Our take on the Alpine SPS-M600

by Leigh Schoettinger
Alpine
Alpine Authorized Online Dealer

Give your nautical journeys a boost with a new pair of marine speakers. Alpine's SPS-M600 6-1/2" marine speakers use a time-tested design to boost the performance of your boat's audio system.

Alpine equips its speakers for high power handling, so they'll cut through the noise of the wind, waves, and motor. The stiff 6-1/2" polymica woofers deliver powerful, accurate reproduction, while the titanium/PEI tweeters supply plenty of high-frequency detail.

Alpine built the SPS-M600 speakers to withstand the tough environmental conditions of life on the water. The speakers sport silver UV-resistant grilles and high-temperature custom frames that stand up to direct exposure to the sun, while treated cloth surrounds resist damage from moisture, heat, and motor oil. Your speakers won't turn yellow or lose any musical zip.

Highlights:

  • 6-1/2" 2-way marine speakers (pair)
  • polymica woofer with coated cloth surround
  • 7/8" titanium/PEI balanced-dome tweeter
  • built-in tweeter protection
  • silver UV-resistant grilles and high-temperature ABS custom frames

Features

Woofers: Each speaker has a 6-1/2" poly-mica woofer cone and coated cloth surround to handle the marine environment.

Tweeters: Each speaker uses a 7/8" titanium and PEI (Polyetherimide) balanced dome tweeter. A built-in circuit helps protect the tweeter from being overdriven.

Grille/Basket: Centrex 813-coated grilles and high-strength, non-resonant, high-temperature ABS frames provide durability in fresh or salt water, and UV protection against yellowing. The silver grilles are removable, but are used in most marine applications. With the grilles in place the speaker mounting height is 0.893 inches, versus 0.605 inches without the grilles.

I installed these in my 80 crestliner Apollo 660. The boat had nothing and had to install everything custom. I have them hooked up to my alpine deck that I have had since 06. Sound quality is great. I got to test them before I bought from my local dealer and was impressed for the $90 I was charged. All around good buy if u are looking for quality at a good price.

I thought the sound quality of these speakers was not very good. I returned them and will be trying another set of speakers. Crutchfield has been great with the return.

I installed 4 of these in my Glastron bow rider to replace the stock 2 speaker (5") cassette stereo. I have them hooked to a Kenwood KMR-350U deck. I am very happy with the sound quality and volume these speakers put out. They are exactly what I was looking for. I can't wait to get back on the water and crank the tunes!
Pros:
Great sound, great looks

Just What I Paid For...

Written By Brian D, Columbus, OH on Tuesday, April 03, 2012
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Definitely worth the price! Replaced a set of old 5" 2-way speakers on my boat and the difference borders on amazing. Paired them with the Kenwood KMR-440U and the RMS wattage from the receiver seems well matched to these Alpines since they handle wide volume ranges with pretty accurate reproduction. In fact, with the bass boost on max and cranking some volume, the speakers really didn't distort as much as expected.
Pros:
Great sound; nice appearance with the stock grilles
Cons:
None (so far)

MORE THAN HAPPY

Written By Bill, Asheville,NC on Sunday, April 01, 2012
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I am excited to hit the lake this summer with these speakers!!! Last year we did'nt have music. Make way for the party barge! Just finished installing a Clarion M109 HD and two of the Alpine MPS-M600 marine speakers. One speaker is mounted in front of the helm and the other on the starbord side, behind the captain's chair, mounted close to the floor of the back seat. So, with this setup, speakers six feet apart facing two directions,I was concerned on how it would sound. Not any more! WOW! I am more than pleased and the bass is awesome especially since I was not exspecting any. I have owend Alpine decks and really do like the sound they put out . This is the first time I've bought Apine speakers and love them. INCREDIBLE SPEAKERS!

Pros:
very nice bass
Cons:
none

Awesome Replacement Speakers !!

Written By Nick.C, Tampa Bay FL on Monday, August 15, 2011
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I came on here and read all the reviews on these speakers before my purchase. I was very pleased to find out that they lived up to their reviews, great sound, and the clarity is awesome. I would recommend these speakers to anyone !! and you cant beat the price and customer service, when you call crutchfield you actually get someone who knows the products their selling.

I also needed some cables so that I can hook my Iphone into my radio and play my music. All They needed was the serial # off the deck and they hooked me up.

2003 Chap 200ssi Replacement

Written By Satisfied Customer, McKinney Texas on Monday, August 01, 2011
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Just replace 4 stock JBL speakers in my 2003 Chap 200ssi. These are excellent speakers and the install was very easy. I did all 4 on the water in about 20 minutes. Still using the JBL tuner so I am upgrading to an Alpine soon and I am sure they will sound even better. I research a lot of speakers and decided on the Alpine. These speakers sound so good I could not justify spending another $100 per pair. I would suggest these speakers to anyone who is interested in a major upgrade from stock that does not want to break the banks :)

Purchased these to replace 15 year old speakers in my fish/ski boat. For small 2-way speakers the sound quality is excellent. Very clear sound and the bass is adequate. Good build quality.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Sound great, could be a little better with base, but they are 6.5" so what else can I ask for. If you want to listen to music while you are running around the lake, you might want higher powered speakers. With engine noise etc... they get drowned out. It would take quite a system to sound good on the go, not sure I could handle all that.

Great Speakers, Great Bargain

Written By Joe, Brighton, MI on Wednesday, May 05, 2010

Just installed these speakers in my 2008 Glastron GT225 to replace the (lame) factory speakers. No amplifier, just powered by the Alpine CDA-118M marine stereo I bought at Crutchfield and it sounds AWESOME. Dropped into the existing 5" cutouts, crimpled new terminals, drilled 4 new holes and was rocking in less than 2 hours. For fun I unstalled the port side speakers first, keeping the factory speakers in the starboard side. I switched the balance back and forth to hear the difference and oh my it will be a different summer on the boat. Highly recommended and the price is a bargain.

Very Good Buy

Written By Patrick, IL on Saturday, September 05, 2009

These replaced two factory speakers that were blown. I was amazed how they sound with my cheap receiver. Normally the receiver is the most important piece of equipment for sound and clearity, but these speakers really made my system sound much better.

I was amazed how clean and sharp these sound. The bass is there but not overburdened; they can go very loud if you want them to.

I highly recommend these inexpensive speakers for better sound in your boat.

I purchased 2 pair to run with my Sony Marine CDX-M30 (52W X 4) and am very pleased with the clear and crisp sound. Bass is sharp but those who like a lot will want to add a sub-woofer. I would definitely recommend these speakers.

WOW!!!

Written By Hieu, Saint Augustine, FL on Tuesday, May 26, 2009
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I added two Alpine speakers in the bow which is pushed by Sony CDX- M60UI. Adding the two speakers in the bow of my SeaRay 180 Sport is just "WOW"! I only had 2 speakers in the stern which gets drowned out when I am running the boat. Now, with the four speakers set up, I can hear my music. The bow of my boat acts like an enclosure and the bass on the Alpine really hits good especially for not running an amp. I was very amazed at the bass and treble from the speakers. This is a must buy!

Floyd

Written By Floyd, Columbia, SC on Sunday, July 01, 2007

I had 4 older model pioneer 6 1/2" 2 way speakers on my pontoon boat but two of them sounded terrible because they were blown and the other two I thought sounded pretty good..that is until I bought a pair of the Alpine SPS M600 6 1/2" two way coaxal spekers shown here. My remaining two good pioneer speakers sound terrible when compared to my Alpines so I'm buying another pair. These speakers are so powerful and have phenomenal sound quality. I don't even need an amp and I thought I would have to buy one. I'm buying two more because these are by far the best speakers I've ever purchased. You can't go wrong with these speakers... A++++
