Our take on the Alpine SWS-12D4

by John Pollard
Alpine

What's a component sub and why would I want one?

A component sub is simply a speaker that's designed to reproduce bass once it's installed in a compatible enclosure. Think about the impact of a movie soundtrack in a big theater or even in your own home HDTV setup. A component sub can add the same kind of power to the music in your car. And a car sub is not all about the boom that you hear on a street corner (although that's cool too) - you can pair a component sub with your choice of enclosure to get bass just the way you like it, from tight and punchy to fat and loose. And once you experience music in your car with a well-tuned subwoofer, you'll never go back.

Bring on the bass

Alpine Authorized Online Dealer

You can tell that Alpine's bass pedigree runs deep in their latest line of Type-S subwoofers. Using technology found in their higher end subs, this sub will rock your system and add depth to your favorite tracks. You'll love the detail it brings to a bass guitar and the impact you'll feel when a kick drum hits. Throw a couple of these in your ride and prepare to be amazed by unrelenting bass.

Advanced materials

The SWS-12D4 can handle up to 500 watts of RMS power, so you can drive it hard and it'll keep up. The tough 12" Kevlar® treated cone stays rigid under pressure, while its rubber HAMRS surround allows for maximum excursion. Its dual 4-ohm voice coils allow for wiring flexibility which helps if you plan on adding another subwoofer down the line. Also, it rocks in both sealed and ported boxes, so you can choose an enclosure that suits your tastes.

Note: If you are wiring this DVC sub for lower impedance, make sure that your amp is compatible.

Highlights:

  • 12" subwoofer with dual 4-ohm voice coils

Features

Kevlar Reinforced Pulp Cone: This Alpine Type-S subwoofer uses a parabolic cone structure, with a Kevlar reinforced pulp cone and a Poly-Mica dust cap. Kevlar adds strength and tear resistance to the woofer cone while maintaining the benefits of a pulp cone design. The oversized, inverted poly-mica dust cap increases rigidity and virtually eliminates cone distortion at extreme volume levels.

HAMRS: The woofer features a High Amplitude Multi Roll Surround (HAMRS), made of Santoprene, that allows a large linear excursion and greater SPL. The HAMRS design allows extreme excursions without sacrificing valuable cone area.

Progressive Spider: The progressive Conex spider has reinforced layer tinsel leads to ensure reliable and consistent control of the tinsel leads and eliminate any mechanical noise or interference often seen in high excursion cone designs.

Compound Radius Curve Pole Geometry: Alpine's Patented Compound Radius Curve pole geometry ensures a symmetrical magnetic field, while optimizing flux density to reduce distortion and further improve power handling and output.

Oversized Voice Coil: The oversized (65mm), high-temperature, 5-layer dual voice coils offer power handling up to 500W RMS / 1500W Peak (250 watts RMS per coil).

Dual Voice Coils: For system flexibility, the woofer has two 4-ohm voice coils. When the voice coils are wired in parallel, the woofer presents a 2-ohm load. When the voice coils are wired in series, the woofer presents an 8-ohm load.

Spring Terminals: The spring post terminals are all located on one side of the woofer. The terminals will accept pin connectors, single banana plugs, or bare wire up to 8 gauge.

Jumpers: Included with the woofer are two voice coil terminal jumpers. These jumpers allow you to easily wire the voice coils in parallel (for a 2-ohm load) or series (for an 8-ohm load).

Enclosure Compatibility

Sealed Box: Alpine recommends a sealed enclosure with an internal volume between 0.71 and 1.06 cubic feet, with an ideal volume of 0.9 cubic feet. Sealed enclosures provide the most control over a woofer, will handle a lot of power, and provide accurate sonic reproduction, making them suitable to all types of music.

Ported Box Volume: The recommended ported box volume ranges from 1.06 to 1.56 cubic feet, with the ideal size being 1.46 cubic feet, using a slot port measuring 12.5" (W) x 1" (H) x 18" (L).

Alpine Type S 12' Sub

Written By Evan, Kennesaw GA on Friday, April 04, 2014

I love this sub. Even though, yes it is my first sub and yes, I am probably fanboying over it, It hits really hard. i have it paired with alpines MRV-500 amp and have the gain set to 2/3 and bass boost set to 9db. I have a convertible mustang so I had to make a fiberglass enclosure- roughly .85 cubes- and it sounds great. hits the lows and is very loud. My only complaint is that there a slight ruffly sound it makes when it hits the extremities- higher or lower notes, but only I notice it- none of my passengers do. And yes, i have shocked them when i reveal that it is only one sub. Anyways, i recommend it.
Pros:
Loud, accurate, great bang for buck.
Cons:
Slight ruffling when it hits the higher or lower notes (almost inaudible though)

Great sub, almost as good as 1990 lanzar pro

Written By BatsonE, Aiken, SC on Friday, March 07, 2014

I wanted to share my experience since I used to be very heavy in the Crank it up scene in the 80's-90's. I used to run Lanzar Pro subs with 90-93 db efficiency. These are 86db. You have to double the watts to add 3 db so a more efficient sub takes less power to get the same db as cheaper subs. This is a good tight well controlled sub in an enclosed box of 1.2 ft2. I am running 1 with a late 80's ZED audio made Autotek 7050BTS. This is a high current 22w x 2 amp that puts out around 150w at 2 ohm ( how I have it ) and 250w at 1 ohm. In my 4 door with the box in the trunk I hit 120db at the drivers seat with 1 sub. A pro sub would be 90+ db efficient but for the money and the low cost of amps now this is a very well controlled sub for rock, classical. jazz, and somewhat for rap. Would be best if ported for Rap but Chicago and all the other 80's groups sound great with it.( I'm old ) Oh, I played Boom Boom Pow to get the spl. I got beat by 2 db by cars with dual subs and/or 500-1000 watt amps. Well worth the money for tight controlled sound. There may be better for pure loudness but my systems have always been about SQ and not all about loudness.
Pros:
Quality sound Tight base in sealed box
Cons:
wish was more efficient 86db not good enough

Great Sub!

Written By Anonymous, Anchorage, Alaska on Friday, January 24, 2014

I bought this sub to replace 2-10" subs I had before and it was well worth it! I have an Alpine MRP-M500 amp powering my 12" and it's perfect! I bought the 4 Ohm dual voice coil because I already had the amp an didn't want to buy a new one and I could just bridge the 12" from 4ohms to 2ohm which is perfect case now I can use all 500watts if I want and don't have to worry about overpowering the amp or sub.

Alpine Type S with an Audiopipe 1500

Written By Moyses, Indianapolis, IN on Monday, October 28, 2013

Recently bought an alpine type s and wow does it pound. I decided to put it in a sealed box since i never used one before and let me tell you it sound incredible. I bought an audiopipe 1500 since i was on a budget and it does the job. One big thing though, i have all the settings and gains set really low because i dont kknow if the sub would accept all the 1500 watts. Sounds really good either way.
Pros:
Looks very sleek with the black cone. Small and versatile. Version of older type r. Good for people on a budget.
Cons:
None so far.

decent sub

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Only using a 500 watt alpine amp turned up half way with the eq down and I smelled one of the voice coils but it still hits pretty good for a single 12, I would buy atleast a 700 rms amp and turn it down.
Pros:
Looks build quality
Cons:
Price, theres a lot better subs from the smaller guys that are every bit as good if not better for a lot less.

Alpine

Written By Justin, hudson, ohio on Saturday, July 28, 2012

bought one of these from my local car audio dealer. Powered by a powerbass 400.2 watt amp (with 800 watts peak power) and its inside a ported box. This sub does a really nice job and reallyyy bumps on songs with good bass. it rattles my change in my cup holder on some songs. If you got two these things would be devastating! but just one works too im pretty happy with it.

Amazing

Written By Jp84, Bairdford, PA on Monday, May 28, 2012

I have one type s in a ported box. It's powered by a Polk 880 mono block amp, and an alpine Ina-w900bt running everything. This sub is an incredible value 150 bucks for near type r performance. I am impressed and now an alpine fan for life.
Pros:
Inexpensive and great performance.
Cons:
I wish I would have bought two!

3 questions already asked

I have an Alpine pdx v9 amp and am wanting an sws12d2 or sws12d4 subwoofer as it appears it would be a good match for my amp setup. 500 rms. at this point i would like to know overall which would be my best bet. 2 or 4 ohm. Is there going to be a big difference output wise as to not pushing the amp as hard? It will be a single 12 in a sound ordinance bass bunker. .95 cu. ft. Please advise. Thanks for your time. I currently run an MTX Jackhammer Box with 2 12" subs running off a Kenwood 8105D at 2 ohms 500rms/1000peak. I was thinking of replacing the subs as I have gotten used to them. Would this be a decent replacement with the same amp and box? [ christian  Feb 08, 2014 ]

The owners manual says with one amp you connect it to the outside +and- and then install jumpers from the post to the other 2 remaining speaker connections. Why is that and do you have to do that? [ Gary  Dec 27, 2013 ]

  • hi I have a alpine mrp m500 want to know if sws 12d4 is ok for my amp? thanks [ hector   Feb 18, 2014 ]
  • It depends on what type of amp you have, you either wire it in series or parallel based on your ohm rating of your amp and subwoofer. There is a wiring diagram chart on crutchfield. [ STEPHEN   Dec 27, 2013 ]
