The sonic specialists at Alpine optimize their SPS-517 5"x7" speakers for great range and impressive tone definition, even at low power levels. You can connect these versatile Type-S Series speakers to your factory stereo for an immediate sonic improvement, or hook them up to a powerful aftermarket stereo or amp for increased performance.

Mineral-fortified polypropylene cones are exceptionally stiff, yet lightweight, which means they can push out accurate bass and deliver clear midrange. Resilient rubber surrounds help keep the woofer centered for accurate cone movement, reducing distortion. Silk dome tweeters provide warm high notes that bring out the character of the instruments and vocals. Grilles are not included — factory grilles are appropriate for most installations.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I was looking to purchase some rear speakers for my 2004 PT Cruiser. Based upon my purchase history a customer service rep recommended these speakers. They were supposed to fit the rear left and right pillars however the screw holes did not line up. After some self-tapping screws I was able to get them installed. I tuned my amp and all was well until a week ago when i noticed some annoying buzzing coming from the right speaker. Keep in mind these were sounding fine about three months ago when i first installed them. As I was happy at the time and didn't think otherwise I tossed the box and speaker grilles in the trash. Thought I didn't need them so I guess I'm screwed. Called customer service to help and was promptly brushed off and advised to call Technical Support.

Pros: Sounded great at first then it was all downhill after that.

Cons: Just read my review. Says enough.

Excellent speakers. I replaced the stock speakers that came with my vehicle. The difference is incredible. The install was extremely simple. The speakers came with step by step instructions with photos to show the set of of my vehicle. The total install time for the pair of speakers was less than 15 minutes. The speakers were exact fits for my vehicle with no alterations or changes needed.

These speakers are aesthetically pleasing to look at, even though mine went behind covers. I also think these speakers put out a very crisp clear sound. They were easy to install and fit in my 2006 F150 easily.

Pros: Good looks, crisp sound, easy installation.

Cons: Had to cut a two clips off of each speaker to fit in the front doors of my 2006 F150 Extended cab.

1998 Ford Windstar
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

These Speakers replaced some older Kenwood's KFC-C6882IE models. These were installed in a 1998 Ford Windstar Mini Van in the Front Doors. For 4 me, a Huge Improvement. The HI's are Higher and Cleaner and more crisp, and the BASS (again for me) was Much Improved, nothing that would Blow you away but enough that I noticed it right away. Controls all set Flat for Comparison. However when the Bass was mover by just 2 click towards "More", it was a Huge difference compared to the Kenwood's. Not Boomy, but Solid and more distinct. They seem to move more AIR, I am "not using" enclosures either. I Play a Variety of music, Country, Rock, Classic Rock, Rock N Roll, and some Classic Motown. It all sounds better through these Alpine's by a lot.... I hear things that I wonder what was that, and it was stuff that I hadn't heard through the Kenwood's. I am using the Same Receiver / Deck / Head unit, a Kenwood KDC-X492 22W with No Amp, and No Sub. Have Older Pioneers in the Rear that really don't do much but replaced the original Ford Junk. You can find them cheaper else where, however, Crutchfield Treats there customers like no one else, so the Little Extra is no Biggie. Shipping was Fast and Packaging was Perfect. No Damage to anything. For the Bucks, these are well worth it!

Pros: Sound Great.

Cons: None that I can find after working them out for a Couple weeks. However, It should be Noted here that I did have to Spend some Time Buzzing out two Holes on Both Speakers because they "were Not" a remove and replace and your done Job. It took me and extra 20 / 30 Mins of back and forth to get the Mounting Holes to Line Up. Wasn't much fun having to do that I would have to say.

Great Sound - imperfect fit on F-150

Written by: darmom from California on March 23, 2015

Excellent sound, much louder, fuller and clearer than stock. I initially replaced my stock 2013 Ford F-150 front door speakers with Pioneer TS-G6845R. Bad call, those were totally lacking any bass response. These have about the same bass as stock, but with much cleaner sound and better mid and high end. Excellent for running without an amp. The holes don't line up perfectly, however, which is why we lost a star. I was able to line up two of the holes, and then used a self-tapping screw and washer to secure a third mounting point. It worked fine and was fairly simple. I plan to get a second pair for the rear doors.

Pros: Great Sound. Clean, loud, with decent bass response.

Pros: Only had to grind a little off each mounting hole to properly align with door mounting holes. Dremel to the rescue.

Cons: None. Great sounding mid/treble speaker. Bass required. Duh.

These speakers are unbelievable. The sound clarity is amazing. I installed four of these in a 2009 Ford Focus and used Crutchfield's wire harnesses. What a breeze to install if you follow the Master Sheet provided. I would definitely buy another pair of these Alpine speakers for another car in the future. You can't go wrong with a buy one pair get the second pair for half price from Crutchfield.

Pros: Great sound; Easy installation; High quality product

Cons: None that I can think of

not terribly impressed

Written by: F250 from Ca on December 2, 2014

Speakers did not exactly line up with the holes in the doors of my 2000 F250. Had to put in screws at an angle and fenagle things to make them work. The speakers don't sound much better then the stock speakers in my truck. My truck is the Lariat model, so I suspect it came with upgraded speakers from the factory. A call to Crutchfield wasn't too helpful. I was pretty much told "nothing I can do for you, send them back". Maybe the techs are grouchy and overworked after Black Friday and Cyber Monday, but this was the worst tech help I've ever had with Crutchfield.

Pros:

Cons: Speakers didn't fit right and don't sound that great.

Crutchfield response on December 9, 2014 We're sorry to hear that the service wasn't what you expected. We've forwarded your comments to the Director of Technical Support for his review. Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Put 2 sets of these speakers in the doors(4) of my 2014 F150 to swap out the horrible factory speakers it came with. They fit perfectly although I had to use the adapter that came with the speakers from Alpine. If you use the adapter, use the phillips head screws from Alpine to attach it to the door, the factory screws have a hex head and they keep the speaker from laying flat on the adapter. Other than that installation was a breeze with the master sheet and wiring harness from Crutchfield. These speakers are a massive improvement over the factory one's and high quality as always from Alpine. The only thing with them in my case with such a big cab area is I think I'm going to have to put in a small amp to run them. The factory head unit just isn't giving them enough power to let them shine. Very happy with this purchase from Crutchfield.

Pros: Easy install-direct fit Great sound High quality

I upgraded my stock, 2001 F150 speakers to these and it was a perfect upgrade. I just wanted something more practical than the stock speakers which sounded muddy and about to explode with any volume over 10. These are clear and have enough mid and low bass to give a good thump.

Pros: good volume and clear tone. Handles high volume well and stays clear.

Cons: None as of now.

great replacement to the stock 94-98 mustang speakers. These speakers where super easy to install and are made of quality materials. The mid-range and high-range sounds are crisp and clear, but these speakers provide to little to no bass I would differently recommend pairing these with some subwoofers to get the best overall sound

Pros: easy install quality material great mids/highs loud

Cons: not enough bass

Big Improvement over OEM

Written by: Tony P from Tucson on June 28, 2014

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

These were purchased to upgrade the OEM speakers that were developing that annoying low frequency "rattle" in my 2011 Ford Escape. I installed them just prior to a 4 week road trip and what a difference. Most of my driving is on the highway, and when you do a lot of highway driving your ears become attuned to the sounds and noises associated with both a normally operating vehicle and one that is starting to develop problems. During the first couple of days of the trip I found myself turning off the stereo to listen to the strange sounds I kept hearing from the vehicle until I realized that I was actually hearing elements in the music that the OEM speakers could not reproduce well enough to be recognizable. I have music that I have been listening to for 40 years and I've never heard some of these elements before, and suddenly I have a whole new listening experience with my existing music library. I purchased 4 of these to replace both the front and rear speakers in my vehicle (not equipped with a sub-woofer) and had them installed in 75 minutes following the included simple installation instructions. The included wiring harness adapters made installation a no-brainer. I was also impressed with the quality of construction of these units. The mid and high range sound from these speakers is excellent, and unless your a real audiophile you'll find that the bass response is more than adequate. This is the best cost-effective upgrade to the sound system I could have made.

Pros: Excellent high and mid-range sound reproduction and the bass response is more than adequate for all but the fussiest audiophiles. Easy installation in the factory holes with no modifications at all, simply pull out the old speakers and bolt on the new ones. Do yourself a favor and test the speakers before you re-install the door panel. It will save you a lot of time.

Cons: Not really a con, but I did notice a bass rattle from the rear speakers after installation. At first I thought I didn't get the speakers bolted in tightly, but it turned out to be the outside door handles that were vibrating in conjunction with the deeper bass tones. A self-adhesive felt pad applied to where the articulating part of the door handle rested on the car body solved the problem and now I have excellent sounding deep bass.

I bought 2 sets of the SPS-517s to replace the factory speakers in my 2011 F150 SuperCrew. Even with the factory head unit its a huge improvement. Tighter bass, more defined mids and highs, and more overall volume. I'm very happy with them. A 5x7 speaker is only going to give you so much bass, especially in a larger vehicle like this, but these do well. I think they have more bottom end than the comparable Kicker 5x7s in my other truck.Add a small amp and maybe a 10 or 12" sub and You'll have a real decent stereo for not a huge outlay of cash. I'd buy them again.

2004 Ford F-250 Super Duty
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I recently installed a new head unit in my 2004 F250, which greatly improved the sound of my truck's stereo. When I hooked up these speakers instead of the tired old factory ones, what a difference! I didn't realize that the stereo could sound even better. I can make out details in the music (even with the road noise from a 4X4 truck) that I couldn't hear before. My cell phone calls using Bluetooth sound clearer now. The clarity of sound is impressive at this price. I find I don't need a subwoofer, with the good bass response in these speakers. The speakers fit perfectly and installation was very easy, with the Crutchfield instructions on how to remove the door panels. It took me about 30 minutes to install four of these speakers.

Pros: clarity of sound, ease of installation

Cons: none

Installed these speakers in my F150 super crew. They are a world of difference over factory speakers. Love them and willl use them on my next vehicle. The holes mounting holes didnt perfectly line up so I fastened the one end and drilled 2 new holes for the other. Not a big deal to me. Everything else is plug and play.

2013 Mazda 6
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

We have now put 12 of these speakers in three different vehicles. The latest was a new 2013 Mazda 6. The minute you take them out of the box to see them side by side with the factory speakers it will be night and day. Well constructed and the sound is excellent. Have to spend a lot of time in traffic, but enjoy my ride with my new system and speakers. A dramatic improvement from the factory crap that had been installed! Will definitely buy again

Pros: Exact fit for my 2013 Mazda 6, all holes align perfectly.

Cons: Not the Alpine 517's fault but I wish their had been a conversion harness for my vehicle.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Great replacement speakers for a 2011 F150 Super cab. My factory speakers started to buzz badly after 1 year. I replaced all 4 speakers with the SPS-517. Incredible difference for just a speaker change. Stock head unit. Speakers were about as easy to replace as it gets for autos/trucks. Good documentation provided.

Pros: Great deal for the price

The passenger rear door speaker was buzzing with any bass at all. I replaced both rear door speakers with these Alpines. The difference in sound quality was noticable and, obviously, it took care of the buzzing from the factory speaker.

Pros: Good sounding speakers at a reasonable price.

Wow. huge improvement. and now I dont have to crawl over the passenger side!. I have only had these speakers for a couiple days, so they are not even broken in. Using an Alpine 103 head unit. good to go

I purchase these speakers to replace the stock speakers in my Ford F350 Crew Cab. I chose to power them with the Alpine MRX-F30 4 channel amp. I am pleasantly surprised by the clean sound even at high volume levels. I would absolutely recommend the speakers to anyone looking to upgrade their stock system with out breaking the bank.

Pros: Great Quality sound.

2nd pair

Written by: Frank from Washington on January 4, 2012

I had a pair of boston acoustics in rear and stock speakers in my doors on my 99 Mercury Grand Marquis. I wanted to upgrade and was thinking about the type R's but didnt want to run an amp. So I went with theese. With the money I saved I just bought the alpine KTP-445 power source as I have an alpine deck and it will upgrade me to 45 RMS X 4. My only worry now is that I will have to get a pair for the rear due to the fact that my Boston Acoustics get slightly distorted at max volume, while theese have much more to go. Excellent mids and good highs (about as much as you can expect without going with component speakers) very loud with a decent deck especially with an amplifier. with the purchase I made today for the KTP-445 I will be at 1480 RMS total..... time to upgrade my alternator :( 1300 RMS going to two alpine R 12's at 4 ohms in the trunk and soon to be 180 RMS going to my door and rear speakers. ill write a review as to how my Boston acoustics like the extra power. I think I'll stick with alpine for now if I am going to amp up my speakers. Something tells my my BA's are going to blow up with the extra power. Will replace them with another set of Type S's when that happens.

Pros: Loud and Clear! large improvement over stock speakers and no need to run a amp to get them breathing

Cons: nothing to not love

2008 Mazda 6
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

We installed these speakers in a 2008 Mazda 6 about four months ago. The speakers were a good choice for the rear doors since component tweeters weren't needed in the rear. They fit the factor holes perfectly allowing us to keep the factor door panel intact for a clean install.

The sound from these speakers is incredible. No noticeable coloring from the lowest bass notes to the highest highs. The speakers are coupled to an Alpine MRX-V60 amp, Boston Acoustics SC50 component speakers in the front (component tweeters were small enough to fit in the factor bezels), and a pair of Polk DXi104 SVC 10" subs in the trunk. The Alpine SPS 517s fill in the rear of the cabin beautifully for the front passengers, and the rear passengers get great direct sound pounded at them. Very pleased with them.

Thanks for your question. For information on selecting the best amp for your speakers I would recommend reaching out to an Advisor by phone (1-800-324-9695) or online chat. They will be able to help determine the differences between the amp models and help you make the best choice for your system. [ Krissy  Jun 07, 2015 ]  Staff
I forwarded your question to an Advisor and they responded with the following: The Alpine SPS-517 speakers won't fit in the rear, because the magnet diameter is too large to fit in the factory opening. You can more space to work with in the front, so they will fit there. If you would like to discuss further you can contact an Advisor directly by phone (1-800-324-9695) or online chat.
