Our take on the Alpine CDE-SXM145BT

by Jon Paulette
Alpine

Why replace your factory radio?

Two good reasons - sound quality and cool features. A new car stereo offers power that's superior to most factory radios, along with more sophisticated tone controls. And most car stereos offer built-in or optional features that add safety and fun to life in your car, including inputs for your iPod or MP3 player, Bluetooth connectivity for hands-free cell phone calls, satellite radio or HD Radio reception, and connections for building an audio system in your car.

Alpine Authorized Online Dealer

Amazing Alpine sound, great SiriusXM programming

The CDE-SXM145BT CD receiver gives you the great sound you expect from Alpine, plus SiriusXM satellite radio's amazing variety of music, sports, news, and entertainment.

The SiriusXM programming (subscription required) comes through the SXV200 SiriusXM tuner that's included with this receiver. You'll also enjoy these convenient features:

  • iTunes® Tagging, which allows you to mark songs for purchase later at the iTunes store;
  • SiriusXM Replay™ for pause, rewind and replay of up to 60 minutes of live content;
  • Song Alert and Artist Alert, which constantly scans all channels for your favorites;
  • and Game Alert™ which lets you know when your favorite NFL, NBA, NHL or college teams is playing live.

The CDE-SXM145BT also includes Tune Scan and Tune Start, which let you rewind and replay content you might have missed while listening to another channel. Tune Scan lets you quickly preview what's playing on each of the 6 preset channels on your selected band preset. When you hear something you like, Tune Start buffers up to 30 minutes of programming, so you can back up and play your song from the beginning.

Built-in Bluetooth™

Hands-free calling isn't just a convenience these days, it's practically a necessity. The CDE-SXM145BT includes built-in Bluetooth, so you can talk safely and stream music from Pandora Internet Radio using your iPhone.

Great for your stored iPod® and iPhone® content, too

Of course, you can also use the receiver controls to navigate your iPod's music library — just plug in your device to the convenient front-panel USB input and get ready to rock out (or chill out, depending on your preference). Alpine's rotary encoder makes really easy to find your favorite songs, albums, artists, or playlists quickly. Your copilots will love Passenger Control Mode, which lets them play DJ while you focus on driving.

App Direct Mode opens up more music

If you have an iPhone®, you know that the music you've stored on it is only part of the story — streaming apps let you tune into a plethora of music and other programs. The CDE-SXM145BT features App Direct Mode, which gives you access to select music apps. App Direct Mode offers limited control over your apps, with features such as play/pause and next track.

Ready for expansion

A powerful internal amp gives you plenty of headroom to turn up the volume without the sound getting distorted and harsh. You can adjust the overall tone to taste with the 3-band parametric EQ, which allows you to choose the centerpoint for your bass, midrange, and treble controls.

Alpine CDE-SXM145BT CD receiver

This Alpine's user-friendly controls make it easy to operate on the road.

If you want to take the performance up another notch, you can plug Alpine's KTP-445A Power Pack directly into to the CDE-SXM145BT. This plug-and-play powerhouse kicks up the output to a robust 45 watts RMS per channel, but it requires almost no wiring and takes up very little space. If you want to bring on the bass, this Alpine also features two sets of RCA preamp outputs, perfect for adding a powered sub or an amp.

Want to keep your steering wheel controls?

In most vehicles, you can use an adapter (not included) to your vehicle's steering wheel controls to this Alpine stereo. Connect a few wires, then program the adapter for your particular car and the Alpine, and you'll retain the convenience of your steering wheel controls. Check the "Accessories" tab for compatible adapters.

Bluetooth note: Bluetooth compatibility of this device may vary, depending on your phone and service provider.

iPod note: If you're going to use your iPod with this receiver, be sure to check "Details" for specific iPod model compatibility with this receiver or its optional iPod adapter.

    • Random: Random Play (all tracks/files on disc are played in random order), Folder Random (only files in current folder are played back in random order).

Auto Reload: When a CD is ejected and left sticking out of the CD slot for 20 seconds, the unit automatically reloads the CD to protect if from damage.

Angle Mounting: For proper CD playback, Alpine recommends mounting the CDE-SXM145BT no more that 35° above horizontal.

    Audio Section

CEA-2006 Compliant: The specifications given by Alpine for the built-in amplifier comply with the CEA-2006 mobile amplifier power testing and measurement standards from the CEA (Consumer Electronics Association). All manufacturers who comply with the standard can display the CEA-2006 logo on their product.

    • CEA-2006 Power Rating: 18 watts x 4 channels (at 4 ohms, 20-20kHz, 1% THD)
    • Max Power Output: 50 watts x 4 channels

4ch/2V Preamp Outputs: The Alpine CDE-SXM145BT features two pair of 2.0-volt preamp outputs. The unit's rear preamp outputs can be configured as fading rear-channel outputs or a non-fading subwoofer outputs with a low-pass filter, phase adjustment, and output level control.

Note: When an external amplifier is connected sound quality can be improved by stopping the power supply of the built-in amplifier.

Head Unit Power Pack (optional): Add the KTP-445A (500KTP445A, sold separately) Head Unit Power Pack to deliver 45 watts x 4-channel RMS of power. The KTP-445A is compact enough to install behind the Alpine CD receiver. It plugs in-line with the head unit's wiring harness, so you don't even need additional wires.

Subwoofer Control: When the non-fading subwoofer preamp output is activated, you can adjust the subwoofer's volume, low-pass filter, & phase.

    • Volume: There are two volume (system) modes for the unit's subwoofer output.
      • System 1: Subwoofer level changes according to the main volume setting.
      • System 2: Subwoofer level change is different from the main volume setting (0-15); even at low volume settings, the subwoofer is still audible.
    • Low Pass Filter: The unit's subwoofer output low-pass filter can be set to 60Hz, 80Hz, 120Hz, 160Hz, or Off (through).
    • Subwoofer Phase: The subwoofer output phase can be set to Normal (0°) or Reverse (180°).

High Pass Filter: The Alpine head unit is equipped with a high-pass filter for its speaker-level output and front-channel preamp output (when activated). You can set the unit's high-pass filter to 60Hz, 80Hz, 120Hz, 160Hz, or Off (through).

Preset EQ: You can select from 11 different EQ presets to get the best sound from all your sources. You can choose from Flat, Pops, Rock, News, Jazz, Electric Dance, Hip-Hop, Easy Listening, Country, Classical, or User.

3-Band Parametric Equalizer: The User Preset activates the head unit's 3-Band Parametric Equalizer for a better sound response curve. Bass, Mid, & Treble can be adjusted in the 3-Band Parametric mode.

    3-Band EQ
    Frequency Q-Factor Level
    Bass 60Hz, 80Hz, 100Hz, or 120Hz Wide 0.5, Medium 1.0, Medium 1.5, or Narrow. 2.0 -7 to +7 (+/-14dB in 2dB steps)
    Midrange 500Hz, 1.0kHz, 1.5kHz, or 2.5kHz Wide 0.75, Medium 1.0, Medium 1.25, or Narrow 1.5 -7 to +7 (+/-14dB in 2dB steps)
    Treble 7.5kHz, 10kHz, 12.5kHz, or 15kHz Wide 0.75 or Narrow 1.25 -7 to +7 (+/-14dB in 2dB steps)
Note: The units stores independent EQ settings for each source (Disc, Tuner, Aux, USB, iPod, and Bluetooth).

Loudness: Loudness introduces a special low and high frequency emphasis at low listening levels to compensate for the ear's decreased sensitivity to bass and treble sound at low volume.

Media Xpander: Alpine's exclusive Media Xpander is engineered to bring out the musical details lost in compressed media, and it is adjustable per source to get the most out of your digital audio media. The Media Expander makes vocals or instruments sound distinct regardless of the music source. The FM radio, CD, USB, iPod/iPhone, Bluetooth, and Aux-input will be able to reproduce the music more clearly even in vehicles with a lot of road noise.

Source Volume Level: The output level of each source is individually adjustable from -14 to + 14 dB.

    Display Features

Detachable Face: The unit features a single front loading CD face that detaches from the chassis to deter theft. A hard plastic face case is provided to store the detachable faceplate. An optional soft face case (142DFC1X, sold separately) can also be purchased for this unit. A face-fixing screw is supplied for making the face non-detachable, if desired.

1-Line LCD Display: This unit is equipped with a 1-Line white-backlit LCD, so you can easily view AM/FM stations, CD-Text, and ID-3/WMA tag information.

Text Display: Text information, such as the disc name and the track name, will be displayed if playing a CD text compatible disc. It is also possible to display the folder name, the file name, and the tag information, while playing a MP3/WMA disc.

Text Scroll: This unit can scroll the disc and track names recorded on CD-Text disc, as well as the text information of MP3/WMA files, folder names, and tags. There are two Text Scroll settings.

    • Auto: The CD text information, the information of folder and file names, and the tags are scrolled automatically.
    • Manual: The display is scrolled when a disc is loaded or when a track is changed.

Auto Dimmer: This unit is equipped with an illumination lead (orange); when the unit's dimmer mode is set to Auto and the illumination lead is connected to your vehicle's headlight circuit, the display and button illumination will dim to a fixed, preset level whenever the headlights are turned on. If preferred, you may choose the Manual dimmer mode setting, so the display and button illumination is dim at all times.

Demo Mode: This unit has a demonstration feature for its display which can be turned On or Off in the menu.

    Remote Control

Steering Wheel Remote Compatibility: The head unit features an OEM steering wheel remote control input on the rear of the unit that lets you keep your vehicle's factory radio steering wheel remote controls when used with an optional steering wheel audio control adapter (sold separately). Please consult Crutchfield's Outfit My Car to see if your vehicle is compatible.

Optional Wireless Remote: The Alpine CDE-SXM145BT is wireless remote control ready. Simply add on the Alpine RUE-4202 IR remote (500RUE4202, sold separately) to make it even easier to control the head unit's functions.

Bought this for a road trip and loved it.
    Pros:
When I plugged my iPhone 5s into the usb port, it charged the phone and gave me turn by turn instructions through the speakers.
    Cons:
Must be listening to media from the iPhone to get turn by turn over the speakers and some times the phone is not recognized properly on first connect. However, worked fine if disconnected and reconnected.

    Nice Radio

The radio has nice sound but not much in the way of adjusting the bass, midrange and treble. I don't use the cell phone attachment. I do wish it had a 5 CD changer which this replaced but no one makes them now.
    Pros:
Nice set of features and has CD, and MP3 as well as Sirius.
    Cons:
Not the full sound like the radio it replaced. Sirius is nice but fades in and out.

This is overall and great in vehicle entertainment system. It has nearly every feature you want w/o the killer price tag.
    Pros:
Easy to install. Includes AM/FM w presets, CD, USB, USB iPhone/pad/etc, Bluetooth for both your phone and/or playing music from your phone (wirelessly), SirusXM (all HW and antenna, not an add on later but no subscription), and an Aux in. Documentation is good / OK.
    Cons:
Has everything but AM-Stereo and DVD (which this is I did not want in my vehicle for safety reasons).

    Great update to Jeep Liberty

Written By Mike, York,PA on Thursday, June 12, 2014
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I purchased this to replace my factory Infinity system with NAV since my speakers were shot and it no longer would read the map DVD. The Alpine sounds great with my new Kenwood speakers and looks good. its a much cleaner look than factory with a plug n play SAT radio I had. I love that the sat tuner was part of the package. install was not that hard except the jeeps wiring needed adapted but instructions were provided, once I had that and took my time it all was working good. Call quality so far with the hands free is good people seem to know they are on speaker phone but say they can hear me clearly unlike some devices I tried. BT audio play back is great with my Galaxy S3. it even begins playback where I stopped, even can changed tracks with my steering wheel controls. the tuner seems real good, it picks up lots of stations even with only my 13" off road style antenna. Again SAT radio controls built in is just awesome to me. Satellite sound quality is good as well. I have not used the CD player much or usb function but I'm sure those features work well too.
    Pros:
Satellite tuner included good hands free call quality decent on board power, but some that want more bass should get an amp and sub, I am ok with it as is. Plenty of other features for the price steering wheel control ready 2 sets of pre-amp outputs to expand your system
    Cons:
not color a changeable display display areas requires you to choose only one thing to display when in SAT mode (channel name, artist, song title) artist and title would be nice, but display is very readable. I would have preferred a double din head unit to this but one would not easily fit in the vehicle so this is an OK compromise.

    Mostly Great

Written By Sam, Dayton, OH on Wednesday, April 09, 2014
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I replaced an older Alpine that came with the car originally. I now have much improved sound, plus the SiriusXM radio function which I wanted. The CD player works nicely also. It is a bit tedious to use. I looked around a lot, and this was the only radio I found that did the things I want.
    Pros:
Great reception, getting all kinds of stations that I did not get before. Many functions. Good sound, and easily adjusted. Display is very readable. Overall the product looks very good
    Cons:
Understanding how to set the various functions is not obvious. I spent a lot of time with the manual trying to figure it out, but eventually got all working. I do not like that they do not provide a manual, but make you print out one from the CD provided if you want it. Going through the various functions (Tuner, CD, etc.) is in one direction only, and cannot reverse. Thus takes a while to find what you want sometimes.

I'm a big fan of Alpine but this unit might change that opinion. I don't know if Ive received a bad unit or not but so far i have nothing good to say about it. The cd skips over bumps, I get nothing but complaints because of the sound quality when I use the BT feature which my phone, the XM signal constantly cuts out (my previous unit did have any problems), and at times Ill get a "Check Tuner" message on the display and it becomes totally useless. Looks like I'm a minority when it comes to liking this product but I hope you have better luck then I did. So sorry I bought it.
    Pros:
    Ease of installation
    Cons:
XM signal cuts out cd skips call quality with the handsfree is horrible

This radio is the "bomb" sounds great, looks great, easy to use, has everything function you want in your car! Between the standard radio, Sirius radio, auxiliary functions and Bluetooth, what more could you ask for?
    Pros:
With the Crutchfield installation kit, it was seriously a "breeze" to install. Two hours from start to enjoying my new sound!
    Cons:
As a normal man I hate instruction manuals! You really need to study it to use all of the functions to their best advantage.

Great unit, with a minor quibble

Written By JimG, Arizona on Thursday, February 20, 2014
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I bought this to replace a Toyota factory head unit. The sound quality is excellent, I have much cleaner, louder sound just using the factory amplifier and speakers. It has a great variety of inputs, and linking the Bluetooth with my phone is simple. I like that once it's been linked, all I have to do is get in my truck and it's linked and ready to go. There are plenty of options for tweeking the sound, but the built in EQ settings are fine for 95% of what I listen to. My only quibble with the unit is that when I'm listening to satellite radio, the unit doesn't scroll the song title and artist, but that is really a minor thing.
    Pros:
Great sound, easy installation, plenty of inputs, Bluetooth integration is seamless.
    Cons:
No scrolling display on satellite radio.

This a awesome deck !! It does everything I could want except get Sirius radio.

I switched my satellite service from old Sirius receiver to the 145BT and Imagine my surprise when it was only then that I learned it was XM only !!! It is my fault I know for not double checking to make sure that it was Sirius and not XM . Other than that I love this thing !!! this my 6th Alpine and like every other one this thing is GREAT!!!
    Pros:
It does it all so well !!
    Cons:
    XM only . I am a Sirius guy .

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Old factory radio was an AM/FM cd player with a failing CD player. I needed an upgrade and wanted blue tooth to talk on the phone when I drive, hands free required in Nevada by law. The Alpine was a perfect match to my needs, all the features, good price, enough power to replace the factory radio. The master sheet and adaptors were free, fits perfect, worked really well, the only thing I had to look at the instructions for was where to plug in the mic. and how to set the clock. Great piece of hardware at a very fair price.
    Pros:
looks good, with free crutchfield adaptors the install takes very little time sounds great!
    Cons:
buttons are a little small for my big fingers

I am thrilled with my new SiriusXM/FM/USB/Bluetooth/multi-input car radio! Before, I had a Sirius radio for years with the wires running all through the car and the wire going out the window to the antenna. This radio will access more music and information than I have even figured out so far. It was my birthday gift and the best one I ever received! The Crutchfield connection is wonderful. They have a network of installers and a web setup that makes it all so easy. I would definitely use Crutchfield for anything to do with car audio in the future. They are so helpful and cooperative!
    Pros:
Removable - includes a case to keep the "face" in ; so many aspects to it that it can do 'most anything. I love Sirius and there's an antenna, of course, but it's wireless as is the microphone. It took about 2 hours to install it - very reasonable.

This radio has exceeded my expectations. Used an Install Card to have it professionally installed in a 2009 Honda CRV and the improved sound quality with the factory speakers is incredible. Navigating the menus and accessing some of the settings takes some getting used to.

    Alpine w/mustang

Written By Anonymous, San Antonio, TX on Saturday, June 22, 2013
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This radio on the surface is wonderful and beautiful. It looks great in my 05 mustang. It looks a lot better than other aftermarket radios. Make sure you know how many watts your radio speakers produce. This alpine radio puts out only a few watts, 18 I THINK. That was lower than my FACTORY speakers. The sound sounded close to terrible. The highs and lows sounded excellent but the bass was almost absent in Bluetooth, fm/am, Sirius, and pandora audio. The sound sounded better in disc audio. The factory radio sounded better, no question. I love that this radio comes with Sirius and Bluetooth. The Bluetooth feature is great. I don't have to connect and disconnect my phone every time I get in the car. It is convenient. Overall, this is a beautiful looking radio with great features, but if you wanted better sound than your factory radio like I did, make sure you check the wattage. You don't want to get a lower wattage, it will sound light and not good at all.
    Pros:
Sirius xm radio, Bluetooth, looks sexy
    Cons:
Low wattage sound, small display space

Bought this as a replacement for the factory radio in a 2003 Excursion. The installation instructions could have been more coherent, but even as a first-timer, I made it through in about two hours total. The fit is great and the sound is phenomenal. It's obviously not a terribly high-end item, but for what you pay, it is a great value. I love Sirius/XM and being able to use my Samsung Galaxy S2 through bluetooth.

    Great display and sound

Its really nice to be able to order one part number and have everything I wanted in a stereo. The Bluetooth function works great, especially using the Bluetooth audio function to play Pandora or slacker radio from my phone without extra cables hanging out of the deck. The satellite radio was extremely easy to setup and start listening. Very nice overall.
