Alpine Authorized Online Dealer

Built for heavy-duty sound, Alpine's SWR-1222D 12" subwoofer delivers high-impact bass that you can hear and feel. Alpine has taken the best features from its previous Type-R Series subs and added advanced technology for ground-pounding power and superb accuracy.

Alpine uses the material used in bulletproof vests to reinforce the pulp cone, so so it won't buckle under hard play. A rubber surround helps to maximize cone travel for deep bass, while withstanding the decay that can destroy a speaker. A redesigned thermal management system and aluminum airflow motor cover shed heat quickly for efficient operation and better power handling.

The dual 2-ohm voice coils handle lots of power while offering system wiring flexibility. An aluminum die-cast frame provides a secure, non-resonant housing that won't color your bass. The SWR-1222D works well in either sealed or ported enclosures.

Note: If you are wiring this DVC sub for lower impedance, make sure that your amp is compatible. Most car amplifiers are stable down to 2 ohms in standard mode, or 4 ohms in bridged operation.

What's a component sub and why would I want one?

A component sub is simply a speaker that's designed to reproduce bass once it's installed in a compatible enclosure. Think about the impact of a movie soundtrack in a big theater or even in your own home HDTV setup. A component sub can add the same kind of power to the music in your car. And a car sub is not all about the boom that you hear on a street corner (although that's cool too) - you can pair a component sub with your choice of enclosure to get bass just the way you like it, from tight and punchy to fat and loose. And once you experience music in your car with a well-tuned subwoofer, you'll never go back.

If you want a smooth bass that you can hear and feel this sub is for you. This sub is not a noise maker like some subs i have heard all rattle and no sound.

Pros: easy to install , and a smooth sound.

Cons: As it is a good sound you need the power to push it and your cabin must have a good sound so that bass will over power the vocals

For the price this sub is the best you can get. I have two in a ported box tuned to 33hz with a kenwood KAC-X1R and it sounds amazing. This sub the perfect combination of spl, sq, and price. If you want the best bang for your buck this is the sub for you.

Alpine's Type R's are bad

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

lets just say I have had alot of subs in my day i went from two 12"Kicker comp VR's and with just a 500 watt mono fosgate amp I hit 138.9 at a local competion with a 8 gauge power wire. the kickers got sold and I wanted much more sub and doing my research I chose Alpine for the price and good quality i have two 12" Type R (dual 2ohm) in a cheap box with and old school Rockford Fosgate BD1000 running the amp at 14.4 volts(4 gauge power wire) at a 2 ohm load and it make's your skull hurt
estimate putting out close to 1300 watts rms and the Alpine's pound like no other I am hitting right around 144 db according to the local audio shop wich tried to get me to buy some JBL's for twice the price. any ways I also have an Alpine V12 1000 mono block I thinking of getting 1 Type R 15" to add to the maddness and feed that 15" with that 1000w Alpine. In my Opinion Alpine's are great quality at an affordable price and Crutchfeild Kicks Butt as well.............................Mike-in Oklahoma-car audio capitol of the USA

Extreme SPL

Written By Matt, Lake Charles, LA on Saturday, June 27, 2009

I am a huge fan of Alpine Type R subwoofers. Over my 13 years as a Installer/fabricator I've put many subwoofer's through extreme tests and by far this particular Alpine subwoofer has met my mark. Using only one of them in a custom fiberglass ported enclosure tuned to 32hz. I netted 162.0 Decibles in the Midnight Fantasy 08' SPL Contest. I failed to mention I ran this with a PDX 1.1000. All I can say is Alpine outperformed every other subwoofer in its class, not to mention subwoofers above it's class. This is the best bargain for what you get.

Middle of the road

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Burned out the voice coil in my Polk sub on a long rough road trip. Needed something that would fit the existing small enclosed box I had the Polk unit in <1cf.

Alpine SWR-1222D looked to fit the specs I needed and was slightly cheaper than the Polk unit I was replacing. Got it in less than 1 week from Crutchfield, jumpered and installed in less than 10 min.

Doesn't hit as hard as the Polk unit I had even prior to the Polks very extended break in period. Hopefully the Alpine sub opens up a bit more after break in and further tuning. Puts out decent mid bass but parts are not vibrating off my car like they should be.

These subs are terrible. The surround completely ripped apart after only about two months of use. I had 2 of these in a sealed box and both of them are now junk because of the cheap surround.

Powered by a 1200 rms watts kenwood gouriki amp. I picked up only 1 sub because Im short money. After bumping my music on the road, it sound good at low volume till i turn em up and it just don't sound as clean anymore. Following day I realize it didnt sound good because it was rattling my trunk soo much i couldnt hear the clean bass! and believe me these subs are clean(sealed box) so after i save enough money to get the other type r..ima have to save up even more to dyamate the heck outa my trunk (01 accord sedan). Having just one type r intalled, my trunk rattled like it wants to pop open =D

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I got 2 of these in custom boxes that I made. When I first cranked them up the sounded amazing, but of course you have to "break them in". Once they get broken in they POUND. I'm pushing them with a 1000wrms amp and the gain is only about half up and will still blow you away. AWESOME SUBS FROM A QUALITY MANUFACTURE!

Also this would be my 2nd transaction with Crutchfield and it was smooth as a baby's bottom. A+ Crutchfield

served me well

i love these subs they hit hard and last forever. but if u get one type x 12"
its so much better for around the same money as two of these. i would
never NOT recomend these i just feel like the type x setup is the better way
to go.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I recently just got 2 of these subs in a sealed box at the recommended .85
cu. ft. paired up with a V power 1000 watt RMS @ 2 ohm amp and my
Pioneer HU is at -11 and these things still shake my rear view!!! Once they
get broken in I'll really crank them up and see what they can do.

Great Subs for their SQ and SPL!!!!

This Subwoofer offers you some amazing value...

Written By Anonymous, windsor junction NS on Sunday, February 15, 2009

from experience of owning tones of subwoofers in the past this subwoofer offers you the best bang for your buck. you get some serious vibrations in your trunk i have owned other subs such as the JL Audio- W1v2, W3v2, W3v3. Kicker- comp, comp VR, L7. also a bunch of cheaper brands like MTX, Pioneer, sony, Infinity, Rockford Fosgate, this subwoofer gives you tight dynamic bass, and the high amplitude multi surround makes for some wicked excursion (more movement more Bass) these subs produce that nice SPL your looking for. dont be a fool and pay the big bucks for JL Audio. there only getting there nice sound threw a Alpine headunit anyways. look at all jl's show cars. good job alpine for making another serious product.

The most crisp and sound bass ever!!! I have wired up four different audio and visual systems into my vehicles, and by far, this sub has the most "knock" and is incredible at rounding out the sound to my vahicle's system. Highly recommend purchasing it.

I own a 2000 pontiac grand prix and have replaced all interior speakers with infinity reference which are amazing. I first started off with two 12 kicker comps powered by a 500.1 amp. Those speakers provided really good bass for the price however i was looking for something a little more powerful with deeper, more powerful bass. After i did a little bit of comparing and researching i decided to get a pair of these. The difference in the sound was amazing. The sound was more powerful, louder, and above all i had the true bass sound i was looking for. I decided to break these in with the same tma 500 which are great amps and are a product of JL audio. This amp was good to break them in but these breast are power hungry. I am currently awaiting the Alpine PDX-1.1000, which will satisify the rms of these and power these to their true potential. I recommend these speakers to anyone wanting amazing breath taking bass. I got what i wanted while underpowering these subs and i know i will be more than satisfied with the new amp. I CAN'T WAIT!! Get you some...

I bought 2 of these Type R subwoofers. I first had them in a ported box, with 1.67 cubic feet per sub, the bass was loud but very muddy. I got a sealed box with .90 cubic foot per sub and let me tell you, the clarity is a huge difference between sealed and ported. My music sounds so clear now with the sealed box and the bass still will shake all my mirrors off. These subs are amazing and extremely good quality. I recommend them to anyone wanting something to really rattle their car.

All they can say is

Written By Blake, IA on Saturday, June 21, 2008

I'll start by sayin that i hooked up a friend with TWO rockford fosgate Power 15s and my ONE "12 Type R compares right up beside them! I've got mine hooked up to a profile 1000 2 ch. amp and it's perfect for my sub. got this thing hooked up just the other day and had a buddy ride along with me and i'll say this if you're planning on talking to your buddy beside you while you turn this sub up in your ride then change your plans. This thing hits like crazy. i've only had my music turned up to 25 out 40 and at that level its hard to take a deep breath. Get this sub. People will think you've got a few 15s. There is no dissapointment with these subs. Thanks to Alpine.

What a difference 2 voice-coils makes. Before I upgraded to these monsters I had 2 Sony 12's in a non-ported box and to be honest the bass was below average. Now after putting 2 of these bad boys in a bandbass box with just over 300 watts RMS going to each I hafta say I think I've reached the max bass potential that my head can take lol Now I can't wait to get a more powerful amp so eventually I can go completely deaf and so my car falls apart!! Great subs, great quality, and for a bargain of a price..get yourself a couple of these no joke.

Written By no, Lafayette, Louisiana on Monday, February 18, 2008

Yea it is a very good speaker, I would recomend it for anybody, but I blew one of mines. I had it on a Bazooka 1500 which was putting out 1000 RMS and the speaker is done. I willl have to go with the type x's now

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Previosly i had 2 infinity kappa perfect 12.1's in the trunk of my '93 mercedes-benz 300E powered by an infinity 611A (657W RMS) and it was clean and clear sounding but didnt have much low end for lack of a better term. So I upgraded to these type R's and a JBL 1201.1II amp giving them a total of 1114W @ 2-ohms. What a difference.
The type R's are amazingly just about as clean and clear (almost) as the infinitys but hit oh so much harder. On "Soul Survivor" by Young Jeezy feat. Akon my steering wheel visibly shakes and my windows rattle in the doors. My rear window brake light cover already vibrated apart and i'm sure its not the last damage these monsters will do. They are in a vented box, 1.65 ft cubed each side.
Right out of the box you can tell the high build quality of these. They look great and sound even better.
A tip- get at least a cap and if possible a high performance battery and/or upgraded alternator, these things beg for more juice.

Bass Head..

Kevlar Reinforced Pulp Cone: This Alpine Type-R subwoofer has a Kevlar reinforced pulp cone. Kevlar adds strength and tear resistance to the woofer cone while maintaining the benefits of a pulp cone design. There is also an oversized inverted dust cap of the same material, which increases rigidity and virtually eliminates distortion at extreme volume levels.

HAMRS: The woofer features a High Amplitude Multi Roll Surround (HAMRS), made of injection molded Santoprene, that allows for an incredible amount of linear excursion and greater SPL.

Mirrored Progressive Nomex Spiders: This subwoofer has twin mirrored progressive Nomex spiders for added stability and mechanical durability. The custom progressive rolls gives the woofer a longer, more linear stroke with maximum centering and restoring force. Special edge control design and Nomex construction provide excellent tear resistance, strength and long-term reliability. The woofer has integrated tinsel speaker leads that are woven into the spiders for the one-sided terminal layout.

Cast Aluminum Frame: The woofer is mounted to a custom cast aluminum frame for added strength. This high mass frame also dissipates heat quickly to make it an integral part of the woofer's thermal management system.

Heat Transfer Plate: This subwoofer contains an integrated heat transfer plate that is thermally coupled to the voice coil. This plate pulls heat away from the voice coil and transfers it to the cast aluminum frame, achieving up to 20% additional power handling, and better reliability.

Magnetically Optimized Motor Structure: Through Alpine's advanced magnetic circuit design, this woofer offers better sound quality, and a higher sensitivity and power handling capability:

  • Compound Radius Curve Pole Geometry: This patent-pending design intensifies the magnetic field for higher SPL and lower distortion. The magnetic field is balanced over a wider area for better control at high excursion.
  • Extra Length Extended Pole: The extra long pole piece provides additional surface to capture radiated heat for additional power handling.
  • Extra Thick Top Plate: The extra thick top plate keeps more windings in the magnetic gap for better control.
  • Dual Stacked Magnets: The dual stacked magnets provide the powerful magnetic energy and extra depth for high SPL and maximum control.
  • Bumped Back Plate: This "bottomless" design provides extra room for longer cone excursions.
  • Optimally Saturated Pole: The optimally saturated pole reduces magnetically induced heat by eliminating eddy currents throughout the voice coil stroke, and evens flux distribution to eliminate "hot spots."

Multi-Stage Ventilation System: The SWR-1222D has a multi-stage ventilation system with the following features:

  • Cone/Voice Coil Junction Venting: The unique parabolic cone and voice coil attachment piece help to pull cool air into the motor structure.
  • Spider Plateau/Leg Vent System: Two vertical slits are cut into each of the five "legs" of the basket below the spider to allow cool air to flow in and heated air to flow out.
  • Dual Flare Pole Vent: Another part of the thermal management system is the unique dual flare design of the pole vent. This maximizes the flow of cooler air to the voice coil, and results in better power handling.

Dual Voice Coils: For increased system flexibility, the woofer has two 2-ohm voice coils. When the voice coils are wired in parallel with each other, the woofer presents a 1-ohm mono load. When the voice coils are wired in series with each other, the woofer presents an 4-ohm mono load. In addition, each coil may be connected to a different amplifier channel and each channel will see a 2-ohm load.

Power Handling: This woofer has a total RMS power rating of 500 watts and a total peak power rating of 1500 watts. Each voice coil carries an RMS power rating of 250 watts and a peak power rating of 750 watts.

Push Terminals: The push terminals are all located on one side of the woofer. The terminals will accept bare wire, pin connectors, banana connectors, and dual banana connectors.

Jumpers: The woofer is equipped with two voice coil connection jumpers. These jumpers allow you to wire the voice coils in parallel (for a 2-ohm load) or series (for an 8-ohm load).

Enclosure Compatibility

Recommended Sealed Box Volume: The sealed box sizes recommended by Alpine range from 0.57 cu/ft to 1.0 cu/ft. Within this range, the ideal size recommended by Alpine is 0.85 cu/ft, so this is the enclosure recommended by Crutchfield.

Recommended Vented Box Volume: The vented box sizes recommended by Alpine range from 0.75 cu/ft to 2.0 cu/ft. Within this range, the ideal size recommended by Alpine is 1.7 cu/ft, so this is the enclosure recommended by Crutchfield. A slot port with the following dimensions should be used with the 1.7 cu/ft enclosure: W = 12", H = 1.25", L = 21". If you cannot use a slot port in your enclosure, you will need a port tube with the following dimensions: Diameter = 3", L = 9.9".

Manual Correction

Recommended Enclosure Volumes: The manual incorrectly lists the recommended enclosure volumes for this subwoofer. The recommended enclosure volumes in the Crutchfield database were obtained directly from Alpine.
