Bring on the bass

Alpine Authorized Online Dealer

You can tell that Alpine's bass pedigree runs deep in their latest line of Type-S subwoofers. Using technology found in their higher end subs, this sub will rock your system and add depth to your favorite tracks. You'll love the detail it brings to a bass guitar and the impact you'll feel when a kick drum hits. Throw a couple of these in your ride and prepare to be amazed by unrelenting bass.

Advanced materials

The SWS-10D4 can handle up to 500 watts of RMS power, so you can drive it hard and it'll keep up. The tough 10" Kevlar® treated cone stays rigid under pressure, while its rubber HAMRS surround allows for maximum excursion. Its dual 4-ohm voice coils allow for wiring flexibility which helps if you plan on adding another subwoofer down the line. Also, it rocks in both sealed and ported boxes, so you can choose an enclosure that suits your tastes.

Note: If you are wiring this DVC sub for lower impedance, make sure that your amp is compatible.

To drive this single subwoofer, we recommend a mono amplifier rated between 375 and 750 watts RMS at 2 ohms. For more information, please refer to our article on How to Match Subwoofers and Amplifiers.

Product Highlights:

  • 10" subwoofer with dual 4-ohm voice coils
  • Kevlar reinforced pulp cone with HAMRS Santoprene rubber surround
  • frequency response: 28-200 Hz
  • power handling: 150-500 watts RMS (250 watts per coil)
  • peak power: 1,500 watts
  • sensitivity: 85.5 dB
  • top-mount depth: 5-9/16"
  • sealed box volume: 0.54-0.89 cu. ft.
  • ported box volume: 0.79-1.34 cu. ft.

What's a component sub and why would I want one?

A component sub is simply a speaker that's designed to reproduce bass once it's installed in a compatible enclosure. Think about the impact of a movie soundtrack in a big theater or even in your own home HDTV setup. A component sub can add the same kind of power to the music in your car. And a car sub is not all about the boom that you hear on a street corner (although that's cool too) - you can pair a component sub with your choice of enclosure to get bass just the way you like it, from tight and punchy to fat and loose. And once you experience music in your car with a well-tuned subwoofer, you'll never go back.

Features

Kevlar Reinforced Pulp Cone: This Alpine Type-S subwoofer uses a parabolic cone structure, with a Kevlar reinforced pulp cone and a Poly-Mica dust cap. Kevlar adds strength and tear resistance to the woofer cone while maintaining the benefits of a pulp cone design. The oversized, inverted poly-mica dust cap increases rigidity and virtually eliminates cone distortion at extreme volume levels.

HAMRS: The woofer features a High Amplitude Multi Roll Surround (HAMRS), made of Santoprene, that allows a large linear excursion and greater SPL. The HAMRS design allows extreme excursions without sacrificing valuable cone area.

Progressive Spider: The progressive Conex spider has reinforced layer tinsel leads to ensure reliable and consistent control of the tinsel leads and eliminate any mechanical noise or interference often seen in high excursion cone designs.

Compound Radius Curve Pole Geometry: Alpine's Patented Compound Radius Curve pole geometry ensures a symmetrical magnetic field, while optimizing flux density to reduce distortion and further improve power handling and output.

Oversized Voice Coil: The oversized (65mm), high-temperature, 6-layer dual voice coils offer power handling up to 500W RMS / 1500W Peak (250 watts RMS per coil).

Dual Voice Coils: For system flexibility, the woofer has two 4-ohm voice coils. When the voice coils are wired in parallel, the woofer presents a 2-ohm load. When the voice coils are wired in series, the woofer presents an 8-ohm load.

Spring Terminals: The spring post terminals are all located on one side of the woofer. The terminals will accept pin connectors, single banana plugs, or bare wire up to 8 gauge.

Jumpers: Included with the woofer are two voice coil terminal jumpers. These jumpers allow you to easily wire the voice coils in parallel (for a 2-ohm load) or series (for an 8-ohm load).

Enclosure Compatibility

Sealed Box: Alpine recommends a sealed enclosure with an internal volume between 0.54 and 0.89 cubic feet, with an ideal volume of 0.54 cubic feet. Sealed enclosures provide the most control over a woofer, will handle a lot of power, and provide accurate sonic reproduction, making them suitable to all types of music.

Ported Box Volume: The recommended ported box volume ranges from 0.79 cubic feet to 1.34 cubic feet, with the ideal size being 1.04 cubic feet, using a slot port measuring 10" (W) x 1" (H) x 18" (L).

This speaker sounds awesome and when I connected it to the Alpine mono amp it really blew my ear drums out. No really my ears hurt. This puppy can move some air. I listened to a Police album, Beastie boys, and my local alternative radio. Very nice

Pros: all good

It had taken me months to plan out the type of system in my 2004 Kia Optima. I went through countless articles and write ups on sealed vs ported, 10 inch vs 12 inch and even building my own box. I wanted a sub that would compliment my music of choice (Hip Hop and bass-centric electronic music) and took up a smaller footprint in my trunk.

I had previously owned an L5 Solo-baric Kicker sub and I had always made comparisons with this sub with a sealed enclosure. I had been partial through this whole time and initially felt the Alpine wouldn't satisfy my needs. Their previous subs from the Xplod line looked tacky and of a lower quality build. I ultimately decided to go with a single 10 inch Alpine type S in a ported box with an MTX Thunder 500.1 mono amp.

This combination is just one word. LOUD.

I am thoroughly impressed with the clarity and the overall "boomy-ness" of the system. I have had this cranked nearly all the way up and the distortion is minimal with my amp setup. This sub can hit some low notes HARD. I believe this comes from the box amp/setup instead of brand choice. This is my first sub install I have completed myself and I feel I need to tune the settings a little more to my liking.

I am completely satisfied with my choice and would look to Alpine and Crutchfield again!

Pros: - Small Design - Can handle large amounts of power - The build of the sub feels of higher quality

Cons: None

Man this sub blew my mind. After having a 12" type r, I wanted something a little bit quiter. The type r would completely move my rear view mirror. I expected this sub to hit softer and soud better, but this thing hits hard! The sound quality is also amazing. Connected to my alpine 500 watt amp people would ask me what I had and they would be amazed it wasn't a 12. This sub is very durable, as are all products made by alpine.

Pros: Hard hitting, very clean sound

Great product. This sub really suprised me with how well it sounds for the price. I have it set up with a 500 watt alpine amp and this system sounds much more clear and hits almost as hard as my friend's system with 2 12" kicker subs. I couldn't be happier with this purchase and Crutchfield is the only place I go to for electronics.

I was a little worried that in buying a cheaper subwoofer than I wanted, I was going to be regretting it after the install. Boy was I wrong. I am using a JVC Arsenal head unit with good preamp outputs and a monoblock amp by MB Quart, and this rattles the crap out of my small 2005 Focus. I will need plenty of Dynamat in the future. Made a super easy sealed enclosure with a friend and this subwoofer is super clean. Would recommend if you are on a budget but still want great equipment. The only thing I noticed right away is that it couldn't hit the really low basslines (but that is to be expected since it is only a ten inch).

Pros: Cheap, Sounds great, Looks nice, Solid construction

Cons: Couldn't hit the really low notes

WOW!!!

Paid more than my RF Prime (twice as much) bug it is more than worth it. This sub is amazing. Built solid and hits hard as well as being able to hit the lower notes (down to 28hz). I have it hooked to a Kenwood mono block amp with 350w rms and 1000w peak. Perfect set-up. Great sub
