Alpine Authorized Online Dealer

Big and bad and built for heavy-duty sound, Alpine's SWR-1042D 10" subwoofer delivers high-impact bass that you can hear and feel. Alpine has taken previous generations of its SWR Series subs and added the hottest technology for ground-pounding power and superb accuracy.

The pulp cone has been reinforced with Kevlar® (the material used in bulletproof vests) for extra rigidity, so it won't buckle under hard play. A rubber surround helps to maximize cone travel for deep bass, while withstanding the decay that can destroy a speaker. A redesigned thermal management system and aluminum airflow motor cover shed heat quickly for efficient operation and better power handling.

The 2" dual 4-ohm voice coils are big enough to handle lots of power while offering system wiring flexibility. The tinsel leads are virtually unbreakable — they're woven into the dual progressive Nomex spiders. An aluminum diecast frame provides a secure, non-resonant housing. The SWR-1042D is designed for use in sealed or ported enclosures.

Note: If you are wiring this DVC sub for lower impedance, make sure that your amp is compatible. Most car amplifiers are stable down to 2 ohms in standard mode, or 4 ohms in bridged operation.

What's a component sub and why would I want one?

A component sub is simply a speaker that's designed to reproduce bass once it's installed in a compatible enclosure. Think about the impact of a movie soundtrack in a big theater or even in your own home HDTV setup. A component sub can add the same kind of power to the music in your car. And a car sub is not all about the boom that you hear on a street corner (although that's cool too) - you can pair a component sub with your choice of enclosure to get bass just the way you like it, from tight and punchy to fat and loose. And once you experience music in your car with a well-tuned subwoofer, you'll never go back.

I have this baby wired at 2 ohms with a Rockford Fosgate 300 Punch in my G35 and it knocks so hard! Need not to go into detail... simply put - a great sub for all genres.

Boom snap clap boom snap BOOM! Superb speaker. Wish I could have fit 50 of them in my trunk but 1 did the job just fine.

I recently bought 2 of these and i hooked it up to a pdx 1.100 amp. i also have alpine type r 6"x9", 6 inch splits and tweeters with an alpine mrp f550 (yes love the alpine) and it sounds absolutely amazing, i listen to most genres and everything sounds perfect. the bass is so big and shakes houses when i drive past :)

One of the best 10's out there!

Written By TEX, Lihue,HI on Thursday, August 19, 2010

I bought two of these a couple months ago but i couldn't fit both of them in the trunk because the Paseo has a really small area to work with. I used one in a 1.5 cubic box ported,so i bridged my RF P500.2 putting out over 500 rms and WOW! It really surprised me for a little 10! At full volume you can barely hear yourself yelling and it hurts your ears after a while. For this price it is a STEAL, also you should get NOW!!

Hard, heavy bass, but needs a cross over...

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This Alpine 10" sub hits hard and delivers good low end bass without any distortion. 1,000 watts rms @ 2 ohm is no problem. The only down side is that I get more vocals through this sub than I have with other subs. If you don't have a crossover already you will need one to eliminate the vocals.

Great sounding speaker!

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This one 10' speaker sounds great! Very crisp sounding bass. I mostly listen to rock music, which does not usually produce a lot of bass, but I must mention it does add the added bass factor. I do have other music that comes across my stereo, and I must say this one speaker has a lot of potential. Sounds really great with all types of music. Definitely worth the money. For me I have always been an Alpine fan, and will stick with these Type R speakers from now on. Very duriable speaker.

Surpassed my expectations

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I bought this to replace the factory sub my 2004 sentra was equipped with. I have it wired at 2 ohms in a sealed enclosure (along with a pound of polyfill), and powered by an Alpine MRP-500 mono amp.

Simply put, it hits harder, deeper, and tighter than I expected. I listen to mainly death/hardcore/progressive metal, and this sub is absolutely perfect for it. Flying kick drum passages are tight and clear, and triggered bass drops completely dominate my car's interior. I love it! I highly recommend this sub to anyone who is looking to fill their car with bass, without attracting lots of attention. When standing outside my car, there is only minimal rattling coming from my trunk, and the "bump" is faint. And to anyone who listens to similar music: I recommend a sealed enclosure. I originally tried a ported box, and found it to be a bit sloppy during double kick sections. The sealed enclosure requires a bit more juice, but it hits harder and really tightens things up

For a ten, it pounds

Written By Devin, Kenosha, WI on Thursday, July 29, 2010

I never thought that a little 10" sub could pound as hard as this. It sounds good with rock and rap. It brings out the punch in the kick just enough so you can feel it in your chest. But also when it comes to the synthesized bass from rap this sub is more than capable of handling it. And i only have one. I cant imagine how loud 2 would be. So if you like rock and sometimes listen to rap then get this sub. It will do what you want with the rock and rap.

This baby bumps!!

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I love this sub, Needs alot of power thought but this baby bumps. I listen to my rap at low volume and it hits hard, I can feel it in my seat, I can hear the trunk rattle from outside, It's good for the low bass, tight and clean,What else would you expect from an Alpine type R. I got the warranty because I plan on beating the heck out of this every day. I have just one of these 10" in a sealed box and it's just enough to keep me from going deaf, if you get a pair of these you will need to run at @ 2 Ohms and 1000Watts RMS since they demand alot of power, I have a 500Watt RMS amp for this one and it's excellent, If I turn it up I can barely hear the singing from the bose stereo in my CX7.Might have to upgrade the factory 4 channel later on if I want to listen to my subs at a higher volume. Highly recommended.

Surprisingly good

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I bought this sub on a whim a couple of years ago. In my 2007 KIA Sportage, it does a great job. I can get 120dba out of the thing without getting any distortion until you get into the 20hz range.

I listen to mostly heavy metal / rock. The sub doesn't miss a beat on those really fast double bass songs as it is really tight and responsive, just like a 10 ought to be!

I love it so much, that when I blew it out, I knew that I would go with another one. I just might buy another one just to have it handy another two or three years from now!

Love it

Written By 90 Caprice, Thunder Bay, ON on Saturday, August 08, 2009

This is my first sub, and I'm glad I chose this one. I've got a mid-range amp, and a ported enclosure. The sound is clean, but I get enough bump to knock off trim from my car! Highly recommended.

Got one Type R; my first sub. I'll tell you, it truly delivers a good amount of bass in the interior without ticking off other drivers - which is exactly what I was aiming for. Great vibration and my speakers maintain their clarity.

And Initially I wanted two 15's... pfft yeah right!

Amazing Sub

Written By Lee, Sarasota, FL on Saturday, November 08, 2008

I bought these about 3 monthes ago for my pt cruiser. I have to tell you this is one of the loudest in my town. I have 2 of these type r's hooked up to an Alpine 1000w putting out 500 to each sub in a qlogic ported box. I listen to rap all the time and this system is sooo loud. People tell me they can hear me from 4 blocks away. I definately recommend this sub and if u like clean hard bass this is it.

This sub is not that good in terms of construction. I have only had this for a year and a half. It came apart at the surround connecting to the basket. I used to like Alpine but I feel this is the end of me dealing with them. My amp also does not work anymore either it is the Alpine 450. I was a certified MECP installer with many years of experience. I play pretty much at mid volume or lower.

Also, my customer service experience here was also not up to par.

Good Sub

Written By Tipking, Atlanta, GA on Monday, April 07, 2008

Installed 1 in a .75 cubic ft. sealed enclosure in a 2004 Silverado LT. The sub sits on the back seat and it hits hard and clean paired with the factory Bose. I'm only putting 386 watts it at 2 ohms; an Alpine Mrd M301. It sounds so good I'm thinking about picking up one myself.

i have this thing hooked up to a kenwood KAC-8103 drawing 500w at 2 ohms, its perfect. get it with the 1.25 cft ported enclosure from Q Logic; dont worry about the port tuning or whatever, it sounds fine especially for electronic music like benny benassi. punchy and accurate. A++

First, and prolly one of the best

Written By Brady, Amherst, NY on Friday, November 09, 2007

This is my first sub I bought, I trust Alpine with all there equipment, best bang for the buck I'd have to say. I have One Alpine Type R 10" in a q-logic 10" sealed box, deciding whether or not to put polyfill in, and I have a Alpine MRP-M650, and only have it up to 1/2 percent power settings, which I might change to see the pull potential of this baby. But yes very good sub for the price, i would have rather gone with a 12 but wasnt sure or not if it would have fit which it may have but didnt chance it. Good bass hits, and very clean, thinking of also buying a ported box so all you can here me from d-block. but yeah all in all good sub.

Very nice, hits hard. Right now paired with an Alpine MRP-F450, awaiting a 550, good response, clean bass. Just a reminder (especially to the ones who read the bad reviews on this sub) BREAK IT in gently and follow Alpine's advice. It may kill you to play it at low levels for the 20 hours they say, but you'll be well rewarded! Thanks Alpine!

Hard hitting sub

Written By turbotib, Baltimore MD on Friday, September 07, 2007

awesome sub! I installed one of these in my car and it hits loud and clear. I have it hooked up to a Alpine MRP-605 amp and it puts out some serious bass.

This thing should be plenty powerful for the average person. It wont win a competition but others can hear you before they see your car.

I have one 10 in a sealed box and theses are amazing. i love them. it hits almost as hard as my friends 2 kicker comp vrs in aported box. i want to get a ported box and when i do it will hit harder and im verey satisfied with these. so if u want big outout for not alot of space or money. i recommend these!

Where'd my ears go?

Written By Stephen, Wayne, NJ on Wednesday, May 23, 2007

I have 2 10" Type-Rs in a custom ported box (not the best, but it holds them in place). They are powered by what I thought would be an underpowered amp (Alpine MRP-M650). I come to realize that my *car* is underpowered for my system - I need a new battery.

Anyway, these things are amazing. I have yet to feel what they are really capable of. I have not felt or heard any subs that are like these. They give accurate, loud bass with great kick. They will rattle your neighbors windows.

Great buy.

These subwoofers are sick!!! I have two of em in my Ford Ranger with a Fosgate punch 325.1 mono amp on each sub in a dual 10 ported probox and it slams. I have beaten people with two Kicker L7 12's, a guy with four overpriced subwoofers. With these two tens I am hitting around 146db. Alpine has really outdone it this time. These are the best subs for the price no doubt. I would prefer these over any brand. And the type x's, even louder. My next setup is going to be four type X 12's on a T40001BD fosgate amp.

Bought this sub a week ago and had it installed at my local shop with a 600w RMS Orion amp. Wasn't sure if 1 10 inch in my SUV was gonna be enough, and boy was I wrong. After seriously turning down the bass and playing with the setting a lil bit, i had the cleanest sounding system I've ever heard. I have nothing bad to say about this woofer other than it took me so long to break down and by one :)

Kick the Kickers

Written By Jon, Miami on Wednesday, March 01, 2006

I've been doing car stereo for about 11 years. These subs are amazing. I recently replaced a pair of Kenwood db series with L5's and the L5's sounded pretty good. Then I replaced the Kickers with a pair of Type R's. There is no comparison. Ported boxes (1.25 cubic ft) and an Alpine MRD-605. They're sick.

alright subs

Written By Sam, Shakopee, MN on Tuesday, January 17, 2006

these sub sound good but i had high expectations for the subs for the price and what everybody says about type r's so i thought i give em try i got 1 type r 10 and an alpine head unit cda-9847 and a sony xpold amp the silver series puts out 1400w peak and i turn the volume up to about 12 on the deck and the sub is already maxing and sqeeks and makes al sorts of sound but it does put out alot of bass and shakes my truck i dont know if mine is just like that or all of them but it does sound good

Great sub for the money.

Written By Josh, Lake Ozark, MO on Sunday, October 02, 2005

The Type R 10 is one of the best tens on the market. They aren't incredibly expensive and you get alot out of them. They are the clearest and cleanest sounding tens i have ever heard...the cone is so strong that there is no distortion at all, and they look good as well. If you aren't willing to pay the big bucks for a set of kicker L7's then these type R's are the subs for you. You will be thumpin hard in no time...

i have a pair of these subs but in 12's they doo have a clean sound but they have one huge defect the braid cables on these woofers bust if yo run them at there max dont recomend runing them loud they will break beleave me i have hat to resolder and replace the brade cables a countless amount of times dont recomend these to anyone who likes turning it up

Excellent Quality

Written By Aanidar, Wisconsin on Tuesday, May 31, 2005

This sub is incredible for the money, I currently have two in a slot port box with about 325 watts going to each one (working on getting a bigger amp) they hit as hard as any ten I've heard (which I'll admit no I'm not an expert) but whats nice is they are also the cleanest, sharpest sounding bass I've heard from a sub yet. Definitely a speaker I would recommend if you are interested in a hard hitting, punchy bass line but don't necessarily want to have to tighten the lug nuts on your ride every other week, if you want that go with the Type X, lol.

most awesome subs ever

Written By cory, starr s.c on Monday, May 30, 2005

let me start by saying, ive been doing car audio for 8 years. I have never heard two 10 inch subs hit so hard in my entire life. they say 500 rms, and ive got about 600 going to each one, and they are taking every bit of it.they seem like they could take even more. i have em in a .65 sealed box, with a bazooka rsa800.d amp running at 1 ohm (1245w continuous). absolutely worth every penny, anything more than this would be unbelievable.

Kevlar Reinforced Pulp Cone: This Alpine Type-R subwoofer has a Kevlar reinforced pulp cone. Kevlar adds strength and tear resistance to the woofer cone while maintaining the benefits of a pulp cone design. There is also an oversized inverted dust cap of the same material, which increases rigidity and virtually eliminates distortion at extreme volume levels.

HAMRS: The woofer features a High Amplitude Multi Roll Surround (HAMRS), made of injection molded Santoprene, that allows for an incredible amount of linear excursion and greater SPL.

Mirrored Progressive Nomex Spiders: This subwoofer has twin mirrored progressive Nomex spiders for added stability and mechanical durability. The custom progressive rolls give the woofer a longer, more linear stroke with maximum centering and restoring force. Special edge control design and Nomex construction provide excellent tear resistance, strength, and long-term reliability. The woofer has integrated tinsel speaker leads that are woven into the spiders for the one-sided terminal layout.

Cast Aluminum Frame: The woofer is mounted to a custom cast aluminum frame for added strength. This high mass frame also dissipates heat quickly to make it an integral part of the woofer's thermal management system.

Heat Transfer Plate: This subwoofer contains an integrated heat transfer plate that is thermally coupled to the voice coil. This plate pulls heat away from the voice coil and transfers it to the cast aluminum frame, achieving up to 20% additional power handling, and better reliability.

Magnetically Optimized Motor Structure: Through Alpine's advanced magnetic circuit design, this woofer offers better sound quality, and a higher sensitivity and power handling capability:

  • Compound Radius Curve Pole Geometry: This patented design intensifies the magnetic field for higher SPL and lower distortion. The magnetic field is balanced over a wider area for better control at high excursion.
  • Extra Length Extended Pole: The extra long pole piece provides additional surface to capture radiated heat for additional power handling.
  • Extra Thick Top Plate: The extra thick top plate keeps more windings in the magnetic gap for better control.
  • Dual Stacked Magnets: The dual stacked magnets provide the powerful magnetic energy and extra depth for high SPL and maximum control.
  • Bumped Back Plate: This "bottomless" design provides extra room for longer cone excursions.
  • Optimally Saturated Pole: The optimally saturated pole reduces magnetically induced heat by eliminating eddy currents throughout the voice coil stroke, and evens flux distribution to eliminate "hot spots."

Multi-Stage Ventilation System: The SWR-1042D has a multi-stage ventilation system with the following features:

  • Cone/Voice Coil Junction Venting: The unique parabolic cone and voice coil attachment piece help to pull cool air into the motor structure.
  • Spider Plateau/Leg Vent System: Two vertical slits are cut into each of the five "legs" of the basket below the spider to allow cool air to flow in and heated air to flow out.
  • Dual Flare Pole Vent: Another part of the thermal management system is the unique dual flare design of the pole vent. This maximizes the flow of cooler air to the voice coil, and results in better power handling.

Dual Voice Coils: For increased system flexibility, the woofer has two 4-ohm voice coils. When the voice coils are wired in parallel, the woofer presents a 2-ohm load. When the voice coils are wired in series, the woofer presents an 8-ohm load. If each coil is connected to a different amplifier channel, each channel will see a 4-ohm load.

Power Handling: This woofer has a total RMS power rating of 500 watts and a total peak power rating of 1500 watts. Each voice coil carries an RMS power rating of 250 watts and a peak power rating of 750 watts.

Push Terminals: The push terminals are all located on one side of the woofer. The terminals will accept bare wire up to 8 gauge, pin connectors, or banana plugs.

Jumpers: Included with the woofer are two voice coil terminal jumpers. These jumpers allow you to easily wire the voice coils in parallel (for a 2-ohm load) or series (for an 8-ohm load).

Enclosure Compatibility

Recommended Sealed Box Volume: The recommended sealed box sizes range from 0.5 cu/ft to 0.8 cu/ft. Within this range, the ideal size is 0.65 cu/ft.

Recommended Vented Box Volume: The recommended vented box sizes range from 0.6 cu/ft to 1.25 cu/ft. Within this range, the ideal size is 1.0 cu/ft. A slot port with the following dimensions should be used with the 1.0 cu/ft enclosure: Width=11", Height=1", Length=22". If you cannot use a slot port in your enclosure, the equivalent diameter port diameter is 3.75 inches.

Manual Correction

Enclosure Volumes: The enclosure recommendations have been updated since the manual was printed. The recommended enclosure volumes in the Crutchfield database were obtained directly from Alpine.
