Our take on the Alpine SWR-1242D

by Steven Johnson
Alpine

What's a component sub and why would I want one?

A component sub is simply a speaker that's designed to reproduce bass once it's installed in a compatible enclosure. Think about the impact of a movie soundtrack in a big theater or even in your own home HDTV setup. A component sub can add the same kind of power to the music in your car. And a car sub is not all about the boom that you hear on a street corner (although that's cool too) - you can pair a component sub with your choice of enclosure to get bass just the way you like it, from tight and punchy to fat and loose. And once you experience music in your car with a well-tuned subwoofer, you'll never go back.

Alpine Authorized Online Dealer

Big and bad and built for heavy-duty sound, Alpine's SWR-1242D 12" subwoofer delivers high-impact bass that you can hear and feel. Alpine has taken the best features from its previous SWR Series subs and added the hottest technology for ground-pounding power and superb accuracy.

The pulp cone has been reinforced with Kevlar® (the material used in bulletproof vests) for extra rigidity, so it won't buckle under hard play. A rubber surround helps to maximize cone travel for deep bass, while withstanding the decay that can destroy a speaker. A redesigned thermal management system and aluminum airflow motor cover shed heat quickly for efficient operation and better power handling.

The 2" dual 4-ohm voice coils are big enough to handle lots of power while offering system wiring flexibility. The tinsel leads are virtually unbreakable — they're woven into the dual progressive Nomex spiders. An aluminum diecast frame provides a secure, non-resonant housing. The SWR-1242D is designed for use in sealed or ported enclosures.

Note: If you are wiring this DVC sub for lower impedance, make sure that your amp is compatible. Most car amplifiers are stable down to 2 ohms in standard mode, or 4 ohms in bridged operation.

Features

Kevlar Reinforced Pulp Cone: This Alpine Type-R subwoofer has a Kevlar reinforced pulp cone. Kevlar adds strength and tear resistance to the woofer cone while maintaining the benefits of a pulp cone design. There is also an oversized inverted dust cap of the same material, which increases rigidity and virtually eliminates distortion at extreme volume levels.

HAMRS: The woofer features a High Amplitude Multi Roll Surround (HAMRS), made of injection molded Santoprene, that allows for an incredible amount of linear excursion and greater SPL.

Mirrored Progressive Nomex Spiders: This subwoofer has twin mirrored progressive Nomex spiders for added stability and mechanical durability. The custom progressive rolls gives the woofer a longer, more linear stroke with maximum centering and restoring force. Special edge control design and Nomex construction provide excellent tear resistance, strength and long-term reliability. The woofer has integrated tinsel speaker leads that are woven into the spiders for the one-sided terminal layout.

Cast Aluminum Frame: The woofer is mounted to a custom cast aluminum frame for added strength. This high mass frame also dissipates heat quickly to make it an integral part of the woofer's thermal management system.

Heat Transfer Plate: This subwoofer contains an integrated heat transfer plate that is thermally coupled to the voice coil. This plate pulls heat away from the voice coil and transfers it to the cast aluminum frame, achieving up to 20% additional power handling, and better reliability.

Magnetically Optimized Motor Structure: Through Alpine's advanced magnetic circuit design, this woofer offers better sound quality, and a higher sensitivity and power handling capability:

  • Compound Radius Curve Pole Geometry: This patent-pending design intensifies the magnetic field for higher SPL and lower distortion. The magnetic field is balanced over a wider area for better control at high excursion.
  • Extra Length Extended Pole: The extra long pole piece provides additional surface to capture radiated heat for additional power handling.
  • Extra Thick Top Plate: The extra thick top plate keeps more windings in the magnetic gap for better control.
  • Dual Stacked Magnets: The dual stacked magnets provide the powerful magnetic energy and extra depth for high SPL and maximum control.
  • Bumped Back Plate: This "bottomless" design provides extra room for longer cone excursions.
  • Optimally Saturated Pole: The optimally saturated pole reduces magnetically induced heat by eliminating eddy currents throughout the voice coil stroke, and evens flux distribution to eliminate "hot spots."

Multi-Stage Ventilation System: The SWR-1242D has a multi-stage ventilation system with the following features:

  • Cone/Voice Coil Junction Venting: The unique parabolic cone and voice coil attachment piece help to pull cool air into the motor structure.
  • Spider Plateau/Leg Vent System: Two vertical slits are cut into each of the five "legs" of the basket below the spider to allow cool air to flow in and heated air to flow out.
  • Dual Flare Pole Vent: Another part of the thermal management system is the unique dual flare design of the pole vent. This maximizes the flow of cooler air to the voice coil, and results in better power handling.

Dual Voice Coils: For increased system flexibility, the woofer has two 4-ohm voice coils. When the voice coils are wired in parallel with each other, the woofer presents a 2-ohm mono load. When the voice coils are wired in series with each other, the woofer presents an 8-ohm mono load. In addition, each coil may be connected to a different amplifier channel and each channel will see a 4-ohm load.

Power Handling: This woofer has a total RMS power rating of 500 watts and a total peak power rating of 1500 watts. Each voice coil carries an RMS power rating of 250 watts and a peak power rating of 750 watts.

Push Terminals: The push terminals are all located on one side of the woofer. The terminals will accept bare wire, pin connectors, banana connectors, and dual banana connectors.

Jumpers: The woofer is equipped with two voice coil connection jumpers. These jumpers allow you to wire the voice coils in parallel (for a 2-ohm load) or series (for an 8-ohm load).

Enclosure Compatibility

Recommended Sealed Box Volume: The sealed box sizes recommended by Alpine range from 0.57 cu/ft to 1.0 cu/ft. Within this range, the ideal size recommended by Alpine is 0.85 cu/ft, so this is the enclosure recommended by Crutchfield.

Recommended Vented Box Volume: The vented box sizes recommended by Alpine range from 0.75 cu/ft to 2.0 cu/ft. Within this range, the ideal size recommended by Alpine is 1.7 cu/ft, so this is the enclosure recommended by Crutchfield. A slot port with the following dimensions should be used with the 1.7 cu/ft enclosure: W = 12", H = 1.25", L = 21". If you cannot use a slot port in your enclosure, you will need a port tube with the following dimensions: Diameter = 3", L = 9.9".

Manual Correction

Recommended Enclosure Volumes: The manual incorrectly lists the recommended enclosure volumes for this subwoofer. The recommended enclosure volumes in the Crutchfield database were obtained directly from Alpine.

Probably the best sub you can get for the money. Give it enough watts and it'll keep you satisfied. Two of these would make your ears bleed.

Loud but not impressed

Written By Hoogie, Washington State on Tuesday, March 23, 2010

I had 2 of these in a custom built sealed enclosure, built to Alpine specs. Super loud but the sound quality was barely listenable. I was going deaf so I gave one away to a friend and put my remaining speaker in a ported enclosure, which is still loud and has a little better sound quality, but not the kind of sound I was expecting from a sub at this price. My Infinity Reference sub and my cheap pioneer sub I had previously had much higher sound quality running off all the same gear. If you want insanely loud go for it, do not buy expecting good sound quality.

BOOM!!!

Written By Anonymous, San Diego, CA on Tuesday, March 02, 2010
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

After being without a system in my car for 12 years, I spent about a week review 10" and 12" subs. My boss is an audiophile and had me get all the spec sheets for 8 different subs and ran them through a software program calculating what each speaker could do maximized specs for custom sized boxes for both ported and sealed.

The 12" Alpine Type R was his recommendation for a 1.75 ft^3 box with a 3" port with length of 11.69". I made the box with the specs he gave me and this thing hits hard!!! Oh my, was I impressed! I'm pushing 500W RMS(250W RMS per voice coil) from Alpine MRP-M500 mono subwoofer amp. I have this baby in a 2004 hondacivic coupe and still have trunk space left over.

Crutchfield service was great and had everthing I needed from them! Would definately recommend this 12" sub to anyone who needs some bump within this price range.

Amuzing

Written By LS1Proud, Sacramento, CA on Wednesday, February 17, 2010

These subs can't be beat by many of the more expensive competitors. Some of the most amusing things I have read are the people that blew these subs up with amps that did not meet up to the power ratings of the sub. Funny that most don't seem to understand the concept of clipping. It is far easier to blow ANY sub with an amp that is underpowered for the subwoofer in question or speaker for that matter. Sealed is a great box for these subs, yet I have used these in dual-bandpass setups and had awesome results. I have been in the car audio industry for over 10 years now and think those that blew their subs should purchase another set and get an amp to match. Then make up your mind.

I have heard good and bad things about the Alpine Type-R. Let me be the one to tell you that this sub is amazing. It is everything that I was looking for in a
sub. It produces good clean bass. I am powering it with an Alpine M500 amp and it is in a ported box. It sounds amazing and I would definitely recommend this to anyone!

Affordable Killer Subwoofer

Written By Albie, Haverhill Ma on Thursday, January 07, 2010

Got one of these puppies in a Q-logic Type 2 ported box being fed by the older Alpine 450 mono, 400 watts at 2 ohms. This sucker has been pounding away in my truck for years now and I'm still impressed by the way it keeps thumping and thumping and thumping.. You would be hard pressed to find another subwoofer in this price bracket that could compete with Alpine's awesome design. Huge magnets, thick basket and a sturdy cone contubute to this. 500 watts is childsplay, I have a friend pumping almost 800 watts to this baby in a med. size sealed box, that always makes me lose my lunch. Ive been buying Alpine for over 16 years, time you do too!!

Amazing!!

Written By Jordan, Jackson, Mississippi on Friday, July 10, 2009

These subs pound and without sacrificing too much SQ. These are SQL subs so if you want loud without much distortion, this is the sub for you.. I have one powered by an alpine mrp-m850 (800 watts rms) in my infiniti i30. This things pounds. I can outdo people with double my money in the trunk. There are louder subs out there, many of which are much more expensive. And many of the subs that are louder than these are pure SPL subs which have no SQ.. (such as the l7's) so if you just like loud bass then yeah go for those, but type r's are so much better in my opinion. My friend can hear me from a mile away.. No exaggeration!! These subs handle more than their power rating also.. Going over their rating is not as big a deal as some make it out to be.. And underpowering your subs is almost worse than over-powering them. Yes, if you over-power or under-power you are running the risk of burning your voice coils.. but i'm confident that it will handle it.. These are some of the best subs out there.. And definitely the best out there in this price range. If you are going to get these.. please do not underpower them.. that would be such a sad sight to burn these up cause you dont have the extra cash to upgrade your amp. Anyway get these.. Trust me you wont be disappointed..

Exceptional Driver

Written By Wolfox, Dunnellon, FL on Sunday, May 31, 2009

This sub is mounted in a home made, hand built ported box, tuned for 34 Hz. and driven by an Alpine MRP-M500 class-D monoblock. Interior volume is just a tad over 1.7 CuFt. w/4" port. I had to get a little creative with the box shape and batting to get it to all fit within the measly cargo space behind the rear seats in a Blazer T-10. Coils loaded in parallel for a total of 2-ohms are hanging off that 500 Watt monoblock, all I can say is that I am very impressed. Clarity is on par with a sealed system, though sealed would arguable be better- but the port and box tuning allows for controlled low end thumping that can be heard for blocks away. My musical tastes are wide and varied. Rock and disco hit hard without thrumming. Sustained bassnotes in Rap, R&B and electronica/techno are clear, precise and sharply defined without bogging down with drum hits embedded in the deep tones. And she rumbles and roars to the point that the rearview mirror is useless, body panels flex and glass bulges when watching a clip from "Coverfield" - you swear that the monster's going to catch you too!

For the money, the power, precision and the ability for this sub to sucker punch you and steal your lunch money is spot on. But get nerded up on enclosure deigns - She will rip your heart out and shake it off your own tailgate in a second in a properly tuned and made box. Yet at the same time bring out subtleties that will make you claw through your center console to hear that Beethoven CD next.

to a alpine pdx
1.600 it sounded
great. But i used to
always play my music
at really loud
volume so the sub
ended up blowing
out. When i popped
my trunk smoke was
coming out of the
sub. Maybe i was
unlucky or maybe
they can't handle
the power but it was

Great Subs

Written By richcneed, Brooklyn, Ny on Friday, April 03, 2009
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I've had this sub for a while now and it really hits hard. I always have lots of stuff rolling around in my trunk that my sub got damaged around the cone area and still plays great. I've never seen anything like this before because most subs would be useless after a damage like that. I purchased this sub based on the amount of positive reviews that i read and i'm not dissapointed. Being a Jamaican i listen to a lot of reggae & reggae dancehall and you need great subs to handle the deep baselines of the dancehall riddims. When it comes to subs all i can think of is Alpine which is great quality at a great price.

I've been waiting about 4 months to get 2 of these and an alpine pdx
1.1000 and all i can say is that for the hype i was giving them i was not
dissapointed. These things rattle my throat. I had them playing in front of
my girlfriends house for about 5 minutes before the cops came =]. I still
need to put them in a better box and these subs havent even passed
the "breaking in" stage. I cant wait to hear what they will sound like once i
put the gain past minimum. Great bang for your buck. ALPINE ALL THE WAY

Wow is all i can say about this speaker. If i could i would give it 6 stars. I have just 1 of these bad boys in a 2002 extended cab s10 and it is amazing. I have an Alpine M850 driving this at 2 ohms (800 Watts continuous). And it is a beast. If your wanting something that combines hard pounding bass and good clean sound quality this is the perfect subwoofer for you.

Alpine SWR-1242D

Written By Nick, Albuquerque, NM on Thursday, September 25, 2008

I had 2 12" Type-Rs in a ported box, and I thought they slammed pretty hard. Good SQ as well, really good response time. Fast double bass in rock sounded nice and clear, not like one muddy boom. And they slammed pretty hard with extended super lowend hits. I powered them with a Kicker ZX750.1 that was tested at 940W RMS.

I replaced them with a single Kicker L7 12" and it absolutely blows them away. If you can afford L7's you won't be dissapointed, they are incredible. All my buddies who have them have blow out their windows, I'm afraid to turn mine up that loud.

3-Way

Written By Steve, Ocala, Fl on Monday, September 01, 2008

I had two of these Type-R 12's hooked up in my Navigator and was getting some crazy bass, but my ZX1000.1 was only at half gain, so I purchased one more Type-R, and had a custom box built to individually port each woofer tuned at 35-37 hz then turned my gain up, and all I can say is wow!! These three subs sounds like I have a midget trying to kick his way out the back of my trunk. This is a good sounding woofer for the money, and I am very pleased that I didn't go with the Kicker CVR's because I got all I can handle with these. Remember, its not the name brand, its how you pair it up, and what amp you have to push the woofers, and I have found that Kicker amps go well with Alpine woofers. I am going to upgrade soon to the ZX1500.1 Stay tuned...

So Far Sooo Good

Written By David, Laf, LA on Tuesday, August 19, 2008

I have 1 12" in a 1.5 slotted box, powered by a ZX750 kicker amp, and I will say it hits better than the 2-12" clarions I used to have and not far from from the 2 JL W-3's, these were powered by an 11 year old alpine MRV1000 amp that just died out on me a couple of months ago, which led me to buy the kicker. I then immediately blew the clarions :)

Bottom line...worth the money, it sounds excellent. 2 of these or 1 type X for the same cash....would be a tough choice.

Best Subs I've Ever Had

Written By customvinyl, Halifax, N.S. on Saturday, July 05, 2008

The Alpine SWR-1242D's kick. I have 2 reverse mounted on a fiberglass box with a 1500watt Clarion mono block pushing them. They hit clean and hard. My Jimmy shakes down the road. My head liner clips keep shaking out!!!I didn't believe these subs would take the power of my amp but I am proved wrong ever time I get in my ride. I've sat side by side with a guy who had 5 kenwoods and an amp on each. Not to sound conceited but my sound was so much louder and cleaner than his!! I'd recommend these subs to anybody. Alpine has definatly out done themselves here.

Best Subwoofer Ever Used !!!!!!!!!!!!

Written By Radames, Salinas, Puerto Rico on Thursday, June 05, 2008

I've had this 12" Alpine Type-R for over a year now wired at 2 ohms in a
ported bandpass box 1.75cf powered by a sony amp 9000GTR and 900rms
and this setup i've cremated people with 2 and three 12" woofers. Spend
the money on a good woofer and you will not be disapointed. Alpine
ROCKS......

this thing bumps

Written By Rob, NJ on Monday, May 05, 2008
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I got one of these in my '99 Mazda in a bandpass box, (ya all i listen to in
my car is rap) powered by a kenwood KAC-9104D at 500 rms 4 ohms. Goes
along so good with the stock Bose speaks. Half volume this thing rattles
the mirrors, the trunk lid, n shakes my radar detector off. It BUMPS so hard,
its like some1s hitting the bak of your seat. Has the punch of two 12's and
accuracy of an infinity kappa perfect. my friends got 2 in his ram1500, which
is overkill, overwhelms the sound of anything else that aint bass. One is all
you need to make the block bump. The 9104D is the perfect amp for this
sub, matches the higher end of the subs rms rating, makes it punch so
beast, and its fan cooled. If your gonna get it installed locally, well
first of all dont, but if u r, order everything u need off crutchfield. Local
prices are so much higher, their wire kits alone cost me a benjy, n they took
4 n a half hours n installed a killswitch on my dash without letting me know
be4 hand, another benj n a half rite there. cost me a grand total. but i
highly recommend this sub its nasty.

GREAT BUY!!

Written By mosfet1967, PENSACOLA FLORIDA on Saturday, April 05, 2008

HOOKED A PAIR OF THESE TO A JL 1000/1 IN A SEALED BOX BIGGER THAN
RECOMMENDED ,1.3 ft PER
SUB, AND THEY SOUNDED GREAT. THEY ARE STIFF AS A BOARD WHEN NEW
SO IT TAKES AWHILE TO BREAK THEM IN SO BE PATIENT, AFTER A MONTH
OR TWO I WAS VERY PLEASED. AFTER TWO YEARS I CHANGED AMPS TO A
2000X CLASS A/B
AMP WHICH PROVIDES MORE THAN THEIR POWER RATING BUT THEY
HANDLE IT WITH NO PROBLEM.
THEY REALLY POUND AND WITH AWESMOME SOUND QUALITY
TO BOOT. YOU CAN'T FIND A BETTER SUB FOR THE PRICE

i got a pair of these in a ported box with a 1606D amp pushing them at 2 ohms.they pound in my explorer.unfortunetly two of the wires rattled loose on one of the subs and seized it up,but i found out just one of the subs can handle all the power of the amp without a problem.i am waiting for the other new sub to come in the mail and i am going to get another amp and really make them pound.

I just bough these subs not to long ago. I had 2 12" kicker comp an they used to beat pretty hard but atleast thats wat i though until i got 2 12" 4 om Alpine Type R 1500 watts man they hit so hard my trunk' s corner panles flex about 1/2 inch to a full inch. My head liner flexs so hard that when u put ur hand up to it it throws it right off. I have them in a fiber glass box with ported holes. With a 3 farid power cap an 1000.1 zx kicker 1 mono block an only have it turned up half way an its loud. People can hear me coming from arcossed town. I wont go back to useing any other sub ever again.

Serious Bass

Written By Rodney, Rineyville, Ky on Sunday, February 24, 2008

I purchased 2 of these subs back in around June or July 2007 and love them. I did have a Rockford Fosgate P550.2 amp hooked to them and they were in a carpeted sealed box until they ripped it apart. I know have a P1000-1BD from Rockford that pushes 1286 rms (Rockford puts a spec sheet with every amp telling the exact RMS and peak that it played and will play). I know have them in a ported box that I got from work (Best Buy). These are so powerful in my 93 Maxima, that it broke the 3rd brake light in my back window. These subs make my roof bow in and out and the truck sounds like its taking off from the car. My next addition is Dynamat.

I sure would love another P1000-1BD amp and 2 Alpine Type X subs though.

I do recommend these subs to anyone who wants a lot of beat in their trunk.

I've got one alpine type R hooked up to a kenwood KAC-9103D and all I can say is that it pounds. The bass is extremely clear and loud. I love it. It thumps hard on the high heart pounding bass and it can hit the lows very well. Alpine did this one right.

THIS SUB IS AMAZING!!!

Written By James, Greenville, SC on Thursday, October 11, 2007

I originally purchased a Kicker CompVR sub, but I decided it didn't sound clean enough for me so I went with this Alpine 12" Type-R. I am amazed at the clarity and quality of sound this sub puts out. It is sooo loud compared to other subs I have used and I will take anything you throw at it. The looks of this sub are amazing too, but just be prepared to do some weight lifting because this one sure is a heavy one! I am only pushing this sub with an Alpine V-Power 400 watt amp at 2 ohms and it hits harder than other subs I have heard with twice that amount of power! I HIGHLY RECOMMEND THIS SUB!!!

I had this sub hooked up to the m1005 in a box 2 cubes tuned to 32hz. this thing can get loud but lacks sound quality. on rap, it gets muddy but it can hit pretty hard. the bass also sounds thinner than my stereo integrity BM, i mean with the BM the bass sounded thicker.

KING KONG IN THE TRUNK!!!!

Written By Joey, Reserve, NM on Tuesday, July 31, 2007

All I can say is ouch, my ears are still ringing. I just hooked up an Apline PDX 1.1000 amplifier to two of the 12 inch Type R's and wow. On the first day I installed the amp and subs I decided to go for a test drive to see what this system could do well I had one cop follow me home, another cop called my house about three complaints and another cop told my brothers a fee days later that he thought his house was going to fall down when I drove by. Then last night I took my friend home and set off his car alarm twice. If this isn't impressive than I dont know what is. These subs are the real deal, and so is Alpine. I am now building an all alpine brand system and I love it. The only suggestion I have is do not waste your money on cheap off brand amps because these subs are the real deal, save up the money and buy one or two great amps and it will be the greatest invest you will ever make, thank you alpine.

Not all its hyped up to be, but still a solid choice

Written By memphis87, Chicago on Thursday, July 26, 2007

I purchased this just for fun with the money i had left over from book return at college to see what all the fuss was about. I hooked it up to my amp that puts out 500rms at 1.5-4ohms. had it in a ported box tuned to 34hz. size was 1.75cu ft. I broke the sub in over an 8hr period. I sat down and really gave it a good listen. playing all types of music, from country to rap to R&B. It is amazing at playing punchy bass, but for rap it didn't fair so well. It tended to sound muddy. Country was ok, but you shouldn't by a sub for country since there aren't to many bass lines anyways. If you listen to rock and hip hop, then this is a good buy. but if its rap you listen to i would look elsewhere. As for output, i was disappointed. I was expecting more out of it but it lacked in that department. For my next testing i placed it in a 1.1 cubic ft SEALED box. the sound quality jumped tremendously. It played great with all types of music, very smooth transitions. I suggest if you do by this sub, then put it in a sealed box. Alpines are known for there sound quality, and i know they thrive in sealed boxes. If you have the money i would suggest a type-x. I own 2 of those and they are by far sum of the best sounding subs that truely belt out the lows with authority

Awesome

Written By matthew1988, Valpo, IN on Friday, July 06, 2007

this sub is awesome. i love the sound. i had 2 pretty decent 10's in my car for a while instead of one of these alpines but then they started bugging me cause they were making my music sound kinda muddy. so i threw this 12'' alpine back in and i love it...again. i've heard a lot of people say if you like rock music to get 10's..and if you're into more bassy stuff like rap get 12's or something bigger..but i dunno man..i listen to a lot of rock and i love the way it sounds with this sub.its got good range, its super clear, and it nails the lows as well..i've got one in a dual ported box and my old sony in, but not wired up, on the other side just to fill the other side in and let the alpine knock it around..prlly adds a little sound..but i couldn't be happier with how this sub sounds..i run it with a amp (1920 watt peak, about 800 watt rms). i've only got the amp up about half way..and yea side note that amp is great i recommend that too...but basically get this sub. you won't regret it.

Type-R, The enclosure determines it's worth.

Written By Jeremy, Saginaw, MI on Monday, June 25, 2007

I have a love/hate relationship with these subs. I started out with them in a ported box that was within alpine spec range, and at high volume it could get loud but the bass was very uncontrolled. That's the hate part (In addition to smoking one with 600 watts, still not sure how that happened, as the other is fine with the same power being fed). At high volumes punchy bass was almost gone into just a series of hums...very loud hums that moved your hair, but not a great thing if you're into sound quality.

Here comes the love part. I built some nice 1.0 cf sealed boxes for them, and played around with the amount of polyfill inside, and now they're like "WOW". With one hooked up they move my mirrors with CLEAN bass, and with both hooked up they begin to move a lot of air in the cab / flex windows, etc. In fact 2 of them are killing my VW Jetta, I'm finding new rattles everyday. And to my surprise these subs still seem to hit their lo's pretty well in a sealed box. In the end I would say this is a great candidate in it's price range for anyone who wants decent sound quality at high volumes. Just seal it up tight!

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I purchased 1 of these subs for my system a couple of days ago and it really surprised me how good it sounds. I couldn't have chosen a better sub to fit my needs. I wanted something that sounded clear and crisp but still hit the lows and rattle my bones. I really like this sub because you can barely hear it outside the car but once you get in, it's like a whole nother world. I have this sub wired up to 2ohms in a sealed box hooked up to the Audiobahn A8005DN amp and this sub beats down on my car so hard that I swear it sounds like i have 2 12's in my trunk. Even when I barely turn up the volume, it still hits hard. I am very happy with this purchase and would recommend this sub and Crutchfield's wonderful service and excellent staff to anyone!!!

QUALITY!

Written By Drummerboy, Canada on Friday, May 04, 2007

This is one truly great/amazing sub. It's not the clearest sounding, and it dosen't produce the most SPL, but for the money it does both exceptionally well. Hooked up to an Alpine PDX 1.1000 in a sealed box, this thing just sucks up all the power I can throw at it despite it's rated power level. Excellent controlled sound quality at regular listening volumes, but when you want it to pound, crank it up and it'll shake your fillings out without complaining. Just make sure you soundproof the heck out of your car to get the best results. Otherwise you're NOT gonna hear what this sub is really capable of!

P.S. You really need a good powerful amp to get the most out of this sub. This thing can take far more power than the published rating.

My system is insane. Its louder than my bud's with 5 12" subs sealed. this sub slams so hard it gave me a heart murmur.

Alpine SWR-1242D

Written By Brad, Racine, WI on Sunday, February 25, 2007

I got these subs to replace my garbage subwoofers and I am very happy i decided on them instead of the RF P3's. I also got a huge disscount on them so i could afford to get the alpine pdx 1.1000 amp. The first day i got the subs I installed them into my box and connected my old amp that went with the old subs( 460w maxx 2 way dual amp), the dual amp was only pushing 300w at 4ohms bridged so i was only getting 150w or less to each sub and the alpine subs still hurt my head. When I connected the new alpine amp the sound quality and bass responce was amazing, i reconend these subs to anyone whos on a budget and wnts their head to hurt when the music is turned up!

Great Sub

Written By Chet, Rochester, MA on Thursday, January 04, 2007

I have 2 of these 12" Aplines being pushed by 2 mono-channel kenwood amps, each pumping about 500 RMS into each sub. THEY HIT HARD... REALLY HARD AND CLEAN.

First off I built a small ported box hoping I would be able to save some room in my trunk, that didn't happen. The small box was holding back my subs and I had alot of port turbulence. You need to have both the recommonded box volume and port volume, or they just don't sound good at all. After building a larger ported box they POUNDED.

The only reason why this sub is not a 5 out of 5 is because it really dosen't hit highs well at all. This also might be becuase I am used to unreal lows!

I bought 2 Alpine Type R 12" with 2 V power Alpine amps that push 400 watts, so I had 800 watts total and 400 watts going to each subwoofer, I gotta say these things banged really hard. I had 2 power acoustik subs (FUBAR 12W) before this hooked up to the same amp setup and they wern't nearly asloud at all, these things are shaking my trunk in a ported q logic box and the spoiler of my grand prix is about to come off. Anyhow love these defentily worth buying them or any other alpine product.

Amazing, Powerful Subwoofer

Written By EricAudiA6, Hillsborough, NJ on Monday, October 23, 2006

I'm new to the whole "car audio system" thing, especially since I'm only 17, but I can say this subwoofer is really powerful. I have it powered by a Kenwood KAC-8152D amplifier and have it enclosed in a Q-logic ported/sealed box. At first, having read all the reviews, I ported the box and all I can say is WOW! MASSIVE BASS, and I mean, MASSIVE BASS. In the trunk of my Audi A6, it was rattling the trunk lid. I turned the gain down almost all the way and the bass was still insane. So finally I decided to seal the enclosure (whats nice about the Q-logic, is that you can switch between ported and sealed). And I know all the other reviews say to port the box but after sealing it, I cranked up my sterio and all I heard was CLEAN, CRISP, ACCURATE BASS. If you're looking for a powerful sub, go with this one. However, if all you want is a little addition to you're existing stereo, I would go with a little less power...THIS THING IS A BEAST.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I bought four of these subwoofers one month ago. They sound amazing with the rest of my system. My two Alpine amps power these subs more than enough. The only thing I was disappointed about was that one of them would not sit right in the box because the mounting bracket was bent. One of the best things you can do with these subs is sound proof them with Dynamat I strongly suggest that you do. They sound perfect in a ported box I cant turn up my radio past 15 in my Tahoe. A great buy.

Awesome sub

Written By Swain, Conway, AR on Friday, October 13, 2006

I recently purchased this sub to replace a 10" Infinity Perfect 10.1d. I needed a sub that could handle a little more power. This sub definitley fit my "bass needs" better than the Infinity. It hits hard and deep. It's great. I've got it in a Q-logic type 2 1.25 cubic feet box (ported) and paired with a A8000T amp. It sounds amazing. Great, loud bass but not too overbearing so you are able to actually hear your music too.

I ordered this sub last week along with a Q-Logic 1.7512SS type 3 box and an amp wiring kit. It took me a while to run the wire for the amp because this is my first time doing something like this... any way as soon as we got everything hooked up correctly we started boomin. I have a 1500 watt amp hooked up to this bad boy and.... well it was enough to get me a ticket just a half an hour after aI hooked it up... no lie a store like 3 blocks from where I was calleed the cops on us. This woofer is definatley worth every penny, just make sure you put enough power to it or it wont sound all that great. If you are in a small car like I have, I have an 03 beetle with turbo and cold air...., get a dampening kit for your doors and if you have a hatch get some to go on there to. The thing that rattles the most is my hatch and the spare tire and tools in the truck shake super violently! any way buy this sub and you won't be disapointed, just dont get a ticket!!!

Alpine SWR-1242D

Written By Royce, Tampa, FL on Monday, August 14, 2006

I am running 3 12's in my car and I first ordered the Infinity perfects and they sounded very accurate but did not hit as hard as I thought they should so I sent them back and replaced them with these and boy is it a difference. Soon as I took them out of the box I could tell the difference, the back of these speakers is pretty impressive. I also love the ring that covers the screw holes it really gives it a nice clean look. They don't sound as accurate as the infinity's, but don't get me wrong they don't sound bad either and they hit much harder and can handle much more power. They handle the deep low frequencies much better than the infinity's. These woofers are power hungry, if you don't have the power to push them close to rms then they wont sound as good, I had to get another amp to push them close to rms and it really made a difference. I am running them at 1.34 ohms which with my mtx amp gives them about 400 watts rms and they pound really hard.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I have been an installer for 13 yrs and I must say this is the best subwoofer under $200 I have ever seen or heard! It has patented tech. and some of the coolest advancements a sub could have. Keep up the great work Alpine and I will def. keep buying these subs. By the way, I have 1 of these babies in a 2000 tahoe ls mounted in a QL1.25qf ported box hooked up to an Alpine MRP-450. I would not use this sub in a sealed box. I fully recommend this sub!!!!!!!!!!!!

Truly MIND BLOWING!

Written By Patrick, Indianapolis on Saturday, August 05, 2006

I have 2 type r 12'' in 2 seperate mtx 9500 ported enclosures powered by a 1800 watt kenwood amp and let me tell you... these bad boys are the best sub you can get for the money, i mean they're no W7 or MTX 9500 but they're incredible for $200 a piece!!! i am only 17 and my very 1st sub was a type r, a 2000 version i think, that got stolen and around easter so i got another, a 2005 version and just near the beginning or the summer i got another 2005 version. The point i'm getting to is, as long as i'm into car audio, alpine is the subwoofer of my choice.

Wow, amazing sub.

Written By VolvoMan, Staunton, VA on Sunday, July 16, 2006

I just bought this sub today and let me just say that this sub hits hard! I have this thing sitting in a Q-Logic sealed/vented box with an Alpine MRP-M650 mono amp powering it and rockford fosgate 1000W competition wiring kit connecting it all. This sub hits so hard and so deep I feel like my eyes are gonna fall out of my head. I pulled up to a friends house and he said he heard me before I even turned into his neighborhood. You can really tell that these subs are a step above all the rest. Alpine truly is the way to go.

135 db at drivers seat

Written By Paul, St. Paul, MN on Tuesday, June 13, 2006

This sub is amazing
This is my setup:
Panasonic CQ-C7303U
Profile AP1000m amplifier
2.0-farad Tsunami Capacitor
Alpine SWR-1242D
2 cube slot vent box tuned at 29
I originally had 2 12'' comp vr's I think they came in a 4 cube box @ 45 hz. And let me say they hit. I am new and all to car stereo. Crutchfield made it easy to install my deck. I took a chance and tried making a sub box. I used a formula website that gave me the vent measurments, which are 14'' x 1.25'' x 24''. I did my math to get the box exactly 2 cubes. I built this box solid as can be, it was definitly worth it. I picked a sound db measuring thing and on my way home i was hitting an easy 125db with "get low" by lil jon. When I got home I put a bass tester cd in. The sound reader stops at 126 db, and it kept getting louder. This sub is great and I recomend it to anyone that wants some serious power. But I would say get something bigger than the AP1000m. You will want 600 good watts of RMS power. And also, dont get sealed. This sub hits lows so impeckable.

Alpine Type-R 12", Alpine MRP-650, Alpine CDE-9845 in Honda Element

Written By Peter, Ft. Lauderdale, Florida on Thursday, June 08, 2006
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I recently upgraded my 2003 Honda Element with a little bit of boom and I must say that I am very happy with Alpine. After many talks with my good friend Alan and reading a bunch online, I picked out the best equipment for the money and space that I am willing to give up.

I have one Apline Type-R 12" with Dual Voice Coils (SWR-1242D) that I mounted in the Q-Logic 1.25 cubic inch ported box (QLH-1.2512SS). Alpine recommends anywhere from 1-2.0cubic inches in a ported setup, but i read somewhere that 1.7 cubic inches is optimal. I picked the 1.25 box due to its compact size in the back of my Element. I surf a lot and watened to make sure that I had enough room to fold back one rear seat to accomidate my surfboards/friends.

I matched the sub with the Apline MRP-650 V-Power Amp. I have both voice coils wired for 600W @ 2 ohms. I mounted the amp upsidedown on the back of the box. Bought the recommened streetwires amp kit and ran the power down the drivers side, RCAs down the passenger side. Looks very clean thanks to Alan.

I changed out my stock head unit with the Apline CDE-9845. I felt that it was the best deal for the money. I also bought a Aux cable and drilled out a hole in the underside of the storage bin located under the gear shift and ran the Aux for iPod/DVD/Laptop hookup. When not in use it stores toally away and appers to be stock.

When the bass hits i can not make out whats in my rearview. This combination gives me plenat of bass and more importain... clear bass. I have tuned the sub so that my headunit output is only 11 out of 15 and everything sounds super clear and loud/booming at 22 on the head unit (out of 45.) Enjoy!

Massive Inner Ear Damage!!!!!!!!

Written By David, Chattanooga, TN on Tuesday, May 23, 2006

First of all let me start by saying, these subs BUMP. I have an eclipse head unit and polk speakers. I am feeding an alpine mono amp (400 watts RMS at 2ohms) to a single 12" type R. I have to keep the bass EQ turned almost all the way down or I cannot hear my door speakers at all. Incredible detail, has not distorted once, even at high volumes. I recommend the dynamat license plate kit, my license plate is rattling.

Almost Unbelievable

Written By Tommy, Ca$hville, Tenn on Tuesday, April 18, 2006

Almost unbelievable bass. I purchased a(1) 12" Type R for my 90 'Lac' Eldorado. I have a Kenwood KAC-9152D amp powering the sub at 2 ohms. This amp is also a great buy, but the amp has enough power to push 2 12" Type R's so I want another although I do not really need it. 1 12" Type R pounds more than enough for the daily driver. They will hear/feel you coming.

This is a very hard hitting sub with correct power. I have only 1- 12" powered by 500watts RMS running 2 ohm.

This thing almost pops the moon roof out!!

I called alpine direct and got the exact measurements for a ported box tuned at 30hz. Be carful with port size and length as mine required a 4" port X 18" long!

Beautiful Hard Hitting Bass

Written By Ben, New York City on Wednesday, March 22, 2006

My god, adding this bass to my system was the best thing I could have done. I have infinity kappa 6x9's in the rear deck, infinity reference speakers in the front side kick panels, and two centrally located infinity kappa 4 inch 42.7i's also in the front. The bass just rounds off the system. By the way, its common to put your bass in a sealed or ported box, but everyone should do it with their speakers too, it drastically increases the bass and midrange output of the speakers, which is where all the "punch" comes when you listen to your bass.

Alpine SWR-1242D

Written By Fatty, Truman, MN on Sunday, March 12, 2006

i own 2 Alpine SWR-1242D's. i bought my first Alpine Type-R after i blew an alpine tpye E 12. the type E sounded ok so i figured that a type R would sound way better... And it exeeded my expectations for the sub considering i got called in for a sound ordance violation the same day i insalled it. After that i stated to think about how much better 2 would be so i bought a second SWR-1242D. my only problem is not my subs its my rockford pounch p3001 mono amp doesnt push enough power for two of these subs to proform at thier peak. With that i sugest anyone looking into getting some of these subs, do so bucause with out them your missin out on some hard hitting BASS!!!

Written By Erol, JACKSONVILLE, FL on Thursday, February 16, 2006

I JUST RECIEVED MY ALPINE SUB IN THE MAIL TODAY AND TOOK IT STRAIGHT TO THE SHOP TO GET IT INSTALLED, THEY HOOKED UP A 600RMS AMP AND A SINGLE SEALED 12 BOX FOR THE SUB.....AFTER I PULLED OUT AND KRANKED MY NEW SYSTEM I WAS LIKE, I THOUGHT THE REVIEWS WAS SAYING THAT IT HIT PRETTY HARD, THE SUB WAS HITTING REALLY CLEAN BUT IT WASNT THAT HARD, I WAS LIKE OH WELL, I GUESS THATS WHAT THEY MEANT ABOUT THE CLARITY.......AFTER I GOT HOME, I DECIDED TO JUST TAKE THE SUB OUT OF THE BOX AND MAKE SURE EVERYTHING WAS WIRED RIGHT, AFTER OPENING IT , I REALIZED THAT THE GUY FROM THE AUDIO PLACE WIRED IT 4 OHM INSTEAD OF 2 OHM...I JUST WANNA SAY, I DONT KNOW ANYTHING ABOUT WIRING SUBS BUT ALPINE MADE IT EASY TO WIRE THE THING, EVEN I DID IT :) ...ANYWAY, I PUT IT BACK IN THE BOX AND BACK IN MY TRUNK...WHEN I TURNED ON THE CAR, THE FREAKIN THING WAS SLAMMIN, I HAD TO DRIVE OUT OF MY NEIGHBORHOOD SO I COULD FULLY TEST IT, I WAS LIKE HECK YEAH, THATS WHAT IM TALKING ABOUT..THIS THING DOES HIT PRETTY HARD AND WAS STILL PRODUCING A VERY CLEAN SOUND......WITH THE REST OF THE SPACE I HAVE, I WILL RATE EACH SUB BRAND TO MAKE IT EASY FOR SOMEONE THAT IS A BEGINNER SINCE IVE TRIED EVERYTHING OUT THERE :)

IM RATING EACH 1 - 5 (5 BEING THE BEST)
*AUDIOBAHN:(BASS=4,CLARITY=4)
*ALPINE:(BASS=4,CLARITY=5)
*INFINITY:(BASS=3,CLARITY=5)
*KICKER:(BASS=5,CLARITY=3)
*MTX:(BASS=3,CLARITY=3)
*FOSGATE:(BASS=5,CLARITY=4)
*SONY:(BASS=2,CLARITY=3)

Alpine... does it AGAIN!

Written By Charley, Chicago, Illinois on Monday, January 30, 2006

What do I have installed?
Alpine CDA-9855, TME-770 monitor, PXA-701 sound processor, 2 6 1/2's Type-R and 2 6x9's Type-R, 2 MRD-M605 Mono amps, KCE-511M amplifier link, KCA-420i iPod interface adapter, and 2 12" 4-ohm DVC Type-R's. A true Alpine experience.

These subs are AWESOME. I've been an Alpine fan for a very long time and I have to say that they their lineup improves year after year. Not to get off subject here, but why do people think that 1500 watts max is what the speaker is capable of putting out continuously? If you were smart and know a thing or two about sounds, 1500 watts is only the peak or burst of music. You should really pay attention to the RMS because that's what REALLY matters. So, do your homework to those who try to criticise about something they really have no knowledge of. Anyways, I have 2 of these in a sealed box and I have 2 Alpine MRD-M605's running to each sub. Total RMS for the sub is 500 watts RMS and my amp provides approximately 437 RMS. Close enough for these to really POUND. These are definitely worth your money. They are much improved from last year's Type-R's and I can't wait to see what Alpine has in store for 2006.

Wow! What a great product ....

Written By Bease, Ventura, Ca on Saturday, January 21, 2006

I just installed this sub tonight in a 94' Civic (1.75ft ported box). I have it hooked up to an inferior amp right now (I can't possibly be running more than 200-250 watts at 4 ohm). I'm telling you, THIS SUB IS A BEAST ! I bought a M605 Alpine Mono Amp (600watts)and i don't know if i should even install it for fear of my trunk falling off! At first i was interested in the Infinity 12.1d because i'm interested in sound quality over bang, but after testing both of them out the 12.1d gave a lot of muddy distortion. Whereas this sub puts out the ground pounding bass that really attracts you to Bass in the first place. I just couldn't ignore all the positive reviews that this sub had been getting so i took it for a test drive. I was sold almost as soon as i tested it ...This beast is too hard to ignore! I was actually initially interested in the type S because i thought the Type R would be too much Bass for me, but i really just loved the look of the Kevlar on the type R. This thing looks great and sounds even better! This sub produces the kind of Bass that you will be able to feel in your chest! I would recommend this subwoofer for ANYONE ! Great Product, i'm very pleased.

CAUTION LOUD

Written By Andrew, Tallahassee, FL on Wednesday, January 18, 2006
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Wow, this is one of the loudist 12's I have heard especially in this price range. I have one stuffed in a 1.75 Q-Logic vented box hooked up to a Alpine MRD-501 Mono amp running about 600 rms at 2 ohm's. The box is behind the passenger seat in a 1993 Ford Ranger. Having it in a truck I think makes it sound louder because it has no trunk to travel thru. I have hade it for about 5 months and have started loseing hearing in my left ear. The only thing I would have to complane about this sub is that it "apparintly" can handle 1500 watts max. Thats a lie. I can make it distorte easley with my amp. I say not much more than 600 watts and it starts to distorte and clip. Also if your wanting a lot of low notes don't get this sub. Go for the 15 inch Type R. Other than that this sub is great in SQ and SPL WITHIN the RMS range. I hope this review may have helped you in any way.

WOW. these things pound harder than anything in my whole town. I have 2 Alpine SWR-1242D's in a QLogic type 3 box with 2 Alpine MRD-M1005 amps(one to each sub) these will blow your mind away. i have about 2000 watts all together and my car is falling apart. they beat all of my friends subs but if you want show-room bass get the Alpine Type-X SWX-1242D and bullet proof windows. those are a little crazy for a normal car, but the type r's are perfect they can give you a little bass for when your mom or dad has to use your car but more than you know what to do with for me. they shake cars all the way across the parking lot from me. Definetly buy these!
