe is with TuneIt. The TuneIt app is very finicky. The phone will be connected via bluetooth and TuneIt won't see the a connection. Then you have to play a, which one should I turn off and back on until I find the correct combination. Usually you have to kill the TuneIt app on the phone before it will connect. Half the time when I'm parked the TuneIT app thinks I'm driving and won't allow for level changes. I love the fact that you can do time alignment, however there needs to be an easier way to get a baseline. The old Imprint system at least took the guess work out of setting the time alignment. The parametric eq also should have a way to start with a baseline. Come On Alpine, you could have used the built in smartphone mic in conjunction with TuneIt to at least get a basic acoustics measurement. For the novice and for the enthusiast as well, time alignment can be tricky if you have strange speaker position. Sharing tuning is great, if you could easily find one for your specific model of vehicle. Alpine should allow speaker type and layout as a basic start profile. They also did not include bass management on this model, which is disappointing since the lower models have it. The bluetooth functionality is a winner here, but I still think they could have done more with this unit.

Pros: Customization color options for buttons TuneIT USB allows for different mobile devices High quality sound Plenty of power output Large display

Cons: Screen can not be changed as far as color or contrast. Its always bright white, with a washed out background. If the buttons can be changed t he screen should allow color changing as well. No RDS for normal broadcast radio. HD has it but not standard signals. TuneIT should allow the use of the Imprint mic, or cell phone mic to setup time correction for those that don't understand the calculations. Satellite requires external module. Ipod control does not include any of the Ipod Video unit

The reason I only use Alpine headunits

This is my 3rd Alpine headunit over the last decade and a half and by far the best. I have it powering mtx thunder35s in the front and 4" focal access in the back, with a jl 12w3v3 2ohm in a ported SO box w/ an alpine mrv-m500amp. All together, absolutly amazing sound quality for an audiophile on a budget.

pink floyd, jimi, tool, odd future. absolutly amazing.

Ill eventually add 6.5" and 6x9" access focals and power them off a 4ch alpine or RF for more mids/low mids/lows. But for now im incredibly happy.

Highly reccomend using the usb over bluetooth if you want the most out of your system. bluetooth sounds great and is crystal clear but its still a wireless connection and when you compare them right after the other you can tell. Nothing against alpine, all bluetooth works this way, just simple science.

    Pros: everything

    Cons: nothing

I sold a very good Kenwood KDC-x998 and replaced it with this one. The Kenwood does everything the Alpine does, but not as easily. Nearing 60, my eyes don't work as well as they used to. The display is excellent. In two-line mode showing artist and song/station and program the crisp block letters are very legible.

Bluetooth pairs easily with my Galaxy S5. Pandora launches reliably, though the connection could be quicker. iPod integration is excellent. Phonebook search and assigning of presets is easy to navigate and intuitive. Sound quality of phone calls is excellent and callers tell me I sound good.

Installation using the supplied Metra harness was very simple in my car.

Pros: Easy to install Sounds great Bluetooth works well HD Radio sounds great

Cons: Color customization only applies to buttons and knob - The display is fixed in color as shown in the pictures - dark blue background with white/silver text.

Replaced an older custom system with this new head unit. The functionality is intuitive. The quality seems to be very nice. The sound quality is fantastic...crisp and clean. I'm happy with all the extended functionality. Even the Bluetooth works very well with my Windows Phone 8.1. Calls are easy, uploads the phonebook, plays streaming music from my phone...and no wires needed!

Pros: Sound quality, ease of setup and use, tons of features

    Cons: none that I've found

Bought it for the iPhone features and the Alpine quality sound. Got it to replace a CDE-9885, mainly for the Pandora and BT feature. Ordering and shipping was easy as are all the Crutchfield orders. However, after installing it and trying it out, the skip forward/search button did not work all the time. It'd work sometimes, and other times you'd have to hit it several times for it to work. The quality of the face plate was also also poor, so had no interest in keeping it. Didn't spend a lot of time working on the audio settings, but just with adjusting base/treble, and even with my amp and sub, and with the cheap face plate, I felt like I was stepping down in quality from my 9885. Called Crutchfield and the return process was very easy. Will need to go back to do more research for another HU.

Pros: BT set up was fast. Overall Crutchfield service.

    Cons: Quality of face plate.

Didn't know what to expect with some of the mixed reviews here. I'm really glad I took a shot on this. I bought 2 pairs of Kicker CS series speakers. The unit really provides some power for the speakers. Granted I've only had it for about a week or so. Easy to use Bluetooth streaming, clear Bluetooth calling, and great with sub connection. I'm an iPhone user, so that's been my Bluetooth/usb experience. The only real downside is the faceplate, it's nothing too great to look at, but it does display all the iPod/Bluetooth streaming/phone call info on it.

Pros: Easy to use, Bluetooth streaming/calling

    Cons: Lackluster faceplate

Instructions how to connect and use are terrible. No instructions on how to remove face. I connected and played and was very disappointed. Absolutely no Base. The unit couldn't kick my subwoofer. I see reviews here about how great there unit sounds, but no specifics. When somebody says it "Sounds Great." Thats relative. I just wasted two hours. Now I have to install my old unit.

I have had this for about a year and am still happy with it. Bluetooth works great, the HD radio reception is superb on both AM and FM, the SiriusXM tuner add-on works well, and unlike my old head unit, I can actually read the clock (when it is set to display it). Sound quality is amazing, once you get it set right ... that takes a while (when I first installed it and tested it, I HATED the sound; I found a suggested setting for the parametric EQ and it just opened up!). Subwoofer control is very versatile as well.

I use this (right now) with my iPod 5s, and have had no complaints.

No external amps (other than an amplified Bazooka Tube) and the sound is just impressive. Would be nice if the clock was bigger when it displayed other information. Would also be nice if the RDS info showed three lines instead of two so that you could read the song title and artist at the same time.

Pros: Excellent sound, great reception, features work nicely

    Cons: None really.

I got the Alpine 149BT last week as a gift (it was on my wish list). Let me start off saying that if you really care about the sound quality of your music, you just can't beat Alpine. I don't know how they do it, but Alpine units just sound amazing. Having said that, that seems to be Alpine's only strength. I got the 149BT to replace an older Alpine head unit that was almost exactly the same but without BlueTooth and HD radio. I really enjoyed that radio except the CD player was not so great (sound-wise excellent, mechanically not-so-much), nor the iPod playing capability (sound quality excellent but plays out of order - sometimes/often), nor the fact that every add-on (HD radio, BT) cost almost as much os the radio itself. This seems to be a recurring theme with the new 149BT. It sounds fantastic. But every time I turn it on I feel insulted that Alpine does not think I know if I'm listening to radio, iPod, or USB because there is a huge 1" by 1" animated radio antenna on the left side of the display when it is on radio or huge music clef symbol, or huge iPod. Or if I have the display set for time, they must think that I might be confused as to which planet I'm on because there is a huge 1" x 1" spinning globe of the Earth on the left. Did I mention that this is on the display? And that it is animated? In a car -- where you should not be watching your radio? That's right, you lose the entire left one inch of the display, top to bottom, that could be used to show additional in

    Pros: Sound Quality - Amazing

Cons: Wasted display space that could have been used for more and/or important info

I mostly like it, but I do have a couple of complaints...mostly with the USB. 1. If the car is turned off with the USB drive in the MIX all mode the USB will more than likely not start right away, but will say searching for 5 minutes or more. There are 2 ways to get it out of this mode the first is to reset the radio which loses all the presets the other is to remove the drive, put another drive in and wait for it to start to play and then remove that drive and put the first one back it.

    2. in Mix all mode for the first 10 minutes the unit will not skip a song. 3.You cannot do an y playlists in USB mode...none zip nada. You cannot even tell it to play a particular Genre. The only option you have for searching is by folder.

Pros: The radio reception, especially AM, is almost as good as the factory radio. The EQ is awesome and the display is good in most lighting conditions. This replaced a near top of the line Kenwood stereo and while the Kenwood sounded ok this sounds so much better...as 1 person who has owned both Kenwood and Alpine said, the Kenwood sounded like somebody put a blanket over the speakers.

Cons: As stated before the USB function is lame

Pros: I love that I can use my steering wheel controls, with adapter, and i'm impressed with the speakerphone quality.

Cons: The USB and AUX inputs are only in the rear of the radio so I had to get additional cables and mount them in the dash, which was a huge pain, but now that they are in, they are very handy.

I absolutely love my new receiver. I got to choose it for Fathers Day and was so excited to install it. The basic functions are very easy to use and easy to learn. Once it is all set up it is fun to use. It also has advanced functions which allow a wide range of tuning options so that you can customize your sound to your liking. The Bluetooth feature is great also. The phone quality is fantastic and it automatically connects once I turn on my car. I personally like that all the external connections are hidden behind the deck leaving the front panel clean and clutter free. I am also impressed with the digital radio feature. All in all this Alpine is worth the investment!

It was everything to expect out of an Alpine deck except the fact that the audio was weak in the bass. I went through two radios, four different brands of interconnect, three amps, and four subs before I threw in the towel and bought a pioneer after I talked a friend into letting me hook up my Hifonics amp and RE Audio sub to his car and we were both gifted with earthquake making bass from a single 10" sub. My old trusty CDA-7876 didn't have this issue.

I'm so disappointed. What happened to you Alpine, you use to be cool?

Pros: Everything worked out of the box and on install. It is easy to use and it did look pretty cool, but not enough for 3 stars.

Cons: No bass. Not even with the crossovers and internal processors turned off. No bass to the full range speakers and no bass to the subwoofer output where it should be.

    Great but..................

Sound quality is substantially better than most HU I've heard. I'm going to install an amp and subwoofer next, and this unit should handle it with no problem. Switching between stations is very good and easy. Display does not wash out in the sunlight, which is essential in a convertible. Overall, a pretty good unit. However, don't buy it if you tend to want to remove the faceplate often. And if you do, I would strongly recommend an extended warranty because it will only be a short matter of time before you break the attachment points from normal use. Not having a paper manual that you can take out to the car with you to figure out it many features is a huge pain! And a great way for them to save money.

Pros: Sound quality is certainly above average.

Cons: My only complaint with this unit is the detachable faceplate. Terrible! I mean really bad, and was the only reason I actually considered sending it back! The guy that designed this faceplate should be fired, and I know Alpine can do better than this. The attachment points appear very delicate, and you find yourself tinkering with it to get it on and off. On short trips I find myself just going without the radio at all rather than messing with it to put it on. That's how bad it is.

    Overall it's a good unit.
