Alpine SPR-60

Overview

Our take on the Alpine SPR-60

Exceptional performance, even at high volume

Alpine Authorized Online Dealer

Like it loud? Alpine designed their Type-R speakers for people who like to turn it up. They'll deliver big, dynamic sound with plenty of bass, and they'll handle lots of volume. They'll work great with your car stereo, but they really come into their own when you power them with an outboard amp.

Alpine SPR-60

Fine-tuned for clarity and balance

The SPR-60 6-3/4" speakers feature multi-layer hybrid fiber woofer cones that deliver really strong bass response. Alpine's adapted the specially ridged surround, originally developed for their subs, to these speakers, so you get consistent, extended cone movement that pushes a lot of air. The silk tweeters produce smooth highs that bring out your music's detail and depth with no shrillness. Alpine mounts an EQ ring in front of the tweeters to help disperse the highs for a larger listening "sweet spot" in your ride. Plus, you can swivel the tweeters to focus the sound better for your seating position.

Smaller, stronger neodymium magnets

Alpine uses powerful neodymium magnets which are much smaller than traditional magnets, so the SPR-60's high-density polymer frames will fit into more places than most 6-3/4" speakers. Type-R speakers have earned their reputation in the past as the masters of "crank it to the max," but Alpine has really kicked the performance factor of the latest models up a notch or two.

Note: Alpine describes this model as a 6-1/2" speaker. Most manufacturers designate this same frame size as a 6-3/4" speaker. For simplicity's sake we list it as a 6-3/4" speaker.

Priced per pair
Note: Sorry, Crutchfield cannot ship Alpine products to Guam or Puerto Rico.

Installed the speakers after I had the front set installed, all Alpine R series now. Love listening to music now. Needed to order mounts, speakers just won't line up right without them.

Average Speakers

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Have SPR's in front and rear. Biggest complaint is that they terribly inefficient @ 90db and take a lot of power to make them loud. I have a JBL, 75 watt x 4 channel amp and have to turn the gains at 2/3 just to hear moderate volume. Also, they aren't as bright, crisp and detailed like infinity kappa's. If enclosed they might sound half way descent but who encloses speakers in their doors? Don't buy these mediocre speakers.

Pros: Will fit in tight locations.

Cons: Too inefficient. Requires a lot of power. Distortion in mid range at full volume. No detail. Not impressive enough to be high end.

I purchased these speakers through a local shop and must say that I am more than satisfied. I was a little skeptical at first but after the owner explained that alpine obtained a well known audio engineer a few years back they have been extremely focused on delivering truly exceptional sound out of their products, I figured I'd try them. I was previously a fan of Boston acoustics, infinity, and polk to name a few. I have these powered by an alpine 90w rms amp and these are the cleanest, loudest speakers I have heard for their size. I had to use kicker ks speakers in the back, due to limited space, and what a difference. The kickers sound terrible compared to the alpines at loud volume. I was shocked as I've used kicker before. Never again. As long as alpine keep delivering speakers like this I will only use their products. I mounted them in the front doors of a 2014 Honda civic sedan. Crutchfield says they won't fit?

Pros: Excellent sound

Cons: Power hungry

Fantastic Speakers

Written by: Zach S. from Washington on April 21, 2015

I got these as a gift, although I pretty much told the gifter they were what I wanted. I have run several sets of Alpines over the years and keep going back for good reason. As most of the other reviewers have mentioned, these are a fantastic speaker. The only poor reviews are from people who are starving them of power. You can't run these off a head unit and expect anything out of them. If you can't give them at least 75-80 watts RMS then don't bother. These are big boy speakers and need big boy power. Just because you spend 600 bucks on a new head unit doesn't mean you can run these speakers. I am giving 4 of them 100 watts RMS class AB power and they sound as good or better than my old Boston Accoustic Rallye 6x9's. Anyone who says they are a bad speaker clearly has not been giving them the juice they need.

Pros: durable, massive power handling, stylish.

Cons: Makes my ears bleed from deafening, crystal clear sound.

Installed these in a Harley Street Glide. I bought the Focal fd 2.350 to drive them. They were the only 6.5" 2 way speakers I could find that were rated to handle the rms of the amp. So far all I can say is that they are very loud. I have some adjusting to do to the amp and EQ. You're not going to get a great deal of bass out of these but I think they'll sound great on a motorcycle at highway speeds. If I were to put them in a vehicle I would want to pair them with a good subwoofer. The tech person I spoke with was very helpful.

Pros: Volume is great.

Cons: lacks bass

What A Joke!

I wish there was a half star rating because that would still be generous. I see this review as an opportunity to save some people money and hassle before they make a huge mistake. These are so bad I dont know where to start. Listen most importantly dont buy these off reviews! IDK what people hear but clearly they havent heard a quality speaker. On forums people warned me to stay away from aline mids and I didnt listen to them and should have. My doors are deadened completely and these were getting 50rms each. I tried evey way possible to make them sound good. they have a very hollow thin sound to them. and midbass none no midbass. im not talking about low end im talking about midbass which doesnt exist. I know there are people saying these are amazing. But if you know about car audio and have had alot of speakers these will let you down very hard. I had a cheap set of kicker c series that blew these away in evey category and a high end set of mb quarts that also blew them away. This is the worst spesker Ive ever heard in my life. I only hope this reaches some people and saves them some money and time. Not to mention the volume at the same level was lower than every speaker we compared these to much much lower.

Pros: Look Nice

Cons: No Bass No Mids No Volume No Anything Pure Junk!!

2006 Volkswagen Jetta
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Replaced stock (but premium) Monsoon sound system in 2006 JettaTDI. Crutchfield provided wrong mounting bracket so I had to purchase a speaker adapter kit from local audio store. The Jetta has for lack of a better description a sound tube for the woofer component speaker. The spacer is required to get the speaker to extend far enough into the tube to provide decent sound, as well as clear the interior of the door for the power window. Grill design of the door does not allow you to cut it out to put the alpine speaker cover in, so you're left with a less than optimal grill design for an excellent sounding speaker. Speaker quality is superb, and it is mated with pioneers AVH top-of-the-line audio system. I only replaced the rear woofer, leaving all of the other components in place, but wow what a difference. The alpine speaker is so efficient from stock that I had to move fader placement forward four steps to provide proper balance. Great bass and outstanding mid range.

Pros: Fantastic sound quality

Cons: Some of that sound quality is wasted as the door grill design cannot be modified.

Great Speakers

Written by: Harley Rider from Dallas, Texas on August 31, 2014

I've been an devoted Harley rider for many years and I've either ridden Ultra Classics or Street Glides. With either one, it has always been a must to change out the speakers on these bikes. The Alpine SPR-60 6.5 speakers have proven to be a good investment. They are a little pricy but well worth the money. I have used 2ohms and 4 ohms systems in the past and found that the 4 ohms systems seam to sound clearer and provide more bang for the buck. I used Arc Audio adapter rings, a Hawg Wired amp and a set of Alpine speakers on my latest project. Talk about a perfect match up. The sound is incredible and clear at high speeds. The speakers are rated a 2-100 RMS and I run about 100 watts through each of them. This is truly a loud speaker with clarity. So far, no problems running them in inclement weather. If your wanting to upgrade the stereo on your Harley cruiser, I highly recommend these speakers. You will need an amp as stock Harley systems are 2 ohms and these are 4 ohms speakers. Happy motoring and ride safe.

Pros: Durable loud speaker that lives up to it's name.

Cons: A little pricy, connectors are small and fragile. Had to solder the wires to the connectors.

In my previous installs, I had always like Boston Acoustics, but since they stopped making car speakers, I decided to go with these Alpine Type R's. The sound quality of them is night and day compared to stock speakers and they're very well constructed. I can't wait to hear how good they sound when I add on my PDX-V9 amp.

Pros: Great clarity and some bass out of these speakers. I'll have a sub in shortly though as I didn't get them for their bass.

Cons: None really that I've noticed yet.

Written by: R.D. from Escondido ca. on September 13, 2013

These were installed in the front kick panels of an early ford bronco, powered by an alpine head unit and alpine 4ch amp. In the back seat area are a pair of cheap separates. The separates have a nice crisp high end where the alpines are very mid range and fail in comparison. Removing these alpines and replacing them with Infinity separates.

Pros: Lacking bright higher hertz, these would be great rear deck speakers.

Cons: Too much mid range!

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I have to admit that when my advisor Troy recommended these speakers, I was skeptical. The magnet looked way too small. But these were the largest speakers that I could get for the small openings in my rear deck and I needed something that could hold its own. I have to say that I was pleasantly surprised! They have a very nice tight sound and the bass that they can handle is impressive. I would tell anyone who needs a lot of speaker for a small opening or a great set of mids to give these a shot. You WILL be impressed.

Pros: Tight bass and ultra crisp highs. More than you would expect from a speaker of this size. Handles plenty of power.

Cons: None that I have found so far. Extremely satisfied.

2000 Toyota Corolla
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

To start with, I visited several stores and sound tested many speakers and was surprised to find that these Alpine speakers were consistently of of the few best. Others in the same price range often times sounded pretty awful. I installed these with the Alpine CDE-HD138BT CD Receiver. I briefly tested them with a Toyota stock receiver and was not impressed with the sound (lower power, cheap receiver.) But with the sound with the CDE-HD138BT was night and day. I mention this because you may not get the results you're looking for i you're merely upgrading the speakers and keeping the stock receiver. It all depends. With the Alpine CDE-HD138BT these speakers sound pretty amazing. I am running with the receiver's power, no amp, but it's clear that with more power these speakers would sound better. Without the amp they sound best at higher volumes but the bass falls off at lower volumes. I'm considering getting, at minimum the Alpine KTP-445U "Power Pack" Amp. Highs, mids, and lows are all reproduced with amazing accuracy. They don't have strong bass, at least not without an amp, but I really didn't expect much more from a 6-3/4" 2-way speaker. There is no distortion and the highs are so clear that I can easily tell the difference in sound quality between lower an higher bit rate MP3s, how bad Satellite radio quality is, and how amazing CDs and high bit rate MP3s can sound. I'm very satisfied with these speakers.

Pros: Amazingly clear highs and mids.

Cons: Weak bass at low volumes without an amp.

New vechicles need an external amp

Written by: rcwithlime from Rochester Ny on June 7, 2012

I installed 2 of these with a hight powered head unit and they were great. That vehicle was sold, as the speakers removed and put into a new Silverado. Bites the big one to be sure. The factory unit cannot come close to powering these speakers. Now have a much degraded sound, actually is pathetic. BUT, I am adding an external amp and totally expect to receive even better sound than before. Just mentioning this for those who read from some how speakers with heavier magnets sound so bad with factory head units. It is because the std sterio's output very little power @ 2v, to save $. So stock speakers have tiny magnets. It takes power to push the speaker against a large magnet. Does not mean you have to be loud, just to have the power there. This is where the DB range comes in when you look to purchase speakers. Do not buy more than you need.

Cons:

Awesome!!!

Had a pair of the Alpine SPR 17c's which sounded great! However one went bad and I bought these to replace the old set. WOW! You would never think you would get the quality sound out of speakers having such a small magnets and being so light. These things are AWESOME!!! Blow away SPR-17's. Clarity was amazing even cranked way up! These speakers need some power to really rock so make sure you use an amp. These were installed in my 93 toyota mr2 turbo.

Pros: light weight, shallower mounting depth, better overall sound quality compaired to last years model.

Cons: nothing. These are great.

Amazing

Had Alpine factory speakers in my previous car (Dodge) and they were awesome, so I immediately looked at Alpine for the new car. These speakers don't disappoint. Many people suggest using an amp with them. I'm only using my head unit, didn't want to go through the extra work of installing an amp. It's pretty loud as things are, but I would love to hear these speakers at full power with an amp. I can't believe the amount of bass from these tiny things. Very happy overall. Great price, quality speaker, sounds excellent.

Pros: Great sound, easy to install.

Installed in my 2012 Scion tC to replaced OEM and they sound amazing. Highs are more clear and the bass produced from just the stock deck is amazing. I would recommend getting these.

Written by: K Fitz from Columbia, SC on August 9, 2011

First, don't expect to be blow away by Alpines new Type-R's if you're running a factory deck or not supplying any after market power to them. In order for these bad boys to impress, put AT LEAST 50W to em. When I hooked them up to 80W and place in my '07 Grand Cherokee Rear Doors the cab finally gave me that filled sound and balance. Not to mention the quality of the build is incredible for just a 2way 6.5"..... I would not hesitate to recommend these 2ways to anyone using aftermarket power, but if you're down in the 10-12W RMS.....you'll be spending money on something you won't be able to hear.

Features

Woofers: The Alpine Type-R series coaxial speakers feature multi-layered hybrid fiber woofer cones. For durability and superior linearity, the woofers use rubber surrounds.

HAMR Surround: Type-R speakers use Alpine's multi roll HAMR surround (patent pending), a technology developed for Alpine subwoofers that maintains control and stability at higher volume levels. HAMR surround combines increased cone area and long linear cone excursion for deep, powerful bass response.

Swiveling Tweeters: The speakers are equipped with 1" (25mm) silk dome tweeters. Alpine's EQ Ring improves the tweeter's dispersion characteristics, providing excellent off-axis response. You can also tilt the tweeters up to 15° to focus the sound where it should be, not pointed at your feet.

Neodymium Magnet: The new smaller neodymium magnet on the Type-R series allows the speaker dimensions to be smaller, making them easier to install in a wide variety of vehicles. They are also lighter than designs using standard magnet technology.

HD Polymer Frame: The new Type-R speakers use a revolutionary HD Polymer frame, making the speaker stronger, lighter, and easier to install.

Mounting: Out of the box the SPR-60 is a 6-3/4" speaker. Using the included brackets they are also compatible with standard 6-1/2" applications, Ford 6-1/2" 4-hole applications, and select non-standard GM and Chrysler 6-3/4" applications. Please confirm fit using the Crutchfield Vehicle Selector.
