Want to listen to your iPod through your car audio system? If you have an Alpine stereo with "Full Speed™" controls, all it takes is this KCE-422i connection cable — there's no extra gear to install. With just one cable between your iPod and your stereo, you'll get super-fast data transfer and full playback control.

Once connected, Alpine's Full Speed controls allow you to manage just about every playback function right from the radio's faceplate. QuickSearch™ makes it easy to find the music that you want — jump between artists, albums, and playlists at the push of a button. You can even scroll through songs using the rotary control knob. Album, artist, and song information from your iPod will show up on the radio's display, too.

On the sound front, you can use the Bass Engine tone controls on your Alpine stereo to coax the best possible performance out of your compressed music files. Alpine's Full Speed connection works with all dockable iPods and charges the iPod's battery while it's connected. Length: 6-1/2'. Warranty: 1 year.

Compatibility Note: Be sure to check "Details" for specific iPod model compatibility with this iPod adapter.

Note: Sorry, Crutchfield cannot ship Alpine products to Guam or Puerto Rico.

Why would I need an iPod® adapter?

An iPod adapter allows you to connect your iPod to your car stereo, then access your playlists with your stereo's controls - a great idea for several reasons. One, you can scroll through your song titles on your stereo's larger display, instead of squinting down at your iPod. Two, you can route the adapter cable to your glove compartment or center console, so your iPod stays safely out of sight. Three, the iPod adapter keeps your iPod fully charged, so it's ready to rock when you leave your car. And last of all, some adapters bypass your iPod's internal digital-to-analog converter, using your stereo's superior DAC to turn your files back into music.

Works great, until it shorts out

Written By tim, Southfield, MI on Wednesday, January 13, 2010

I have been using this cable for about a month now with a 1G iPod Touch. It charges and
plays music just like it's supposed to, but please note that it will not charge 2G and later
Touches. You also cannot navigate through music on the ipod while it is playing on the
head unit.
Yesterday while I was in the car, the music suddenly stopped, and the head unit
displayed "Searching..." After a few minutes, I unplugged the cable and found that the
ipod was burning hot, along with the cable connector. There was a tiny burn mark on the
cable connector across a few of the pins. Turns out the cable had shorted out my ipod
somehow and nearly destroyed it. I was lucky because after cooling down and rebooting
the ipod a couple times, it still works.

Alpine needs an update

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I have been using this cable with the Alpine CDA-9883 for 2 years and have been extremely pleased. I have a iPod Nano tucked in a small cubby in the Honda Pilot and everything works great. The reason I docked it one star is I recently upgraded my wife's phone to the iPhone 3GS (2nd Gen) and this cable is not compatible. I receive an error when I connect the phone but if I ignore the message it will play music through the connection but the alpine deck will not control the device and it will not charge. Check your compatibility for the best experience (the iPhone is not listed). Great website Crutchfield!

Works with 3rd Gen Classic 10GB IPOD

Written By Demian, Mission Viejo, CA on Friday, September 11, 2009

I was skeptical when my friend gave me this head unit with the IPOD cable. For the heck of it I plugged the cable in and connected my 3rd Gen IPOD classic and sure enough it charges, displays the APLINE logo and can be controlled through the deck. Alpine and Crutchfield says in the technical specifications only 4th Gen and up classic will work, my 3rd gen works and I don't have to worry if I leave it in the car.

Not a whole lot to say about a cable. The KCE-422 works just as advertised, feels well made and was long enough to allow for some flexibility when installing.

Charging newer iPods

Written By Bob, NC on Sunday, November 09, 2008

If you have/are buying one of the iDA-x00 Digital Media Receivers, you only need this cable if you want to the the head unit with an pre-5th Generation iPod. If you have a 5th Generation iPhone, iPod Touch or iPhone, the USB-to-iPod cable that comes for free with the head unit will work (and charge) the newer iPods.

I bought this cable along with my iDA-100 DMR & installed both the USB cable and the Full Speed cable in my glove compartment. The USB cable connects to a USB port on the back of the head unit, and the Full Speed interface cable plugs into the Full Speed interface on the back of the head unit, so both cables can be connected & used at the same time. I am currently using an old 4th Generation iPod in this car, but at some point when that one dies I want to get the functionality supported by the USB cable (album art, etc.) without having to yank the head unit out again, so I just installed both cables when the unit went into the dash.

Not clear on what happens if you want to use both a Bluetooth module AND a Full Speed iPod cable, since there is only one Full Speed jack on the head unit...maybe the Bluetooth module has both Full Speed in and out jacks??...

Not needed with new Alpine iDA-X iPod models

Written By bsfiosco, NJ on Tuesday, October 28, 2008

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I bought an Alpine iDA-X100 and so far I love it. I bought this cable because the marketing for the product made it sound like you needed this cable to get full IPOD functionality. With this cable the iDA-X100 will NOT display the IPOD album images. That only occurs if you use the include (free) USB cable. So save yourself some money and pass on this if your getting and iDA-X### model. The only way you find out this information is to read the manual after you buy it or read the online manual before you buy it which few people ever do.

Won't Charge ITouch

Written By David, Cleveland, OH on Tuesday, September 23, 2008

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This product worked great until I bought a new Apple ITouch last night. I was very displeased this
morning when I plugged the ITouch into my car stereo and it informed me that charging was not supported. I sure hope Alpine gets their act together and produces a new cable. I have three
car stereos set up this way, I don't want to switch from Alpine but I will if they don't act and another brand does.

Won't charge iPhone 3G

Written By James, Arlington, VA on Friday, August 29, 2008

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This cable won't charge the iPhone 3G. It can control it just fine (I'm using it with the CDA-9857) but Apple changed which pins are used to charge the phone. Supposedly manufacturers were given ample notice that this was going to happen but many chose to ignore it.

Hopefully Alpine updates this cable, especially considering all the headunits they sell/have sold that use it and the fact that it is still a current product. My guess is that all new ipods released after the iPhone 3G will use this new pin layout for charging (via usb pins vs. firewire). Alpine, please offer an updated product!

Does exactly what it should do, I like that it charges the ipod. You can't use the ipod while it's plugged in but have to use the head unit's interface, which doesn't bother me, but may bother some.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This product is excellent and works exactly as advertised. My only goal would be finding a way to control the playback from the iPhone. (yes, this works for an iphone after you click through the airplain mode question) I'd just rather be able to use the touch screen versus control from the head unit but this adaptor was the only style of input that my CDE-9881 accepted.

Written By Wayne, Janesville, WI on Tuesday, December 11, 2007

First of all, for all the bad reviews, they do not apply to this product. The interface has nothing to do with this product, but the cd player it is hooked up to. Also, I don't know if you know what an Ipod is, but they automatically reset to the first song after a period of time no matter what, also not this products fault.

SO, about this product, it works fast and effectively. The sound quality is crystal clear, even through high end systems. It is an easy choice to get this product over and FM transmitter or other Ipod product.

Good but...

Written By Robert, Michigan on Wednesday, August 08, 2007

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

It's good. I've used RF style ipod interfaces and to say they s--k is being kind.

I bought this with the 9885.

It's quick, but there are issues. When the car is off for over a day, the ipod song list goes back to the first song on the ipod. I have over 8,900 songs on my ipod so if I was listening to something in the R's and the song list resets (to the first song), I have a L--O--N--G time of spinning the multipurpose knob to get back to the 'R' section.

It takes A L---O---N---G time to get through the list of artists. In my opinion, WAY to long.

But the sound, once I get there, is great! Disconnect the ipod and the list resets to.

iPhone + Alpine KCE-422i iPod cable + CDA-9856 = good

Written By Larry, Frederick, MD on Wednesday, July 04, 2007

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I have had my Alpine CDA-9856 for about a year and a half now and I have been using the Alpine KCE-422i iPod cable with it all that time.

It is not perfection, but it does a very nice job with ipods.

Just yesterday I got an 8GB iPhone, so of course I had to try it out in my Jeep Wrangler.

The connector snaps in just fine without any added pushing our fussing. After all, the phone is very similar to a nano in many ways.

Immediately you get an error screen saying that this accessory is not compatible with the iPhone and do I want to put the phone into Airplane mode to avoid interference.

I say no, and voila, the music starts playing from my iPhone.

It even fades and pauses when you make a call and then it unpauses and fades back in when you hang up.

I have not yet received a call with it connected to the ipod cable.

As far as I can tell, all of the search functions of the head unit work normally via the cable when connected to an iPhone.

I have not tested it extensively, but so far except for the error message, it seems to work flawlessly with the iPhone.

And for $30, that's a pretty good deal, wouldn't you say?

This is an excellent setup:
Head Unit:CDA-9883,
HD Tuner:TUA-T500HD
iPod Cable:KCE-422i

iPod Cable:
I went with Alpine components due to its reputation for having an excellent iPod interface using the High Speed Cable. The reputation is well deserved. The interface is easy to learn and navigate, it is easy to find the song you are looking for using the search functions and the percentage search feature. Routing the cable through the dash into the glove box worked great for my setup.
Overall: This setup works great.

This is the perfect. I have the Alpine CDA-9885. I have been extremely great. The songs load almost as quickly as if you were using the iPod itself and finding a song using the head unit is smart. It provides whatever information you could want right on the HU display, and on the CDA-9885 it's easy to read. You see the Song and Composer. This is a great product.

way overrated

Written By Ron, Brooksville, FL on Monday, May 07, 2007

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This iPod interface is not nearly as great as some reviewers make it out to be. Searching is slow (item by item only), no listing for Audiobooks, no fast forward or rewind except by the entire song (which is not useful with an audiobook). When you disconnect the ipod you have to look up the song again on it to continue listening.

The sound is very good and no FM interference, but the interface is a pain. I'd been better off with a aux input.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I can tell you from experience that this iPod adapter does not have the limitations that other manufacturer's adapters are known for. I first bought a Kenwood CD player and the Kenwood adapter. I then discovered that I would have to set up playlists in my iPod--maximum 6--and choose one of the playlists to listen to in my car. If I wanted to listen to a specific artist, I would have to push (>>|) track by track to find the one I wanted, and the display did not show any information until the song started playing.

Needless to say, I returned the Kenwood and went with the Pioneer and it is as good as everyone before me has said. On a side note, though I had read hundreds of testimonies about how wonderfully easy returns were with Crutchfield, it was still easier than expected. First of all, they include a return shipping label with your order. You just have to call to get a return number. They don't hassle you or threaten to charge restocking fees; they even don't insist on getting back the installation gear they include free with purchase. Even if you can get your gear for $10 - 20 less at another online seller, it is worth the peace of mind to buy from Crutchfield.

Back to this iPod adapter, it allows your Pioneer head unit to operate almost exactly like your clickwheel. You can search by Artist, Album, Playlist, and you turn the dial just like you would the click wheel, and the Pioneer quickly scrolls through the data and displays the text instantly. If you're looking for a seemless way to integrate your iPod into your car, this is absolutely the way to go. And the sound quality is excellent--just as good as playing a CD.

Now we're talking! Alpine KCE-422i cable and 2006 "full speed" capable receiver nails the "iPod-in-car" thing...Finally!!!

Control of iPod from dash is instant and complete. Track info scrolls past and you can show whatever you want (artist, album, song name...) Remembers its place when car shut off / restarted (that's key, think about it. You stop to get gas and now you've got to listen to the whole song again??? Lame). Not anymore! I have no problems navigating 300 artist (3600 tracks). But you have to narrow your search by artist / album or playlist to be practical (this isn't a limitation of Alpine, even on a computer you don't search for one song among thousands. Come on). But you can search by song if you want (hope I'm not driving behind you, though).

Too bad their initial offering was so limited and slow as to be useless. Cost of being on the cutting edge, I guess.

2nd times a charm, though...

Best ipod interface by far

Written By David, Sonora, Ca on Saturday, December 30, 2006

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This is with out a doubt the best part of our Alpine system. The sound is fantastic and this is by far the fastest ipod interface on the market. Alpine went directly to Apple and designed this cable and their 2006 receivers to work best with ipods, and it shows. Now if they would work on the front panel buttons on their receivers and the display. Crutchfield has the best price on this cable also at $29.99, a steal.

Exactly What I Was Looking For!

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Paired up with the Alpine 9856, I couldn't have expected anything better. This was the perfect solution for the woes of not wanting to constantly change CDs. Now I have 3500 songs at my fingertips! And when they say that this connection is fast. they mean FAST! I will admit, at first, I was a bit skeptical as to how fast this syncs the head unit to the iPod. After playing with an iPod setup of a different manufacturer in a friend's Navigator, I wasn't really impressed with the integration of iPods to automobile head units. Since I had prior experience with Alpine, a couple extra bucks to blow off on the CDA-9856, a strong desire to use the iPod in the car, and a need to establish a relationship with, I decided to team up the iPod connector with a new head unit. Pleasantly, I was surprised to find that the alpine setup really is 100x faster (I can scroll and search thru my playlists, song names, etc. without having to worry about taking my eyes off the road).

If you're looking to integrate the iPod with your vehicle and either have, or are thinking of buying, an Alpine iPod connector ready head unit... this IS what you want. I'll tell ya, when it comes to getting the iPod to work fluidly with the car head unit, this will not disappoint you.

The control and flexibility are outstanding and I love the way this gives me full ID3 tag info on the 9857's two line display. Alpine + iPod with this interface is awesome!

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I started off ordering Sony's Ipod controller, so I have something to compare this to. I am so happy with the Alpine setup. It controls the Ipod just as fast as you could using the Ipod itself. I've got over 7000 songs on my Ipod and I can navigate to any song in seconds through my Alpine. With the Sony, it literally took about 10 minutes to do the same task. AND the Alpine remembers exactly where you are when you shut off the car and restart. It is also really nice not having an external controller box, just a little tiny cable! This controller is almost 100% perfect--if I had to find a negative it would be that once you get a particular album playing, you can't scroll through song titles by name but rather you use the forward and back arrows by track number and it takes a second or two for the song title to appear (just like if you were playing a cd). But I can't complain about anything with the Alpine. I can't even describe how much better this is.

Alpine KCE-422i iPod cable

Written By Mgyver1, Las Vegas, NV on Monday, May 29, 2006

The adapter was easy to install and is very easy to use. With well organized playlists it makes it even easier to navigate your ipod. I have heard the full speed cable is a dramatic improvement over the previous ipod adapters but when flipping between songs is still isn't as fast as when playing a regular CD. Something to think about though is that a CD doesn't hold 2-60 gigabytes worth of songs! The only thing on navigating is when selecting playlist search, artist search, or album search you push play for your selection. When you search by song you have to push Mode instead of play; just something to remember. Great product, the sound quality is impressive and excellent, and once you get used to searching through the ipod it becomes a breeze. I also like how you can put the ipod anywhere since you don't need to look at it. Now my ipod stays hidden from peering eyes.

Wow thats all that I have to say. Operation is not complicated at all like some people said it. Some people like me will be able to operate without even looking in the manual or just skimming it through once. And some people will take forever to learn because that is the fact with everything. But is defenitly awsome thing to have in your car. If you didn't place your order now I don't know what the heck you waiting for. Run chicken, run........

I was basing my entire car stereo purchase on iPod compatibility, and after doing some research, I had decided to buy a unit with aux-in and wait until the next generation of iPod adapters came in.

Well, right before I ordered my unit, I noticed Alpine had come out with this Full Speed cable. I bought the CDA-9856 and the cable, and it's great. It's fast and easy, and the long cable is great for finding a place to stash the iPod away. I highly recommend this.

I've just installed the KCE-422i with an Alpine CDA-9856 and it is absolutely perfect. The cord is nice and small, and easy to hide away in a console, glove box or wherever you choose. The interface is perfect, and super fast. You can now use your head unit just as you would your iPod with only a few extra buttons to push along the way. I had the previous interface and was rather displeased, and resorted to just using various playlists on shuffle. Now I may choose whatever music I want at any time without the long wait. If you buy this product, I guarantee you will not be disappointed.

Better then the Previous

Written By Marcus, Knoxville, TN on Wednesday, February 08, 2006

I just got this cable today for my Alpine 9856 headunit. It works perfectly! I'm easily able to browse by playlist, artist, or whatever. It seems to be faster than the previous generation of iPod adaptors, and is just about as fast as the interface on the iPod itself, nevermind the fact that it's less than 1/3 the price. It also scrolls the song info like the iPod itself. The only improvement I would make is to improve the controls on the Alpine 9856 itslef, as I agree with the current review about the confusion between when to use "mode" and "function." With a slightly improved interface, the headunit controls would be just as fast as the iPod itself.

The best iPod sound quality yet!!!!

Written By Mike, Stafford, VA on Tuesday, February 07, 2006

Install: 2002 Nissan Altima

Sound quality is superb. The Alpine CDE-9852 head unit coupled with this KCE-422i adapter cable is a no brainer.

I recently purchased an iPod and wanted to listen to it in my car. I searched other options such as the Harmon Kardon Drive + Play system and I found that if I purchased the Alpine CDE-9852 head unit for $179.99 along with the iPod KCE-422i adapter cable for $29.99 I would pay nearly the same as I would for the Drive + Play. The best thing about the head unit and the adapter cable is that it's a direct hook-up, unlike the Drive + Play which relies on an FM modulator and is prone to static and sound distortion. With Alpine's direct hook-up sound quality could not be better. There is zero static or interference. In fact the sound quality is just as good if not better than a CD.

Alpine CDE-9852: $179.99
Alpine KCE-422i adapter cable: $29.99
Superb iPod sound quality: Priceless

As far as Crutchfield goes, they are awesome. I ordered everything late Friday night. I even received an email letting me know that the KCE-422i adapter cable was backordered, since it wasn't supposed to hit the market until that Tuesday. To my surprise I received everything including the adapter cable on Tuesday!!!! I received better service than I ever could have expected and with Crutchfield supplying the install kit, wire harness, and master sheet (all for free), they made sure I had everything I needed to complete my install. I will definitely be ordering from Crutchfield again!!

iPod Full Speed: The KCE-422i allows you to connect your Apple iPod to select 2006-2009 Full Speed-compatible Alpine head units. It has an iPod dock connector on one end and a "D-shaped" 10-pin DIN plug on the other end. There is no hideaway box to deal with as with many other iPod adapters.

iPod Compatibility: This adapter cable can be used to interface a compatible receiver with most iPods with a dock connector. The cable gives you full control and full sound at full speed. You can quickly and easily search through all of the music contained on your iPod through Playlist, Artist, Album or Song searches. You can view Artist, Album, Song Information and Song Number right on the head unit's display. The cable will also power the iPod and charge the battery. The Alpine KCE-422i is "Made for iPod" compatible and supports the following iPod model features (as of Dec. 2009):

Note: The Full Speed cable will not charge the iPod nano (4th/5th generation) or iPod touch (2nd/3rd generation) without the Alpine KCX-422TR 12V-to-5V iPod adapter (500KCX422T, sold separately). Apple firmware updates may change functionality results.

Alpine Head Unit Compatibility: The KCE-422i is compatible with select 2006-2009 Alpine head units. These head units have a dedicated iPod Full Speed connector. The cable does not connect to the Ai-NET interface on some Alpine receivers. Once the adapter is connected, the iPod appears on the head unit's display as a selectable source. Current compatible head units include: CDA-9884, CDA-9886, CDA-9887, CDE-9872, CDE-987, and the EX-10.
