Our take on the Alpine PLV-7
LAT Subwoofer System

by Ken Nail

Who needs a powered subwoofer?

To produce bass, you need a sub, an enclosure, and an amplifier, and it can be little tricky to match them all up. A powered sub eliminates all the hassle, as the manufacturer designs the enclosure to house the sub and amp together. This all-in-one solution is especially useful in smaller vehicles, where there's no room to mount a separate amp, or in any vehicle where you need every bit of cargo space. Powered subs range from small, flat boxes that fit under your seat to larger boxes that go in your trunk.

Alpine Authorized Online Dealer

Revolutionary technology, massive sound, and Alpine — they just go together. Alpine's LAT Subwoofer Systems utilize cutting-edge Linear Array Transducer (LAT) technology, which uses a series of small woofers to create sound output equal to that of a much larger subwoofer, while using much less space.

The PLV-7 Subwoofer System's LAT subwoofer array consists of six 7-inch cones that provide the same bass punch as a pair of 12" subs. Alpine houses the array in a super-efficient Ultra Reflex enclosure, and matches the subs up to a highly efficient 500-watt digital amplifier. The result? Clean, pounding bass from an enclosure that takes up 30% less space than a dual 12" box.

The PLV-7 incorporates speaker- and preamp-level inputs, and features a low-frequency filter for matching the bass output to your system. A remote bass knob gives you fingertip control of the variable bass boost.

Product Overview: The PLV-7 features Linear Array Transducer (LAT) technology, which uses a series of small woofers to create sound output equal to that of a much larger subwoofer. The subwoofer array consists of six 7-inch cones that provide bass punch similar to a pair of 12" subs. The woofers are housed in a small Ultra Reflex enclosure and powered by a 500-watt RMS amplifier.

Low-pass Filter: The built-in low-pass filter can be adjusted from 50 to 120 Hz. The crossover slope is 24 dB/octave.

Auto Turn-On: The amplifier will turn on automatically whenever there is a signal at the speaker level inputs. When using the line level inputs you must also use a remote turn on lead.

Bass Boost: The amplifier features a 0 to +12dB bass boost, centered at 45 Hz.

Remote Bass Control Knob: You can control the bass level from the driver's seat with the supplied Remote Bass Control knob. The mounting brackets on the control knob housing can be reversed to mount above or below a flat surface. If you want to fabricate a custom bracket, the existing brackets can be removed and the housing can be flush mounted. The control knob connects to the amplified subwoofer via the supplied remote bass cable. The control knob housing measures:

  • Width: 0.952 (1.785" with the mounting brackets)
  • Height: 1.004"
  • Depth: 1.628" (2.475" with the knob and wiring)

Phase Control: The subwoofer's phase control allows you to reverse the phase of the subwoofer's output relative to the system. If the bass sounds muddy or unclear, adjusting the phase control can sometimes strengthen the bass attack.

Rear Panel:

  • Gain Control: rotary control that allows you to adjust the level of the subwoofer
  • Crossover Control: rotary control that allows you to adjust the low-pass filter from 50 to 120 Hz
  • Bass EQ: rotary control that allows you to adjust the bass boost from 0 to +12 dB
  • Phase Control: switch that allows you to set the subwoofer's phase to 0°  or 180°
  • Input: switch that allows you to choose the speaker-level or RCA-level inputs

Rear Panel:

  • BATT: set-screw terminal that accepts up to 4-gauge wire
  • REM: set-screw terminal that accepts up to 8-gauge wire
  • GND: set-screw terminal that accepts up to 4-gauge wire
  • RCA: left and right line level inputs
  • Remote: phone-type jack for use with the supplied Remote Bass Control knob
  • Speaker-level Input: 4-pin jack for use with the supplied speaker-level input harness

Worked for 4 days

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)
I bought the 5 year warranty thinking this was going to be the last system I would buy for years. Installed with with the recommended wiring and capacitor. Sounded good for the first couple days nothing like 2 12" subs sound like. Day 3 started to smell funny while playing music. Day 4 popped all 3 fuses. When i tried to replace the fuses they would instantly pop before getting inserted completely even when the remote wire was disconnected. Crutchfield stood by their warranty and sent me a prepaid label to send it back and refunded me 100% of my money!! I was sure I was going to have to pay for something. Thank you crutchfield!! I will buy another custom system from you pretty sure it wont be Alpine though :)

Not bad for the price

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)
Considering it costs $800 or $900 to buy a good 500w Amp and Sub enclosure, this piece is OK. I wouldn't say great. It does not hit at all in the <30hz range, especially evident in the 'flubbing' sound from a kick drum at any real volume. I also noticed a tendency for the 6" speakers to resonate around 100-125 hz, giving a slight increase in volume when the music passes through that range. Distortion is obvious at high volume in all ranges. Best if used for folk, jazz, or classical music. I tested using Eclipse CD7000.

I read a couple reviews for the PLV-7, including the two previously posted here on Crutchfield and decided to try the sub out in my car. After getting it installed today I gotta say I completely agree with the other reviews. Man this thing can move some serious air. Very crisp, EXTREMELY loud... easily headache producing. It takes such a small amount of space that I'm still able to get to my spare tire without taking the box out of the trunk. I had two Infinity Perfect 12.1s and a PPI 1800 in my previous car... in my opinion this compact sub performs just as well if not better. With such a small footprint and the amazing efficiency you can't go wrong.

This thing BANGS!

Written By Howie Dub, Los Angeles, CA on Tuesday, November 21, 2006
I just had this installed in my X5 yesterday and WOW! It's LOUD! If you're looking for the output of 2 12" woofers without sacrificing too much space, this is the subwoofer system for you. There is also ZERO mechanical vibration coming from the box. I put it on full blast and felt no vibration at all! The only issue I found was that it doesn't handle the really low notes very well, but then again, I'm comparing it to the 2 15" Solobaric round woofers I used to have in my old car, so it naturally shouldn't handle the low notes as well. But I'm just being picky. This is a great system for anyone who would consider themselves a "basshead". Not sure how it would sound in a sedan, but it's a must for any SUV or hatchback. This system has definitely exceeded my expectations.

OMG. That is all.

Written By Inside, Aiea, HI on Sunday, October 22, 2006
Just had this baby installed in a 2006 TSX. All I have to say is WOW. Crisp. Clean. and OMG DOES IT POUND! Takes up no space what-so-ever, I am VERY please. If you plan on putting one of Alpines LAT systems in your vehicle, note the PLT-5 is ONLY for trucks with a bed, w/or w/out extended cab. Car trunks, SUV's have to go with the PLV-7 if you want bass equivelent to two 12's. I highly endorse this product.

Wow, this thing is loud!

Written By Cracker, MN on Sunday, September 24, 2006
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)
I bought this because I have very little trunk space and needed something that would produce big sound and not take up much space - the PLV7 was my solution.

Alpine's claim that this is as loud as 2 12" subs is 100% accurate! I used to have 800 watts RMS in my old car with 2 x 12" and this thing is easily as loud as my old setup. I can't even turn the remote up past 1/4 otherwise I can't see anything out of my rear view mirror. The port of the top of the box is a little loud and there's a noticeable wind noise coming from the box but that's really a minor complaint. On 3/4 volume you can hear this from 3 blocks away no problem.

I would recommend this product to anyone. It's nice not to have to deal with finding a space and mounting the amplifier. It's all in one unit which makes it very handy. Plus, when's the last time you've heard someone complain about Alpine? They make top-quality products and this is a fine example. Nice job Alpine.
