About the Alpine PDR-F50

Buck Pomerantz

Concentrated power

Alpine managed to pack more power per square inch into their PDR-F50 4-channel Power Density Reference amplifier than almost any other amp in its class. The PDR-F50 can put out 85 watts RMS per channel, giving extra clarity and volume to your full-range speakers, and it'll fit in almost any of the tiny spaces you find in many cars and trucks these days. You can also use this versatile amp in 3-channel mode, driving your speakers with the front channels, and bridging the rear channels to send up to 250 watts RMS to your sub.

Tone control

Alpine included the tone controls you'll need to fine-tune your system so your speakers sound their best. You can use the high-pass filters to remove the extreme low bass from your full-range speakers, so they'll play more efficiently. If you plan on running subwoofers with your PDR-F50, you can adjust the low-pass filters and bass boost to get just the right bass tone.

Superior sound and build quality

Alpine built the PDR-F50 to exacting physical and electronic standards, resulting in a tough, powerful amp with an incredibly clean and noise-free output. All the electrical connections are made on one side, for more convenient and neat installations. Speaker-level inputs allow you to use this amp in almost any system, even one with a factory radio. And you can rotate the badge, so the Alpine logo can always display right side up no matter which way you mount your PDR-F50.

Features

Channel Design: The Alpine PDR-F50 can be configured as a 4-channel, 3-channel, or 2-channel amplifier. The amplifier is stable to 2-ohms in stereo, 4-ohms when bridged.

CEA-2006 Compliant: CEA-2006 is a system of testing and measurement for mobile audio amplifiers. This voluntary standard advocates a uniform method for measuring an amplifier's RMS power output and signal-to-noise ratio. The criteria for measuring power uses a DC input voltage of 14.4 volts and the RMS power output is measured into a 4Ω load, with 1% or less Total Harmonic Distortion plus noise (THD+N), and over a frequency range of 20 Hz to 20 kHz (for full range amplifiers). Signal-to-Noise ratio is measured in weighted absolute decibels (dBA) at a reference of 1 watt into 4Ω. CEA-2006 standards allow consumers to compare car amplifiers and receivers under the same conditions (apples to apples). Using CEA-2006 criteria, the Alpine PDR-F50 is rated at 85 watts RMS x 4 channels with an 87 dBA signal to noise ratio. The signal to noise ratio at the rated power output (not CEA-2006 conditions) is 106 dB.

LED: The top mounted LED Power indicator glows blue when the amplifier is turned on and changes to red when the protection circuit is engaged.

Auto Turn-on: When using a speaker level input, the amp will turn on automatically when it senses the input signal.

Verification Certificate: The amplifier comes with a certificate that lists the RMS power output of the specific amplifier. It also lists the model number, serial number, test date, and the test conditions (14.4 volts, 2 ohms).

Controls

Hidden Controls: The amplifier's controls are hidden under a cover plate. The plate is removed by unscrewing two machine screws with the supplied 2mm Allen wrench.

Gain control: There are independent rotary gain controls for the channel-1/2 and channel-3/4 amplifier sections. The gain settings are continuously variable from 0.2 to 4.0 volts.

Crossover: The amp has independent crossover mode and frequency controls for channels-1/2 and 3/4:

  • Mode: choose off (crossover is bypassed), high pass, or low pass
  • Frequency: rotary dial; 50-400 Hz

Input: The two position input switch configures the inputs:

  • 1/2: only inputs 1/2 are used, and are shorted to channels 3/4
  • 3/4: all four RCA inputs are used

Bass Boost: The bass boost circuit provides +6 dB or +12 dB signal boost centered at 50 Hz to channels-3/4. The bass boost can also be turned off.

Connections

Terminal Layout: For wiring convenience, all of the inputs and outputs on the amplifier are on one side.

Power Input: Two set-screw terminals are provided for connecting the power and ground cables. The terminals accept up to 4-gauge wire (a 4-gauge wiring kit is recommended). The set screws are tightened/loosened with the included 3mm Allen wrench.

Remote Turn-on: The remote turn-on set screw terminal will accept up to 12-gauge wire. The set screw is tightened/loosened with the included 2mm Allen wrench.

Speaker Outputs: The four pair of speaker outputs set-screw terminals will accept up to 12-gauge wire. The set screws are tightened/loosened with the included 2mm Allen wrench.

Signal Input: The Alpine PDR-F50 is equipped with two pair of female RCA jack inputs; Channel-1/2 and Channel-3/4. The RCA inputs will accept either speaker-level or line level signals from your car's head unit. A speaker level signal is connected to the RCA inputs using a speaker wire to RCA adapter (sold separately).

Fuses: The amp is protected with two 30-amp ATO fuses.

A
Yes it should if your running the RCA cables and remote turn on straight from the head unit. This is a nice amp great power and sound. I am running it from a factory unit through alpine r-type component and coaxial speakers.

Yes but don't forget to order your amp wiring kit. The people at Crutchfield will help guide you on which specific one to buy. They're amazing

Q
I know it might sound stupid but I was noticing the bass boost and frequency variable was only 50Hz and up. What's the Hz range this amp is good for? Thanks!

A
The Alpine PDR-F50 is a full-range (20Hz-20kHz) amplifier--it has separate, variable high- and low-pass filters (50-400 Hz, 12 dB/octave) on the front and rear channels; as well as a selectable bass boost (0, 6, or 12 dB at 50 Hz) applied to the rear channels only. If you would like to discuss in further detail, feel free to contact an Advisor directly by phone (1-800-324-9695) or online chat.

Q
Will this hook up to a Factory Head Unit lke the 45x4 and 50x4 Apine Amps?
rusty  Mar 28, 2016

A
This amplifier does feature both the speaker level input and signal sensing turn-on so you can add it to a factory stereo by using some speaker wire to RCA adapters: http://www.crutchfield.com/p_206KISL/item.html You'll still need to provide power from the battery & ground to the chassis. We recommend using 4 gauge wire for this amplifier. I hope that helps! My Bio: http://www.crutchfield.com/Support/Bio.aspx?bio=5
