About the Alpine SPR-50

Buck Pomerantz

Exceptional performance, even at high volume

Alpine Authorized Online Dealer

Like it loud? Alpine designed their Type-R speakers for people who like to turn it up. They'll deliver big, dynamic sound with plenty of bass, and they'll handle lots of volume. They'll work great with your car stereo, but they really come into their own when you power them with an outboard amp.

Alpine SPR-50

Fine-tuned for clarity and balance

The SPR-50 5-1/4" speakers feature multi-layer hybrid fiber woofer cones that deliver really strong bass response. Alpine's adapted the specially ridged surround, originally developed for their subs, to these speakers, so you get consistent, extended cone movement that pushes a lot of air. The silk tweeters produce smooth highs that bring out your music's detail and depth with no shrillness. Alpine mounts an EQ ring in front of the tweeters to help disperse the highs for a larger listening "sweet spot" in your ride. Plus, you can swivel the tweeters to focus the sound better for your seating position.

Smaller, stronger neodymium magnets

Alpine uses powerful neodymium magnets which are much smaller than traditional magnets, so the SPR-50's high-density polymer frames will fit into more places than most 5-1/4" speakers. Type-R speakers have earned their reputation in the past as the masters of "crank it to the max," but Alpine has really kicked the performance factor of the latest models up a notch or two.

Features

Woofers: The Alpine Type-R series coaxial speakers feature multi-layered hybrid fiber woofer cones. For durability and superior linearity, the woofers use rubber surrounds.

HAMR Surround: Type-R speakers use Alpine's multi roll HAMR surround (patent pending), a technology developed for Alpine subwoofers that maintains control and stability at higher volume levels. HAMR surround combines increased cone area and long linear cone excursion for deep, powerful bass response.

Swiveling Tweeters: The speakers are equipped with 1" (25mm) silk dome tweeters. Alpine's EQ Ring improves the tweeter's dispersion characteristics, providing excellent off-axis response. You can also tilt the tweeters up to 15° to focus the sound where it should be, not pointed at your feet.

Neodymium Magnet: The new smaller neodymium magnet on the Type-R series allows the speaker dimensions to be smaller, making them easier to install in a wide variety of vehicles. They are also lighter than designs using standard magnet technology.

HD Polymer Frame: The new Type-R speakers use a revolutionary HD Polymer frame, making the speaker stronger, lighter, and easier to install.

Q
I have a 2019 ram rebel with 5.0" screen. I'm trying to upgrade the from speakers. Says this product won't fit but it's all the same specs. Will this fit?

A
I put these in the rear of my 96 Mercury cougar because it also said that they will not fit the front doors, the reason being is that the speakers are deeper than normal, and I believe it would interfere with the window/ window hardware.

Q
Why won't these speakers work as replacements for 2005 Honda Civic LX Sedan Rear Speakers? The 2001-2005 Honda Civic Sedan Guide on Crutchfield says 5-1/4" Speakers are an easy fit with a bracket, but when I click on these speakers it says "will NOT fit your vehicle." Anybody know why?

Q
How would these speakers do in a fairing on my Harley? Weather and vibration?

A
I have them in my Kenworth Semi-truck and they work fine. They're definitely exposed to road vibrations and bumps etc. Weather I can't answer totally because mine aren't ever exposed to moisture. but heat and cold don't seem to be a problem.
greg  Apr 20, 2016
A
Not sure about the fairing. I have them the rear speaker pods on my Harley Ultra & they sound good - no noticeable vibration. I try not to let them get too wet since they are not weatherproof. However, I don't think an occasional rain shower should be a problem. In the fairing they will have even less exposure to the elements so I think they should hold up fine.

Q
How would you describe the sound of the tweeters? More of a smooth sound or more of a crisp, highly detailed sound.
dsw1204  Dec 20, 2015

A
I would say more smooth than crisp and that's what I was looking for. That said I find today's speakers to be more crisp and detailed by design, so that characteristic exists in the Alpine's along with the ability to smooth it out to personal preference. I have put 2 pair of Alpine's in 2 older model vehicles in the past 2 years and have been very pleased.
nathaniel  Dec 23, 2015
A
Crisp and detailed. If you can mount the tweeter satelite a distance away from the primary speaker, closer to your ear, spacing them apart will give you much better sound.
