Our take on the Alpine SWS-1042D

Alpine Authorized Online Dealer

Get a rush of clean, loud bass from a Type-S subwoofer, and you'll understand why so many car enthusiasts bask in Alpine sound. Housed in a heavy-gauge stamped steel frame, the SWS-1042D 10" sub brings out those forceful lows that your existing system can't produce.

Type-S subs use a Kevlar®-reinforced woofer cone for quick response and long-term dependability. The brushed aluminum finish on the cone matches the look of other Type-S speakers. A 3/4" Santoprene rubber surround promotes maximum cone travel, while an extended spider landing area provides extra excursion for full bass.

You'll enjoy distortion-free sound, thanks to a perimeter venting system that forces hot air away from the voice coil. The tinsel leads are built directly into the tear-resistant, dual progressive Nomex spiders for reliable service. The dual 4-ohm design lets you wire for high output or a multiple woofer setup.

The SWS-1042D is designed for use in sealed or vented enclosures.

Note: If you are wiring this DVC sub for lower impedance, make sure that your amp is compatible. Most car amplifiers are stable down to 2 ohms in standard mode, or 4 ohms in bridged operation.

Features

Kevlar Reinforced Pulp Cone: This Alpine Type-S subwoofer has a Kevlar reinforced pulp cone. Kevlar adds strength and tear resistance to the woofer cone while maintaining the benefits of a pulp cone design. There is also an oversized aluminum coated polypropylene inverted parabolic dust cap, which increases rigidity and virtually eliminates distortion at extreme volume levels.

Santoprene Rubber Surround: The high-excursion 3/4" Santoprene rubber surround is durable and resistant to the elements, resulting in a very reliable performance. The surround is specially designed to resist deformation that is common in most woofers with wide surrounds. This design gives the surround more control over the woofer cone to reduce distortion and possible driver failure.

Screw Cover Gasket: The woofer includes a rubber gasket to cover the screw holes. When mounted, the gasket adds approximately 3/16" to the flange height and approximately 1/8" to the mounting height of the woofer.

Dual 4-ohm Voice Coils: The SWS-1042D features dual 4-layer voice coils that utilize 180°C high-temperature wire and a high-strength brass former. Dual voice coil woofers offer flexibility in wiring. When the voice coils are wired in parallel with each other, the woofer presents a 2-ohm mono load. When the voice coils are wired in series with each other, the woofer presents an 8-ohm mono load. In addition, each coil may be connected to a different amplifier channel and each channel will see a 4-ohm load.

Spring Posts: The woofer has two pairs of spring posts that will accept pin connectors, banana plugs, and up to 8 gauge bare wire. All four speaker terminals are located on one side of the woofer to make it easier to connect the woofer in a parallel or series configuration.

Wire Jumpers: The woofer is equipped with two 5-5/8" speaker wire jumpers with banana plugs on both ends. These jumpers allow you to wire the voice coils in parallel (for a 2-ohm load) or series (for an 8-ohm load).

Mirrored Progressive Nomex Spiders: This subwoofer has mirrored progressive Nomex spiders for added stability and mechanical durability. The custom progressive rolls gives the woofer a longer, more linear stroke with maximum centering and restoring force. Special edge control design and Nomex construction provide excellent tear resistance, strength and long-term reliability. The tinsel speaker leads are integrated into the top spider.

Heavy Gauge Steel Basket: The frame is custom stamped from heavy gauge steel for maximum strength.

Leg Vent System: The frame features an Integrated Leg Vent System to help cool the motor structure. Two vertical slits are cut into each of the six "legs" of the basket below the spider to allow cool air to flow in and heated air to flow out.

Heat Transfer Plate: This subwoofer contains a heat transfer plate that is thermally coupled to the voice coil. This plate pulls heat away from the voice coil, achieving up to 10% additional power handling, and better reliability.

Bumped Back Plate and Extended Vented Pole Piece: This woofer combines a bumped back plate and an extended pole piece, giving it a nearly 1-3/4" peak-to-peak cone excursion. This extra long cone movement provides a higher bass output. The vents and dual flared design of the pole piece maximize airflow around the voice coil, giving it a more reliable performance.

Enclosure Compatibility

Recommended Sealed Box Volume: The sealed box sizes recommended by Alpine range from 0.65 cu/ft to 1.5 cu/ft. Within this range, the ideal size recommended by Alpine is 1.0 cu/ft, so this is the enclosure recommended by Crutchfield.

Recommended Vented Box Volume: The vented box sizes recommended by Alpine range from 1.0 cu/ft to 1.75 cu/ft. Within this range, the ideal size recommended by Alpine is 1.2 cu/ft, so this is the enclosure recommended by Crutchfield. One 3" diameter x 9" long port should be used with the 1.2 cu/ft enclosure.

Alpine SWS-1042D

Written By timothys18, Rochester, NY on Monday, March 20, 2006

These subs pound!! I have had them in my car for over a year now and they just keep on hitting. Any one who says that these subs aren't worth what you pay is crazy. Hook them up with a good amp (I'm using a Kenwood KAC-7201 putting out about 115watts per voice coil) and you'll rattle the trunk off!!

Great bass. These subwoofers give the bass you want. It's clean and refined. It booms very loud. Great subwoofer for the price. I run a 500 watt amp each to my two alpine subwoofers.

I have a Single 10" sub and it hits pretty good off of a 400x1 RMS amp. Nice sound and great quality. I went through 2 of the POLks in a month and these have lasted beyond a year and still hitting strong.

Kickin Comp Subs

Written By redduck06, Mankato, MN on Wednesday, March 23, 2005

I purchased two for these subs about 2 years ago. They are by far the best sounding, hardest hitting, and loudest subwoofers I ever had. They can hit the deep notes and just pound. So much so your rearview mirror will shake. If you are in to rock, rap, or country these subs are for you. Be sure to get a amp that can produce at least 600 watts or more.

The type of bass you get from your component subwoofer doesn't depend on the woofer alone. You'll need a strong, tightly constructed enclosure for optimum subwoofer performance.
