Our take on the Alpine CDE-HD149BT

by Ken Nail
Alpine

Why replace your factory radio?

Two good reasons - sound quality and cool features. A new car stereo offers power that's superior to most factory radios, along with more sophisticated tone controls. And most car stereos offer built-in or optional features that add safety and fun to life in your car, including inputs for your iPod or MP3 player, Bluetooth connectivity for hands-free cell phone calls, satellite radio or HD Radio reception, and connections for building an audio system in your car.

Alpine Authorized Online Dealer

Loaded with features and ready to roll

If you're in the hunt for a do-it-all car stereo, look no further than Alpine's CDE-HD149BT CD receiver. It packs a serious sonic punch and you'll also get features like an HD Radio® tuner, built-in Bluetooth®, and Pandora® Internet radio control, too. Alpine's user-friendly controls round out the package, with an innovative new smartphone-based app for tuning your system.

Sound control, just a swipe away

Alpine puts pro-level audio tuning in the palm of your hand with TuneIt™, an award-winning smartphone app designed exclusively for select Alpine receivers. Download the free app onto your iPhone® or Android™ smartphone, and you can create a user profile with information specific to you, your vehicle, and your Alpine system. Then it's a simple matter to import sound settings for your car from 3,000 options in Alpine's database, or use the app to adjust the receiver's time correction feature, 9-band parametric equalizer, frequency filters, and Media Xpander yourself. Save up to 100 different sound settings — whatever you want to match your music or taste. TuneIt even lets you create a profile on Facebook so you can share settings with other users.

Bluetooth® for hands-free calling and audio streaming

If you don't have Bluetooth in your car, you'll love the capabilities the CDE-HD149BT offers. No more fumbling for your phone when you get a call — pair your Bluetooth equipped phone with the receiver and you'll talk hands-free when you get a call. And since the receiver imports your phonebook, outgoing calls are easy to place too. If you store music or stream audio programming on your smartphone, you'll be able to listen over your car's audio system without any wires — simply select Bluetooth Audio as your source and tap into all the content you enjoy.

Built-in HD Radio™ with iTunes® tagging

Alpine's HD Radio tuner lets you tune in digital AM/FM broadcasts, significantly pumping up the sound quality. Participating FM stations sound about as good as a CD, while AM stations offer enhanced reception similar to traditional FM. Plus, when you connect your iPod® and tune into an HD Radio station, you can "tag" songs you like for later purchase from the iTunes® store.

Pandora® in your car

Your smartphone and the free Pandora app are the key to enjoying the variety of musical options available on Pandora. Android and BlackBerry® users get full control through the Bluetooth connection, while iPhone lovers just plug in through the USB port. You can change stations, skip tracks, and rate songs just like you do online.

Want to keep your steering wheel controls?

In most vehicles, you can use an adapter (not included) to connect your vehicle's steering wheel controls to this Alpine stereo. Connect a few wires, then program the adapter for your particular car and the receiver, and you'll retain the convenience of your steering wheel controls. Check the "Accessories" tab for compatible adapters.

Bluetooth note: Use of this receiver's Bluetooth features will depend upon your phone's Bluetooth capabilities. Learn more in our article explaining Bluetooth profiles.

iPod note: If you're going to use your iPod with this receiver, be sure to check "Details" for specific iPod model compatibility with this receiver or its optional iPod adapter.

HD Radio: With the built-in HD Radio tuner, you can receive digital AM/FM broadcasts from local stations where available. HD Radio lets you listen to the radio with the same fidelity as your digital music. HD Radio features high quality audio, FM multi-casting, and data services. With HD Radio, your FM stations offer near CD-quality sound, AM stations provide FM-like sound, and there is crystal-clear reception with no audio distortion. Best of all, HD Radio is 100% subscription free.

    • Station Text: AM/FM digital stations can offer text and data such as artist names and song titles. The built-in HD Radio tuner displays song title, artist and station information on the display of the Alpine CDE-HD149BT.
    • Multicasting: Multicasting is the ability to broadcast multiple program streams over a single AM/FM frequency. this increases the amount and diversity of content choices. A maximum of eight multicast station channels (HD1-HD8) can be selected on this unit.
    • Preset Tuning: The built-in tuner provides 12 FM and 6 AM preset stations. Stations can be preset manually or automatically. Sub-program services of multicast stations are not included in the automatic memory search.
    • Search Functions: The Alpine CDE-HD149BT offers various search functions to help you find the analog or digital AM/FM stations you are looking for. You can search for only digital AM/FM stations (Digital mode), or both analog & digital AM/FM stations (Hybrid mode). Local seek tuning lets you tune in only those radio stations with sufficiently strong signals for good reception. Distance seek tuning allows both strong and weak stations to be tuned. You can even search for a radio station by its frequency, using the head unit's rotary encoder.
    • Listening Modes: The head unit provides four reception methods in order to receive Digital & Analog AM/FM signals according to your own preference and signal strength. Choose from Hybrid (receives both digital and analog stations; if the digital signal is weak, this mode will switch to receive the analog radio signal automatically), Digital (receives only digital radio signals even when the digital signal is weak), Digital MC (receives the digital radio signal while listening to a sub-program service of a multicast station), or Analog (only receives the analog radio signal, even when the digital signal is strong).
    • Live Mode: While receiving a live AM/FM broadcast, you can select an optimized receiving method according to your own preference and the signal strength. Choose from Analog (while receiving a live broadcast this unit will only receive the analog radio signal even when the digital signal can be received), Digital (while receiving a live broadcast this unit will keep receiving the digital radio signal even when the digital signal is week), or Listen (while receiving a live broadcast this unit will use one of the Listening Modes - Hybrid/Digital/Digital MC/Analog).
    • FM Tone Quality: You can set your preferred tonal quality, when listening to FM analog radio stations. You can choose between HiFi (high-quality sound), Normal (standard setting), or Stable (noise control).
    • iTunes Tagging: It is possible to save the song's information (tag) from and HD Radio broadcasting station to your USB-direct connected iPod/iPhone. The songs will show up in a playlist called "Tagged" in iTunes the next time you sync your iPod/iPhone. Then you can directly buy the songs you want from the iTunes Music Store. You can "tag" up to 50 songs. Your iPod/iPhone must have at least 50MB of free space to "tag" and transfer songs. iTunes 7.4 or later is required to purchase "tagged" songs.
Note: More than 2,000 radio stations are broadcasting their primary signals in digital HD Radio technology, as a free service. Go to www.hdradio.com to check for HD Radio stations in your area.

Your Android smartphone must support A2DP/AVRCP/SPP Bluetooth profiles and be paired with the Alpine receiver. Your iPhone or Android smartphone will also need an active Data Plan account with connection to the Internet via 3G, EDGE, or WiFi. • Station List: You can select Pandora stations from your Station List by date or alphabetically (A-Z).

    • Thumbs Up/Down: You can give songs a thumbs up or thumbs down to help Pandora personalize stations to suit your preferences.

Hands-Free Communication: The head unit supports Bluetooth hands-free communication for your Bluetooth enabled mobile phone (including iPhone & Android). The controls of the CDE-HD149BT can be used to dial a number, answer an in-coming call, or end a call. • Preset Dialing: You can assign phone numbers that you dial frequently to presets (1-6) for quick recall. You can assign up to six frequently called phone numbers. A total of 18 phone numbers can be stored in the preset memory (6 numbers for each mobile phone paired).
      • Call History: The previously dialed, received, or missed numbers (20 each) can be retrieved and dialed from memory.
Note: During a conversation, you can initiate a transfer of audio between your mobile phone and your car's speakers.

External Microphone with Noise Cancellation: The included external microphone (with visor-clip) allows you to speak to the other party on the telephone call hands-free, while the other party's voice is played through your car stereo speakers. The external microphone is tuned and engineered to reduce noise interference and feedback. This allows optimal placement in your car, for the best possible sound quality. You can adjust the microphone's volume level; and even mute the microphone, so your voice will not be heard by the caller. The external microphone measures 0.5625" (diameter) x 1.625" (deep); and features an attached 13' cable terminated by a right-angle male 3.5mm connector.

Audio Streaming (w/ Advanced Music Navigation): The Alpine CDE-HD149BT can stream music from your Bluetooth A2DP/AVRCP mobile device (such as your iPhone or Android smartphone). Not only can it control & stream your music through Bluetooth, it can process your music using its built-in DSP Sound Expansion to ensure you get the best sound. In addition to basic playback functions (Play/Pause, FF/RW, Skip, Random/Repeat), the CDE-HD149BT provides a Search List of your stored music by Playlist, Artist, Album, Song, etc.. (AVRCP 1.4 phones only). The head unit will also display your stored music's song information; such as Artist name & Song/Album title. The CDE-HD149BT even supports audio streaming of music apps on your Bluetooth-enabled smartphone with song/artist information and limited control (continue to use your Bluetooth enabled smartphone to control advanced music app navigation).

Note: When an incoming call or outgoing call is in progress from your Bluetooth enabled mobile phone, audio streaming will be paused so you can take your call. Once the call is finished, your streaming music will resume.

Siri Digital Assistant Control: When paired and connected with an iPhone 4S or 5/5C/5S via Bluetooth (not USB), the Alpine CDE-HD149BT has the ability to access Siri through its front-panel controls and external microphone. Simply press-and-hold down on the head unit's "VOICE CTRL" button to engage Siri and use the included microphone to communicate with Siri. Siri's voice will be heard through your vehicle's speakers. All Siri functions including hands-free calling, music search, setting reminders, text-messaging, audible navigation, and more can be done through the CDE-HD149BT and its microphone. The head unit's display will only indicate hands-free calling and Bluetooth audio information (all other functions of Siri are only audible through the Alpine CDE-HD149BT; visual data will still need to be viewed from your iPhone device).

Note: You can ask Siri to get directions to a destination and the turn-by-turn instructions will heard through your vehicle's speakers, while the on-screen map still displays on your iPhone 4S/5/5C/5S. The head unit's audio is attenuated while Siri provides audible directions.

CEA-2006 Compliant: The specifications given by Alpine for the built-in amplifier comply with the CEA-2006 mobile amplifier power testing and measurement standards from the CEA (Consumer Electronics Association). All manufacturers who comply with the standard can display the CEA-2006 logo on their product.

    • CEA-2006 Power Rating: 18 watts x 4 channels (at 4 ohms, 20-20kHz, 1% THD)
    • Max Power Output: 50 watts x 4 channels
Note: Add the KTP-445A (500KTP445A, sold separately) Head Unit Power Pack to deliver 45 watts x 4-channel RMS of power. The KTP-445A is compact enough to install behind the Alpine CD receiver. It plugs in-line with the head unit's wiring harness, so you don't even need additional wires.

6ch/4V Preamp Outputs: The CDE-HD149BT has three sets of 4-Volt RCA pre-outs (Front/Rear/Sub) for connection of external amplifiers. The unit's front & rear preamp output can be faded, while the subwoofer preamp output is non-fading.

Note: When an external amplifier is connected sound quality can be improved by stopping the power supply of the built-in amplifier.

Subwoofer Control: When the non-fading subwoofer preamp output is activated, you can adjust the subwoofer's volume, low-pass filter, & phase.

    • Volume: There are two volume (system) modes for the unit's subwoofer output. System 1 (subwoofer level changes according to the main volume setting) or System 2 ( subwoofer level change is different from the main volume setting (0-15); even at low volume settings, the subwoofer is still audible.
    • Low Pass Filter: The unit's subwoofer output low-pass filter can be set to 20Hz, 25Hz, 31.5Hz, 40Hz, 50Hz, 63Hz, 80Hz, 100Hz, 125Hz, 160Hz, 200Hz, or Off (through). The slope of the low pass filter can be set to 6, 12, 18, or 24 dB/oct.

Note: The settings of the 9-Band EQ, Time Correction, and X-over can be stored in the preset memory (1-6).

Audio Enhancements: The CDE-HD149BT offers the following audio adjustments to enhance your in-car listening experience.

    • Media Xpander: Alpine's exclusive Media Xpander is engineered to bring out the musical details lost in compressed media, and it is adjustable per source to get the most out of your digital audio media. The Media Expander makes vocals or instruments sound distinct regardless of the music source. You can customize the Media Xpander to suit your personal taste by adjusting the level (0-8) for Bass, Mids, and Highs. The FM radio, CD, USB, iPod, Pandora, Bluetooth, and Aux will be able to reproduce the music more clearly even in vehicles with a lot of road noise.
    • Time Correction: This unit is able to delay the audio signal to the speakers closest to the listener with its built-in Time Correction feature. This effectively creates a perception of increased distance for those speakers. Time Correction allows the listener to be placed at an equal distance between the left and right speakers for optimum staging. You can adjust the distance (0-132.7") of each speaker and subwoofer to the listener.
    • Spatial: This feature allows you to change the soundstage of your music in the vehicle. You can select from three modes.
      • Front Wide: Creates the effect of widening the front sound field by delaying the sound of the front speakers.
      • Rear Wide: Creates the effect of making the front sound image clear and far by delaying the sound of the rear speakers.
      • Off: No effect is applied (default)
    • Source Volume Level: The output level of each source (Tuner, Disc, USB, iPod, Bluetooth, Pandora, Aux) is individually adjustable from -14 to + 14 dB.

TuneIt App: TuneIt is an easy-to-use sound-tuning app that also offers Facebook notifications. Download this free app onto your Apple iPhone 4/4S/5 (via iTunes) or Android smartphone (coming soon via Google Play) and create a user profile about your vehicle and sound system. Your iPhone must be connected to the CDE-HD149BT via the appropriate Alpine iPod connector cable (500KCU445I, sold separately) or the Dock-/Lightning-cable that came with your iPhone. Your Android smartphone must support A2DP/AVRCP/SPP Bluetooth profiles and be paired with the Alpine receiver. Your iPhone or Android smartphone will also need an active Data Plan account with connection to the Internet via 3G, EDGE, or WiFi.

    • Sound Tuning: The TuneIt app turns your iPhone or Android smartphone into a sound tuning interface for the CDE-HD149BT . Follow the simple TuneIt graphical instructions on your phone to adjust sound settings for your specific vehicle or choose from pre-made settings in the database. Settings that can be adjusted include Time Correction, Parametric EQ, Crossover, and Media Xpander. As you change settings on your smartphone, you will hear the results, so you can customize the sound to exactly how you want it. You can make and save up to 100 different sound settings in your account, which is helpful if you want various settings to use for specific types of music. After tuning your system, upload your settings to the Alpine Cloud Server to share them with other Alpine fans. You can also check out other user's settings and rate them. The more active you are, the higher your profile status progresses within the app.
    • Facebook Notifications: The TuneIt app also keeps you in touch with your Facebook friends. When you receive a notification, you will get a visual alert on the smartphone and the head unit, plus a sound alert through your car speakers. The visual notification includes the Facebook icon and the sender's name, with the profile picture shown on the phone. In order to receive Facebook notifications on the head unit, the TuneIt app must be the active app on your smartphone.
Note: Access to TuneIt will depend on the availability of a cellular and/or WiFi network for purposes of allowing your iPhone or smartphone to connect to the Internet. You will also need to turn on the GPS function of your phone.

Beep Guide: This function will give audible feedback with varying tones depending upon the button pressed. The volume of this feature can be set from 0-7.

    Display Features

Fold-Down Detachable Face: The Alpine CDE-HD149BT features a manual fold-down face-plate which is detachable to deter theft. A hard-plastic face-case is provided. An optional soft face case (142DFC1X, sold separately) can also be purchased for this unit. A face-fixing screw is supplied for making the face non-detachable, if desired. The fold-down face requires 1.875" of space to open.

2-Line LCD: This unit is equipped with a 2-Line white-backlit LCD, so you can easily view AM/FM stations, CD-Text, and ID-3/WMA/AAC tag information.

Text Display: Text information, such as the disc name and the track name, will be displayed if playing a CD text compatible disc. It is also possible to display the folder name, the file name, and the tag information, while playing a MP3/WMA/AAC disc or USB device. This unit can scroll the disc and track names recorded on CD-Text disc, as well as the text information of MP3/WMA/AAC files, folder names, and tags. There are two Text Scroll settings.

    • Auto: The CD text information, the information of folder and file names, and the tags are scrolled automatically.
    • Manual: The display is scrolled when a disc is loaded or when a track is changed.

    Clock/Calendar Display: The CDE-HD149BT provides a clock (12hr) & calendar (mm/dd/yy) display.

Variable Color Button Illumination: The head unit lets you choose between Blue, Green, Red, or Amber button illumination. The LCD text will remain white.

Auto Dimmer: This unit is equipped with an illumination lead (orange); when the unit's dimmer mode is set to Auto and the illumination lead is connected to your vehicle's headlight circuit, the display and button illumination will dim to a fixed, preset level whenever the headlights are turned on. If preferred, you may choose the Manual dimmer mode setting, so the display and button illumination is dim at all times.

Demo Mode: This unit has a demonstration feature for its display which can be turned On or Off in the menu.

    Remote Control

Steering Wheel Remote Compatibility: The head unit features an OEM steering wheel remote control input on the rear of the unit that lets you keep your vehicle's factory radio steering wheel remote controls when used with an optional steering wheel audio control adapter (sold separately). Please consult Crutchfield's Outfit My Car to see if your vehicle is compatible.

Optional Wireless Remote: The Alpine CDE-HD149BT is wireless remote control ready. Simply add on the Alpine RUE-4202 IR remote (500RUE4202, sold separately) to make it even easier to control the head unit's functions.

    Best Reciever Yet!

Written By Manny_O, Simi Valley, CA on Friday, June 27, 2014

I absolutely love my new receiver. I got to choose it for Fathers Day and was so excited to install it. The basic functions are very easy to use and easy to learn. Once it is all set up it is fun to use. It also has advanced functions which allow a wide range of tuning options so that you can customize your sound to your liking. The Bluetooth feature is great also. The phone quality is fantastic and it automatically connects once I turn on my car. I personally like that all the external connections are hidden behind the deck leaving the front panel clean and clutter free. I am also impressed with the digital radio feature. All in all this Alpine is worth the investment!

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

It was everything to expect out of an Alpine deck except the fact that the audio was weak in the bass. I went through two radios, four different brands of interconnect, three amps, and four subs before I threw in the towel and bought a pioneer after I talked a friend into letting me hook up my Hifonics amp and RE Audio sub to his car and we were both gifted with earthquake making bass from a single 10" sub. My old trusty CDA-7876 didn't have this issue.

I'm so disappointed. What happened to you Alpine, you use to be cool?
    Pros:
Everything worked out of the box and on install. It is easy to use and it did look pretty cool, but not enough for 3 stars.
    Cons:
No bass. Not even with the crossovers and internal processors turned off. No bass to the full range speakers and no bass to the subwoofer output where it should be.

    Great but..................

Written By Patrick, St. Mary's, Md. on Saturday, June 07, 2014
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Sound quality is substantially better than most HU I've heard. I'm going to install an amp and subwoofer next, and this unit should handle it with no problem. Switching between stations is very good and easy. Display does not wash out in the sunlight, which is essential in a convertible. Overall, a pretty good unit. However, don't buy it if you tend to want to remove the faceplate often. And if you do, I would strongly recommend an extended warranty because it will only be a short matter of time before you break the attachment points from normal use. Not having a paper manual that you can take out to the car with you to figure out it many features is a huge pain! And a great way for them to save money.
    Pros:
Sound quality is certainly above average.
    Cons:
My only complaint with this unit is the detachable faceplate. Terrible! I mean really bad, and was the only reason I actually considered sending it back! The guy that designed this faceplate should be fired, and I know Alpine can do better than this. The attachment points appear very delicate, and you find yourself tinkering with it to get it on and off. On short trips I find myself just going without the radio at all rather than messing with it to put it on. That's how bad it is.

    Overall it's a good unit.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Overall, I'm very happy with this receiver. It's not perfect, but I haven't found one yet that is. Here's just a few points to make, both positive and negative. I was looking for a receiver that played AAC (.m4a) files from iTunes, and this receiver does a great job. I've loaded up a USB flash drive with MP3 and AAC files, and ran the Alpine's USB cable to my glovebox. The songs load quick, and it plays all the files. I also wanted Bluetooth to pair my phone. I haven't had any problems with it so far. People that I call can hear me just fine. I've only played one CD so far, and it sounds great. The display looks nice, but you can not change the color of the LCD screen - it's White. You can however change the color of all the other buttons/knobs - but you only get a choice of 4 colors: Red, Blue, Green, and Amber - Which is basically going to match any car's interior light scheme. The only animation on the screen is a globe spinning around, and the scrolling text. No other fancy animations like many Pioneer units - which I'm fine with. I'm not exactly thrilled with the fold down face. For this pricepoint, this is Alpine's flagship single din, and it does not have a motorized face. You press the button, and it just flops open. You have to manually push it back in place. I've had cheaper receivers in the past that had motorized faces, so I'm not sure why they didn't go with that. Removing and attaching the face isn't very intuitive either. Includes case.
    Pros:
Sounds great! Meets all of my requirements. For the most part it's easy to use. Front face carry case is included.
    Cons:
No motorized face at this pricepoint. Removing and attaching the face isn't very intuitive.

looks ands sounds good but disappointed

Was so inspired by my previous alpine that I bought the new one, what a disappointment seems that this new model has less quality and it feels cheap was expecting far more. Cd player work twice and then stopped working just after 3 days of installing it, it drags the cd in and immediately ejects it... wont read just any cds, face plate is hard to take off and put on. Will be doing a warranty return in hopes of a refund. The goods is bluetooth works awesome it reconnects automatically once you start your vehicle, Great sound quality as well and nice display/ fonts..
    Pros:
    Sound quality/ bluetooth
    Cons:
    Cheap make

A good radio but pricey for the quality

Written By overline, norfolk, va on Wednesday, April 16, 2014
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Bottom line is it a really good radio but you can do just as well with a high end Kenwood or Pioneer for probably $50 less. The sound quality is excellent as you would expect from an Alpine. Installation was simple. The controls and menus are pretty easy to learn - mostly intuitive. The app for programming a lot of the functions is, however, worthless. Specifically you can't hear the changes you are making real time. The app will let you choose the frequency band you wish to to adjust, but unless you know how adjusting 40Hz to 60Hz sounds on your chosen music, you have to spend hours adjusting, closing the app, listening, opening, adjusting --- lather - rinse - repeating! Some of the controls feel a little cheap though - not what you expect from a system at this price. Also, I drive a Ram 2500 so my ride is a bit bumpy, which because of the way the buttons are positioned on the unit causes me to enter scan mode every time I am trying to change stations on a preset and hit the slightest bump... a big truck / people with stiff suspension specific problem to be sure. The unit organic EQ pre-select bands are pretty good -- standard POP, JAZZ, NEWS etc settings, so most users will likely never need the crAPP for the advanced EQ adjustments. Bluetooth is great for streaming and good for calls. HD reception is just OK - flips digital to analog a lot if the HD signal is less than optimal. Overall a good set.
    Pros:
sound quality, ease of installation, pre-programmed internal EQ settings, Bluetooth audio streaming quality, adjustable light color, intuitive menus
    Cons:
THAT FREEKIN APP!, cheap feel, Bluetooth call quality just OK, price point high for value, button placement

Great head unit for us single din guys. DVD and navigation are great if you have to entertain kids or drive all day long and need constant directions. But for us old less is better guys this is it. You can do everything but DVD and screen style navigation. But if you need navigation you can still Bluetooth or plug your smartphone in and still hear directions via the car system no problem.
    Pros:
    Has been AWESOME!!!
    Cons:
None for the unit, makes me now want to upgrade the rest of the system.

    Does not support Apple AAC

Written By Jim, Littleton, CO on Wednesday, April 02, 2014

Well, lets just say that if you want to use the USB drive option, be prepared to convert all your files to MP3. I do not know why they left out the Apple AAC decoder... Why this file type is not included is beyond me. Certainly wish I would have known that prior to purchase.

This unit makes it VERY difficult to browse through your music especially if you have a large library. The single DIN technology has not advanced much since about 2001, the last time I bought a single DIN unit. Get out the hacksaw and get a unit with a bigger display. If you plan to use USB/Thumb drives as your music source, make sure the unit you purchase plays the formats you are looking to play.
    Pros:
It fit in my RV hole! Price (you get what you pay for) USB drive connector is on a rear mounted cable and NOT sticking out of the front of the unit which eliminates breakage. Cable allows you to place USB device/thumb drive/memory stick in the glove box.
    Cons:
It will not play all file types via USB It is not a double-DIN Display is small, hard to read browsing thru library is difficult at best dated looks

My first Alpine, but will not be my last

Written By Jeremy, New Hampshire on Monday, March 03, 2014
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I wanted to upgrade the sound in my wife's 2006 Chevy Trailblazer, but given the overall complexitiy of the Bose system, I was hoping just replacing the deck would make a difference. I am pleased to say that I am nothing less than blown away with the improvement in sound quality. I never realized the stock speakers could sound so crisp, clean, and have so much punch. The factory amp is also driving the speakers much more than before, causing them to hit super hard. At first I was looking for a double din unit, but I ultimately did not want to spend $500 or $600 for a bigger screen, so I began looking at the single din units, and this Alpine had an overwhelming amount of settings, functions, and sound customizing features that I could not find in comparable units, and I feel these added values over the lesser priced units justify the added cost. The Media Xpander for example is fantastic, as is the Tune IT app, which at first I was skeptical of, but is quite useful. There are many, many options and possibilities with this unit that it can be daunting, but if you take your time to test things out, you will be most impressed with this unit. Very pleased with this purchase, the listening pleasure gained is worth the price alone.
    Pros:
Looks great, sounds great, allows for as detailed or as simple sound sculpting as you choose. I am having no issues playing any media or controlling the media either from an iPhone or a Windows phone, USB, or otherwise. It makes Bluethooth audio sound amazing, which I was very skeptical of. Media Xpander and TuneIt are very helpfull tools.
    Cons:
So many features it can be overwhelming, but with time and experimentation, virtually limitlss possibilities.

I have had bad luck with the first 2 decks ordered. Been having issues with no signal coming from preouts. Either than that, It's a great unit, clean crisp sound, lots of options to customize sound

    Great SQ, Poor Music Support

Written By Mark B, Nashville, TN on Monday, February 10, 2014
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

In the last year of driving my FR-S I've been spoiled by the ability to plug in my 8 year old iPod and use it's 20 gig drive for all of my music. The convenience was awesome. I hated the head unit though and the SQ from the factory unit was lacking as was it's support for additional amplification. I picked up this Alpine because I wanted something that had state of the art signal processing, high quality DAC, and high voltage preamp outputs. It has all of that and it sounds great. However those are about the only good things I have to say about it. It turns out this unit won't support my iPod correctly. It plays music, even Apple lossless, but you can't skip forward and back from the head unit. You can control the iPod directly either. After several calls to Crutchfield I was informed that my iPod is TOO OLD. Its odd to me that a basic factory non touchscreen headunit can support whatever you connect but this thing only supports newer stuff. I was told to use a thumb drive. I picked up a 32Gig unit but guess what, you can't search by artist or album on a thumb drive. If all of your music is in a flat directory this unit won't index it. That is crazy. Was this thing designed in 2005 before I bought my ipod? Every MP3 player I've ever used will index your music. Oh, and it wont play Apple Lossless from a thumb drive either. So much for my 600+ gig music library that I've maintained for years. If I want to keep this unit I'll have to spend weeks indexing my music by hand.
    Pros:
    Good SQ
    Cons:
Poor support for mass storage, older ipods, Cant disable display animation

Its great using it - easy to change sources, the USB for phone or flash drive, CD/DVD, XM radio, HD radio, Bluetooth WOW - intuitive enough to start using even if you don't read the manual, - installation of wires was easy - installation in dash was horrible - no directions specific to my vehicle supplied,

The salesman said to connect my Subwoofer's REM wire to the 3.5 jack in the radio (i bought a jack & splices in the wire) - that 3.5 jack is for the steering-wheel remote! the subs REM goes to the Blue/white wire. I wasted time and lost money. The salesman gave even worse information on hooking-up my already installed XM receiver to the new radio - I removed the power wires & then had to re-install them as he told me his upsell Auxiliary 3.5 jack wire would allow all the other wires to be removed - so I removed them - I had to pull the radio back out & reconnect everything I just removed! - PS: The XM tunes automatically to 88.5 on the radio so using the AUX wire he sold me is a waste of time & $ - The AUX can be used for something else - This radio is one of the top of the line available - and it does everything it claims to do, including powering my 4 new 225 watt Kicker speakers with no added amplifier really well - loud, crisp, clean sound. I love it, also running the S/O Subwoofer-wo
    Pros:
Does it all really well - comes with microphone for hands free bluetooth phone calls, USB for flash drive, Phone, Laptop, You could use the Aux connector (3.5 stereo jack) for more music (XM receiver or other) or plug in a screen to play DVDs in the CD player (you just need a screen) The blue illumination color is very cool. The option/s on screen display are nice. CD/DVD slot hides behind the face - that folds down with the press of a button on a spring loaded hinge.
    Cons:
the manual is 50 pages (that means 100 sides) and you will need most of it to learn how to use the many functions. Very much like what has happened to phones (now they do all kinds of things really well and, oh ya, they also make calls) This Radio does all kinds of things really well and oh ya, its also a Radio (LOL) - installation in your dash will not come with any directions specific to your vehicle. You get all the parts you need + all the parts you don't need. Good Luck, be patient.

This is my 5th Alpine head unit, and by far the best 1 that I have ever had. After starting the vehicle, the Bluetooth automatically connects back to my phone and the music or podcast picks up right where I left off. I have a Jeep Wrangler, and because of the road noise, I used to ignore phone calls because I would not be able to hear what they were saying. With the hands free I have no problem taking calls, I can hear them and they can hear me. It just works.
    Pros:
    Great Sound, Bluetooth, Good reception,

    Alpine Awesome!

Moving on from a Kenwood x994 this is a blessing and easy to use. My Kenwood would be stumped adding new files to the usb, not playing or recognizing them (even when same bit rate as the other mp3s). Nothing stops or slows down the Alpine, recognized the usb faster, plays everything! And navigating to my music is a breeze with the Alpine compared to the Kenwood. and its sub menu system. The biggest plus is direct access to my stations, never realized how much I'd miss buttons 1-6 (that is part of the Kenwood coolness factor, but it got tired at highway speeds). The Kenwood is more suited to a show car or one with steering wheel mounted control. The Alpine is a daily drivers dream, built in HD (in NY there is a lot to listen to!). and far faster and clearer than the kenwood add-on box. CD playing is simple, even mp3 discs, Pandora too. And while I have Sirus XM through my Onyx Plus (through the rear aux) it can handle that as well (with an opt. part). Sound out of the box was clear, but I added the Alpine plug in amp for better sound from my Infinity system, I was not disappointed. Crutchfield ships quick, answers questions and delivers the goods!
    Pros:
Sound quality, ease of navigation (intuitive), clear display(with direct view button) Plays my USB no problem.
    Cons:
Exacting removal and attachment of faceplate (on this the Kenwood is a 100% better). Even the faceplate carry box is super snug. The Kenwoodd build quality is a little better but I have no doubt the Alpine will last longer than my 98 civic.

I just upgraded my factory stereo to a Alpine CDE-HD149BT and wow what a difference. Being able to simk with my iPhone, make calls, play music off the phone, listen to Pandora is great!!!! Great design and easy to use.
    Pros:
Stereo sounds great and was easy to install. Instructions no problem to understand.
    Cons:
Crutchfield said the radio would not fit my 1987 Jaguar XJS. Once I reviewed th installation instructions on line i was able to determine the stereo would fit. Just needed to fabricate a couple of simple L-brackets that bolted to the sides of the stereo and it installed exactly like the factory radio.

    Alpine CDE-HD149BT

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I really liked the product. I wanted to get a gift for my wife to allow her to do Bluetooth hand free calling in a 1 DIN sized unit. This was a good product with all the connectivity I needed. Crutchfield also added in the 12V to 5V converter I needed for my model of vehicle which was a nice touch. I was able to install from scratch in about 2~3 hours with very few complications. I really like the screen in that it isn't just the 2 scrolling lines of text, instead it is a full LCD screen so you see other indicators.
    Pros:
Has a clock in the bottom right corner when you set the view to scroll HD radio data or whatever else. Biggest thing I always found was that a clock wasn't always visible in all the different modes you can put the display in with other models. This model had the feature and was why I chose it. The mic seems pretty good and I like that it shows your phone battery life while connected via bluetooth. Pretty good unit.
    Cons:
I wish these types of stereos would interrupt the currently playing media (HD Radio or USB...) like it does with phone calls with map instructions when your phone is in navigation mode (google maps navigation or iPhone equivalent). I didn't see many that would do that without being a navigation device already. Just a wish list item.

    Impressive Value

Written By EEWdad, Snohomish, WA on Monday, December 30, 2013
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Impressive features for a very affordable head unit. I added Sirius XM satellite radio. I was able to easily pair to my Windows phone (the only thing I cannot get to work is Pandora and that's not a huge loss for me); hands-free phone works great. The 24bit DAC and MX processing make music played from my iPod sound impressively good. I didn't expect a parametric equalizer and listener position / distance to speaker correction to be part of the feature set at this price. I had to borrow my wife's Android phone to load TuneIt (not available on Windows phone yet). HD radio sounds great and, I had no idea there were so many HD radio "multicast" channels behind my favorite stations - this really expands your listening options. In summary, great head unit - lots of listening and tweaking options. Sufficient power to deliver good bass in my small Pontiac; I'm very satisfied.
    Pros:
    Features, sound quality, display, value.
    Cons:
Can't turn-off all unused source options (eg: Pandora) from appearing in the main display; menus are a little confusing - some are context sensitive and not all settings are available in the "main" menu. Takes a little getting used to. The "real" users manual is on the included disc - many of the settings are not fully described in the printed manual. Minor stuff overall.

    What a difference!

Just replaced a Kenwood Head Unit I purchased from Crutchfield last year. I liked the sound quality of the Kenwood Unit, but the display was unreadable during the daytime - which is a problem as you have to scroll through favorite channels to change, no preset buttons. This was my primary reason for the change, the display is a big imrovement over the Kenwood. But, what a surprise to hear the difference in sound quality! Big difference on clarity at higher volumes, and somewhat (not much) easier to navigate through the settings. Highly recommend this unit overall! I agree with others - Tune It feature is nothing to waste ink over. No comment on the phone features, as I wont be using... Bluetooth connection works fine with my iPhone 5.
    Pros:
Sound Quality; Display is better than most; Variable color settings on controls; Presets (I'm old school); XM Ready (plug and play with my existing Kenwood XM tuner)
    Cons:
    No USB on front (with micro sized memory sticks - its nice to have a couple you can change with ease) Had to purchase remote separately; EQ and Xover settings are like computer menus on the space shuttle; would prefer more graphics and less digits;

    Alpine CDE-HD149BT

Written By RDelta, Central California on Thursday, October 24, 2013

Where to begin... I ran an old Sony mini-disc (circa 2000) for 10 years before upgrading to a Sony MEX BT5700U then to this Alpine. I have had Sonys for years and loved them but was always making excuses for the way my minidisc HU sounded. Enter the MEXBT5700U - WOW this unit sounded GREAT however, had some ignition noise, very slow to access USB music, display useless (small font and the worst fade in sunlight ever), bluetooth was fair at best, and the blinding white light ring around the volume knob made this unit unuseable. Enter the Alpine 149 - My first Alpine - I had such high hopes. I have used, tested, and experienced Alpines in others' cars etc but never bought one. Immediately, I determined that its sound was not as musical or engaging as the Sony MEX which was disappointing. At first, the menus and manual were overwhelming but after a couple of solid hours familiarizing myself with it, no problem - still, the sound quality was just decent. The volume knob feels flimsy, although other buttons are satisfactory. Sound quality and volume differs GREATLY between sources (despite Alpines numerous adjustments), low volume output through external amps (to achieve any volume at all you must increase external amp gains to the point of ign noise). So much more to say but bottom line is that its performance is disappointing, as is its sound quality. I was unable to find a way to defeat the internal crossovers - only to adjust them. Firmware problem?
    Pros:
Better FM tuner than previous Alpines, looks nice in the dash, HD Radio tuner, Bluetooth phone works and sounds good, display is large and viewable in any light conditions.
    Cons:
Sound quality is disappointing, cheap-feeling volume knob, seemingly low RCA outputs, sound adjustments (independent source volume and EQ) greatly impact volume in a negative way, speaker noise/clicking when searching USB drive for music, seems to have firmware problems. Not a terrible unit, but not what it should be.

Second alpine head I've owned and I'm very happy. Combined with the USB cable that is included and a separate xm adaptor I'm never at a loss for material. The unit itself is great quality and easy to operate. I installed this unit with a separate 4 channel amp so I can't comment on the power supply in the unit.

    Easy operation. Intuitive controls

    Small yet powerful

Written By PurplePTGT, White Lake, MI on Tuesday, October 08, 2013
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This thing pretty much covers all bases. FM-HD, CDs, MP3s, USB, Bluetooth, IPOD, hands-free and it even gets AM! The human interface works great, the sound quality is flawless and the tuner has sufficient sensitivity to pull in fairly weak stations cleanly. Would it be nice if you could do more fun stuff with the color scheme? Sure but, is that critical to the sound? Not really. What I would like is a loudness contour that compensates for road noise at lower volume levels. I would also like a clock displayed at all times, even with the power off. ...and please make it big enough for an old guy like me to read while driving. There's some powerful signal processing built into this thing that I don't have space to cover here. Suffice it to say that you could tweak this thing six ways from Sunday and never get bored. Installation was easy thanks to the adapters included with the purchase. I'm still working on the perfect settings for my particular application. Me and my SPL meter will just have to keep at it until we get it well, perfect!
    Pros:
Great sound, straightforward user interface, bring your signal source...this thing has it handled.
    Cons:
Some nits to pick: no loudness contour. Display completely blank when powered off, needs to display a clock. A legible clock should be displayed at all times, not some odd little spinning icon. Does not support flac or wma file types. "Spinning" the volume knob down doesn't result in silence in fact, it adjusts more slowly. Seems counter-intuitive.

'04 R quad cab, great deck!

Written By Mike M, Santa Barbara, CA on Friday, September 06, 2013
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Purchased this deck to add Bluetooth and iPhone integration to my system. Combined install with new 4 channel Alpine amplifier in '04 Ram quad can. Crutchfield harnessed w deck install simple. Adding amp increased install complexity routing RCAs and power/ground. Overall very doable with basic skills. Had problem pairing my iPhone to deck. Crutchfield tech support was great. Problem turned to be my iPhone 4S was defective, apple gave me free replacement and everything works great now.
    Pros:
Pandora and iPod Bluetooth streaming is great. Great display as well.

    Very solid product

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I really like the 149BT because it has all the features of the double din units but with much better design and functionality. The best thing about this device is that its very intuitive, all the controls and menu functions work as you think they should. Everything that you need is located in fingers reach from the center control. I really believe a good product is defined by its simplistic design. To have as much control as this device has and be uncomplicated is amazing. I know exactly how to get to each menu and make quick adjustments on the fly. Audio from Alpine is always great. I have not tried the Tuneit about as of yet but I hear its interesting.

The HD radio is clear at times but because of the area you live in it can be spotty. I also use the steering wheel controls which are very convenient as well. I also like the fact that you can turn off the internal amp to add more clarity to the signal and reduce noise. Overall a great product. If you really don't need video I would get this in a heartbeat. I had a double dine 7inch before this and returned it because it was slow and clunky. Also there is app direct mode which makes it much easier to access your Itunes Library on your iphone.
    Pros:
Loaded with tweaks, parametric EQ, MX Tuner, Built in Xover, Multi Illumination, logical layout and functionality, App Direct mode.
    Cons:
Green Illumination is dim in comparison to all other colors.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I purchased this head unit for the BT abilities, but I got so much more! It can do anything I can think of and the sound quality is so crisp and clear. My Nephew came over and he couldn't believe the improvement from my other Alpine. It is very, very clean, and if you are into sound quality as I am then you know what I mean. The BT is very nice to have for the phone as well, I don't have to talk louder then normal and the provided mic picks it up cleanly. I have had no complaints about me having an echo or not being able to hear me, nothing at all! and I have no trouble hearing them over ALL the speakers. LOL I am very pleased with my choice to purchase this item. The only thing I am a little disappointed about is when I went to get it installed the shop sells this same unit for a lower price, but not enough to worry about returning it by any means. All and all an awesome unit. Thank you crutchfield!
    Pros:
Sound Quality, Features, ease of operation. The expandability of the head unit.
    Cons:
No Remote included, Storage case for the face plate seems a little on the thin side, not as heavy built as older units.

Works with my prior alpine's remote control. You can use a USB flash memory to play music.

Love this radio so far. Still haven't finish setting up all the options yet; it has tons of them.
    Pros:
Bluetooth, Android compatible, Pandora, detailed screen, easy to navigate, has its own app
    Cons:
difficult to get Bluetooth devices to save to the radio.
