About the Alpine KTP-190U Power Pack

Buck Pomerantz

Add some bass to your factory system

Alpine's KTP-190U "Power Pack" mono amplifier can power a 2-ohm sub with 60 watts RMS, yet this compact amp will fit behind most dashboards for a truly stealthy installation. The KTP-190U can also send 90 watts to a 1-ohm load safely, so it's a great choice as a replacement amp for a low-impedance factory sub. The KTP-190U will work with most non-premium factory radios and aftermarket receivers, but it's not a plug-and-play installation — you'll have to wire it into your system.

A low-pass filter helps keep your subwoofer sounding fat and full, and an optional wired remote will let you control the level from your front seat. In terms of power, the KTP-190U matches up well with most factory radios or aftermarket receivers.

Installation note: If your car receiver's power circuit is protected by a 15-amp or larger fuse (check your fuse box or owner's manual), you can tap into it to power your KTP-190U. Otherwise, you'll have to run a power wire to the battery. Be sure to add a 10-amp inline fuse as close to the battery as possible.

You can install this compact amp behind most dashboards, and can splice into your speaker wiring to get signal to the KTP-190U.

Features

CTA-2006 Compliant: The specifications given by Alpine for the amplifier comply with the CTA-2006 mobile amplifier power testing and measurement standards from the CTA (Consumer Technology Association). This voluntary standard advocates a uniform method for measuring an amplifier's RMS power output and signal to noise ratio, allowing consumers to compare car amplifiers and receivers under the same conditions (apples to apples).

  • Power Output:
    • 2Ω: 60 watts x 1 RMS (14.4 volts, <1% THD+N)
    • 1Ω: 90 watts x 1 RMS (14.4 volts, <1% THD+N)
  • S/N:
    • @ 1 watt: 80 dB
    • @ rated power: 98 dB
  • Frequency Response: 10-120 Hz (+0/-3 dB)
  • Damping Factor: >200 (10 watts into 4Ω at 100 Hz)
  • Input Impedance: >10 kΩ
  • Input Sensitivity:
    • into 1Ω: 5.9 volts (rated power into 1Ω)
    • into 4Ω: 5.0 volts (rated power into 4Ω)
Notes:
  • This amplifier is intended to be used as factory OEM subwoofer amplifier replacement with a factory OEM low impedance 1-ohm subwoofer only.
  • Output connection is intended for a 1 ohm subwoofer (90W x 1), but will work with 2 ohm (60W x 1) and 4 ohm (30W x 1). However, power level is not enough to drive most 2 ohm or 4 ohm subwoofers.

Fixed Gain w/ Variable Crossover: The input gain on this amplifier is fixed and not adjustable. Because the KTP-190U is a subwoofer amp, the low pass crossover is always engaged. The crossover point is adjustable; choose 80, 100, or 120 Hz.

Wiring Harness: The amp's power/speaker harness has a 10-pin proprietary connector on one end that plugs into the KTP-190U, and bare wires on the other end to connect to constant power (with 10-amp fuse installed), ground, the radio's speaker level outputs (left and right channels), and the subwoofer input. The power wire can often be spliced into the radio's power source.

Note: The factory radio circuit needs to be a minimum of 15-amps. If it is not, a separate power and ground will need to be installed for the KTP-190U.

Auto Turn-on: A circuit automatically turns the amplifier on when it senses a speaker-level input signal.

Wired Remote: An RJ-14 jack is provided for connecting an optional RUX-KNOB.2 wired remote (500RUXKNOB.2, sold separately), allowing remote control of the output level of the amplifier.

Q
Can this be used for a center channel amp?

Sorry, I do not know. I have a 2004 Toy 4 Runner, the rear speaker went, I called Crutchfield, bought a new speaker and followed the techs suggestion to obtain this little amp.

...I guess you could BUT this amp only has speaker level inputs, and a low pass filter. Kinda need a high pass or bandpass for a center channel. It has been playing into a 1.3 ohm load in my truck for almost two years FWIW. Great amp.
adam  Jun 06, 2018
A
Class D with 1% THD, you could use it as a center channel, but I'd personally want something cleaner to produce vocals and midrange. This is more for replacing the subwoofer output on a factory radio to the small-ish 6" class woofers that some cars have.

Q
I'd like to run an RCA cable from my head unit to this amplifier. Does an adapter/cable exist that connects directly to the amp, with the other end being a female RCA? i.e. similar to the type of cable that comes with Alpine's KTP-445u?

A
I'm not familiar with KTP455u. But most head units require a male rca adapter at the unit. There are no rca's on this amplifier. You have to connect the wires on the harness provided. you would need to purchase an adapter with male rca's on one end to speaker wires on the other. Amazon is a great place to find something like that. I think you should find one for $10 or less.
tim  Jul 18, 2017

I only remember there being high level wires that hook to radio speaker wires. No rca hook ups.
jason  Jul 17, 2017
A
The only way I know to hook this up is to split of of the rear speaker wires and wire into this unit and out to sub. You can purchase the Rux-Knob to try to match the sub volume to the rears. Once adjusted, all the speakers will raise and lower in volume together from volume knob on tour head unit. This unit is mainly used to add a sub to a stock setup without much fuss. Other wise you may be better off going with a legit amp. Hope this helps.

Q
I have installed an Alpine KTP-445A amplifier in conjunction with the Alpine CDE-178BT head-unit and a number of Alpine component and coaxial speakers. The combination sounds great - however, I decided to install the KTP-190U has well to have more flexibility in controlling the bass output. I installed the KTP-190U with high-level inputs coming from the already amplified circuit of the rear speakers. Unfortunately the KTP-190U doesn't power up (for lack of a better description, as there isn't any indicator light). Could the fact that the high-level input from the rear speakers are already amplified cause any of the issues that I'm experiencing?

Q
Will 30w rms be enough power for two 3" (yes 3") subwoofers wired in parallel for 4 ohm? Each sub is rated at 25w rms, 50w max.

I'm not sure I will be of any help to your question. I'm running this amp mono to my stock sub in 2008 Honda ridgeline. It works great for that, also small enough to fit behind my head unit. Great little power pack!

Q
How do you wire this amp for 1 ohm?
tim  Dec 26, 2015
1 answer
A
This will depend a bit on what you are connecting to the amplifier. The easiest way would be to connect a single 2-ohm DVC subwoofer wired in parallel. I would recommend reaching out to an Advisor by phone (1-800-324-9695) or online chat to discuss other wiring configurations. They should be able to help discuss what you will be connecting and the best way to wire it.

Q
Does this unit only accept speaker level inputs, or can it use RCA line level inputs from an aftermarket deck? Looking to power an OEM sub that used to be powered by the factory head unit.

it has speaker only hook ups and i might add with a rux knob its really nice!
craig  Jan 05, 2015

This unit only accommodates line level inputs, no RCA inputs available. I installed this unit and a Pioneer TS-SW2002D2 in the rear deck an 2005 Acura TL. I was looking for a super small amp so as not to add components to the trunk space in this car. I'd be careful when using this with an OEM speaker. You may have issues with frequency range and/or power rating.. Good luck.
anthony j  Jan 02, 2015
A
they make an speaker to RCA adapter I did not try this I just connected directly to the rear speaker channels it requires a left and right input.
keith  Jan 02, 2015
A
There is no rca inputs. You have to wire it together. It is not hard to do. We wired it just to our regular speakers. Our sub is powered by its own amp.
