Our take on the Alpine SPR-68

Exceptional performance, even at high volume

Alpine Authorized Online Dealer

Like it loud? Alpine designed their Type-R speakers for people who like to turn it up. They'll deliver big, dynamic sound with plenty of bass, and they'll handle lots of volume. They'll work great with your car stereo, but they really come into their own when you power them with an outboard amp.

Fine-tuned for clarity and balance

The Type-R SPR-68 6"x8" speakers feature multi-layer hybrid fiber woofers that deliver really strong bass response. Alpine's adapted the specially ridged surround, originally developed for their subs, to these speakers, so you get consistent, extended cone movement that pushes a lot of air. The silk tweeters use a superior ring-dome design to produce smooth highs that bring out your music's detail and depth with no shrillness, plus they swivel to focus the sound better for your seating position.

Smaller, stronger neodymium magnets

Alpine uses powerful neodymium magnets which are much smaller than traditional magnets, so the SPR-68's high-density polymer frames will fit into more places than most 6"x8" speakers. Type-R speakers have earned their reputation in the past as the masters of "crank it to the max," but Alpine has really kicked the performance factor of the latest models up a notch or two.

Very Nice Mids

Written by: AudioPhilo from Oregon on March 15, 2015

One of the factory mids in my 04 Explorer (Eddie Bauer) went out, so I figured I would replace all 4 door speakers the same day. I initially bought 4 Fosgate T-1682's, installed the front set no problem (Crutchfield says they won't fit up front but they did fit in my rig). However the Fosgates will not fit in the rear doors, so I returned one set and got a pair of Alpine SPR-68's for the rear. The head unit is an Alpine CDA-117, and it will run these OK at 18w RMS, however with an Alpine SWR-12D4 running off a 500w mono-block in the rear it became obvious real quick that these were going to need more juice to keep up. So I went back to the stereo store and picked up an Alpine PDR-V75 amplifier (they didn't carry the 4 channel PDR-F50). A few hours later I had it all installed and, wow these puppies came ALIVE! Took ~20 minutes to get everything dialed in just right, but once done it sounds amazing. My system used to have a dead spot between about 90-180Hz, not anymore. These mids put out clean, LOUD audio when supplied with the proper power. With the mid amp gain set at half way it gets uncomfortably loud way before it distorts. These do not pump lower tones as well as the Fosgates, but they do a really nice job for where they need to fit (head unit is set for 80Hz cutoff to the mids). Have tested with Bass305, Rammstein, Enya, new popular music everything sounds awesome!

Pros: Fits in tight spaces and sounds good. Purely awesome audio at anything above ~ 140Hz.

Cons: Little weak between ~ 80 to 120Hz. Spendy.

2006 Lincoln LS
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I am a firm believer in you get what you pay for. There are better speakers out there, but for this price range I am very happy with them. Upgraded my 2006 Lincoln LS door speakers to these from stock. Difference is night and day. Almost sounds like I have a sub at times. I run them with a Pioneer 7000 NEX. Planning on adding a sub and amps later. As for the construction of the speakers they are definitely good quality.

Pros: Good looking and sounding speakers for a decent price, especially with the current deal.

Cons: Component speakers are better

Very Nice!

Great sounding speakers. I own a 2006 Ford F-350 and these speakers fit in the front and rear of my truck. Even though Crutchfield says they only fit in the rear locations.

Pros: Speakers sound great with my Alpine digital media head unit and Alpine power pack.

Cons: No cons. Awesome speakers.

Clean and clear at all volume levels

Written by: dnut from Ann Arbor, MI on June 14, 2014

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

In the end, I went with these for the front door on the new 2014 Mustang instead of component speakers because I did not feel like the extra step of making holes for the tweeter mounts on an already complex install - I put in a whole new audio system along with these speakers. So far, I am not disappointed - these give clear, clean sound no matter what I throw at them - Metal, pop, symphonic metal or opera style vocals. I matched them with an Alpine PDX-V9 - it is a good match for power and quality.

Pros: - Clean, clear sound at all levels. - Highs are awesome - not sorry I skipped the component system.

Cons: - There was an extra screw tab that had to be cut off to fit in the Ford OEM enclosure in the door. No problem, other than I felt I was keeping them even before I heard them after going "snip"!

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Good sound quality feels like your in a wall of sound with very little gain in the volume control in my Ford F150 super crew stock head unit, very simple straight forward install. Find myself being able to pick out individual instruments due to clarity. Only compliant twice now after being installed for a few weeks the driver side speaker cut out. It came on a few minutes later but I have no idea why it happened. All connections are tight. Pervious speakers did not have same issue.

Pros: Great sound quality

Cons: Long term reliability unknown

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I bought two sets of these for my 2007 Ford F150 Super Crew. These fit the front and rear doors, but you will have to modify the front set to get them into their enclosure. The two tabs will have to be cut off of each speaker before they will fit. It's not necessary to do this to the rear set, as they are mounted flush. The harnesses that Crutchfield sends with these are a little tricky to connect and will push out the wires if you are not careful. I bent the pins in a little after pushing them out of the bottom twice and they connected properly after that. They are a big improvement over the stock speakers and the music comes out crisp and clear. Very happy with these speakers so far.

Pros: Build quality, sound clarity.

Cons: Unexpected modification.

Thumbs Up!!!!!!

Wow what a difference. Installed into a 2013 F-150 in the front and 5 1/4's in the back with a 4/300 Rockford amp and stock deck. The type R's are amazing. Dollar for dollar best speakers on the market 4 sure. If u want added bass then drop in a type R 10" woofer all u need is 1 of these bad boys with the right amp and the Pro's at Crutchfied make it simple, including hardware for no cost w/ purchase. Thanks again Crutchfied.

Pros: Everything

Great in 2006 Ford Freestar

Written by: DavidF from MD on March 21, 2013

Great sound for just popping in to existing 6x8 factory speaker mounts in front doors, rear panels. Sometimes the mid-range vocals sound a bit boomy, probably due to the lack of a decent enclosure. Powering these via a 4-way Alpine MRX-F65 (4x110WRMS D amp) under the front seat and StreetWires ZeroNoise 5 ZN5K-04 speaker wires and a 4AWG power cable kit. Using new head unit Pioneer DEH-X9500BHS (6x 4V RCA). The wires are probably a bit of overkill for 100Wx4, but this way I ensure they are not a weak link. Got this as a combined Christmas 2012 gift; headed for a combined spring birthday gift of a Kicker PES10C sealed/powered sub. Will be able to unplug/remove the sub whenever I need the space or don't want to have it in the car; the system will still sound good without it. Not sure I found it documented anywhere, but the tweeter angle can be adjusted a bit on these. Crutchfield "fits with alteration" flag on these for this car, but I needed no mods, unless you count needing to use the free Crutchfield-supplied wire harness/adapter (I connected directly from amp to speaker with heavy wire & spades).

Pros: Good quality speakers, tweeters can be directed, good power handling for 6x8, good flat freqency range.

Cons: Pricey

2007 Ford Edge
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Was looking for a new set of speakers to replace the originals in my Edge, as the sound quality was quite poor. I decided on the SR68 as the specs sounded good and the price was reasonable. The sound difference is unbelievable! These speakers are simply awesome. My music has come alive and I've got the stereo on every time I'm in the car now. Installation was a snap, they fit perfectly into the stock mounting holes. Crutchfield included everything I needed to install them, and the instructions were simple step by step, and very easy to follow.

Pros: Ease of installation, sound quality, good price

Cons: none at this time

They're okay

Written by: DRobinson784 from Wells, Me on August 9, 2012

Installed 4 of these in my 2012 F150 Super Cab amped with the rockford fosgate pbr300x4, pushes 84 watts per speaker. I had 6x9's years ago in a car and loved them, thought 6x8's couldnt be much different...These dont have near the bass as the 6x9's did. People thought I had a sub with the 6x9's. These sound a step above the stock but still lack even decent bass response. My wifes maxima has the bose system, id be happy with the sound of that, but you wont get it with these. Def going to add a small sub under the rear seat to pick up the slack. Dont get me wrong these sound very clear, but for me adding a small sub would have done the trick.

Pros: Good clear sound

Cons: lack bass, pricey

Paired these with the Alpine PDX-F4, what a great combo. So much louder and clearer than factory speakers. I left the factory sub in but what a difference in bass. These will be recommended to anyone I know looking for speakers.

Pros: Slim design, perfect fit, and killer sound.

Woofers: The Alpine Type-R series coaxial speakers feature multi-layered hybrid fiber woofer cones. For durability and superior linearity, the woofers use rubber surrounds.

HAMR Surround: Type-R speakers use Alpine's multi roll HAMR surround (patent pending), a technology developed for Alpine subwoofers that maintains control and stability at higher volume levels. HAMR surround combines increased cone area and long linear cone excursion for deep, powerful bass response.

Swiveling Tweeters: The speakers are equipped with 1" (25mm) silk dome tweeters. Alpine's EQ Ring improves the tweeter's dispersion characteristics, providing excellent off-axis response. You can also tilt the tweeters up to 15° to focus the sound where it should be, not pointed at your feet.

Neodymium Magnet: The new smaller neodymium magnet on the Type-R series allows the speaker dimensions to be smaller, making them easier to install in a wide variety of vehicles. They are also lighter than designs using standard magnet technology.

HD Polymer Frame: The new Type-R speakers use a revolutionary HD Polymer frame, making the speaker stronger, lighter, and easier to install.

Mounting: The SPR-68 speakers fit both 6x8 and 5x7 applications. Please confirm fit using the Crutchfield Vehicle Selector.
