Alpine

Our take on the Alpine SWR-1243D

Alpine Authorized Online Dealer

Bass production is all about moving air and Alpine's Type-R subs do that better than ever. Advanced suspension features give these heavies the extra-long cone excursion needed to push large amounts of air, while the two-piece parabolic Kevlar® treated pulp woofer cone and multi-roll Santoprene™ rubber surround promote accurate response. Best of all, these subs feature shallower mounting depths than previous Type-R subs, so you can fit them into more spaces in your vehicle.

The SWR-1243D 12" subwoofer handles up to 600 watts RMS for big-time output, and its dual oversized 4-ohm voice coils offer system wiring flexibility. It works well in sealed and ported enclosures so you can choose what kind of bass you want to hear and feel. The one-piece aluminum frame houses a double-stacked ferrite magnet structure for increased accuracy and power handling, along with a finned, radial heatsink that shunts off excess heat for long-lasting reliability with reduced distortion.

Note: If you are wiring this DVC sub for lower impedance, make sure that your amp is compatible.

Highlights:

  • 12" subwoofer with dual 4-ohm voice coils
  • Kevlar reinforced pulp cone with Santoprene rubber surround
  • cast aluminum frame with perimeter venting and radial finned heat sink

Features
Enclosure Compatibility

Features

Alpine Type-R Subwoofer: These redesigned, fourth-generation Alpine type-R subwoofers include several enhanced features to achieve even cleaner, deeper bass extension, faster, more accurate transients and even greater output capability than before.

Kevlar Reinforced Pulp Cone: This Alpine Type-R subwoofer has a two-piece structural parabolic Kevlar reinforced pulp cone. Kevlar adds strength and tear resistance to the woofer cone while maintaining the benefits of a pulp cone design. There is also an oversized inverted dust cap of the same material, which increases rigidity and virtually eliminates distortion at extreme volume levels.

HAMRS: The woofer features a High Amplitude Multi Roll Surround (HAMRS), made of injection molded Santoprene, that allows for an incredible amount of linear excursion and greater SPL. The High-Amplitude Multi Roll Surround Design allows for extreme excursions without sacrificing valuable cone area. FEA Optimized for linearity and made with injection-molded Santoprene, the HAMR surround is a key part of the suspension system that allows for extreme excursions with accurate, distortion-free control

FEA Optimized Spider with Reinforced Layer Spider Integration: An FEA optimized Nomex progressive spider with reinforced layer spider integration ensures reliable and consistent control of the tinsel-leads to eliminate any possible mechanical noises or interference typical of many high-excursion designs.

Radial Vented VC Heatsink and Airflow Management System: Alpine's Patented Radial Vented VC Heatsink and Airflow Management System actively manages voice coil temperatures by forcing air directly across the heatsink system. This helps to minimize power compression and ensures reliable long playing time by actively eliminating output-robbing heat away from the voice coil. The new one-piece cast aluminum frame with integrated shorting sleeve uses the entire frame as a heatsink, to allow for sustained power output and handling, even in the most extreme of applications.

FEA Optimized Segmented Machined CRC Motor Structure: The new Type-R subwoofer has over 20% more motor force than its predecessor delivering more accurate, louder and cleaner bass with even more control, thanks to its new ten-piece, segmented, double stacked magnet structure. The optimized machined CRC motor structure also creates a symmetrical magnetic field while optimizing flux density to greatly reduce distortion, while further improving power handling and output.

Compound Radius Curve Pole Geometry: Alpine's Patented Compound Radius Curve pole geometry ensure for an ultra symmetrical magnetic field, while optimizing flux density to greatly reduce distortion, while further improving power handling and output.

Oversized Voice Coil: The oversized (65mm), high-temperature (180°C), 4-layer dual voice coil offers more than 35% more surface area, allowing for increased power handling to 600W RMS / 1800W Peak.

Dual Voice Coils: For increased system flexibility, the woofer has two 4-ohm voice coils. When the voice coils are wired in parallel, the woofer presents a 2-ohm load. When the voice coils are wired in series, the woofer presents an 8-ohm load. If each coil is connected to a different amplifier channel, each channel will see a 4-ohm load.

Push Terminals: The push terminals are all located on one side of the woofer. The terminals will accept bare wire up to 8 gauge, pin connectors, or banana plugs.

Jumpers: Included with the woofer are two voice coil terminal jumpers. These jumpers allow you to easily wire the voice coils in parallel (for a 2-ohm load) or series (for an 8-ohm load).

Enclosure Compatibility

Sealed and Vented Enclosure Compatible: The Alpine Type-R Subs have been completely redesigned to offer more installation flexibility and application versatility (in either a sealed over vented enclosure) to build the ideal sound system in your vehicle. These new designs offer a near 20% reduction in mounting depth, while offering even greater output capability.

Recommended Sealed Box Volume: The recommended sealed box sizes range from 0.65 cu/ft to 1.25 cu/ft. Within this range, the ideal size is 1.0 cu/ft.

Recommended Vented Box Volume: The recommended vented box sizes range from 1.0 cu/ft to 2.0 cu/ft. Within this range, the ideal size is 1.5 cu/ft. A slot port with the following dimensions should be used: 12" (W) x 1.25" (H) x 22" (L).

Alpine Type R 12" VS Pioneer 10"

Written By Justin F, Charleston, SC on Friday, December 17, 2010

Wow, let me start off buy saying this, this is an amazing subwoofer! I was running a 10" Pioneer Subwoofer in a Truck Subwoofer Box. Talk about a major difference!!!! I run a Blaupunkt PCA-1350, which is an amplifier that Crutchfield use to sell but discontinued. It runs 500 watts RMS at 2 Ohms and 300 watts RMS at 4 ohms with 8 Gauge Power Wire which isn't much at all. I personally wired the Alpine Type R 12" to 2 Ohms. The box I am running with this subwoofer is a L-Vent Ported subwoofer box that I picked up. This is a really loud setup. Alpine definately makes good quality subwoofers and make them to with stand tons of power! This subwoofer makes my rear view mirror pointless and makes my roof flex. This is a setup to get! I hope to upgrade to two Alpine Type R 12" subwoofers and a bigger amplifier. Definately the subwoofer to buy if you want a good quality product, good quality sound, and a loud subwoofer!

My current setup.
I drive a 1997 Mercury Mountaineer.

Excellent sub, excellent value

Very happy with this sub. listened to several other brand name subs at the local auto sound shop. Value was solid. There are slightly better subs but you will pay twice as much.

Recommend that you carefully select the correct box to this sub. This sub sounds very different with a sealed vs ported/vented box. Your music tastes will drive this decision, but make sure you get a box tuned to the proper frequency recommended by Alpine and you select the proper air space inside the box. Don't forget to take the porting area into account! Alpine has those specification on their website

This sub was mated with Alpine's 500w sub amplifier which as you would expect match well with its capabilities.

We also used the Alpine brand sub grill which I would highly recommend to keep the sub safe wherever you install the box. Our local installer let us know that he installs this combo frequently and says it is in the top 95% of systems for the money spent

This was installed in a 2002 4Runner Limited with the premium sound system. Note the LOC was used and we sent the data and power wires on different sides of the car to the amp.

Again, very please with the price and performance. Thanks Crutchfield!

Written By Jesse, San Diego, Ca on Wednesday, March 23, 2011

I have two of these in my SRT-8 hooked up at 2ohms in a ported box with a alpine 1000watt rms amp, let me tell you that these are amazing. My trunk can prove it. Best subs by far. Well worth the price. I recommend these subs to someone who is fasinated by clean, loud bass, or if your a bass-head just like me. Caution!!! Will disturb the peace! A+ /////Alpine.

Thanks,

A Must Have!

Written By Jay, Michigan on Monday, November 22, 2010

This sub is worth the money.
I just got this sub in my Lexus IS. My setup is a single 12 with a large vented box, powered by a Kenwood amp. About 500w RMS. A this thing absolutely knocks. In my opinion, there is no need to look further. The best sub on the market. Surpassed my expectations. If you want deep, clear, pounding, solid bass, get this sub!
It will not let you down.

Bill

Written By William, Charlotte NC on Thursday, April 22, 2010

Great sub! I have 1 of these hooked up to a JL Audio 500 v1 amp and it hammers. This 1 sub hits better than 2 kicker cvr's and 2 JL amps.

Put this into BMW 325, with all alpine components and this whole set-up is excellent.

Buy this sub but you'll need some good speakers inside if you want to hear anything besides teh bass from this monster.

Heavyweight subs that will handle the power

Crutchfield Customer Review

The reviewer purchased this item from us, verified by the email address on the order.

I decided to buy 2 of these Type R's to go in the back of the Camaro. Each 12" is being driven with one JL Audio 500/1v2 amp (separate 4 gauge wires). It flat out hounds... I had to take the box out and screw in some braces because they rattle everything in the car, and makes the windshield wiper blades visibly move off the glass! I decided on the JL amp/ Alpine sub combination rather the the opposite because the Type R's are more capable subs power-wise, and they weigh nearly twice as much as the w3's (and still offer comparable sound quality as well). JL Audio's strongpoint is their Slash series amplifiers which are high quality, well designed beasts that seem to dissipate heat better than the compact Alpine amps, and dish out huge power over years of hard use. Couple an Alpine sub with a JL amp and you have optimized the best qualities of both companies. Click the "add to cart" button, order safely from Crutchfield, and be happily satisfied when you unbox your new products with solid warranties that you won't get from other "dealers" on the internet.

Written By Gary, guilford, ME on Sunday, November 07, 2010

My experience with this subwoofer has been amazing, if your looking for a sub thats going to turn peoples heads this is the one to buy. iv'e had it going on a year now and have put it through some serious POUNDINGS, and it still has the same crisp and clean hard hitting sounding bass as it did the day i bought it. Its worth every penny if audio is what your into.

BIG Bang

Written By Bizzle, New orleans, LA on Friday, March 16, 2012

This subwooofer is the bigest bang for your buck. I have it in a custom vented enclosure about 3.0 cu the manual says 2.0 cu but biger the better when it comes to bass. I'm running it on a kicker ZX 750.1 and it pounds like a champ. I think these subs are under rated a lot i had a kicker DX500.1 and it was calling for more power.
Pros:
say away from jl audio subwoofers
Cons:
none

bass so loud it tickles you

Written By Frank, Washington on Wednesday, January 04, 2012

Had a pair of 10's in a ported box for 8 years in a pickup....... yes a pickup. 800w rms. Would tickle your nose and ears to the point that I would see my passenger scratching at there face. now I have a 99 mercury grand marquis and I just upgraded that system. And I have a 1300 watts RMS at 4 ohm amp going to two 12's also a ported box. all I have to say is ouch! I went to a car stereo shop and they tried selling me all kinds of subs and amps. I went with what I wanted not what they were trying to sell me. Anyways long story short I brought my car in after I was done and there jaws literally hit the floor. saw a guy saying you can hear him 2 blocks away with 1200watts rms. well he isn't kidding. full volume is dangerous because I cant see out of my mirrors they vibrate so bad :)
Pros:
had before blew them up after 8 years loved the sound new design less depth more power round 2 here we go
Cons:
people tell me to turn it down quite often
