Our take on the Alpine SWR-10D2

by John Pollard
Alpine

What's a component sub and why would I want one?

A component sub is simply a speaker that's designed to reproduce bass once it's installed in a compatible enclosure. Think about the impact of a movie soundtrack in a big theater or even in your own home HDTV setup. A component sub can add the same kind of power to the music in your car. And a car sub is not all about the boom that you hear on a street corner (although that's cool too) - you can pair a component sub with your choice of enclosure to get bass just the way you like it, from tight and punchy to fat and loose. And once you experience music in your car with a well-tuned subwoofer, you'll never go back.

Maximum bass output

Alpine Authorized Online Dealer

Alpine's Type-R subwoofers will bring big bass to just about any vehicle. The SWR-10D2 10" sub features a cone made from Kevlar® treated pulp — the same material used to make bulletproof vests — and its durable HAMR Santoprene™ surround allows for huge amounts of excursion. This sub was built for bassheads that want the best of both worlds: accurate response and otherworldly thump.

Bring on the power

The SWR-10D2 can handle an astounding 1000 watts of RMS power, so be sure to choose a suitable amplifier as these bass monsters definitely want lots of power. Its dual oversized 2-ohm voice coils offer the wiring flexibility you'll appreciate as your system changes and grows, so you can always pull maximum power from your amp. It works well in sealed and ported enclosures so you can choose what kind of bass you want to hear and feel.

Note: If you are wiring this DVC sub for lower impedance, make sure that your amp is compatible.

Features

Kevlar Reinforced Pulp Cone: This Alpine Type-R subwoofer has a two-piece structural parabolic Kevlar reinforced pulp cone. Kevlar adds strength and tear resistance to the woofer cone while maintaining the benefits of a pulp cone design. There is also an oversized inverted poly-mica dust cap, which increases rigidity and virtually eliminates cone distortion at extreme volume levels.

HAMRS: The woofer features a High Amplitude Multi Roll Surround (HAMRS), made of Santoprene, that allows a large linear excursion and greater SPL. The HAMRS design allows extreme excursions without sacrificing valuable cone area.

Progressive Spider: The progressive Conex spider has reinforced layer tinsel leads to ensure reliable and consistent control of the tinsel leads and eliminate any mechanical noise or interference often seen in high excursion cone designs.

Compound Radius Curve Pole Geometry: Alpine's Patented Compound Radius Curve pole geometry ensures a symmetrical magnetic field, while optimizing flux density to reduce distortion and further improve power handling and output.

Oversized Voice Coil: The oversized (65mm), high-temperature, 4-layer dual voice coils offer increased power handling to 1000W RMS / 3000W Peak.

Dual Voice Coils: For system flexibility, the woofer has two 2-ohm voice coils. When the voice coils are wired in parallel, the woofer presents a 1-ohm load. When the voice coils are wired in series, the woofer presents a 4-ohm load.

Spring Terminals: The spring post terminals are all located on one side of the woofer. The terminals will accept bare wire up to 8 gauge, pin connectors, or banana plugs.

Jumpers: Included with the woofer are two voice coil terminal jumpers. These jumpers allow you to easily wire the voice coils in parallel (for a 1-ohm load) or series (for a 4-ohm load).

Enclosure Compatibility

Sealed Box Volume: The recommended sealed box volume ranges from 0.48 cubic feet to 0.93 cubic feet, with 0.58 cubic feet being the ideal size.

Ported Box Volume: The recommended ported box volume ranges from 0.83 cubic feet to 1.38 cubic feet. The ideal size is 1.1 cubic feet, using a slot port measuring 10" (W) x 1" (H) x 20" (L).

Great Sub

Written By ryan, aliquippa pa on Wednesday, May 01, 2013

When first hooked the Alpine up it just amazed me how bass this 10 could produce, unfortunately I unknowingly paired the wrong ohm loads with the amp and ruined it about a month later, but I can easily say go for it if you want really deep bass that hits every note.
Pros:
everything

Alpine type r 10d2

Written By Dat-OD, atlanta,GA on Saturday, July 21, 2012

This is the best 10" sub ever. I had a 10" MA Audio with a giant magnet, the same size as the sub itself and I thought it was loud. After replacing it with the alpine and kept everything on the same setting, this alpine felt like it was twice as loud. It's shaking my whole car. Very clean bass. Very amazing for a 10 inch. I'm pushing it with a 1000rms class D TMA amp made by JL audio in an Obcon GZ hidden chamber box. Worth the money. Words can't explain!!!
Pros:
best 10' for the money.
Cons:
None

Alpine SWR-10D2

Written By Jason, Waynesboro, Va on Sunday, June 03, 2012

I bought this sub to be paired with a Profile AP 2000. Bridged @ 4 ohms the amp puts out 960RMS. The sub was replacing 2 infinity kappa 12" subs. I have a growning family and needed to reclaim some trunk space in my G6. Purchased this sub on 5/29 and enjoyed it a lot but just didn't quite have the deep punch that I had with 2 12" subs. Gave it a few days to see if it could grow on me & after comparing box sizes etc and realizing that the space & cost would be minimal to upgrade I decided to go to the SWR-12D2. I switched it out on 6/3. I spend a good part of the day putting the new sub through its paces and was unable to find any type of music that the 12D2 didn't preform at.. For the extra $50 between the box & sub it is well worth it to invest in the 12D2.
Pros:
Ample power handling and responsive.
Cons:
Leaves a little to be desired for the broad spectrum of music that many listen too.

Alpine SWR-10D2

Written By JOHN, Richmond, VA on Tuesday, May 15, 2012

I bought two of these a few weeks ago and didn't realize that they've been improves since the prior versions of this subwoofer. If you are unaware, this subwoofer is essentially the Type X of the previous generation, which is fine by me, this subwoofer is amazing to put it simply. Have yet to have any issues with it so far. I have 2200w RMS going to these subs and they take it all day. they don't even get warm. I would highly recommend this sub to someone who wants some great bass, and doesn't want to spend tons of money on a subwoofer.
Pros:
Great price, power handling, size
Cons:
None that I can think of. lol

1 question already asked

What else do I need to buy if I get two of these subs? And do I need to buy D4's or D2's? [ Brooke  Jun 23, 2014 ]
3 answers
  • You need to power them,I ran a alpine 500 rms to each Voice coil( 4 amps total). I went with d2 so I can power them with 500 rms at a decent price .4ohm may be more stable ,but I am not sure.i don't regret getting them they hit much harder than my s series,I would go for it!! [ ROBERT   Jun 25, 2014 ]
  • If you buy two of these alpine sub's, you will need to purchase an amplifier as well. Once you decide if you wanna go with the D4 or the D2's them decide on the amp. If you go with a D4 then you will wanna buy and amplifier that will match the 4 ohms of the sub woofer. Preferably a class D mono amplifier. This goes the same with if you go with the D2 alpine. D2 is @ 2 ohms so same here, I would recommend a class D mono amplifier as well. Now deciding between a D2 or D4 is on ohms. D4 requires more power to make the subwoofer preform while a D2 requires power but not as much. I went with the D2 10" alpine type r. If you were to go with two of those ones I would prefer getting and amp that is at least 1200 watt RMS. But overall first decide which subs you want either the D2's or D4's. After deciding on that make a decision on a class D mono amplifier that is rated and matches the ohms selection specifically from the sub (2 or 4 ohms). I definitely would stay with an alpine class d mono amplifier just to stay with the same brand so you won't have worries of something not matching up. I know for a fact you won't be disappointed purchasing an alpine type r subwoofer. These are well put together and can take a beating. I hope this helps good luck. [ Tyler Joseph   Jun 24, 2014 ]
  • You'll need an amplifier and an amp install kit. I recommend the Alpine MRX-M110 amp. If you have this amp go with the D2's. That makes it two Ohm capable. If you go with another amp you'll have to check the specs to see if it supports 2 ohm or 4 ohm. Hope this helps. Good choice of speaker by the way. [ BRANDON   Jun 23, 2014 ]
