Alpine hi-fi

Alpine combines outstanding materials with superior construction to create their Type-S Series speakers. Upgrade your factory speakers with these Alpines, and they'll fill your vehicle with high-fidelity sound at a reasonable cost.

The SPS-406 4"x6" speakers use strong, lightweight polypropylene-mica woofers to handle the lower frequencies. Air-injected rubber surrounds keep cone movement under tight control, eliminating distortion and enhancing bass. Stamped steel frames provide rugged support for these speakers, and their low profile allows them to fit in more factory locations.

The 3/4" silk dome tweeters play your high notes smoothly and comfortably with no hint of harshness. You can also swivel the tweeters up to 10 degrees to improve the stereo image at your listening position. These efficient Type-S speakers will sound great with a low-powered factory radio, but they're also made to handle the high power output of an external amplifier. Grilles are not included — factory grilles are appropriate for most installations.

Product Highlights:

  • 4"x6" 2-way speakers (pair)
  • polypropylene-mica woofer cone with air-injected rubber surround
  • 3/4" silk dome tweeter
  • power range: 2-45 watts RMS (140 watts peak power)
  • frequency response: 93-22,000 Hz
  • sensitivity: 87 dB
  • top-mount depth: 1-3/4"
  • warranty: 1 year
  • Our 60-day money-back guarantee

I wanted to retain the original speaker grilles in order to maintain the stock appearance. With the help of my Crutchfield advisor these were chosen and they fit perfectly in the existing space and with the stock grilles and they sound great! thank you.

Pros: exact fit with the factory grilles

Cons: none come to mind

Installed in 1998 GMC Sierra Z71 extended cab and the speakers fit perfectly with no adapter necessary. They sound good and I'm pleased with the quality.

Pros: Easy to install (once you get the truck depaneled) and speakers sound good.

Cons: I can't think of any cons with these speakers. The only con was having to remove so many panels and my rear bench seat to install the new speakers.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Alpine deserves an a+ on this one, great quality on the build. Fantastic sound for a 4x6 speaker, remember these are 4x6 speakers, bass will barely exist. The best bang for the buck in 4x6 speakers and definitely one of the best sounding 4x6 speakers on the market. I put these in a Porsche 944, for the front doors you have to use a grille assembly for the rears they fit perfectly. I have used many 4x6 speakers and these are better than excellent in my book. Make sure you use a quality headunit with a true equalizer because these definitely tend to be bright.

Pros: A+++++ build quality, A+++++++ sound

Cons: A bit bright but with the right headunit there are excellent.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

These speakers worked great in my buddy's jeep wrangler. We used them to replace the factory front dash speakers and they make a world of difference. Even un-amped these speakers are loud enough to hear clean, crisp sound with the doors removed and top down. Lacking base but the sound quality is stunning. The only downside was having to make custom brackets to replace the stock mounting brackets but it wasn't too bad. Overall great product, as usual great stuff from alpine and great easy buying experience from crutchfield. Fast free shipping too.

Pros: Great sound, loud, clear and crisp highs

Cons: Lacking base, custom mounting brackets for certain applications

I have these speakers in the rear doors of my Chevy Silverado Ext. Cab. They are running off an Alpine Reciever and the Alpine Power Pack. Have had them installed little over a week now. They sound great, but I have to have the fade set up higher on front speakers to avoid these speakers from popping. Not a big deal. Doing this makes for clean, clear sound that meets my listening needs and expectations. Install was easy. They arrived when expected. Speaker harness makes it a clean installation with no wire splicing. Very happy with my purchase. Can't beat the price. Would recommend to a friend.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Got these speakers to replace the ones in front dash of my TJ. It is a 1998 so really had some age on the speakers. Replaced rear a while ago and fronts sounded so bad, I had "faded" my stereo to the rear. These speakers were larger and move more air to give me a full sound all the way around the vehicle now. Very happy with them and EASY to install. Crutchfield always gives you the directions and parts needed so no worries. I had this done in 30 minutes. Wife couldn't believe how fast it was finished.

Pros: Great full sound. Fit my vehicle thanks to website directions. Good price for sound.

Cons: None.

Written by: clayr from wilmington, nc on February 4, 2012

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

OK - as far as installation, no one beats Crutchfield - great directions, fast deliver, they rock.

Speakers - i bought because i trust the Alpine brand, but i was disappointed, if only from a perspective of how these speakers are presented for use. I bought them (along with a set of Kickers) to replace the stock speakers in my 2003 Silverado, set up with a Kenwood Excelon KDC-395. They were listed as replacements for the rear door 4x6 speakers. After the install they sound very clean, and very bright - but TOO BRIGHT. no matter how i adjusted the head unit, i could not get any low end from the speakers. So i decided i really needed 6x9's, even if i have to cut the door panel. I felt a little bad returning them, until i re-installed the stock speakers to hold me over, and they stock speakers have more low end - sounded BETTER - than these. I think they are good speakers, but better suited for a front door setup, not the rear where you need some bottom end. (I put the same head unit in my daughters car with 6x9's in the back and there is PLENTY of bottom end - even without an amp and subs).

so that's my comments - might work well in some setup, but not as the rear speakers. Get out your metal cutter and put those 6x9's in.

Pros: good sound - bright and clean

Cons: TOO bright

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

First of all I want to say that I love dealing with Crutchfield! They're always very helpful when you have problems! I really like these speakers a lot! They sound great with my JVC BonJiovi powered stereo! Crisp and clear! Especially for only being a two way speaker! There might be better speakers out there than these but they wouldn't fit in the front doors of my car. Trust me.. The price of these is very very low for the quality of the sound! Not a ton of bass but there's no way of getting that from a 4by6!

The front speakers just barely fit in and the grill is bulging out just a little bit. But in the rear I could have gone with something a little bigger magnet wise... but still stay with a 4 by 6. The hardest part of the rear install was pulling the vinyl apart without tearing it! (fingertip strength) The rest is really not that hard! I built up the rear footwell with a lot of layers of foam so that I could sit back there and work!

Replaced my stock 4x6 speakers in my 03 ext cab silverado. Huge improvement,
clarity and range of music are the biggest changes. Install was easy although
the speaker installation instructions are lacking. Crutchfield instructions
included helped out with proper and simple door removal. Overall very
satisfied. Still running them on the stock stereo, power handling dictates
turning the volume up a little more than before with stock speakers. Love the
sound, very good alpine speakers.

2002 cavalier

Written by: Tyler from Abington Pa on August 21, 2010

To start off i just bought a 2002 cavalier, and i wanted to upgrade my audio system. So I got a full system. I got a Kenwood Excelon KDC-X494 headunit, these 4x6 sps alpine speakers for the doors, 6x9 sps speakers for the rear, Kenwood KAC-6404 4 chan amp for the speakers, a jh600 mtx mono block amp, and a JL Audio 12W3v3-4 subwoofer.

I also put bass blockers to these speakers because thats what my subwoofer is for. I did test the bass before adding the blockers, and it was fine for a 4x6, but not great. I will say however the mids and highs sounded great with my amp. I would suggest these to anyone building a system. They make my music sound full and lively.

Improvement over Wrangler Stock Speakers

Written by: Anonymous from Mt. Pleasant on January 6, 2010

2005 Jeep Wrangler
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I paired the SPS-406 with Alpine SPS-500s in the roll bar and a Kenwood KDC-X493 head unit. A noticeable improvement over the cheap paper stock speakers on the 2005 Wrangler. A little more bass comes out and the mids and highs are clean & crisp. Don't make the same mistake I made and expect miracles from these speakers. A woofer and tweeter of this size can only do so much. Crutchfield provided prompt service as always and their technical support is awesome. The installation instructions on the speaker box made pairing up the speakers to the adapter plates a real chore.
[Editor's Note: The adapter needed to install 4x6" speakers in the wrangler dash is no longer available. We now recommend 4" speakers for this location.]

Great Speakers!

Written by: Daniel from Fort Knox, KY on October 14, 2009

1992 Chevrolet C Series
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

First- If you are buying these for the rear panels of an 88-93 Chevy Truck, these are NOT direct fit!!! The opening needs to be slightly modified to accept the metal spacer, or the trim will have to be modified if you use the plastic spacer (which works a little better IMO). As for the speakers, they sound absolutely terrific. Clarity even at very loud volumes is excellent. If you expect a lot of low end, you're looking at the wrong size speaker. These work best with bass blockers and a subwoofer installed for low-end frequencies. They can handle plenty of power, so match them up with a strong enough head unit to maximize results. Great mid and high tones, and as i mentioned before, clarity is awesome. Instructions in the box are terrible. It took me about 30 minutes to figure out what the diagram (no written instructions) were showing, but maybe that was just me. As always, Crutchfield is great and gives you everything you need to do the install except for the trim removing tool (you'll need it). Overall, very pleased with these speakers!

They dont have much bass but thats what a sub is for. I would definatelly suggest these speakers to anyone looking for a good sounding system. Good shipping Crutchfield!

Written by: Ryan from Apple Valley, Ca on September 10, 2008

Well I started by removing the factory speakers (which were a very poor quality) then soldered the new harness and connectors to the factory wire.

The negative and only reason I didnt give 5 stars was because I had to re-drill 2 new mounting holes per speaker because of the backing on the speaker.

Other than that excellent product, somewhat easy install, beginners should seek help of a knowledgeable person to oversee the process.

Saves you time and money.

You cant ask for
anything more in a
4x6 speaker. The
highs are great and
they can still
handle a little
bass. These can get
very loud and still
sound enjoyable.
The distortion at
high volumes is
minimal. They sound
way better then the
$100 speakers I
switched them with.
I have these amped
and hooked to an
after marked head
unit, which I would
recommend. I am
very satisfied.

Silk Dome Tweeters: Each speaker has a 3/4" Wide-Range Silk Dome Tweeter for smooth high frequencies.
