Why install component speakers?

A component speaker system gives you the best possible performance from your car audio system. A system consists of separate woofers, tweeters, and crossovers, each designed to cover one specific range of frequencies. As separate components, the woofer can move freely to deliver more powerful performance, while the tweeter can be custom-mounted in a better spot up closer to your ears, revealing a whole new world of detail. Separate crossovers are far superior to the simple filters wired into full-range speakers, so the components work together for smoother, more focused sound.

This are excellent speakers. The highs and mids are phenominal. Highs may be too much out-of-the-box but are easily adjusted with the crossovers. Cant comment on lows as that is handled by the subwoofer. Major part of an all-Alpine system, powered by the PDX-F4 along with SPR-17Cs. Subwoofer (SWR-1243D) in a custom box pushed by the PDX-M6. The PXE-H660 lets me keep the factory HU and makes the system sound even better.

awesome product

Installed these in my gmc sierra with an aftermarket headunit and was impressed with the mids and highs. Added an amp and the speakers came to life. Wonderful bass and impressively loud.

Amp please !!

Written By Suman C, Emeryville, CA on Sunday, October 03, 2010

I just tried hooking them up with 20W RMS after market receiver. They did sound terrible. But don't forget these speakers only have 87db of sensitivity. The speakers I am replacing are JBLs with 90db sensitivity and sound much better than these Alpines. Get yourself an amp w/ these SPR-17s. If you dont want an amp get some Infinity speakers with 93db sensitivity.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

These speakers are great. I bought 2 sets for my explorer. I also have the imprint tuner set,the blue tooth module and steering wheel controls. I'm using the JL HD900/5 to push these along with my JL 8W7 with a 1 ferret capacitor. This set up in my explorer is amazing. For those that say the speakers don't sound good. You have to add an amp or an after market head unit. If you don't then they will sound terrible. Tuned with a good amp or head unit they will perform. ANY SPEAKER WITH OUT ENOUGH POWER SOUNDS TERRIBLE.

Great Speakers

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Saying these speakers blow the factory speakers out to doors is an understatement. They hit the lows harder than I would have expected, almost harder than the 6x9s I have in the rear, and the highs are clear and not overpowering. There is some distortion from them as the volume goes near the upper limit, but I've been too lazy to actually adjust my amp to for these speakers, so I can't entirely blame them. As usual, I'm pleased with Alpine's products.

Alpine SPR-17S

Written By Raul, Lebanon, PA on Thursday, October 08, 2009

By far the best components i've heard in a long long time. I've been an Infinity, Kicker and even Polk audio fanatic, but after purchasing 2 sets of these Type-R components for my civic sedan, all I have to say is "SIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIICK". These components being run by a Alpine 4channel MRP- F300 amplifier by an Alpine headunit tuned to perfection sound rediculous in my vehicle. They hit so hard it seems as if I have a 10" sub in the trunk also. Dynamat made it all possible tho cuz without it it would sound dull and probably sound distorted. I have talked to different audio retailers in my area and they all said I won't get a single hint of punch or bass out of them and man were they all wrong. Tho I am a sound fanatic at home for sorround sound, I never thought just components run by an amp would sound so great.

These by far are highly recommended, placement is key for tweeters of course as I was told by a crutchfield tech (Thanks Jeremy) but by far I have no complaints at all from these. Alpine rocks the car and is the best investment in my car by far yet...

Thanks Crutchfield staff...

Alpine SPR-17S

These speakers will blow your factories out of the water, hands down. Anyone who says differently needs to amplify the speakers and tune their amp. Yes these speakers will distort when you turn them up, as will all speakers, if you don't set up a high pass filter on the amplifier. I currently have a gmx-3704 amplifier bridged pushing 100 watts RMS to each crossover with the high pass filter on and gain settings tuned in. I can turn up the head unit (cda-9884) all the way without any distortion and I swear to jesus I made my ears bleed.

As of now the cda-9884 head unit, amplifier, and these spr-17s speakers are the only upgrades to my system and I get excited everytime I have to drive somewhere because I get to listen to them.

The worst speakers I have ever owned

Written By Russell, Palmdale, CA on Monday, February 23, 2009

I am absolutely upset with the way these speakers turned out. For this price you would think they would make every song nice at least. For some songs they sound amazing. Country, alternative and blues songs sound brilliant and crisp. The second you play a hard-rock, metal or rap they get lazy. Any song that requires them to work hard, just forget about it. I have the tweeters set to -7dbs and it still sound distorted, so I thought I would also turn down the woofers with my deck. The woofers are set to -12db and yet again still distorted at the higher 3/4's of my volume bar. With the speakers turned down on an amp that should power them perfectly it sounds like garbage with hard rock, metal or rap. Unclean compared to my 100 dollar set of Infinity Kapa's, and they aren't even component speakers. This is the last time I will ever buy alpine speakers, other than their subwoofers. My type-s 10" sub sounds awesome.

Awesome Amped 6.5

Written By tower, Houston, TX on Friday, November 21, 2008

By far the best sounding 6.5" components I've used, which consisted of an Alpine CDA-9886 head and MRP-F300 4ch amp with Type-R 6x9"s as well. The size of the magnets and crossovers tells it all - these speakers are designed for power, not to just replace factory speakers. The woofers reproduce low-to-mids well, while the tweeters get loud without much scratchiness. Properly tuned, these speakers will get as loud as you want them to with no distortion, and can be staged to sound like you're in the middle of a concert. The components are considerably more expensive than the coaxial version, but they definitely sound better.

Great Speakers

Written By MOSFET67, Seattle, WA on Monday, August 25, 2008

I have used Boston Accoustics Pro Series separates, MB Quart Reference Pro Seperates, and JL VR Series separates. However, these are the best sounding speakers I have ever heard. But they are quite ineffcient and require LOTS of power. I have them bi-amped: the midbass drivers are being driven by a vintage Rockford Fosgate 225.2 (112.5 RMS X 2, 550 watts maximum) and the tweeters are being driven by a 50 watt X 2 RMS amp.

I have heard some complain about these speakers distorting and I would say to ALL OF THOSE PEOPLE you are not using enough power. I have cranked my Alpine HU to ear-bleeding volumes and have yet to hear an ounce of distortion. Basically, these speakers are incredible. But you MUST have TONS of power to drive them. I would NEVER recommend replacing stock speakers and using any kind of (stock or aftermarket) head unit to drive them. When selecting an amp to drive them, I would certainly not use any amp less than 100 watts X 2 RMS. 150 watts X 2 RMS (600 watts max) would be perfect.

For all of you who have bought these and are not satisfied (especially if you are hearing distortion), GET A POWERFUL AMP!! Once you do, you will posses the most powerful 6.5" drivers you have ever heard. Until I heard these speakers, I did not think it was possible to get THIS MUCH BASS from a 6.5" driver. The tweeters sound WONDERFUL as well.

Great Value for the Price

Written By chaz, Kansas on Sunday, August 10, 2008

I just bought four of these to replace the factory speakers in a 94 Saturn SL 2.

The installation was great with the free help and installation guide from Crutchfield, and it improved the sound considerably. You cannot find anything close for the price to install in your car. These have a great Bass response from the factory radio, and it seems that the top end is really clean with the 2 way tweeters.

I was somewhat skeptical at first, but feel we got a great value for this price and manufacturer.

Written By Eric, California on Thursday, May 15, 2008

I bought these speakers to replace the stock ones in my 1997 Toyota 4Runner and I must say that I am kind of disappointed. I had them professionally installed with dampener with a set of SPR-13C speakers in the rear doors. The stock speakers sounded just as good if not better. These offer a bit more bass but a lot more distortion. I use a 600 watt 4 channel amplifier to power both front and back speakers. They put out decent volume but if I turn it up, they have a hard time producing clear bass. Maybe I need to check the crossovers and amp settings but as of right now I can say for sure that I am not too satisfied about spending the money to upgrade from stocks.

Excellent Speaker

Written By Jonathan, Los Angeles, CA on Tuesday, April 08, 2008

Placed these in my '01 Honda Accord. The woofers fit nicely with a 1/2" spacer. I cut holes for the tweeter just above the woofers, since the factory location on the dashboard for the tweeters wasn't optimal.

Compared to the Polk Momo's I had in my last car, these are excellent speakers. The sound if very natural, and there are no problems with the volume.

My only complaint would be the tweeters: at first, they were ear-bleedingly bright. But the crossover has a jumper that allows you to attenuate the tweeter in -2db increments down to -8db. Once they were at -8db, the sound evened out and they sound like they should.

Clear sound

Written By Kyle, Spirit Lake, IA on Tuesday, April 01, 2008

I installed these in a 2001 silverado and they are better than factory thats
for sure. The only thing i don't like is when you turn em up pretty far to like
a jam out they get crackly and sound weird...... idk whats wrong but i
figured i would have eliminated the cackling sound when i got these. I
dont see how any one could amp them because it seems the truck itself
over powers them. my head unit is a clarion DXZ 725, its 50W by 4 so thats
nothing rediculous......

Excellent Speaker

Written By Chi, Charleston, WV on Tuesday, February 19, 2008

I installed these speakers in an 07 Toyota Tundra and they're powered by a 5-channel Eclipse amp at only 50 watts RMS. The sound is excellent. I had the previous generation speaker in a Nissan Titan and the tweeters were so bright they were piercing.

Love them

Written By Keith, IA on Wednesday, November 07, 2007

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

When I switched out the speakers in my 06 G6 I went through 2 other aftermarket brands but wasn't happy. On my third try I went with these and I love them. The tweeters aren't too bright, can be tuned down if needed, and blend in appropriately with the woofer. The woofer has plenty of thump but is still controlled. I'm driving them with a sony amp @ 75W per set/side and the speakers play nice well past what my ears can handle.

Many thanks to Crutchfield and their great service as it took me 3 attempts to get this one right.

Alpine SPR-17S

Written By mihonkenji, KL on Friday, November 02, 2007

Other than what mentioned on reviews above, here's few other points:

The new Type R tweeters are not as sharp as the previous SPR-17LS's tweeters, an improvement over the previous model (that some complaint the tweeters of previous SPR-17LS tweeters being too sharp).

Might need to consider installing the tweeters on the A-pillar as there are no plastic stand provided for the little tweeters. The actual woofer's cover design look much better than the photo shown.

Excellent speakers. Good value for money!

Excellent Upgrade!

Written By Robb, Utah on Wednesday, October 31, 2007

I tried to save $50 by running JBL components instead of these. What a mistake. For $50 there's no comparison; these are by far superior. Respectable bass, strong mid-range, and manageable high-range thanks to a very adjustable set of crossovers. In this price range, I believe these to be the best components available.

Written By Andy, Fairbanks, AK on Thursday, August 16, 2007

I put these in my Toyota Tundra Access Cab to replace the stock component set and they sound excellent. I was limited on what would fit in my truck due to the mounting depth in front doors. I tried a set of the Polk DB6500s and they did not cut it. I did a lot of searching around for what would fit and these are probably the best I could find. I am running 100 watts per channel and they sound great. No distortion and they get loud. I need to dynamat the doors to really crank to volume though. Very good mid bass. Listening to music with these are a pleasure. I am putting in a q-logic custom enclosure for subs soon to fill out the system and I should be set.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I just finished installing this in my 99 Silverado. Night and Day difference between this and stock. Excellent response from these speakers with both hi and low frequencies. I would highly recommend these speakers to anyone looking to upgrade their existing speakers, well worth the money spent.

i have a set of the 2006 model R series components which are only 75 rms but they are still amazing and these are probably even better... note that type Rs are big and heavy (a good sign) but worth everything it takes to stuff em in there
if you are looking for bass out of your door speakers these can do the job and with accuracy. these things can get real loud and i dont even have them amped yet. cant wait to see how the 4 channel alpine putting out 70 rms sounds

Woofers: The Alpine Type-R series component speakers feature woofer cones made of hybrid layered-pulp with mica coating for great bass response. For durability and superior linearity, the woofers have rubber surrounds.

Motor Structure: The High-performance Linear Drive Motor structure features a large magnet that is almost as big as the voice coil diameter. Its dual radial magnet and twin gap, combined with a square, edge-wound voice coil, gives the diaphragm linear movement over a much greater range. This design allows the speaker to be faithful to the input signal even during high excursion, for accurate musical reproduction and deep bass.

Adapter Rings: The SPR-17S component speakers come with two pairs of adapter rings. One set of rings allows you to install the woofers in 3-hole 6-3/4" GM/Chrysler installations or 3-hole 6-1/2" installations. The other set of rings will adapt the woofers for 6"x8" openings.

Tweeters: The SPR-17S component speakers are equipped with 1" (25mm) silk ring-dome tweeters for greater detail and bright, crisp highs.

Tweeter Mounting Options: The tweeters come installed in a swiveling flush-mount cup. You can also install the tweeters in a stealth mount when it will be hidden behind a factory grille. The stealth mount can be used as a top mount or a bottom mount.

Tweeter Mounting Dimensions:

  Flush Mount Stealth Mount
Top Mount Bottom Mount
Mounting Depth 0.655" 0" 0.968"
Mounting Height 0.401" 0.774" N/A
Cutout Diameter 2.003" N/A N/A
Frame Diameter 2.27" 2.813" x 1.714" 2.813" x 1.714"

Two-way Crossovers: The SPR-17S component speakers come with 2-way external crossover networks. The crossover features a 6dB/octave low pass filter for the woofers, and a 12dB/per octave high pass filter for the tweeters.

Tweeter Attenuation: The crossover has a 7-level tweeter adjustment to allow you to precisely tune your high frequencies. Using the supplied jumpers, you can select 0dB (no attenuation), or 6 levels of attenuation: -3dB, -4dB, -5dB, -6dB, -7dB and -8dB.

Input/Output Connections: The crossover features gold-plated screw terminals for the amplifier inputs and the woofer and tweeter outputs. The screw terminals are hidden by the crossover cover.

Crossover Mounting: There are two holes in the base of each crossover for the two mounting screws. Each crossover comes with flat speed clips.
