Woofers

Layered Hybrid Fiber Cones: Each Layered Hybrid Fiber cone consists of three different layers. The middle layer is constructed of paper. A natural mica compound is layered on the front of the paper diaphragm for good sound separation and clear music reproduction. The use of a highly rigid material on the back of the paper diaphragm minimizes noise, resulting in powerful bass and natural midrange.

Air-injected Rubber Surrounds: For a smoother response and improved durability, the woofers use air-injected rubber surrounds.

Linear Drive Magnet Design: The new magnetic circuit provides linear cone motion and a wide dynamic range.

Wave Guides: The wave guides align the sound waves coming from each cone for excellent music reproduction.

Adapter Rings: The supplied adapter rings allow the speakers to be installed in a standard 6-1/2" opening or an oversized GM/Chrysler 6-1/2" opening. The adapter rings have tabs that must be broken off when the speakers are mounted in a standard 6-1/2" opening.

OEM Spacer Rings: In select Honda vehicles, the supplied OEM spacer rings can be used to replace the factory mounting cups.

Tweeters

Soft Dome Tweeters: Each tweeter uses a 1" textile dome tweeter for smooth, clear highs.

Tweeter Mounting Options: The tweeters may be flush, swivel angle, or fixed angle mounted. The tweeters swivel in the flush and swivel angle housings, so you can control the direction of your high frequencies.

Tweeter Mounting Dimensions:

Flush Mount (swivel) Swivel Angle Mount Fixed Angle Mount
Mounting Depth 1.809" 0.672" (screw depth) 0.668" (screw depth)
Mounting Height 0.793" 1.891" 1.358"
Cutout Diameter 1.939" N/A N/A
Frame Diameter 2.237" 1.896" 1.862"

Crossovers

Selectable Tweeter Output Level: Each crossover allows you to select the tweeter output level according to system requirements and personal preference. The tweeter level may be set to "-6 dB", "-3 dB" or "0 dB".

Tweeter Protection: A tweeter protection circuit diverts excessive power away from the tweeters.

2-Way Crossovers: The crossovers feature a 12 dB/octave high-pass network for the tweeters and a 6 dB/octave low-pass network for the woofers.

Input/Output Connections: The crossover inputs and outputs are gold-plated screw terminals.

Mounting: There are two mounting holes in the base of each crossover.

Crossover Dimensions: L=4.673", W=2.563", H=1.324"

GREAT SOUND

Written By BenzMan, Mobile, AL on Thursday, October 19, 2006

They sound awesome and play the the highs good enough to overcome my two JL AUDIO 12's... The speaker is really deep so make sure it fits i had to do some MAJOR modifications to get it to fit but when i did they slammed. I love them.

Great Speakers

Written By Schagg, Upstate, South Carolina on Thursday, July 13, 2006

These speakers really bring music to life. The highs can be a little harsh at first but with a little tuning on the HU you can get amazing sound. They can handle low bass but not too low otherwise they distort the sound. I cut the frequency off at 50hz and they seem to do great especially for 6.5 inch woofers. At first I installed these with out an amplifier and they sounded really good but the higher you turned up the volume more distortion came with it. I now have a four channel Kenwood amp running them with 60 watts RMS and up to 150 watts max which makes them really come alive and they have no distortion.

The bass hits hard and the highs sound amazing.
I highly recommend these speakers over many of the components out there even at higher prices.

Not The Best

Written By Mitch, Michigan on Tuesday, May 30, 2006

When I got these for Christmas a few months ago I was really excited to hook them up. I knew that Alpine usually makes quality products, because I own one of their head units and love it. However, my experience with these speakers has been a little different then with the HU. After I got these babies installed in my Nissan Maxima I listened to them and was to say the least, not too impressed. The lows came out pretty well. Really the 6.5" woofer is nothing to complain about for the price, but the highs were just WAY too harsh for my tastes. So, I lowered the tweeters by 3db and took another listen. They were still way too scratchy and bright. I lowered them again by another 3db and was still unhappy with their performance. At the bidding of a friend I decided to purchase a Rockford Fosgate 4-channel amp (P4004) to try and get some of the sound I was really looking for. However, even with the amp the speakers are still unimpressive. The highs remain harsh and inconsistent, and my music continues to be lifeless. I decided to order some Polk db6500's to take their place, and am eagerly awaiting their arrival. If I'm doing something wrong I hope that someone will e-mail me and correct me, but for now I retain my view that these speakers are not worth the money.

WOW!!!

Written By Tony, Weslaco, TX on Wednesday, April 19, 2006

I have a set of these powered by the brand new CDA 9857 head unit, and wow what an incredible out put. The sound is so clear at all volumes, its unbelieveable. Absolutely crisp sound, and the bass isnt bad at all for 6 1/2's, and if ure like me and cant stand window shaking bass these are perfect for u. A must have for someone wanting a absolutely great system but on a budget!!

Alpine Type-S SPS171A

Written By Garrett, Long Island, NY on Monday, August 15, 2005

My girlfriend bought me an Alpine head unit for my 95 jeep cherokee for my birthday. I decided to get a whole system to accompany my CDA-9847. For the Front speakers i bought these alpine components and they sound really good. I havent compared them to any other speakers but i can blast my system along with my two 12" type-r subs, using the head unit power alone and they come in real clear. Im considering purchasing another amp for my speakers to increase the quality further. I recommened these speakers to anyone.

Crisp, clear

Written By Danimal, Minneapolis, MN on Tuesday, August 02, 2005

I originally bought these speakers along with a pair of Alpine Type S 6x9's to run off an Alpine CDA 9833 HU. I had these installed in the front door which was completely dynamatted, and they sounded good...really clear. However, I recently installed a 12" Infinity Kappa Perfect sub in a sealed box in my trunk and fixed the crossovers to about 160Hz...They sound amazing now, bringing the soundstage up to the front while the 6x9's handle mid-bass and the sub the lows. I can drive fast with all the windows down and the sunroof open and hear the music perfectly without turning the volume up too loud. Great bang for the buck.

That was the long...now the short. Either use an amp or set the crossover higher and these speakers will really shine!

Great speaker in a difficult installation!

Written By Michael, League City, TX on Friday, May 27, 2005

I am blessed to own a 1999 Miata. Its also a curse if you know the stock sound system that comes in them. Doing ANY stereo upgrade work in a Miata requires an amazing amount of intestinal fortitude.

These components replaced the stock door components in my Miata. They are, without a doubt, AMAZING. I run them through an Alpine CDA-9830 and an Alpine V12 amplifier (all simultaneously installed when I replaced the original HU system.) Nice, punchy bass, crisp highs. These speakers are still clean and clear at highway speed with the top down.

I'll also be installing 2 pair of Polk DB460 speakers behind the seats, and will eventually be putting in a pair of 8" free air subs... WATCH OUT!

The Alpines are still the star of this show, though...

best "bang for the buck"

Written By Matt, Greensboro, NC on Tuesday, May 17, 2005

I did not consider getting the Alpine Type-S 6.5in component speakers at first. I am a big fan of Polk speakers and was pretty sure that I was going to go with the Polk Momo components. I went to a local store and compared the two sets. The Polks have a deeper bass than the Alpines, so if bass is what you're looking for, I'd recommend the Polks. However, the Polks hit two extremes, real low, deep bass and real high, sometimes harsh highs. The Alpines offer softer, but still vivid highs, and tight, distortion free bass. I put this set in the back of my Saab 9000 and am running them on 75 watts RMS. they sound crystal clear and handle the power with ease. The angle mounted tweeters are nice for getting the sound where you can hear it. What ultimately helped me make my decision was the price. with the Alpines at 70 dollars less than the Polks, it was a no-brainer. The Polks have great sound, but the highs are a little too harsh. The Alpines have incredible sound, especially for the price.

Pretty Good

Written By Jeff, Chicago, IL on Thursday, April 14, 2005

Alpine claims that these speakers sound good even with head unit power, but I have to disagree. I had these speakers for several months running off my Alpine head unit and I honestly didn't think they sounded any better than my stock speakers. Recently I added an Alpine MRP-F240 amp and the difference is substantial; my speakers sound now how I had hoped they'd sound all along. For these speakers to really shine, you have to have a lot of power. Period. Seriously, don't bother buying these speakers unless you're also buying an amp.

Clear and clean sound

Written By Mark, Petersburg, VA on Thursday, March 31, 2005

After hooking these up directly to an alpine receiver, I was impressed with the sound quality. However, to really make these speakers perform, you will probably need an amp to give them 40-50 watts of power. The crossover network works well at keeping the sound clean by separating the highs and lows and it even has an option to lower the output of the tweaters by -3db or -6db (for those that can't take really loud high frequency sounds). The crossover does not block bass.
On the box, there is a speaker frequency chart - based on the chart, I recommend you set a low pass filter at about 80Hz (Alpine's magic crossover #). Even though the speakers can get down to the mid 30Hz range, it won't be loud enough to matter without distorting.
